2. Assessment of the survival of dental implants in irradiated jaws following treatment of oral cancer: A retrospective study

Abstract

Background: In patients undergoing head and neck surgery for various pathologic conditions, implants are one of the best restorative options and are increasing widely used. Therefore, we evaluated the success of dental implants in the irradiated jaws of patients following treatment of oral cancer oral cancer treated patients. Materials and Methods: Data of oral cancer treated patients was collected retrospectively from 2002 to 2008. We took 46 oral cancer treated patients in which implants were placed in irradiated jaws for rehabilitation. Results: It was found that out of 162 dental implants placed, 52 failed. Abstract

Lithium ions shuttle between electrodes through the ceramic solid electrolyte across the boundary regions in a solid-state Li-ion battery. This work demonstrates how phonon vibrations get altered by sintering conditions, and grain boundaries (GBs) could be useful in enhancing the ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes. GB engineered Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) ceramics are prepared using a sol-gel process and performed sintering under different conditions, viz., spark plasma sintering (SPS) and conventional isothermal sintering (CIS). The former exhibits GB regions with amorphous characteristics, whereas the latter shows a sharp boundary between crystalline grains. LATP-SPS ceramic shows two orders of higher ionic conductivity (σ = 1.02 × 10−5 S/cm at 300 K and 100 Hz) than LATP-CIS. We investigate the interrelation between lattice vibration and lithium-ion migration by monitoring the changes in vibrational mode characteristics of LATP ceramics through temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy. Raman modes of LATP-SPS exhibit a higher Raman shift (∼2 cm−1 at 123 K) due to increased defects, preferentially from grain boundary regions, compared to the LATP-CIS pellet. Most of the vibrational modes undergo a red shift (∼10 cm−1) with increasing temperature, except for the O–P–O bending mode [A1g(3)], which exhibits a blue shift (∼3 cm−1). These observations correlate with interstitial ionic migration in the LATP framework. Force constant of the observed Raman modes suggests that lithium-ion migration is assisted significantly by dynamic structural changes of the (PO4)3− sublattice. Anharmonicities observed from temperature-dependent changes in Raman profiles are explained using three-phonon and four-phonon scattering processes, which lower the migration barrier and, hence, contribute to higher ionic conductivity. 18. Proteasome Inhibition Enhances the Induction and Impairs the Maintenance of Late-Phase Long-Term Potentiation

Abstract

Protein degradation by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway plays important roles in synaptic plasticity, but the molecular mechanisms by which proteolysis regulates synaptic strength are not well understood. We investigated the role of the proteasome in hippocampal late-phase long-term potentiation (L-LTP), a model for enduring synaptic plasticity. We show here that inhibition of the proteasome enhances the induction of L-LTP, but inhibits its maintenance. Proteasome inhibitor-mediated enhancement of the early part of L-LTP requires activation of NMDA receptors and the cAMP-dependent protein kinase. Augmentation of L-LTP induction by proteasome inhibition is blocked by a protein synthesis inhibitor anisomycin and is sensitive to the drug rapamycin. Our findings indicate that proteasome inhibition increases the induction of L-LTP by stabilizing locally translated proteins in dendrites. In addition, our data show that inhibition of the proteasome blocks transcription of "brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)", which is a cAMP-responsive element-binding protein (CREB)-inducible gene. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that the proteasome inhibitors block degradation of ATF4, a CREB repressor. Thus, proteasome inhibition appears to hinder CREB-mediated transcription. Our results indicate that blockade of proteasome activity obstructs the maintenance of L-LTP by interfering with transcription as well as translation required to sustain L-LTP. Thus, proteasome-mediated proteolysis has different roles during the induction and the maintenance of L-LTP.

Abstract

Introduction Non-utilization of public health care facilities by women in India is one of the crucial concerns when ensuring universal health coverage. However, contrary to the fact that women need more health care assistance throughout their lifespan, there is a considerable lack of awareness among them, and this is a major contributor to their unwillingness to use these services. Methods A community-based descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among women of the reproductive age group (15-49 years) in an urban field practice area of a tertiary health care center in central India. Data were collected for two months by interview technique using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Epi Info version 7.2.2.6 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia) software. Results Of the total 132 women, 77 (58.33%) respondents were aware of the availability of public health care facilities in their area of residence. Despite this, only 59 (44.69%) were utilizing the services. Non-utilization of public health care facilities was significantly more in those belonging to upper socioeconomic status (chi-square = 14.36, p < 0.05 at a degree of freedom [df] = 2). The common reasons being lack of personal attention, cleanliness, and overcrowding at these facilities. Conclusion Even though a substantial population in central India cannot afford private or corporate health care services, the utilization of public health care facilities has not been up to the mark. Overall, most of the subjects were aware of the facilities available to them. This awareness, however, did not match with the utilization of such facilities. Less than half of the women were utilizing the public health care facilities.

Abstract

In recent years, proteolysis by the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway has attained prominence as a new molecular mechanism that regulates many vital functions of the nervous system, including development of synaptic connections and synaptic plasticity. Here, we review the latest findings on the role of proteolysis in sculpting the nervous system through control of axonal growth, axonal and dendritic pruning, and regulation of synaptic size and number. We also discuss how protein degradation functions in synaptic plasticity and the roles of local proteolysis in neuronal compartments. In addition, we describe how proteolysis is associated with Alzheimer's disease and ataxia. Furthermore, we highlight the recent approaches that exploit components of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway for amelioration of these diseases in animal models.

Abstract

Parkin and other unrelated proteins contain a ubiquitin-like domain (UbLD). This article describes a motif that might be important in the interaction of UbLD-containing proteins (UbLPs) with the proteasome. The proteasome-interacting motif, which is conserved in a subset of UbLPs, such as parkin, Rad23 and several transcription factors, is likely to enable the UbLPs to form a complex with the proteasome for proteolysis or the recently discovered non-proteolytic functions of the proteasome.

Abstract

Introduction: Alteration in the various markers is seen in diabetic nephropathy (DN). In the current research, four different markers were evaluated and were examined for their diagnostic value in the nephropathic type 2 diabetes patients. Methods: A prospective clinical trial was piloted with diabetic male subjects with nephropathy. The subjects were followed up for 9 months. Thirty subjects were recruited as type 2 diabetes mellitus patients without nephropathy as controls. The interventional groups were grouped again as microalbuminuria, normoalbuminuria, and hyperfiltration. All of them underwent testing for urinary biomarkers like urine protein, ACR, HbA1C, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Correlation and logistic regression were used to compare all diagnostic tests across various groupings. Results: The greatest area under curve (AUC) values were .90 and .91 for AGT and AGT/Cr, respectively. The AUC, specificity, sensitivity, and cut-off value of AGT/Cr were, respectively, .91, 85%, 91%, and 4.36 mg/g. When using urine as the cut-off, the sensitivity was 42 and 100 for ACR and eGFR both. All other biomarkers had lower values than the AGT. Less than. 50 was evident for NGAL/Cr and NAGL. Conclusions: To identify DN, before the initiation of the albuminuria, compared to other diagnostic markers, urinary AGT demonstrated a greater diagnostic value. Further research is suggested to corroborate the findings.

Abstract

The Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), like CNN/DNN and LSTM, are not biologically plausible. Despite their initial success, they cannot attain the cognitive capabilities enabled by the dynamic hierarchical associative memory systems of biological brains. The biologically plausible spiking brain models, e.g., cortex, basal ganglia, and amygdala, have a greater potential to achieve biological brain like cognitive capabilities. Bayesian Confidence Propagation Neural Network (BCPNN) is a biologically plausible spiking model of the cortex. A human-scale model of BCPNN in real-time requires 162 TFlop/s, 50 TBs of synaptic weight storage to be accessed with a bandwidth of 200 TBs. The spiking bandwidth is relatively modest at 250 GBs/s. A hand-optimized implementation of rodent scale BCPNN has been done on Tesla K80 GPUs require 3 kWs, we extrapolate from that a human scale network will require 3 MWs. These power numbers rule out such implementations for field deployment as cognition engines in embedded systems. The key innovation that this paper reports is that it is feasible and affordable to implement real-time BCPNN as a custom tiled application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) in 28 nm technology with custom 3D DRAM - eBrainII - that consumes 3 kW for human scale and 12 watts for rodent scale. Such implementations eminently fulfill the demands for field deployment.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Multiple arterial grafts may result in longer survival than single arterial grafts after coronary-artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. We evaluated the use of bilateral internal-thoracic-artery grafts for CABG. METHODS We randomly assigned patients scheduled for CABG to undergo bilateral or single internal-thoracic-artery grafting. Additional arterial or vein grafts were used as indicated. The primary outcome was death from any cause at 10 years. The composite of death from any cause, myocardial infarction, or stroke was a secondary outcome. RESULTS A total of 1548 patients were randomly assigned to undergo bilateral internal-thoracic-artery grafting (the bilateral-graft group) and 1554 to undergo single internal-thoracic-artery grafting (the single-graft group). In the bilateral-graft group, 13.9% of the patients received only a single internal-thoracic-artery graft, and in the single-graft group, 21.8% of the patients also received a radial-artery graft. Vital status was not known for 2.3% of the patients at 10 years. In the intention-to-treat analysis at 10 years, there were 315 deaths (20.3% of the patients) in the bilateral-graft group and 329 deaths (21.2%) in the single-graft group (hazard ratio, 0.96; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.82 to 1.12; P=0.62). Regarding the composite outcome of death, myocardial infarction, or stroke, there were 385 patients (24.9%) with an event in the bilateral-graft group and 425 patients (27.3%) with an event in the single-graft group (hazard ratio, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.79 to 1.03). CONCLUSIONS Among patients who were scheduled for CABG and had been randomly assigned to undergo bilateral or single internal-thoracic-artery grafting, there was no significant between-group difference in the rate of death from any cause at 10 years in the intention-to-treat analysis. Further studies are needed to determine whether multiple arterial grafts provide better outcomes than a single internal-thoracic-artery graft. Abstract

Background Various agents are used these days for increasing the esthetics. One such procedure is bleaching that offers various advantages, as it is minimal invasive and cheap option to color the teeth and remove stain. The altered enamel after the bleaching process shows surface demineralization and porosities. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of different bleaching agents on the microhardness of enamel. Materials and methods A total of 100 freshly human extracted maxillary premolar teeth were selected for the study. Teeth with sound tooth structure were included for the study. All the specimens were randomly divided into four groups with 25 specimens in each group depending upon the type of bleaching agent used: Group A, artificial saliva (Control group); Group B, 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP); Group C, 25% HP; Group D, 10% carbamide peroxide (CP). Knoop Hardness Number (KHN) was calculated at 24, 48-hour, and 7-week interval. Results Results showed no statistical significant differences between the microhardness of enamel of different groups (p < 0.005). A slight fall in the value of KHN was seen in all the groups, except for the control group, although the results were statistically nonsignificant (p > 0.005). Conclusion Although nonsignificantly, all the bleaching solutions produced some amount of alterations in the microstructure of enamel. More studies with higher study groups and more advanced estimation technologies are required to minimize microstructure alterations and promote for better outcome of bleaching procedures. Abstract

Introduction: System injury, manifested as metabolic dysfunction is a common side effect of chemotherapy. Chemical stress on hepatic and kidney cells can be evaluated by biochemical analysis, including serum aminotransferases, glutathione levels and extent of lipid peroxidation. Combined treatment of chemotherapy along with the natural products such as phytochemicals may be a newer approach to reduce the side effects and betterment of chemotherapy. Objective: The present study was conducted to assay kidney and liver associated parameters on animals exposed to etoposide, and the protective effect of different doses of Spondias pinnata bark extract on normal cells. In this study, total 24 male Wistar rats ( either sex) aged between 60 to 90 days were considered. Each group consisted of six rats. Levels of Alanine and Aspartate aminotransferases were estimated using semi-auto analyser and GSH, GST, TAO and LPx by spectrophotometry. Results and Conclusion: Data analyzed using Graph Pad 5.0. Variation in the analyzed parameters were found between control, chemotherapy and Spondias pinnata groups. Results of the study show that significant increase in TBARS levels indicative of etoposide induced oxidative stress could be prevented by treatment with S. pinnata. GST levels also support the preventive action of S. pinnata against etoposide induced stress. However, TAO and transaminases remain unaltered in the study groups
