The acquisition of Solvay's pharmaceuticals business by Abbott Laboratories is likely to help the latter expand its business outside the US. The purchase, on the other hand, does not address Abbott's product pipeline issues.

Abbott Laboratories has acquired Solvay SA for $6.6 billion, with the deal providing Abbott Laboratories access to Solvay's plastics, chemicals and vaccines businesses and fenofibrate franchise among others. Other details on the companies' integration are discussed.

Solvay is set to sell its pharmaceutical business to Abbott Laboratories. The company will focus on its chemical and plastics businesses. Solvay will have around $10 billion in annual revenue after the deal's completion.

US healthcare company Abbott is going to acquire Belgian chemical and pharmaceutical company Solvay for 5.2 billion euro. The acquisition is expected to enlarge the Asian and Eastern European markets of Abbott, while boosting Abbott's annual income by more than 3 billion euro. The deal will also provide Abbott with worldwide rights to fenofibrate, a cholesterol drug.
