The hydroxyalkyl amination of agarose gels was studied as an approach to improve adsorption of polyphenols and pharmaceuticals from water. Three commercially available agarose gels, Zetarose FlashFlow4, ZetaCell-CL6B and Sepharose 4B were chemically modified using tris-(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane, TRIS, and ethanolamine, EA. The adsorbed amounts of bisphenol A and diclofenac were significantly higher on TRIS- and EA-derivatives compared with the parent gels. Regarding bisphenol A adsorption on TRIS-ZetaCell-CL6B, a maximal adsorption capacity, Q max of 16 μmol/mL gel and an equilibrium dissociation constant KL of 2.7 × 10−4 mol/L were observed. Filtration of diclofenac-contaminated water through TRIS-Zetarose FlashFlow 4 resulted in a 10-fold reduction of the pollutant concentration within 64 column volumes of the effluent. The moderate binding affinity of polyphenols to TRIS- and EA-adsorbents facilitates efficient polyphenol desorption and column regeneration. The effects of TRIS- and EA-substituents in agarose gels, can be harnessed for the development of environmental adsorbents, as well as for the preparative separation of polyphenols and pharmaceuticals. We consider the physical shapes and textures of the prospective adsorbents with a particular focus on spongy macroporous cryogels. These innovative materials hold promise for future applications in liquid and air filtration.

Medicinal plants are a rich source of secondary metabolites, which can be used in veterinary medicine as growth stimulants and as next-generation antibacterials. Medicinal plants are used in the food, feed, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and other industries because of their antiviral, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. The feed industry has found use for medicinal plants because they contain substances with unique biological (antimicrobial, immunomodeling, anti-stress, growth-stimulating, etc.) properties. The use of synthetic antibiotics and hormones can be reduced by adding phytogenic feed additives in the form of powders or extracts to the feed. This improves the health of the animals and lowers their morbidity and mortality rates. This review aimed to study the role of plant-based preparation (phytobiotics based on extracts of medicinal plants) in the development of animal husbandry and the potential of medicinal plants as a resource for their production. The most important properties of plant extracts are their antibiotic properties, which can significantly reduce the use of feed antibiotics when raising animals and reduce antibiotic resistance in the human body when consuming animal products. The development of plant-based antibacterial agents and their application in animal husbandry are relevant given the high profitability of food production, which is a global trend that benefits both animals' and people's health.

In this work ruthenium based catalysts are tested as catalytic systems for the selective oxidation of levulinic to succinic acid. Very different in nature supports have been chosen in order to elucidate the effect of their textural and acidic properties on the final catalytic activity. The influence of Ru particle size is also discussed and proposed as one of the key factors. Medium range ruthenium particles supported on relatively acid supports are the best performing systems in terms of succinic acid yield, while the most active catalysts in terms of conversion result in important carbon loss due to reagent/products full oxidation.

Fermentation of both microalgae and macroalgae is one of the most efficient methods of obtaining valuable value-added products due to the minimal environmental pollution and the availability of economic benefits, as algae do not require arable land and drift algae and algal bloom biomass are considered waste and must be recycled and their fermentation waste utilized. The compounds found in algae can be effectively used in the fuel, food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries, depending on the type of fermentation used. Products such as methane and hydrogen can be produced by anaerobic digestion and dark fermentation of algae, and lactic acid and its polymers can be produced by lactic acid fermentation of algae. Article aims to provide an overview of the different types potential of micro- and macroalgae fermentation, the advantages and disadvantages of each type considered, and the economic feasibility of algal fermentation for the production of various value-added products.

This work proposes catalytic systems for fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using a series of functionalized carbon nanofibers. The catalysts were synthesized via finely selected covalent grafting in order to include a variety of functionalities like pure Bronsted acid, tandem Brønsted/Lewis acid, and tandem Lewis acid/Lewis base catalysts. After the characterization and evaluation of acidity strength and the amount of acid centers, the catalyst series was screened and related to the product distribution. The best-performing catalyst was also used to optimize the reaction parameters in order to achieve 5-hydroxymethylfurfural yields rounding at 60% without significant humin formation.

Nanocellulose materials are distinguished by their safety, biodegradability, and adaptability. It was shown that bacterial nanocellulose does not contain lignin and hemicellulose and has an ultrafine network structure. The wide compatibility of such materials with biological molecules and the ability to change their structure makes nanocellulose a promising material for medical applications. Today, in the production of nanocellulose, mainly softwood is used. Despite the obvious advantages of nanocellulose, the limiting factor in production is the high cost of wood raw materials and the environmental damage caused by deforestation. Therefore, there is increasing interest in cheap and annually renewable herbaceous plant biomass, which is a potential raw material with a negative cost for the synthesis of nanocellulose. This review aimed to evaluate the viability of using Miscanthus plant genus as the primary source of nanocellulose. The characteristics of various types of nanocellulose and methods for their preparation from miscanthus are discussed. Miscanthus plants are disease resistant, frost resistant, and grow rapidly. The biomass growth of this plant reaches 35 tons per hectare, and the life span of miscanthus reaches 20 years. Miscanthus is a promising source of nanocellulose crystals because it is rich cellulose. The development of effective methods for obtaining nanocellulose will allow the introduction of a new class of materials for the production of biotechnical composite liquid and solid compositions, as well as raw materials for the food, medical, and pharmaceutical industries.

The problems associated with the use of molecular hydrogen (transportation, storage and high cost) have pushed scientists to the pursuit of efficient hydrogen donors, able to reduce chemical bonds in the presence of catalysts through catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) reactions. In this sense, formic acid stands up as one of the most important and safest chemical molecules for H2 generation under mild conditions. It can be obtained from biomass through different catalytic transformations and used as well to upgrade biomass to platform chemicals. This review summarizes the recently published studies dealing with formic acid production from biomass (using glucose as representing molecule) along with its use in hydrogen involved reactions of different groups of platform chemicals upgrading.

Biologically active compounds, including polysaccharides isolated from microalgae, have various properties. Although Nannochloropsis spp. have the potential to produce secondary metabolites important for biotechnology, only a small part of the research on these microalgae has focused on their ability to produce polysaccharide fractions. This study aims to evaluate the physicochemical growth factors of Nannochloropsis spp. microalgae, which ensure the maximum accumulation of polysaccharides, as well as to optimize the parameters of polysaccharide extraction. The optimal nutrient medium composition was selected to maximize biomass and polysaccharide accumulation. The significance of selecting the extraction module and extraction temperature regime, as well as the cultivation conditions (temperature and active acidity value) is emphasized. The article deals with the problem of Easter iconography. The changes that have taken place in the Russian art of the 16th- 17th centuries are examinated. During this time, new samples for Russian icon painters have appeared. These are Western European engravings and Bibles with illustrations. The images from there are borrowed by Russian artists. This is how an engraving is copied from the cycle of illustrations of the Apostolic Creed. This creed is different from the Orthodox one. The fifth illustration includes dogma, that is not named in the Orthodox creed. There are different stages of image change. They correspond to the understanding of engraving by Russian icon painters. Firstly, the icon painters interpret the engraving and arrange the images differently from the composition of the engraving. Secondly, they create icons as an exact copy of the engraving. Finally, they create a multi-figure image with a central dominant. This new image is associated in culture with the ancient image of Anastasis, or rather, it is defined as its detailed version. Therefore, the ancient icon of Anastasis is connected with a new context. This makes it difficult both to understand the icon and the history of the "Descent into Hell" image. Only by taking into account the transformation of the icon can we talk about the meaning of the ancient image.

Nowadays, global climate change is likely the most compelling problem mankind is facing. In this scenario, decarbonisation of the chemical industry is one of the global challenges that the scientific community needs to address in the immediate future. Catalysis and catalytic processes are called to play a decisive role in the transition to a more sustainable and low-carbon future. This critical review analyses the unique advantages of structured reactors (isothermicity, a wide range of residence times availability, complex geometries) with the multifunctional design of efficient catalysts to synthesise chemicals using CO2 and renewable H2 in a Power-to-X (PTX) strategy. Fine-chemistry synthetic methods and advanced in situ/operando techniques are essential to elucidate the changes of the catalysts during the studied reaction, thus gathering fundamental information about the active species and reaction mechanisms. Such information becomes crucial to refine the catalyst’s formulation and boost the reaction’s performance. On the other hand, reactors architecture allows flow pattern and temperature control, the management of strong thermal effects and the incorporation of specifically designed materials as catalytically active phases are expected to significantly contribute to the advance in the valorisation of CO2 in the form of high added-value products. From a general perspective, this paper aims to update the state of the art in Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) and PTX concepts with emphasis on processes involving the transformation of CO2 into targeted fuels and platform chemicals, combining innovation from the point of view of both structured reactor design and multifunctional catalysts development.

The effect of UV-A irradiation (353 nm, 365 nm, and 400 nm) on the antioxidant properties of fresh vegetables (cucumbers, bell peppers, zucchinis) was investigated. This type of processing was found to increase the total content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids in vegetables. With a UV irradiation of 360 min at a wavelength of 365 nm, the greatest increase in antioxidant activity occurred in vegetable samples vs. untreated control samples. The total content of phenolic compounds increased by 34–58% and the content of flavonoids by 26–53% for various vegetable varieties. There was an increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes (catalase up to 86%, peroxidase from 38%, polyphenol oxidase up to 74% depending on the variety of vegetables) after 360 min of exposure (p < 0.05). The results of the conducted studies indicate that post-harvest ultraviolet irradiation of vegetables has the potential to control the antioxidant characteristics of vegetables; however, additional research is needed to form a complete mechanism of this effect and create a technology for vegetable processing.

Artificial intelligence covers a variety of methods and disciplines including vision, perception, speech and dialogue, decision making and planning, problem solving, robotics and other applications in which self-learning is possible. The aim of this work was to study the possibilities of using AI algorithms at various stages of construction to ensure the safety of the process. The objects of this research were scientific publications about the use of artificial intelligence in construction and ways to optimize this process. To search for information, Scopus and Web of Science databases were used for the period from the early 1990s (the appearance of the first publication on the topic) until the end of 2022. Generalization was the main method. It has been established that artificial intelligence is a set of technologies and methods used to complement traditional human qualities, such as intelligence as well as analytical and other abilities. The use of 3D modeling for the design of buildings, machine learning for the conceptualization of design in 3D, computer vision, planning for the effective use of construction equipment, artificial intelligence and artificial superintelligence have been studied. It is proven that automatic programming for natural language processing, knowledge-based systems, robots, building maintenance, adaptive strategies, adaptive programming, genetic algorithms and the use of unmanned aircraft systems allow an evaluation of the use of artificial intelligence in construction. The prospects of using AI in construction are shown.

Brain swelling is a major cause of death and disability in ischemic stroke. Drugs of the gliflozin class, which target the Na+-coupled D-glucose cotransporter, SGLT2, are approved for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and may be beneficial in other conditions, but data in cerebral ischemia are limited. We studied murine models of cerebral ischemia with middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAo/R). Slc5a2/SGLT2 mRNA and protein were upregulated de novo in astrocytes. Live cell imaging of brain slices from mice following MCAo/R showed that astrocytes responded to modest increases in D-glucose by increasing intracellular Na+ and cell volume (cytotoxic edema), both of which were inhibited by the SGLT2 inhibitor, canagliflozin. The effect of canagliflozin was studied in three mouse models of stroke: non-diabetic and T2DM mice with a moderate ischemic insult (MCAo/R, 1/24 h) and non-diabetic mice with a severe ischemic insult (MCAo/R, 2/24 h). Canagliflozin reduced infarct volumes in models with moderate but not severe ischemic insults. However, canagliflozin significantly reduced hemispheric swelling and improved neurological function in all models tested. The ability of canagliflozin to reduce brain swelling regardless of an effect on infarct size has important translational implications, especially in large ischemic strokes.

ABSTRACTWhile in scientific and policy discourse on responsible research and innovation (RRI) the desirability and sustainability of innovations are central, the business sector follows different logics revolving around competitiveness, profits, and growth. They manifest themselves in different discursive frames, indicate potentially conflicting interests, and allow specific incentive mechanisms to be utilized. This paper builds on discursive institutionalism, presents a qualitative comparative case study of ten EU-funded pioneering projects, and derives a generalized typology. It contributes to the theoretical debate on institutionalizing RRI by applying discursive institutionalism and through a nuanced understanding of three leverage points for organizational change in the business sector. We conclude that frames, interests, and incentives are interlinked phenomena and thus should be considered comprehensively. As our typology addresses specific contexts at regional, corporate and process level, it can be further utilized to develop tailored policies and strategies capable of institutionalizing RRI in the business sector.

Usatove was an important southeast European culture, part of Gimbutas’ kurgan cultures, that connected the world of farmers of Old Europe with the rising influence of steppe nomads at the Eneolithic–Bronze Age transition. While the Usatove culture is currently placed within the late Eneolithic–Early Bronze Age chronological period, emerging evidence suggests the culture formed genetically and culturally in the early part of the 4th millennium BCE. We propose that the biological and cultural foundations of Usatove lie at the juncture of the Suvorove–Novodanylivka branch of the Seredny Stig complex of the North Pontic Steppe, the Trypillian farmers of southeast Europe, with influences from Varna–Karanovo VI–Gumelniţa and late Stone Age cultures of the North Caucasus.

This article describes the most likely classes of proteins and molecular processes that specifically characterize schizophrenic spectrum disorders such as simple and paranoid schizophrenia, schizotypal disorder, and acute polymorphic psychotic disorder (APPD). The identification of patients’ serum proteins was carried out using mass spectrometry. For patients with paranoid schizophrenia, the proteins responsible for translation and transcription are characteristic. A significant part of the proteins of patients with simple schizophrenia regulate the cell’s main metabolic and transport processes. These are proteins of the receptor system, vesicular transport, and extracellular matrix, which mainly carry out catabolic processes. The proteins of patients with schizotypal disorder mostly coincided with the classes of other patients, apart from chaperone proteins, which were not found in other studied groups. These proteins are mainly involved in anabolic processes. The main classes of proteins found in patients with APPD are responsible for the metabolism of nucleic acids. Active apoptosis processes were also revealed in these patients. These results from our basic knowledge about the molecular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of these disorders.

The antimicrobial properties of baicalin against H. pylori and several probiotic cultures were evaluated. Baicalin was isolated from a dry plant extract obtained by extraction with water at 70 °C. For isolation, extraction was carried out with n-butanol and purification on a chromatographic column. The antimicrobial potential was assessed by evaluating changes in the optical density of the bacterial suspension during cultivation; additionally, the disk diffusion method was used. During the study, the baicalin concentrations (0.25, 0.5, and 1 mg/mL) and the pH of the medium in the range of 1.5–8.0 were tested. The test objects were: suspensions of H. pylori, Lactobacillus casei, L. brevis, Bifidobacterium longum, and B. teenis. It was found that the greater the concentration of the substance in the solution, the greater the delay in the growth of the strain zone. Thus, the highest antimicrobial activity against H. pylori was observed at pH 1.5–2.0 and a baicalin concentration of 1.00 mg/mL. In relation to probiotic strains, a stimulating effect of baicalin (1.00 mg/mL) on the growth of L. casei biomass at pH 1.5–2.0 was observed. The results open up the prospects for the use of baicalin and probiotics for the treatment of diseases caused by H. pylori.

This work shows a new method for the preparation of 100% carbon-structured devices. The method is based on resorcinol-formaldehyde polymerization, using starch as a binder with the addition of a certain amount of external carbon source before polymerization. Molds obtained by 3D printing are used to shape the structured devices in the desired shape, and the ultimate pyrolysis step consolidates and produces the carbonaceous devices. The proposed method allows obtaining supports with different textural and surface properties varying the carbonaceous source, the solvent, or the pyrolysis conditions, among other factors. The as-obtained devices have demonstrated their usefulness as palladium supports for the gas-phase formic acid dehydrogenation reaction. The monolith shows a high conversion of formic acid (81% according to H2 production) and a high selectivity towards hydrogen production at mild temperatures (80% at 423 K).

Competent management of the production and consumption of waste is the foundation for ensuring a favorable environment in cities and comfortable living conditions for the population. Laws and regulations play a key role in this process since they determine measures aimed at creating conditions for safe waste management, an effective management system in the field of environmental protection from waste pollution. In the cities of many developing countries, including Russia, despite the efforts being made, there is an increase in the volume of municipal solid waste. Solving the problems of waste management has been set as a national task. The article analyzes the current condition of solid waste management systems in developed and developing countries and identifies the features and prospects of waste management, including the one in Russia. It is established that the existing set of organizational, sanitary, and legal measures, and legal regulation of relations and law enforcement practices in the field of solid municipal waste management in many developing countries is still in the forming stage. The positive experiences of countries in implementing sustainable systems of safe waste management and the positions of judicial bodies on controversial issues of waste management in cities can be used as the basis for an environmental policy of safe waste management at all levels of public authority, as well as improving legislation in the field of waste management.

This article aims to present some new academic journals on the history of pedagogy and education published in Russia today. These journals were mainly founded after 2003, and, since then, have been contributing to a substantial revival in the field of the history of education and pedagogy. This paper is divided into five parts. The introduction presents some major changes that have occurred in the history of education and pedagogy in post-Communist Russia since the end of the 20th century until the first decades of the 21st century. The three following parts, each divided into two sections, are dedicated to one of the most important Yearbooks and to the two main Russian academic journals, in particular to their institutional connections and evolution over the last decades: The History of Pedagogy Yearbook (IPE) (1.a); The History of Education Journal (IPZ) (2.a); National and Foreign Pedagogy (OZP) (3.a). These journals are published, respectively, by the Academy of Public Administration (Moscow) (1.b); the Nizhnii Tagil State Social Pedagogical Institute/the Russian State Vocational Pedagogical University (Ekaterinburg) (2.b); and the Institute for Strategy of Education Development of the Russian Academy of Education (Moscow) (3.b). The conclusion will also provide an overview of other relevant academic journals which have contributed to the history of education by publishing both monographic issues and individual articles. Finally, this article highlights major scientific achievements in the field, yielding rich, intensive and promising new historiographical discoveries.

Bacteriocins are of great interest as potential antimicrobial agents against various types of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Isolates of microorganisms derived from natural sources were used in the current study, including lactic acid bacteria and other antagonistic microorganisms. The species of the microorganisms were determined using 16S rDNA and ITS nrDNA analyses. E. coli, S. enterica, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, B. mycoides, A. faecalis, P. vulgaris, S. flexneri , L. monocytogenes, C. albicans, A. flavus, and P. citrinum were used as pathogenic and opportunistic strains. It was found that 11 strains of antagonistic microorganisms have significant antimicrobial activity against all pathogenic and opportunistic microorganisms. The antimicrobial properties of these microorganisms are currently under study.

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is one of the major medical problems that the modern world is currently facing. Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus both result in early disability and death, as well as serious social and financial problems. In some cases, synthetic drugs can be quite effective in the treatment of diabetes, though they have side effects. Plant-derived pharmacological substances are of particular interest. This review aims to study the antidiabetic properties of secondary plant metabolites. Existing review and research articles on the investigation of the antidiabetic properties of secondary plant metabolites, the methods of their isolation, and their use in diabetes mellitus, as well as separate articles that confirm the relevance of the topic and expand the understanding of the properties and mechanisms of action of plant metabolites, were analyzed for this review. The structure and properties of plants used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus, including plant antioxidants, polysaccharides, alkaloids, and insulin-like plant substances, as well as their antidiabetic properties and mechanisms for lowering blood sugar, are presented. The main advantages and disadvantages of using phytocomponents to treat diabetes are outlined. The types of complications of diabetes mellitus and the effects of medicinal plants and their phytocomponents on them are described. The effects of phytopreparations used to treat diabetes mellitus on the human gut microbiota are discussed. Plants with a general tonic effect, plants containing insulin-like substances, plants-purifiers, and plants rich in vitamins, organic acids, etc. have been shown to play an important role in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and the prevention of its complications.

Cotton stalks-based biochars were prepared and used to synthetize Ru-supported catalysts for selective production of γ-valerolactone from levulinic acid in aqueous media. Different biochars’ pre-treatments (HNO3, ZnCl2, CO2 or a combination of them) were carried out to activate the final carbonaceous support. Nitric acid treatment resulted in microporous biochars with high surface area, whereas the chemical activation with ZnCl2 substantially increases the mesoporous surface. The combination of both treatments led to a support with exceptional textural properties allowing the preparation of Ru/C catalyst with 1422 m2/g surface area, 1210 m2/g of it being a mesoporous surface. The impact of the biochars’ pre-treatments on the catalytic performance of Ru-based catalysts is fully discussed.

The work reveals the results of studying the content of biologically active substances in samples of extracts of Ginkgo biloba callus cultures. Callus cultures grown in vitro on liquid nutrient media were the objects of the study. Considering various factors affecting the yield of the target components during extraction, the volume fraction of the organic modifier in the extracting mixture, the temperature factor, and the exposure time were identified as the main ones. The maximum yield of extractive substances (target biologically active substances with a degree of extraction of at least 50%) from the samples of callus culture extracts was detected at a ratio of extragent of 70% ethanol, a temperature of 50 °C, and exposure time of 6 h. Flavonoids, such as luteolin, quercetin, isoramentin, kaempferol, and amentoflavone, were isolated in the extract samples. As a result of column chromatography, fractions of individual biologically active substances (bilobalide, ginkgolide A, B, and C) were determined. The proposed schemes are focused on preserving the nativity while ensuring maximum purification from associated (ballast) components. Sorbents (Sephadex LH-20, poly-amide, silica gel) were used in successive stages of chromatography with rechromatography. The degree of purity of individually isolated substances was at least 95%.

Tanacetum vulgare is an herbaceous plant widely used in folk medicine. It is rich in phenolic acids and flavonoids, which have pharmacological and medicinal properties, such as anthelmintic, antispasmodic, tonic, antidiabetic, diuretic, and antihypertensive. This study aimed to confirm the presence of biologically active substances in Tanacetum vulgare and to determine the pharmacological spectrum of biological activity of Tanacetum vulgare extract components. When preparing Tanacetum vulgare extracts, the highest yield was observed when using the maceration method with a mixture of solvents methanol + trifluoroacetic acid (22.65 ± 0.68%). The biologically active substances in Tanacetum vulgare extract samples were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. Biologically active substances such as luteolin-7-glucoside (550.80 mg/kg), chlorogenic acid (5945.40 mg/kg), and rosmarinic acid (661.31 mg/kg) were identified. Their structures were determined. The experiments have confirmed the antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Secondary metabolites of Tanacetum vulgare extracts have been found to have previously unknown biological activity types; experimental confirmation of their existence will advance phytochemical research and lead to the development of new drugs.

Hunting is a complex type of nature management. In its process, objects of the animal world and the earth are used. Obviously, the relationship between hunters and other land users should be clearly regulated by legislation. The purpose of this work was to identify common and specific problems for different systems of interaction between hunters and land owners and to assess the possibility of spreading the existing experience of solving problems faced by the hunting sector to different countries. Three main models of the relationship between hunters and land users (direct interaction, cooperation, and division of rights) are considered. Each of the models performs its tasks and has its own degree of efficiency. The interaction organization model adopted in a country depends on the specifics of the conditions in which the hunting farm develops including economic, property, legal, social, and state aspects. It is established that the availability of hunting is best ensured within the framework of the cooperation model, the observation of the rights of owners—within the direct interaction model, the convenience of management within large territories of wild animal habitats—within the division of rights model. At the same time, it is incorrect to single out the best model by all criteria or to designate a model that is universally suitable for different conditions. In the hunting farms of Russia, the described problems of interactions are not related to the potential of the division of rights model as such, but to a lack of understanding that this particular model requires increased attention of the state. The proposals aimed at improving the practice of developing and applying models of relationships between hunters and land users are represented.

Formic acid has recently been revealed to be an excellent hydrogen carrier, and interest in the development of efficient and selective catalysts towards its dehydrogenation has grown. This reaction has been widely explored using homogeneous catalysts; however, from a practical and scalable point of view, heterogeneous catalysts are usually preferred in industry. In this work, formic acid dehydrogenation reactions in both liquid- and vapor-phase conditions have been investigated using heterogeneous catalysts based on mono- or bimetallic Pd/Ru. In all of the explored conditions, the catalysts showed good catalytic activity and selectivity towards the dehydrogenation reaction, avoiding the formation of undesired CO.

Microalgae are widely used to produce sorbitol, ethyl and methyl alcohols, acetone, organic acids, esters, pigments, chlorophylls, carotenoids, and other compounds. The purpose of this work was to study the potential of the Baltic Sea microalgae Arthrospira platensis and Chlorella vulgaris, as new ingredients for functional bread. Bread was baked with a dry mixture of Arthrospira platensis and Chlorella vulgaris microalgae (1:1). Gas chromatography, sequencing, chromametry, pH-metry, rheological methods, methods for determining the antioxidant ability of bread samples with microalgae for ferric reduction and removal of active free radicals were used for the research. When baking bread, the organoleptic, physicochemical properties, density, coefficients of elasticity, chewiness, stickiness, resistance to crumbling, the content of polyphenols and volatile compounds in the samples of bread with microalgae were controlled. It was found that with a higher content of microalgae in bread (3% of the flour weight on dry basis), the color of the crust and crumb decreased due to the degradation of the pigment during baking. The specific volume of a loaf with a large amount of microalgae (5%) was lower than the volume of loaves with the addition of 1% and 3% microalgae. It is shown that the moisture content increased with an increase in the amount of microalgae in bread. Replacing wheat flour with the amounts of microalgae of 1% and 3% did not affect the pH and water activity in bread. With the addition of 5% microalgae, bread became more sour, sticky, with a slight “fishy” smell. The addition of more microalgae led to an increase in polyphenols in bread samples, and, accordingly, to an increased antioxidant capacity. In total, 42 volatile compounds were found in bread with microalgae, which makes it possible to obtain functional bread. It is assumed that in the future, bread with microalgae will be competitive with ordinary wheat bread due to improved nutritional and biological value.

The ecological indicator values are the most common and sufficiently effective method of habitat assessment. The aim of our research review is to analyze current studies from 2020 to 2022 in which researchers have used Ellenberg indicator values to address a variety of problems. We limited the study to papers that are published in journals indexed by Scopus and Web of Science. The total number of records examined was 358. The number of records selected was 98. Visualization of the distribution of studies by country is based on the GeoCharts library. The results revealed that about half of the studies were conducted in Germany and Poland, and the most common objects were forests and grasslands. Almost half of the studies were devoted to ecological niches, habitat analysis, assessment of vegetation dynamics, and influence of various factors on plants. The analyzed articles are actively cited. In general, our research analysis revealed the effectiveness of Ellenberg indicator values for solving a wide range of urgent problems for a variety of plant communities, and different climate zones. The results of our research confirmed the advisability of actively using this approach.

Glycyrrhiza glabra or licorice has long been known as a commonly used Ayurvedic herb. This study aims to investigate the effect of extraction methods on the chemical composition and biologically active properties of Glycyrrhiza glabra extract samples. The highest yield of the Glycyrrhiza glabra extract (21.31 ± 0.64 wt.%) was produced using the Soxhlet extraction method with methanol. The highest concentrations of biologically active substances (3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, n-coumaric acid, luteolin-7-glucoside, acacetin, apigenin-7-O-glucoside, chicoric acid, and hesperetin) were found in these samples of Glycyrrhiza glabra extracts. When applying the maceration method using a mixture of solvents methanol-NaOH, rosmarinic acid was identified, and catechin was found in large quantities with a mixture of methanol-trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). Growth inhibition zones were determined for Escherichia coli (13.6 ± 0.41 mm), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (10.8 ± 0.32 mm), Bacillus subtilis (16.1 ± 0.48 mm), and Candida albicans (13.2 ± 0.39 mm) when exposed to samples of Glycyrrhiza glabra extracts obtained by the Soxhlet method with methanol. The antioxidant activity of Glycyrrhiza glabra extract samples obtained by the Soxhlet method was 117.62 ± 7.91 µmol Trolox equivalent/g, using the ABTS method (highest value), and 23.91 ± 1.12 µmol Trolox equivalent/g according to the FRAP method (smallest). The antioxidant activity of the extract samples according to the DPPH method was an intermediate value of 58.16 ± 3.90 µmol Trolox equivalent/g. Antibacterial and antioxidant activities are manifested by the polyphenolic compounds and flavonoids contained in the samples of the methanol extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra produced using the Soxhlet method. These Glycyrrhiza glabra extract samples have the potential to become a natural alternative to existing therapies for the elimination of bacterial infections or the prevention of premature aging caused by free radicals and oxidative stress in the human body.

Centella asiatica L., commonly known as Gotu kola, Indian pennywort, and Asiatic pennyworts, is an herbaceous perennial plant that belongs to the family Apiaceae and has long been used in the traditional medicine system. The plant is known to produce a wide range of active metabolites such as triterpenoids including asiatic acid, asiaticoside, brahmoside, and madecassic acid along with other constituents including centellose, centelloside, and madecassoside, etc., which show immense pharmacological activity. Due to its beneficial role in neuroprotection activity, the plant has been considered as a brain tonic. However, limited cultivation, poor seed viability with low germination rate, and overexploitation for decades have led to severe depletion and threatened its wild stocks. The present review aimed to provide up-to-date information on biotechnological tools applied to this endangered medicinal plant for its in vitro propagation, direct or indirect regeneration, synthetic seed production, strategies for secondary metabolite productions including different elicitors. In addition, a proposed mechanism for the biosynthesis of triterpenoids is also discussed.

Vischeria punctata is a unicellular microalga that has industrial potential, as it can produce substances with beneficial properties. Among them, endopolysaccharides (accumulated in cells) and exopolysaccharides (released by cells into the culture medium) are of particular interest. This study aimed to investigate the effect of nutrient medium composition on the growth of V. punctata biomass and the synthesis of polysaccharides by microalgae. The effect of modifying a standard nutrient medium and varying cultivation parameters (temperature, time, and extractant type) on the yield of exopolysaccharides produced by the microalgae V. punctate was investigated. The methods of spectrophotometry, ultrasonic extraction, and alcohol precipitation were used in the study. It was found that after 61 days of cultivation, the concentration of polysaccharides in the culture medium was statistically significantly higher (p V. punctata biomass when cultivated on different nutrient media did not differ significantly. The maximum biomass values on Prat and BBM 3N media were 1.101 mg/g d.w. and 1.120 mg/g d.w., respectively. Neutral sugars and uronic acids were found in the culture media. It follows on from the obtained data that the modified PratM medium was more efficient for extracting polysaccharides from V. punctata. The potential of microalgae as new sources of valuable chemicals (polysaccharides), which can be widely used in technologies for developing novel functional foods, biologically active food supplements, and pharmaceutical substances, was studied.

The aim of this article is to increase the nutritional value of soybean meal while reducing the content of antinutrients by microbial fermentation of soybean meal with a mixed culture of probiotic microorganisms (Bacillus subtilis, Aspergillus niger, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum) at two different hydromodules. The addition of microorganisms increased the content of easily digestible protein and amine nitrogen in fermented soybean meal (30:110 and 30:130, hydromodulus soybean meal:water) while decreasing urease activity (hydromodulus 30:110). The positive effect of microbial fermentation on the mineral composition of soybean meal was demonstrated. The ability of microorganisms in the fermentation process to increase the content of protein, essential amino acids, and macro- and microelements in soybean meal while decreasing anti-nutritional factors opens up possibilities for using this technology to advance animal husbandry.

Biologically active substances from microalgae can exhibit antioxidant, immunostimulating, antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, antihypertensive, regenerative, and neuroprotective effects. Lipid complexes of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Arthrospira platensis exhibit antibacterial activity and inhibit the growth of the Gram-positive strain Bacillus subtilis; the maximum zone of inhibition is 0.7 ± 0.03 cm at all concentrations. The carbohydrate-containing complex of C. vulgaris exhibits antibacterial activity, inhibits the growth of the Gram-positive strain B. subtilis, Bacillus pumilus; the maximum zone of inhibition is 3.5 ± 0.17 cm at all concentrations considered. The carbohydrate complex of A. platensis has antimicrobial activity against the Gram-negative strain of Escherichia coli at all concentrations, and the zone of inhibition is 2.0–3.0 cm. The presence of mythelenic, carbonyl groups, ester bonds between fatty acids and glycerol in lipid molecules, the stretching vibration of the phosphate group PO2, neutral lipids, glyco- and phospholipids, and unsaturated fatty acids, such as γ-linolenic, was revealed using FTIR spectra. Spectral peaks characteristic of saccharides were found, and there were cellulose and starch absorption bands, pyranose rings, and phenolic compounds. Both algae in this study had phenolic and alcohol components, which had high antibacterial activity. Microalgae can be used as biologically active food additives and/or as an alternative to antibiotic feed in animal husbandry due to their antibacterial properties.

The Baltic Sea algae species composition includes marine euryhaline, freshwater euryhaline, and true brackish water forms. This study aimed to isolate a lipid–pigment complex from microalgae of the Baltic Sea (Kaliningrad region) and investigate its antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Microalgae were sampled using a box-shaped bottom sampler. Sequencing was used for identification. Spectroscopy and chromatography with mass spectroscopy were used to study the properties of microalgae. Antibiotic activity was determined by the disc diffusion test. Lipids were extracted using the Folch method. Analysis of the results demonstrated the presence of antimicrobial activity of the lipid–pigment complex of microalgae against E. coli (the zone diameter was 17.0 ± 0.47 mm and 17.0 ± 0.21 mm in Chlorella vulgaris and Arthrospira platensis, respectively) and Bacillus pumilus (maximum inhibition diameter 16.0 ± 0.27 mm in C. vulgaris and 16.0 ± 0.22 mm in A. platensis). The cytotoxic and antioxidant activities of the lipid complexes of microalgae C. vulgaris and A. platensis were established and their physicochemical properties and fatty acid composition were studied. The results demonstrated that the lipid–pigment complex under experimental conditions was the most effective against P. pentosaceus among Gram-positive bacteria. Antimicrobial activity is directly related to the concentration of the lipid–pigment complex. The presence of antibacterial activity in microalgae lipid–pigment complexes opens the door to the development of alternative natural preparations for the prevention of microbial contamination of feed. Because of their biological activity, Baltic Sea microalgae can be used as an alternative to banned antibiotics in a variety of fields, including agriculture, medicine, cosmetology, and food preservation.

The demographic situation of the last few decades is characterized by the increased numbers of elderly and senile people, i.e., by the aging of the population. In humans, ageing is closely associated with the enhanced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), development of systemic inflammation and related vascular atherosclerotic alterations and metabolic disorders, like obesity, diabetes mellitus and neurodegenerative diseases. As these age-related alterations are directly associated with up-regulation of ROS production and development of chronic oxidative stress, their onset can be essentially delayed by continuous daily consumption of dietary antioxidants—natural products of plant origin. Such antioxidants (in the form of plant extracts, biologically active complexes or individual compounds) can be supplemented to functional foods, i.e., dietary supplementations for daily diet aiming prolongation of active life and delay of the senescence onset. Thereby, use of widely spread medicinal plants might essentially improve cost efficiency of this strategy and availability of antioxidant-rich functional foods. Therefore, here we addressed, to the best of our knowledge for the first time, the antioxidant activity of the extracts prepared from the aerial parts of Filipendula ulmaria and Alnus glutinosa growing in the Kaliningrad region of Russia, and assessed the contents of the biologically active substances underlying these properties. It was found that the extract prepared with the leaves of Filipendula ulmaria and female catkins of Alnus glutinosa demonstrated high antioxidant activity, although the former plant was featured with a higher antioxidant potential. The highest antioxidant activity detected in the methanol extracts of Alnus glutinosa reached 1094.02 ± 14.53 µmol TE/g, radical scavenging of activity was 584.45 ± 35.3 µmol TE/g, reducing capacity at interaction with iron complex—471.63 ± 7.06 µmol TE/g. For the methanol extracts of Filipendula ulmaria the antioxidant activity reached 759.78 ± 19.08 µmol TE/g, antioxidant activity for free radical removal was 451.08 ± 24.45 µmol TE/g and antioxidant activity for restorative ability with iron complex was 332.28 ± 10.93 µmol TE/g. These values are consistent with the total yields of the extracts and their content of ellagic acid. The ethyl acetate extracts of the both plants showed just minimal antioxidant activity. Thus, the considered extracts have an essential potential. This creates good prospects for the further use of herbal extracts of Filipendula ulmaria and Alnus glutinosa as a source of natural antioxidants.

Microalgae are rich in proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, pigments, enzymes, and other biologically active substances. This research aimed to study the composition and antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates of microalgae found in the Filinskaya Bay of the Kaliningrad region. The chemical composition of Scenedesmus intermedius and Scenedesmus obliquus microalgae biomass was studied. Ultrasound was used to isolate valuable components of microalgae. It was found that microalgae are rich in protein and contain lipids and reducing sugars. To confirm the accuracy of the determination, the protein content was measured using two methods (Kjeldahl and Bradford). Protein content in S. intermedius and S. obliquus microalgae samples did not differ significantly when measured using different methods. Protein extraction by the Kjeldahl method was found to be 63.27% for S. intermedius microalgae samples and 60.11% for S. obliquus microalgae samples. Protein content in S. intermedius samples was 63.46%, compared to 60.07% in S. obliquus samples, as determined by the Bradford method. Lipids were 8.0–8.2 times less abundant than protein in both types of microalgae samples. It was determined that the content of reducing sugars in the samples of the studied microalgae was 5.9 times less than the protein content. The presence of biological activity (antioxidant) in proteins and lipids obtained from biomass samples of the studied microscopic algae was established, which opens up some possibilities for their application in the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries (as enzymes, hormones, vitamins, growth substances, antibiotics, and other biologically active compounds).

Designing an economically viable catalyst that maintains high catalytic activity and stability is the key to unlock dry reforming of methane (DRM) as a primary strategy for biogas valorization. Ni/Al2O3 catalysts have been widely used for this purpose; however, several modifications have been reported in the last years in order to prevent coke deposition and deactivation of the samples. Modification of the acidity of the support and the addition of noble metal promoters are between the most reported strategies. Nevertheless, in the task of designing an active and stable catalyst for DRM, the selection of an appropriate noble metal promoter is turning more challenging owing to the lack of homogeneity of the different studies. Therefore, this research aims to compare Ru (0.50 and 2.0%) and Re (0.50 and 2.0%) as noble metal promoters for a Ni/MgAl2O4 catalyst under the same synthesis and reaction conditions. Catalysts were characterized by XRF, BET, XRD, TPR, hydrogen chemisorption (H2-TPD), and dry reforming reaction tests. Results show that both promoters increase Ni reducibility and dispersion. However, Ru seems a better promoter for DRM since 0.50% of Ru increases the catalytic activity in 10% and leads to less coke deposition.

During the cultivation and harvesting of fruit and vegetables, a large number of microorganisms accumulate on their surface. Their active and excessive reproduction leads to spoilage of products. The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of combining various packaging technologies with different biopreservatives on the stability of physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of fresh vegetables and fruit during storage. Samples of fruit and vegetable products (apples, tomatoes) were subjected to the following procedures: packaging without treatment, treatment with a mixture of bacteriocin-like substances and packaging with or without modified atmosphere. Packaged samples were stored in a refrigerator at a temperature of 4°C for 25 days. The bacteriocin-like substances in combination with modified atmosphere reduced the contamination of samples by pathogenic microorganisms at least 4 times while maintaining the quality characteristics of the fruit during the storage period. A biopreservative in combination with modified atmosphere can be used to control microbial spoilage and to keep fruit and vegetables fresh after harvest.

Abstract Background Purpose of study is revealing significant differences in serum proteomes in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (BD). Results Quantitative mass-spectrometry based proteomic analysis was used to quantify proteins in the blood serum samples after the depletion of six major blood proteins. Comparison of proteome profiles of different groups revealed 27 proteins being specific for schizophrenia, and 18 – for BD. Protein set in schizophrenia was mostly associated with immune response, cell communication, cell growth and maintenance, protein metabolism and regulation of nucleic acid metabolism. Protein set in BD was mostly associated with immune response, regulating transport processes across cell membrane and cell communication, development of neurons and oligodendrocytes and cell growth. Concentrations of ankyrin repeat domain-containing protein 12 (ANKRD12) and cadherin 5 in serum samples were determined by ELISA. Significant difference between three groups was revealed in ANKRD12 concentration (p = 0.02), with maximum elevation of ANKRD12 concentration (median level) in schizophrenia followed by BD. Cadherin 5 concentration differed significantly (p = 0.035) between schizophrenic patients with prevailing positive symptoms (4.78 [2.71, 7.12] ng/ml) and those with prevailing negative symptoms (1.86 [0.001, 4.11] ng/ml). Conclusions Our results are presumably useful for discovering the new pathways involved in endogenous psychotic disorders.

The management of public funds in municipalities, as the largest number of units among public sector enterprises, makes control of their activities an extremely important element of the management system. The article reviews the main normative acts regulating the financial and control activity in the municipalities. The aim of the article is to make a critical analysis of the regulatory framework regulating financial control and auditing in municipalities. The practical significance of the article is that on the basis of the critical analysis of the legal framework, there are opportunities for giving directions for improvement of the latter, in compliance with the adopted European Union regulations.

Miscanthus is a perennial wild plant that is vital for the production of paper and roofing, as well as horticulture and the development of new high-yielding crops in temperate climates. Chromosome-level assembly of the ancient tetraploid genome of miscanthus chromosomes is reported to provide resources that can link its chromosomes to related diploid sorghum and complex polyploid sugarcane. Analysis of Miscanthus sinensis and Miscanthus sacchariflorus showed intense mixing and interspecific hybridization and documented the origin of a high-yielding triploid bioenergetic plant, Miscanthus × giganteus. The Miscanthus genome expands comparative genomics functions to better understand the main abilities of Andropogoneae herbs. Miscanthus × giganteus is widely regarded as a promising lignocellulosic biomass crop due to its high-biomass yield, which does not emit toxic compounds into the environment, and ability to grow in depleted lands. The high production cost of lignocellulosic bioethanol limits its commercialization. The main components that inhibit the enzymatic reactions of fermentation and saccharification are lignin in the cell wall and its by-products released during the pre-treatment stage. One approach to overcoming this barrier could be to genetically modify the genes involved in lignin biosynthesis, manipulating the lignin content and composition of miscanthus.

Methods for purifying, detecting, and characterizing protein concentrate, carbohydrates, lipids, and neutral fats from the microalgae were developed as a result of research. Microalgae were collected from natural sources (water, sand, soil of the Kaliningrad region, Russia). Microalgae were identified based on morphology and polymerase chain reaction as Chlorella vulgaris Beijer, Arthrospira platensis Gomont, Arthrospira platensis (Nordst.) Geitl., and Dunaliella salina Teod. The protein content in all microalgae samples was determined using a spectrophotometer. The extracts were dried by spray freeze drying. Pressure acid hydrolysis with 1% sulfuric acid was determined to be the most effective method for extracting carbohydrates from microalgae biomass samples. The highest yield of carbohydrates (more than 56%) was obtained from A. platensis samples. The addition of carbohydrates to the cultivation medium increased the accumulation of fatty acids in microalgae, especially in Chlorella. When carbohydrates were introduced to nutrient media, neutral lipids increased by 10.9%, triacylglycerides by 10.9%, fatty acids by 13.9%, polar lipids by 3.1%, unsaponifiable substances by 13.1%, chlorophyllides by 12.1%, other impurities by 8.9% on average for all microalgae. It was demonstrated that on average the content of myristic acid increased by 10.8%, palmitic acid by 10.4%, oleic acid by 10.0%, stearic acid by 10.1%, and linoleic acid by 5.7% in all microalgae samples with the addition of carbohydrates to nutrient media. It was established that microalgae samples contained valuable components (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, fatty acids, minerals). Thereby the study of the composition of lipids and fatty acids in microalgae, as well as the influence of carbohydrates in the nutrient medium on lipid accumulation, is a promising direction for scientific research in the fields of physiology, biochemistry, biophysics, genetics, space biology and feed additive production.

The prohibition of antibiotics has led to extensive research and use of phytogenic feed additives. James Barrie Kirkpatrick described four subspecies of eucalyptus (family Myrtaceae), including Eucalýptus globulus, in 1974. The maximum concentrations of quercetin-3D-glycoside (1703.30 g/mL), astragalin (1737.82 g/mL), chlorogenic acid (342.14 g/mL), catechin (282.54 g/mL), rosmarinic acid (36.39 g/mL), and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (27.55 g/mL) were found in samples of ultrasonic extraction with ethyl alcohol (extraction module 1:5, temperature of 32 °C, an ultrasonic exposure time of 25 min). Antimicrobial activity was observed in all studied samples after 12 h of incubation (against gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis) and gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria, as well as representatives of yeast fungi (Candida albicans)); a more pronounced antimicrobial effect (lysis zone) was observed after ultrasonic processing of extracts for 20 and 25 min. Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans had lysis areas of 10.0 mm (20 min extraction with ultrasonic treatment), 13.0 mm (20 min extraction without ultrasonic treatment), and 15.5 mm (25 min extraction with ultrasonic treatment), respectively. E. globulus was demonstrated to be a source of biologically active phenolic compounds with antibacterial and fungicidal activity. More research on the use of E. globulus in feed additives is required.

ABSTRACT Successful treatment of HIV-infected patients with combinational antiretroviral therapies (cART) can now prolong patients’ lives to nearly normal life spans. However, the new challenge faced by many of those HIV-infected patients is chronic neuroinflammation and neurotoxicity that often leads to HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). However, the mechanism of neuropathogenesis underlying HAND, especially in those who are under cART, is not well understood. HAND is typically characterized by HIV-mediated glial neuroinflammation and neurotoxicity. However, the severity of HAND does not always correlate with HIV-1 viral load but, rather, with the extent of glial activation, suggesting that other HIV-associated factors might contribute to HAND. HIV-1 viral protein R (Vpr) could be one of those viral factors because of its association with neuroinflammation and neurotoxicity. The objective of this study was to delineate the specific roles of HIV-1 infection and Vpr in the activation of neuroinflammation and neurotoxicity, and the possible relationships with the Sur1-Trpm4 channel that contributes to neuroinflammation and neuronal death. Here, we show that HIV-1 expression correlates with activation of proinflammatory markers (TLR4, TNF-α, and NF-κB) and the Sur1-Trpm4 channel in astrocytes of HIV-infected postmortem human and transgenic Tg26 mouse brain tissues. We further show that Vpr alone activates the same set of proinflammatory markers and Sur1 in a glioblastoma SNB19 cell line that is accompanied by apoptosis. The Sur1 inhibitor glibenclamide significantly reduced Vpr-induced apoptosis. Together, our data suggest that HIV-1 Vpr-induced proinflammatory response and apoptosis are mediated at least in part through the Sur1-Trpm4 channel in astrocytes. IMPORTANCE Effective antiretroviral therapies can now prolong patients’ lives to nearly normal life span. The current challenge faced by many HIV-infected patients is chronic neuroinflammation and neurotoxicity that contributes to HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). We show here that the expression of HIV-1 infection and Vpr correlates with the activation of proinflammatory markers (Toll-like receptor 4 [TLR4], tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNF-α], and NF-κB) and the sulfonylurea receptor 1 (Sur1)-transient receptor potential melastatin 4 (Trpm4) channel in astrocytes of brain tissues. We further show that an FDA-approved Sur1 inhibitory drug called glibenclamide significantly ameliorates apoptotic astrocytic cell death caused by HIV-1 Vpr, which could potentially open the possibility of repurposing glibenclamide for treating HAND.

The technical feasibility of the recycling of specific polymeric composite materials was evaluated. Two types of carbon composites, both with phenol-formaldehyde resin but with different reinforcement, were studied. It was discovered that the solvolysis with the oxidizing agents used in an acidic environment allowed for the achievement of a high-efficiency fiber extraction. The extracted secondary carbon fibers had a high degree of purity (95–99.5% of resin was removed). Fiber thickness slightly decreased during the process (on average, by 20%). The use of chopped secondary fibers (3–9 mm fiber length) for concrete reinforcement produced a positive effect. Hence, the compressive and bending strength of the concrete blocks were accordingly 1.5% and 16% higher in comparison with the control sample. The use of secondary carbon fabric for the production of composite materials a good result: the effective tensile strength of CFRP samples reinforced with recovered fabric is only lower by 4.5% in comparison with virgin fabric.

The excess biomass of drifting algae and their casting to the Baltic Sea coast imposes a significant environmental burden. The analysis of beach-cast algae showed that the dominant species are macroalgae Ulva sp., Furcellaria lumbricalis, Cladophora sp., and Polysiphonia fucoides. The biomass of Furcellaria and Polysiphonia algae, containing 25.6% and 19.98% sugars, respectively, has the greatest resource potential in terms of obtaining carbohydrates. Fucose, glucose, and galactose were found to be the most common carbohydrates. The lipid content did not exceed 4.3% (2.3–4.3%), while the fatty acid composition was represented by saturated fatty acids (palmitic, stearic, methyloleic, behenic, etc.). The highest content of crude protein was found in samples of macroalgae of the genus Polysiphonia and amounted to 28.2%. A study of the elemental composition of drifting algae revealed that they have a high carbon content (31.3–37.5%) and a low hydrogen (4.96–5.82%), and sulfur (1.75–3.00%) content. Red algal biomass has the most resource potential in terms of biofuel generation, as it has a high number of lipids and proteins that can produce melanoidins during hydrothermal liquefaction, enhancing the fuel yield. The study noted the feasibility of using the biomass of the studied algae taxa to produce polysaccharides and biofuels. The analyses of antioxidant properties, fat content, and fat composition do not provide convincing evidence of the viability of using the aforementioned macroalgae for their production.
