The world has been turned upside down by a global health emergency caused by the COVID-19. Given the high contagiousness of the virus and the need to contain its spread, social distancing rules, self-isolation policies, and geographical lockdowns have been enforced globally. Over the pandemic emergency the majority of the planned in-person meetings and congresses of national and international anatomical societies have been postponed or canceled. It is unclear what the future holds, but times of crisis often present possibilities for re-thinking old ways to achieve a more critical approach. It has become increasingly clear that traditional in-person congress formats of scientific societies need to be reevaluated. Over the past year and a half, two types of congressional modalities have been trialed to address the challenge of the pandemic as far as scientific meetings are concerned: the fully virtual congress, in which case the conference program is live streamed to all of the attendees, and the hybrid congress, in which case some of the attendees physically participate at the congress's venue while others interact via a virtual platform. The current study set out to investigate the technical difficulties, social challenges, costs and sustainability, logistics and management issues linked to holding various types of congresses in the post-COVID world. Anatomical societies throughout the world are actively striving to reshape their response to the current global emergency and to uncover new types of conference modalities in the effort to keep scientific exchange alive and flourishing in the post-COVID era.

Advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with metastasis is linked to a bleak diagnostic prognosis. Common sites of dissemination involve the lungs, portal vein, and portal lymph nodes. This report presents a rare case of a 57-year-old man with a right atrial mass, a thrombus of an undiagnosed multifocal HCC. This case demonstrates the crucial role that transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has in promptly confirming the diagnosis with more details, as well as monitoring the surgery. Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is a complex clinical challenge resulting in functional disability. Neurological recovery does not always ensure functional recovery, as extracellular matrix (ECM) alterations affect muscle function. This study evaluates hyaluronan (HA) and collagen concentration in the gastrocnemius muscle and thoracolumbar fascia (TLF) in unilateral lower limb PNI rats to explore systemic ECM alterations following PNI and their impacts on functional recovery. Eighteen 8-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into experimental (n = 12 left sciatic nerve injury) and control (n = 6) groups. After six weeks, motor function was evaluated. Muscle and TLF samples were analysed for HA and collagen distribution and concentrations. SFI and gait analysis confirmed a functional deficit in PNI rats 6 weeks after surgery. HA concentration in both sides of the muscles decreased by approximately one-third; both sides showed significantly higher collagen concentration than healthy rats (12.74 ± 4.83 µg/g), with the left (32.92 ± 11.34 µg/g) significantly higher than the right (20.15 ± 7.03 µg/g). PNI rats also showed significantly lower HA (left: 66.95 ± 20.08 µg/g; right: 112.66 ± 30.53 µg/g) and higher collagen (left: 115.89 ± 28.18 µg/g; right: 90.43 ± 20.83 µg/g) concentrations in both TLF samples compared to healthy rats (HA: 167.18 ± 31.13 µg/g; collagen: 47.51 ± 7.82 µg/g), with the left TLF more affected. Unilateral lower limb PNI induced HA reduction and collagen accumulation in both the lower limb muscles and the TLF, potentially exacerbating motor function impairment and increasing the risk of low back dysfunctions. The retinacula of the ankle are specialized anatomical structures characterized by localized thickenings of the crural fascia that envelop the deep components of the lower leg, ankle and foot. The ankle retinacula include the extensor retinacula, the peroneal retinacula and flexor retinaculum. Despite their potential to explain persistent and unexplained pain following an injury, these structures are often overlooked or incorrectly diagnosed. Hence, this comprehensive review was performed aiming to investigate the use and the methodology of US imaging to assess ankle retinacula. The search was performed on PubMed and Web of Science databases from inception to May 2024. The MeSH keywords used were as follows: "Ankle Retinacula", "Foot Retinacula", "Superior extensor retinaculum", "Inferior extensor retinaculum", "peroneal retinaculum", "superior peroneal retinaculum", "inferior peroneal retinaculum", "flexor retinaculum", "Ultrasound Imaging", "Ultrasound", "Ultrasonography" and "Ultrasound examination". In total, 257 records underwent screening, resulting in 22 studies meeting the criteria for inclusion after the process of revision. Data heterogeneity prevents synthesis and consistent conclusions. The results showed that advanced US imaging holds promise as a crucial tool to perform an US examination of ankle retinacula, offering static and dynamic insights into ankle retinacula pathology. Understanding normal anatomy and US imaging is essential for accurately identifying injuries. Muscle spindles have unique anatomical characteristics that can be directly affected by the surrounding tissues under physiological and pathological conditions. Understanding their spatial distribution and density in different muscles is imperative to unravel the complexity of motor function. In the present study, the distribution and number/density of muscle spindles in human and animal muscles were reviewed. We identified 56 articles focusing on muscle spindle distribution; 13 articles focused on human muscles and 43 focused on animal muscles. The results demonstrate that spindles are located at the nerve entry points and along distributed vessels and they relate to the intramuscular connective tissue. Muscles' deep layers and middle segments are the main topographic distribution areas. Eleven articles on humans and thirty-three articles on animals (totaling forty-four articles) focusing on muscle spindle quantity and density were identified. Hand and head muscles, such as the pronator teres/medial pterygoid muscle/masseter/flexor digitorum, were most commonly studied in the human studies. For animals, whole-body musculature was studied. The present study summarized the spindle quantity in 77 human and 189 animal muscles. We identified well-studied muscles and any as-yet unfound data. The current data fail to clarify the relationship between quantity/density and muscle characteristics. The intricate distribution of the muscle spindles and their density and quantity throughout the body present some unique patterns or correlations, according to the current data. However, it remains unclear whether muscles with fine motor control have more muscle spindles since the study standards are inconsistent and data on numerous muscles are missing. Over the past decade, there has been a notable increase in research focused on ultrasound imaging of thoracolumbar fascia (TLF). Nevertheless, published papers' results about the application of US imaging in TLF examination are still sparse. Background and Objevtives: Hence, this systematic review was performed aiming to firstly investigate the use and the methodology of ultrasound imaging to assess pathologic and healthy TLF. Secondarily, we aim to assess intra- and inter-observer reproducibility of US imaging in TLF assessment. Materials and Methods: The search was done on PubMed and Web of Science database from inception to April 2024. Furthermore, the references of included papers were thoroughly checked to find eligible publications. The MeSH keywords used were: "Thoracolumbar fascia", "Ultrasound Imaging", "Ultrasound", "Ultrasonography", and "Ultrasound examination". Results: Studies were aimed primarily at TLF diagnosis, treatment monitoring, or evaluating movement-related changes, underscoring the diverse clinical applications. The US parameters assessed included TLF thickness, echogenicity, stiffness, deformation, shear strain, and displacement, providing comprehensive insights into TLF features. Conclusions: Advanced US imaging holds promise as a reliable tool in musculoskeletal assessment, offering insights into TLF pathology/disfunction, treatment outcomes, and movement dynamics. Retinacula of the ankle are thickening of the deep fascia of the leg (crural fascia) and foot i.e. inseparable structures. Recent studies report their crucial role in functional stability and proprioception of the ankle. A 38-yr-old Caucasian man - with a history of lateral malleolus fracture 12 years ago, obesity and right ankle osteoarthritis - was referred to a physiatrist for a right ankle pain that had significantly worsened over the last year. During walking, the patient experienced stinging pain in the area of tibialis anterior and peroneus tertius muscles, and the superior extensor retinaculum. Magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography showed clear thicknening (2.05 mm) of the oblique superomedial band of the inferior extensor retinaculum. Sonopalpation was performed to precisely evaluate/confirm the site of maximum pain. Foot function index (FFI) score was 42. Subsequently, the patient was prescribed fascial manipulation, and he had clinical improvement after the first session (FFI: 21). At 1-month follow-up, the patient was still asymptomatic without any functional limitation (FFI: 24). US imaging confirmed the decreased thickness of the oblique superomedial band of the extensor retinaculum (1.35 mm). Urinary incontinence is still an underestimated problem due to its anatomical complexity and social taboo. Most of the time, it is believed to affect predominantly the elderly female population, and the literature still lacks data on its presence in the younger and male populations. Its relationship with other pelvic floor dysfunctions (PFDs) and sport activity remains an open topic. Thus, the present study surveyed 342 subjects of both genders, ranging from 18 to 39 y/o and with different sport activity levels, to understand the prevalence of PFDs (such as haemorrhoids, anal fissures, involuntary urinary/faecal leakage, and urgency). The results also showed a significative prevalence in younger, sporty, and male people. Approximately one third of the population had urinary incontinence mostly during stress activities (sport activity: 17%, cough/sneeze: 13%). The statistical analysis confirmed a higher prevalence in the cases of a light (32%) and intense (41%) sport activity level and a protective role of sport if practiced between 5 and 10 h/week, with bodybuilding/CrossFit and running seeming to be the riskiest sports. The relationship with the other PFDs showed a statistically significant dependence with most of them, confirming that urinary incontinence cannot be considered a separate problem from the other PFDs.
