Search

In order to understand the nature of super-Eddington accretion we must explore both the emission emerging directly from the inflow and its impact on the surroundings. In this paper we test whether we can use the optical line emission of spatially resolved, ionized nebulae around ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) as a proxy for their X-ray luminosity. We choose the ULX NGC 6946 X-1 and its nebula, MF16, as a test case. By studying how the nebular optical line emission responds to assumed irradiation, we can infer the degree to which we require the UV or X-ray emission from the inflow to be collimated by optically thick winds seemingly ubiquitously associated with ULXs. We find that the nebula is highly sensitive to compact UV emission but mostly insensitive to hard X-rays. Our attempts to quantify the beaming of the soft and hard X-rays therefore strongly depends on the UV luminosity of the ULX in the center of the nebula. We find that it is not possible to conclude a lack of geometrical beaming of hard X-rays from such sources via nebula feedback., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables

We present results from a systematic infrared (IR) census of R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars in the Milky Way, using data from the Palomar Gattini IR (PGIR) survey. R Coronae Borealis stars are dusty, erratic variable stars presumably formed from the merger of a He-core and a CO-core white dwarf (WD). PGIR is a 30 cm $J$-band telescope with a 25 deg$^{2}$ camera that surveys 18000 deg$^{2}$ of the northern sky ($\delta>-28^{o}$) at a cadence of 2 days. Using PGIR J-band lightcurves for $\sim$60 million stars together with mid-IR colors from WISE, we selected a sample of 530 candidate RCB stars. We obtained near-IR spectra for these candidates and identified 53 RCB stars in our sample. Accounting for our selection criteria, we find that there are a total of $\approx350^{+150}_{-100}$ RCB stars in the Milky Way. Assuming typical RCB lifetimes, this corresponds to an RCB formation rate of 0.8 - 5 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$, consistent with observational and theoretical estimates of the He-CO WD merger rate. We searched for quasi-periodic pulsations in the PGIR lightcurves of RCB stars and present pulsation periods for 16 RCB stars. We also examined high-cadenced TESS lightcurves for RCB and the chemically similar, but dustless hydrogen-deficient carbon (dLHdC) stars. We find that dLHdC stars show variations on timescales shorter than RCB stars, suggesting that they may have lower masses than RCB stars. Finally, we identified 3 new spectroscopically confirmed and 12 candidate Galactic DY Per type stars - believed to be colder cousins of RCB stars - doubling the sample of Galactic DY Per type stars., Comment: accepted for publication in PASP

We analyzed images of every northern hemisphere Sd galaxy listed in the Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies (RC3) with a relatively face-on inclination ($\theta\leq30{\deg}$). Specifically, we measured the spiral arms' winding angle, $\phi$, in 85 galaxies. We applied a novel black hole mass planar scaling relation involving the rotational velocities (from the literature) and pitch angles of each galaxy to predict central black hole masses. This yielded 23 galaxies, each having at least a 50% chance of hosting a central intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH), $10^2$1.22% of bright galaxies ($B_{\rm T}\lesssim15.5$ mag) in the local Universe host an IMBH (i.e., the "occupation fraction"), which implies a number density $>$$4.96\times10^{-6}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ for central IMBHs. Finally, we observe that Sd galaxies exhibit an unexpected diversity of properties that resemble the general population of spiral galaxies, albeit with an enhanced signature of the eponymous prototypical traits (i.e., low masses, loosely wound spiral arms, and smaller rotational velocities)., Comment: Unedited manuscript (30 pages, 5 figures, and 1 table) accepted by The Astrophysical Journal on June 7, 2024

Palomar Gattini-IR is a wide-field, synoptic infrared time domain survey covering $\approx 15000$ sq. deg. of the sky at $\approx 1-3$ night cadence to a depth of $J\approx 13.0$ and $\approx 14.9$ Vega mag in and outside the Galactic plane, respectively. Here, we present the first data release of $J$-band light curves of 2MASS sources within the survey footprint covering approximately the first four years of operations. We describe the construction of the source catalog based on the 2MASS point sources, followed by exposure filtering criteria and forced PSF photometry. The catalog contains light curves of $\approx 286$ million unique sources with 2MASS magnitudes of $J < 15.5$ mag, with a total of $\approx 50$ billion photometric measurements and $\approx 20$ billion individual source detections at signal-to-noise-ratio $> 3$. We demonstrate the photometric fidelity of the catalog by i) quantifying the magnitude-dependent accuracy and uncertainty of the photometry with respect to 2MASS and ii) comparing against forced PGIR aperture photometry for known variable sources. We present simple filtering criteria for selecting reliable photometric measurements as well as example Python notebooks for users. This catalog is the largest compilation of nightly cadence, synoptic infrared light curves to date, comparable to those in the largest optical surveys, providing a stepping stone to upcoming infrared surveys in the coming decade., Comment: 10 Pages, 5 figures, submitted to PASP. While much has been learned in recent decades about the X-ray emission of the extragalactic Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), their radiative output in the UV band remains poorly constrained. Understanding of the full ULX spectral energy distribution (SED) is imperative to constrain the accretion flow geometry powering them, as well as their radiative power. Here we present constraints on the UV emission of the pulsating ULX (PULX) NGC~1313~X--2 based on the absence of nebular {He{\sc ii} $\lambda$4686} emission in its immediate environment. To this end, we first perform multi-band spectroscopy of the ULX to derive three realistic extrapolations of the SED into the unaccessible UV, each predicting varying levels of UV luminosity. We then perform photo-ionization modelling of the bubble nebula and predict the {He{\sc ii} $\lambda$4686} fluxes that should have been observed based on each of the derived SEDs. We then compare these predictions with the derived upper limit on {\heii} from MUSE data, which allows us to infer a UV luminosity $L_\mathrm{UV} \lesssim 1 \times 10^{39}$ erg/s in the PULX NGC~1313~X--2. Comparing the UV luminosity inferred with other ULXs, our work suggests there may be an intrinsic difference between hard and soft ULXs, either related to different mass-transfer rates and/or the nature of the accretor. However, a statistical sample of ULXs with inferred UV luminosities is needed to fully determine the distinguishing features between hard and soft ULXs. Multi-wavelength polarimetry and radio observations of Swift J1727.8-1613 at the beginning of its recent 2023 outburst suggested the presence of a bright compact jet aligned in the north-south direction, which could not be confirmed without high angular resolution images. Using the Very Long Baseline Array and the Long Baseline Array, we imaged Swift J1727.8-1613, during the hard/hard-intermediate state, revealing a bright core and a large, two-sided, asymmetrical, resolved jet. The jet extends in the north-south direction, at a position angle of $-0.60\pm0.07\deg$ East of North. At 8.4 GHz, the entire resolved jet structure is $\sim110 (d/2.7\,\text{kpc})/\sin i$ AU long, with the southern approaching jet extending $\sim80 (d/2.7\,\text{kpc})/\sin i$ AU from the core, where $d$ is the distance to the source and $i$ is the inclination of the jet axis to the line of sight. These images reveal the most resolved continuous X-ray binary jet, and possibly the most physically extended continuous X-ray binary jet ever observed. Based on the brightness ratio of the approaching and receding jets, we put a lower limit on the intrinsic jet speed of $\beta\geq0.27$ and an upper limit on the jet inclination of $i\leq74\deg$. In our first observation we also detected a rapidly fading discrete jet knot $66.89\pm0.04$ mas south of the core, with a proper motion of $0.66\pm0.05$ mas hour$^{-1}$, which we interpret as the result of a downstream internal shock or a jet-ISM interaction, as opposed to a transient relativistic jet launched at the beginning of the outburst., Comment: Accepted in ApJL

We study the impact of black hole nuclear activity on both the global and radial star formation rate (SFR) profiles in X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the field of miniJPAS, the precursor of the much wider J-PAS project. Our sample includes 32 AGN with z < 0.3 detected via the XMM-Newton and Chandra surveys. For comparison, we assembled a control sample of 71 star-forming (SF) galaxies with similar magnitudes, sizes, and redshifts. To derive the global properties of both the AGN and the control SF sample, we used CIGALE to fit the spectral energy distributions derived from the 56 narrowband and 4 broadband filters from miniJPAS. We find that AGN tend to reside in more massive galaxies than their SF counterparts. After matching samples based on stellar mass and comparing their SFRs and specific SFRs (sSFRs), no significant differences appear. This suggests that the presence of AGN does not strongly influence overall star formation. However, when we used miniJPAS as an integral field unit (IFU) to dissect galaxies along their position angle, a different picture emerges. We find that AGN tend to be more centrally concentrated in mass with respect to SF galaxies. Moreover, we find a suppression of the sSFR up to 1Re and then an enhancement beyond 1Re , strongly contrasting with the decreasing radial profile of sSFRs in SF galaxies. This could point to an inside-out quenching of AGN host galaxies. These findings suggest that the reason we do not see differences on a global scale is because star formation is suppressed in the central regions and enhanced in the outer regions of AGN host galaxies. Light curves serve as a valuable source of information on stellar formation and evolution. With the rapid advancement of machine learning techniques, it can be effectively processed to extract astronomical patterns and information. In this study, we present a comprehensive evaluation of deep-learning and large language model (LLM) based models for the automatic classification of variable star light curves, based on large datasets from the Kepler and K2 missions. Special emphasis is placed on Cepheids, RR Lyrae, and eclipsing binaries, examining the influence of observational cadence and phase distribution on classification precision. Employing AutoDL optimization, we achieve striking performance with the 1D-Convolution+BiLSTM architecture and the Swin Transformer, hitting accuracies of 94\% and 99\% correspondingly, with the latter demonstrating a notable 83\% accuracy in discerning the elusive Type II Cepheids-comprising merely 0.02\% of the total dataset.We unveil StarWhisper LightCurve (LC), an innovative Series comprising three LLM-based models: LLM, multimodal large language model (MLLM), and Large Audio Language Model (LALM). Each model is fine-tuned with strategic prompt engineering and customized training methods to explore the emergent abilities of these models for astronomical data. Remarkably, StarWhisper LC Series exhibit high accuracies around 90\%, significantly reducing the need for explicit feature engineering, thereby paving the way for streamlined parallel data processing and the progression of multifaceted multimodal models in astronomical applications. The study furnishes two detailed catalogs illustrating the impacts of phase and sampling intervals on deep learning classification accuracy, showing that a substantial decrease of up to 14\% in observation duration and 21\% in sampling points can be realized without compromising accuracy by more than 10\%., Comment: 35 pages, 20 figures

We studied the multiband properties of two ultraluminous X-ray sources (2CXO J225728.9-410211 = X-1 and 2CXO J225724.7-410343 = X-2) and their surroundings, in the spiral galaxy NGC 7424. Both sources have approached X-ray luminosities L_{X} ~ 10^{40} erg/s at some epochs. Thanks to a more accurate astrometric solution (based on Australia Telescope Compact Array and Gaia data), we identified the point-like optical counterpart of X-1, which looks like an isolated B8 supergiant (M ~ 9 Msun, age ~ 30 Myr). Instead, X-2 is in a star-forming region (size of about 100 pc x 150 pc), near young clusters and ionized gas. Very Large Telescope long-slit spectra show a spatially extended region of HeII 4686 emission around the X-ray position, displaced by about 50 pc from the brightest star cluster, which corresponds to the peak of lower-ionization line emission. We interpret the HeII 4686 emission as a signature of X-ray photo-ionization from the ULX, while the other optical lines are consistent with UV ionization in an ordinary HeII region. The luminosity of this He^{++} nebula puts it in the same class as other classical photo-ionized ULX nebulae such as those around Holmberg II X-1 and NGC 5408 X-1. We locate a strong (5.5-GHz luminosity nu L_{nu} ~ 10^{35} erg/s), steep-spectrum, unresolved radio source at the peak of the low-ionization lines, and discuss alternative physical scenarios for the radio emission. Stars in the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) phase, dominated by low to intermediate-mass stars in the late stage of evolution, undergo periodic pulsations, with periods of several hundred days, earning them the name Long Period Variables (LPVs). These stars gradually shed their mass through stellar winds and mass ejections, enveloping themselves in dust. Infrared (IR) surveys can probe these dust-enshrouded phases and uncover populations of LPV stars in the Milky Way. In this paper, we present a catalog of 159,696 Long Period Variables using near-IR lightcurves from the Palomar Gattini - IR (PGIR) survey. PGIR has been surveying the entire accessible northern sky ($\delta > -28^{\circ}$) in the J-band at a cadence of 2-3 days since September 2018, and has produced J-band lightcurves for more than 60 million sources. We used a gradient-boosted decision tree classifier trained on a comprehensive feature set extracted from PGIR lightcurves to search for LPVs in this dataset. We developed a parallelized and optimized code to extract features at a rate of ~0.1 seconds per lightcurve. Our model can successfully distinguish LPVs from other stars with a true positive rate and weighted g-mean of 0.95. 73,346 (~46%) of the sources in our catalog are new, previously unknown LPVs., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

Black hole X-ray binaries (BH XRBs) are ideal targets to study the connection between accretion inflow and jet outflow. Here we present quasi-simultaneous, multi-wavelength observations of the Galactic black hole system MAXI J1820+070, throughout its 2018-2019 outburst. Our data set includes coverage from the radio through X-ray bands from 17 different instruments/telescopes, and encompasses 19 epochs over a 7 month time period, resulting in one of the most well-sampled multi-wavelength data sets of a BH XRB outburst to date. With our data, we compile and model the broad-band spectra of this source using a phenomenological model that includes emission from the jet, companion star, and accretion flow. This modeling allows us to track the evolution of the spectral break in the jet spectrum, a key observable that samples the jet launching region. We find that the spectral break location changes over at least $\approx3$ orders of magnitude in electromagnetic frequency over this period. Using these spectral break measurements, we link the full cycle of jet behavior, including the rising, quenching, and re-ignition, to the changing accretion flow properties as the source evolves through its different accretion states. Our analyses show a consistent jet behavior with other sources in similar phases of their outbursts, reinforcing that the jet quenching and recovery may be a global feature of BH XRB systems in outburst. We report an ASKAP search for associated HI 21-cm absorption against bright radio sources from the Molonglo Reference Catalogue (MRC) 1-Jy sample. The search uses pilot survey data from the ASKAP First Large Absorption Survey in \hi (FLASH) covering the redshift range $0.42 < z < 1.00$. From a sample of 62 MRC 1-Jy radio galaxies and quasars in this redshift range we report three new detections of associated HI 21-cm absorption, yielding an overall detection fraction of $1.8\%^{+4.0\%}_{-1.5\%}$. The detected systems comprise two radio galaxies (MRC 2216$-$281 at $z=0.657$ and MRC 0531$-$237 at $z=0.851$) and one quasar (MRC 2156$-$245 at $z=0.862$). The MRC 0531$-$237 absorption system is the strongest found to date, with a velocity integrated optical depth of $\rm 143.8 \pm 0.4 \ km \ s^{-1}$. All three objects with detected HI 21-cm absorption are peaked-spectrum or compact steep-spectrum (CSS) radio sources, classified based on our SED fits to the spectra. Two of them show strong interplanetary scintillation at 162 MHz, implying that the radio continuum source is smaller than 1 arcsec in size even at low frequencies. Among the class of peaked-spectrum and compact steep-spectrum radio sources, the HI detection fraction is $23\%^{+22\%}_{-13\%}$. This is consistent within $1\sigma$ with a detection fraction of $\approx 42\%^{+21\%}_{-15\%}$ in earlier reported GPS and CSS samples at intermediate redshifts ($0.4 < z < 1.0$). All three detections have a high 1.4 GHz radio luminosity, with MRC 0531$-$237 and MRC 2216$-$281 having the highest values in the sample, $\rm > 27.5 \ W \ Hz^{-1}$. The preponderance of extended radio sources in our sample could partially explain the overall low detection fraction, while the effects of a redshift evolution in gas properties and AGN UV luminosity on the neutral gas absorption still need to be investigated., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures and 7 Tables. GRS 1747-312 is a bright Low-Mass X-ray Binary in the globular cluster Terzan 6, located at a distance of 9.5 kpc from the Earth. It exhibits regular outbursts approximately every 4.5 months, during which periodic eclipses are known to occur. These eclipses have only been observed in the outburst phase, and are not clearly seen when the source is quiescent. Recent Chandra observations of the source were performed in June 2019 and April, June, and August of 2021. Two of these observations captured the source during its outburst, and showed clear flux decreases at the expected time of eclipse. The other two observations occurred when the source was quiescent. We present the discovery of a dip that occurred during the quiescent state. The dip is of longer duration and its time of occurrence does not fit the ephemeris of the shorter eclipses. We study the physical characteristics of the dip and determine that it has all the properties of an eclipse by an object with a well defined surface. We find that there are several possibilities for the nature of the object causing the 5.3 ks eclipse. First, GRS 1747-312 may be an X-ray triple, with an LMXB orbited by an outer third object, which could be an M-dwarf, brown dwarf, or planet. Second, there could be two LMXBs in close proximity to each other, likely bound together. Whatever the true nature of the eclipser, its presence suggests that the GRS 1747-312 system is unique., Comment: 38 pages, 30 figures, submitted to MNRAS

High mass X-ray binaries hosting red supergiant (RSG) donors are a rare but crucial phase in massive stellar evolution, with only one source previously known in the Milky Way. In this letter, we present the identification of the second Galactic RSG X-ray binary SWIFT J0850.8-4219. We identify the source 2MASS 08504008-4211514 as the likely infrared counterpart with a chance coincidence probability $\approx 5 \times 10^{-6}$. We present a $1.0 - 2.5\,\mu$m spectrum of the counterpart, exhibiting features characteristic of late-type stars and an exceptionally strong He I emission line, corroborating the identification. Based on i) the strength of the $^{12}$CO(2,0) band, ii) strong CN bandheads and absent TiO bandheads at $\approx 1.1\,\mu$m and iii) equivalent width of the Mg I $1.71\,\mu$m line, we classify the counterpart to be a K3$-$K5 type RSG with an effective temperature of $3820 \pm 100$ K, located at a distance of $\approx 12$ kpc. We estimate the source X-ray luminosity to be $(4 \pm 1) \times 10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$, with a hard photon index ($\Gamma < 1$), arguing against a white dwarf accretor but consistent with a magnetized neutron star in the propeller phase. We present the results of our study of the luminous (L_{X} ~ 10^{39} erg/s) X-ray binary CXOU J121538.2+361921 in NGC 4214, the high mass X-ray binary with the shortest known orbital period. Using Chandra data, we confirm the ~13,000 s (3.6 hr) eclipse period, and an eclipse duration of ~2000 s. From this, we estimate a mass ratio M_2/M_1 >~ 3 and a stellar density of about 6 g cm^{-3}, which implies that the donor must be a Wolf-Rayet or a stripped Helium star. The eclipse egress is consistently much slower than the ingress. This can be explained by denser gas located either in front of the compact object (as expected for a bow shock) or trailing the donor star (as expected for a shadow wind, launched from the shaded side of the donor). There is no change in X-ray spectral shape with changing flux during the egress, which suggests either variable partial covering of the X-ray source by opaque clumps or, more likely, a grey opacity dominated by electron scattering in a highly ionized medium. We identify the optical counterpart from Hubble images. Photometry blueward of ~5500 Ang indicates a bright (M_{B} = -3.6 +/- 0.3 mag, for a range of plausible extinctions), hot (T = 90,000 +/- 30,000 K) emitter, consistent with the Wolf-Rayet scenario. There is also a bright (M_{I} ~ -5.2 mag), cool (T = 2700 +/- 300 K) component consistent with an irradiated circumbinary disk or with a chance projection of an unrelated asymptotic giant branch star along the same line of sight., Comment: 20 pages, 4 MB, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a systematic search for radio counterparts of novae using the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Our search used the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey, which covered the entire sky south of declination $+41^{\circ}$ ($\sim34,000$ square degrees) at a central frequency of 887.5 MHz, the Variables and Slow Transients Pilot Survey, which covered $\sim5,000$ square degrees per epoch (887.5 MHz), and other ASKAP pilot surveys, which covered $\sim200-2000$ square degrees with 2-12 hour integration times. We crossmatched radio sources found in these surveys over a two-year period, from April 2019 to August 2021, with 440 previously identified optical novae, and found radio counterparts for four novae: V5668 Sgr, V1369 Cen, YZ Ret, and RR Tel. Follow-up observations with the Australian Telescope Compact Array confirm the ejecta thinning across all observed bands with spectral analysis indicative of synchrotron emission in V1369 Cen and YZ Ret. Our light-curve fit with the Hubble Flow model yields a value of $1.65\pm 0.17 \times 10^{-4} \rm \:M_\odot$ for the mass ejected in V1369 Cen. We also derive a peak surface brightness temperature of $250\pm80$ K for YZ Ret. Using Hubble Flow model simulated radio lightcurves for novae, we demonstrate that with a 5$\sigma$ sensitivity limit of 1.5 mJy in 15-min survey observations, we can detect radio emission up to a distance of 4 kpc if ejecta mass is in the range $10^{-3}\rm \:M_\odot$, and upto 1 kpc if ejecta mass is in the range $10^{-5}-10^{-3}\rm \:M_\odot$. Our study highlights ASKAP's ability to contribute to future radio observations for novae within a distance of 1 kpc hosted on white dwarfs with masses $0.4-1.25\:\rm M_\odot$ , and within a distance of 4 kpc hosted on white dwarfs with masses $0.4-1.0\:\rm M_\odot$., Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication in PASA. We report observations of the optical counterpart of the long gamma-ray burst (LGRB) GRB 221009A. Due to the extreme rarity of being both nearby ($z = 0.151$) and highly energetic ($E_{\gamma,\mathrm{iso}} \geq 10^{54}$ erg), GRB 221009A offers a unique opportunity to probe the connection between massive star core collapse and relativistic jet formation across a very broad range of $\gamma$-ray properties. Adopting a phenomenological power-law model for the afterglow and host galaxy estimates from high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging, we use Bayesian model comparison techniques to determine the likelihood of an associated SN contributing excess flux to the optical light curve. Though not conclusive, we find moderate evidence ($K_{\rm{Bayes}}=10^{1.2}$) for the presence of an additional component arising from an associated supernova, SN 2022xiw, and find that it must be substantially fainter ($<$ 67% as bright at the 99% confidence interval) than SN 1998bw. Given the large and uncertain line-of-sight extinction, we attempt to constrain the supernova parameters ($M_{\mathrm{Ni}}$, $M_{\mathrm{ej}}$, and $E_{\mathrm{KE}}$) under several different assumptions with respect to the host galaxy's extinction. We find properties that are broadly consistent with previous GRB-associated SNe: $M_{\rm{Ni}}=0.05$ - $0.25 \, \rm{M_\odot}$, $M_{\rm{ej}}=3.5$ - $11.1 \, \rm{M_\odot}$, and $E_{\rm{KE}} = (1.6$ - $5.2) \times 10^{52} \, \rm{erg}$. We note that these properties are weakly constrained due to the faintness of the supernova with respect to the afterglow and host emission, but we do find a robust upper limit on the $M_{\rm{Ni}}$ of $M_{\rm{Ni}}<0.36\, \rm{M_\odot}$. We present a high time resolution, multi-frequency linear polarization analysis of Very Large Array (VLA) radio observations during some of the brightest radio flaring (~1 Jy) activity of the 2015 outburst of V404 Cygni. The VLA simultaneously captured the radio evolution in two bands (each with two 1 GHz base-bands), recorded at 5/7 GHz and 21/26 GHz, allowing for a broadband polarimetric analysis. Given the source's high flux densities, we were able to measure polarization on timescales of ~13 minutes, constituting one of the highest temporal resolution radio polarimetric studies of a black hole X-ray binary (BHXB) outburst to date. Across all base-bands, we detect variable, weakly linearly polarized emission (<1%) with a single, bright peak in the time-resolved polarization fraction, consistent with an origin in an evolving, dynamic jet component. We applied two independent polarimetric methods to extract the intrinsic electric vector position angles and rotation measures from the 5 and 7 GHz base-band data and detected a variable intrinsic polarization angle, indicative of a rapidly evolving local environment or a complex magnetic field geometry. Owing to their quiet evolutionary histories, nearby dwarf galaxies (stellar masses $M_\star \lesssim 3 \times 10^9 M_\odot$) have the potential to teach us about the mechanism(s) that 'seeded' the growth of supermassive black holes, and also how the first stellar mass black holes formed and interacted with their environments. Here, we present high spatial-resolution observations of three dwarf galaxies in the X-ray (Chandra), the optical/near-infrared (Hubble Space Telescope), and the radio (Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array). These three galaxies were previously identified as hosting candidate active galactic nuclei on the basis of lower resolution X-ray imaging. With our new observations, we find that X-ray sources in two galaxies (SDSS J121326.01+543631.6 and SDSS J122111.29+173819.1) are off nuclear and lack corresponding radio emission, implying they are likely luminous X-ray binaries. The third galaxy (Mrk 1434) contains two X-ray sources (each with $L_{\rm X} \approx 10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$) separated by 2".8, has a low metallicity (12 + log (O/H) = 7.8), and emits nebular \ion{He}{II} $\lambda$4686 line emission. The northern source has spatially coincident point-like radio emission at 9.0 GHz and extended radio emission at 5.5 GHz. We discuss X-ray binary interpretations (where an ultraluminous X-ray source blows a 'radio bubble') and active galactic nucleus interpretations (where a $\approx 4\times10^5 M_\odot$ black hole launches a jet). We present the results of a search for associated 21 cm HI absorption at redshift 0.42 < z < 1.00 in radio-loud galaxies from three Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey fields. These observations were carried out as part of a pilot survey for the ASKAP First Large Absorption Survey in HI (FLASH). From a sample of 326 radio sources with 855.5 MHz peak flux density above 10 mJy we detected two associated HI absorption systems, in SDSS J090331+010847 at z= 0.522 and SDSS J113622+004852 at z= 0.563. Both galaxies are massive (stellar mass > 10$^{11}$ M$_{sun}$) and have optical spectra characteristic of luminous red galaxies,though SED fitting implies that SDSS J113622+004852 contains a dust-obscured starburst with SFR ~ 69 M$_{sun}$ yr$^{-1}$. The HI absorption lines have a high optical depth, with $\tau_{pk}$ of 1.77 $\pm$ 0.16 for SDSS J090331+010847 (the highest value for any z > 0.1 associated system found to date) and 0.14 $\pm$ 0.01 for SDSS J113622+004852. In the redshift range probed by our ASKAP observations, the detection rate for associated HI absorption lines (with $\tau_{pk}$ > 0.1 and at least 3$\sigma$ significance) is 2.9 (+9.7 -2.6) percent. Although the current sample is small, this rate is consistent with a trend seen in other studies for a lower detection rate of associated 21 cm HI absorption systems at higher redshift. We revisit various sets of published results from X-ray and optical studies of the Galactic black hole (BH) candidate MAXI J0637-430, which went into outburst in 2019. Combining the previously reported values of peak outburst luminosity, best-fitting radii of inner and outer accretion disk, viewing angle, exponential decay timescale and peak-to-peak separation of the He II 4686 disk emission line, we improve the constraints on the system parameters. We estimate a heliocentric distance d = (8.7 +/- 2.3) kpc, a projected Galactocentric distance R = (13.2 +/- 1.8) kpc and a height |z| = (3.1 +/- 0.8) kpc from the Galactic plane. It is the currently known Milky Way BH candidate located farthest from the Galactic Centre. We infer a BH mass M_1 = (5.1 +/- 1.6) M_{sun}, a spin parameter a* <~ 0.25, a donor star mass M_2 = (0.25 +/- 0.07) M_{sun}, a peak Eddington ratio lambda = 0.17 +/- 0.11 and a binary period P_{orb} = 2.2^{+0.8}_{-0.6} hr. This is the shortest period measured or estimated so far for any Galactic BH X-ray binary. If the donor star is a main-sequence dwarf, such a period corresponds to the evolutionary stage where orbital shrinking is driven by gravitational radiation and the star has regained contact with its Roche lobe (low end of the period gap). The three Galactic BHs with the shortest period (<~3 hr) are also those with the highest vertical distance from the Galactic plane (>~2 kpc). The Ly$\alpha$ emission is an important tracer of neutral gas in a circum-galactic medium (CGM) around high-z QSOs. The origin of Lya emission around QSOs is still under debate which has significant implications for galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper, we study Ly$\alpha$ nebulae around two high redshift QSOs, SDSS J141935.58+525710.7 at $z=3.218$ (hereafter QSO1) and SDSS J141813.40+525240.4 at $z=3.287$ (hereafter QSO2), from the miniJPAS survey within the AEGIS field. Using the contiguous narrow-band (NB) images from the miniJPAS survey and SDSS spectra, we analyzed their morphology, nature, and origin. We report the serendipitous detection of double-core Ly\al\ morphology around two QSOs which is rarely seen among other QSOs. The separations of the two Ly\al~cores are 11.07 $\pm$ 2.26 kpcs (1.47 $\pm$ 0.3$^{\prime\prime}$) and 9.73 $\pm$ 1.55 kpcs (1.31 $\pm$ 0.21$^{\prime\prime}$) with Ly$\alpha$~line luminosities of $\sim$ 3.35 $\times 10^{44}$ erg s $^{-1} $ and $\sim$ 6.99 $\times$ 10$^{44}$ erg s $^{-1}$ for QSO1 and QSO2, respectively. The miniJPAS NB images show evidence of extended Ly$\alpha$ and CIV morphology for both QSOs and extended HeII morphology for QSO1. These two QSOs may be potential candidates for the new enormous Lyman alpha nebula (ELAN) found from the miniJPAS survey due to their extended morphology in the shallow depth and relatively high Ly$\alpha$ luminosities. We suggest that galactic outflows are the major powering mechanism for the double-core Ly$\alpha$ morphology. Considering the relatively shallow exposures of miniJPAS, the objects found here could be the tip of the iceberg of a promising number of such objects that will be uncovered in the upcoming full J-PAS survey and deep IFU observations with 8-10m telescopes will be essential for constraining the underlying physical mechanism that is responsible for the double-cored morphology., Comment: Five figures and two tables (Accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics)

We present the discovery and multi-wavelength characterization of SRGA J181414.6-225604, a Galactic hard X-ray transient discovered during the ongoing SRG/ART-XC sky survey. Using data from the Palomar Gattini-IR survey, we identify a spatially and temporally coincident variable infrared (IR) source, IRAS 18111-2257, and classify it as a very late-type (M7-M8), long period ($1502 \pm 24$ days) and luminous ($M_K\approx -9.9 \pm 0.2$) O-rich Mira donor star located at a distance of $\approx 14.6^{+2.9}_{-2.3}$ kpc. Combining multi-color photometric data over the last $\approx 25$ years, we show that the IR counterpart underwent a recent (starting $\approx 800$ days before the X-ray flare) enhanced mass loss (reaching $\approx 2.1 \times 10^{-5}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) episode resulting in an expanding dust shell obscuring the underlying star. Multi-epoch follow-up from Swift, NICER and NuSTAR reveal a $\approx 200$ day long X-ray outburst reaching a peak luminosity of $L_X \approx 2.5 \times 10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$, characterized by a heavily absorbed ($N_{\rm H} \approx 6\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) X-ray spectrum consistent with an optically thick Comptonized plasma. The X-ray spectral and timing behavior suggest the presence of clumpy wind accretion together with a dense ionized nebula overabundant in silicate material surrounding the compact object. Together, we show that SRGA J181414.6-225604 is a new symbiotic X-ray binary in outburst, triggered by an intense dust formation episode of a highly evolved donor. We study the spectral evolution of the black hole candidate EXO 1846$-$031 during its 2019 outburst, in the 1--150 keV band,with the {\it {Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope}}. The continuum spectrum is well modelled with an absorbed disk-blackbody plus cutoff power-law, in the hard, intermediate and soft states. In addition, we detect an $\approx$6.6 keV Fe emission line in the hard intermediate state. Throughout the soft intermediate and soft states, the fitted inner disk radius remains almost constant; we suggest that it has settled at the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). However, in the hard and hard intermediate states, the apparent inner radius was unphysically small (smaller than ISCO), even after accounting for the Compton scattering of some of the disk photons by the corona in the fit. We argue that this is the result of a high hardening factor, $f_{\rm col}\approx2.0-2.7$, in the early phases of outburst evolution, well above the canonical value of 1.7 suitable to a steady disk. We suggest that the inner disk radius was close to ISCO already in the low/hard state. Furthermore, we propose that this high value of hardening factor in the relatively hard state is probably caused by the additional illuminating of the coronal irradiation onto the disk. Additionally, we estimate the spin parameter with the continuum-fitting method, over a range of plausible black hole masses and distances. We compare our results with the spin measured with the reflection-fitting method and find that the inconsistency of the two results is partly caused by the different choices of $f_{\rm col}$., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

We present a detailed study of the evolution of the Galactic black hole transient GRS 1716-249 during its 2016-2017 outburst at optical (Las Cumbres Observatory), mid-infrared (Very Large Telescope), near-infrared (Rapid Eye Mount telescope), and ultraviolet (the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope) wavelengths, along with archival radio and X-ray data. We show that the optical/near-infrared and UV emission of the source mainly originates from a multi-temperature accretion disk, while the mid-infrared and radio emission are dominated by synchrotron emission from a compact jet. The optical/UV flux density is correlated with the X-ray emission when the source is in the hard state, consistent with an X-ray irradiated accretion disk with an additional contribution from the viscous disk during the outburst fade. We also report the long-term optical light curve of the source and find that the quiescent i-band magnitude is 21.39$\pm$0.15 mag. Furthermore, we discuss how previous estimates of the system parameters of the source are based on various incorrect assumptions, and so are likely to be inaccurate. By comparing our GRS 1716-249 dataset to those of other outbursting black hole X-ray binaries, we find that while GRS 1716-249 shows similar X-ray behaviour, it is noticeably optically fainter, if the literature distance of 2.4 kpc is adopted. Using several lines of reasoning, we argue that the source distance is further than previously assumed in the literature, likely within 4-17 kpc, with a most likely range of $\sim$4-8 kpc., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

NGC 1313 X-2 is one of the few known pulsating ultraluminous X-ray sources (PULXs), and so is thought to contain a neutron star that accretes at highly super-Eddington rates. However, the physics of this accretion remains to be determined. Here we report the results of two simultaneous XMM-Newton and HST observations of this PULX taken to observe two distinct X-ray behaviours as defined from its Swift light curve. We find that the X-ray spectrum of the PULX is best described by the hard ultraluminous (HUL) regime during the observation taken in the lower flux, lower variability amplitude behaviour; its spectrum changes to a broadened disc during the higher flux, higher variability amplitude epoch. However, we see no accompanying changes in the optical/UV fluxes, with the only difference being a reduction in flux in the near-IR as the X-ray flux increased. We attempt to fit irradiation models to explain the UV/optical/IR fluxes but they fail to provide meaningful constraints. Instead, a physical model for the system leads us to conclude that the optical light is dominated by a companion O/B star, albeit with an IR excess that may be indicative of a jet. We discuss how these results may be consistent with the precession of the inner regions of the accretion disc leading to changes in the observed X-ray properties, but not the optical, and whether we should expect to observe reprocessed emission from ULXs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. The symbiotic X-ray binary Sct X-1 was suggested as the first known neutron star accreting from a red supergiant companion. Although known for nearly 50 years, detailed characterization of the donor remains lacking, particularly due to the extremely high reddening towards the source ($A_V\gtrsim25$ mag). Here, we present i) improved localization of the counterpart using Gaia and Chandra observations, ii) the first broadband infrared spectrum ($\approx1-5\,\mu$m; $R\approx 2000$) obtained with SpeX on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and iii) $J$-band light curve from the Palomar Gattini-IR survey. The infrared spectrum is characterized by i) deep water absorption features (H$_2$O index $\approx 40$%), ii) strong TiO, VO and CO features, and iii) weak/absent CN lines. We show that these features are inconsistent with known red supergiants, but suggest a M8-9 III type O-rich Mira donor star. We report the discovery of large amplitude ($\Delta J\approx3.5$ mag) periodic photometric variability suggesting a pulsation period of $621\pm36\,{\rm(systematic)}\pm8\,{\rm(statistical)}$ days, which we use to constrain the donor to be a relatively luminous Mira ($M_K=-8.6\pm0.3$ mag) at a distance of $3.6^{+0.8}_{-0.7}$ kpc. Comparing these characteristics to recent models, we find the donor to be consistent with a $\approx 3-5$ M$_\odot$ star at an age of $\approx 0.1-0.3$ Gyr. Together, we show that Sct X-1 was previously mis-classified as an evolved High Mass X-ray Binary; instead it is an intermediate mass system with the first confirmed Mira donor in an X-ray binary. We discuss the implications of Mira donors in symbiotic X-ray binaries, and highlight the potential of wide-field infrared time domain surveys and broadband infrared spectroscopy to unveil their demographics., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. We have studied the unusual time variability of an ultraluminous X-ray source in M 101, 4XMM J140314.2$+$541806 (henceforth, J1403), using Chandra and XMM-Newton data. Over the last two decades, J1403 has shown short-duration outbursts with an X-ray luminosity $\sim1-3 \times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and longer intervals at luminosities $\sim0.5-1 \times 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The bimodal behaviour and fast outburst evolution (sometimes only a few days) are more consistent with an accretor/propeller scenario for a neutron star than with the canonical outburst cycles of stellar-mass black holes. If this scenario is correct, the luminosities in the accretor and propeller states suggest a fast spin ($P \approx$ 5 ms) and a low surface magnetic field ($B \sim 10^{10}$ G), despite our identification of J1403 as a high-mass X-ray binary. The most striking property of J1403 is the presence of strong $\sim$600-s quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs), mostly around frequencies of $\approx 1.3-1.8$ mHz, found at several epochs during the ultraluminous regime. We illustrate the properties of such QPOs, in particular their frequency and amplitude changes between and within observations, with a variety of techniques (Fast Fourier Transforms, Lomb-Scargle periodograms, weighted wavelet Z-transform analysis). The QPO frequency range $<$10 mHz is an almost unexplored regime in X-ray binaries and ultraluminous X-ray sources. We compare our findings with the (few) examples of very low frequency variability found in other accreting sources, and discuss possible explanations (Lense-Thirring precession of the inner flow or outflow; radiation pressure limit-cycle instability; marginally stable He burning on the neutron star surface)., Comment: 23 pages, 29 figures, 5 tables. We present an analysis of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) population in 75 Virgo cluster late-type galaxies, including all those with a star formation rate >~ 1 M_{sun}/yr and a representative sample of the less star-forming ones. This study is based on 110 observations obtained over 20 years with the Chandra X-ray Observatory Advanced Camera for Imaging Spectroscopy. As part of a Large Chandra Program, new observations were obtained for 52 of these 75 galaxies. The data are complete to a sensitivity of about 10^{39} erg/s, with a typical detection limit of about 3 x 10^{38} erg/s for the majority of the sources. The catalogue contains about 80 ULXs (0.3-10 keV luminosity >10^{39} erg/s), and provides their location, observed flux, de-absorbed luminosity, and (for the 25 most luminous ones) simple X-ray spectral properties. We discuss the ULX luminosity function in relation to the mass and star formation rate of the sample galaxies. We show that recent models of low-mass plus high-mass X-ray binary populations (scaling with stellar mass and star formation rate, respectively) are mostly consistent with our observational results. We tentatively identify the most luminous X-ray source in the sample (a source in IC 3322A with L_{X} ~ 6 x 10^{40} erg/s) as a recent supernova or its young remnant. Building upon three late-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster with both a predicted black hole mass of less than $\sim$10$^5$ M$_{\odot}$ and a centrally-located X-ray point-source, we reveal 11 more such galaxies, more than tripling the number of active intermediate-mass black hole candidates among this population. Moreover, this amounts to a 36$\pm$8% X-ray detection rate (despite the sometimes high, X-ray-absorbing, HI column densities), compared to just 10$\pm$5% for (the largely HI-free) dwarf early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster. The expected contribution of X-ray binaries from the galaxies' inner field stars is negligible. Moreover, given that both the spiral and dwarf galaxies contain nuclear star clusters, the above inequality appears to disfavor X-ray binaries in nuclear star clusters. The higher occupation, or rather detection, fraction among the spiral galaxies may instead reflect an enhanced cool gas/fuel supply and Eddington ratio. Indeed, four of the 11 new X-ray detections are associated with known LINERs or LINER/HII composites. For all (four) of the new detections for which the X-ray flux was strong enough to establish the spectral energy distribution in the Chandra band, it is consistent with power-law spectra. Furthermore, the X-ray emission from the source with the highest flux (NGC 4197: $L_X \approx 10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$) suggests a non-stellar-mass black hole if the X-ray spectrum corresponds to the `low/hard state'. Follow-up observations to further probe the black hole masses, and prospects for spatially resolving the gravitational spheres-of-influence around intermediate-mass black holes, are reviewed in some detail., Comment: To appear in ApJ (accepted Sep. 2021)

Galaxies can grow through their mutual gravitational attraction and subsequent union. While orbiting a regular high-surface-brightness galaxy, the body of a low-mass galaxy can be stripped away. However, the stellar heart of the infalling galaxy, if represented by a tightly-bound nuclear star cluster, is more resilient. From archival Hubble Space Telescope images, we have discovered a red, tidally-stretched star cluster positioned ~5 arcseconds (~400 pc in projection) from, and pointing toward the center of, the post-merger spiral galaxy NGC 4424. The star cluster, which we refer to as `Nikhuli', has a near-infrared luminosity of (6.88+/-1.85)x10^6 L_{solar,F160W} and likely represents the nucleus of a captured/wedded galaxy. Moreover, from our Chandra X-ray Observatory image, Nikhuli is seen to contain a high-energy X-ray point source, with L_{0.5-8 keV} = 6.31^{+7.50}_{-3.77}x10^{38} erg/s (90% confidence). We argue that this is more likely to be an active massive black hole than an X-ray binary. Lacking an outward-pointing comet-like appearance, the stellar structure of Nikhuli favors infall rather than the ejection from a gravitational-wave recoil event. A minor merger with a low-mass early-type galaxy may have sown a massive black hole, aided an X-shaped pseudobulge, and be sewing a small bulge. The stellar mass and the velocity dispersion of NGC 4424 predict a central black hole of (0.6-1.0)x10^5 M_solar, similar to the expected intermediate-mass black hole in Nikhuli, and suggestive of a black hole supply mechanism for bulgeless late-type galaxies. We may potentially be witnessing black hole seeding by capture and sinking, with a nuclear star cluster the delivery vehicle., Comment: To appear in ApJ (accepted 21 September 2021)

We report second-timescale infrared photometry of the nova V1674 Her using Palomar Gattini-IR. These observations constitute the first infrared and highest temporal resolution data (resolution of ~ 0.84 s) of the nova reported to date. PGIR observed in this fast readout mode for more than an hour on three nights between 3 and 6 days after discovery. We searched for periodic variability using a Lomb-Scargle periodogram and did not detect anything down to a three sigma upper limit of 0.093 mag. This suggests that the periodic variability detected in the nova by Patterson et al. 2021 was lower by at least a factor of about 1.65 in the first week of the eruption., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure

We present optical and infrared (IR) light curves of NaSt1, also known as Wolf-Rayet (WR) 122, with observations from Palomar Gattini-IR (PGIR), the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), the Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT), the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), and the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). We identify a $P=309.7\pm0.7$ d photometric period from the optical and IR light curves that reveal periodic, sinusoidal variability between 2014 July and 2021 July. We also present historical IR light curves taken between 1983 July and 1989 May, which show variability consistent with the period of the present-day light curves. In the past, NaSt1 was brighter in the $J$ band with larger variability amplitudes than the present-day PGIR values, suggesting that NaSt1 exhibits variability on longer ($\gtrsim$ decade) timescales. Sinusoidal fits to the recent optical and IR light curves show that the amplitude of NaSt1's variability differs at various wavelengths and also reveal significant phase offsets of $17.0\pm2.5$ d between the ZTF $r$ and PGIR $J$ light curves. We interpret the $310$ d photometric period from NaSt1 as the orbital period of an enshrouded massive binary. We suggest that the photometric variability of NaSt1 may arise from variations in the line-of-sight optical depth toward circumstellar optical/IR emitting regions throughout its orbit due to colliding-wind dust formation. We speculate that past mass transfer in NaSt1 may have been triggered by Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF) during an eruptive phase of an Ofpe/WN9 star. We studied the apparent galaxy pair NGC 1232 / NGC 1232A with Chandra, looking for evidence of interactions and collisions. We report that there is no cloud of diffuse emission in NGC 1232, contrary to previous claims in the literature. Instead, we find that the small "companion" galaxy NGC 1232A contains three ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with peak 0.3-10 keV luminosities above 10^{40} erg/s (assuming a cosmological distance of 93 Mpc for this galaxy). The nova rate in the Milky Way remains largely uncertain, despite its vital importance in constraining models of Galactic chemical evolution as well as understanding progenitor channels for Type Ia supernovae. The rate has been previously estimated in the range of $\approx10-300$ yr$^{-1}$, either based on extrapolations from a handful of very bright optical novae or the nova rates in nearby galaxies; both methods are subject to debatable assumptions. The total discovery rate of optical novae remains much smaller ($\approx5-10$ yr$^{-1}$) than these estimates, even with the advent of all-sky optical time domain surveys. Here, we present a systematic sample of 12 spectroscopically confirmed Galactic novae detected in the first 17 months of Palomar Gattini-IR (PGIR), a wide-field near-infrared time domain survey. Operating in $J$-band ($\approx1.2$ $\mu$m) that is relatively immune to dust extinction, the extinction distribution of the PGIR sample is highly skewed to large extinction values ($> 50$% of events obscured by $A_V\gtrsim5$ mag). Using recent estimates for the distribution of mass and dust in the Galaxy, we show that the observed extinction distribution of the PGIR sample is commensurate with that expected from dust models. The PGIR extinction distribution is inconsistent with that reported in previous optical searches (null hypothesis probability $< 0.01$%), suggesting that a large population of highly obscured novae have been systematically missed in previous optical searches. We perform the first quantitative simulation of a $3\pi$ time domain survey to estimate the Galactic nova rate using PGIR, and derive a rate of $\approx 46.0^{+12.5}_{-12.4}$ yr$^{-1}$. We are undertaking the first systematic infrared (IR) census of R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars in the Milky Way, beginning with IR light curves from the Palomar Gattini IR (PGIR) survey. PGIR is a 30 cm $J$-band telescope with a 25 deg$^{2}$ camera that is surveying 18000 deg$^{2}$ of the northern sky ($\delta>-28^{o}$) at a cadence of 2 days. We present PGIR light curves for 922 RCB candidates selected from a mid-IR color-based catalog (Tisserand et al. 2020). Of these 922, 149 are promising RCB candidates as they show pulsations or declines similar to RCB stars. Majority of the candidates that are not RCB stars are either long period variables (LPVs) or RV-Tauri stars. We identify IR color-based criteria to better distinguish between RCB stars and LPVs. As part of a pilot spectroscopic run, we obtained NIR spectra for 26 out of the 149 promising candidates and spectroscopically confirm 11 new RCB stars. We detect strong He I $\lambda 10830$ features in spectra of all RCB stars, likely originating within high velocity (200-400 km-s$^{-1}$) winds in their atmospheres. 9 of these RCB stars show $^{12}$C$^{16}$O and $^{12}$C$^{18}$O molecular absorption features, suggesting that they are formed through a white dwarf merger. We detect quasi-periodic pulsations in the light curves of 5 RCB stars. The periods range between 30-125 days and likely originate from the strange-mode instability in these stars. Some ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are surrounded by collisionally ionized bubbles, larger and more energetic than supernova remnants: they are evidence of the powerful outflows associated with super-Eddington X-ray sources. We illustrate the most recent addition to this class: a huge (350 pc x 220 pc in diameter) bubble around a ULX in NGC 5585. We modelled the X-ray properties of the ULX (a broadened-disc source with L_X ~ 2-4 x 10^{39} erg/s) from Chandra and XMM-Newton, and identified its likely optical counterpart in Hubble Space Telescope images. We used the Large Binocular Telescope to study the optical emission from the ionized bubble. We show that the line emission spectrum is indicative of collisional ionization. We refine the method for inferring the shock velocity from the width of the optical lines. We derive an average shock velocity ~125 km/s, which corresponds to a dynamical age of ~600,000 years for the bubble, and an average mechanical power P_w ~ 10^{40} erg/s; thus, the mechanical power is a few times higher than the current photon luminosity. With Very Large Array observations, we discovered and resolved a powerful radio bubble with the same size as the optical bubble, and a 1.4-GHz luminosity ~10^{35} erg/s, at the upper end of the luminosity range for this type of source. This paper is based on a proposal submitted for a BRICS astronomy flagship program, which was presented at the 2019 meeting of the BRICS Astronomy Working Group, held in Rio de Janeiro from 29 September to 2 October 2019. The future prospects for the detection and study of transient phenomena in the Universe heralds a new era in time domain astronomy. The case is presented for a dedicated BRICS-wide flagship program to develop a network of ground-based optical telescopes for an all-sky survey to detect short lived optical transients and to allow follow-up of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger transient objects. This will leverage existing and planned new facilities within the BRICS countries and will also draw on the opportunities presented by other multi-wavelength space- and ground-based facilities that exist within the BRICS group. The proposed optical network would initially perform followup observations on new transients using existing telescopes. This would later expand to include a new global network of $\sim$70 wide-field 1-m telescopes which will cover the entire sky, simultaneously, with a cadence of less than a few hours. This realization would represent a ground-breaking and unique global capability, presenting many scientific opportunities and associated spin-off benefits to all BRICS countries., Comment: 39 pages, 5 figures. Do external galaxies host planetary systems? Many lines of reasoning suggest that the answer must be 'yes'. In the foreseeable future, however, the question cannot be answered by the methods most successful in our own Galaxy. We report on a different approach which focuses on bright X-ray sources (XRSs). M51-ULS-1b is the first planet candidate to be found because it produces a full, short-lived eclipse of a bright XRS. M51-ULS-1b has a most probable radius slightly smaller than Saturn. It orbits one of the brightest XRSs in the external galaxy M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy, located 8.6 Megaparsecs from Earth. It is the first candidate for a planet in an external galaxy. The binary it orbits, M51-ULS-1, is young and massive. One of the binary components is a stellar remnant, either a neutron star (NS) or black hole (BH), and the other is a massive star. The Galactic magnetar SGR1935+2154 has been reported to produce the first known example of a bright millisecond duration radio burst (FRB 200428) similar to the cosmological population of fast radio bursts (FRBs), bolstering the association of FRBs to active magnetars. The detection of a coincident bright X-ray burst has revealed the first observed multi-wavelength counterpart of a FRB. However, the search for similar emission at optical wavelengths has been hampered by the high inferred extinction on the line of sight. Here, we present results from the first search for second-timescale emission from the source at near-infrared wavelengths using the Palomar Gattini-IR observing system in J-band, made possible by a recently implemented detector read-out mode that allowed for short exposure times of 0.84 s with 99.9% observing efficiency. With a total observing time of 12 hours (47728 images) on source, we place median $3\,\sigma$ limits on the second-timescale emission of $< 20$ mJy (13.1 AB mag). We present non-detection limits from epochs of four simultaneous X-ray bursts detected by the Insight-{\it HXMT} and {\it NuSTAR} telescopes during our observing campaign. The limits translate to an extinction corrected fluence limit of $< 125$ Jy ms for an estimated extinction of $A_J = 2.0$ mag. These limits provide the most stringent constraints to date on the fluence of flares at frequencies of $\sim 10^{14}$ Hz, and constrain the ratio of the near-infrared (NIR) fluence to that of coincident X-ray bursts to $R_{\rm NIR} < 2.5 \times 10^{-2}$. Our observations were sensitive enough to easily detect a near-infrared counterpart of FRB 200428 if the NIR emission falls on the same power law as that observed across its radio to X-ray spectrum. The non-detection of NIR emission around the coincident X-ray bursts constrains the fluence index of the brightest burst to be steeper than $0.35$., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJL. SiTian is an ambitious ground-based all-sky optical monitoring project, developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The concept is an integrated network of dozens of 1-m-class telescopes deployed partly in China and partly at various other sites around the world. The main science goals are the detection, identification and monitoring of optical transients (such as gravitational wave events, fast radio bursts, supernovae) on the largely unknown timescales of less than 1 day; SiTian will also provide a treasure trove of data for studies of AGN, quasars, variable stars, planets, asteroids, and microlensing events. To achieve those goals, SiTian will scan at least 10,000 square deg of sky every 30 min, down to a detection limit of $V \approx 21$ mag. The scans will produce simultaneous light-curves in 3 optical bands. In addition, SiTian will include at least three 4-m telescopes specifically allocated for follow-up spectroscopy of the most interesting targets. The mass, origin and evolutionary stage of the binary system LB-1 has been the subject of intense debate, following the claim that it hosts an $\sim$70$M_{\odot}$ black hole, in stark contrast with the expectations for stellar remnants in the Milky Way. We conducted a high-resolution, phase-resolved spectroscopic study of the near-infrared Paschen lines in this system, using the 3.5-m telescope at Calar Alto Observatory. We find that Pa$\beta$ and Pa$\gamma$ (after proper subtraction of the stellar absorption component) are well fitted with a standard double-peaked model, typical of disk emission. We measured the velocity shifts of the red and blue peaks at 28 orbital phases: the line center has an orbital motion in perfect antiphase with the stellar motion, and the radial velocity amplitude ranges from 8 to 13 km/s for different choices of lines and profile modelling. We interpret this curve as proof that the disk is tracing the orbital motion of the primary, ruling out the circumbinary disk and the hierarchical triple scenarios. The phase-averaged peak-to-peak half-separation (proxy for the projected rotational velocity of the outer disk) is $\sim$70 km s$^{-1}$, larger than the stellar orbital velocity and also inconsistent with a circumbinary disk. From those results, we infer a primary mass 4--8 times higher than the secondary mass. Moreover, we show that the ratio of the blue and red peaks (V/R intensity ratio) has a sinusoidal behaviour in phase with the secondary star, which can be interpreted as the effect of external irradiation by the secondary star on the outer disk. Finally, we briefly discuss our findings in the context of alternative scenarios recently proposed for LB-1. We present a new catalogue of radio sources in the face-on spiral galaxy M83. Radio observations taken in 2011, 2015, and 2017 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 5.5 and 9 GHz have detected 270 radio sources. Although a small number of these sources are background extragalactic sources, most are either H II regions or supernova remnants (SNRs) within M83 itself. Three of the six historical supernovae are detected, as is the very young remnant that had been identified in a recent study, which is likely the result of a supernova that exploded in the last ~100 years but was missed. All of these objects are generally fading with time. Confusion limits our ability to measure the radio emission from a number of the SNRs in M83, but 64 were detected in unconfused regions, and these have the approximate power-law luminosity function which has been observed in other galaxies. The SNRs in M83 are systematically smaller in diameter and brighter than those that have been detected at radio wavelengths in M33. A number of the radio sources are coincident with X-ray sources in M83; most of these coincident sources turn out to be supernova remnants. Our dual frequency observations are among the most sensitive to date for a spiral galaxy outside the Local Group; despite this we were not able to place realistic constraints on the spectral indices, and as a result, it was not possible to search for supernova remnants based on their radio properties alone., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, 8 tables. We present the spectral and timing evolution of the persistent black hole X-ray binary GRS 1758-258 based on almost 12 years of observations using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array. While the source was predominantly found in the hard state during this time, it entered the thermally dominated soft state seven times. In the soft state GRS 1758-258 shows a strong decline in flux above 3 keV rather than the pivoting flux around 10 keV more commonly shown by black hole transients. In its 3-20 keV hardness intensity diagram, GRS 1758-258 shows a hysteresis of hard and soft state fluxes typical for transient sources in outburst. The RXTE-PCA and RXTE-ASM long-term light curves do not show any orbital modulations in the range of 2 to 30 d. However, in the dynamic power spectra significant peaks drift between 18.47d and 18.04d for the PCA data, while less significant signatures between 19d and 20d are seen for the ASM data as well as for the Swift/BAT data. All stellar mass black holes have hitherto been identified by X-rays emitted by gas that is accreting onto the black hole from a companion star. These systems are all binaries with black holes below 30 M$_{\odot}$$^{1-4}$. Theory predicts, however, that X-ray emitting systems form a minority of the total population of star-black hole binaries$^{5,6}$. When the black hole is not accreting gas, it can be found through radial velocity measurements of the motion of the companion star. Here we report radial velocity measurements of a Galactic star, LB-1, which is a B-type star, taken over two years. We find that the motion of the B-star and an accompanying H$\alpha$ emission line require the presence of a dark companion with a mass of $68^{+11}_{-13}$ M$_{\odot}$, which can only be a black hole. The long orbital period of 78.9 days shows that this is a wide binary system. The gravitational wave experiments have detected similarly massive black holes$^{7,8}$, but forming such massive ones in a high-metallicity environment would be extremely challenging to current stellar evolution theories$^{9-11}$., Comment: Published in Nature on Nov 28, 2019

Microquasars are neutron star or black hole X-ray binaries with jets. These jets can create shock-ionized bubbles of hot plasma that can masquerade as peculiar supernova remnants (SNRs) in extragalactic surveys. To see if this is the case in the well-studied spiral galaxy M83, where one microquasar candidate (M83-MQ1) has already been identified, we studied the properties of nine SNR candidates, selected because of their elongated or irregular morphology, from the set of previously identified SNRs in that galaxy. Using multiwavelength data from Chandra, the Hubble Space Telescope, Gemini, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we found that at least six of our nine sources are best interpreted as SNRs. For one source, we do not have enough observational data to explain its linear morphology. Another source shows a nebular optical spectrum dominated by photo-ionization by O stars, but its excess [Fe II] and radio luminosity suggest a possible hidden SNR. Finally, one source (S2) shows an elongated structure of ionized gas, two radio sources along that line, and an accretion-powered X-ray source in between them (the Chandra source L14-139). While S2 could be a chance alignment of multiple SNRs and one X-ray binary, it seems more likely that it is a single physical structure powered by the jet from the accreting compact object. In the latter case, the size and luminosity of S2 suggest a kinetic power of around 10^{40} erg/s, in the same class as the most powerful microquasars in the local universe (e.g., S26 in NGC7793 and SS433 in our own Galaxy)., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. (Abridged) Palomar Gattini-IR is a new wide-field, near-infrared robotic time domain survey operating at Palomar Observatory. Using a 30 cm telescope mounted with a H2RG detector, Gattini-IR achieves a field of view of 25 sq. deg. with a pixel scale of 8.7" in J-band. Here, we describe the system design, survey operations, data processing system and on-sky performance of Palomar Gattini-IR. As a part of the nominal survey, Gattini-IR scans $\approx 7500$ square degrees of the sky every night to a median 5$\sigma$ depth of $15.7$ AB mag outside the Galactic plane. The survey covers $\approx 15000$ square degrees of the sky visible from Palomar with a median cadence of 2 days. A real-time data processing system produces stacked science images from dithered raw images taken on sky, together with PSF-fit source catalogs and transient candidates identified from subtractions within a median delay of $\approx 4$ hours from the time of observation. The calibrated data products achieve an astrometric accuracy (RMS) of $\approx 0.7$" with respect to Gaia DR2 for sources with S/N $> 10$, and better than $\approx 0.35$" for sources brighter than $\approx 12$ Vega mag. The photometric accuracy (RMS) achieved in the PSF-fit source catalogs is better than $\approx 3$% for sources brighter than $\approx 12$ Vega mag, as calibrated against the 2MASS catalog. With a field of view $\approx 40\times$ larger than any other existing near infrared imaging instrument, Gattini-IR is probing the reddest and dustiest transients in the local universe such as dust obscured supernovae in nearby galaxies, novae behind large columns of extinction within the galaxy, reddened micro-lensing events in the Galactic plane and variability from cool and dust obscured stars. Stellar rotation plays a key role in stellar activity. The rotation period could be detected through light curve variations caused by starspots. Kepler provides two types of light curves, one is the Pre-search Data Conditioning (PDC) light curves, the other is the Simple Aperture Photometer (SAP) light curves. Compared with the PDC light curves, the SAP light curves keep the long-term trend, relatively suitable for searches of long period signals. However, SAP data are inflicted by some artefacts such as quarterly rolls and instrumental errors, making it difficult to find the physical periods in the SAP light curves. We explore a systematic approach based on the light curve pre-processing, period detection and candidate selection. We also develop a simulated light curve test to estimate our detection limits for the SAP-like LCs. After applying our method to the raw SAP light curves, we found more than 1000 main-sequence stars with the period longer than 30 days, 165 are newly discovered. Considering the potential flaw of the SAP, we also inspect the newly found objects with photometry methods, and most of our periodical signals are confirmed., Comment: 18 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using archival data from the Chandra X-ray telescope, we have measured the spatial extent of the hot interstellar gas in a sample of 49 nearby interacting galaxy pairs, mergers, and merger remnants. For systems with SFR > 1 M(sun)/yr, the volume and mass of hot gas are strongly and linearly correlated with the star formation rate (SFR). This supports the idea that stellar/supernovae feedback dominates the production of hot gas in these galaxies. We compared the mass of X-ray-emitting hot gas Mx(gas) with the molecular and atomic hydrogen interstellar gas masses in these galaxies (M(H2) and M(HI), respectively), using published carbon monoxide and 21 cm HI measurements. Systems with higher SFRs have larger Mx(gas)/(M(H2) + M(HI)) ratios on average, in agreement with recent numerical simulations of star formation and feedback in merging galaxies. The Mx(gas)/(M(H2) + M(HI)) ratio also increases with dust temperature on average. The ratio Mx(gas)/SFR is anti-correlated with the IRAS 60 micron to 100 micron flux ratio and with the Spitzer 3.6 micron to 24 micron. These trends may be due to variations in the spatial density of young stars, the stellar age, the ratio of young to old stars, the initial mass function, and/or the efficiency of stellar feedback. Galaxies with low SFR (<1 M(sun)/yr) and high K band luminosities may have an excess of hot gas relative to the relation for higher SFR galaxies, while galaxies with low K band luminosities (and therefore low stellar masses) may have a deficiency in hot gas, but our sample is not large enough for strong statistical significance., Comment: Astronomical Journal, in press

We discovered and studied an ultraluminous X-ray source (CXOU J203451.1+601043) that appeared in the spiral galaxy NGC 6946 at some point between 2008 February and 2012 May, and has remained at luminosities $\approx$2-4 $\times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in all observations since then. Our spectral modelling shows that the source is generally soft, but with spectral variability from epoch to epoch. Using standard empirical categories of the ultraluminous regimes, we find that CXOU J203451.1+601043 was consistent with a broadened disk state in 2012, but was in a transitional state approaching the super-soft regime in 2016, with substantial down-scattering of the hard photons (similar, for example, to the ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 55). It has since hardened again in 2018-2019 without any significant luminosity change. The most outstanding property of CXOU J203451.1+601043 is a strong emission line at an energy of of $(0.66 \pm 0.01)$ keV, with equivalent width of $\approx$100 eV, and de-absorbed line luminosity of $\approx$2 $\times 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$, seen when the continuum spectrum was softest. We identify the line as OVIII Ly$\alpha$ (rest frame energy of 0.654 keV); we interpret it as a strong indicator of a massive outflow. Our finding supports the connection between two independent observational signatures of the wind in super-Eddington sources: a lower temperature of the Comptonized component, and the presence of emission lines in the soft X-ray band. We speculate that the donor star is oxygen-rich: a CO or O-Ne-Mg white dwarf in an ultracompact binary.
