In the present study with 86 undergraduate students, we related trait Mathematics Anxiety (MA) with two indicators of state anxiety: self-reported state anxiety and electrodermal activity (EDA). Extending existing research, we included appraisals of control and perceived value in hierarchical multiple regression analyses in accordance with the control-value theory of achievement emotions (Pekrun, 2006). Results showed that trait MA predicted self-reported state anxiety, while no additional variance was explained by including control and value. In contrast, we found no significant relation between trait MA and physiological state anxiety, but a significant, negative three-way interaction effect with control and value. Regression coefficients indicated that trait MA predicted physiological state anxiety, but only in the presence of negative perceived control and positive perceived value. Thus, our results support the control-value theory for physiological state anxiety, but not for self-reports. They emphasize the need to distinguish between trait and state MA, the advantages of adopting the control-value theory, and the benefits of using EDA recording as a supplemental assessment method for state anxiety.

Mathematical word problem solving is influenced by various characteristics of the task and the person solving it. Yet, previous research has rarely related these characteristics to holistically answer which word problem requires which set of individual cognitive skills. In the present study, we conducted a secondary data analysis on a dataset of N = 1282 undergraduate students solving six mathematical word problems from the "Programme for International Student Assessment" (PISA). Previous results had indicated substantial variability in the contribution of individual cognitive skills to the correct solution of the different tasks. Here, we exploratively reanalyzed the data to investigate which task characteristics may account for this variability, considering verbal, arithmetic, spatial, and general reasoning skills simultaneously. Results indicate that verbal skills were the most consistent predictor of successful word problem solving in these tasks, arithmetic skills only predicted the correct solution of word problems containing calculations, spatial skills predicted solution rates in the presence of a visual representation, and general reasoning skills were more relevant in simpler problems that could be easily solved using heuristics. We discuss possible implications, emphasizing how word problems may differ with regard to the cognitive skills required to solve them correctly.

Argumentative scripts for computer-supported collaborative learning are scaffolds that prompt learners to take over distributed roles and to move through a sequence of activities that specify an argumentative learning discourse. Argumentative scripts may lead to suboptimal effects on learning outcomes when their level of scaffolding does not fit learners' prerequisites regarding argumentation. This study compares the effects of three different levels of argumentative scripts on learners' argumentation knowledge and learning motivation. Results show that university freshmen in the context of mathematics seem to learn best when the argumentative script targets a medium level, scaffolding the sequence of social discourse, but not necessarily the construction of single arguments. Non-significant results regarding the effects on motivational variables speak against the concern that a too detailed structure of scripts may be detrimental for learning due to reduced learning motivation.

Tasks in which learners are asked to compare two data sets using box plots and decide which distribution contains more observations above a given threshold have already been investigated in research. There are indications that these tasks are solved schema-based and that different (correct and erroneous) schemas are used depending on the arrangement of the quartiles around the threshold. Erroneous schemas can cause systematic errors and are often based on typical misconceptions. For example, if learners did not complete the conceptual change and assume that in box plots - like in most other statistical representations (e.g., bar or circle diagrams) - more (box) area also represents more observations, they decide the task according to which box plot shows more box area above the threshold. However, this can lead to incorrect answers, as the box area does not represent frequency but the range of the middle half of the data (interquartile range) and thus a measure of variability. So far, these schema-based reasoning processes have mainly been investigated via differences in solution rates of congruent and incongruent items. The present study investigates whether eye-tracking data can help to better understand which information is processed in the different schemas. Our research interest is based on hypotheses specifying which box plot components are significantly involved in the different schemas. We assume that the gaze patterns of learners using different schemas differ both regarding the number and duration of fixations on the relevant box plot components (areas of interest) and in terms of the number of transitions between them. We asked N = 14 participants to solve congruent and incongruent items and simultaneously collected eye movement data. In the analysis, we first used the solution rates to assign the schemas most likely used. Subsequently, the eye-tracking data were analyzed regarding differences in line with our hypotheses. We found hypothesis-compliant effects in all schemas regarding the number of fixations and transitions, but not regarding fixation duration. These results not only validate the schemas identified in previous studies, but also indicate that the schemas differ primarily in terms of which quartile is focused. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eye tracking is an increasingly popular method in mathematics education. While the technology has greatly evolved in recent years, there is a debate about the specific benefits that eye tracking offers and about the kinds of insights it may allow. The aim of this review is to contribute to this discussion by providing a comprehensive overview of the use of eye tracking in mathematics education research. We reviewed 161 eye-tracking studies published between 1921 and 2018 to assess what domains and topics were addressed, how the method was used, and how eye movements were related to mathematical thinking and learning. The results show that most studies were in the domain of numbers and arithmetic, but that a large variety of other areas of mathematics education research was investigated as well. We identify a need to report more methodological details in eye-tracking studies and to be more critical about how to gather, analyze, and interpret eye-tracking data. In conclusion, eye tracking seemed particularly beneficial for studying processes rather than outcomes, for revealing mental representations, and for assessing subconscious aspects of mathematical thinking.

This study analyzed the relative importance of different cognitive abilities for solving complex mathematical word problems (CWPs)--a demanding task of high relevance for diverse fields and contexts. We investigated the effects of spatial, verbal, numerical, and general reasoning abilities as well as gender on CWP performance among N = 1282 first-year university engineering students. Generalized linear mixed models unveiled significant unique effects of spatial ability, [beta] = 0.284, verbal ability, [beta] = 0.342, numerical ability, [beta] = 0.164, general reasoning, [beta] = 0.248, and an overall gender effect in favor of male students, [beta] = 0.285. Analyses revealed negligible to small gender effects in verbal and general reasoning ability. Despite a gender effect in spatial ability, d = 0.48, and numerical ability, d = 0.30--both in favor of male students--further analyses showed that effects of all measured cognitive abilities on CWP solving were comparable for both women and men. Our results underpin that CWP solving requires a broad facet of cognitive abilities besides mere mathematical competencies. Since gender differences in CWP solving were not fully explained by differences in the four measured cognitive abilities, gender-specific attitudes, beliefs, and emotions could be considered possible affective moderators of CWP performance.

Language plays an important role in word problem solving. Accordingly, the language in which a word problem is presented could affect its solution process. In particular, East-Asian, non-alphabetic languages are assumed to provide specific benefits for mathematics compared to Indo-European, alphabetic languages. By analyzing students' eye movements in a cross-linguistic comparative study, we analyzed word problem solving processes in Chinese and German. 72 German and 67 Taiwanese undergraduate students solved PISA word problems in their own language. Results showed differences in eye movements of students, between the two languages. Moreover, independent cluster analyses revealed three clusters of reading patterns based on eye movements in both languages. Corresponding reading patterns emerged in both languages that were similarly and significantly associated with performance and motivational-affective variables. They explained more variance among students in these variables than between the languages alone. Our analyses show that eye movements of students during reading differ between the two languages, but very similar reading patterns exist in both languages. This result supports the assumption that the language alone is not a sufficient explanation for differences in students' mathematical achievement, but that reading patterns are more strongly related to performance.

Mathematical argumentation skills (MAS) are considered an important outcome of mathematics learning, particularly in secondary and tertiary education. As MAS are complex, an effective way of supporting their acquisition may require combining different scaffolds. However, how to combine different scaffolds is a delicate issue, as providing learners with more than one scaffold may be overwhelming, especially when these scaffolds are presented at the same time in the learning process and when learners' individual learning prerequisites are suboptimal. The present study therefore investigated the effects of the presentation sequence of introducing two scaffolds (collaboration script first vs. heuristic worked examples first) and the fading of the primarily presented scaffold (fading vs. no fading) on the acquisition of dialogic and dialectic MAS of participants of a preparatory mathematics course at university. In addition, we explored how prior knowledge and working memory capacity moderated the effects. Overall, 108 university freshmen worked in dyads on mathematical proof tasks in four treatment sessions. Results showed no effects of the presentation sequence of the collaboration script and heuristic worked examples on dialogic and dialectic MAS. Yet, fading of the initially introduced scaffold had a positive main effect on dialogic MAS. Concerning dialectic MAS, fading the collaboration script when it was presented first was most effective for learners with low working memory capacity. The collaboration script might be appropriate to initially support dialectic MAS, but might be overwhelming for learners with lower working memory capacity when combined with heuristic worked examples later on.
