The processing of hundreds of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images acquired by two satellite systems: Sentinel‐1 and COSMO‐SkyMed reveals a decade of ground deformation for a ∼0.5 km diameter area around the summit crater of the only active carbonatitic volcano on Earth: Ol Doinyo Lengai in Tanzania. Further decomposing ascending and descending orbits when the appropriate SAR data sets overlap allow us to interpret the imaged deformation as ground subsidence with a significant rate of ∼3.6 cm/yr for the pixels located just north of the summit crater. Using geodetic modeling and inverting the highest spatial resolution COSMO‐SkyMed data set, we show that the mechanism explaining this subsidence is most likely a deflating very shallow (≤1 km depth below the summit crater at the 95% confidence level) magma reservoir, consistent with geochemical‐petrological and seismo‐acoustic studies. La Palma, Canary Islands, had its largest historical eruption in 2021. From January 2022 to May 2023 there were >2,100 seismic events, primarily at depths ≤20 km, prompting us to update the deformation and modeling study, using interferometric synthetic aperture radar observations and a last generation interpretation tool. We detect the evolution of the remaining magmatic body in the SW portion of the island, with arrival of new magma moving into the oceanic crust out to sea, and a pressurized zone in the central‐eastern area, at regions of structural weakness. The current source characteristics have some similarities to the early stage dynamics prior to the 2021 eruption. Operational and multidisciplinary studies must continue to monitor either their stabilization or growth and destabilization. The ability to identify magma ascent using only deformation data over short time periods allows us to characterize unrest patterns and provide new insights into volcanic processes. Land subsidence, the gradual or sudden sinking of the land, poses a global threat to infrastructure and the environment. This paper introduced a hybrid method based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) and persistent scattered interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PSInSAR) to estimate land subsidence in areas where PSInSAR cannot provide reliable measurements. This approach involves training a deep CNN with subsidence driving forces and PSInSAR data to learn patterns and estimate subsidence values. Our evaluation of the model shows its efficiency in overcoming the discontinuities observed in the PSInSAR results, producing a continuous subsidence surface. The deep CNN was evaluated on training, validation, and testing data, resulting in mean squared errors of 5 mm, 9 mm, and 11 mm, respectively. In contrast, the kriging interpolation method showed a mean square error of 37.19 mm in the experimental data set. subsidence prediction using the deep CNN method showed a 70 % improvement compared to the Kriging interpolation method. Launched on 2022 December 16, the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite, using synthetic aperture radar interferometric techniques, measures sea surface heights (SSHs) across two 50-km-wide swaths, offering high-resolution and accurate 2-D SSH observations. This study explores the efficiency of SWOT in seamount detection employing the vertical gravity gradient (VGG) derived from simulated SWOT SSH data. Simulated circular and elliptical seamounts (height: 900–1500 m) are integrated within the South China Sea's 4000 m background depths. Geoid perturbations induced by these seamounts are extracted through the residual depth model principle, subsequently merged with the DTU21MSS model for simulating SWOT SSH observations. For comparative assessment, SSH data from Jason-2 and Cryosat-2 are included. An automatic algorithm (AIFS) is presented to identify seamount centres and base polygons using VGG derived from simulated altimeter SSH data. The analysis reveals SWOT-derived VGGs precisely locate all seamount centres, base polygons and elliptical seamount azimuths. The merged Jason-2 and Cryosat-2 data face challenges with identifying small circular and elliptical seamounts. Detecting long narrow elliptical seamounts remains arduous; however, SWOT-derived VGGs successfully elucidate the approximate shapes and major axis azimuths of the elliptical seamounts. Validated against 'true values' of VGG, the root-mean-squared deviation (RMSD) of SWOT-derived VGG stands at 1.33 Eötvös, whereas the merged Jason-2 and Cryosat-2 data exhibit an RMSD of 1.93 Eötvös. This study shows the enhanced capability of SWOT from its high-resolution 2-D SSH observations in advancing seamount detection via satellite-derived VGG. To tackle the challenge of keeping 5G mobile devices compact while supporting millimeter-wave bands, we've created an ultra-compact 4-port dual-band MIMO antenna with a defected ground structure (DGS). This design minimizes mutual coupling and covers a broad frequency range. Built on a Rogers TMM4 substrate with dimensions of 17.76×17.76 mm2, the antenna includes four planar patch antennas positioned perpendicularly at the corners. Each antenna operates at 28/38 GHz and features a rectangular patch with four rectangular slots and a full ground plane. The patches are separated by 0.5 λo, with the DGS further reducing mutual coupling. Both simulations and measurements indicate a significant reduction in mutual coupling (−39 to −60 dB), improving ECC, TARC, MEG, and DG. Flood detection from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery plays an important role in crisis and disaster management. Based on pre- and post-flood SAR images, flooded areas can be extracted by detecting changes of water bodies. Existing state-of-the-art change detection methods primarily target optical image pairs. The nature of SAR images, such as scarce visual information, similar backscatter signals, and ubiquitous speckle noise, pose great challenges to identifying water bodies and mining change features, thus resulting in unsatisfactory performance. Besides, the lack of large-scale annotated datasets hinders the development of accurate flood detection methods. In this paper, we focus on the difference between SAR image pairs and present a differential attention metric-based network (DAM-Net), to achieve flood detection. By introducing feature interaction during temporal-wise feature representation, we guide the model to focus on changes of interest rather than fully understanding the scene of the image. On the other hand, we devise a class token to capture high-level semantic information about water body changes, increasing the ability to distinguish water body changes and pseudo changes caused by similar signals or speckle noise. To better train and evaluate DAM-Net, we create a large-scale flood detection dataset using Sentinel-1 SAR imagery, namely S1GFloods. This dataset consists of 5,360 image pairs, covering 46 flood events during 2015–2022, and spanning 6 continents of the world. The experimental results on this dataset demonstrate that our method outperforms several advanced change detection methods. Accurate land cover information is pivotal in numerous planning and management activities. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data has emerged as a valuable resource for land cover assessment. Extracting scattering power components from Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data provides essential insights into the characteristics of land cover targets, aiding in their detailed characterization. Various techniques in radar polarimetry have been introduced to obtain scattering power components and explore their significance in land cover applications, typically leveraging full-polarimetric (full-pol) SAR data. However, applying these methods directly to dual-polarimetric (dual-pol) HH-HV or VV-VH data presents challenges due to the limited polarimetric information available compared to full-pol SAR data. Distinguishing between the scattering mechanisms of dihedral (or double-bounce) targets and trihedral (or surface) targets based solely on conventional polarimetric information is particularly challenging in dual-pol data compared to its full-pol counterpart. To address this limitation, our study introduces two indices (DpRBI and DpRSI) designed to characterize scattering from "dihedral-like" (e.g., buildings, bridges) and "surface-like" (e.g., water bodies, bare fields) targets in dual-pol SAR data. These indices, measuring the similarity of a given pixel to either a "dihedral-like" or a "surface-like" target, are then used in the Scattering Power Factorization Framework (SPFF) to derive the proposed scattering power components. The SPFF discerns the primary scattering power contribution within a resolution cell by factorizing the total power, employing the two indices. Our method applies to both Single Look Complex (SLC) and Ground Range Detected (GRD) dual-pol SAR data from operational platforms such as Sentinel-1 and the upcoming NISAR missions. We assess the proposed methodology using Sentinel-1 SLC and GRD SAR data for two scenarios. (1) Spatial variation in the scattering power components over various land covers near Delhi, India; Milan, Italy; and Barcelona, Spain. (2) Temporal variation in the scattering power components over rice-cultivated areas near Vijayawada, India. During these assessments, we observed significant variations in scattering power components over different land cover targets and rice-cultivated fields at various phenological stages. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems mounted on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are becoming a promising solution to inspect beneath the soil surface. In particular, resorting to Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) techniques, these systems are able to retrieve subsurface radar images, in which buried targets can be detected. However, one of the major bottlenecks of this technology is the significant amount of time required for computing the radar images (due to the usage of computationally expensive algorithms to handle non-regular acquisition domains). To face this challenge, this work proposes an efficient interpolation approach, combining a height shift operation with a 2D interpolation, that enables the adoption of a migration algorithm called Phase Shift Migration (PSM). As a result, the processing time is drastically improved, offering close to real-time operation. The proposed methodology has been validated in a realistic scenario for detecting buried explosive targets, comparing it with conventional backprojection techniques in terms of image quality and processing time. Millimeter wave operates within a wavelength range of 1mm to 10mm and can penetrate through various non-metallic materials, such as the paperboard and plastic films commonly used in cigarette packaging boxes. In comparison to X-ray devices, millimeter wave imagers have the added advantage of not emitting ionizing radiation and having lower electromagnetic radiation output than the standard limit for mobile phone. Given these characteristics, we believe that utilizing millimeter wave imaging technology for detecting missing carton in packaged cigarette boxes could be a viable solution. The paper presents the fundamental imaging theory and showcases some images of cigarette boxes. The results demonstrate that our millimeter wave imager can produce clear images of packaged cigarette boxes with missing carton. In this paper, sea surface waves during complex sea state (i.e. tropical cyclones (TCs) and Kuroshio current) are inverted from dual-polarized (vertical – vertical (VV) and vertical – horizontal (VH)) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images using an existing algorithm, namely, the parameterized first-guess spectrum method (PFSM). In particular, the wind term is included in two modulation transfer functions (MTFs), i.e. tilt modulation and velocity bunching. More than 3000 Sentinel (S-1) images acquired in interferometric wide (IW) mode and extra wide (EW) mode are collected, and the operational CyclObs wind product provided by the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Oceans (IFREMER) is collected corresponding to the TC images. Note that these images are located within 500 km away from TC eyes. The wave spectra during the TCs are then inverted using the PFSM algorithm and the SAR-derived wind product. Simultaneously, the 0.05° gridded wave spectra collocated with these images are simulated using a third-generation numeric wave model, called WAVEWATCH-III (WW3), in which the reconstructed wind based on the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) current, and the CMEMS sea level are treated as the forcing field. Comparison of the SAR wave retrievals and simulations reveals that the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the significant wave height (SWH) and mean wave period (MWP) are 0.55 m and 0.43 s, their correlation coefficients (COR) are 0.94 and 0.92, and their scatter index (SI) values are 0.17 and 0.07. These results demonstrate the better performance of the PFSM algorithm using theoretical MTFs, i.e. an RMSE of 0.68 m and COR of 0.90 for the SWH and an RMSE of 0.60 s and a COR of 0.87 for the MWP. Although the accuracy of the wave retrieval from the SAR image under complex sea state is improved when implementing the tilt and velocity bunching MTFs with the strong wind term, SWH retrievals by algorithm PFSM suffer saturation problem at SWH > 8 m. Matching optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is often challenged by intricate geometric distortion and nonlinear radiation differences, leading to insufficient and unevenly distributed corresponding points. To tackle this issue, we propose a lightweight deep convolutional network with inverted residuals for optical and SAR image matching. Initially, a fully convolutional neural network (FCNN) is designed to extract high-level and semantic features, robustly capturing universal characteristics between optical and SAR images, adept at handling geometric distortion and nonlinear radiation changes. Notably, we integrate a lightweight architecture with inverted residuals into FCNN to adeptly extract local and global contextual information, facilitating feature reuse and minimizing the loss of crucial features. Additionally, a vector-refined module is deployed to refine dense features, filtering out redundant information. Subsequently, a coarse-to-fine strategy is employed to further eliminate gross errors or incorrect matches. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed network in optical and SAR image matching against manually-designed methods and state-of-the-art deep learning techniques. Experimental results demonstrate that our network significantly surpasses existing methods in terms of the number of correct matches and matching accuracy. Because of high-resolution imaging in day and night and any weather condition, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has various applications in remote sensing. Building detection is one of the important utilization of SAR images. With analysing SAR images information, a new framework based on fusion of statistical, texture, and semantic features is proposed. At first, in order to reduce the speckle noise effects on the classification results, the SAR image is segmented into superpixels which the classification process is performed for these segments. Then, the statistical Fisher and Haralick texture features are extracted and the best features are selected. By applying an adapted VGGNet, the third type of features are extracted. Using training samples, the features achieving the highest classification accuracy are selected and applied to the classifier. Then, the classification output is improved by decreasing the splitting of the large-size buildings and false alarms using morphological operations and contour fitting process. The performance of the proposed framework is evaluated with two different types of TerraSAR-X images of urban areas. Environmental applications play a significant role in the ongoing research area of Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) image classification. In this paper, a new model is proposed for classifying PolSAR images and applied to a part of the Greater Cairo area in the Nile basin, South of Delta, Egypt. First, the proposed model performs data pre-processing by extracting the coherency and covariance elements noted as [T] and [C] matrices, respectively. Second, temporal convolutional networks (TCN) deep learning is used to extract the features from coherency and covariance elements and then train the model. Third, the SoftMax classifier is used to classify the PolSAR image. Finally, the proposed model is tested with evaluation metrics. The regional coverage satellite constellations are in demand for fulfilling earth observation needs of specific user regions of interest as opposed to global coverage thus enhancing the revisit period for the area. In this paper, we present a few key mission aspects of the regional coverage constellation designed and operated by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in low earth orbit. ISRO developed three X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Earth Observation satellites and placed them in three inclined orbit planes to enhance the Indian region's coverage. This is India's first inclined orbit constellation designed for remote sensing applications in low earth orbit. The satellites were built around a standard bus carrying a Synthetic Aperture Radar payload with a deployable Radial Rib Antenna (RRA). They were designed to achieve a high agility capability. As SAR sensors are capable of all-weather, day, and night imaging; thus, most suitable in inclined orbits where the illumination conditions vary continuously for imaging. Though the inclined orbits provide more revisit opportunities to the region of interest, their characteristics pose challenges in mission design and operations. Though the mission design and planning involved a host of elements, this paper brings out the details of a few key mission analysis elements, planning aspects and operations that were critical in the course of various mission phases. The mission analysis included mission-specific requirements like launch windows selection for the constellation and reference attitude generation specific to inclined orbit geometry. Mission planning had to take care of Radial Rib Antenna (RRA) deployment requirements which were very critical for the mission, apart from taking care of individual subsystem requirements. The SAR payload data product quality and targeting accuracy are very sensitive to the satellite image point range (vis-a-vis SAR operation data window). Extensive post-launch calibration activity was carried out to meet all these mission requirements and data product specifications. The challenge was in fixing the payload beam alignment and fixing the uncertainties in onboard and ground computations. The Pubugou dam is located on the Dadu River in China, with a height of 186 m. The fracturing body at 780 m upstream of its right bank poses a major threat to the downstream reservoir area's safety as well as the operation of the dam. In this study, a multi-source three-dimensional monitoring mode of space-ground-body is built using synthetic aperture radar, surface sensing, and rock mass stress monitoring. This makes it possible to keep an eye on the entire fracturing body in real time. This study proposes a GCPs selection method that combines the high coherence, small deformation reference points obtained by PS-InSAR inversion and stable deformation points, and realizes the high-precision bank slope deformation time series data acquisition method. It addresses the issue of strong subjectivity in the selection of ground control points (GCPs) in the SBAS-InSAR solution process in mountainous areas. The change in multiple scattering wave velocity and the evolution of the rock mass state inside the slope are both extracted using the seismic background noise cross-correlation technique. Through time series analysis and comparison of various monitoring data, the three-dimensional deformation characteristics, instability mechanism, and significant influence of rainfall on the deformation development of the fracturing body are summarized. Additionally, the adaptability, advantages, and disadvantages of various monitoring modes are evaluated. For the crucial slope of the project, a more trustworthy monitoring method will be available thanks to the mutual integration of the space-ground-body monitoring mode and data. Monitoring slow-moving landslides in densely vegetated areas using X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data posed challenges due to the dramatic loss of coherence during SAR interferometry and the relative lower precision of sub-pixel offset tracking (SPOT). The mountainous Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) in China is a landslide-prone region with unique hydrogeological conditions, where riparian slopes are mostly covered with dense vegetation. Here, we explore the potential of utilizing temporal stacking to improve SPOT (TS-SPOT) for mitigating background noise and enhancing the continuous deformation signal of natural scatterers on densely vegetated slopes. By leveraging redundant information in multiple offset maps, TS-SPOT demonstrates enhanced measurement capability, offering more precise velocity estimations and extended velocity field coverage than single pair-wise SPOT. The ability of the proposed method is illustrated for two large-scale, slow-moving reservoir landslides in the TGRA, the Outang and Xinpu landslides, for which TerraSAR-X High-resolution Spotlight (TSX-HS) images and GNSS measurements, and ground truth data are available. The monitoring results revealed a maximum of 40 and 10 cm/year average deformation rates along the azimuth and range direction, respectively. Owakudani (Owakuzawa Valley), the largest fumarole area in Hakone volcano, Japan, is a place where volcanic disasters occur frequently, such as the mudslide disaster that killed six people in 1910 and the phreatic eruption that destroyed hot spring supply facilities in 2015. Therefore, monitoring surface displacements that may lead to slope failure is important for protecting life and property. In this study, we estimated three-dimensional displacements from interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) analysis from the ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 satellite data and detected landslide displacement around Owakudani. Moreover, the temporal variation of the landslide displacement was clarified from the InSAR time series analysis results. The landslide displacement detected in this study corresponds to a pre-existing collapsed landform whose underground structure was unknown. Additionally, the results of finite element analysis clarified the subsurface deformation concentration zone, suggesting the displacement on the pre-existing sliding surface. The landslide displacement started after the 2015 phreatic eruption. Therefore, fluid injection during the eruption might be one of the triggers of the displacement. Moreover, the annual displacement variation corresponds to changes in precipitation, suggesting that underground pore pressure changes have accelerated the displacement. These results demonstrate that the series of our approach can contribute to understanding the causes and mechanisms of landslides for which underground geological surveys are inadequate. Reservoir filling in large hydropower stations triggers or accelerates deep-seated toppling deformations (DSTDs). In the absence of large failures, toppling can often last long. It is of great significance to study the mechanism of DSTDs for the prediction of affected areas before filling. Taking Yanwan (YW) DSTDs in Xiluodu Reservoir as a sample, we collected 17 scenes of ALOS/PALSAR-1 images and 45 scenes of ALOS/PARSAR-2 images and used the small baseline subset interferometry synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) and time-series offset tracking (TSOT) technologies to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of YW DSTDs before and after reservoir filling. The correlation between deformation and reservoir filling was analyzed with the fluctuation in the reservoir water level. Before filling, there was no deformation in the area of YW DSTDs. After filling, the maximum deformation rate of YW DSTDs measured by TSOT during the study period was around 1500 mm/year in the line-of-sight (LOS) direction. YW DSTDs showed a fluctuating deformation trend, and the deformation rates of the four filling stages were successively from fast to slow: rapid drawdown of water level period, high water level period, low water level period, and rapid rise of water level period. The soft-hard-interbedded structure provides favorable lithology conditions for toppling. The incision of the Jinsha River and the development of gullies led to the topographic condition of exposure on three sides, shaping a convex slope similar to a triangular cone, which provides advantageous topographic conditions for toppling. Tajikistan is an area characterized by several lakes created after rockfalls and moraine deposits collapsed due to its geographic position on the collisional area of the Euro-Asian and Indian tectonic plates. In 1911, a violent earthquake generated the Usoi dam, which led to the creation of Lake Sarez. The purpose of the article is to provide an overview of the ground deformation of the two landslides that affect and threaten the area of Lake Sarez exploiting the combination of two different techniques, the interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) method with the SqueeSAR approach and optical image analysis through the use of COSI-Corr software. The combination of these two techniques turned out to be useful and provide more information because InSAR method balances lack the optical analysis and vice versa giving the possibility to obtain a complete overview of the displacement of the area. Moreover, InSAR data have been used to reconstruct the geometry and depth of the sliding surface of a potential landslide that could affect the lake, generating a wave that could overtop the dam and affect the villages downstream. Rainbands are essential to tropical cyclones (TCs), significantly affecting TC structure and intensity change. High‐resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery can capture the footprints of rainbands caused by rain‐induced sea surface roughness modification. Using 464 SAR TC images, we investigated the rainband‐occurrence probability of TCs under different hemispheres, local times (LTs), intensities, and ocean basins. Results show that the rainband‐occurrence probability is highest in the downshear‐left quadrant for Northern Hemisphere TCs (downshear‐right quadrant for Southern Hemisphere TCs). For Northern Hemisphere TCs, the rainband‐occurrence probability is overall higher in the early morning (LT), and the peak region of rainband‐occurrence probability appears farther from the TC center in the evening (LT). Compared with weak TCs, the rainband‐occurrence probability becomes higher for strong TCs in the Northern Hemisphere. Furthermore, TCs have a higher rainband‐occurrence probability in the Northwest Pacific than in the North Atlantic and Northeast Pacific. The present study employs temporal C-band Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data within the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform to evaluate discriminability and estimate acreage of kharif rice across major Indian states. Utilizing multi-temporal Sentinel-1 Cband SAR data, including time-series cross-polarization vertical--horizontal channels, the research spanned states such as Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha and Assam. Employing five machine learning algorithms on GEE, with random forest demonstrating high performance, achieved 98.59% accuracy and 0.92 kappa coefficient ( κ) in Odisha. Subsequently, the RF algorithm was applied for kharif rice acreage estimation, yielding overall accuracies from 88.48% to 97.28% and κ between 0.87 and 0.96 with deviations from reported acreage ranging from 0.95% to 12% across diverse states. Slope instability due to tectonic, hydrological and anthropogenic activities cause severe landslides in Himalaya. Joshimath, a densely populated Himalayan town witnessed a catastrophic landslide event during December 2022 and January 2023 causing damages to ∼700 buildings. We use Interferometric synthetic aperture radar, Global Positioning System and rainfall measurements to probe the kinematics of the Joshimath landslide. We separate the seasonal and episodic deformation components using singular spectrum analysis. While the low amplitude annual landslide motions are modulated by seasonal precipitation, acceleration phases are triggered by extreme rain events. Our analysis revealed episodes of cascading motions triggered by extreme rain events resulting an overall increase in landslide velocity from −22 mm/yr during 2004–2010 to −325 mm/yr during 2022–2023. We estimate the landslide depth (∼30 m) and hydraulic diffusivity (∼3 × 10−5 m2/s) using a 1‐D pore‐water pressure diffusion model. Our study reveals the importance of systematic monitoring of ground deformation and weather parameters for landslide hazard mitigation. A recent catastrophic landslide event in the Joshimath town in NW Himalaya occurred between December 2022 and January 2023 caused damages to ∼700 buildings leading to mass evacuation. We map the spatio‐temporal evolution of land deformation at Joshimath using about two decades of geodetic measurements and singular spectrum analysis technique. While the decadal‐scale landslide motions match well with the overall increase in rainfall intensity, the episodic accelerations are triggered by extreme rain events. The extreme rainfall event on 19 October 2021, triggered the latest episode of landslide acceleration, which eventually led to the tragic disaster. Multistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a special mode of SAR system. The radar transmitter and receiver are located on different satellites, which brings many advantages, such as flexible baseline configuration, diverse receiving modes, and more detailed ground object classification information. The multistatic SAR has been widely used in interferometry, moving target detection, three-dimensional imaging, and other fields. The frequency offset between different oscillators will cause a modulation phase error in the signal. Therefore, phase synchronization is one of the most critical problems to be addressed in distributed SAR systems. Spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an advanced microwave imaging technology that provides all-weather and all-day target information. However, as spaceborne SAR resolution improves, traditional echo signal models based on airborne SAR design become inadequate due to the curved orbit, Earth rotation, and increased propagation distance. In this study, we propose an accurate range model for high-resolution spaceborne SAR by analyzing motion trajectory and Doppler parameters from the perspective of the space geometry of spaceborne SAR. We evaluate the accuracy of existing range models and propose an advanced equivalent squint range model (AESRM) that accurately fits the actual range history and compensates for high-order term errors by introducing third-order and fourth-order error terms while maintaining the simplicity of the traditional model. The proposed AESRM's concise two-dimensional frequency spectrum form facilitates the design of imaging algorithms. Point target simulations confirm the effectiveness of the proposed AESRM, demonstrating significant improvements in fitting accuracy for range histories characterized by nonlinear trajectories. In synthetic aperture radar (SAR) signal processing, compared with the raw data of level-0, level-1 SAR images are more readily accessible and available in larger quantities. However, an amount of level-1 images are affected by radio frequency interference (RFI), which typically originates from Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM) signals emitted by ground-based radars. Existing research on interference suppression in level-1 data has primarily focused on two methods: transforming SAR images into simulated echo data for interference suppression, or focusing interference in the frequency domain and applying notching filters to reduce interference energy. However, these methods overlook the effective utilization of the interference parameters or are confined to suppressing only one type of LFM interference at a time. In certain SAR images, multiple types of LFM interference manifest bright radiation artifacts that exhibit varying lengths along the range direction while remaining constant in the azimuth direction. It is necessary to suppress multiple LFM interference on SAR images when original echo data are unavailable. This article proposes a joint sparse recovery algorithm for interference suppression in the SAR image domain. In the SAR image domain, two-dimensional LFM interference typically exhibits differences in parameters such as frequency modulation rate and pulse width in the range direction, while maintaining consistency in the azimuth direction. Based on this observation, this article constructs a series of focusing operators for LFM interference in SAR images. These operators enable the sparse representation of dispersed LFM interference. Subsequently, an optimization model is developed that can effectively suppress multi-LFM interference and reduce image loss with the assistance of a regularization term in the image domain. With the number of new satellites increasing dramatically, comprehensive space surveillance is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, high-resolution inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging of satellites can provide an in-situ assessment of the satellites. This paper demonstrates that pseudo-noise signals can also be used for satellite imaging, in addition to classical linear frequency-modulated chirp signals. Pseudo-noise transmission signals offer the advantage of very low cross-correlation values. This, for instance, enables the possibility of a system with multiple channels transmitting instantaneously. Furthermore, it can significantly reduce signal interference with other systems operating in the same frequency spectrum, which is of particular interest for high-bandwidth, high-power systems such as satellite imaging radars. A new routine has been introduced to generate a wideband pseudo-noise signal with a peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) similar to that of a chirp signal. This is essential for applications where the transmit signal power budget is sharply limited by the high-power amplifier. Due to a unique imaging mechanism, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images typically exhibit degradation phenomena. To enhance image quality and support real-time on-board processing capabilities, we propose a lightweight deep generative network framework, namely, the Lightweight Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network (LSRGAN). This method introduces Depthwise Separable Convolution (DSConv) in residual blocks to compress the original Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) and uses the SeLU activation function to construct a lightweight residual module (LRM) suitable for SAR image characteristics. Furthermore, we combine the LRM with an optimized Coordinated Attention (CA) module, enhancing the lightweight network's capability to learn feature representations. Experimental results on spaceborne SAR images demonstrate that compared to other deep generative networks focused on SAR image super-resolution reconstruction, LSRGAN achieves compression ratios of 74.68 % in model storage requirements and 55.93 % in computational resource demands. In this work, we significantly reduce the model complexity, improve the quality of spaceborne SAR images, and validate the effectiveness of the SAR image super-resolution algorithm as well as the feasibility of real-time on-board processing technology. Coastal sediment grain size is an important factor in determining coastal morphodynamics. In this study, we explore a novel approach for retrieving the median sediment grain size (D50) of gravel-dominated beaches using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) spaceborne imagery. We assessed this by using thirty-six Sentinel-1 (C-band SAR) satellite images acquired in May and June 2022 and 2023, and three NovaSAR (S-band SAR) satellite images acquired in May and June 2022, for three different training sites and one test site across England (the UK). The results from the Sentinel-1 C-band data show strong positive correlations (R2 ≥ 0.75 ) between the D50 and the backscatter coefficients for 15/18 of the resultant models. The models were subsequently used to derive predictions of D50 for the test site, with the models which exhibited the strongest correlations resulting in Mean Absolute Errors (MAEs) in the range 2.26–5.47 mm. No correlation (R2 = 0.04) was found between the backscatter coefficients from the S-band NovaSAR data and D50. These results highlight the potential to derive near-real time estimates of coastal sediment grain size for gravel beaches to better inform coastal erosion and monitoring programs. Ships are important targets for modern naval warfare detection and reconnaissance. The accurate detection of ships contributes to the maintenance of maritime rights and interests and the realisation of naval strategy. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image detection tasks play a vital role in ship detection, which has consistently been a research hotspot in the field of SAR processing. Although significant progress has been achieved in SAR ship detection techniques using deep learning methods, some challenges still persist. Natural images and SAR images significantly diverge in imaging mechanisms and scattering characteristics. In complex background environments, ships exhibit multiscale variations and dense arrangements, and numerous small-sized ships may be present, culminating in false or missed detections. To address these issues, we propose a novel SAR ship detection network, namely, a Wavelet-Driven Feature-Enhanced Attention–You Only Look Once X (WDFA-YOLOX) network. Firstly, we propose a Wavelet Cascade Residual (WCR) module based on the traditional image processing technique wavelet transform, which is embedded within an improved Spatial Pyramid Pooling (SPP) module, culminating in the formation of the effective wavelet transform-based SPP module (WSPP). The WSPP compensates for the loss of fine-grained feature information during pooling, enhancing the capability of the network to detect ships amidst complex background interference. Secondly, a Global and Local Feature Attention Enhancement (GLFAE) module is proposed, leveraging a parallel structure that combines convolutional modules with transformer modules to reduce the effect of irrelevant information and effectively strengthens valid features associated with small-sized ships, resulting in a reduction in false negatives in small-sized ship detection. Finally, a novel loss function, the Chebyshev distance-generalised IoU loss function, is proposed to significantly enhance both the precision of the detection box and the network convergence speed. To support our approach, we performed thorough experiments on the SSDD and HRSID, achieving an average precision (AP) of 99.11% and 96.20%, respectively, in ship detection. The experimental results demonstrate that WDFA-YOLOX has significant advantages in terms of detection accuracy, generalisation capability, and detection speed and can effectively realise more accurate detection in SAR images, consistently exhibiting superior performance and application value in SAR ship detection. The unique P-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instrument, BIOMASS, is scheduled for launch in 2024. This satellite will enhance the estimation of subcanopy topography, owing to its strong penetration and fully polarimetric observation capability. In order to conduct global-scale mapping of the subcanopy topography, it is crucial to calibrate systematic errors of different strips through interferometric SAR (InSAR) DEM (digital elevation model) block adjustment. Furthermore, the BIOMASS mission will operate in repeat-pass interferometric mode, facing the atmospheric delay errors introduced by changes in atmospheric conditions. However, the existing block adjustment methods aim to calibrate systematic errors in bistatic mode, which can avoid possible errors from atmospheric effects through interferometry. Therefore, there is still a lack of systematic error calibration methods under the interference of atmospheric effects. To address this issue, we propose a block adjustment model considering atmospheric effects. Our model begins by employing the sub-aperture decomposition technique to form forward-looking and backward-looking interferograms, then multi-resolution weighted correlation analysis based on sub-aperture interferograms (SA-MRWCA) is utilized to detect atmospheric delay errors. Subsequently, the block adjustment model considering atmospheric effects can be established based on the SA-MRWCA. Finally, we use robust Helmert variance component estimation (RHVCE) to build the posterior stochastic model to improve parameter estimation accuracy. Due to the lack of spaceborne P-band data, this paper utilized L-band Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS)-1 PALSAR data, which is also long-wavelength, to emulate systematic error calibration of the BIOMASS mission. We chose climatically diverse inland regions of Asia and the coastal regions of South America to assess the model's effectiveness. The results show that the proposed block adjustment model considering atmospheric effects improved accuracy by 72.2% in the inland test site, with root mean square error (RMSE) decreasing from 10.85 m to 3.02 m. Accurate estimates of tropical cyclone (TC) intensity are important for improving forecasts as well as studying ocean dynamics during such extreme events. Since most cyclone life occurs over the open ocean, remote sensing techniques play an important role in obtaining the necessary data. The possibility of using the configuration of spiral signatures of mature tropical cyclones (TCs) observed in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images to estimate the maximum wind speed of a TC is considered. This study assessed the intensity of 14 TCs in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans using radar images obtained by the Radarsat Hurricane Application Project. TC intensity was estimated using the hyperbolic-logarithmic approximation of TC spiral signatures (HLS approximation). Additionally, the edges of the spiral signatures were partially fitted using a logarithmic spiral to improve the reliability of the HLS approximation. For the first time, a physical model of changing the crossing angle of the logarithmic portion of the edges was proposed and tested on SAR images of the TC. HLS maximum wind speed estimates were compared with Best Track estimates. The results showed the closeness of both estimates with a correlation of 0.95 and a standard deviation of 2.9 m s−1. Characterizing the coseismic slip behaviors of earthquakes could offer a better understanding of regional crustal deformation and future seismic potential assessments. On 18 December 2023, an Mw 6.0 earthquake occurred on the Lajishan–Jishishan fault system (LJFS) in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, causing serious damage and casualties. The seismogenic fault hosting this earthquake is not well constrained, as no surface rupture was identified in the field. To address this issue, in this study, we use Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data to investigate the coseismic surface deformation of this earthquake and invert both ascending and descending line-of-sight observations to probe the seismogenic fault and its slip characteristics. The InSAR observations show up to ~6 cm surface uplift caused by the Jishishan earthquake, which is consistent with the thrust-dominated focal mechanism. A Bayesian-based dislocation modeling indicates that two fault models, with eastern and western dip orientations, could reasonably fit the InSAR observations. By calculating the coseismic Coulomb failure stress changes (∆CFS) induced by both fault models, we find that the east-dipping fault scenario could reasonably explain the aftershock distributions under the framework of stress triggering, while the west-dipping fault scenario produced a negative ∆CFS in the region of dense aftershocks. Integrating regional geological structures, we suggest that the seismogenic fault of the Jishishan earthquake, which strikes NNE with a dip of 56° to the east, may be either the Jishishan western margin fault or a secondary buried branch. The optimal finite-fault slip modeling shows that the coseismic slip was dominated by reverse slip and confined to a depth range between ~5 and 15 km. The released seismic moment is 1.61 × 1018 N·m, which is equivalent to an Mw 6.07 earthquake. While the Jishishan earthquake ruptured a fault segment of approximately 20 km, it only released a small part of the seismic moment that was accumulated along the 220 km long Lajishan–Jishishan fault system. The continuous downward movement exhibited by the Lashagou landslide group in recent years poses a significant threat to the safety of both vehicles and pedestrians traversing the highway G310. By integrating geomorphological interpretation using multi-temporal optical images, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) measurements, and continuous global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations, this paper traced the formation period of the Lashagou landslide group, and explored its kinematic behavior under external drivers such as rainfall and snowmelt. The results indicate that the formation period can be specifically categorized into three periods: before, during, and after the construction of highway G310. The construction of highway G310 is the direct cause and prerequisite for the formation of the Lashagou landslide group, whereas summer precipitation and spring snowmelt are the external driving factors contributing to its continuous downward movement. Additionally, both the long-term seasonal downslope movement and transient acceleration events are strongly controlled by rainfall, and there is a time lag of approximately 1–2 days between the transient acceleration and heavy rainfall events. This study highlights the benefits of leveraging multi-source remote sensing data to investigate slow-moving landslides, which is advantageous for the implementation of effective control and engineering intervention to mitigate potential landslide disasters. Groundwater resources are crucial to socio-economic development and the ecosystem, and over-extraction can cause the groundwater level to drop, deplete reserves, and trigger geological hazards like land subsidence. The North China Plain (NCP) has experienced both subsidence and groundwater depletion due to over-extraction in the past 70 years. In this study, we used MT-InSAR technology and ascending C-band Sentinel-1 SAR data from 2017 to 2023 to study land deformation in the junction area of Shijiazhuang–Baoding–Cangzhou–Hengshui. We identified multiple subsidence funnels with a maximum rate exceeding −150 mm/year and a total deformation surpassing 600 mm. Seasonal decomposition methods accurately separated seasonal signals in the time-series deformation and groundwater level data. An exponential function model applied to long-term deformation showed no significant decrease in subsidence in severely affected areas. By modeling seasonal deformation and seasonal groundwater levels, we determined the elastic skeletal storage coefficients (Ske) to be in the range of 1.02 × 10−3~6.53 × 10−3 in subsidence areas. We obtained the spatiotemporal evolution of the total groundwater storage (TGWS), irreversible ground storage (IGWS), and recoverable ground storage (RGWS). The TGWS and IGWS decreased annually while the RGWS increased, which is attributable to the implementation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) and the issuance of groundwater withdrawal policies in the NCP. Landslides, resulting from disturbances in slope equilibrium, pose a significant threat to landscapes, infrastructure, and human life. Triggered by factors such as intense precipitation, seismic activities, or volcanic eruptions, these events can cause extensive damage and endanger nearby communities. A comprehensive understanding of landslide characteristics, including spatio-temporal patterns, dimensions, and morphology, is vital for effective landslide disaster management. Existing remote sensing approaches mostly use either optical or synthetic aperture radar sensors. Integrating information from both these types of sensors promises greater accuracy for identifying and locating landslides. This study proposes a novel approach, the ML-LaDeCORsat (Machine Learning-based coseismic Landslide Detection using Combined Optical and Radar Satellite Imagery), that integrates freely available Sentinel-1, Palsar-2, and Sentinel-2 imagery data in Google Earth Engine (GEE). The approach also integrates relevant spectral indices and suitable bands used in a machine learning-based classification of coseismic landslides. The approach includes a robust and reproducible training and validation strategy and allows one to choose between five classifiers (CART, Random Forest, GTB, SVM, and Naive Bayes). Using landslides from four different earthquake case studies, we demonstrate the superiority of our approach over existing solutions in coseismic landslide identification and localization, providing a GTB-based detection accuracy of 87–92%. ML-LaDeCORsat can be adapted to other landslide events (GEE script is provided). Transfer learning experiments proved that our model can be applied to other coseismic landslide events without the need for additional training data. The densely inhabited area of Naples (Italy), between the Campi Flegrei and Vesuvio volcanoes, is one of the most hazardous regions in the world. After two decades of sustained subsidence, Campi Flegrei has been experiencing an accelerating uplift since 2005. The uplift is currently associated with unusual seismicity and increased degassing. To try to identify the cause of the shift from subsidence to uplift and explore any connection between Campi Flegrei and Vesuvio, we analysed the ground displacement time series of the two volcanoes from 1993 to 2010, obtained from ERS/ENVISAT Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery. To distinguish between the various sources of deformation, we used simple scatter plots and a blind source separation technique called variational Bayesian independent component analysis (vbICA). We obtained consistent results using both approaches. Specifically, with vbICA, we identified two significant independent components (ICs). IC1 describes the subsidence that occurred at Campi Flegrei prior to 2000, including the mini-uplifts of 2000 and 2005, and part of the post-2005 uplift. The expansion and contraction of two volumes beneath Campi Flegrei satisfy IC1: a sill-shaped volume at a depth of approximately 3 km and a small volume at a depth of 1–2 km, respectively. The two sources of deformation reproduce the large-scale deformation in the Campi Flegrei area and the local deformation in the Solfatara area, respectively. In the Campi Flegrei area, IC2 exhibits primarily uplift, which is concentrated in the eastern part of the caldera. The deformation pattern is complex and difficult to interpret. If we model it using simple spheroidal deformation sources, the pattern suggests that two volumes at depths of approximately 9 and 8 km are experiencing opposite activity, namely contraction (beneath the southwestern part of the caldera) and expansion (beneath the central part of the caldera). In the Vesuvio area, IC2 is consistent with the deformation induced by the contraction of a volume at a depth of around 9 km. The contraction beneath Vesuvio is smaller in magnitude than the expansion/contraction beneath Campi Flegrei. The correlation observed after 2002 between uplift at Campi Flegrei and subsidence at Vesuvio suggests the transfer of magma and/or magmatic fluids between the two plumbing systems at 8–9 km depth. The Cyprus Continuously Operating Natural Hazards Monitoring and Prevention System, abbreviated CyCLOPS, is a national strategic research infrastructure devoted to systematically studying geohazards in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa (EMMENA) region. Amongst others, CyCLOPS comprises six permanent sites, each housing a Tier-1 GNSS reference station co-located with two calibration-grade corner reflectors (CRs). The latter are strategically positioned to account for both the ascending and descending tracks of SAR satellite missions, including the ESA's Sentinel-1. As of June 2021, CyCLOPS has reached full operational capacity and plays a crucial role in monitoring the geodynamic regime within the southeastern Mediterranean area. Additionally, it actively tracks landslides occurring in the western part of Cyprus. Although CyCLOPS primarily concentrates on geohazard monitoring, its infrastructure is also configured to facilitate the radiometric calibration and geometric validation of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Consequently, this study evaluates the performance of Sentinel-1A SAR by exploiting the CyCLOPS network to determine key parameters including spatial resolution, sidelobe levels, Radar Cross-Section (RCS), Signal-to-Clutter Ratio (SCR), phase stability, and localization accuracy, through Point Target Analysis (PTA). The findings reveal the effectiveness of the CyCLOPS infrastructure to maintain high-quality radiometric parameters in SAR imagery, with consistent spatial resolution, controlled sidelobe levels, and reliable RCS and SCR values that closely adhere to theoretical expectations. The efficient and timely identification of oil spill areas is crucial for ocean environmental protection. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is widely used in oil spill detection due to its all-weather monitoring capability. Meanwhile, existing deep learning-based oil spill detection methods mainly rely on the classical U-Net framework and have achieved impressive results. However, SAR images exhibit high noise, blurry boundaries, and irregular shapes of target areas, as well as speckles and shadows, which lead to the loss of performance in existing algorithms. In this paper, we propose a novel network architecture to achieve more precise segmentation of oil spill areas by reintroducing rich semantic contextual information before obtaining the final segmentation mask. Specifically, the proposed architecture can re-fuse feature maps from different levels at the decoder end. We design a multi-convolutional layer (MCL) module to extract basic feature information from SAR images, and a feature extraction module (FEM) module further extracts and fuses feature maps generated by the U-Net decoder at different levels. Through these operations, the network can learn rich global and local contextual information, enable sufficient interaction of feature information at different stages, enhance the model's contextual awareness, and improve its ability to recognize complex textures and blurry boundaries, thereby enhancing the segmentation accuracy of SAR images. In this study, a tracking and pointing control system with a dual-FSM (fast steering mirror) two-dimensional flexible turntable composite axis is proposed. It is applied to the target-tracking accuracy control in a GI LiDAR (ghost imaging LiDAR) system. Ghost imaging is a multi-measurement imaging method; the dual-FSM GI LiDAR tracking and pointing imaging control system proposed in this study mainly solves the problems of the high-resolution remote sensing imaging of high-speed moving targets and various nonlinear disturbances when this technology is transformed into practical applications. Addressing the detrimental effects of nonlinear disturbances originating from internal flexible mechanisms and assorted external environmental factors on motion control's velocity, stability, and tracking accuracy, a nonlinear active disturbance rejection control (NLADRC) method based on artificial neural networks is advanced. Additionally, to overcome the limitations imposed by receiving aperture constraints in GI LiDAR systems, a novel optical path design for the dual-FSM GI LiDAR tracking and imaging system is put forth. The implementation of the described methodologies culminated in the development of a dual-FSM GI LiDAR tracking and imaging system, which, upon thorough experimental validation, demonstrated significant improvements. Notably, it achieved an improvement in the coarse tracking accuracy from 193.29 μrad (3σ) to 87.21 μrad (3σ) and enhanced the tracking accuracy from 10.1 μrad (σ) to 1.5 μrad (σ) under specified operational parameters. Furthermore, the method notably diminished the overshoot during the target capture process from 28.85% to 12.8%, concurrently facilitating clear recognition of the target contour. Polarimetric features extracted from polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images contain abundant back-scattering information about objects. Utilizing this information for PolSAR image classification can improve accuracy and enhance object monitoring. In this paper, a deep learning classification method based on polarimetric channel power features for PolSAR is proposed. The distinctive characteristic of this method is that the polarimetric features input into the deep learning network are the power values of polarimetric channels and contain complete polarimetric information. The other two input data schemes are designed to compare the proposed method. The neural network can utilize the extracted polarimetric features to classify images, and the classification accuracy analysis is employed to compare the strengths and weaknesses of the power-based scheme. It is worth mentioning that the polarized characteristics of the data input scheme mentioned in this article have been derived through rigorous mathematical deduction, and each polarimetric feature has a clear physical meaning. By testing different data input schemes on the Gaofen-3 (GF-3) PolSAR image, the experimental results show that the method proposed in this article outperforms existing methods and can improve the accuracy of classification to a certain extent, validating the effectiveness of this method in large-scale area classification. With the increasing availability of satellite monitoring data, the demand for storage and computational resources for updating the results of monitoring the surface subsidence in a mining area continues to rise. Sequential adjustment (SA) models are considered effective for rapidly updating time series interferometry synthetic aperture radar (TS-InSAR) measurements. However, the accuracy of surface subsidence values estimated through traditional sequential adjustment is highly sensitive to abnormal observations or prior information on anomalies. Moreover, the surface subsidence associated with mining exhibits nonlinear and large gradient characteristics, making general InSAR methods challenging for obtaining reliable monitoring results. In this study, we employ the phase unwrapping network (PUNet) to obtain unwrapped values of differential interferograms. To mitigate the impact of abnormal errors in the near real-time small baseline subset InSAR (SBAS-InSAR) sequential updating process in mining areas, a robust sequential adjustment method based on M-estimation is proposed to estimate the temporal deformation parameters by using the equivalent weight model. Using a coal backfilling mining face in Shanxi, China, as the study area and the Sentinel-1 SAR dataset, we comprehensively evaluate the performance of unwrapping methods and subsidence time series estimation techniques and evaluate the effect of filling mining on surface subsidence control. The results are validated using leveling measurements within the study area. The relative error of the proposed method is less than 5%, which can meet the requirements of monitoring the surface subsidence in mining areas. The method proposed in this study not only enhances computational efficiency but also addresses the issue of underestimation encountered by InSAR methods in mining area applications. Large-scale crop phenology monitoring is critical for agronomic planning and yield prediction applications. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing is well-suited for crop growth monitoring due to its nearly all-weather observation capability. Yet, the capability of the dual-polarimetric SAR data for wheat phenology estimation has not been thoroughly investigated. Here, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of Sentinel-1 SAR polarimetric parameters' sensibilities on winter wheat's key phenophases while considering the incidence angle. We extracted 12 polarimetric parameters based on the covariance matrix and a dual-pol-version H-α decomposition. All parameters were evaluated by their temporal profile and feature importance score of Gini impurity with a decremental random forest classification process. A final wheat phenology classification model was built using the best indicator combination. The result shows that the Normalized Shannon Entropy (NSE), Degree of Linear Polarization (DoLP), and Stokes Parameter g2 were the three most important indicators, while the Span, Average Alpha ( α 2 ¯) , and Backscatter Coefficient σ V H 0 were the three least important features in discriminating wheat phenology for all three incidence angle groups. The smaller-incidence angle (30–35°) SAR images are better suited for estimating wheat phenology. The combination of NSE, DoLP, and two Stokes Parameters (g2 and g0) constitutes the most effective indicator ensemble. For all eight key phenophases, the average Precision and Recall scores were above 0.8. This study highlighted the potential of dual-polarimetric SAR data for wheat phenology estimation. The forest canopy active fuel load (CAFL) is easily flammable that is usually consumed in the flaming front, and is a critical factor in crown fire early prediction, suppression and response. Previous studies universally relied on optical remote sensing data, whose effectiveness is extremely limited in regions with cloud cover and haze, such as the southwest of Sichuan, China. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can work 24 h and is not affected by weather conditions. This study aims to evaluate the potential of volume backscattering coefficients extracted through decomposition of polarimetric SAR (PolSAR, Radarsat-2 C band) for CAFL estimation. The polarimetric decomposition method used in this study was based on Freeman-Durden decomposition. The separated volume backscattering coefficients were used to estimate CAFL based on the variant of the extended water cloud model (VEWCM). For comparison, the SAR raw observations and extended water cloud model (EWCM) were also used to estimate CAFL. The performance of these two models was validated through quantitative assessment, utilizing CAFL measurements obtained from southwest Sichuan and the leave-one-out cross-validation method. Results show that the VEWCM (R2 = 0.69, RMSE = 0.87 tons/ha) performed better than EWCM (R2 = 0.60, RMSE = 1.48 tons/ha) especially in HV polarization. We concluded that PolSAR has the potential to improve CAFL estimation and further assist with pre-fire risk warnings, fire suppression responses, and post-fire effects assessment. Ship detection in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is widely applied in marine monitoring. In recent years, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have made significant advances in SAR ship detection. However, the scene imbalance problem, i.e. much more offshore scenes than inshore scenes in SAR images, severely hampers the improvement of detection accuracy. In this article, we propose scene-aware data augmentation to address the problem. First, a novel concept, inshore rate, is introduced to estimate the land area percentage of various scenes in SAR images. We can divide image samples into inshore and offshore ones based on the inshore rate without manual category annotations. Second, to augment inshore samples, we synthesize dummy inshore images by cropping the ground truth bounding boxes (GT bboxes) from offshore images and pasting them onto inshore images. This offline data augmentation strategy can address the scene imbalance problem and improve detection accuracy. The experiments conducted on SAR Ship Detection Dataset (SSDD) and Large-Scale SAR Ship Detection Dataset (LS-SSDD) demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in improving detection performance. In the forefront of quantitative solar physics research using large-aperture ground-based solar optical telescopes, high-contrast observation along with high-accuracy polarimetric measurement in the solar active region are required. In this paper, we propose a novel high-contrast imaging telescope construction with a 60 cm medium aperture, namely, the PAthfinder in Solar Adaptive Telescope (PASAT), in which a deformable secondary mirror is used as the adaptive optical correction device and a symmetrical optical path design is employed, leading to the least Muller matrix polarization instruments. The telescope can provide a high-resolution magnetic field with high accuracy for the solar active regions, as well as high-contrast images with a superior signal-to-noise ratio and photometric accuracy of the solar photosphere and chromosphere. These data will be directly used for a better understanding of the evolution and release of magnetic energy, which will help in improving space weather forecasting. Flooding is a recurring issue in India, affecting 10–15 states annually during monsoon season and coastal regions due to cyclones. Microwave satellite data from SAR sensors like RISAT-1A, launched in February 2022, offers near real-time flood mapping crucial for relief efforts. Various acquisition modes, including medium resolution ScanSAR (MRS) mode, coarse resolution ScanSAR (CRS) mode and fine resolution Strimap (FRS) mode, provide suitable resolutions for flood mapping. Case studies demonstrate the behaviour of the backscatter coefficient in flood pixels, essential for flood map preparation. Validation against optical datasets shows a high accuracy of 91% in CRS, 94% in MRS and 94% in FRS, which is acceptable for near real-time mapping. The Earth Observation Satellite, EOS-4, launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation, operates in the microwave C-band (5.6 GHz), offering high-quality backscatter images for various thematic applications. In this study, we demonstrate applicability of EOS-4 data in visualizing and identifying geological features, i.e. landforms, structures and rock type variations. Through test cases, we have suggested optimization of parameters like viewing node, geometry, look angle and polarization for geological applications. In analysis of geological structures, SAR look direction and node variation are crucial, whereas for shallow and moist subsurface features, multiple polarizations may be investigated for optimum results. FRS data analysis is essential for mesoscale features like landslides and glaciers, to bring out the subtle granularities. Finally for lithological contrast identification, RGB composites and band ratios derived from the available polarization channels provides the optimum outcomes. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched its second civilian C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) mission onboard Earth Observation Satellite-04 (EOS-04). The SAR data monitors and measures various atmospheric features and parameters. In this paper, we report on the investigation of EOS-04 data for several atmospheric phenomena. One of the crucial parameters for studying atmospheric manifestations in SAR data is ocean surface winds and an algorithm for its retrieval has been developed using EOS-04 data. The wind speed products thus generated are evaluated using observations from the Advanced Scatterometer and subsequently used to study atmospheric phenomena like boundary layer structures. The EOS-04 SAR data is also demonstrated for studying structures associated with tropical cyclones, coupling of rain and wind imprints and distinct signatures of an atmospheric front. The study outcomes are used to interpret atmospheric phenomena and understand backscattering signals from EOS-04 SAR.
