Painkiller (mis)use in sport presents a range of potential health risks to athletes (e.g., injury exacerbation). There is a lack of qualitative data examining the sociological genesis of variations in attitudes toward painkiller use. Focusing on the concept of physical capital, this article explores how attitudes toward painkiller use among professional cricket players in England are socialized by their workplace. Attitudes toward painkiller (mis)use stem from field-level structures that foster employment vulnerability, ensuring physical capital is precarious and legitimating painkiller (mis)use as a method of protecting economic opportunities with the added benefit of accruing symbolic capital by demonstrating toughness. Purpose: Physical education (PE) teachers' interactions with students were explored to examine self-selection for PE teaching as a career option during school. Method: Semistructured life story interviews were conducted with 29 PE teachers at different career stages. Complementing occupational socialization, Bourdieu's habitus, capital, field, and practice were adopted as thinking tools to inform thematic analysis. Results: Three key themes were identified: (a) acceptance into the inner sanctum based on physical competence, effort, and enthusiasm for the traditional curriculum; (b) opportunities provided to students accepted into the inner sanctum, and (c) outside the inner sanctum: mismatched habitus and self-selection for PE teaching. Conclusion: Students exchanged competence, effort, and enthusiasm in the traditional curriculum for acceptance and opportunities to encourage self-selection for teaching PE. Without acceptance, individuals experienced challenges gaining career support. Studying social mobility can help understand societal development and changes, but it is lacking in nowadays tourism research. Focusing on tour guides, the present paper concerns how tourism employment affects intergenerational social mobility. We interviewed 22 tour guide families in Wulingyuan, China, where tourism has been the main economic driver for over 40 years. Drawing on the concept of capital with thematic analysis, we found that tour guide as a job (1) enables household economic growth (2) enlarges household social capital with networks of tourism associates and valuable customers, (3) cultivates individual cultural capital growth through at-work knowledge acquisition, skill development, and vision expansion, and (4) jointly improves individual symbolic capital in mianzi accumulation (higher social status). Some of the capital can be transferred to their offspring, which fosters an upward intergenerational social mobile trend. The key to successful transfer is parenting. The present study contributes to studies of tourism development and societal growth, highlights the advantages of frontline tourism jobs in promoting long-term growth for both the practitioners and their families, and pinpoints critical factors behind such long-term growth. In recent decades, attention to the role of actors in regional development has shifted from the role of 'formal and collective' actors to the role of individuals in change agency. In doing so, individuals mobilize their capacity to act, which comprises the total volume of resources accumulated over the course of their life. However, there is a lack of studies focusing on how such capacity is then mobilized for change agency. Therefore, this study seeks to reveal the patterns of how selected agents have used their capacity for change agency and how this is implemented in the specific spatio-temporal setting of an old industrial region. Based on the results of 64 semi-structured interviews conducted with agents of change and local informants in four old industrial towns in Czechia, we identified five basic types of how resources are combined and used during the implementation of change agency – change agencies driven by embodied cultural capital, by bonding social capital, by economic capital, with support from public institutions and those accelerated by symbolic capital. Approaches to cultural sustainability in the historic environment aims to recognise and leverage their inherent cultural potential. Historic areas have been the focus of increased attention due to their significant cultural capacity compared to other urban areas. This study aims to develop a conceptual model for cultural sustainability in historic environments, using Structural Functionalism Theory as its analytical framework. Cultural sustainability is conceptualised as a comprehensive construct, with its components drawn from various charters, declarations, and international protocols related to the preservation of historic sites, established by organisations like the Organisation of World Heritage Cities, UNESCO, and ICOMOS since the 1990s. Some components have also been chosen based on prior research. Through documentary research and literature reviews, the functions of each component are aligned with Structural Functionalism Theory. The research results offer a detailed analysis of the cultural sustainability system. In this framework, symbolic capital, cultural neighbourhoods, authenticity, and value serve the functions of adaptation, goal attainment, integrity, and latent pattern maintenance, respectively. This analysis follows the principles of the Structural Functionalism Theory by examining the distinct functions and roles of these components at the secondary level. This paper advances our understanding of how organisations engage in the process of Bourdieusian capital conversion during crises of socio-political legitimacy. We do so by analysing the arts sponsorship strategies of Barclays between 1972 and 1987. During this period, Barclays faced numerous challenges to its organisational legitimacy as a result of its continued dealings in apartheid South Africa and its ability to generate extraordinary profits despite general economic malaise in Britain. As a response, Barclays increased its sponsorship of the arts, exchanging its substantial economic capital for the symbolic capital associated with high-status arts institutions. We identify the forces that facilitated and inhibited these capital exchanges and how they affected Barclays' sponsorship strategies. This paper will be of interest to Bourdieusian scholars interested in capital exchange, to business historians interested in banking in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s, and researchers interested in the evolution of corporate sponsorship and philanthropy. This paper explores how a future – as something that can only be imagined but can inspire entrepreneurial action – can attract economic capital. We integrate Dor's (2015) model of language as a communication technology for the instruction of imagination with Bourdieu's theory of practice to account for how an entrepreneur's words can hold sway over an investor by virtue of meaning something significant. We introduce opportunity capital as the symbolic significance of the entrepreneur's future-venture story and the exchange counterparty to the investor's economic capital. Our portrayal of the future as a symbolic phenomenon inducing action by others offers foundational insights to research on the early stages of venturing and the acquisition of resources by entrepreneurs. The article takes the first steps towards a general theory of civil society elites, a concept not fully developed in either elite or civil society research. This conceptual gap hampers academic and public understanding of the dynamics at the top of civil society. To address this, the authors rely on the theoretical framework of Pierre Bourdieu to build a theory of civil society elites as managers of civic capital. This role is illustrated through examples from the differently institutionalised UK and Nordic civil societies. The first part of the article introduces the notion of civic capital and its emergence during the 19th century. The second part focuses on elite positions in civil society fields, demonstrating how civil society elites, as managers of civic capital, navigate between their constituents and other elite groups. These elites wield the power to consecrate social relations while misrecognising their own symbolic and economic gains. Recent scandals in the climate movement and UK and Nordic civil societies shed light on the symbolic aspects of the positions of civil society elites. 'What do you do?' is a stereotypical networking question. How professionals answer acquaintancing questions like this when first meeting sheds light on how identity is construed. Using data from a naturally occurring networking event for elite professional services in Hong Kong, this paper uses a close study of interaction and follow-up interviews to identify and examine proximal networking mechanisms and processes. Consistently, participants used some amalgam of emblems, things that convey a social persona, from four different categories: industry (e.g., finance), professional role (e.g., FX trader), organizational affiliation (e.g., Morgan Stanley), and hierarchical position (e.g., associate). These generate evaluations of projected/absent instrumental gain, holistic eliteness, 'interestingness', and social proficiency (based on how they are deployed), resulting in symbolic capital transforming into (un)realized and projectible material outcomes. Theoretically, these findings contribute to our understanding of networking mechanisms. Background: Family socioeconomic status (FSES) serves as a significant determinant for subjective well-being. However, extant research has provided conflicting evidence on the correlation between FSES and adolescent students' subjective well-being (SSWB). Methods: Data were collected from 12,058 adolescent students (16 years of age) by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018. Multivariate canonical correlation and Mantel test were utilized to investigate the specific connection between FSES and SSWB. Furthermore, a Gaussian EBICglasso graph-theoretical model was used to capture the topological properties of the FSES-SSWB network and reveal the interplay among multifarious components of FSES and SSWB. Results: FSES was positively correlated with SSWB. In the FSES-SSWB network, parental educational attainment and occupation status demonstrated the highest centrality values, thereby contributing significantly to the relationship between FSES and SSWB. However, family wealth, along with educational and cultural resources, displayed lower centrality values, signifying their weaker roles in this relationship. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that symbolic capital, rather than family affluence, exerts a dominant influence on adolescent SSWB. In other words, SSWB may not be detrimentally influenced by a deficiency in monetary resources. However, it is more susceptible to being unfavorably impacted by inferior parental educational attainment and occupational standing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines journalists' working experiences to understand how they hinder the recognition of female footballers' performances. It relies on 16 semi-structured interviews with Swiss sports journalists on Swiss French-speaking television. Guided by Pierre Bourdieu's theory, the study shows that advancements in the recognition of women's football are promoted by a combination of external actors' economic and political powers, while hindrances arise from internal factors within sports journalism. The embodied norms, routines and professional practices of journalists – that define performance as physical capital and naturalize hierarchies between women's and men's football – are disrupted by the credit (i.e. symbolic capital) given to women's football by the Swiss football league and sponsors for political and economic reasons. This specific case of football enhances our understanding of the cultural and social factors that hinder the recognition and appreciation of performances by women in sports. Why do business leaders, senior politicians and civil servants move to leading positions in EU civil society? The article addresses this question through thirteen unique life-work history interviews with leaders of some of the most prominent EU civil society organisations (CSOs). Inspired by sociological approaches in EU civil society research, the article combines insights from the literature on EU lobbying and CSO professionalisation with the Bourdieusian concept of capital to explore the specific social resources that EU civil society and individual elite actors gain through the process of boundary crossing. It shows how EU civil society gains predominantly cultural capital (organisational and procedural knowledge), social capital (professional and personal networks), and symbolic capital (status and publicity), while individual elite actors gain primarily a form of civil society-specific symbolic capital that is associated with the alleged goodness of civil society and the act of ‘doing good’ that might facilitate policy influence. The article provides original, first-hand insights into how the civil society sector seeks to strike a balance between passion and professionalism and raises important normative questions about the integration of elites across economic, political, and civil society fields in Brussels. Among the autobiographies of Spanish-language publishers, Carlos Barral’s project undoubtedly stands out, consisting of three volumes plus an autofiction, which he published between 1975 and 1988, precisely when his power as a publisher had expired. The set of these four texts is not only essential for understanding the socio-literary strategies of an entire period of Spanish, European and Latin American literature. In addition, it builds a complex and exceptional image of the publisher over time, in which can be detected the decision-making process, the importance of symbolic and economic capital, and the effect of the different literary and political struggles. In short, the repertoire of successes and failures, of alliances and enmities, of criticisms and self-criticisms that distinguish the position of the editor from that of other literary activity agents. Why do governments pursue flashy international development projects despite more basic material needs? I argue that economically questionable "prestige projects" can be politically useful for legitimacy-seeking governments of small states in the Global South. Prestige projects provide these governments with otherwise unavailable symbolic capital as well as a means for seeking international status. Using new data on China's global development finance since 1949, I document nearly 400 prestige projects and show they are concentrated in developing countries with small economies that increase their support for China's diplomatic interests. An illustrative case study of Costa Rica's national stadium shows how host countries use prestige projects to acquire national symbolic capital and pursue status. Evidence from a survey experiment in Papua New Guinea further demonstrates that prestige projects are uniquely associated with the national government and status-seeking motives. The dominant literature delineates that European museums tend to 'resist' the inclusion of immigrant and ethnic minority artists due to a Eurocentric evaluation of the art within a postcolonial setting. This study builds on this premise, but also emphasizes the significance of 'symbolic capital', as conceptualized by Pierre Bourdieu, in processes of inclusion and exclusion. While the evaluation of the art is of vast importance, inclusion and exclusion are also influenced by the relation between the symbolic capital of the museum professionals and the cultural and social capital of ethnic minority artists. Moreover, museum professionals in Dublin and Warsaw find creative ways of both safeguarding their symbolic capital and including ethnic minority artists. The research is based on semi-structured interviews with key museum professionals in several main modern art museums and galleries, and with ethnic minority artists, in the relatively new immigration cities of Dublin and Warsaw, as well as a review of past exhibitions. Elite schools, long tasked with creating a future national elite, often now find themselves competing in a global education market. This article explores how one such school, in Switzerland, articulates with the global imaginary of its local geography – in particular, with images of luxury tourism and safety – to appeal to a globally wealthy clientele. It unpacks the material benefits derived from this articulation, for both the institution itself and the individuals who attend it. The school, I argue, fostered a 'club effect' that enhanced the social and symbolic capital of (most of) its students, brought into relief by the scholarship students who were excluded from it. This article thus explores what kind of work is being done when a particular vision – that of wealth – is attached to a school, and for whom that work is done. With increased competition for talented students and academic staff, many universities have recognised the importance of brand building to better position in the field. This study selected a recently founded public university in China as the case to explore in what way a young university's brand is constructed and to what extent such a brand is recognised by different stakeholder groups. Multiple sources of both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analysed, informed by the theoretical lens of Bourdieu's symbolic capital. Findings of this study show that a university's brand conveys symbolic meaning and serves the function of distinguishing oneself from competitors in a non-market field. This study also suggests that the value of a particular university's brand is not equally recognised by different stakeholders. Human rights NGOs contribute to the formation of norms and policies around penality, and inform social understandings of what constitutes acceptable punishment. This article turns to the symbolic group-making work of human rights workers as agents who work with prisoners, and who also construct the image of the prisoner for the rest of society. I zoom in on the case of prison NGO work in Russia, a non-democratic country, and answer two questions: first, how do prison NGOs construct the image of the prisoner, and articulate their relationship with their social base and their networks of civic engagement? Second, what organizational behaviors do these articulations encourage? Drawing on 18 semi-structured interviews and observation at prison NGOs based in Moscow, the study shows that Russian NGO workers often view themselves and act as members of a middle class social movement in Russia. While NGOs tend to focus on the most economically disadvantaged and socially isolated groups in their work, the prisoners they depict when addressing the public and the press tend to represent more educated groups with higher levels of symbolic capital (political prisoners, those convicted of economic crimes, and former state employees), reflecting a desire to put prison on the middle class agenda. At the same time, prison NGO employees employ a class lens in their work with prisoners, and determine how to help prisoners based on their assessment of how the socio-economic background of the prisoner intersects with ethnicity, religion, ability/disability, region where they are serving their sentence, and region where they are from. In other words, prison NGO workers view prisoners through the resources they can accumulate using the simultaneous, intersecting dimensions of their status and their relation to other groups both in prison and outside. Social innovation has been associated with contributing to 'valuable' rural development; however, usually, the impact of social innovation has been identified in the aftermath of its development or implementation. This might be too narrow an approach, as an ongoing social innovation process in itself may already lead to effects that contribute to regional and social changes in a local community and beyond. This paper argues that collaborative valuation processes are embedded in social innovation processes, generating effects that contribute to rural development. Focusing on a case study that exemplifies social innovation processes in agriculture and food production carried out by a rural collaborative community in southern Italy, we demonstrate how three valuation phases, such as contestations and negotiations of norms, symbolic capital accumulation and recognition of actions, as well as re-definitions of values, impact community development through joint sense-making, empowerment and societal change. Our empirical results suggest the close intertwining of both social innovation and valuation processes. The empirical results demonstrate how collective valuation processes have micro-effects on the agro-economic system, on local socio-cultural processes, and on place-making activities. Methodologically, this paper builds on ethnographic methods, including participatory observations, semi-structured interviews, oral histories, and socio-spatial analysis investigating moments of valuation embedded in daily collaborative practices. This study seeks to explore the paratextual packaging of Suat Derviş's In the Shadow of the Yalı through a sociological lens, probing the connections between the consecrating power of translation and its role in dispelling cultural stereotypes. Arguing that asymmetrical power relations and translation flows have a significant impact on the representation of cultures in and/or through translation, the study first focuses on the stereotypical image(s) of the Turkish women writers in the Anglophone book market. Secondly, the study notes that the representation of Derviş for the Anglophone reader's reception is beyond the confines of those images, revealing the role played by the translator Maureen Freely in challenging the prevailing practices of Western image construction and dissemination. Thirdly, against the backdrop of the distinction between translation as consecration and consecration by translational agents, the study scrutinizes the paratextual framing strategies that serve to transfer the consecrating agents' symbolic capital to Derviş. The study concludes that while translation into a dominant literary field might be the initial step toward consecrating a writer from a less dominant culture, translation becomes an instrument that propagates existing power hierarchies when translational agents perpetuate the stereotypical representations that influence the positioning, promotion, and reception of translations. In metamodernity, as a new stage in the mental development of society, the priority is the sphere of meanings and sociocultural values that arise in the new reality. This circumstance problematizes issues of social interaction regarding the mechanisms and processes of value changes, in which symbolic capital occupies the main place. The purpose of the work is to analyze the value transformations of metamodern society and determine the place of symbolic capital occupied in it. The study was conducted in a synergetic paradigm; its methodological basis was made up of socio-philosophical, structural-functional and socio-synergistic approaches. As a result, the reason for the transition of the postmodern to metamodern type of thinking was explained for the first time; it is a new form of social interaction, which is virtual social networks, which resulted in the emergence of virtual habitus matrices. The author’s definition of the concept of «habitus matrices» is given - this is a mesostructure of interconnected habituses that, with the help of informal norms, regulate the everyday life of people. Their functioning through symbolic capital as a credit of trust is explained. The origin of habitus matrices is shown, mediated by the exclusion of delegates from the chain of interaction between institution and habitus. Instead of delegates, such intermediaries are now often virtual social networks or other types of social communications. The risks of transformation of basic values are identified, among them the main one is the emerging crisis of legitimation, which can reduce the effectiveness of institutional regulation and lead to the growth of marginal zones of society. The author’s solution to the problem of the riskiness of value transformations of society is proposed, which consists in the idea of improving the methods of institutional regulation of virtual habitus matrices. It is concluded that, firstly, in a metamodern society, symbolic capital performs the function of selecting values that are most conducive to social interaction and stability and, secondly, that metamodern values direct individuals to socialization and the development of social relations. The results of the study can be applied in the field of social management, in socio-philosophical science, social theory and practice.

Although advocacy is central to cultural transformations, claims makers are social actors who struggle for meaning and power. This article focuses on Global Athlete (GA) to analyse the stakes behind advocacy. This sports advocate has engaged a frame keying, even fabrication, to gain recognition in the global sport landscape. GA's activity is examined on two levels. First, the article analyses how, to become a credible actor, GA framed itself by claiming to be 'the voice of the athletes' and appropriating the athletes' symbolic capital. Second, this appropriation's economic, political and social resources are identified. This case study highlights the interest of combining Goffman and Bourdieu to understand how GA's framing captures individuals' symbolic capital and how keying a frame, as an advocate committed to protecting athletes' rights, served power struggles within the sports field. The association of colonial power with turban has not been made since the beginning of British rule in India. This link has been developed through various setbacks. The Britishers' perceptions about the dress of the native employees was not as same in the 1880s–90s as it was in the 1800s. As the time progressed, the body-politics related to colonizer's sartorial manners in India matured. By attaching the tag of "civilized" to own sartorial etiquette, the Britishers made their social etiquette inaccessible to the natives for power's sake. It was from this mentality that the Britishers created an English-educated class in Indian Native society, who used to consider following many indigenous customs and manners tantamount to their backwardness. Wearing a turban was among one of them. Based on Bourdieu's field theory, the article discusses the challenges and coping strategies of digital media in the development of the B&B industry. In the Internet field, the power struggle between B&B operators and consumers becomes the main focus. By utilizing the Internet platform, B&B operators compete to increase brand awareness and influence and attract consumers' attention. Meanwhile, consumers also influence B&B brands through the Internet field, forming a complex, competitive network. In the competition for symbolic capital, B&Bs gain social recognition through the Netflix effect and celebrity recommendations to further enhance their image and competitiveness, and through self-media accounts and matrix content marketing, B&B content is widely disseminated to enhance their exposure in the Internet arena. However, the B&B industry is also facing the problem of homogenization and needs to maintain its personalized characteristics in competition. Background: Grounded in Bourdieu's theory of human practice, this study aims to examine how individuals as social agents made sense of and acted upon their COVID-19 experiences. A recent conceptualization of health capital is utilized to explain the practices of patients in the pandemic, in relation to their biographical background. Methods: This is a qualitative research in which the data were collected by biographical narrative interviews through a theoretical sampling approach. Eighteen interviews with COVID-19 patients were conducted and 8 of them were analyzed by the Documentary Method. Results: The informants made sense of their illness experiences through their health capital, which is manifested in their self-perception of health, their attitudes towards the healthcare system, their conception of terms such as luck, their work status, and the gendered division of labour at home in the COVID-19 pandemic. All the manifestations are mediated by the social, cultural, and economic capital of the informants, and their habitual practices are based on their symbolic capital. Conclusion: The study depicts how social agents' health capital manifested in the pandemic, relying on their symbolic capital, and shaping their practices. Further research across diverse contexts is needed to fully understand extra dimensions of health capital as a descriptor of the social determinants of health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Waist beads are important cultural accessories with different layers of signification among young women in Calabar metropolis, Cross River State, south-eastern Nigeria. Drawing on ethnographic qualitative approaches involving focus group and semi-structured interviews with thirty participants who were purposively sampled, this article explores the social, symbolic and aesthetic values of waist beads based on subjective accounts and nuanced experiences of young women who have used them for varying length of time. The study is anchored on ethnosemiotic methods and anthropo-semiotic framework to foreground an investigation of indigenous system of signs in a particular cultural context. It aims to interrogate how young women make sense of body practices and representations through waist beads in shaping their social universe. Waist beads can be identified as social texts with enormous symbolic capital that is useful in beauty projects, fertility narratives, discourses of spirituality and the expression of femininity. The study concludes that waist beads are essential components of participants' material culture that provide new opportunities for self-expression, self-representation and personal identity construction. This article explores and clarifies the usage of social and symbolic capital as applied to fan studies. It illustrates the author's definitions with a case study from the neglected arena of dark fandom. I argue that 'social capital' should be used to refer to the network of friends and associates agents possess within a subculture, whether dyadic, triadic or multidirectional, but that to qualify as social capital, there must be mutual recognition of the tie. I illustrate this argument through a case study of the online presence and persona of Taylor James, the owner and proprietor of leading murderabilia auction site CultCollectibles.org. 'Murderabilia' refers to items formerly possessed by or associated with celebrity criminals, particularly serial killers. I further establish that contra Thornton, we do not observe mainstream condemnation generating subcultural capital within this sphere, but rather, mainstream media attention can be negotiated by appeals to traditional forms of expertise. Academia today is deeply hierarchical and continues to be centered around perceptions of prestige and symbolic capital. The symbolic capital, or pedigree, associated with the training one receives at the graduate level greatly informs how academics navigate their careers and how they advance professionally. In investigating the formation of the professional habitus of Indonesian academics, we are interested in how their graduate training informs both their career progression and their teaching practices. We theorize graduate training using the terms 'hybrid' for the participants who have a mix of overseas and domestic training and 'homegrown' for those who were educated solely in Indonesia. The data suggests that hybrid academics in Indonesia are more open to innovating their teaching practice and advance at a quicker pace than homegrown academics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes the power relations in the field of German economics. By incorporating the capital and field theory of Pierre Bourdieu, the study investigates the distribution of economic, social, and symbolic capital on economists in Germany. In a first step, the three forms of capital have been defined and operationalized on publicly available information. This leads to eight main samples of economists. In a second step, information on these economists have been collected to derive indicators regarding their paradigmatic stance and institutional background. The findings indicate a monopolization of mainstream economics and concentration of resources on the large economic departments. Furthermore, these characteristics relate to an increased importance of Colander's Edge, an almost complete marginalization of heterodox economics and a significant center-periphery disparity. Context and purpose: In the situation of responsible consumption, the tourist considers the impact of consumption behavior on the environment, economy, society, and culture of the destination, and consciously maximizes positive effects and minimizes negative effects. Considering the importance of responsible consumption, especially the importance of this type of behavior among tourists, the present research has tried to provide a sociological analysis of responsible consumption with an emphasis on Bourdieu's theory. Design/methodology/approach: This research was done with an emphasis on a quantitative approach and focusing on survey strategy. The statistical population of this study was tourists visiting tourist places in Mazandaran province. The research information was collected through a questionnaire from 385 tourists using a multi-stage cluster sampling method. Findings: The results of the research show the impact of various types of social, economic, cultural, and symbolic capital on the responsible consumption behavior of tourists. The capital structure (with 4 dimensions) has had a direct and positive effect (Beta = 0.76) on the responsible behavior of tourists. In fact, with the increase in the capital level of tourists, their consumption will also become more responsible. Also, the capital structure (with 4 dimensions) has been able to explain 57% of the dependent variable (responsible consumption). Conclusions and suggestions: Among the dimensions of capital, cultural capital has played the most important role in responsible consumption among tourists. Therefore, the design of cultural policies to promote the responsibility of consumer behavior, especially among tourists, is of great importance. Originality/value: Based on the research findings, culture is an important factor in the discussion of the tourist's buying or consumption behavior. Julia Lovell's Monkey King, the latest translation published in 2021, represents the newest achievement of translation and dissemination of Xiyouji in the Anglophone world. Taking the previous translations into account, this article draws on Pierre Bourdieu's field theory, i.e., field, capital and habitus, to explore Lovell's retranslating behavior during the translation process of Monkey King and explains the underlying social mechanism. It is found that Lovell's Monkey King strikes a balance between popularizing translation and scholastic translation as well as has a feminist aura, which reflects the inheritance and surpassing of previous translations. On the one hand, influenced by the social trajectory of female consciousness, academic research, and translation experiences, Lovell's Monkey King is the external representation of her habitus as a female sinologist translator. On the other hand, Lovell attempts to borrow, transform and accumulate different types of capital so that Monkey King can win the maximized number of symbolic capital and occupy a better position in the field. The changes on the Louisiana coast due to land loss can be understood as a process, and the social construction of these processes is highly complex. Due to this complexity, we will examine these social patterns of interpretation as well as individual experiences of coastal land loss in Louisiana within a neopragmatic meta-theoretical framework using several methods, data, researcher perspectives, forms of representation, and theories, with a special focus on the construction of coastal land loss by the media. For this purpose, comments below a YouTube video on a hurricane event on Grand Isle, Louisiana, as well as on-site interviews with people affected by coastal land loss, were qualitatively analyzed. The results were interpreted with the help of various theories such as the theory of three landscapes, Dahrendorf's conflict theory, Bourdieu's theory of social capital, and Luhmann's autopoietic systems theory. The purpose of the work is to acquaint readers with the sociological concepts of the French scientist Pierre Bourdieu using the example of the analysis of family relations in patriarchal families of North Africa in the middle of the 20th century. First, a brief biographical sketch of the founder of genetic structuralism is presented and the meaning of the terms «capital» and «agent», which are often used in his writings, is explained. Later, considering the literary work of the French sociologist «Practical Sense», the authors analyze why in Algerian families the processes of concluding a marriage depended more on the interests and expectations of large family groups and less on the personal likes and dislikes of the bride and groom. Pierre Bourdieu explains why in patriarchal societies fertility, family ties, housing, inheritance, and marriage are aimed at the function of biological reproduction, and how family clans maintain the stability of social and economic hierarchies. The French scientist substantiates the causes and preconditions of conflict and competitive relations in Algerian families and describes the strategies used by clan elders to maintain unity in family groups. The authors of the article look for parallels with the described similar processes observed in other societies and emphasize how generally accepted relationships in large family groups affect the behavior and further fate of specific individuals. In particular, Pierre Bourdieu clearly proves that the conclusion of a future marriage strongly depends on the structure of relations in family clans that plan to procreate. At the same time, not only the presence of economic, but also social and symbolic capital of both families is taken into account. Separately, the French sociologist describes the challenges faced by men and women when planning remarriage, with an emphasis on the pronounced asymmetry between the sexes, as well as the practical aspects of raising boys and girls in large families. The authors conclude about striking differences between the modern European understanding of engagement as a consequence of romantic love and its pragmatic interpretation in a patriarchal society, where the feelings of the bride and groom play a secondary role. This paper aims at understanding social practices and institutions that ensured the transnational diffusion, recognition, and renewal of the research program in the General Equilibrium Theory (GET), in spite of multiple critics and apparent theoretical dead ends. First, we trace the main conceptual developments of the Walrasian GET program since the 1950s and thus elaborate on its intellectual identity. Then, based on a systematic study of the educational and professional trajectories typical for several generations of GET scholars, we analyze a social form taken by this transnational and multidisciplinary "scientific community": an institutional dynamics of the Walrasian GET program, most common career patterns, and the forms of international and intergenerational transmission. We construct a database of GET theorists and apply to this dataset a technique of Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) in order to investigate the relational patterns between attribution of scientific credit (symbolic capital) and biographical properties in a transnational space of the GET scholars. This article examines an area that has received surprisingly little attention within the sociology of sport literature: the role of human movement and the ways in which it can be understood and valued. Drawing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Judith Butler, in this article, the authors have raised the possibility of sporting "movement capital." The authors argued that rules and regulations produce and legitimize particular types of movements, which are then reinforced through institutionalized athlete development practices and able to be converted to symbolic capital. However, movements might also be valued as demonstrating particular traits and/or invoking emotional reactions, and be recognized as familiar. The authors concluded that, through identifying the connections between Bourdieu's habitus and Butler's performativity, they can understand how the value of movement is constantly in-flux, constantly regenerating as athletes imperfectly produce and reproduce recognizable movements as part of their sporting habitus. This study aims to explore how MUBI, a digital streaming platform, transforms into a space for cinephiles and establishes its economic and symbolic capital in the process. Firstly, it stresses the evolution of cinephile, from the traditional cinephile to the contemporary cinephile, in light of technological advancements and the widespread use of the internet. Next, the strategies employed by MUBI are highlighted as it positions itself in the digital streaming field and solidifies its status as a company, thereby building its economic and symbolic capital. The findings reveal that MUBI has tailored its platform to cater to new cinephiles, offering arthouse film selections, festival coverage, the Notebook cinema magazine, and user comments on films. Particularly during the pandemic, MUBI showcased initial screenings and premieres of select films on its platform, distributed noteworthy festival films, and acquired companies producing arthouse films, securing a position in the cinema value chain. Ultimately, it has been observed that MUBI strategically appeals to the interests of contemporary cinephiles to enhance both its symbolic and economic capital.

This article considers the features of “ethnic culture” and its place in the everyday and spiritual life of the Russian urban population of the Republic of Tatarstan. Its symbolic and functional importance for various sociodemographic groups is explored. The population of Tatarstan is viewed as a single historical and ethnographic community descending from the Great Russians of the Volga region. The structure of the social identity types and the characteristics of ethno-cultural group practices are described. Special attention is paid to how social space and ethno-cultural needs are related. The comparative analysis of different social groups of the urban and rural Russian residents of Tatarstan is carried out. The study employs the hermeneutic approach to decipher social phenomena with symbolic meanings. The theoretical insights and generalizations are based on the materials of a comprehensive ethno-sociological study performed on the modern Russian population of Tatarstan in 2022 with the help of both quantitative (mass survey) and qualitative (in-depth interviews, focus group) methods. The results obtained show a direct relationship between the type of ethnic identity and the level of ethno-cultural needs among the Russian urban population of Tatarstan. It is also concluded that many ethno-cultural practices, from the ritualized tradition to personal interiorization, have transformed under the influence of the socio-cultural landscape of the city.
