A large number of manuscripts of David Qimḥi’s Dictionary of Roots, the Sefer ha-Shorashim, completed circa 1205, have formulae of two lines at the end of some of the twenty-two chapters corresponding to the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. The original text was very sober, “The letter alef is finished and I will begin the letter bet”, as it appears in one of the earliest witnesses. Twenty-four codices contain mentions that are more elaborate. The variants of these exogenous elements were collected and classified in order to reconstitute or at least consolidate the manuscript tradition of the Sefer ha-shorashim. Beyond this first objective, it was possible to identify the probable region of original use by correlating the use of a formula with the location and dating of its attestations.

6. Author’s variants in Vicente Riva Palacio’s brief narratives. An stemmatics proposal for nineteenth-century author’s philology

- Abstract
This article analyzes variants in three short stories by Vicente Riva Palacio (1832-1896). In order to understand the nature and sense of the textual modifications, which often respond to 19th-century Mexican literary tradition specific demands on publication and reprints, I adopt the terminology of Giorgio Pasquali’s “author’s philology”. I divide the variants into two categories: ideological and literary. To more efficiently reveal the genealogical family of the stories under scrutiny, I conducted in parallel the philological exercise of establishing a stemma codicum adapting the methodology of textual criticism.

- Abstract
The Llibre de les dones was one of the most successful works of Francesc Eiximenis. Although this book had not the same diffusion that other works such as the Llibre dels àngels or the Vida de Jesucrit, it made a big fortune, as proves the fact that not only six manuscripts and one incunabulum have been preserved, but also some fragmentary copies, a Spanish translation transmitted through eight testimonies and an adapted version called Carro de las donas. In spite of the book's success, since not long ago it didn't exist any study of the Catalan textual tradition. In this paper are shown the results of the ecdotic analysis on the first hundred chapters of the book and it is proposed a possible stemma codicum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Dvořák's Mass in D was commissioned by the Czech architect and visionary Josef Hlávka for the consecration of the chapel of his mansion in Lužany; the premiére of the original version of the work was given at a private service on 11 September, 1887. However, the focus of the present article is on a version of the work subsequently prepared by Dvořák, incorporating an added part for violoncello and bass, and submitted by him to the publishing house of Novello. Though it came to be overshadowed by the later orchestration of the work, it possesses virtues worth cherishing. Haig Utidjian conducted the first modern revival of this version in Cologne on 8 July, 2014 and is currently preparing a critical edition for publication. A thorough critical investigation of all extant manuscript sources (some hitherto neglected) is seen to shed light on the composer's thinking and to help clarify his intentions more generally. 19. CONTAMINAZIONE IN FILOLOGIA.
- Author

BELLONI, Gino
- Abstract
In the field of Textual Criticism, the dependence of an exemplar from another is a necessary prerequisite when drawing a family tree or stemma codicum. In its absence, it is impossible to try and reconstruct a text, that is to re-establish the original, or rather establish a version as close as possible to the original. If a scribe did not copy his text from a single exemplar only, but made also use of another, even though partially or only for individual variant readings, the ideal process of reconstruction of the original text is interrupted and the interference may hinder the re-constitution of its family tree. This interference is known as contamination. The phenomenon has proved to be more and more frequent in the tradition of classical texts and is still a debated problem to scholars in classical and modern philology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Not only literary students, but also well-known scholars share the idea that the reconstruction of a text is a routine job which leaves little room for creativity. After some 40 years during which I have edited or prepared the edition of works of Machiavelli ( Discorso intorno alla nostra lingua), Pietro Aretino ( Cortegiana) and Torquato Tasso ( Aminta), and 17 years devoted to the textual transmission and the text of Dante’s Commedia, I think that, except for the first phases of the job, textual editing requires almost constant critical thought and interpretation. I shall present a little series of examples, mostly from Dante’s Commedia, with cases ranging from decisions in the realm of accidentals to rather complicated choices among competing substantial readings and to the risky enterprise of emendation against all the witnesses of the work. While these examples can give an idea of the novelty of some solutions of my forthcoming edition (the introduction and Inferno will appear in the summer of 2021), in my view, they seem to confirm the opinion of the great classical philologist Giorgio Pasquali, for whom textual criticism isn’t mechanical; it is methodical.

The 36 G 27 manuscript of the Library of the Accademia dei Lincei e Corsiniana of Rome (= Linc), which transmits part of the third draft of the Comentum of Pietro Alighieri to the Divine Comedy, has never been collated before with the most famous Ottoboniano 2867 and Cassinese 512, nor placed in the stemma codicum. The contribution aims to fill this gap, demonstrating that the text of Linc is rather close to that of the Cassinese, given also the presence of common errors that confirm the presence of an antigraph common to the two manuscripts. In the end, a specimen of diplomatic-interpretative edition is proposed (from the XXIV canto of Inferno), with the addition of two bands of apparatus (critical and sources)., Il codice 36 G 27 della Biblioteca dell’Accademia dei Lincei e Corsiniana di Roma (= Linc), testimone parziale della terza redazione del Comentum di Pietro Alighieri alla Commedia, non è stato mai finora collazionato con i più noti Ottoboniano 2867 e Cassinese 512 né posto nello stemma. We propose a new stemma codicum for the manuscript tradition A of the commentary of Llama de amor viva by St. John of the Cross. Such genealogical tree presupposes some intense and not previously detected contamination phenomena, mainly within the largest family of testimonies. Furthermore, we examine the omissions by homoioteleuton both for a better individuation of contamination traces and for a general verification of the stemma.

- Abstract
The Liber gestorum of Pere Marsili is essential for tracing the stemma codicum of the Catalan text Llibre dels fets, and for establishing the archetype of the Catalan text, as it shows variants of the original Catalan text. A stemma codicum of all versions of Llibre dels fets is proposed here for the first time, including all Catalan manuscripts and the Latin and Aragonese versions. The Latin text makes clear that the successive divisions in the stemma of the Catalan manuscript tradition are caused by simple scribal errors and not by different versions. Among the textual modifications are some dialectal variants, which can be explained by different types of copy.

The textual transmission of poetry does not have a unitary character. The theoretical methodology proposed by Pagès is base don this axiom, although this does not hold true in practice. It is necessary an individual study of each poem incorporated into a cancionero, because the traditions that each poem brings with it are diverse. Likewise, this paper demonstrates that material philology is essential for ecdotics and for the textual fixation.

The Corpus Aurelianum, constituted by the Origo gentis Romanae, the Liber de Vins illustribus urbis Romae, both anonymous works, and by Aurelius Victor's Liber de Caesaribus, has come down to us through two fifteenth-century manuscripts preserved at Oxford and Brussels. But there existed at the end of the sixteenth century a third markedly more ancient manuscript, the codex Metelli. For a few decades, the question of the relationship between those manuscripts has been set but has received no unanimous answer. Relying on a new collation of the two manuscripts and an examination of the three partial or complete editions of the corpus published by Andrew Schott in 1577, 1579 and 1609, the author has been able to collect a great many lessons, certain or likely, from the codex Metelli. A new stemma is put forward which shows that this codex is not the medieval archetype of the corpus, characterised by the interpolation of extracts from the Historia Miscella, but a copy of it another copy being at the origin of the two preserved manuscripts., Le corpus Aurelianum, constitué par l'Origo gentis Romanae, le Liber de vins illustribus urbis Romae, œuvres anonymes, ainsi que par le Liber de Caesaribus d'Aurélius Victor, nous a été transmis par deux manuscrits du 15e siècle conservés à Oxford et à Bruxelles. In relating the significance of the classical tradition in Byzantine civilisation and the extensive exchange between Byzantine literature and the classics, the author illuminates an example of the hermeneutical challenges facing the translators of Byzantine texts: the Exegesis in canonem iambicum de Pentecoste, Eustathius of Thessalonica’s last work. She cites and comments on several passages which echo Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, Plato, as well as the Bible, in an essay on the “allusive chromatism” of Eustathius’ writing, which mixes and subtly and freely masks his sources, thereby testing with a touch of malice and a certain taste for mystery, the learning and skill of both his Byzantine students, and modern exegetes.

A. In this paper, we model the ternary betweenness relation within the framework of the critical edition of texts. The editor must try to reconstruct as well as possible, starting from the various preserved manuscripts, the original manuscript as the author wrote it. The corpus is made up of many manuscripts which are copied from one another. To do so, it appears interesting to draw up a family tree of these manuscripts called stemma codicum. A manuscript B is between the manuscripts A and C, i.e. the manuscript C was copied starting from the manuscript B which itself was copied from A. This is this concept of betweenness by copy act which one wishes to model.
