2. Studying Adolescent Information Behavior in the Context of Making Everyday Life Decisions: Methodological Issues, Concerns, and Possible Solutions

Abstract

This paper presents the main methodological issues met with during the research on adolescent everyday life information behavior in the context of making informed decisions, which was carried out in Croatia from 2018 to 2020. It does not focus on the research results, but rather on the methodological issues and concerns that had occurred stemming from the specific life period of the population being investigated, and on the ways the researchers delt with them. They are offered as potentially useful for consideration to those who will investigate adolescent information behavior in other contexts. Six main methodological dilemmas arose while planning the design of research methodology coming out from six questions: what would be the appropriate research approach and design to investigate adolescent information behavior in the context of making informed everyday life decisions, what would be the developmentally appropriate way to investigate the phenomena, how to gain access to the potential adolescent research participants, how to negotiate an adult researcher's position when interacting with adolescents, how to get adolescent participants' trust needed to collect rich data and what ethical issues need to be considered. We offer an overview of the dilemmas and concerns, as well as the ways they were dealt with, acknowledging the contribution of those scholars who had responded to similar challenges in the past.

Abstract

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Literacy and Reading Section is trying to help librarians address the question: "How can librarians effectively promote literacy and reading?" This guide is IFLA's second publication aimed specifically at librarians and related organizations who want to find ways to foster literacy within the global society. The section's first publication, the brochure "Guidelines for Library-Based Literacy Programs: Some Practical Suggestions" (2007; See at: http://archive.ifla.org/VII/s33/project/literacy.htm), described specific ways that librarians and their partners can become involved in literacy, emphasizing the hosting of literacy promotion events at libraries and the development by libraries of resources useful to literacy and reading promotion. Using "Research to Promote Literacy and Reading in Libraries" extends the first brochure by focusing on the importance of wisely consuming, conducting and applying research conducted by librarians and their partners in order to promote literacy and reading. The aims of this new brochure are threefold: (1) to encourage librarians to use research in their literacy and reading promotion efforts; (2) to encourage other organizations that promote literacy and reading to make use of relevant research in their own promotional activities; and (3) to encourage librarians and other organizations to conduct action and assessment research.

Abstract

Motivation and Background: Information Literacy (IL) is “the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning” (American Library Association, 2016). IL as a social key competence is particularly essential in post-secondary education and research. According to many studies (e.g. Katz, 2007; Rubinić, Stričević, & Juric, 2013), student’s information literacy levels are generally low. Accordingly, in November 2016 the EU project ILO was started with the aim to develop, evaluate and disseminate a multilingual Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for developing information literacy focusing on higher education students. Expected Outcome: MOOCs are online courses with no entry barriers aiming at unlimited participation. The ILO project will at first concentrate on information literacy elements which are relevant for all subjects/disciplines. Examples for such general information literacy elements are Boolean operators, basic principles in knowledge organization, or basic knowledge of copyright law. IL also covers subject-specific elements, so the project will demonstrate the applicability of the generic information literacy MOOC to two exemplary disciplines: Business Administration and Psychology. A major shortcoming of current IL courses is the lack of self-assessment components. Therefore, a central innovative approach of our MOOC will be the implementation of technology based assessment components which allow students to get feedback on their learning success and hints on how to improve. A special aspect of the project concerns offering this content to six European cultural and language groups: English, German, Spanish, Catalan, Slovenian and Croatian. By addressing three of the largest language groups in Europe, the MOOC will be available to many citizens. Moreover, it will be one of the first MOOCs available in Slovenian and Croatian and as such provide a new innovative model for MOOC development in these two language areas. The multilingual approach will not only consider formal translation but also cultural-specific differences in the various realizations. The project will strongly endeavor to evaluate the MOOC in several phases and with different methods. Abstract

Las Bibliotecas de la Sección para Niños y Adultos Jóvenes de IFLA, publicaron Pautas para los Servicios Bibliotecarios para Niños en 2003. La entusiasta recepción de este documento, motivó a todas las secciones de la División III a cooperar en la publicación de Pautas de los Servicios Bibliotecarios para Bebés e Infantes en 2007. Investigaciones ligadas a importantes experiencias de alfabetización en niños de 0 a 3 años, sirvieron de premisa para que, en particular, las bibliotecas públicas reconozcan su habilidad para proveer materiales de calidad, programas y servicios a este público y a sus padres y tutores. Enlazar la información sobre desarrollo cerebral con los elementos de la narración en el regazo, demuestra el papel vital que los bibliotecarios pueden desempeñar en el desarrollo de habilidades de alfabetización y "formación de lectores". Abstract

La section IFLA des bibliothèques pour enfants et adolescents a édité en 2003 des recommandations concernant les services offerts dans les bibliothèques pour enfants. L'accueil enthousiaste qu'a reçu ce document a amené toutes les sections de la Division III à participer en 2007 à l'édition de recommandations concernant les services offerts en bibliothèque aux bébés et aux enfants en bas âge. Les recherches montrant l'importance de l'expérience de la lecture pour les enfants de la naissance à 3 ans a permis aux bibliothèques publiques en particulier, de mieux comprendre qu'il est important de mettre à disposition de livres et autres supports de qualité, d'organiser des programmes d'animation et des services adaptés à ce jeune public et à leurs parents et aux adultes qui en ont la charge. Etablir un lien entre les étapes de développement du cerveau avec ce qui entre en jeu lors d'une heure du conte « sur les genoux », montre bien que les bibliothécaires peuvent jouer un rôle essentiel dans le développement des capacités de lecture et former les futurs lecteurs. IFLA's Libraries for Children and Young Adult Section published Guidelines for Children's Libraries Services in 2003. The enthusiastic reception of this document, motivated all of the sections of Division III to cooperate in publishing Guidelines for Library Services to Babies and Toddlers in 2007. Research related to the importance of literacy experiences for children from birth to age 3 served as the premise for public libraries in particular, to recognize their ability to provide quality materials, programs and services for this young audience, along with their parents and caregivers. Linking the brain development information with the elements of a lapsit storytime demonstrates the vital role librarians can play in developing literacy skills and "raising readers." Abstract

La Sección de Bibliotecas para Niños y Jóvenes Adultos de IFLA celebra este año su 50 aniversario. Fue fundada en 1955 para promover y apoyar el desarrollo de los servicios bibliotecarios para los niños y los jóvenes adultos. Las numerosas actividades de la Sección durante los últimos cincuenta años incluyen la organización de seminarios y la implementación de programas de conferencias, la organización de pre/post conferencias, la distribución de publicaciones y pautas, la supervisión de proyectos y el establecimiento de redes. Las metas estratégicas de la Sección para el futuro están basadas en el derecho de cada niño al acceso a la información. Sus actividades están relacionadas con la promoción y estimulación de todos los tipos de alfabetizaciones para todos los niños y los adultos jóvenes, sobre todo de las habilidades requeridas por la nueva era tecnológica, y al desarrollo de la cooperación para el enriquecimiento e intercambio de recursos. El intercambio y la conexión en red pueden considerarse cruciales para el trabajo de la Sección que se esfuerza por ser un foro internacional para el intercambio de conocimientos, experiencias, ideas y proyectos. Abstract

La Section IFLA des bibliothèques pour enfants et adolescents fête son cinquantième anniversaire cette année. Elle a été créée en 1955 pour promouvoir et encourager le développement de sections pour enfants et adolescents dans les bibliothèques. Parmi les nombreuses activités qu'elle a menées ces cinquante dernières années, on peut citer l'organisation de séminaires et l'élaboration des programmes des conférences, la préparation de pre- et post conférences, la mise en oeuvre de Recommandations, de publications, de projets et des mises en réseau. Les objectifs futurs de la section s'appuient sur le droit qu'a chaque enfant d'accéder à l'information. Ses activités sont liées à la promotion et à l'encouragement de tous les modes d'accès à la lecture pour l'ensemble des enfants et adolescents, ainsi que des aptitudes requises tout particulièrement par les nouvelles technologies de notre temps et du développement de partenariats pour l'enrichissement et l'échange de ressources. Partager et mettre en réseau peut être considéré comme crucial pour le travail de la section étant donné qu'elle cherche à être un forum international pour l'échange de savoirs, expériences, idées et projets. Elle vise également à être un forum de discussion, de coopération et de développement et cherche à établir des réseaux d'information sur les sections pour enfants et adolescents à travers le monde. Abstract

The article focuses on the initiatives of Croatian public libraries to offer activities in relation to pre-school children's reading. It stresses the concept of playing activities as the first media of communication between a child and a library. It describes the IGROTEKA and the IGRAONICA programs developed by the Medvescak Public Library in Zagreb, Croatia. The programs' aims include to strengthen reading habits in the family and to increase the quality of life in the local community.

Abstract

The article reports that recently the Mecivescak Public Library (MPL) in Zagreb, Croatia, was faced with poor interest from young adults for library services in general. me Mecivescak Public Library is one of the public libraries in Zagreb whose numerous innovations in the last few decades have had a huge impact on the theory and practice of public librarianship in Croatia. It is the first public library in Croatia that has computerized its operations and developed special pro- grams for preschoolers; and it is also the first public library that has set up a special services department for teenagers.
