Abstract

Here we report on Landau level spectroscopy of an epitaxially grown thin film of the topological insulator Sb2Te3, complemented by ellipsometry and magneto-transport measurements. The observed response suggests that Sb2Te3 is a direct-gap semiconductor with the fundamental band gap located at the \Gamma point, or along the trigonal axis, and its width reaches Eg = 190 meV at low temperatures. Our data also indicate the presence of other low-energy extrema with a higher multiplicity in both the conduction and valence bands. The conclusions based on our experimental data are confronted with and to a great extent corroborated by the electronic band structure calculated using the GW method., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, to be published in Phys. 2. Study on the drying characteristics of green pellets of ultrafine iron ore concentrate

Abstract

Ultrafine iron ore concentrate pose challenges such as poor pellet formation performance, low-bursting temperature, and a complex drying thermal regime. To examine the drying characteristics of green pellets made from ultrafine iron ore concentrate, the Weibull distribution function and Dincer model were employed to fit and analyze the corresponding drying curve. The effects of drying temperature and air speed on the strength of dried pellets were also studied. The findings revealed that the drying process of green pellets of ultrafine iron ore concentrate involved three stages: ascending speed, constant speed, and descending speed. As the drying temperature and air speed increased, the drying time decreased. The coefficient of determination R2 for the fitted Weibull distribution function model ranged from 0.995 to 0.998, while the R2 value for the Dincer model ranged from 0.990 to 0.996. Both fitted models aligned with the experimental data and proved to be effective. According to the Bi values obtained through the Dincer model, raising the drying air speed in the initial stage and the drying air temperature in the subsequent stage of the drying system could efficiently remove moisture, reduce the risk of green pellet rupture, and maintain productivity. The moisture diffusion coefficient and convective mass transfer coefficient increased with rising temperature and air velocity, following the order of Deff > Dcal > D*eff as determined by the Weibull distribution function, Dincer model, and Fick’s second law. Additionally, the activation energy value of ultrafine iron ore concentrate for drying derived from the Arrhenius formula was 4515.60 J/(mol·K). Notably, increasing the drying temperature increased the strength of the dried particles due to their more compact and dense internal structure. This study offers theoretical support for simulating the drying of green ultrafine iron ore concentrate pellets and provides guidelines for selecting diverse drying conditions and designing drying equipment.

Abstract

In this paper, we address the formation of a magnetic flux rope (MFR) that erupted on 2012 July 12 and caused a strong geomagnetic storm event on July 15. Through analyzing the long-term evolution of the associated active region observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly and the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory, it is found that the twisted field of an MFR, indicated by a continuous S-shaped sigmoid, is built up from two groups of sheared arcades near the main polarity inversion line half day before the eruption. The temperature within the twisted field and sheared arcades is higher than that of the ambient volume, suggesting that magnetic reconnection most likely works there. The driver behind the reconnection is attributed to shearing and converging motions at magnetic footpoints with velocities in the range of 0.1--0.6 km s$^{-1}$. The rotation of the preceding sunspot also contributes to the MFR buildup. Extrapolated three-dimensional non-linear force-free field structures further reveal the locations of the reconnection to be in a bald-patch region and in a hyperbolic flux tube. About two hours before the eruption, indications for a second MFR in the form of an S-shaped hot channel are seen. It lies above the original MFR that continuously exists and includes a filament. The whole structure thus makes up a stable double-decker MFR system for hours prior to the eruption. Eventually, after entering the domain of instability, the high-lying MFR impulsively erupts to generate a fast coronal mass ejection and X-class flare; while the low-lying MFR remains behind and continuously maintains the sigmoidicity of the active region., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ. 12 pages, 9 figures, and 1 table. Abstract

The Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian describes the competition between superfluidity and Mott insulating behavior at zero temperature and commensurate filling as the strength of the on-site repulsion is varied. Gapped insulating phases also occur at non-integer densities as a consequence of longer ranged repulsive interactions. In this paper we explore the formation of gapped phases in coupled chains due instead to anisotropies $t_x \neq t_y$ in the bosonic hopping, extending the work of Crepin {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B 84, 054517 (2011)] on two coupled chains, where a gap was shown to occur at half filling for arbitrarily small interchain hopping $t_y$. Our main result is that, unlike the two-leg chains, for three- and four-leg chains, a charge gap requires a finite nonzero critical $t_y$ to open. However, these finite values are surprisingly small, well below the analogous values required for a fermionic band gap to open., Comment: 8 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) is used to determine the pairing and magnetic response for a Hubbard model built up from four-site clusters -a two-dimensional square lattice consisting of elemental 2x2 plaquettes with hopping $t$ and on-site repulsion $U$ coupled by an inter-plaquette hopping $t' \leq t$. Superconductivity in this geometry has previously been studied by a variety of analytic and numeric methods, with differing conclusions concerning whether the pairing correlations and transition temperature are raised near half-filling by the inhomogeneous hopping or not. For $U/t=4$, DQMC indicates an optimal $t'/t \approx 0.4$ at which the pairing vertex is most attractive. The optimal $t'/t$ increases with $U/t$. We then contrast our results for this plaquette model with a Hamiltonian which instead involves a regular pattern of site energies whose large site energy limit is the three band CuO$_2$ model; we show that there the inhomogeneity rapidly, and monotonically, suppresses pairing., Comment: 13 pages, 19 figures

8. Investigating Two Successive Flux Rope Eruptions In A Solar Active Region

Abstract

We investigate two successive flux rope (FR1 and FR2) eruptions resulting in two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) on 2012 January 23. Both FRs appeared as an EUV channel structure in the images of high temperature passbands of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly prior to the CME eruption. Through fitting their height evolution with a function consisting of linear and exponential components, we determine the onset time of the FR impulsive acceleration with high temporal accuracy for the first time. Using this onset time, we divide the evolution of the FRs in the low corona into two phases: a slow rise phase and an impulsive acceleration phase. In the slow rise phase of the FR1, the appearance of sporadic EUV and UV brightening and the strong shearing along the polarity inverse line indicates that the quasi-separatrix-layer reconnection likely initiates the slow rise. On the other hand for the FR2, we mainly contribute its slow rise to the FR1 eruption, which partially opened the overlying field and thus decreased the magnetic restriction. At the onset of the impulsive acceleration phase, the FR1 (FR2) reaches the critical height of 84.4$\pm$11.2 Mm (86.2$\pm$13.0 Mm) where the decline of the overlying field with height is fast enough to trigger the torus instability. After a very short interval ($\sim$2 minutes), the flare emission began to enhance. These results reveal the compound activity involving multiple magnetic FRs and further suggest that the ideal torus instability probably plays the essential role of initiating the impulsive acceleration of CMEs., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, Comments are welcome

Abstract

The two dimensional square lattice hard-core boson Hubbard model with near neighbor interactions has a `checkerboard' charge density wave insulating phase at half-filling and sufficiently large intersite repulsion. When doped, rather than forming a supersolid phase in which long range charge density wave correlations coexist with a condensation of superfluid defects, the system instead phase separates. However, it is known that there are other lattice geometries and interaction patterns for which such coexistence takes place. In this paper we explore the possibility that anisotropic hopping or anisotropic near neighbor repulsion might similarly stabilize the square lattice supersolid. By considering the charge density wave structure factor and superfluid density for different ratios of interaction strength and hybridization in the $\hat x$ and $\hat y$ directions, we conclude that phase separation still occurs., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures

10. Modeling Magnetic Field Structure of a Solar Active Region Corona using Nonlinear Force-Free Fields in Spherical Geometry

Abstract

We test a nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) optimization code in spherical geometry using an analytical solution from Low and Lou. Several tests are run, ranging from idealized cases where exact vector field data are provided on all boundaries, to cases where noisy vector data are provided on only the lower boundary (approximating the solar problem). Analytical tests also show that the NLFFF code in the spherical geometry performs better than that in the Cartesian one when the field of view of the bottom boundary is large, say, $20^\circ \times 20^\circ$. Additionally, We apply the NLFFF model to an active region observed by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) both before and after an M8.7 flare. For each observation time, we initialize the models using potential field source surface (PFSS) extrapolations based on either a synoptic chart or a flux-dispersal model, and compare the resulting NLFFF models. The results show that NLFFF extrapolations using the flux-dispersal model as the boundary condition have slightly lower, therefore better, force-free and divergence-free metrics, and contain larger free magnetic energy. By comparing the extrapolated magnetic field lines with the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) observations by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board SDO, we find that the NLFFF performs better than the PFSS not only for the core field of the flare productive region, but also for large EUV loops higher than 50 Mm., Comment: 34 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

Using $(106\pm4)\times 10^6$ $\psip$ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider, we present measurements of the branching fractions for psi' decays to $K^{+}K^{-}\pi^{0}$ and $K^{+}K^{-}\eta$. In these final states, the decay $\psi'\to K_2^{*}(1430)^+K^-+c.c.$ is observed for the first time, and its branching fraction is measured to be $(7.12\pm{0.62}{\rm (stat.)}^{+1.13}_{-0.61}{\rm (syst.)})\times 10^{-5}$, which indicates a violation of the helicity selection rule in $\psip$ decays. The branching fractions of $\psi'\to K^*(892)^+K^-+c.c., \phi\eta, \phi\pi^0$ are also measured. Abstract

Using a sample of $(225.2\pm 2.8)\times 10^6$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we present results of a study of $J/\psi\rightarrow \gamma\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$ and report the first observation of the isospin violating decay $J/\psi\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Sigma}^{0}+c.c.$, in which $\bar{\Sigma}^{0}$ decays to $\gamma \bar{\Lambda}$. The measured branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\rightarrow\bar{\Lambda}\Sigma^{0}$) = $(1.46\pm0.11\pm0.12) \times10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Sigma^{0}}$) = $(1.37\pm0.12\pm0.11) \times10^{-5}$. We search for $\Lambda(1520) \rightarrow \gamma \Lambda$ decay, and find no evident signal, and an upper limit for the product branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}(1520)+c.c.)\times \mathcal{B}(\Lambda(1520)\rightarrow\gamma\Lambda)<4.1 \times10^{-6}$ is set at the 90% confidence level. We also report the observation of $\eta_{c}\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$ in $J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma \eta_{c}$, $\eta_{c}\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$ and measure the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(\eta_{c}\rightarrow\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}) =(1.16\pm0.12 (stat)\pm0.19(syst)\pm0.28(PDG))\times10^{-3}$., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures; This is a publication-version at Phys. Abstract

Using a sample of 106 million \psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we have made the first measurement of the M1 transition between the radially excited charmonium S-wave spin-triplet and the radially excited S-wave spin-singlet states: \psi(3686)\to\gamma\eta_c(2S). Analyses of the processes \psi(2S)\to \gamma\eta_c(2S) with \eta_c(2S)\to \K_S^0 K\pi and K^+K^-\pi^0 gave an \eta_c(2S) signal with a statistical significance of greater than 10 standard deviations under a wide range of assumptions about the signal and background properties. The data are used to obtain measurements of the \eta_c(2S) mass (M(\eta_c(2S))=3637.6\pm 2.9_\mathrm{stat}\pm 1.6_\mathrm{sys} MeV/c^2), width (\Gamma(\eta_c(2S))=16.9\pm 6.4_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.8_\mathrm{sys} MeV), and the product branching fraction (\BR(\psi(3686)\to \gamma\eta_c(2S))\times \BR(\eta_c(2S)\to K\bar K\pi) = (1.30\pm 0.20_\mathrm{stat}\pm 0.30_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-5}). Combining our result with a BaBar measurement of \BR(\eta_c(2S)\to K\bar K \pi), we find the branching fraction of the M1 transition to be \BR(\psi(3686)\to\gamma\eta_c(2S)) = (6.8\pm 1.1_\mathrm{stat}\pm 4.5_\mathrm{sys})\times 10^{-4}., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

Abstract

Based on a data sample of 106 M $\psi^{\prime}$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the decays $\psi^{\prime}\ar\gamma\chi_{c0, 2}$,$\chi_{c0, 2}\ar\gamma\gamma$ are studied to determine the two-photon widths of the $\chi_{c0, 2}$ states. The two-photon decay branching fractions are determined to be ${\cal B}(\chi_{c0}\ar\gamma\gamma) = (2.24\pm 0.19\pm 0.12\pm 0.08)\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(\chi_{c2}\ar\gamma\gamma) = (3.21\pm 0.18\pm 0.17\pm 0.13)\times 10^{-4}$. From these, the two-photon widths are determined to be $\Gamma_{\gamma \gamma}(\chi_{c0}) = (2.33\pm0.20\pm0.13\pm0.17)$ keV, $\Gamma_{\gamma \gamma}(\chi_{c2}) = (0.63\pm0.04\pm0.04\pm0.04)$ keV, and $\cal R$ $=\Gamma_{\gamma \gamma}(\chi_{c2})/\Gamma_{\gamma \gamma}(\chi_{c0})=0.271\pm 0.029\pm 0.013\pm 0.027$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and those from the PDG ${\cal B}(\psi^{\prime}\ar\gamma\chi_{c0,2})$ and $\Gamma(\chi_{c0,2})$ errors, respectively. The ratio of the two-photon widths for helicity $\lambda=0$ and helicity $\lambda=2$ components in the decay $\chi_{c2}\ar\gamma\gamma$ is measured for the first time to be $f_{0/2} =\Gamma^{\lambda=0}_{\gamma\gamma}(\chi_{c2})/\Gamma^{\lambda=2}_{\gamma\gamma}(\chi_{c2}) = 0.00\pm0.02\pm0.02$., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The decays $J/\psi\to p\bar{p}$ and $J/\psi\to n\bar{n}$ have been investigated with a sample of 225.2 million $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\to p\bar{p})=(2.112\pm0.004\pm0.031)\times10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\to n\bar{n})=(2.07\pm0.01\pm0.17)\times10^{-3}$. Distributions of the angle $\theta$ between the proton or anti-neutron and the beam direction are well described by the form $1+\alpha\cos^2\theta$, and we find $\alpha=0.595\pm0.012\pm0.015$ for $J/\psi\to p\bar{p}$ and $\alpha=0.50\pm0.04\pm0.21$ for $J/\psi\to n\bar{n}$. Our branching-fraction results suggest a large phase angle between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes describing the $J/\psi\to N\bar{N}$ decay., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, the 2nd version, submitted to PRD

Abstract

The two-photon transition $\psi(3686)\to\gamma\gamma J/\psi$ is studied in a sample of 106 million $\psi(3686)$ decays collected by the BESIII detector. The branching fraction is measured to be $(3.1\pm0.6(\unit{stat})^{+0.8}_{-1.0}(\unit{syst})) \times10^{-4}$ using $J/\psi\to e^+e^-$ and $J/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decays, and its upper limit is estimated to be $4.5\times10^{-4}$ at the 90% conference level. This work represents the first measurement of a two-photon transition among charmonium states. The orientation of the $\psi(3686)$ decay plane and the $J/\psi$ polarization in this decay are also studied. In addition, the product branching fractions of sequential $E1$ transitions $\psi(3686)\to\gamma\chi_{cJ}, \chi_{cJ}\to\gamma J/\psi (J=0,1,2)$ are reported., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

We study the decays of the J/psi and psi' mesons to pi+pi-pi0 using data samples at both resonances collected with the BES III detector in 2009. We measure the corresponding branching fractions with unprecedented precision and provide mass spectra and Dalitz plots. The branching fraction for J/psi -> pi+pi-pi0 is determined to be (2.137 +- 0.004 (stat.) +0.058-0.056 (syst.) +0.027-0.026 (norm.))*10-2, and the branching fraction for psi' -> pi+pi-pi0 is measured as (2.14 +- 0.03 (stat.) +0.08-0.07 (syst.) +0.09-0.08 (norm.))*10-4. The J/psi decay is found to be dominated by an intermediate rho(770) state, whereas the psi' decay is dominated by di-pion masses around 2.2 GeV/c2, leading to strikingly different Dalitz distributions., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The decays $J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ and $J/\psi \rightarrow \gamma \pi^0\pi^0\pi^0$ are analyzed using a sample of 225 million $\jpsi$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay of $\eta(1405)\ar f_{0}(980)\pi^0$ with a large isospin violation is observed for the first time. The width of the $f_{0}(980)$ observed in the dipion mass spectra is anomalously narrower than the world average. Abstract

The mass and width of the lowest lying S-wave spin singlet charmonium state, the eta_c, are measured using a data sample of 1.06x10^8 psi' decays collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. We use a model that incorporates interference between the signal reaction, psi' -> gamma eta_c, and a non-resonant radiative background to successfully describe the line shape of the eta_c. We measure the eta_c mass to be 2984.3 +- 0.6 +- 0.6 MeV/c^2 and the total width to be 32.0 +- 1.2 +- 1.0 MeV, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, 1 table, matches Phys. Abstract

Decays of $\chi_{c1}$ to vector meson pairs $\phi\phi$, $\omega\omega$ and $\omega\phi$ are observed for the first time using $(106\pm4)\times 10^6$ $\psip$ events accumulated at the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ collider. The branching fractions are measured to be $(4.4\pm 0.3\pm 0.5)\times 10^{-4}$, $(6.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.7)\times 10^{-4}$, and $(2.2\pm 0.6\pm 0.2)\times 10^{-5}$, for $\chi_{c1}\to \phi\phi$, $\omega\omega$, and $\omega\phi$, respectively. The observation of $\chi_{c1}$ decays into a pair of vector mesons $\phi\phi$, $\omega\omega$ and $\omega\phi$ indicates that the hadron helicity selection rule is significantly violated in $\chi_{cJ}$ decays. In addition, the measurement of $\chi_{cJ}\to \omega\phi$ gives the rate of doubly OZI-suppressed decay. Abstract

Anaerobic digestion of lipid-rich wastewater generally suffers from foaming induced by long chain fatty acid (LCFA). However, a systematic understanding of LCFA inhibition, especially the physical inhibition on interfacial interaction still remains unclear. Here, we combined bubble probe atomic force microscope and impinging-jet technique to unravel the interfacial interactions controlled by long chain fatty acids in anaerobic digestion. We showed that LCFA had a significant inhibition on methane production in anaerobic reactors for the inhibition of the conversion of VFAs to methane. By measuring the LCFA influence on methanogenic archaea Methanosarcina acetivorans C2A, the results demonstrated that methanogenesis was limited for substrates utilization but not metabolic pathways. The impinging-jet technique results indicated that LCFA enhanced bubble separation from anaerobic granules and reduced the bubble-bubble coalescence probability. In addition, the bubble probe atomic force microscope (AFM) revealed that LCFA enhanced the adhesion force between bubbles by enhancing electrical double layer (EDL) repulsion and decreasing hydrophobic interactions. Overall, these results complement framework of LCFA inhibition in anerobic digestion and provide a nanomechanical insight into the fundamental interfacial interactions related to bubbles in anaerobic reactors.

34. How to recognize and respond to monkeypox 2022 outbreak in non-endemic countries: a narrative review.

Abstract

In May 2022, cases of monkeypox were reported in non-monkeypox endemic countries such as Europe and the United States. As of 26 May, a cumulative total of 257 laboratory-confirmed cases and approximately 120 suspected cases had been reported to WHO from non-monkeypox endemic countries. This event immediately caused great concern and alarm to the WHO and national virologists. This paper aims to summarize the epidemiological and clinical features of previous monkeypox virus infections and the current local outbreaks in non-monkeypox endemic countries and propose countermeasures to control the current localized infections in non-monkeypox endemic areas as soon as possible. We reviewed the literature and websites related to monkeypox. We searched Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and African Journals Online using the medical subject terms “monkeypox”, “monkeypox virus”, “monkeypox outbreak”, “non-monkeypox endemic areas”, “clinical features”, “epidemiology”, “transmission”, and “infection”. We found that monkeypox is a zoonotic disease of forest animals that has occurred mainly in West and Central Africa since the first case was reported in the Congo in 1970, with occasional cases spreading to countries such as the United States and Europe. It is common among students, housekeepers, hunters, farmers and housewives. It is more common in males than females, occurs below middle age, and is more common in children under 10. The incubation period is 5 to 21 days, and the rash usually appears within 1 to 3 days after the onset of fever. Clinical manifestations include fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, headache, muscle pain and unusual weakness. Most patients have mild symptoms that last from 2 to 4 weeks. The source of the sudden outbreak in Europe and the United States is currently unknown and occurs mostly in homosexuals who have sex with men (MSM). Outbreaks of monkeypox virus infection in non-monkeypox endemic areas have received widespread attention and focus. We believe that a scientific response to the transmission route of monkeypox virus and, where necessary, vaccination of high-risk groups against the monkeypox smallpox will control infection in non-monkeypox endemic areas.
