Abstract

The ATLAS upgrade detector foreseen at the phase 2 upgrade of LHC requires a complete new inner detector using silicon pixel and strip detectors. For both technologies, a specific mechanical and thermal design is required. Such a design may use soft thermal interfaces such as grease between the various parts. One foreseeable use would be between the cooling pipe and the thermal block allowing the strip modules to be decoupled from the mechanical and cooling structure. This note describes the technique used and the results obtained when characterizing a few grease samples. The results have been compared with thermal FEA simulations. A thermal conductivity measurement for each sample could be extracted from the measurements, with a systematic uncertainty of less than 6%. Some samples were irradiated to the expected fluence at sLHC and their resulting thermal conductivity compared with the non-irradiated samples.

Abstract

Ξ− interactions in hydrogen and deuterium are studied close to the forward direction using the CERN charged hyperon beam. The inclusive production of ∑*−(1385),Ξ−,Ξ*0(1530),Ξ*−(1700),Ξ*−(1830), and Ω− is observed, as well as an enhancement in theΞ−π+ channel at 1940 MeV/c2. The momentum distributions and the production cross sections are measured for ∑*−(1385),Ξ−,Ξ*0(1530), and Ω−.

Abstract

In an experiment using the CERN SPS hyperon beam, we have measured the cross sections for inclusive production of Ξ0 (accompanied by a charged particle), Ξ(1530)- and Ξ(1530)0 in Ξ--beryllium collisions at 116 GeV/c. All differential cross sections are found to be well described by the from (1−xF)n exp (−bpT2) over the whole accessible kinematical region (xF>0.3). The invariant production spectra for Ξ0, Ξ(1530)- and Ξ(1530)0, as well as those for Ξ-, and Ω- (obtained previously from the same data), are compared to theoretical predictions deduced from a two-component quark-diquark cascade model.

Abstract

In a experiment at the CERN SPS charged hyperon beam using incident ?-, we have obtained evidence for the production of two O* resonances decaying into ?-p+K-, with the following parameters:M1=2251±12,G1=48±20 MeV/c2, 78 ±23 events, andM2=2284±12,G2=26±23 MeV/c2 45±10 events. The first state is also observed as a 4.2s effect in a subsample which contains an additionalK+ orK0 in the final state. Production cross sections and branching ratios to ?*K- and ?-K* are presented.

Abstract

In an experiment at the CERN-SPS charged hyperon beam, we have investigated the inclusive " and " final states formed in ?- Be interactions. In the " channel, we observe a signal at 1826 MeV/c2 which can be identified with the known ?(1820) resonance. We determine its mass and width to be:M=1826±4 MeV/c2, ?=12±14 MeV/c2. A moment analysis is consistent with a spin of 3/2 and indicates a negative parity for this spin assignment. Also in the " channel, we observe a 3.6s signal with the following parameters:M=1963±5 MeV/c2, ?=25±15 MeV/c2. This state, which we call ?(1960), is not observed in the " channel, leading to an upper limit on the ratio of partial widths " of 2.3 (90% confidence level). A moment analysis of the " final state indicates a spin of 5/2 or greater in the natural spin-parity series 5/2+, 7/2-, etc.

Abstract

The cross sections for Ξ− and Ω− inclusive production in Ξ− Be collisions at 116 GeV/c have been measured in the kinematic domain [0.1F<0.9, 0T<1.7 GeV/c]. The integrated cross sections per nucleon are found to be about twice as large as in Ξ−p collisions. The invariant cross sections increase by a factor of 70 for the Ξ−s and of 100 for the Ω−s between the central region (xF∼0.2) and the projectile fragmentation region (xF∼0.8). In the central region, they have about the same magnitude as the ones for Ξ− and Ω− inclusive production inp nucleon collisions. The Ξ− and Ω− polarisations have been measured over the same kinematic domain and are found to be compatible with zero.

Abstract

In an experiment carried out in the CERN SPS hyperon beam, the diffractive dissociation of incidentΞ− hyperons into ΛK− andΞ−π+π− final states has been observed. Several resonances are seen in the final states, including the well known Ξ(1820) which appears in both channels, and the Ξ(1680) which appears as a narrow state (M=1691.1±2.7 MeV/c2, Γ<8 MeV/c2) in the ΛK− channel and possibly also in the Ξππ channel.

Abstract

Results are presented from experiment WA62, which searched for charmed strange baryon states produced inS- interactions in the SPS charged hyperon beam at CERN. Properties of theA+ (csu) baryon at 2.46 GeV/c2 are summarized and upper limits are given for decay branching ratios into various channels. Three events observed at 2.74 GeV/c2 in the?-K-p+p+ mass spectrum are interpreted as the first evidence for theT0 baryon with quark content css. Results of a search for theA0 (csd), the isospin partner of theA+, are presented. The results are discussed in the context of current theoretical understanding, and a comparison with other experiments on hadroproduction of charmed baryons is made.

Abstract

TheΞ-p differential elastic cross section has been measured in the SPS hyperon beam at 102 and 135 GeV/c. In the range 0.01<−<0.42(GeV/c)2, thet distributions are found to be compatible with the formA exp(Bt) whereB is 7.7±0.4(GeV/c)−2 at 102 GeV/c and 8.2 ±0.5(GeV/c)−2 at 135 GeV/c. The corresponding total elastic cross sections areσel=4.9±0.7 mb andσel=5.6±0.9 mb, respectively. These results are compared with the predictions of phenomenological models.

In an experiment in the CERN-SPS charged-hyperon beam, the main Omega /sup -/ decay branching ratios have been measured to be Gamma ( Omega /sup -/ to Lambda K/sup -/)/ Gamma (all)=0.686+or-0.013, Gamma ( Omega /sup -/ to Xi /sup 0/ pi /sup -/)/ Gamma (all) =0.234+or-0.013, Gamma ( Omega /sup -/ to Xi /sup -/ pi /sup 0/)/ Gamma (all)=0.080+or-0.008. The relative branching ratio of the two Xi pi modes provides a test of the Delta I=1/2 rule in decuplet-octet transitions. A search has also been made for the rare decay modes Omega /sup -/ to Lambda pi /sup -/, Omega /sup -/ to Xi /sup -/ gamma , Omega /sup -/ to Xi /sup -/ pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/ and Omega /sup -/ to Xi /sup 0/e/sup -/ nu . Abstract

In an experiment at the CERN-SPS charged-hyperon beam, a sample of 2500 Omega /sup -/ to Lambda K/sup -/ decays has been collected at Omega /sup -/ momenta at 98.5 and 115 GeV/c. The Omega /sup -/ lifetime is found to be tau /sub Omega /=(0.822+or-0.028)*10/sup -10/ s. (15 refs).
