The initiation of ductile fracture in grade DH36 shipbuilding steel was modeled using the Hosford-Coulomb fracture model. The hardening and ductile fracture characteristics of DH36 were assessed by performing experiments on notched tension, central hole tension, plane strain tension and shear specimens. Detailed finite element analysis of each experiment was performed to evaluate the evolution of local stress and strain fields. The loading paths to ductile fracture initiation were determined in terms of the stress triaxiality and Lode angle parameter histories extracted from finite element analyses with very fine solid element meshes. The Hosford-Coulomb fracture model parameters were identified using the extracted loading paths and adopting a linear damage accumulation law. It has been found that ductile fracture behavior of DH36 is dependent not only on the stress triaxiality but also the Lode angle.

It is important to obtain reasonable predictions of the extent of the damage during maritime accidents such as ship collisions and groundings. Many fracture models based on different mechanical backgrounds have been proposed and can be used to estimate the extent of damage involving ductile fracture. The goal of this study was to compare the damage extents provided by some selected fracture models. Instead of performing a new series of material constant calibration tests, the fracture test results for the ship building steel EH36 obtained by Park et al. (2019) were used which included specimens with different geometries such as central hole, pure shear, and notched tensile specimens. The test results were compared with seven ductile fracture surfaces: Johnson-Cook, Cockcroft-Latham-Oh, Bai-Wierzbicki, Modified Mohr-Coulomb, Lou-Huh, Maximum shear stress, and Hosford-Coulomb. The linear damage accumulation law was applied to consider the effect of the loading path on each fracture surface. The Swift-Voce combined constitutive model was used to accurately define the flow stress in a large strain region. The reliability of these simulations was verified by the good agreement between the axial tension force elongation relations captured from the tests and simulations without fracture assignment. The material constants corresponding to each fracture surface were calibrated using an optimization technique with the minimized object function of the residual sum of errors between the simulated and predicted stress triaxiality and load angle parameter values to fracture initiation. The reliabilities of the calibrated material constants of B-W, MMC, L-H, and HC were the best, whereas there was a high residual sum of errors in the case of the MMS, C-L-O, and J-C models. The most accurate fracture predictions for the fracture specimens were made by the B-W, MMC, L-H, and HC models.

The predictive capabilities of the Hosford-Coulomb ductile fracture model for shell elements were evaluated by simulating the penetration of stiffened panel test models. The plasticity and ductile fracture of the test model material, S235JR grade steel, were modeled using the results of tests reported in the literature, which consisted of dog bone, notched tension, central hole tension, and shear experiments. The loading paths to ductile fracture initiation were extracted from finite element analyses with very fine solid element meshes. The Hosford-Coulomb fracture model parameters were identified using the extracted loading paths and adopting a linear damage accumulation law. Using the concept of the Domain of Shell-to-Solid Equivalence, the calibrated fracture model was extended to shell finite elements. Subsequently, the fracture model was used to simulate the stiffened panel penetration tests. The calibrated fracture model provides an accurate estimation of ductile fracture initiation and ductile crack propagation while being relatively mesh-insensitive for the particular problem considered.

As large-scale scientific facilities develop, the klystron efficiency becomes an important issue to reduce high operating costs. We are developing high-efficiency klystrons for the Pohang Light Source-II (PLS-II) and the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL) at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL). The newly developed klystrons should have the same specifications, including perveance and overall length, to replace existing ones. Under these limited conditions, we designed the klystrons based on a multi-cell output cavity to improve the power-conversion efficiency significatly. We simulated the beam-dynamics using the Field Charge Interaction (FCI) code with a MATLAB script to find the optimum design parameters for high efficiency. We have determined the design parameters, such as cell tuning frequencies, inter-cell distances, couplings between cells and the Qe of the last cell, of the multi-cell output cavity.

When the thermionic electron gun of the klystron operates, the structure around the cathode is subjected to thermal deformation due to the high operating temperature of the cathode. A thermal deformation analysis of the existing electron gun with ‘cold’ dimensions (dimension on fabrication) was done using the ANSYS code to get the ‘hot’ dimensions of the electron gun on operation. After that, the optics of the emitted electron beam were simulated using two codes (EGUN and CST-PS) for the two cases of the ‘cold’ dimension and the ‘hot’ dimension. We compared the beam trajectories of the above two cases to investigate the change in the physical quantities, which would have a strong effect on the klystron performance due to the thermal deformation. The thermal deformation was found to cause a perveance change as large as 15%. The scalloping behavior was also investigated with an applied magnetic field for the two cases of cold and hot dimensions.

The hard X-ray free-electron laser at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL-XFEL) in the Republic of Korea achieved saturation of a 0.144 nm free-electron laser beam on 27 November 2016, making it the third hard X-ray free-electron laser in the world, following the demonstrations of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and the SPring-8 Angstrom Compact Free Electron Laser (SACLA). The use of electron-beam-based alignment incorporating undulator radiation spectrum analysis has allowed reliable operation of PAL-XFEL with unprecedented temporal stability and dispersion-free orbits. In particular, a timing jitter of just 20 fs for the free-electron laser photon beam is consistently achieved due to the use of a state-of-the-art design of the electron linear accelerator and electron-beam-based alignment. The low timing jitter of the electron beam makes it possible to observe Bi(111) phonon dynamics without the need for timing-jitter correction, indicating that PAL-XFEL will be an extremely useful tool for hard X-ray time-resolved experiments. The Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL) in South Korea has now entered operation with a timing jitter of just 20 fs.

In order to suppress beam losses and radiations in high-power klystrons, the electron beam should be desinged to have the scalloping (i.e., the radial oscillation of beam envelope) as small as possible. This is done by matching the focusing field profile with beam trajectories (which are usually convergent). In this article, we report on the beam-matching simulations using a newly developed matching procedure with various beam radii and design solenoid magnets of S-band klystrons at Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL).

An electron accelerator system has been developed for use in industrial, as well as possible medical, applications. Based on our experiences achieved during prototype system development and various electron beam acceleration tests, we have built a stable and compact system for sales purposes. We have integrated a self-developed accelerating cavity, an E-gun pulse driver, a radio-frequency (RF) power system, a vacuum system, a cooling system, etc. into a frame with a size of 1800 × 1000 × 1500 mm3. The accelerating structure is a side-coupled standing-wave type operating in the π/2 mode (tuned to~3 GHz). The RF power is provided by using a magnetron driven by a solid-state modulator. The electron gun is a triode type with a dispenser cathode (diameter of 11 mm). The system is capable of delivering a maximum 900-W average electron beam power with tight focusing at the target. Until now, we have performed various electron beam tests and X-ray beam tests after having built the system, have completed the beam assessment for commercializations, and have been preparing full-fledged sales activity. This article reports on our system development processes and on some of our early test results for commercializations.

In this paper, we propose vehicle SoC fault diagnosis platform using FlexRay protocol in order to detect the faults of semiconductor control chip even after vehicle production. Before FlexRay protocol by sending NFI (Null Frame Indicator) bit among the header segment and a specific identifier in the payload segment of FlexRay frame, this technique can be distinguishable from normal mode and test mode. By using this technique, it is possible to detect the faults such as performance degradation of vehicle network system caused by the aging or several problems of vehicle semiconductor chip. Also high reliability and safety of vehicle can be maintained by using structural test for vehicle SoC fault detection.

The stress triaxiality and lode angle are known to be most dominant fracture parameters in ductile materials. This paper proposes a three-dimensional failure strain surface for a ductile steel, called a low-temperature high-tensile steel (EH36), using average stress triaxiality and average normalized lode parameter, along with briefly introducing their theoretical background. It is an extension of previous works by Choung et al. (2011; 2012; 2014a; 2014b) and Choung and Nam (2013), in which a two-dimensional failure strain locus was presented. A series of tests for specially designed specimens that were expected to fail in the shear mode, shear-tension mode, and compression mode was conducted to develop a three-dimensional fracture surface covering wide ranges for the two parameters. This paper discusses the test procedures for three different tests in detail. The tensile force versus stroke data are presented as the results of these tests and will be used for the verification of numerical simulations and fracture identifications in Part II.

An extended study was conducted on the fracture criterion by Choung et al. (2011; 2012) and Choung and Nam (2013), and the results are presented in two parts. The theoretical background of the fracture and the results of new experimental studies were reported in Part I, and three-dimensional fracture surface formulations and verifications are reported in Part II. How the corrected true stress can be processed from the extrapolated true stress is first introduced. Numerical simulations using the corrected true stress were conducted for pure shear, shear-tension, and pure compression tests. The numerical results perfectly coincided with test results, except for the pure shear simulations, where volume locking appeared to prevent a load reduction. The average stress triaxialities, average normalized lode parameters, and equivalent plastic strain at fracture initiation were extracted from numerical simulations to formulate a new three-dimensional fracture strain surface. A series of extra tests with asymmetric notch specimens was performed to check the validity of the newly developed fracture strain surface. Then, a new user-subroutine was developed to calculate and transfer the two fracture parameters to commercial finite element code. Simulation results based on the user-subroutine were in good agreement with the test results.

This study explores the use of localized necking for failure modeling in maritime crash analysis, using large shell elements. The assumption that the failure of a large shell element occurs simultaneously with the onset of localized necking is revisited. This study particularly investigates the numerical implementation of the localized necking condition and its implications on the results of ship collision analysis involving not only plate rupture but also various failure mechanisms such as the crushing and tearing of web girders, stringers, and their intersections. Through a series of large-scale collision simulations, the effects of bending deformation on the initiation of necking, non-proportional loading paths, and ductile fractures not preceded by localized necking, are investigated. It is demonstrated that a localized necking-based fracture model provides a reasonable, relatively mesh-insensitive estimate of the onset of fracture in the outer hull panels; however, fracture propagation is very sensitive to the numerical implementation of the necking and fracture model, especially for the cases involving the crushing of web frames and stringers.

A Hosford-Coulomb type ductile fracture surface was developed for DH36 grade steels. The fracture experiments reported in the literature, which consist of tests with notched tensile specimens, tensile specimens with a central hole, shear specimen and disc specimens for punch specimens, were utilized in a detailed finite element analysis of each experiment to evaluate the evolution of local stress and strain fields and identify plasticity and fracture response of DH36. The developed plasticity model consists of a von Mises yield surface, an associated flow rule and a combined Swift-Voce type isotropic hardening rule. The loading paths to fracture initiation were determined in terms of stress triaxiality and normalized Lode angle parameter histories. Finally, the Hosford-Coulomb fracture surface was calibrated using the finite element analysis results and adapting a linear damage accumulation law.

To verify the function of vehicle is becoming more and more difficult because many electronic control units have been embedded in vehicle with development of electronics industry. The reliability of vehicle should be considered above all important because malfunction of vehicle can cause damage of human life. In this paper, defect diagnosis platform based on CAN network is proposed to improve the reliability of vehicle. Reliability of vehicle is significantly increased by adopting the structural test via dedicated test path after manufacturing. Besides, the test cost is reduced because additional test pins are not required.

Network-on-chip (NoC) has evolved to overcome the issues of traditional bus-based on-chip interconnect. In NoC-reuse as TAM, the test schedulers are constrained with the topological position of cores and test access points, which may negatively affect the test time. This paper presents a scalable hybrid test data transportation scheme that allows to simultaneously test multiple heterogeneous cores of NoC-based SoCs, while reusing NoC as TAM. In the proposed test scheme, single test stimuli set of multiple CUTs is embedded into each flit of the test stimuli packets and those packets are multicast to the targeted CUTs. However, the test response packets of each CUT are unicast towards the tester. To reduce network load, a flit is filled with maximum possible test response sets before unicasting towards the tester. With the aid of Verilog and analytical simulations, the proposed scheme is proved effective and the results are compared with some recent techniques.

Today’s System-on-a-Chip (SoC) is designed with reusable IP cores to meet short time-tomarket requirements. However, the increasing cost of testing becomes a big burden in manufacturing a highly integrated SoC. In this paper, an efficient parallel scan test technique is introduced to minimize the test application time. Multiple scan enable signals are adopted to implement scan architecture to achieve optimal test application time for the test patterns scheduled for concurrent scan test. Experimental results show that testing times are considerably reduced with little area overhead.

Test cost reduction is necessary to test a complex System-on-a-Chip(SoC) which adopts various Intellectual Properties (IP). In this paper, test architecture with low pin count which is able to IP-based SoC test, using IEEE Std. 1149.7 and IEEE Std. 1500, is proposed. IEEE Std. 1500 provides independent access mechanism for each IP in IP-based SoC test. In this paper, just two test pins are required by composing that these independent access mechanism can be controlled by IEEE Std. 1149.7. The number of Chips which are tested at the same time is increased by reducing required test pin count at wafer and package level test, and consequently the overall manufacturing test cost will be reduced significantly.

Electron RF linacs for X-ray imaging applications require a small beam radius to achieve fine spatial resolution. By adopting transverse RF focusing in an accelerator, one can achieve a compact system without external magnets. A small beam radius can be obtained by transverse RF focusing with a high accelerating gradient, but the beam energy is usually limited by the available power of RF sources. In contrast, RF phase focusing (transverse RF focusing which depends on the beam phase) is enhanced by modifying the accelerating structure. Since RF phase focusing is effective while the beam velocity is low, the RF phase focusing is enhanced in the built-in bunching section which is used in compact accelerators. This paper reports two approaches to enhance the RF phase focusing. First, the phase velocities of bunching cells are optimized for maximum beam-focusing while preserving beam-bunching. Second, the first bunching cell is formed with a longitudinally asymmetric geometry to suppress the defocusing effect on a portion of the beam slices. In simulations using the PARMELA code, the beam radius was reduced by 50% compared to that produced by on-crest acceleration with longitudinally symmetric cells.

Background/Objectives: The objective of this study is to identify the recognition of male teachers and preliminary male teachers in the department of early childhood education in community college and those in 4-year University. Methods/ Statistical Analysis: For this, 4 students in the department of early childhood education in community college, 4 male teachers in community college, 4 students in the department of early childhood education in 4-year University, and 4 teachers in 4-year University have participated in the research. As for data collecting methods, in-depth interview, telephone interview, and email have been mostly utilized. Findings: As a result of research, there was no much difference in opinion from students and male teachers in the department of early childhood education in community college and those in 4-year University in terms of ‘motivation of entrance and college life,’ ‘teaching profession in kindergarten,’ and ‘expectation on the future’. However, the difference indicated that those from 4 year University had pride in their teaching positions. As for expectation in the future, all students and male teachers in the department of early childhood education in community college and 4-year University turned out to be under grave apprehensions about their future. Improvements/ Applications: This study is meaningful in that results of the research were reflected on the education for teachers through investigation of awareness of male students and teachers in academic fields.

For the upgrade project of the Pohang Light Source (PLS-II), button-type beam position monitors (BPM) have been made and tested. The BPMs have been tested on a test stand using a metallic wire connected to a 500 MHz RF signal generator. During the test of the BPMs, some of the BPMs show a response different from that of the others. The response of these BPMs was usually asymmetric and tilted. In this research, we did simulations to figure out which factors affected the response of BPM. For the simulations, we use the MATLAB code which is made of ALBA-cells and Diamond. Using this code, we studied the effect of defective button geometry on the response of BPM system and made defective BPMs combinations of geometry that minimized the asymmetry and the tilt of the response. From these results, we can use a defective BPM unit with another defective BPM unit that has a complementary button geometry.

It is known that the position reading obtained from the beam position monitor (BPM) mounted at the storage ring can be corrupted by the resonance mode. We carried out a three dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation of vacuum chambers of the storage ring of the Pohang Light Source (PLS) without simplified modeling to measure the frequencies of resonance modes excited in the vacuum chamber. The frequencies of resonance modes obtained by the eigenmode simulation are well matched with the peak frequencies of RF transmission scattering matrix ( S 21 ) graph of sector vacuum chamber measured using a network analyzer. It is found that a transverse electric (TE) resonance mode exists in the operation frequency band of BPM and the vertically oriented electric field of TE resonance mode is linked to the BPM position reading noise. Based on this study, we can easily design a vacuum chamber free from the BPM position reading noise caused by the TE resonance mode.

A 1.6-cell S-band photocathode rf gun has been fabricated and tested at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL). In this photocathode rf gun, the structure of the cathode assembly and the tuning methods have been changed to improve the performance of the rf gun. The maximum beam energy achieved is up to 5.2 MeV. The rf conditioning of the gun was done well, so that the dark current was not measurable until the electric field at the cathode reached 110 MV/m. Experimental measurements are presented and compared with theoretical analyses.

An extracellular phospholipase D (PLD(St)) was purified from Streptomyces tendae by two successive chromatographic steps on Sepharose CL-6B and DEAE-Sepharose CL-6B. Molecular weight of the PLD(St) was estimated to be approximately 43 kDa by sodium dodecyl sulfatepolyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Maximal activity was at pH 8 and 60 degrees C, and the enzyme was stable at or below 60 degrees C and between pH 8 and 10, when assayed after 1.5 and 24 h, respectively. The enzyme activity had an absolute requirement of Ca(2+), and the maximum activity was at 2 mM CaCl(2). The Km and Vmax values for phosphatidyl choline were 0.95 mM and 810 micromol min(-1) mg(-1), respectively. More importantly, PLD(St) could not catalyze transphosphatidylation of glycerol, L-serine, myo-inositol and ethanolamine, which have been extensively used to evaluate the activity. The result strongly suggests that PLD( St ) does not have the transphosphatidylation activity, thereby making it the first Streptomyces PLD possessing only hydrolytic activity. PLD(St) may therefore be a novel type of PLD enzyme.

The Pohang Light Source (PLS) at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) is a third-generation light source, the only synchrotron radiation facility in Korea, and the fifth machine of its kind in the world (see Figure 1). In 1988, PAL was organized for the construction of the PLS. Ground-breaking was celebrated in 1991, and PLS construction was completed in 1994. In 1995, the PLS opened two beamlines to public users. The PLS was initially operated at 2.0 GeV in 1995. Since 2002, the energy of the electron beam has been upgraded to 2.5 GeV (see Table 1 for the principal parameters of PLS). Remarkable increases in the number of beamlines, users, and scientific results have been achieved since the opening of the PLS in 1995. Two or three beamlines have been added each year for the past 15 years, and as of February 2009 we have in total 27 beamlines in operation and 3 beamlines under construction, which will be completed by the end of 2009 (Figures 2 and 3).

A simple and sensitive HPLC method was developed for the quantitative analysis of nargenicin in the culture broth of Nocardia sp. CS682, isolated from Korean soil. Nargenicin, an unusual macrolide antibiotic with potent anti-MRSA (methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) activity, was extracted from the culture broth with ethylacetate and then analyzed by HPLC using solvent A (0.5 M dipotassium phosphate pH 2.5-water: acetonitrile = 80:20, v/v) and solvent B (100% acetonitrile), at 215 nm. The calibration curve of nargenicin was linear with correlation coefficient greater than 0.99. This method provides precise analysis of the nargenicin amount present in the cell free culture medium, and may be applicable to analyze other bacterial cultures containing similar compounds.
