1. Rough volatility models : small-time asymptotics and calibration

Abstract

Inspired by the work of Al'os, Le ́on and Vives [ALV07] and Fukasawa [Fuk17], who showed that a volatility process driven by a fractional Brownian motion generates the power law at-the-money volatility skew observed in financial market data, Gatheral, Jaisson and Rosenbaum [GJR18a] spawned a class of models now known as rough volatility models. We study the asymptotic behaviour of such models, and investigate how convolutional neural networks can be used for their calibration. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction. We begin with implied volatility, and then intro- duce a number of model classes, starting with local volatility models and ending with rough volatility models, and discuss their associated asymptotic behaviour. We also introduce the theoretical tools used to prove the main results. In Chapter 2 we study the small-time behaviour of the rough Bergomi model, introduced by Bayer, Friz, and Gatheral [BFG16]. We prove a pathwise large deviations principle for a small-noise version of the model, and use this result to establish the small-time behaviour of the rescaled log stock price process. This, in turn, allows us to characterise the small-time implied volatility behaviour of the model. Using the same theoretical framework, we are also able to establish the small-time implied volatility behaviour of the lognormal fSABR model of Akahori, Song, and Wang [ASW17]. In Chapter 3 we present small-time implied volatility asymptotics for realised variance (RV) options for a number of (rough) stochastic volatility models via a large deviations principle. We interestingly discover that these (rough) volatility models, together with others proposed in the literature, generate linear smiles around the money. We provide numerical results along with efficient and robust numerical recipes to compute the rate function; the backbone of our theoretical framework. Based on our results, we develop an approximation scheme for the density of the realised variance, which in turn allows the volatility swap density to be expressed in closed form. Lastly, we investigate different constructions of multi-factor models and how their construction affects the convexity of 4 the implied volatility smile. Remarkably, we identify a class of models that can generate non-linear smiles around-the-money. Additionally, we establish small-noise asymptotic behaviour of a general class of VIX options in the large strike regime. In Chapter 4, which is self-contained, we give an introduction to machine learning and neural networks. We investigate the use of convolutional neural networks to find the H ̈older exponent of simulated sample paths of the rough Bergomi model, a method which performs extremely well and is found to be robust when applied to trajectories of a fractional Brownian motion and an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. We then propose a novel calibration scheme for the rough Bergomi model based on our results.

We present small-time implied volatility asymptotics for Realised Variance (RV) and VIX options for a number of (rough) stochastic volatility models via large deviations principle. We provide numerical results along with efficient and robust numerical recipes to compute the rate function; the backbone of our theoretical framework. Based on our results, we further develop approximation schemes for the density of RV, which in turn allows to express the volatility swap in close-form. Lastly, we investigate different constructions of multi-factor models and how each of them affects the convexity of the implied volatility smile. We contextualise this as a calibration problem, thereby providing a very practical and useful application.

9. Psyche Project Implementation During the COVID Pandemic

Abstract

In January 2017, “Psyche: Journey to a Metal World” was selected for implementation as part of NASA’s Discovery program. The Psyche mission will utilize electric propulsion with SPT-140 Hall thrusters to rendezvous and orbit the metal-rich asteroid (16) Psyche, in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The Psyche spacecraft requires no chemical propulsion and, when launched in 2022, will be the first mission to use Hall thrusters beyond lunar orbit. The Psyche spacecraft is a hybrid development with Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)-provided deep-space avionics and communications equipment mounted on a high-heritage MAXAR (formerly Space Systems Loral) Solar-Electric Propulsion (SEP) Chassis, based on their 1300 series of GEO communications satellites. The spacecraft is equipped to support a suite of science instruments, as well as a demonstration of the Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) technology. The spacecraft has sufficient onboard resources, autonomy, redundancy, and operability to complete a 3.5-year cruise to 16 Psyche, followed by a 20-month campaign of science investigations while orbiting the asteroid.The mission’s early concept design and progress through Preliminary Design Review (PDR) has been described in previous work. The paper will cover the recent mission progress from the Critical Design Review (CDR) through the start of Spacecraft Environmental Testing, which took place during the COVID pandemic.The authors will highlight the successful remote collaboration between the major partners: ASU, JPL, MAXAR, and the Payload teams that led to the initiation of the Assembly, Test, Launch, Operations Phase (ATLO) in early March 2021. Emphasis will be placed on the effects that the COVID-19 pandemic had on the work environment over the last 16+ months, including challenges to delivery of flight hardware and test equipment. In addition to the COVID-19 challenges, other significant anomalies discovered during design and test will be described along with any impacts to the overall science capability of the mission.

I recorded Ray Charles in 1951 and in 2013 I have a CD out of Latimore singing Ray Charles. Almost all his contemporaries - the men who founded Atlantic, Chess, Modern, Vee Jay and other pioneering independent R&B labels - were no longer of this world and Henry had tales he wanted to tell. Oddly, TK Records hasn't been venerated or reissued in the same way Stax, Motown and other R&B labels have. From here he built his empire: in the 70s he scored huge international hits with Rock Your Baby, Clean Up Woman, (That's The Way) I Like It and Ring My Bell. [Extracted from the article]
