The southern coast of South Africa displays a highly dynamical climate as it is at the convergence of both the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, and it is located near the subtropical/temperate zone boundary with seasonal influence of easterlies/westerlies. The region hosts some key archeological sites with records of significant cognitive, technological and social developments. Reconstructions of the state and variability of past climate and environmental conditions around sites of archeological significance can provide crucial context for understanding the evolution of early humans. Here we present a short but high-resolution record of hydroclimate and temperature in South Africa. Our reconstructions are based on trace elements, calcite and fluid inclusion stable isotopes, and fluid inclusion microthermometry from a speleothem collected in Bloukrantz Cave, in the De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Western Cape region of South Africa. Our record covers the time period from 48.3 to 45.2 ka during Marine Isotope Stage 3. Both 𝛿18Oc and 𝛿 13Cc show strong variability and covary with Sr/Ca. This correlation suggests that the control on these proxies originates from internal cave processes such as Prior Calcite Precipitation, which we infer to be related to precipitation amount. The hydroclimate indicators furthermore suggest a shift towards overall drier conditions after 46 ka, coincident with a cooling in Antarctica and drier conditions in the eastern part of South Africa corresponding to the Summer Rainfall Zone. Fluid inclusion-based temperature reconstructions show good agreement between the oxygen isotope and microthermometry methods, and results from the latter display little variation throughout the record, with reconstructed temperatures close to the present-day cave temperature of 17.5 °C. Overall, the BL3 record thus suggests stable temperature from 48.3 to 45.2 ka whereas precipitation was variable with marked drier episodes on sub-millennial timescales.

In the past 100 years, a decreasing rainfall trend has been recorded on Romanian territory, a trend that continues today. Therefore, realistic estimation of the groundwater resources is crucial, especially for the rural communities lacking the economic power to use alternative sources of drinking water. The groundwater sources used by rural communities in Romania generally originate directly from caves, wells or springs with no proper evaluation of the water quality. Groundwater is exposed to different pollutants, as bats' guano in caves, fertilizers in agricultural areas or livestock (cattle, sheep, goats, etc.) farms on the surface. On the other hand, the water extracted directly from inside the caves is affecting groundwater ecosystems, highly vulnerable to any human impact and neglected by European legislation so far. The project aims to monitor, during two consecutive years, groundwater sources with different degrees of above- and underground pollution, from different regions of Romania. To achieve the goals of the project, a multidisciplinary monitoring strategy that will include measurements of hydrological, physico-chemical and biological (microbiology and aquatic invertebrates’ assessment) parameters alongside the quantification of radon and stable isotopes, rainfall or possible inflows of water. The specific outcomes of this project are: i) to test, develop and validate a new, more rapid and efficient method for monitoring and risk assessment of groundwater sources – and not only – by using molecular techniques, and propose this method to the water agencies in Romania; ii) to propose for Romanian authorities to implement a harmonized coherent methodology to measure radon concentration in water, as a consequence of EURATOM Directive; and iii) to educate local communities that are using groundwater as source for drinking water and raise young people’s awareness on the benefits of ecosystem services provided by the groundwater.

Active karst systems can offer good analogues for paleokarst reservoir modelling as they can provide links between present karst system geometries and the final reservoir architecture. Although clastic sediments are a characteristic and commonly conspicuous component of modern karst systems, their impact on the surveyed cave morphology has received limited attention. Here we address this topic by investigating the spatial and volumetric distribution of clastic sediments in a large karst cave hosting an active fluvial channel in northern Greece and discretize these in a geocellular framework. Mapping of cave floor sediment-types was supplemented by local stratigraphic logging of relict sediment terraces and electrical resistivity tomography in parts of the cave. Four resistivity groups were identified and interpreted as low- and high-porosity siliciclastic sediments, interbedded marble clasts, and host rock (marble). Sediment infill thickness ranges from 25 m to >45 m at the time of measurement; corresponding to a minimum of 64–95% of the cross-sectional area of the karst cavity in the surveyed part. These observations demonstrate that under certain circumstances, allochthonous siliciclastic sediments can form a significant volumetric component in karst systems and, by extension, in paleokarst reservoirs originating from similar karstic systems. This highlights the importance of understanding the context, organization and development of the initial karst system when characterizing paleokarst reservoirs. Mapping of sediment thickness is not usually carried out during cave surveys, which primarily focus on recording open cavities accessible to man. Cave passages and karst features form negative density contrasts expressed in gravity field anomalies. We present an interpretation approach for microgravimetry, applicable for challenging geological settings with heterogeneous lithologies. The workflow covers not only detection of large cave rooms, but also deals with minor karst features (epikarst) in carbonate rocks. Challenges due to heterogeneous infill of large cavities and variations in carbonate facies are addressed. We used 3D forward modelling of surface gravity measurements to investigate a large karst cave complex, known as the Svarthammarhola cave, in the Caledonian nappe setting of Nordland. The most important result relates to distinct gravity lows detected in the survey, which are interpreted as hitherto unknown and inaccessible cave rooms, some of them of a very large size. These correspond with known collapse and sediment infill features both at the surface and inside the Svarthammarhola cave system. This expands the known cave in an eastward and northward direction. Combining the cave’s position at the top of the hinge of a large antiform where we also modelled uncommonly high densities, together with the cave’s outstanding size, opens for new interpretations of the speleogenesis of the Svarthammarhola cave. Cave animals provide a unique opportunity to study contrasts in phenotype and life history in strikingly different environments when compared to surface populations, potentially related to natural selection. As such, we compared a permanent cave-living Gammarus lacustris (L.) population with two lake-resident surface populations analyzing morphology (eye- and antennal characters) and life-history (size at maturity, fecundity and egg-size). A part of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene in the mitochondrion (COI) was analyzed to contrast genetic relationship of populations and was compared to sequences in GenBank to assess phylogeography and colonization scenarios. In the cave, a longer life cycle was implied, while surface populations seemed to have a shorter life cycle. Egg size, and size at maturity for both sexes, were larger in the cave than in surface populations, while fecundity was lower in the cave than in surface populations. The cave population had longer first- and second antennae with more articles, longer first- and second peduncles, and fewer ommatidia than surface populations. The cold low-productive cave environment may facilitate different phenotypic and life-history traits than in the warmer and more productive surface lake environments. The trait divergences among cave and surface populations resembles other cave-surface organism comparisons and may support a hypothesis of selection on sensory traits. The cave and Lake Ulvenvann populations grouped together with a sequence from Slovenia (comprising one genetic cluster), while Lake Lille Lauarvann grouped with a sequence from Ukraine (comprising another cluster), which are already recognized phylogenetic clusters. One evolutionary scenario is that the cave and surface populations were colonized postglacially around 9 000–10 000 years ago. We evaluate that an alternative scenario is that the cave was colonized during an interstadial during the last glaciation or earlier during the warm period before onset of the last glaciation. publishedVersion

Ice caves of Fennoscandia and the Arctic are reviewed. Of the five caves listed in Norway, Svarthammarhola is the largest and most studied. Sweden and Finland each have one reported ice cave. Several of the lava tubes in Iceland contain perennial ice, of which only two are well documented. The potential for caves with accretional ground ice in Svalbard and Greenland is briefly discussed. In Fennoscandia, many caves have either lost all or a substantial amount of perennial ice during the past half-century.

Solutional (karst) and lava caves are the most extensive and frequent. Karst caves occur in carbonates, sulphates and halite; large lava tubes form in basalt. “Pseudokarst” caves include lava tubes, piping caves and caves in silicate rocks. Additional inhabitable voids occur in colluvial and alluvial deposits. The physiography of these cave habitats varies over a wide range of architectures and aggregate lengths. The size distribution of most cave voids is “fractal”, so that for a cave room passable to humans, there are several orders of magnitude for more voids of smaller sizes, capable of hosting biota. The internal environment of caves is characterized by lack of daylight, stable temperature and chemical regimes. Cave ventilation provides seasonal regimes of temperature and humidity that may support perennial ice deposits, at least in arctic and cold temperate regions.

The “espada” speleothems of Cueva de las Espadas (Naica Mine, Chihuahua, Mexico) comprise a high-purity selenite core overlain by successive deposits of calcite, gypsum and aragonite. Gypsum precipitated under water from a hydrothermal solution (~ 58°C) when the water table was above the cave level ca. 57 ka, during the last glaciation, and some intervals during deglaciation and the Holocene. Aragonite was deposited at lower temperatures (~ 26°C) in a perched lake occupying the cave bottom, when the water table dropped below the cave level during brief dry intervals during deglaciation and the early Holocene. The isotopic composition of gypsum water of crystallization shows that the deglaciation–Holocene aquifer water was enriched in deuterium by 12.8–8.7‰ relative to water from the last glaciation. This is attributed to an increased relative moisture contribution from the Gulf of Mexico during deglaciation and the Holocene compared to the last glaciation. This indicates that drier conditions occurred in the Naica area during the Holocene than around 57 ka. Furthermore, trace element analyses of gypsum served to deduce the circulation regime of the Naica aquifer during the past 60,000 yr, and also suggest that higher aquifer recharge occurred during the last glaciation.

Pockmarks are seafloor craters usually formed during methane release on continental margins. However, the mechanisms behind their formation and dynamics remain elusive. Here we report detailed investigations on one of the World's largest pockmark fields located in the Troll region in the northern North Sea. Seafloor investigations show that >7000 pockmarks are present in a ∼600 km2 area. A similar density of pockmarks is likely present over a 15,000 km2 region outside our study area. Based on extensive monitoring, coring, geophysical and geochemical analyses, no indications of active gas seepage were found. Still, geochemical data from carbonate blocks collected from these pockmarks indicate a methanogenic origin linked to gas hydrate dissociation and past fluid venting at the seafloor. We have dated the carbonates using the U–Th method in order to constrain the pockmark formation. The carbonates gave an isochron age of 9.59±1.38 ka9.59±1.38 ka, i.e. belonging to the initial Holocene. Moreover, radiocarbon dating of microfossils in the sediments inside the pockmarks is consistent with the ages derived from the carbonates. Based on pressure and temperature modelling, we show that the last deglaciation could have triggered dissociation of gas hydrates present in the region of the northern part of the Norwegian Channel, causing degassing of 0.26 MtCH4/km2 at the seafloor. Our results stress the importance of external climatic forcing of the dynamics of the seafloor, and the role of the rapid warming following the Younger Dryas in pacing the marine gas hydrate reservoir. Aim: Brown bear populations in Scandinavia show a strong mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) phylogeographic structure and low diversity relative to other parts of Europe. Identifying the timing and origins of this mtDNA structure is important for conservation programs aimed at restoring populations to a natural state. Therefore, it is essential to identify whether contemporary genetic structure is linked to post-glacial recolonisation from divergent source populations or an artefact of demographic impacts during recent population bottlenecks. We employed ancient DNA techniques to investigate the timing and potential causes of these patterns. Location: Scandinavia and Europe. Methods: Ancient mtDNA sequences from 20 post-glacial Scandinavian bears were used to investigate phylogeographic structure and genetic diversity over the last 6000 years. MtDNA from 19 Holocene Norwegian bears was compared with 499 sequences from proximate extant populations in Sweden, Finland, Estonia and western Russia. A single mtDNA sequence from a Holocene Denmark sample was compared with 149 ancient and modern bears from Western Europe. Results: All nineteen Holocene Norwegian samples are identical to or closely related to the most common mtDNA haplotype found in northern Europe today. MtDNA diversity was low and not significantly different from extant populations in northern Europe. In Denmark, we identified a single mtDNA haplotype that is previously unrecorded from Scandinavia. Main conclusions: The current discrete phylogeographic structure and lack of mtDNA diversity in Scandinavia is attributed to serial founder effects during post-glacial recolonisation from divergent source populations rather than an artefact of recent anthropogenic impacts. In contrast to previous interpretations, the recolonisation of southern Scandinavia may not have been limited to bears from a single glacial refugium. Results highlight the importance of conserving the long-term evolutionary separation between northern and southern populations and identify southern Scandinavia as an important reservoir of mtDNA diversity that is under threat in other parts of Europe. © 2012 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

The thermal springs Trollosen and Fisosen, located on the High Arctic archipelago Svalbard, discharge saline groundwaters rich in hydrogen sulfide and ammonium through a thick layer of permafrost. Large amounts of biomass that consist of filamentous microorganisms containing sulfur granules, as analyzed with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, were found in the outflow. Prokaryotic 16S rRNA gene libraries and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analyses reported bacteria of the γ- and ɛ-proteobacterial classes as the dominant organisms in the filaments and the planktonic fractions, closely related to known chemolithoautotrophic sulfur oxidizers (Thiotrix and Sulfurovum). Archaea comprised ∼1% of the microbial community, with the majority of sequences affiliated with the Thaumarchaeota. Archaeal and bacterial genes coding for a subunit of the enzyme ammonia monooxygenase (amoA) were detected, as well as 16S rRNA genes of Nitrospira, all of which is indicative of potential complete nitrification in both springs. 16S rRNA sequences related to methanogens and methanotrophs were detected as well. This study provides evidence that the microbial communities in Trollosen and Fisosen are sustained by chemolithotrophy, mainly through the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds, and that ammonium and methane might be minor, additional sources of energy and carbon.

This review provides an up-to-date synthesis of the matrilineal phylogeography of a uniquely wellstudied Holarctic mammal, the brown bear.We extend current knowledge by presenting a DNA sequence derived from one of the earliest known fossils of a polar bear (dated to 115 000 years before present), a species that shares a paraphyletic mitochondrial association with brown bears. A molecular clock analysis of 140 mitochondrial DNA sequences, including our new polar bear sequence, provides novel insights into the times of origin for different brown bear clades. We propose a number of regional biogeographic scenarios based on genetic data, divergence time estimates and paleontological records. The case of the brown bear provides an example for researchers working with less well-studied taxa: it shows clearly that phylogeographic models based on patterns of modern genetic variation alone can be substantially improved by including data on historical patterns of genetic diversity in the form of ancient DNA sequences derived from accurately dated samples and by using an approach to divergence-time estimation that suits the data under analysis. Using such approaches it has been possible to (i) establish that the processes shaping modern genetic diversity in brown bears acted recently, within the last three glacial cycles; (ii) distinguish among hypotheses concerning species' responses to climatic oscillations in accordance with the lack of phylogeographic structure that existed in brown bears prior to the last glacial maximum (LGM); (iii) reassess theories linking monophyletic brown bear populations to particular LGM refuge areas; and (iv) identify vicariance events and track analogous patterns of migration by brown bears out of Eurasia to North America and Japan. Comprehensive studies on a stalagmite from the Panlong cave, Guilin, have shown that the isotopic records and sedimentary characteristics can reflect the changes of both palaeotemperatures and palaeorainfall, that is to say, it is possible to get some information about the changes in climate of the area from the speleothem. The results suggest that: (1) the Younger Dryas event might have persisted in the area from 11 300 to 10 800 a B.P.; (2) from 9000 to 7000 a B.P., the climate got warmer and wetter, and the summer monsoon was gradually enhanced; (3) from 7000 to 4500 a B.P., the climate was warm and wet, and the summer monsoon prevailed; and (4) from 4500 a B.P. on, the summer monsoon was weakened and the modern climate pattern appeared, but there were several cold and dry periods, namely, from 4000 to 2500 a B.P., ca. 2400 a B.P. and < 1000 a B.P.

Summary Labyrinth and maze cave networks are a conspicuous feature in formerly glaciated stripe karst in Scandinavia. Often found in topographically “impossible” situations, their genesis is attributed to glacial ice-contact conditions. This is further supported by observing that individual networks may either be influent, effluent or through-flow; depending on the attitude of the host rock and former glacier directions. The ice-contact hypothesis is tested by using a finite difference, fracture network model where chemical and hydrological conditions can be varied. Subglacial chemistry alone (low partial pressure of CO 2 , low temperature) is not sufficient to favour mazes over linear caves. However, when coupled with high input saturation ratio, high and varied hydraulic gradients and glacial hydrology, the model produced cave patterns comparable in scale and complexity to our field examples.

The sensitivity of terrestrial environments to past changes in heat transport is expected to be manifested in Holocene climate proxy records on millennial to seasonal timescales. Stalagmite formation in the Okshola cave near Fauske (northern Norway) began at about 10.4 ka, soon after the valley was deglaciated. Past monitoring of the cave and surface has revealed stable modern conditions with uniform drip rates, relative humidity and temperature. Stable isotope records from two stalagmites provide time-series spanning from c. 10 380 yr to AD 1997; a banded, multi-coloured stalagmite (Oks82) was formed between 10 380 yr and 5050 yr, whereas a pristine, white stalagmite (FM3) covers the period from ~7500 yr to the present. The stable oxygen isotope (δ18Oc), stable carbon isotope (δ13Cc), and growth rate records are interpreted as showing i) a negative correlation between cave/surface temperature and δ18Oc, ii) a positive correlation between wetness and δ13Cc, and iii) a positive correlation between temperature and growth rate. Following this, the data from Okshola show that the Holocene was characterised by high-variability climate in the early part, low-variability climate in the middle part, and high-variability climate and shifts between two distinct modes in the late part. A total of nine Scandinavian stalagmite δ18Oc records of comparable dating precision are now available for parts or most of the Holocene. None of them show a clear Holocene thermal optimum, suggesting that they are influenced by annual mean temperature (cave temperature) rather than seasonal temperature. For the last 1000 years, δ18Oc values display a depletion-enrichment-depletion pattern commonly interpreted as reflecting the conventional view on climate development for the last millennium. Although the δ18Oc records show similar patterns and amplitudes of change, the main challenges for utilising high-latitude stalagmites as palaeoclimate archives are i) the accuracy of the age models, ii) the ambiguity of the proxy signals, and iii) calibration with monitoring data.

Luminescent lamination in a stalagmite from northern Norway is used to construct a ∼2780-year long, floating record of annual growth rate. Thermal ionisation mass-spectrometric (TIMS) U–Th ages ( n = 12) were determined along the growth axis and three subsample locations and ages (corrected and uncorrected for initial 230 Th/ 232 Th activity) were selected as anchor points for the floating chronology. On the basis of these anchor points, termination of growth occurred between AD 1729 and AD 1826. The annual banding records are used to evaluate the initial 230 Th/ 232 Th activity ratio adopted for correction of the U–Th ages. To achieve a reasonable fit between U–Th ages and estimates predicted by the anchored annual band age models, mean initial 230 Th/ 232 Th activity ratios of between 0.44 and 1.47 must be invoked. However, there remains a reasonable degree of scatter about the expected linear relationship between annual bands and U–Th chronology for individual subsamples indicating that the use of a single correction factor for Holocene stalagmites should be applied with caution. Stalagmite growth rate fluctuates on annual to centennial scale. The growth termination of the stalagmite presented here could have been a result of environmental change associated with the Little Ice Age, or, possibly local percolation pathway changes after an M s ∼ 6 earthquake in the region in AD 1819. Stable-isotope data from the same axis of growth show a pattern similar to the large-scale growth rate variations, and these combined proxy records are interpreted as showing gradual cooling and/or shortening of the vegetation growth season for the last 3000 years.

While stalagmites within caves are commonly used to obtain information about past climate change, little attention has so far been given to the cave, its morphology, and many other types of deposits contained in it. The discontinuous nature of cave sediments and the possibility that caves are re-shaped by more recent water circulations has discouraged many researchers, despite the fact that it is just this intimate relationship between the cave and surface conditions that makes caves such valuable archives. This article presents a method of determining a relative chronology which can then be dated numerically. Information from St. Beatus Cave and other nearby caves provides evidence of glacial advances that occurred within the following time windows: >350, 235–180, 160–135, 114–99, 76–54, and 30–16 ka. It also describes the following dated periods of valley deepening: 805–760 m a.s.l. (>350 ka), 760–700 m a.s.l. (235–180 ka), 700–660 m a.s.l. (160–135 ka), and 660–560 m a.s.l. (30–16 ka). These dates are new for this part of the Alpine Arc.

The faunal composition and temporal species succession dynamics during the Holocene are poorly known in Norway, and interpretations are often biased because of the potential overrepresentation of game species in the archaeological finds. Pitfall traps in limestone caves represent less biased long-term records of fauna, often being excellently preserved for thousands of years and thus providing an opportunity for reconstruction of the postglacial distribution history. We excavated fossiliferous sediments at the bottom of a 40–m entrance shaft, functioning as a pitfall trap, in the Sirijorda Cave, northern Norway, comprising 3467 identified vertebrate bone fragments. Radiocarbon-dating of mammalian bones at stratigraphic levels in excavated trenches was used for calibrating the time scale during the last 8000 14C years BP, with a reconstruction of local vegetation history from a pollen profile in the cave deposits. At least 20 species were identified: one frog, two birds (plus 1–2 to genus level) and 17 mammals. Most of the species appeared more or less continuously during the covered time periods of the Atlantic, Subboreal and Subatlantic chronozones. With the exception of one species, Sorex isodon, which seems to have disappeared during the past 2000 years, all the registered species in the time profile are present in the area today. The possible immigration routes and time periods for (re)colonization of the recorded species are discussed.

Norwegian caves contain stratigraphical information regarding the historical faunal composition valuable in the assessment of postglacial colonization and phylogeographical structure. In some of these limestone caves, brown bear (Ursus arctos L.) remains have been excavated and radiometrically dated. We present osteology (95 traits defined) from 29 brown bears found within 22 Norwegian caves above 658N. Our data span the time interval 6210–420 14C yr BP. The sex of individuals was based on dimorphic canines, while age was determined by cementum analysis and body size estimated from regressions between morphological traits compared to a contemporary reference collection. Five females and 14 males were recognized, while the remaining bears could not be sexed because of their small size, low age or lack of canines. Calcitic crusts of calcareous red algae could be suitable material for age determination of raised marine deposits and palaeothermometry at annual to sub-annual resolution. We examined the potential of U–Th dating of cold-water calcareous algae by analysing fossil specimens ( n =10) from Kapp Ekholm (Svalbard) and recent specimens from Norway ( n =3) and Scotland ( n =1). After initial measurements using α -spectrometry, thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS) was used to study the material in more detail. Recent specimens contain 0.19–1.55 μg g −1 U, and the measured ( 234 U/ 238 U) activity ratios vary between 1.12 and 1.30. Fossil specimens contain 1–168 μg g −1 U, and display variable and highly elevated initial ( 234 U/ 238 U) activity ratios. In general, the TIMS results show increasing ( 234 U/ 238 U) activity ratios and concentrations of U and Th with increasing stratigraphic age. From this it is evident that marine calcareous red algae contain U in-vivo and they experience substantial post-mortem uptake of U. We conclude that direct U–Th dating of fossil calcareous algae from raised marine deposits is not viable without further geochemical understanding of the in-vivo uptake and post-depositional pathways of U and Th in such deposits. Despite the convincing open-system behaviour of the material, comparison with previously published chronostratigraphy from the site shows that the calcareous algae generally yield ages that are too old. This is in contrast to the expected result based on simple continuous post-mortem U accumulation and calls for a complex model comprising migration of U and multi-component addition of Th (detrital/colloidal) to explain the observed trends.

Skjonghclleren is a marine-cut cave with 15–20. m thick pre-Holocene sediments. Corings and excavations reveal three beds of extremely fine-grained, laminated sediments alternating with blocky sediments. The laminated beds are interpreted as glaciolacustrine sediments deposited subglacially at times when ice sheets covered the area, suggesting at least three glaciations after the cave was formed. The blocky/diamictic sediments were formed by frost-shattered blocks from the roof of the cave during ice-free periods, and mixing with the fines through slow mass movements along the floor of the cave. In the diamictic sediment beneath the uppermost laminated bed, almost 7,000 bone and teeth fragments of birds, mammals and fish were found. Birds dominated, with little auk and brunnich's guillemot as the most frequently occurring species. Arctic fox was the dominating mammal. During climatic optimum of the interstadial, conditions seem to have been similar to present-day coastal Finnmark, with North Atlantic warm water entering the Norwegian Sea. Two radiocarbon dates on bones and three Uranium series dates on speleothems from this bed all cluster around 30,000 B.P., i.e., the end of the Alesund interstadial. Above the uppermost laminated bed, bone fragments of birds, fish and mammals, deposited between c. 12,000 and c. 10,000 B.P., were found. Little auk dominate. The occurrence of squirrel is worth noting since it is limited mainly to areas with coniferous forest today. The beds below the 30,000B.P. bed are poorly dated or undated, but it is tentatively concluded that the entire sediment sequence was deposited during the Weichselian stage. It seems that the cave was formed at a high relative sea-level stand sometime during the Early Weichsclian. Two recorded palaeomagnetic excursions seem to correlate with the Laschamp/Olby and the Lake Mungo events, respectively.

The Moringa Cave within Pleistocene sediments in the En Gedi area of the Dead Sea Fault Escarpment contains a sequence of various Pleistocene lacustrine deposits associated with higher-than-today lake levels at the Dead Sea basin. In addition it contains Chalcolithic remains and 5th century BC burials attributed to the Persian period, cemented and covered by Late Holocene travertine flowstone. These deposits represent a chain of Late Pleistocene and Holocene interconnected environmental and human events, echoing broader scale regional and global climate events. A major shift between depositional environments is associated with the rapid fall of Lake Lisan level during the latest Pleistocene. This exposed the sediments, providing for cave formation processes sometime between the latest Pleistocene (ca. 15 ka) and the Middle Holocene (ca. 4500 BC), eventually leading to human use of the cave. The Chalcolithic use of the cave can be related to a relatively moist desert environment, probably related to a shift in the location of the northern boundary of the Saharo-Arabian desert belt. The travertine layer was U–Th dated 2.46"0.10 to 2.10"0.04 ka, in agreement with the archaeological finds from the Persian period. Together with the inner consistency of the dating results, this strongly supports the reliability of the radiometric ages. The 2.46–2.10 ka travertine deposition within the presently dry cave suggests a higher recharge of the Judean Desert aquifer, correlative to a rising Dead Sea towards the end of the 1st millennium BC. This suggests a relatively moist local and regional climate facilitating human habitation of the desert.

This paper presents two early Holocene (9.6-5.9 ka BP) high-resolution stable isotope records of stalagmites from two caves in northwestern Sweden (Korallgrottan and Labyrintgrottan). Close similarities between the Swedish records and a previously presented Norwegian stalagmite oxygen isotope record emphasize the potential of Scandinavian stalagmites to provide high-resolution regional palaeoclimatic information. The stable oxygen isotope records are interpreted to reflect the temperature evolution during the early Holocene with a gradual warming from c. 9.6 ka BP, interrupted by cooler conditions at 8.5-8.0 ka BP. The results indicate that the cooler conditions were driven by two to three abrupt cold events rather than one ‘8.2 event’ only. Except for these cold events the stalagmite oxygen isotope records show that temperatures in northwestern Sweden were warmer than today between 9.6 and 5.9 ka BP and that during this period the interval between 7.8 and 5.9 ka BP seems to have been the warmest. The high-amplitude changes in the stable carbon isotope record of Labyrintgrottan are proposed to reflect changes in local vegetation. The area above Labyrintgrottan was most likely covered by much denser vegetation than today at the time of stalagmite growth (9.5-7.5 ka BP) and was -unlike today -probably situated below the local tree limit between 9.0 and 8.0 ka BP.

The PP10 stalagmite from Poleva Cave provides a Late Pleistocene and Holocene isotopic record characteristic for the SW of Romania, a sub-Mediterranean climatic region. The speleothem was dated by eight TIMS and one alpha U-series dates which showed that it was precipitated between ∼75 ka and ∼2 ka with at least two hiatuses. The basal sector of the stalagmite showed a slow-growing regime of ∼0.26 cm/ka, while the upper one grew relatively fast with about 5 cm/ka. The temporal resolution for the isotopic sampling is thus ∼2 ka/sample for the lower sector, and ∼150 years/sample for the upper one. The relationship between δ 18 O and temperature was found positive. The isotopic record of the lower sector shows two marked cold intervals during ∼67 and 58 ka and ∼40–35 ka, respectively, which correlate well with the Villars and Soreq records. The upper sector record is so far the most detailed Holocene isotopic record in Romania and the only one available for the regions located at the exterior of the Carpathians Range. The signal shows a gradual warming after the GS1 event punctuated by several cold events at ∼8, 7.2 and 4.2 ka and also by warm oscillations centered at about 5.2 and 3.3 ka. The results seem to indicate that if the North-Atlantic firstorder signals may extend well to the south-eastern Europe, their amplitude and general trend may be diminished by the interferences with the Mediterranean circulation.

Early human footprints are rare in the fossil record. A survey of the literature reveals very few well documented and dated cases. Here, we report the first clear Homo neanderthalensis footprint. It was found in Vârtop Cave, Romania. The individual stepped into calcareous mud that later hardened. The 22 cm long print suggests a body height of ∼1.46 m; a gap of 1.6 cm marks the separation of big and second toes. The date of the footprint is constrained by three coeval dates of ∼62 kyr on sub-samples from the basal layer of a nearby stalagmite that grew on top of the layer of calc-tufa covering the footprint. The lower constraint is a poorly constrained uranium (U)–thorium (Th) isochron date of ∼97 kyr on the calc-tufa layer in which the footprint is embedded. Thus, the Vârtop Cave individual lived in Romania sometime before 62 kyr, long before the appearance of Homo sapiens in Central and Eastern Europe, the earliest records of which date from only ∼35 kyr. To our knowledge, this is the first recognised and dated Homo neanderthalensis footprint.

In 1996–1997, indoor radon values of more than 40,000 Bq/m3 and large seasonal and geographical variations in indoor air radon were reported from a residential area located on a highly permeable ice-marginal deposit. Geochemical analyses of bedrock, groundwater and sediments and comparisons between indoor radon values and soil radon values indicate that the indoor radon concentrations in this area are strongly affected by subterranean airflows caused by temperature differences between soil air and atmospheric air. The airflows concentrate the radon-laden soil air towards the topographic highest part of the deposit in winter and towards the topographic lowest part in summer. In areas where subterranean airflows are likely to occur, radon measurements performed both in summer and in winter provide the best estimate of annual average indoor radon concentrations, and assessments of indoor radon concentrations based on single soil gas measurements are not recommended.

The cave region of Siebenhengste, situated north of Lake Thun (Switzerland), contains one of the most important cave systems in the world, which extends from 500 to 2000 m a.s.l. It has a complex multiphase history. The recognized speleogenetic phases are related to spring level and to old valley floors. The six most recent phases were investigated in St. Beatus cave and Barenschacht. They suggest a progressive Quarternary Aare valley incision to 890, 805, 760, 700, 660, and 558 m a.s.l. that is confirmed by statistical analysis of small caves. U/Th-datings of flowstone allowed a timing of the valley deepening phases: the valley bottom was at 760 m already before 350 ka, the one at 700 m was active between 235 and 160 ka. The cave morphology in the upper part of the cave system was coupled with sedimentological observations. This combination leads to the hypothesis that the uppermost (oldest) cave parts were already created in the Miocene, during and after the last deposition of the Molasse. Ideas about the evolution of the paleorelief suggest that today's Aare valley is a product of glacial erosion, and that the old Aare valley shifted its position several times between the Miocene and today.

A stalagmite from northern Norway is dated with 12 thermal ionization mass spectrometry U-Th dates, and at least four separate growth periods are identified that correspond with marine isotope stages 9, 11, 13, and probably 15. The calcite is tested for isotopic equilibrium with the Hendy test. Oxygen isotope measurements on 231 subsamples on a vertical transect are used as a paleotemperature proxy. The detailed isotopic record from MIS 9 show apparent similarities to a Holocene record from the same cave, both in the climatic evolution and the overall temperatures: both show temperature oscillations changing from high-frequency, low-amplitude cycles in the beginning of the interglacial period to lower frequency, higher amplitude cycles in the later part of the interglacial period. The isotope record from MIS 11 shows a distinct isotopic event toward heavier values. The isotopic record together with the porous, humus-rich calcite are interpreted as indicating a warmer than present interglacial period with several episodes of heavy rainfall.

The PU-2 stalagmite from Ursilor Cave provides the first dated Romanian isotope record for the Holocene. The overall growth rate of the speleothem was 3.5 cm kyr −1 , corresponding to a temporal resolution of 142 y between each isotope analysis. The 'Hendy' tests indicate that isotopic equilibrium conditions occurred during the formation of PU-2, and hence that it is suitable for palaeoclimatic studies. The relationship between δ 18 O and temperature was found to be positive. This can be interpreted either as rain-out with distance from the west-northwest ocean source of evaporation or shifts in air mass source with changing North Atlantic Oscillation indices. Στην παρούσα εργασία αναλύουμε την γεωμορφολογική εξέλιξη της κοιλάδας του Αγγίτη ποταμού και παρουσιάζουμε τον συσχετισμό των μορφολογικών χαρακτηριστικών από το σπήλαιο του Μααρά (Σπήλαιο πηγών Αγγίτη) με τις διάφορες γεωμορφές στην κοιλάδα του ποταμού. Παράλληλα, επιχειρούμε να θέσουμε ένα γενικό χρονολογικό πλαίσιο για την εξέλιξη της κοιλάδας. Για τον σκοπό αυτό μελετήσαμε το σπήλαιο και τις γεωμορφές στο εσωτερικό του ενώ παράλληλα μελετήθηκε και η επιφανειακή μορφολογία. Η τρισδιάστατη χαρτογράφηση του σπηλαίου έδειξε ότι η οροφή του σπηλαίου έχει κυματοειδές σχήμα ενώ το δάπεδό του παρουσιάζει μικρή κλίση και είναι καλυμμένο με κλαστικές αποθέσεις μεγάλου πάχους. Η γεωμορφολογική χαρτογράφηση έδειξε πως στο νότιο τμήμα της κοιλάδας υπάρχουν δύο windgaps. Αξιολογώντας τα αποτελέσματα καταλήγουμε στο συμπέρασμα ότι τέσσερα εξελεκτικά στάδια διαμόρφωσαν την κοιλάδα του Αγγίτη ποταμού κατά την περίοδο από το Νεογενές ως το Τεταρτογενές., In this paper we discuss the landscape evolution of the Aggitis River basin by correlating the morphological characteristics of the Maaras Cave (Aggitis River spring) with the main geomorphological features of the Aggitis fluvial valley. We combine the various morphological features that are hidden inside the Maaras Cave with the surface geomorphology of the river valley in order to trace the imprint of the different evolutionary stages on the landscape. Also, we provide a relative chronological framework for the evolution of the area. The 3D survey of the Maaras Cave shows that the roof of the cave is looping-like shaped in contrast to the floor of the cave that shows low slopes and holds thick clastic sediment deposits. Furthermore, the geomorphological mapping of the Aggitis River valley shows two prominent windgaps at the southern part of the basin that formed as the result of river capture. Our results suggest that the Aggitis River basin suffered four major evolutionary stages from the Neogene until the Quaternary.

A detailed climate proxy record based on δ18O, δ13O, and grey index of a well-dated stalagmite from Cold Air Cave in the Makapansgat Valley of north-eastern South Africa suggests that regional precipitation, temperatures and vegetation oscillated markedly and rapidly over the last ∼6500 years on centennial and multi-decadal scales. The mid-Holocene prior to 5200 years ago was humid and warm. A fundamental transition occurred 3200 years ago, leading to drier and cooler conditions that culminated at 1750 AD. Comparisons with ice core records suggest synchronous changes implicating rapid global teleconnections.
