2. Tuning the magneto-electrical properties of multiferroic multilayers through interface strain and disorder

Abstract

Artificially engineered superlattices were designed and fabricated to induce different growth mechanisms and structural characteristics. DC sputtering was used to grow ferromagnetic (La$_{0.8}$Ba$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$) / ferroelectric (Ba$_{0.25}$Sr$_{0.75}$TiO$_3$ or BaTiO$_3$) superlattices. We systematically modified the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer to analyze dimensional and structural effects on the superlattices with different structural characteristics. The crystalline structure was characterized by X-Ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The magnetic and electronic properties were investigated by SQUID magnetometry and resistance measurements. The results show that both strain and structural disorder can significantly affect the physical properties of the systems. Compressive strain tends to increase the competition between the magnetic interactions decreasing the ferromagnetism of the samples and the localization of the charge carrier through the electron-phonon interaction. Tensile strain reduces the charge carrier localization, increasing the ferromagnetic transition temperature. Structural defects have a stronger influence on the magnetic properties than on the transport properties, reducing the ferromagnetic transition temperature while increasing the magnetic hardness of the superlattices. Abstract

Beamline I22 at Diamond Light Source is dedicated to the study of soft matter systems from both biological and materials science. The beamline can operate in the range 3.7 keV to 22 keV for transmission SAXS and 14 keV to 20 keV for microfocus SAXS with beamsizes 240 x 60 {\mu}m$^{2}$ spot [Full width half maximum (FWHM) Horizontal (H) x Vertical (V)] at sample for the main beamline, and approximately 10 x 10 {\mu}m$^{2}$ for the dedicated microfocussing platform. There is a versatile sample platform for accommodating a range of facility, and user developed, sample environments. The high brilliance of the insertion device source on I22 allows structural investigation of materials under extreme environments (for example fluid flow at high pressures and temperatures). I22 provides reliable access to millisecond timescales, essential to understanding kinetic processes such as early folding events in proteins or structural evolution in polymers and colloids., Comment: Preprint. 27 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Antarctica's ice shelves modulate the grounded ice flow, and weakening of ice shelves due to climate forcing will decrease their 'buttressing' effect, causing a response in the grounded ice. While the processes governing ice-shelf weakening are complex, uncertainties in the response of the grounded ice sheet are also difficult to assess. The Antarctic BUttressing Model Intercomparison Project (ABUMIP) compares ice-sheet model responses to decrease in buttressing by investigating the 'end-member' scenario of total and sustained loss of ice shelves. Although unrealistic, this scenario enables gauging the sensitivity of an ensemble of 15 ice-sheet models to a total loss of buttressing, hence exhibiting the full potential of marine ice-sheet instability. All models predict that this scenario leads to multi-metre (1-12 m) sea-level rise over 500 years from present day. West Antarctic ice sheet collapse alone leads to a 1.91-5.08 m sea-level rise due to the marine ice-sheet instability. Mass loss rates are a strong function of the sliding/friction law, with plastic laws cause a further destabilization of the Aurora and Wilkes Subglacial Basins, East Antarctica. Improvements to marine ice-sheet models have greatly reduced variability between modelled ice-sheet responses to extreme ice-shelf loss, e.g. compared to the SeaRISE assessments.

Abstract

The sea level contribution of the Antarctic ice sheet constitutes a large uncertainty in future sea level projections. Here we apply a linear response theory approach to 16 state-of-the-art ice sheet models to estimate the Antarctic ice sheet contribution from basal ice shelf melting within the 21st century. The purpose of this computation is to estimate the uncertainty of Antarctica's future contribution to global sea level rise that arises from large uncertainty in the oceanic forcing and the associated ice shelf melting. Ice shelf melting is considered to be a major if not the largest perturbation of the ice sheet's flow into the ocean. However, by computing only the sea level contribution in response to ice shelf melting, our study is neglecting a number of processes such as surface-mass-balance-related contributions. In assuming linear response theory, we are able to capture complex temporal responses of the ice sheets, but we neglect any self-dampening or self-amplifying processes. This is particularly relevant in situations in which an instability is dominating the ice loss. The results obtained here are thus relevant, in particular wherever the ice loss is dominated by the forcing as opposed to an internal instability, for example in strong ocean warming scenarios. In order to allow for comparison the methodology was chosen to be exactly the same as in an earlier study (Levermann et al., 2014) but with 16 instead of 5 ice sheet models. We include uncertainty in the atmospheric warming response to carbon emissions (full range of CMIP5 climate model sensitivities), uncertainty in the oceanic transport to the Southern Ocean (obtained from the time-delayed and scaled oceanic subsurface warming in CMIP5 models in relation to the global mean surface warming), and the observed range of responses of basal ice shelf melting to oceanic warming outside the ice shelf cavity. This uncertainty in basal ice shelf melting is then convoluted with the linear response functions of each of the 16 ice sheet models to obtain the ice flow response to the individual global warming path. The model median for the observational period from 1992 to 2017 of the ice loss due to basal ice shelf melting is 10.2 mm, with a likely range between 5.2 and 21.3 mm. For the same period the Antarctic ice sheet lost mass equivalent to 7.4mm of global sea level rise, with a standard deviation of 3.7mm (Shepherd et al., 2018) including all processes, especially surface-mass-balance changes. For the unabated warming path, Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5), we obtain a median contribution of the Antarctic ice sheet to global mean sea level rise from basal ice shelf melting within the 21st century of 17 cm, with a likely range (66th percentile around the mean) between 9 and 36 cm and a very likely range (90th percentile around the mean) between 6 and 58 cm. For the RCP2.6 warming path, which will keep the global mean temperature below 2 °C of global warming and is thus consistent with the Paris Climate Agreement, the procedure yields a median of 13 cm of global mean sea level contribution. The likely range for the RCP2.6 scenario is between 7 and 24 cm, and the very likely range is between 4 and 37 cm. The structural uncertainties in the method do not allow for an interpretation of any higher uncertainty percentiles.We provide projections for the five Antarctic regions and for each model and each scenario separately. The rate of sea level contribution is highest under the RCP8.5 scenario. The maximum within the 21st century of the median value is 4 cm per decade, with a likely range between 2 and 9 cm per decade and a very likely range between 1 and 14 cm per decade.

Abstract

We observe strong softening of optical phonon modes in superconducting (Tc = 4.2 K) boron doped diamond near the Brillouin zone center using inelastic x-ray scattering from a CVD-grown highly oriented sample. The magnitude of the softening, and our observation that it becomes stronger approaching zone center, supports theoretical models suggesting a phonon-mediated pairing mechanism via coupling of optical phonon modes to Fermi surfaces around the zone center. Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is recommended to treat end-stage COPD. We hypothesized that changing breathing pattern of COPD patients on NIV could identify patients with severe AECOPD prior to admission. Methods: This is a prospective monocentric study including all patients with COPD treated with long-term home NIV. Patients were divided in two groups: a stable group in which patients were admitted for the usual respiratory review and an exacerbation group in which patients were admitted for inpatient care of severe AECOPD. Data from the ventilator were downloaded and analyzed over the course of the 10 days that preceded the admission. Results: A total of 62 patients were included: 41 (67%) in the stable group and 21 (33%) in the exacerbation group. Respiratory rate was higher in the exacerbation group than in the stable group over the 10 days preceding inclusion (18.2±0.5 vs 16.3±0.5 breaths/min, respectively) (P=0.034). For 2 consecutive days, a respiratory rate outside the interquartile limit of the respiratory rate calculated over the 4 preceding days was associated with an increased risk of severe AECOPD of 2.8 (95% CI: 1.4–5.5) (P1.0845 was associated with an increased risk of severe AECOPD of 4.0 (95% CI: 1.5–10.5) (P=0.001). This assessment had the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive, and negative predictive values of 81.0, 63.4, 53.1, and 86.7%, respectively. Abstract

ABSTRACTDespite the low prevalence of each rare disease, the total burden is high. Patients with rare diseases encounter numerous barriers, including delayed diagnosis and limited access to high-quality treatments. In order to tackle these challenges, the European Commission launched the European Reference Networks (ERNs), cross-border networks of healthcare providers and patients representatives. In parallel, the aims and structure of these ERNs were translated at the federal and regional levels, resulting in the creation of the Flemish Network of Rare Diseases. In line with the mission of the ERNs and to ensure equal access to care, we describe as first patient pathways for systemic sclerosis (SSc), as a pilot model for other rare connective and musculoskeletal diseases. Consensus was reached on following key messages: 1. Patients with SSc should have multidisciplinary clinical and investigational evaluations in a tertiary reference expert centre at baseline, and subsequently every three to 5 years. Intermediately, a yearly clinical evaluation should be provided in the reference centre, whilst SSc technical evaluations are permissionably executed in a centre that follows SSc-specific clinical practice guidelines. In between, monitoring can take place in secondary care units, under the condition that qualitative examinations and care including interactive multidisciplinary consultations can be provided. 2. Patients with early diffuse cutaneous SSc, (progressive) interstitial lung disease and/or pulmonary arterial hypertension should undergo regular evaluations in specialised tertiary care reference institutions. 3. Monitoring of patients with progressive interstitial lung disease and/or pulmonary (arterial) hypertension will be done in agreement with experts of ERN LUNG.

It is important to evaluate whether a new treatment for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) provides additive benefit to background foundational treatments. As such, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of empagliflozin in patients with HFrEF in addition to baseline treatment with specific doses and combinations of disease-modifying therapies.

Abstract

International audience; Syntheses and magnetic behavior of bis(trimethylsilyl)amido tricyclopentylphosphane complexes [MN(SiMe3)22(PCyp3)] of manganese(II), iron(II), and cobalt(II) are described. Crystal structures for this series of rare phosphane adducts of homoleptic bis(trimethylsilyl)amide complexes have been solved. The Fe and Co derivatives have been found to possess large magnetic anisotropy, with zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters, D, of –38 and –57 cm–1, respectively. Both compounds exhibit slow relaxation of their magnetization in an applied field.

Abstract

International audience; Three azide based compounds were synthesized employing aliphatic amines as site blocking agents: [Ni(N3)(C6H16N2)2]ClO4 (I) [C6H16N2 = N,N′-diethylethylenediamine (DEDA)], [Cu8(N3)16(C6H18N4)2] (II) [C6H18N4 = tris(2-aminoethyl) amine (TREN)], and [Cu7(N3)14(C7H19N3)2]·2H2O (III) [C7H19N3 = 3,3′-diamino-N-methyldipropylamine (DMDA)]. The compounds I and II have one-dimensional structure and III has a two-dimensional structure. Compound I is a simple linear cationic Ni–azide chain and compound II has Cu6 azide units forming a column terminated by the copper-metalloligand generated in-situ during the course of the reaction. The charge compensation perchlorate anions occupy spaces in between the chains in I. Compound II packs in a herringbone arrangement, which is not commonly observed in low-dimensional structures. Compound III has one-dimensional copper-azide chains connected through copper-metalloligand forming the two-dimensional structure. All the three compounds exhibit anti-ferromagnetic behavior.

28. Transient Variability of the Miocene Antarctic Ice Sheet Smaller Than Equilibrium Differences

Abstract

During the early to mid‐Miocene, benthic δ18O records indicate large ice volume fluctuations of the Antarctic ice sheet (AIS) on multiple timescales. Hitherto, research has mainly focused on how CO2and insolation changes control an equilibrated AIS. However, transient AIS dynamics remain largely unexplored. Here, we study Miocene AIS variability, using an ice sheet‐shelf model forced by climate model output with various CO2levels and orbital conditions. Besides equilibrium simulations, we conduct transient experiments, gradually changing the forcing climate state over time. We show that transient AIS variability is substantially smaller than equilibrium differences. This reduces the contribution of the AIS to δ18O fluctuations by more than two thirds on a 40‐kyr timescale, hence requiring a larger contribution by deep‐sea‐temperature variability. The growth rates are much slower than the decay rates, which ensures variability around a preferred small state. Finally, if the bedrock topography enlarges the West Antarctic land surface, AIS self‐sustenance increases. Abstract

We report a design for a Kirkpatrick-Baez (KB) microfocussing mirror system. The main components are described, with emphasis on a 'tripod' manipulator, where we outline the required coordinate transformation calculations. The merit of this device lies in its simplicity of design, minimal degrees of freedom, and speed and ease of setup on a beamline. Test results and an example of the mirrors in use on Diamond Beamline I16, showing a high-resolution polar domain map of KTiOPO4 with a spot size of 1.25 μm x 1.5 μm, are presented. Abstract

Inelastic nuclear resonant scattering spectra of Fe-57 atoms were measured on crystalline alloys of Pt3Fe-57 that were chemically disordered, partially ordered, and L1(2) ordered. Phonon partial density of states curves for Fe-57 were obtained from these spectra. Upon disordering, about 10% of the spectral intensity underwent a distinct shift from 25 to 19 meV. This change in optical modes accounted for most of the change of the vibrational entropy of disordering contributed by Fe atoms, which was (+0.10 +/- 0.03) k(B) (Fe atom)(-1). Prospects for parametrizing the vibrational entropy with low-order cluster variables were assessed. To calculate the difference in vibrational entropy of the disordered and ordered alloys, the clusters must be large enough to account for the abundances of several of the atom configurations of the first-nearest-neighbor shell about the Fe-57 atoms.

Abstract

We have measured, by x-ray backscattering, the lattice constant of four highly enriched Ge isotopes: A=70, 73, 74, and 76 at temperatures ranging from 8 to 300 K. Comparing with Ge-70, values of Deltaa/a ranged from -10 to -46 p.p.m. A good quantitative agreement over the whole temperature range (8-300 K) was found with values calculated from a theory that takes into account the zero point motion and the anharmonicity of the lattice.

Abstract

The reaction of terminal alkenylarenes having either o-(dimethylamino) or 0-[(d imethylamino)methyl] substituents with PdC12(MeCN)2 in MeOH in the presence of NaOAc and PPh3 has been studied. This reaction affords allylic phosphonium compounds for those substrates having more than six carbon atoms between the alkene function and the tertiary amine nitrogen atom. In those cases where the alkene is closer to the NMe2 unit, this reaction leads, via allylic metalation, to intramolecular cyclization that involves generation of a new C-N bond and results in the formation of cationic 5-,6-, or 7-membered heterocyclic ammonium compounds. For example, C~H~(CHZCH=CH~)- l-(CHMeNMe2)-2 can be converted to the endo-cyclization product [CsH@H=CHCH2NMe2CH(Me))-l,2]Cl in 86% yield with this Pd(I1)-based system. The cyclization reaction is highly selective and occurs either at the terminal, less substituted olefinic carbon atom (Cy)a,f fording endo-cyclization, or at the allylic C, carbon atom, resulting in the formation of exo-cyclic products. The cyclization reaction is thought to proceed via a palladium-assisted C-H activation route: in most cases it was possible to isolate and characterize an ~$allylpalladium complex as a key intermediate and then allow it to react further with PPh3 to afford a cyclized end product. The X-ray crystal structures of a palladium-allyl complex, i.e., 2i,,, and a quinolinium derivative, 3a, aredescribed. Crystal data for 2iS,,,: monoclinic, space group P2,/c, with a = 8.902(1), b = 20.587(1), and c = 9.702(1) A, /3 = 95.52(1)', Z = 4, R = 0.038. Crystal data for 3a: monoclinic, space group P21/n with a = 13.032(1), b = 6.544(1), and c = 13.415(1) A, fi = 114.72(1)O, Z = 4, R = 0.042.
