Abstract

We investigate the hydrogen evolution activity in the dark and under illumination above the band gap of individual mono-, bi- and few-layer (bulk) MoS2 flakes. We demonstrate that the electrocatalytic activity of 2H-MoS2 immersed in 1 M H2SO4 increases with decreasing number of layers. For monolayers, we observe the highest exchange current density, which is one magnitude larger than in the bulk case. The onset potential scales with the number of layers, which is consistent with a previous report, suggesting that hopping transport across inter-layer barriers within the MoS2 flakes is responsible for this scaling. A specially designed micro-sized catalytic cell enables us to investigate individual MoS2 flakes with well-known geometry and edge-to-surface ratio. Taking these geometric parameters into account, we tentatively attribute the catalytic activity mainly to sulfur vacancies in the basal planes acting as active sites. The associated turn over frequencies (TOF) for mono- and bi-layer MoS2 yield values higher than 103 s−1 at an overpotential of −0.2 V vs. RHE. In view of light driven hydrogen evolution as a means of solar energy conversion, we investigate the photocatalytic activity of few-layer MoS2 under white light illumination.

Abstract

In this paper key aspects and several methods for modeling, simulation, optimization and control of the locomotion of humanoid robots and humans are discussed. Similarities and differences between walking and running of humanoid robots and humans are outlined. They represent several, different steps towards the ultimate goals of understanding and predicting human motion by validated simulation models and of developing humanoid robots with human like performance in walking and running. Numerical and experimental results are presented for model-based optimal control as well as for hardware-in-the-loop optimization of humanoid robot walking and for forward dynamics simulation and optimization of a human kicking motion. Abstract

The problem of finding and predicting muscle activations for free goal oriented or measured human motion is one of the basic problems in biomechanics. While currently inverse dynamics approaches are most commonly used for their computational efficiency, they can not handle the problem in its most general form. We here present computational methods that increase the computational efficiency of the forward dynamics approach by two orders of magnitude. Results are presented for a time optimal kicking motion and the analysis of a measured kicking motion. Abstract

Elasticity in conventionally built walking robots is an undesired sideeffect that is suppressed as much as possible because it makes control very hard and thus complex control algorithms must be used. The human motion apparatus, in contrast, shows a very high degree of flexibility with sufficient stability. In this research we investigate how compliance and damping can deliberately be used in humanoid robots to improve walking capabilities. A modular robot system consisting of rigid segments, joint modules and adjustable compliant cables spanning one or two joints is used to configure a human-like biped. In parallel, a simulation model of the robot was developed and analyzed. Walking motion is gained by oscillatory out-of-phase excitations of the hip joints. An optimization of the walking speed has been performed by improving the viscoelastic properties of the leg and identifying the appropriate hip control parameters. A good match was found between real robot experiments and numerical simulations. At higher speeds, transitions from walking to running are found in both the simulation as well as in the robot. Abstract

In the crystal structure of the bovine heart mitochondrial F(1)-ATPase (Abrahams, J. P., Leslie, A. G. W., Lutter, R., and Walker, J. E. (1994) Nature 370, 621-628), the two liganded beta subunits, one with MgAMP-PNP bound to the catalytic site (beta(T)) and the other with MgADP bound (beta(D)) have closed conformations. The empty beta subunit (beta(E)) has an open conformation. In beta(T) and beta(D), the distance between the carboxylate of beta-Asp(315) and the guanidinium of beta-Arg(337) is 3.0-4.0 A. These side chains are at least 10 A apart in beta(E). The alpha(3)(betaD311C/R333C)(3)gamma subcomplex of TF(1) with the corresponding residues substituted with cysteine has very low ATPase activity unless it is reduced prior to assay or assayed in the presence of dithiothreitol. The reduced subcomplex hydrolyzes ATP at 50% the rate of wild-type and is rapidly inactivated by oxidation by CuCl(2) with or without magnesium nucleotides bound to catalytic sites. Titration of the subcomplex with iodo[(14)C]acetamide after prolonged treatment with CuCl(2) in the presence or absence of 1 mM MgADP revealed nearly two free sulfhydryl groups/mol of enzyme. Therefore, one pair of introduced cysteines is located on a beta subunit that exists in the open or partially open conformation even when catalytic sites are saturated with MgADP. Since V(max) of ATP hydrolysis is attained when three catalytic sites of F(1) are saturated, the catalytic site that binds ATP must be closing as the catalytic site that releases products is opening.
