Abstract

BackgroundMost psycho-social interventions contain multiple components. Practitioners often vary in their implementation of different intervention components. Caregiver coaching is a multicomponent intervention for young autistic children that is highly effective but poorly implemented in community-based early intervention (EI). Previous research has shown that EI providers' intentions, and the determinants of their intentions, to implement caregiver coaching vary across components. Organizational culture and climate likely influence these psychological determinants of intention by affecting beliefs that underlie attitudes, norms, and self-efficacy to implement an intervention. Research in this area is limited, which limits the development of theoretically driven, multilevel implementation strategies to support multi-component interventions. This mixed methods study evaluated the relationships among organizational leadership, culture and climate, attitudes, norms, self-efficacy, and EI providers' intentions to implement the components of caregiver coaching.MethodsWe surveyed 264 EI providers from 37 agencies regarding their intentions and determinants of intentions to use caregiver coaching. We also asked questions about the organizational culture, climate, and leadership in their agencies related to caregiver coaching. We used multilevel structural equation models to estimate associations among intentions, psychological determinants of intentions (attitudes, descriptive norms, injunctive norms, and self-efficacy), and organizational factors (implementation climate and leadership). We conducted qualitative interviews with 36 providers, stratified by strength of intentions to use coaching. We used mixed-methods analysis to gain an in-depth understanding of the organization and individual-level factors.ResultsThe associations among intentions, psychological determinants of intentions, and organizational factors varied across core components of caregiver coaching. Qualitative interviews elucidated how providers describe the importance of each component. For example, providers' attitudes toward coaching caregivers and their perceptions of caregivers' expectations for service were particularly salient themes related to their use of caregiver coaching.ConclusionResults highlight the importance of multi-level strategies that strategically target individual intervention components as well as organization-level and individual-level constructs. This approach holds promise for improving the implementation of complex, multicomponent, psychosocial interventions in community-based service systems.

Abstract

Clinicians' beliefs about an intervention's fit with an individual family influence whether they use it with that family. The factors that influence clinicians' decisions to implement evidence-based practices for young autistic children have yet to be evaluated systematically. These factors may partially account for the significant disparities in quality of and access to early intervention. We examined disparities in clinicians' reported use of caregiver coaching, an evidence-based practice, with families from minoritized or structurally marginalized groups, and the perceived reasons for those disparities, to assess the factors that influence clinicians' use of caregiver coaching. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 36 early intervention clinicians from publicly funded early intervention agencies in two distinct geographic regions in the United States. Clinicians identified social and structural factors, including perceived family characteristics and stigma, that influenced their beliefs about the fit of coaching with families from minoritized or structurally marginalized groups. These findings point to the presence of beliefs that likely exacerbate disparities in access to evidence-based practices and reduce the quality of care for minoritized families of young autistic children. These findings highlight the need to develop and deploy equity-focused implementation strategies to improve both access to and quality of evidence-based practices for young autistic children from minoritized groups. Abstract

Exposure therapy for anxiety and related disorders is the psychological intervention with the strongest support for its efficacy and effectiveness to date. Yet, it is the least used evidence-based intervention in routine clinical practice, with a long-acknowledged public relations problem. Despite a wealth of research aimed at improving uptake of exposure, exposure's marketing and branding remains an untapped target. We first introduce principles from the marketing literature to propose that the field take steps toward a rebranding and repackaging of exposure therapy to support efforts to implement it widely. Second, we present preliminary data on clinician preferences for the use of alternative terminology developed to be more palatable and marketable - 'Supported Approach of Feared Experiences - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (SAFE-CBT)' - compared to traditional terminology. This initial survey indicated that most clinicians preferred use of the SAFE-CBT term when talking to patients, whereas only a minority preferred it for use among training clinicians. 17. Quantifying debris supply and debris flux in deglaciating mountain glacier catchments

Abstract

Debris-covered glaciers are found in most glaciated regions on Earth. The presence of a supraglacial debris cover enables these glaciers to persist for longer periods of time at lower elevations than their clean-ice counterparts. While the processes that govern the behaviour of debris-covered glaciers have been the focus of contemporary research, there exists scant quantitative information pertaining to the supply of sub-aerial debris and the subsequent evolution of supraglacial debris cover thickness through time. This thesis therefore aims to quantify sub-aerial debris supply and supraglacial debris thickness evolution in a deglaciating Alpine catchment. This is achieved through in situ fieldwork and remote sensing workflows, paving the way for facilitating a quantitative understanding of key debris covered glacier processes, and remote estimation of debris thickness changes at glaciers where field studies are sparse. This study also contributes knowledge towards the development and refinement of next-generation debris-covered glacier numerical models. Firstly, the sub-aerial debris supply was quantified using high resolution terrestrial laser scanning obtained over two field campaigns at Miage Glacier. Approximately 700,000 m2 of rock slope was scanned at both the start and the end of the 2019 ablation season, representing the most extensive known rock wall survey undertaken in a deglaciating catchment. Over a survey interval of ∼90 days, which encompassed most of the 2019 ablation season, 2,582 rockfalls across eight orders of magnitude (10−3-104) were detected using a novel processing workflow. In sum, these rockfalls represented a potential debris addition to the glacier surface of 29,271.11 m3, with ∼28,018 m3 originating from a single rockfall event. When evenly spread out over the predicted rockfall runout area, this equates to a local thickening of 0.04 m m−2 (inclusive of the large rockfall event), or 0.002 m m−2 (not considering the large rockfall event). A survey area erosion rate of 0.462 mm a−1 was estimated, and the impact of volume estimation method was shown to impact this rate significantly, producing estimates between 0.115-1.145 mm a−1. There was a strong preference for rockfalls from a NE aspect, likely reflecting aspect-related controls on total solar radiation receipt, which in turn dictate rock wall temperature fluctuations, and ultimately rock damage. Magnitude-frequency analysis shows that smaller rockfalls are a more significant contributor to the sub-aerial debris supply throughout the study area, and slopes located within 50 m vertically of the contemporary glacier surface generate more high-magnitude events than higher-elevation slopes. Secondly, reanalysis data was used in conjunction with a supraglacial energy balance model to estimate statistically significant debris thickness. ERA-5 reanalysis data were shown to be superior to NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data in forcing the energy balance model to estimate debris thickness, when compared with automatic weather station data at Miage Glacier and Khumbu Glacier. Using this remote sensing-based workflow, statistically significant debris thickness changes over an ∼20 year period were reconstructed for three debris-covered glaciers at different stages in their so called 'life-cycle'. These results represent the first known remotesensing- derived estimate of glacier-scale debris thickness changes. Finally, a conceptual model of a debris-covered glacier life-cycle was proposed, which is supported by novel quantitative estimates of key processes and fluxes. A median debris thickness increase of 0.01 m per pixel was estimated at Miage Glacier between 2005-2016. This increase equated to an addition of ∼2,165 m3 of debris per year over the ablation zone. Excluding the large rockfall event that alone contributed over 28,000 m3 of debris to the surface of the glacier, reconstructed rockfall events contributed up to 1,252 m3 of debris to the surface of the glacier over the 2019 ablation season. By reconciling these two numbers, rockfall from bedrock slopes was estimated to contribute ∼57% of the total debris flux directly to the ablation zone of Miage Glacier, whilst so-called 'indirect' sources such as englacial melt-out and debris remobilisation are hypothesised to contribute the remaining total debris increase. These results form the beginning of a new quantitative framework which uses novel data derived from cutting edge and complementary Earth observation technologies, implemented within a robust and transparent workflow, to shed light on key sediment fluxes that are crucial for improving understanding the evolution of debriscovered glacier landsystems.

21. How do psychological practitioners construct the meaning of parental alienation : a social constructionist approach

Abstract

There is growing recognition of parental alienation [PA] amongst family courts and social workers within the United Kingdom [UK]. PA primarily occurs in family custody disputes, where there is manipulation of a child by one parent against the other. This study was developed to address the complexity of the phenomenon by exploring how aware psychological practitioners are of PA, how they meaningfully construct PA, and the implications this may have for clinical practice. A qualitative approach was utilised using a social constructionist grounded theory [SCGT]. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews in two stages, with eight psychological practitioners (including one negative case analysis). Data gathering and analysis followed the grounded theory [GT] methodology. The analysis of data reflects how psychological practitioners utilised 'Conceptual Manoeuvring' to develop an emerging interpretation of the meaning of PA. Three key sub-processes were identified: (1) using pre-existing knowledge to open a new interpretative space; (2) co-constructing parental alienation; and (3) becoming aware. The analysis found that there are multiple ways in which participants co-constructed the meaning of PA, which had multiple implications for the consideration of psychological interventions and practice. As part of conceptually manoeuvring PA, all participants were able to recall possible cases of PA in their clinical work with individuals. However, for seven participants, their understanding of PA was initially based on assumption, due to an identified lack of self and others' awareness. This appeared to raise uncertainty when considering relevant psychological theory and intervention for PA; but despite this, counselling approaches appeared more favourable. It was indicated by seven participants that due to the relational aspect to understanding PA, counselling approaches (such as Humanistic and Psychodynamic) appeared more favourable in comparison to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy [CBT] approaches. However, some CBT interventions (such as cognitive restructuring) were considered helpful. A negative case analysis was purposefully sought to strengthen the GT following interviews with seven participants. The negative case analysis reflected similar conceptual manoeuvring to construct PA; however, their construction of PA and consideration of therapeutic interventions provided richer insight into the phenomenon and appropriate interventions. The implications of the research appear to highlight the gap in awareness of PA among psychological practitioners within the UK, a need for defining terminology, the construct of PA, and identification of evidence-based treatment. This research has contributed towards developing awareness of PA and provides recommendations for future research.

23. Development of a Self-Report Scale to Assess Children's Perceived Physical Literacy

Abstract

Background: The construct of physical literacy is gaining traction internationally and yet measurement of physical literacy is in its infancy. This paper describes the development of a pictorial child report scale of perceived physical literacy based on the comprehensive Australian Physical Literacy Framework, which includes 30 elements within four domains (physical, psychological, cognitive and social). Methods: An expert reference committee with academic and industry representatives from physical education, sport and education was formed to provide input to each stage of the process. Qualitative research methods were used to (a) determine a character that was gender neutral, not representative of a particular race or ethnicity and appealing to children, and (b) the content (i.e. relationship between item images, wording and format with the intended construct) and response processes (i.e. interpretation of items) of the Physical Literacy in Children Questionnaire (PL-C Quest). A total of 17 children aged 4-12 years were interviewed as part of the study. Results: A 'bunny' character was preferred by children. Overall, children interpreted most images as intended by the researchers, and, in many cases, without having to hear the words that went with the images. Some of the image scenarios were amended and redrawn according to the suggestions received from children and the expert reference group. Discussion: This study has provided qualitative evidence based on the content of the PL-C Quest elements and domains, on the ways respondents understand, and interpret the items. This is the first step towards the development and testing of a pictorial instrument to comprehensively measure children's self-perceived physical literacy.

Abstract

Human land use threatens global biodiversity and compromises multiple ecosystem functions critical to food production. Whether crop yield-related ecosystem services can be maintained by a few dominant species or rely on high richness remains unclear. Using a global database from 89 studies (with 1475 locations), we partition the relative importance of species richness, abundance, and dominance for pollination; biological pest control; and final yields in the context of ongoing land-use change. Pollinator and enemy richness directly supported ecosystem services in addition to and independent of abundance and dominance. Up to 50% of the negative effects of landscape simplification on ecosystem services was due to richness losses of service-providing organisms, with negative consequences for crop yields. Maintaining the biodiversity of ecosystem service providers is therefore vital to sustain the flow of key agroecosystem benefits to society.

32. Who Gets Coached? A Qualitative Inquiry into Community Clinicians' Decisions to Use Caregiver Coaching

Abstract

Clinicians' beliefs about an intervention's fit with an individual family influence whether they use it with that family. The factors that influence clinicians' decisions to implement evidence-based practices for young autistic children have yet to be evaluated systematically. These factors may partially account for the significant disparities in quality of and access to early intervention. We examined disparities in clinicians' reported use of caregiver coaching, an evidence-based practice, with families from minoritized or structurally marginalized groups, and the perceived reasons for those disparities, to assess the factors that influence clinicians' use of caregiver coaching. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 36 early intervention clinicians from publicly funded early intervention agencies in two distinct geographic regions in the United States. Clinicians identified social and structural factors, including perceived family characteristics and stigma, that influenced their beliefs about the fit of coaching with families from minoritized or structurally marginalized groups. These findings point to the presence of beliefs that likely exacerbate disparities in access to evidence-based practices and reduce the quality of care for minoritized families of young autistic children. These findings highlight the need to develop and deploy equity-focused implementation strategies to improve both access to and quality of evidence-based practices for young autistic children from minoritized groups.
