A cobalt(II) complex was synthesized from the template condensation of tris(2-aminoethyl)-amine and formaldehyde in the presence of cobalt(II) ion. The product is an encapsulating macrobicyclic ligand, 4,14,19-tris(methoxymethyl)-1,4,6,9,12,14,19,21-octaazabicyclo [7.7.7]tricosane. X-ray crystallography revealed that the cobalt ion exhibit a trigonal bipyramidal geometry.

The one-pot reaction of tris(2-amino-ethyl)amine and formaldehyde in the presence of an anion led to the formation of the novel mononuclear nickel(II) complex of a face-to-face bis(macrocyclic) ligand. The resulting mononuclear nickel(II) complex was composed of two fully saturated 10-membered tetraaza macrocyclic subunits that were linked together by two ethylene chains. Furthermore, complex exhibited a tetragonally distorted octahedral coordination geometry.

The direct template condensation reaction of formaldehyde and amines can be utilized to synthesize Au(III) macrocyclic complexes in high yields. Direct template condensation produces a six-coordinate [Au(L)Cl2]AuCl4 and a four-coordinate [Au(L)(ClO4)3.1/2H2O. The products exhibit hydroxyethyl pendants on the nitrogen bridgeheads with an octahedral geometry on the Au(III) ion. The geometry is composed of four secondary nitrogens and two chlorides with hydogen bonds between amine hydrogens, chlorides and hydroxyl oxygens.

The synthesis and characterization of the five-coordinate Ni(I) complex, (R,S,R,S)- Ni(L)(NHC OH CH3) ClO4, where L = 1,3,6,8,12,15-hexaazatricyclo(13.3.1.1 super8,12), are described. The scheme involves the reduction of Ni(II) complex (R,R,S,S)- Ni(L) -(ClO4)2.1/2H20 with Na(Hg) in MeCn under a nitrogen atmosphere. Structural analysis of the macrocylic complex showed two sets of Ni-N bond distances.

Template condensation reactions enable the preparation of nickel(II) complexes of hexaaza macrocyclic ligands with pendant functional groups. Acetic anhydride reacts with the hydroxyl pendant groups of an Ni(II) complex to produce another Ni(II) complex. In solution, all Ni(II) complexes exhibit square-planar geometry. X-ray studies suggest one of the complexes to be a coordination polymer. Coordination of nitrite pendant groups with the intermolecular Ni(II) ions leads to the formation of the coordination polymer.

I devoted myself to studying chemistry and conducting chemical research for 50 years since I entered the department of chemistry, Seoul National University, in March 1967 as a college student until I eventually retired as a university professor in February 2017. For this, we both got admission from the University of Chicago, married at the age of 22, and went for the U.S. Since then, I had changed my maiden name, Myunghyun Paik, to Myunghyun P. Suh (MP Suh), which I have used as my international name in all my publications. A bowl-shaped dodecaaza macrotetracycle having tricopper cores, [Cu3(L)(mu3-O)](ClO4)4.2H2O (1) and [Cu3(L)(mu3-OH)]Cl0.5(ClO4)4.5.1.5H2O (2), were synthesized using the one-pot metal template condensation reactions. Both complex 1 and 2 manifested unusual magnetic behaviors of mixed ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions. The molecular bowl L contained three Cu(II) ions linked to a central oxo ion and found at the corners of an equilateral triangle. The geometrical configuration of each Cu(II) ion presented a distorted trigonal bipyramid.

Guest molecules in a metal–organic framework (MOF), [Zn4O(CPMA)3]·6DMF (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), with an interpenetrating pcu net were exchanged with benzene, n-hexane, and methanol in a single-crystal to single-crystal (SC–SC) manner, which involved the sliding motion of the interpenetrating network, as well as the dynamic movements of the molecular components, and was triggered by host–guest interactions.
