Abstract: Abstract The SHiP-charm project was proposed to measure the associated charm production induced by 400 GeV/c protons in a thick target, including the contribution from cascade production. An optimisation run was performed in July 2018 at CERN SPS using a hybrid setup. The high resolution of nuclear emulsions acting as vertex detector was complemented by electronic detectors for kinematic measurements and muon identification. Here we present first results on the analysis of nuclear emulsions exposed in the 2018 run, which prove the capability of reconstructing proton interaction vertices in a harsh environment, where the signal is largely dominated by secondary particles produced in hadronic and electromagnetic showers within the lead target.

Abstract: Abstract We report results from a study of B ± → DK ± decays followed by D decaying to the CP-even final state K + K − and CP-odd final state K S 0 π 0 $$ {K}_S^0{\pi}^0 $$ , where D is an admixture of D 0 and D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ states. These decays are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity-triangle angle ϕ 3. The results are based on a combined analysis of the final data set of 772 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and a data set of 198 × 106 B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment, both in electron-positron collisions at the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure the CP asymmetries to be A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ = (+12.5 ± 5.8 ± 1.4)% and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− = (−16.7 ± 5.7 ± 0.6)%, and the ratios of branching fractions to be R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP+ = 1.164 ± 0.081 ± 0.036 and R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ CP− = 1.151 ± 0.074 ± 0.019. The first contribution to the uncertainties is statistical, and the second is systematic. The asymmetries A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP+ and A $$ \mathcal{A} $$ CP− have similar magnitudes and opposite signs; their difference corresponds to 3.5 standard deviations. From these values we calculate 68.3% confidence intervals of (8.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 16.5 ° ) or (84.5 ° < ϕ 3 < 95.5 ° ) or (163.3 ° < ϕ 3 < 171.5 ° ) and 0.321 < r B < 0.465.

Abstract: Abstract JSNS $$^2$$ 2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment that searches for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $$\bar{\nu }_{\mu } \rightarrow \bar{\nu }_{e}$$ ν ¯ μ → ν ¯ e appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. The JSNS $$^2$$ 2 experiment performed data taking from 2021. In this manuscript, a study of the accidental background is presented. The rate of the accidental background is ( $$9.29\pm 0.39) \times 10^{-8}$$ 9.29 ± 0.39 ) × 10 - 8 /spill with 0.75 MW beam power and comparable to the expected number of signal events.

4. Countermeasures against flood damage of buildings and their applicability

Abstract: In Japan, devising ways to live in areas with a possibility of flooding, to regulate and guide buildings and land use should be considered to respond to future climate change. This article investigates the cost-effectiveness of flood damage countermeasures at the building and site level based on the flood risk of the location. In the research, 3 cases were assumed; (1) when constructing a new wooden detached house, (2) when renovating an existing condominium, and (3) when a business office moves into the first floor of a RC building and a model examination of flood countermeasures was carried out and demonstrated. By calculation and comparison of “average expected payback period”, it was found reasonable to first prepare for flooding at a minimum of 30 to 50 cm above ground level, and then to consider countermeasures in stages for greater flooding depths.

Abstract: Abstract We report the first measurement of the inclusive e + e − → b b ¯ $$ b\overline{b} $$ → D s ± $$ {D}_s^{\pm } $$ X and e + e − → b b ¯ $$ b\overline{b} $$ → D 0 / D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ X cross sections in the energy range from 10.63 to 11.02 GeV. Based on these results, we determine σ(e + e − → B s 0 B ¯ s 0 $$ {B}_s^0{\overline{B}}_s^0 $$ X) and σ(e + e − → B B ¯ $$ B\overline{B} $$ X) in the same energy range. We measure the fraction of B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ events at Υ(10860) to be f s = ( 22.0 − 2.1 + 2.0 $$ {22.0}_{-2.1}^{+2.0} $$ )%. We determine also the ratio of the B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ inclusive branching fractions B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ ( B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ → D 0 / D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ X)/ B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ ( B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ → D s ± $$ {D}_s^{\pm } $$ X) = 0.416 ± 0.018 ± 0.092. The results are obtained using the data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider.

Abstract: We report here on a system developed to automatically measure the flow rate characteristics (i.e., the pump efficiency) of pumps on ozonesondes under various pressure levels simulating upper-air conditions. The system consists of a flow measurement unit incorporating a polyethylene airbag, a pressure control unit that reproduces low-pressure environmental conditions, and a control unit that integrates and controls these elements to enable fully automatic measurement. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has operationally measured pump efficiency for electrochemical concentration cell (ECC) ozonesondes using the system since 2009, resulting in a significant amount of related data. Extensive measurements collected for the same ozonesonde pump over a period of around 12 years indicate the long-term stability of the system's performance. These long-term data also show that ozonesonde pump flow characteristics differed among production lots. Evaluation of the impacts of variance in these characteristics on observed ozone concentration data indicated that the influence on total ozone estimation was up to approximately 4 %, the standard deviation per lot was approximately 1 %, and the standard deviation among lots was approximately 0.6 %.

Abstract: Disruption database in the JT-60SA first plasma operation period has been constructed. The disruptions have been divided into three categories based on their characteristics, and the characteristics of each category have been discussed. The most commonly observed disruptions were vertical displacement events (VDEs). As expected by simulations using the MHD equilibrium control simulator (MECS), a highly elongated plasma was likely to disrupt by VDE when the gap between the plasma surface and the wall is large. Despite the quite high edge safety factor $q_\mathrm{95}$ of above 10 in the initial operation, some discharge disrupted because of control failure caused by the n = 1 tearing mode. One possible cause of the n = 1 tearing mode is the edge cooling in high density. The last category is the radiative disruptions, which is characterized by slow current decay with multiple spikes in soft x-ray signals. These spikes are thought to be related to the MHD activity that occurred when the cooling front crossed the rational surface. The radiative disruptions are attributed to a sudden change in edge power balance.

Abstract: The mission of WEST (tungsten-W Environment in Steady-state Tokamak) is to explore long pulse operation in a full tungsten (W) environment for preparing next-step fusion devices (ITER and DEMO) with a focus on testing the ITER actively cooled W divertor in tokamak conditions. Following the successful completion of phase 1 (2016-2021), phase 2 started in December 2022 with the lower divertor made entirely of actively cooled ITER-grade tungsten mono-blocks. A boronization prior the first plasma attempt allowed for a smooth startup with the new divertor. Despite the reduced operating window due to tungsten, rapid progress has been made in long pulse operation, resulting in discharges with a pulse length of 100 s and an injected energy of around 300 MJ per discharge. Plasma startup studies were carried out with equatorial boron nitride limiters to compare them with tungsten limiters, while Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating assisted startup was attempted. High fluence operation in attached regime, which was the main thrust of the first campaigns, already showed the progressive build up of deposits and appearance of dust, impacting the plasma operation as the plasma fluence increased. In total, the cumulated injected energy during the first campaigns reached 43 GJ and the cumulated plasma time exceeded 5 h. Demonstration of controlled X-Point Radiator regime is also reported, opening a promising route for investigating plasma exhaust and plasma-wall interaction issues in more detached regime. This paper summarises the lessons learned from the manufacturing and the first operation of the ITER-grade divertor, describing the progress achieved in optimising operation in a full W environment with a focus on long pulse operation and plasma wall interaction.

Abstract: The Korean Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research has been focused on exploring the key physics and engineering issues for future fusion reactors by demonstrating the long pulse operation of high beta steady-state discharge. Advanced scenarios are being developed with the goal for steady-state operation, and significant progress has been made in high ℓ _i , hybrid and high beta scenarios with β _N of 3. In the new operation scenario called fast ion regulated enhanced (FIRE), fast ions play an essential role in confinement enhancement. GK simulations show a significant reduction of the thermal energy flux when the thermal ion fraction decreases and the main ion density gradient is reversed by the fast ions in FIRE mode. Optimization of 3D magnetic field techniques, including adaptive control and real-time machine learning control algorithm, enabled long-pulse operation and high-performance ELM-suppressed discharge. Symmetric multiple shattered pellet injections (SPIs) and real-time disruption event characterization and forecasting are being performed to mitigate and avoid the disruptions associated with high-performance, long-pulse ITER-like scenarios. Finally, the near-term research plan will be addressed with the actively cooled tungsten divertor, a major upgrade of the NBI and helicon current drive heating, and transition to a full metallic wall.

Abstract: Superconducting (SC) tokamak JT-60SA plays an essential role in fusion research and development by supporting and complementing the ITER project, providing directions to the DEMO design activity and fostering next generation scientists and engineers. Since the short circuit incident at the terminal joints of equilibrium field coil #1 during the integrated commissioning (IC) in March 2021, both EU and JA implementing agencies (IAs) have examined how to ensure safe operation of JT-60SA by mitigating the risk of possible discharge occurrence inside the cryostat. Based on the experience of the global Paschen tests, the IAs have established a strategy of risk mitigation measures, which is a combination of (i) reinforcement of insulation, (ii) avoiding unnecessary voltage application to the coil systems and (iii) immediate de-energization of the coils when deteriorated vacuum conditions are detected. Thanks to the considerable efforts of the Integrated Project Team members, the IC restarted in May 2023. After confirmation of the SC state of the coil systems (TF, EF and CS), the coil energization test and the plasma operation phase 1 (OP-1) started. The first plasma was successfully achieved on 23 October 2023 with a limited value of voltage and current applied to the coils. The plasma configuration control was also confirmed with low plasma current and low auxiliary heating power conditions. Based on the IO–F4E–QST collaboration, activities of JT-60SA have been shared with the IO and provided an important lesson for ITER assembly and commissioning, and will provide an outstanding contribution to fusion research at large. After OP-1, maintenance & enhancement phase 1 (M/E-1) starts from January 2024, in which in-vessel components are installed, and heating and diagnostic systems are extensively upgraded to allow a high power heating experiment planned in OP-2. In order to make the best use of JT-60SA, a newly organized JT-60SA experiment team will refine the research plan for the future high heating power operation phase.

Abstract: The world’s largest superconducting tokamak, JT-60SA, has successfully achieved its first plasma operation under the constraint of a low toroidal inductive electric field of 0.15 V m ^−1 . A plasma start-up scenario, leveraging the effective confinement of electrons accelerated by the electron cyclotron wave, proved to be instrumental in reaching this milestone under the challenging conditions. The demonstration of plasma start-up using second harmonic electron cyclotron heating, with an applied toroidal electric field of 0.15 V m ^−1 , strongly validates the feasibility of achieving first plasma operation in ITER.

Abstract: Abstract The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has proposed a general-purpose experimental facility operating in beam-dump mode at the CERN SPS accelerator to search for light, feebly interacting particles. In the baseline configuration, the SHiP experiment incorporates two complementary detectors. The upstream detector is designed for recoil signatures of light dark matter (LDM) scattering and for neutrino physics, in particular with tau neutrinos. It consists of a spectrometer magnet housing a layered detector system with high-density LDM/neutrino target plates, emulsion-film technology and electronic high-precision tracking. The total detector target mass amounts to about eight tonnes. The downstream detector system aims at measuring visible decays of feebly interacting particles to both fully reconstructed final states and to partially reconstructed final states with neutrinos, in a nearly background-free environment. The detector consists of a 50 $$\mathrm { \,m}$$ m long decay volume under vacuum followed by a spectrometer and particle identification system with a rectangular acceptance of 5 m in width and 10 m in height. Using the high-intensity beam of 400 $$\,\mathrm {GeV}$$ GeV protons, the experiment aims at profiting from the $$4\times 10^{19}$$ 4 × 10 19 protons per year that are currently unexploited at the SPS, over a period of 5–10 years. This allows probing dark photons, dark scalars and pseudo-scalars, and heavy neutral leptons with GeV-scale masses in the direct searches at sensitivities that largely exceed those of existing and projected experiments. The sensitivity to light dark matter through scattering reaches well below the dark matter relic density limits in the range from a few $${\mathrm {\,MeV\!/}c^2}$$ MeV / c 2 up to 100 MeV-scale masses, and it will be possible to study tau neutrino interactions with unprecedented statistics. This paper describes the SHiP experiment baseline setup and the detector systems, together with performance results from prototypes in test beams, as it was prepared for the 2020 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics. The expected detector performance from simulation is summarised at the end.

Abstract: Abstract JSNS $$^2$$ 2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment that is searching for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $${\bar{\nu }}_{\mu } \rightarrow {\bar{\nu }}_{e}$$ ν ¯ μ → ν ¯ e appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. Before dedicated data taking in the first-half of 2021, we performed a commissioning run for 10 days in June 2020. Using the data obtained in this commissioning run, in this paper, we present an estimate of the correlated background which imitates the $${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$$ ν ¯ e signal in a sterile neutrino search. In addition, in order to demonstrate future prospects of the JSNS $$^2$$ 2 experiment, possible pulse shape discrimination improvements towards reducing cosmic ray induced fast neutron background are described.

16. A muographic study of a scoria cone from 11 directions using nuclear emulsion cloud chambers

Abstract: One of the key challenges for muographic studies is to reveal the detailed 3D density structure of a volcano by increasing the number of observation directions. 3D density imaging by multi-directional muography requires that the individual differences in the performance of the installed muon detectors are small and that the results from each detector can be derived without any bias in the data analysis. Here we describe a pilot muographic study of the Izu–Omuroyama scoria cone in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, from 11 directions, using a new nuclear emulsion detector design optimized for quick installation in the field. We describe the details of the data analysis and present a validation of the results. The Izu–Omuroyama scoria cone is an ideal target for the first multi-directional muographic study, given its expected internal density structure and the topography around the cone. We optimized the design of the nuclear emulsion detector for rapid installation at multiple observation sites in the field, and installed these at 11 sites around the volcano. The images in the developed emulsion films were digitized into segmented tracks with a high-speed automated readout system. The muon tracks in each emulsion detector were then reconstructed. After the track selection, including straightness filtering, the detection efficiency of the muons was estimated. Finally, the density distributions in 2D angular space were derived for each observation site by using a muon flux and attenuation models. The observed muon flux was compared with the expected value in the free sky, and is 88 % ± 4 % in the forward direction and 92 % ± 2 % in the backward direction. The density values were validated by comparison with the values obtained from gravity measurements, and are broadly consistent, except for one site. The excess density at this one site may indicate that the density inside the cone is non-axisymmetric, which is consistent with a previous geological study.

Abstract: Abstract We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle angle ϕ 3 (also known as γ) using a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of B + → D ( K S 0 $$ {K}_S^0 $$ h + h − )h +, where D is either a D 0 or D ¯ $$ \overline{D} $$ 0 meson and h is either a π or K. This is the first measurement that simultaneously uses Belle and Belle II data, combining samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 711 fb −1 and 128 fb −1, respectively. All data were accumulated from energy-asymmetric e + e − collisions at a centre-of-mass energy corresponding to the mass of the Υ(4S) resonance. We measure ϕ 3 = (78.4 ± 11.4 ± 0.5 ± 1.0)°, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is from the uncertainties on external measurements of the D-decay strong-phase parameters.

18. Tunnel anisotropic magnetoresistance in magnetic tunnel junctions using FeAlSi

Abstract: We fabricated magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with FeAlSi free layers and investigated the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) properties at low temperature. We observed TMR ratio increase with temperature decrease, and confirmed the TMR ratio of 179.9% at 10 K. The conductance dependence on bias voltage was measured, and a clear peak at low bias voltage similar to Fe/MgO/Fe MTJs was observed. This behavior can be explained by considering the majority band of Fe(001), and Δ5 electrons tunneling in FeAlSi/MgO/CoFeB MTJs at low bias voltage. We also investigated tunnel anisotropic magneto-resistance (TAMR) and clearly observed a TAMR peak similar to Fe/MgO/Fe MTJs, where the TAMR ratio of FeAlSi/MgO/CoFeB MTJs was 1.0% comparable to 1.1% in Fe/MgO/Fe MTJs. We concluded that electron tunneling was caused by the interfacial resonance states originating from spin orbit coupling in the FeAlSi/MgO/CoFeB MTJs.

Abstract: Abstract UVB-irradiation increases the risk of various skin disorders, therefore leading to inflammation and oxidative stress. In this sense, antioxidant-rich herbs such as Rosmarinus officinalis may be useful in minimizing the damage promoted by reactive oxygen species. In this work, we report the efficacy of a R. officinalis hydroethanolic extract (ROe)-loaded emulgel in preventing UVB-related skin damage. Total phenols were determined using Folin-Ciocalteu assay, and the main phytocomponents in the extract were identified by UHPLC-HRMS. Moreover, in vitro sun protection factor (SPF) value of ROe was also assessed, and we investigated the in vivo protective effect of an emulgel containing ROe against UVB-induced damage in an animal model. The ROe exhibited commercially viable SPF activity (7.56 ± 0.16) and remarkable polyphenolic content (24.15 ± 0.11 mg (Eq.GA)/g). HPLC-MS and UHPLC-HRMS results showcased that the main compounds in ROe were: rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid and carnosol. The evaluation of the in vitro antioxidant activity demonstrated a dose-dependent effect of ROe against several radicals and the capacity to reduce iron. Therefore, we demonstrated that topical application of the formulation containing ROe inhibited edema formation, myeloperoxidase activity, GSH depletion and maintained ferric reducing (FRAP) and ABTS scavenging abilities of the skin after UVB exposure.

Abstract: Dependence of EC injection power (0.6 and 1.4 MW), EC injection width (0.1–1.0 s) and prefilled He pressure (2.8×10−5∼2.2×10−3 mbar) on D2 outgas efficiency is investigated at a toroidal field of 2.4 T in a poloidal trapped particle configuration with an EC wave frequency of 140 GHz (X-mode) and a second harmonic resonance layer near the machine center (1.73 m). With increasing EC injection power, D2 outgas increases clearly. The dependence of the EC power injection is the most pronounced between the scanned parameters. It is found that an optimum prefilled He pressure for D2 outgas exists under the condition of a constant EC injection power. It is observed that both high EC injection power and the optimum prefilled He pressure enhance the ion flux to the center stack, suggesting that the D2 outgas originates from the center stack.

Abstract: Abstract Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m $$_{\gamma ^{\mathrm {D}}}$$ γ D and its mixing parameter with the photon, $$\varepsilon $$ ε . The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m $$_{\gamma ^{\mathrm {D}}}$$ γ D ranging between 0.8 and 3.3 $$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$$ - 0.5 + 0.2 GeV, and $$\varepsilon ^2$$ ε 2 ranging between $$10^{-11}$$ 10 - 11 and $$10^{-17}$$ 10 - 17 .

Abstract: Abstract Dark matter is a well-established theoretical addition to the Standard Model supported by many observations in modern astrophysics and cosmology. In this context, the existence of weakly interacting massive particles represents an appealing solution to the observed thermal relic in the Universe. Indeed, a large experimental campaign is ongoing for the detection of such particles in the sub-GeV mass range. Adopting the benchmark scenario for light dark matter particles produced in the decay of a dark photon, with α D = 0.1 and m A′ = 3m χ , we study the potential of the SHiP experiment to detect such elusive particles through its Scattering and Neutrino detector (SND). In its 5-years run, corresponding to 2 · 1020 protons on target from the CERN SPS, we find that SHiP will improve the current limits in the mass range for the dark matter from about 1 MeV to 300 MeV. In particular, we show that SHiP will probe the thermal target for Majorana candidates in most of this mass window and even reach the Pseudo-Dirac thermal relic.

24. A new method to correct the electrochemical concentration cell (ECC) ozonesonde time response and its implications for 'background current' and pump efficiency

Abstract: The electrochemical concentration cell (ECC) ozonesonde has been the main instrument for in situ profiling of ozone worldwide; yet, some details of its operation, which contribute to the ozone uncertainty budget, are not well understood. Here, we investigate the time response of the chemical reactions inside the ECC and how corrections can be used to remove some systematic biases. The analysis is based on the understanding that two reaction pathways involving ozone occur inside the ECC that generate electrical currents on two very different timescales. The main fast-reaction pathway with a time constant of about 20 s is due the conversion of iodide to molecular iodine and the generation of two free electrons per ozone molecule. A secondary slow-reaction pathway involving the buffer generates an excess current of about 2 %–10 % with a time constant of about 25 min. This excess current can be interpreted as what has conventionally been considered the “background current”. This contribution can be calculated and removed from the measured current instead of the background current. Here we provide an algorithm to calculate and remove the contribution of the slow-reaction pathway and to correct for the time lag of the fast-reaction pathway. This processing algorithm has been applied to ozonesonde profiles at Costa Rica and during the Central Equatorial Pacific Experiment (CEPEX) as well as to laboratory experiments evaluating the performance of ECC ozonesondes. At Costa Rica, where a 1 % KI, 1/10th buffer solution is used, there is no change in the derived total ozone column; however, in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, average reported ozone concentrations increase by up to 7 % and above 30 km decrease by up to 7 %. During CEPEX, where a 1 % KI, full-buffer solution was used, ozone concentrations are increased mostly in the upper troposphere, with no change near the top of the profile. In the laboratory measurements, the processing algorithms have been applied to measurements using the majority of current sensing solutions and using only the stronger pump efficiency correction reported by Johnson et al. (2002). This improves the accuracy of the ECC sonde ozone profiles, especially for low ozone concentrations or large ozone gradients and removes systematic biases relative to the reference instruments. In the surface layer, operational procedures prior to launch, in particular the use of filters, influence how typical gradients above the surface are detected. The correction algorithm may report gradients that are steeper than originally reported, but their uncertainty is strongly influenced by the prelaunch procedures.

25. WATER AREA OBSERVATION EXPERIMENT USING OPTICAL SENSOR FOR EXTRACTING INUNDATION BOUNDARY AT NIGHT

Abstract: During the occurrence of floods, the government generally tries to determine the extent of the continuously changing inundation (water) area as a disaster response for planning evacuations and designing drainage systems. One of the most common methods to identify this area during the daytime involves the interpretation of aerial optical images and videos that are obtained using an airplane, helicopter, or satellite. However, these aerial approach methods have not been established convincingly for their use during the night time. Therefore, to identify the water area at night, two hand-held optical sensors were used in this study, namely: an ultrasensitive camera (Sony SL camera α7S), and a thermal infrared camera (Optris thermography PI640). The night-time aerial performance was evaluated using a helicopter, along with a supplementary night-time examination on the ground. Herein, we targeted river water areas during normal conditions. As a result, it was determined that the water area could be identified clearly with an ultrasensitive camera that has an ISO sensitivity between 51200 and 102400. The thermal infrared camera was able to identify the water area to have a higher temperature than that of the surrounding area. However, in some cases, the water area boundaries were not clear. Thus, as the thermal infrared camera was susceptible to varying conditions, supplemental use of an ultrasensitive camera was determined to be effective for the identification of inundation (water) areas at night. The significance of this study is established by the fact that the studied sensors can be easily transported in a helicopter or mounted on a UAV for night-time applications.

Abstract: Abstract An event topology with two secondary vertices compatible with the decay of short-lived particles was found in the analysis of neutrino interactions in the OPERA target. The observed topology is compatible with tau neutrino charged current (CC) interactions with charm production and neutrino neutral current (NC) interactions with $$c\overline{c}$$ cc¯ pair production. However, other processes can mimic this topology. A dedicated analysis was implemented to identify the underlying process. A Monte Carlo simulation was developed and complementary procedures were introduced in the kinematic reconstruction. A multivariate analysis technique was used to achieve an optimal separation of signal from background. Most likely, this event is a $$\nu _{\tau }$$ ντ CC interaction with charm production, the tau and charm particle decaying into 1 prong and 2 prongs, respectively. The significance of this observation is evaluated.

Abstract: Abstract The SHiP experiment is proposed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/c proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. About $$10^{11}$$ 1011 muons per spill will be produced in the dump. To design the experiment such that the muon-induced background is minimized, a precise knowledge of the muon spectrum is required. To validate the muon flux generated by our Pythia and GEANT4 based Monte Carlo simulation (FairShip), we have measured the muon flux emanating from a SHiP-like target at the SPS. This target, consisting of 13 interaction lengths of slabs of molybdenum and tungsten, followed by a 2.4 m iron hadron absorber was placed in the H4 400 GeV/c proton beam line. To identify muons and to measure the momentum spectrum, a spectrometer instrumented with drift tubes and a muon tagger were used. During a 3-week period a dataset for analysis corresponding to $$(3.27\pm 0.07)~\times ~10^{11}$$ (3.27±0.07)×1011 protons on target was recorded. This amounts to approximatively 1% of a SHiP spill.

Abstract: The measurements of the difference between the thermodynamic temperature T and the temperature T90 based on the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90), (T-T90), by using an acoustic gas thermometer (AGT) working on neon gas is reported in this paper. The AGT introduced a one-liter quasi-spherical resonator made of oxygen-free-copper. The thermodynamic temperature was determined relatively from the speed of sound measurements at a desired temperature regarding to those at the triple point of water. At the present stage, the aimed temperature range was the gallium melting point. Based on the obtained measured speed of sound, the thermodynamic temperature T and the values of (T-T90) were determined, and the associated uncertainties were estimated. The (T-T90) obtained in the present work was found to agree within the estimated uncertainty with the currently reported values that exist in temperature range overlapping with the present work.

Abstract: Abstract We present the first model-independent measurement of the CKM unitarity triangle angle ϕ 3 using B ± → D( K S 0 $$ {K}_{\mathrm{S}}^0 $$ π + π − π 0) K ± decays, where D indicates either a D 0 or D ¯ $$ \overline{D} $$ 0 meson. Measurements of the strong-phase difference of the D → K S 0 $$ {K}_{\mathrm{S}}^0 $$ π + π − π 0 amplitude obtained from CLEO-c data are used as input. This analysis is based on the full Belle data set of 772 × 106 B B ¯ $$ \overline{B} $$ events collected at the Υ(4S) resonance. We obtain ϕ 3 = ( 5.7 − 8.8 + 10.2 $$ {5.7}_{-8.8}^{+10.2} $$ ±3.5±5.7) ° and the suppressed amplitude ratio r B = 0.323±0.147±0.023±0.051. Here the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic, and the third is due to the precision of the strong-phase parameters measured from CLEO-c data. The 95% confidence interval on ϕ 3 is (−29.7, 109.5) ° , which is consistent with the current world average.

Abstract: Abstract We report a new measurement of the e + e − → ϒ(nS)π + π − (n = 1, 2, 3) cross sections at energies from 10.52 to 11.02 GeV using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. We observe a new structure in the energy dependence of the cross sections; if described by a Breit-Wigner function its mass and width are found to be M = 10752.7 ± 5.9 − 1.1 + 0.7 MeV / c 2 $$ M=\left(10752.7\pm {5.9}_{-1.1}^{+0.7}\right)\mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2 $$ and Γ = 35.5 − 11.3 − 3.3 + 17.6 + 3.9 $$ \Gamma =\left({35.5}_{-11.3\kern0.5em -3.3}^{+17.6+3.9}\right) $$ MeV, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The global significance of the new structure including systematic uncertainty is 5.2 standard deviations. We also find evidence for the e + e − → ϒ (1S)π + π − process at the energy 10.52 GeV, which is below the B B ¯ $$ \overline{B} $$ threshold.

Abstract: Abstract Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs) are hypothetical particles predicted by many extensions of the Standard Model. These particles can, among other things, explain the origin of neutrino masses, generate the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe and provide a dark matter candidate. The SHiP experiment will be able to search for HNLs produced in decays of heavy mesons and travelling distances ranging between O $$ \mathcal{O} $$ (50 m) and tens of kilometers before decaying. We present the sensitivity of the SHiP experiment to a number of HNL’s benchmark models and provide a way to calculate the SHiP’s sensitivity to HNLs for arbitrary patterns of flavour mixings. The corresponding tools and data files are also made publicly available.

32. Spatial distribution of Ne ions in detached divertor plasmas of JT-60U

Abstract: Ne ion visible spectrum, which is consistent with spectra in VUV ranges, is calculated and synthesised for comparison with experimental spectrum. No spectral lines from highly charged Ne ions are identified but Ne III (Ne2+) ion is the highest charge which yields spectral lines in the visible range with sufficiently high intensity to be observed. Two-dimensional visible spectroscopic measurement of Ne III 4f-5g line and C IV 3s-3p line with an aid of computer tomography technique provides reconstructed emissivity distributions. Comparison of the emissivity distributions reveals that Ne III emissivity is peaked at the high field side of the X-point and C IV is distributed along the outer divertor leg in the case of inner divertor detachment, showing that Ne III contributes more to radiation around the X-point. In contrast, in the case of attachment, Ne III emissivity is peaked at the high field side of the X-point similarly in the detached case but with lower intensity while C IV emissivity is peaked at the X-point, contributing to the X-point radiation. Abstract: The transition of a detached to attached plasma experiment has been performed in GAMMA 10/PDX by applying an additional plasma heating pulse of electron cyclotron heating (ECH). In a plasma detachment experiment, a short pulse (25 ms) of ECH was applied at the east plug-cell to examine the effects of electron heating on the plasma parameters in the D-module. It was found that the ion flux increased significantly during ECH injection. In the ECH injection period, the ion flux increased with the increasing impurity injection, which indicates the impurity ion components are enhanced by ionization in the D-module due to the application of ECH. During ECH injection period, the increase of the ion flux near the corner of the target plate shows a clear dependence on the gas species. The 2D visible emission has been captured by the high-speed camera and a bright emission near the corner of the target has been observed. The spectroscopic measurement in the D-module shows that the impurity ion emission increases remarkably during ECH injection. These results indicate the detached plasma change to the attached state. Abstract: Impurity flow velocity measurements have been conducted for different magnetic field configurations in a wide plasma parameter range in the divertor leg region of LHD for understanding of the edge impurity transport. In all cases (densities, magnetic configurations, hydrogen (H) & deuterium (D) discharges), flows of several tens of km/s are observed. It is found that the flow in thick stochastic layer is faster than in thin stochastic layer configuration by a factor of 3. Different velocities of different charge states of carbon impurity are observed. The simulation with EMC3-EIRENE code shows similar trend as the experiments, but only qualitatively: faster flow in H compared to D discharges due to the mass effect, faster flow in the case of thick stochastic layer. However, synthetic spectra show discrepancy with experiments in the absolute Doppler shift, where the impurity velocity in the experiments is one order faster compared to the simulations. Abstract: Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of earlier intervention by an antimicrobial stewardship team (AST) on antimicrobial use, antimicrobial resistance rates, and the clinical outcomes, without changing the weekly intervention schedule. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted at Fukuoka University Hospital between April 2013 and March 2016. The effects were compared among three study periods (SP): SP1 (patients receiving anti-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus agents and carbapenems for ≥14 days), SP2 (patients receiving specific antimicrobials for ≥14 days), and SP3 (patients receiving specific antimicrobials regardless of the duration of treatment). Abstract: Abstract The OPERA experiment has discovered the tau neutrino appearance in the CNGS muon neutrino beam, in agreement with the 3 neutrino flavour oscillation hypothesis. The OPERA neutrino interaction target, made of Emulsion Cloud Chambers, was particularly efficient in the reconstruction of electromagnetic showers. Moreover, thanks to the very high granularity of the emulsion films, showers induced by electrons can be distinguished from those induced by π 0s, thus allowing the detection of charged current interactions of electron neutrinos. In this paper the results of the search for electron neutrino events using the full dataset are reported. An improved method for the electron neutrino energy estimation is exploited. Data are compatible with the 3 neutrino flavour mixing model expectations and are used to set limits on the oscillation parameters of the 3+1 neutrino mixing model, in which an additional mass eigenstate m 4 is introduced. At high Δm 412 (≳0.1 eV2), an upper limit on sin2 2θ μe is set to 0.021 at 90% C.L. and Δm 412 ≳ 4 × 10− 3 eV2 is excluded for maximal mixing in appearance mode.

We present charged hadron average multiplicities, their dispersion and investigate the KNO scaling in different kinematical regions. The results are presented in detail in the form of tables that can be used in the validation of Monte Carlo generators of neutrino–lead interactions.

41. PRECURSORY SLOPE DEFORMATION AROUND LANDSLIDE AREA DETECTED BY INSAR THROUGHOUT JAPAN

Abstract: Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique is able to detect a slope deformation around landslide (e.g., Singhroy et al., 2004; Une et al., 2008; Riedel and Walther, 2008; Sato et al., 2014). Geospatial Information Authority (GSI) of Japan has been performing the InSAR analysis regularly by using ALOS/PALSAR data and ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 data throughout Japan. There are a lot of small phase change sites except for crustal deformation with earthquake or volcano activity in the InSAR imagery. Most of the phase change sites are located in landslide area. We conducted field survey at the 10 sites of those phase change sites. As a result, we identified deformation of artificial structures or linear depressions caused by mass movement at the 9 sites. This result indicates that InSAR technique can detect on the continual deformation of landslide block for several years. GSI of Japan will continue to perform the InSAR analysis throughout Japan. Therefore, we will be able to observe and monitor precursory slope deformation around landslide areas throughout Japan.

43. Magnetic-sensor performance evaluated from magneto-conductance curve in magnetic tunnel junctions using in-plane or perpendicularly magnetized synthetic antiferromagnetic reference layers

Abstract: The automotive industry requires magnetic sensors exhibiting highly linear output within a dynamic range as wide as ±1 kOe. A simple model predicts that the magneto-conductance (G-H) curve in a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) is perfectly linear, whereas the magneto-resistance (R-H) curve inevitably contains a finite nonlinearity. We prepared two kinds of MTJs using in-plane or perpendicularly magnetized synthetic antiferromagnetic (i-SAF or p-SAF) reference layers and investigated their sensor performance. In the MTJ with the i-SAF reference layer, the G-H curve did not necessarily show smaller nonlinearities than those of the R-H curve with different dynamic ranges. This is because the magnetizations of the i-SAF reference layer start to rotate at a magnetic field even smaller than the switching field (Hsw) measured by a magnetometer, which significantly affects the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) effect. In the MTJ with the p-SAF reference layer, the G-H curve showed much smaller nonlinearities than those of the R-H curve, thanks to a large Hsw value of the p-SAF reference layer. We achieved a nonlinearity of 0.08% FS (full scale) in the G-H curve with a dynamic range of ±1 kOe, satisfying our target for automotive applications. This demonstrated that a reference layer exhibiting a large Hsw value is indispensable in order to achieve a highly linear G-H curve.

44. Annual layers in river-bed sediment of a stagnant river-mouth area of the Kitagawa Brook, Central Japan

Abstract: The river mouth of Kitagawa Brook is normally stagnant because it is easily closed by sand and gravel transported by littoral currents of Biwa Lake, Japan. A new urban area exists in the basin and sewerage works were constructed in the early 1990s, so contaminated water with a bad odour had flowed into the brook before the sewerage works. To reduce the smell, the river mouth was excavated to narrow the channel in the early 1980s. Thus, river-bed sediment after this excavation only occurs at the river mouth. From the upper 24 cm of a sediment core, we found 19 strata of leaves which were supplied from deciduous trees in autumn. We also found several gravel layers which were supplied from the lake during severe storms. The combination of veins and gravel layers were reconstructed for about 20 years of sediment records with an error of two to three years.

Abstract: Study question Could autologous adipose stem cell (ASC) mitochondria supplementation restore the post-fertilization development potentialin vitrified-thawed oocytes? Summary answer Autologous ASC mitochondria supplementation could rejuvenate the quality of vitrified-thawed oocytes and enhance the embryo’s developmental capacity. What is known already Pre- and post-implantation developmental potential of embryos derived from vitrified oocytes are remarkedly lower than those of fresh oocytes. Despite its’ low efficacy, oocyte cryopreservation is becoming prevalent in assisted reproductive technologies to cater the growing demands due to patients' sociological and pathological conditions. Unfavorable effects to mitochondrial membrane potential, mitochondrial structure, ATP production, reactive oxygen species (ROS), meiotic spindle and microfilaments, and Ca2+ ion regulation are reported as detrimental damages in oocytes following the cryopreservation, that adversely affect the development potential. Furthermore, autologous stem cell mitochondria supplementation can rescue the aging-related oocyte mitochondrial damages. Study design, size, duration The mature oocytes, autologous ASC, and mitochondria were collected from young mice and analyzed at Osaka City University, Japan. In total, 600 young mouse mature oocytes were occupied in this prospective study. Participants/materials, setting, methods Young C57BL/6JJmsmouse (8weeks) mature oocytes that have been pre-vitrified were thawed before the start of the ICSI procedure.ASC specificity and ASC mitochondria function and ultrastructure were pre-analyzed. ASC mitochondria were isolated on the same day and supplemented with intracellular sperm injection (ICSI) and as the control, the mitochondrial buffer was injected. The survival rate, fertilization rate, blastulation, mitochondria function, ROS level in 2 cell embryos, and live birth rates were compared between the 2 groups. Main results and the role of chance The ASC mitochondriashowed higher membrane potential compared to the somatic cells and were spherical in shape with low cristae numbers. The survival rate and the fertilization ratewere comparable in both mitochondria supplemented and control groups. However, theASC mitochondria supplementation seemed to havesignificantly improvedthe blastocyst development capacity from 2cell embryos compared to the control group (P Limitations, reasons for caution We acknowledge that the absence of compared data with fresh oocytes’ ICSI, the detailed cellular mechanism behind theimprovement of embryo development, and transgenerational safety in offspring developed fromthe mitochondria supplementation werethe limitations of this study. 46. Pressure dependence of the magnetic ground state in CePtSi2

Abstract: CePtSi2 was reported to exhibit an antiferromagnetic order below T*=1.8 K at ambient pressure, a valence state change at ~1.2 GPa, and superconductivity in the range between 1.4 and 2.1 GPa with the maximum transition temperature of 0.14 K [T. Nakano et al., Phys. Rev. B 79, 172507 (2009)]. We have performed polycrystalline and single crystal neutron diffraction experiments to determine the magnetic structure under ambient and high pressures. We found that incommensurate magnetic peaks with the magnetic propagation vector of (0.32, 0, 0.11) at ambient pressure below T_{SDW}~1.25 K. Those magnetic peaks which originate from a spin-density-wave order with the easy axis along the c axis and an averaged ordered moment of 0.45(5) mu_B, suggesting that there may be an intermediate phase between T* and T_{SDW}. Applying pressures, the magnetic propagation vector shows no change and the magnetic order disappears around 1.0 GPa, which is much lower than the critical pressure for the superconducting phase. The results suggest that other than magnetic fluctuations may play a primary role in the superconducting pairing mechanism., 6 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: OPERA is a long-baseline experiment designed to search for $\nu_{\mu}\to\nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode. It was based at the INFN Gran Sasso laboratory (LNGS) and took data from 2008 to 2012 with the CNGS neutrino beam from CERN. After the discovery of $\nu_\tau$ appearance in 2015, with $5.1\sigma$ significance, the criteria to select $\nu_\tau$ candidates have been extended and a multivariate approach has been used for events identification. In this way the statistical uncertainty in the measurement of the oscillation parameters and of $\nu_\tau$ properties has been improved. Results are reported.

Abstract: Alarge superconducting machine, JT-60SA has been constructed to provide major contributions to the ITER program and DEMO design. For the success of the ITER project and fusion reactor, understanding and development of plasma controllability in ITER and DEMO relevant higher beta regimes are essential. JT-60SA has focused the program on the plasma controllability for scenario development and risk mitigation in ITER as well as on investigating DEMO relevant regimes. This paper summarizes the high research priorities and strategy for the JT-60SA project. Recent works on simulation studies to prepare the plasma physics and control experiments are presented, such as plasma breakdown and equilibrium controls, hybrid and steady-state scenario development, and risk mitigation techniques. Contributions of JT-60SA to ITER and DEMOhave been clarified through those studies.
