After shipment to the Daresbury Lab and return to Fermilab, the prototype HB650 cryomodule underwent another phase of 2K RF testing to ascertain any performance issues that may have arisen from the transport of the cryomodule. While measurements taken at room temperature after the conclusion of shipment indicated that there were no negative impacts on cavity alignment, beamline vacuum, or cavity frequency, testing at 2K was required to validate other aspects such as tuner operation, cavity coupling, cryogenic system integrity, and cavity performance. The PIP-II Project will see international shipment of cryomodules from Europe to the United States, and as such, the shocks which can occur during shipment pose a risk to the internal components. Of particular concern is the coupler ceramic window and surrounding brazes, which will see stresses during an excitation event. Since the antenna design is new, and because of the setback failure would create, a cyclic stress test was devised for the antenna. This paper presents the experimental methods, setup, and results of the test.

Five 325 MHz high-power couplers will be integrated into the pre-production Single Spoke Resonator Type-II (ppSSR2) cryomodule for the PIP-II project at Fermilab. Couplers were procured by both Fermilab and IJCLAB for this effort. The design of the coupler is described, including design optimizations from the previous generation. This paper then describes the coupler life cycle, including design, manufacturing, and assembly, along with the lessons learned at each stage.

Increasing the Fermilab Main Injector (MI) beam power above ~1.2 MW requires replacement of the 8 GeV Booster by a higher intensity alternative. Earlier, rapid-cycling synchrotron and linac solutions were considered for this purpose. In this paper, we consider the linac version that produces 8 GeV H- beam for injection into the Recycler Ring (RR) or MI The new linac takes ~1 GeV beam from the PIP-II linac and accelerates it to ~ 2 GeV in a 650 MHz SRF linac, and then accelerates to ~8 GeV in an SRF pulsed linac using 1300 MHz cryomodules. The linac components incorporate recent improvements in SRF technology. Radio frequency superconductivity is a cornerstone technology for many future HEP particle accelerators and experiments from colliders to proton drivers for neutrino facilities to searches for dark matter. While the performance of superconducting RF (SRF) cavities has improved significantly over the last decades, and the SRF technology has enabled new applications, the proposed HEP facilities and experiments pose new challenges. To address these challenges, the field continues to generate new ideas and there seems to be a vast room for improvements. The United States has a rich history in high energy particle accelerators and colliders -- both lepton and hadron machines, which have enabled several major discoveries in elementary particle physics. To ensure continued progress in the field, U.S. leadership as a key partner in building next generation collider facilities abroad is essential; also critically important is the exploring of options to host a future collider in the U.S. The "Snowmass" study and the subsequent Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) process provide the timely opportunity to develop strategies for both. What we do now will shape the future of our field and whether the U.S. will remain a world leader in these areas. In this white paper, we briefly discuss the US engagement in proposed collider projects abroad and describe future collider options for the U.S. We also call for initiating an integrated R\&D program for future colliders., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Following the PIP-II 800 MeV Linac, Fermilab will need an accelerator that extends from that linac to the MI injection energy of ~8 GeV, completing the modernization of the Fermilab high-intensity accelerator complex. This will maximize the beam available for neutrino production for the long baseline DUNE experiment to greater than 2.5 MW and enable a next generation of intensity frontier experiments. In this white paper, we propose an 8 GeV Linac for that purpose. The Linac consists of an extension of the PIP-II Linac to ~2 GeV using PIP-II 650 MHz SRF cryomodules, followed by a 2 -->8.0 GeV Linac composed of 1300 MHz SRF cryomodules, based upon the LCLS-II cryomodules developed at Fermilab. We present the technical and engineering design of a medium energy (10 MeV) and high average power (1 MW) electron beam accelerator intended for irradiation treatment of high volume industrial and municipal wastewater. The accelerator uses superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavity technology for producing the high average beam power with $>$90% RF to beam efficiency. The design of the accelerator is simplified and tailored for industrial settings by adopting the cryocooler conduction-cooling technique for the SRF cavity instead of a conventional liquid helium bath cryo-system. The technical design is supplemented with a detailed analysis of capital and operating cost of the accelerator. The designed accelerator can treat up to 12 million gallons per day of wastewater, requires capital of $\sim\$$8M for construction, and has $\sim$13.5 cents/ton/kGy in material processing cost.

An 8-cavity, 1.3 GHz, LCLS-II-HE cryomodule was assembled and tested at Fermilab to verify performance before the start of production. Its cavities were processed with a novel nitrogen doping treatment to improve gradient performance. The cryomodule was tested with a modified protocol to process sporadic quenches, which were observed in LCLS-II production cryomodules and are attributed to multipacting. Dedicated vertical test experiments support the attribution to multipacting. The verification cryomodule achieved an acceleration voltage of 200 MV in continuous wave mode, corresponding to an average accelerating gradient of 24.1 MV/m, significantly exceeding the specification of 173 MV. The average Q0 (3.0x10^10) also exceeded its specification (2.7x10^10). After processing, no field emission was observed up to the maximum gradient of each cavity. This report describes a concept of an EIC cooling system, based on a proven induction linac technology with a dc electron beam. The system would operate in a full energy range of proton beams (100 - 270 GeV) and would provide 50-100 A electron beams, circulating in a cooler ring for 5 ms. Every 5 ms a new electron pulse would be injected into the cooler ring to provide continuous cooling at collisions. Operations with a 10-ms cycle is possible but it will reduce the cooling rates by ~30$\%$. The system is capable of delivering the required performance in the entire EIC energy range with emittance cooling times of less than 1-2 hours.

Quality factor is a primary cost driver for high energy, continuous wave (CW) SRF linacs like the LCLS-II X-ray free electron laser currently under construction. Taking this into account, several innovations were introduced in the LCLS-II cryomodule design to push substantially beyond the previous state-of-the-art quality factor achieved in operation. This includes the first ever implementation of the nitrogen doping cavity treatment, the capability to provide high mass flow cooldown to improve expulsion of magnetic flux based on recent R&D, high performance magnetic shielding, and other critical subcomponents. To evaluate the implementation of these new cryomodule features, two prototype cryomodules were produced. In this paper, we present results from the prototype cryomodule assembled at Fermilab, which achieved unprecedented cavity quality factors of 3.0e10 at a nominal cryomodule voltage. We overview cavity performance, procedures to achieve ambient magnetic field < 5 mG at the cavity wall, and the successful demonstration of high mass flow cooldown in a cryomodule. The cavity performance under various cool down conditions are presented as well to show the impact of flux expulsion on Q0.

When a superconducting radiofrequency cavity is cooled through its critical temperature, ambient magnetic flux can become "frozen in" to the superconductor, resulting in degradation of the quality factor. This is especially problematic in applications where quality factor is a cost driver, such as in the CW linac for LCLS-II. Previously, it had been unknown how to prevent flux from being trapped during cooldown in bulk niobium cavities, but recent R&D studies showed near-full flux expulsion can be achieved through high temperature heat treatment and cooling cavities through the superconducting transition with a spatial thermal gradient over the surface. In this paper, we describe the first accelerator implementation of these procedures, in cryomodules that are currently being produced for LCLS-II. We compare the performance of cavities under different conditions of heat treatment and thermal gradient during cooldown, showing a substantial improvement in performance when both are applied, enabling cryomodules to reach and, in many cases, exceed a Q0 of ~3x10^10., Comment: 11 pages

A new test stand dedicated to Superconducting Radiofrequency (SRF) cryomodule testing, CMTS1, has been commissioned and is now in operation at Fermilab. The first device to be cooled down and powered in this facility is the prototype 1.3 GHz cryomodule assembled at Fermilab for LCLS-II. High-power electron beams are sought-after tools in support to a wide array of societal applications. This paper investigates the production of high-power electron beams by combining a high-current field-emission electron source to a superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavity. Superconducting linacs are capable of producing intense, stable, high-quality electron beams that have found widespread applications in science and industry. The 9-cell 1.3-GHz superconducting standing-wave accelerating RF cavity originally developed for $e^+/e^-$ linear-collider applications [B. Aunes, {\em et al.} Phys. Rev. ST Accel. Beams {\bf 3}, 092001 (2000)] has been broadly employed in various superconducting-linac designs. In this paper we discuss the transfer matrix of such a cavity and present its measurement performed at the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility. The experimental results are found to be in agreement with analytical calculations and numerical simulations.

The superconducting cavities in the continuous wave (CW) linacs of LCLS-II are designed to operate at 2 K, where cooling costs are very expensive. One source of heat is presented by the higher order mode (HOM) power deposited by the beam. Due to the very short bunch length--especially in L3 the final linac--the LCLS-II beam spectrum extends into the terahertz range. Ceramic absorbers, at 70 K and located between cryomodules, are meant to absorb much of this power. Project X is a multi-megawatt proton facility being developed to support a world-leading program in Intensity Frontier physics at Fermilab. The facility will support programs in elementary particle and nuclear physics, with the potential for broader applications in materials and energy research. Project X is in the development stage with a R&D program focused on front end and superconducting RF acceleration technologies, and with design concepts for a staged implementation. A multi-MW proton facility, Project X, has been proposed and is currently under development at Fermilab. We are carrying out a program of research and development aimed at integrated systems testing of critical components comprising the front end of Project X. This program, known as the Project X Injector Experiment (PXIE), is being undertaken as a key component of the larger Project X R&D program. The successful completion of this program will validate the concept for the Project X front end, thereby minimizing a primary technical risk element within Project X. PXIE is currently under construction at Fermilab and will be completed over the period FY12-17. PXIE will include an H- ion source, a CW 2.1-MeV RFQ and two superconductive RF (SRF) cryomodules providing up to 25 MeV energy gain at an average beam current of 1 mA (upgradable to 2 mA). This report summarizes the work of the Energy Frontier Higgs Boson working group of the 2013 Community Summer Study (Snowmass). We identify the key elements of a precision Higgs physics program and document the physics potential of future experimental facilities as elucidated during the Snowmass study. We study Higgs couplings to gauge boson and fermion pairs, double Higgs production for the Higgs self-coupling, its quantum numbers and $CP$-mixing in Higgs couplings, the Higgs mass and total width, and prospects for direct searches for additional Higgs bosons in extensions of the Standard Model. Our report includes projections of measurement capabilities from detailed studies of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC), a Gamma-Gamma Collider, the International Linear Collider (ILC), the Large Hadron Collider High-Luminosity Upgrade (HL-LHC), Very Large Hadron Colliders up to 100 TeV (VLHC), a Muon Collider, and a Triple-Large Electron Positron Collider (TLEP).

The Project X Injector Experiment (PXIE), a test bed for the Project X front end, will be completed at Fermilab at FY12-16. One of the challenging goals of PXIE is demonstration of the capability to form a 1 mA H- beam with an arbitrary selected bunch pattern from the initially 5 mA 162.5 MHz CW train. The bunch selection will be made in the Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) at 2.1 MeV by diverting undesired bunches to an absorber. The Project X Injector Experiment (PXIE) will serve as a prototype for the Project X front end. The aim is to validate the Project-X design and to decrease technical risks, known to be mainly related to the front end. PXIE will accelerate a 1 mA CW beam to about 25 MeV. It will consist of an ion source, LEBT, CW RFQ, MEBT, two SC cryomodules, a diagnostic section and a beam dump. A bunch-by-bunch chopper located in the MEBT section will allow formation of an arbitrary bunch structure. PXIE deviates somewhat from the current Project-X front end concept in that it provides additional instrumentation and relies on a reduced number of kickers for bunch chopping; the diagnostic section also include an RF separator to allow studying extinction of removed bunches. The paper discusses the main requirements and constraints motivating the facility layout and optics. The code SCREAM -- SuperConducting RElativistic particle Accelerator siMulation was significantly modified and improved. Some misprints in the formulae used have been fixed and a more realistic expression for the vector-sum introduced. The realistic model of Lorentz-force detuning (LFD) is developed and will be implemented to the code. A friendly GUI allows various parameters of the simulated problem to be changed easily and quickly. Effective control of various output data is provided. A change of various parameters during the simulation process is controlled by plotting the corresponding graphs "on the fly." A realistic approach to calculate the transport matrix in RF cavities is developed. It is based on joint solution of equations of longitudinal and transverse motion of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field of the linac. This field is a given by distribution (measured or calculated) of the component of the longitudinal electric field on the axis of the linac. New approach is compared with other matrix methods to solve the same problem. The comparison with code ASTRA has been carried out. Complete agreement for tracking results for a TESLA-type cavity is achieved. A beam loss in the superconducting part of the SNS linac has been observed during its commissioning and operation. Although the loss does not prevent the SNS high power operation, it results in an almost uniform irradiation of linac components and increased radiation levels in the tunnel. Multi-particle tracking could neither account for the magnitude of the observed loss nor its dependence on machine parameters. It was recently found that the loss is consistent with the intrabeam particle collisions resulting in stripping of H- ions. In frame of the development of a high resolution BPM system for the CLIC Main Linac we present the design of a cavity BPM prototype. Project X is a multi-megawatt proton facility being developed to support a world-leading program in Intensity Frontier physics at Fermilab. The facility is designed to support programs in elementary particle and nuclear physics, with possible applications to nuclear energy research. A Functional Requirements Specification has been developed in order to establish performance criteria for the Project X complex in support of these multiple missions, and to assure that the facility is designed with sufficient upgrade capability to provide U.S. leadership for many decades to come. Project-X is the proposed high intensity proton facility to be built at Fermilab, US. First stage of the Project-X consists of superconducting linac which will be operated in continuous wave (CW) mode to accelerate the beam from 2.5 MeV to 3 GeV. The operation at CW mode puts high tolerances on the beam line components, particularly on radiofrequency (RF) cavity. The failure of beam line elements at low energy is very critical as it results in mis-match of the beam with the following sections due to different beam parameters than designed parameter. It makes the beam unstable which causes emittance dilution, and ultimately results in beam losses. In worst case, it could affect the reliability of the machine and may lead to the shutdown of the Linac to replace the failed elements. Thus, it is important to study these effects and their compensation to get smooth beam propagation in linac. Project-X is the proposed high intensity proton facility to be built at Fermilab, US. Its Superconducting Linac, to be used at first stage of acceleration, will be operated in continuous wave (CW) mode. The Linac is divided into three sections on the basis of operating frequencies & six sections on the basis of family of RF cavities to be used for the acceleration of beam from 2.5 MeV to 3 GeV. The transition from one section to another can limit the acceptance of the Linac if these are not matched properly. We performed a study to calculate the acceptance of the Linac in both longitudinal and transverse plane. Front end of a CW linac of the Project X contains an H source, an RFQ, a medium energy transport line with the beam chopper, and a SC low-beta linac that accelerates H- from 2.5 MeV to 160 MeV. SC Single Spoke Resonators (SSR) will be used in the linac, because Fermilab already successfully developed and tested a SSR for beta=0.21. Two manufactured cavities achieve 2.5 times more than design accelerating gradients. One of these cavities completely dressed, e.g. welded to helium vessel with integrated slow and fast tuners, and tested in CW regime. Successful tests of beta=0.21 SSR give us a confidence to use this type of cavity for low beta (0.117) and for high-beta (0.4) as well. Both types of these cavities are under development. Applying the space-charge forces of a low-energy electron beam can lead to a significant improvement of the beam-particle lifetime limit arising from the beam-beam interaction in a high-energy collider [1]. In this article we present the results of various beam experiments with electron lenses, novel instruments developed for the beam-beam compensation at the Tevatron, which collides 980-GeV proton and antiproton beams. We study the dependencies of the particle betatron tunes on the electron beam current, energy and position; we explore the effects of electron-beam imperfections and noises; and we quantify the improvements of the high-energy beam intensity and the collider luminosity lifetime obtained by the action of the Tevatron Electron Lenses., Comment: submitted for publication in New Journal of Physics
