Einleitung Die Agrosystemforschung entwickelt datengetriebene Strategien für eine nachhaltige Primärproduktion unter Erhaltung und Verbesserung von Ökosystemleistungen und Agro-Biodiversität und ist somit heute und zukünftig ein wesentlicher Baustein für eine nachhaltige Landwirtschaft. Sie deckt dabei ein breites Feld verschiedener Fachdisziplinen wie dem Acker- und Pflanzenbau, der Bodenkunde und Pflanzenernährung, Phytopathologie und Pflanzenschutz, der angewandten Genetik und Pflanzenzüchtung, aber auch der Agroökosystemforschung, sowie der Agrar-, Landschafts- und Geoökologie ab in denen hochgradig diversen Arten von Daten erzeugt, gesammelt und analysiert werden. Dazu gehören z.B. Sequenzierungs-und Phänotypisierungsdaten von Nutzpflanzen, Daten aus Landschaftsmonitoring- und Feldversuchen, Sensordaten (Landwirtschaft 4.0), Fernerkundungsdaten oder auch Modellierungsdaten mit unterschiedlicher räumlicher und zeitlicher Auflösung. Aktuell befinden sich diese Daten überwiegend in wenig vernetzten, disziplinären und institutionellen Datenbanken oder liegen teilweise unstrukturiert und ohne Metadaten in heterogenen Speichersystemen. Rechtliche Regeln zur Nachnutzung dieser Daten sind bis heute uneinheitlich und erschweren deren Zugang. Material und Methoden Eine Vernetzung und Verfügbarmachung dieser Daten soll die Agrosystemforschung sowie angrenzender Forschungsdisziplinen beschleunigen und deren Effizienz und Transparenz erhöhen. Dazu hat sich das Konsortium „FAIRagro“ zusammengestellt, das im Rahmen der Nationalen Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI) in der Ausschreibungsrunde 2021 eine Projektförderung beantragt. FAIRagro hat das Ziel, eine flexible, interoperable und skalierbare Forschungsdateninfrastruktur für die Agrosystemforschung zu entwickeln. Dabei sollen existierende disziplinäre Datenbanken und -repositorien miteinander vernetzt, ein disziplinübergreifendes Suchportal aufgebaut, fehlende fachspezifische Repositorien gefördert und Schnittstellen für einen maschinenlesbaren Zugriff auf Forschungsdaten für diverse Nutzergruppen bereitgestellt werden. FAIRagro soll die Qualität von Forschungsdaten sicherstellen und Datenschutzstandards und Richtlinien für den Umgang mit sensiblen Daten und technische Lösungen zur deren Umsetzung entwickeln. Um die Wissensvermittlung an Nachwuchswissenschaftlern zu einem effektiven Forschungs-datenmanagement vorzubereiten, werden verschiedene Trainings- und Schulungs-module entwickelt und angeboten. Bei der Entwicklung all dieser Services wird die Community selbst aktiv in dem sie Anwendungsbeispiele und konkrete Anforderungen in Form von Use Cases formuliert. Die technische Auflösung von Use Cases werden gemeinsam in dem Konsortium umgesetzt. Das FAIRagro Konsortium umfasst derzeit mehr als 30 Partner mit langjährigen Erfahrungen im Forschungsdatenmanagement und mit exzellenter fachlicher Expertise in den relevanten Disziplinen und Verbindung zur landwirtschaftlichen Praxis sowie einer sehr guten Einbindung in nationale und internationale Forschungsnetzwerke und disziplinäre Fachgesellschaften. &nbsp

Future global change scenarios predict a dramatic loss of biodiversity for many regions in the world, potentially reducing the resistance and resilience of ecosystem functions. Once before, during Plio-Pleistocene glaciations, harsher climatic conditions in Europe as compared to North America led to a more depauperate tree flora. Here we hypothesize that this climate driven species loss has also reduced functional diversity in Europe as compared to North America. We used variation in 26 traits for 154 North American and 66 European tree species and grid-based co-occurrences derived from distribution maps to compare functional diversity patterns of the two continents. First, we identified similar regions with respect to contemporary climate in the temperate zone of North America and Europe. Second, we compared the functional diversity of both continents and for the climatically similar subregions using the functional dispersion-index (FDis) and the functional richness index (FRic). Third, we accounted in these comparisons for grid-scale differences in species richness, and, fourth, investigated the associated trait spaces using dimensionality reduction. For gymnosperms we find similar functional diversity on both continents, whereas for angiosperms functional diversity is significantly greater in Europe than in North America. These results are consistent across different scales, for climatically similar regions and considering species richness patterns. We decomposed these differences in trait space occupation into differences in functional diversity vs. differences in functional identity. We show that climate- driven species loss on a continental scale might be decoupled from or at least not linearly related to changes in functional diversity. This might be important when analyzing the effects of climate-driven biodiversity change on ecosystem functioning.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biodegradable and biocompatible polyesters considered as alternatives to petroleum-based plastics. Ralstonia eutropha is a model organism for PHA production. Utilizing industrially rendered waste animal fats as inexpensive carbon feedstocks for PHA production is demonstrated here. An emulsification strategy, without any mechanical or chemical pre-treatment, was developed to increase the bioavailability of solid, poorly-consumable fats. Wild type R. eutropha strain H16 produced 79-82% (w/w) polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) per cell dry weight (CDW) when cultivated on various fats. A productivity of 0.3 g PHB/(L × h) with a total PHB production of 24 g/L was achieved using tallow as carbon source. Using a recombinant strain of R. eutropha that produces poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyhexanoate) [P(HB-co-HHx)], 49-72% (w/w) of PHA per CDW with a HHx content of 16-27 mol% were produced in shaking flask experiments. The recombinant strain was grown on waste animal fat of the lowest quality available at lab fermenter scale, resulting in 45 g/L CDW with 60% (w/w) PHA per CDW and a productivity of 0.4 g PHA/(L × h). The final HHx content of the polymer was 19 mol%. The use of low quality waste animal fats as an inexpensive carbon feedstock exhibits a high potential to accelerate the commercialization of PHAs.

Lipid and fatty acid metabolism has been well studied in model microbial organisms like Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. The major precursor of fatty acid biosynthesis is also the major product of fatty acid degradation (beta-oxidation), acetyl-CoA, which is a key metabolite for all organisms. Controlling carbon flux to fatty acid biosynthesis and from beta-oxidation allows for the biosynthesis of natural products of biotechnological importance. Ralstonia eutropha can utilize acetyl-CoA from fatty acid metabolism to produce intracellular polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). R. eutropha can also be engineered to utilize fatty acid metabolism intermediates to produce different PHA precursors. Metabolism of lipids and fatty acids can be rerouted to convert carbon into other value-added compounds like biofuels. This review discusses the lipid and fatty acid metabolic pathways in R. eutropha and how they can be used to construct reagents for the biosynthesis of products of industrial importance. Specifically, how the use of lipids or fatty acids as the sole carbon source in R. eutropha cultures adds value to these biotechnological products will be discussed here.
