Urban waste management should ensure minimal environmental impact and local context adaptation. We present an assessment of the municipal Recycling Centre in Buenos Aires City (Centre), which processes recyclable materials, food waste, municipal tree pruning, and construction and demolition waste. To evaluate the Centre's socio-environmental performance, we conducted a study in an area of ~ 9 km
2 around the Centre. First, we surveyed nearby residents to gather their perceptions of the Centre and neighbourhood cleanliness. Second, we analysed indicators of air quality by dust traps, street cleanliness by applying an index evaluating street littering and provision of municipal waste containers, and vehicular and pedestrian traffic at the entrance of the Centre. About 80% of local residents had a negative perception of street cleanliness, largely due to litter scattered by neighbours around waste containers and pavements. Among residents aware of the Centre's existence, 60% reported negative perceptions, linked with dust emissions and heavy truck traffic. Positive perceptions were linked to the awareness about the Centre's role in waste recycling and employment. Air quality revealed the highest levels of dust particles near the Centre and on avenues, irrespective of their distance from the Centre. The cleanliness index was lowest in the Centre's immediate vicinity. Intense truck traffic was documented at the Centre's entrance, also reported as a negative issue in the surveys. These findings highlight negative environmental impacts on the well-being of residents in the Centre's surroundings, some of them associated with the Centre's operations. The study identifies opportunities for significant improvement to address these issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Abstract In mid-2018, several neighbourhoods in Maceió, Brazil, were affected by soil subsidence in the region. Since then, unprecedented developments and consequences have been observed in the affected areas. Against this backdrop, the study aims to analyses the socio-environmental impacts suffered by the five neighbourhoods affected by subsidence from rock salt extraction in the municipality of Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil. We collected secondary data from documents (Geological Survey studies, information made available by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office, Compensation Plan, Terms of Agreement, Socio-urban Action Plan, Environmental Impact Study, Study of the Economic Impact of the Disaster) to assess the socio-environmental impacts caused by the socio-environmental disaster. These data were analysed using Checklist, Interaction Matrix, and Delphi. The results highlight the complexity of the effects since they were observed from a multidisciplinary approach. In addition, it is clear that these impacts were relevant and important from the specialists' point of view and, when analysed quantitatively and qualitatively, such as impacts on identity and cultural aspects, change in standard of living, and overload in the provision of public facilities, which had a high degree of impact when evaluated in this study. The study also concluded that it is pertinent to take measures to mitigate the impacts indicated as possible through integration between public authorities and the mining company. Upon its completion, a technical product in the form of a document containing the identified mitigation measures was submitted to the competent authorities. These results can be relevant for practitioners and policymakers involved in decisions related to mining operations.

Hydropower serves as a very important element of the power system all over the world. And it has positive impacts on both economic development and on slowing down climate change related events such as floods and hydropower do not directly emit greenhouse gas which are ones of the main challenges facing humanity in the world. However, apart from its advantages, there are also various disadvantages of hydropower mainly related to its impacts on natural environment. This article overviews, presents and discusses various socio-environmental impacts of hydropower construction and operation in Burundi. Also, the study classifies direct and indirect impacts of hydropower as well as proposing their mitigation strategies. In this article a crucial aspect that is discussed is a new look at the installed capacity in terms of energy production and the presentation of insufficient generation capacity in Burundi which is one of the Sub-Saharan African countries still with a constant problem of lack of energy. The major negative impacts are changing in water quality, relocation of people, changes in the structure of the land and aquatic communities, loss in agriculture production, landslides and slopes destabilization and changing in climate. Another relevant aspect related with the design and construction of hydropower dams is that there are possibilities of creation of low flow reaches, downstream the reservoir, Therefore the river stretches should be remained with a minimum water flow to lessen the potentialities of the occurrence of hydrological drought and ecological damages.

Globally, ocean‐based economic development (aka the 'the blue economy') is increasing and continued growth is projected. The social and environmental impacts of the growth of the blue economy are a matter of some concern for local people who may experience few benefits and substantial negative impacts. One way that these impacts of the blue economy occur is through subtle or overt forms of dispossession that result from the growth of technologies and infrastructures at sea or on the land (e.g., offshore oil rigs, ships, ports, processing facilities, etc.). We focus on desalination, an understudied aspect of the blue economy that is growing exponentially. Proponents herald desalination as a sustainable solution to increase fresh water sources, while solving socio‐environmental issues left behind by the overuse of natural freshwater. However, far from being a social and environmental panacea, new political and economic interests are fused to sustain this technology with impacts for both the environment and local social systems. In this paper, we review the literature and develop a framework to understand mechanisms of dispossession via the blue economy and apply it to desalination projects in the Antofagasta Region of Chile. Drawing from a review of environmental impact assessments and declarations of environmental impacts, the research analyses communities' concerns about the impacts of desalination. Our analysis revealed (1) lack of meaningful inclusion in decision‐making; (2) physical displacement of communities or from areas required for livelihoods; (3) concerns about environmental effects, and related social impacts; and (4) few social or economic benefits to local people. The research concludes that desalination is a sector of the blue economy that is opening a new sphere of dispossession in the oceans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The rupture of a tailings dam causes several social, economic, and environmental impacts because people can die, the devastation caused by the debris and mud waves is expressive and the released substances may be toxic to the ecosystem and humans. There were two major dam failures in the Minas Gerais state, Brazil, in the last decade. The first was in 2015 in the city of Mariana and the second was in 2019 in the municipality of Brumadinho. The extent of land use and cover changes derived from those collapses were an expression of their impacts. Thus, knowing the changes to land use and cover after these disasters is essential to help repair or mitigate environmental degradation. This study aimed to diagnose the changes to land cover that occurred after the failure of dam B1 in Brumadinho that affected the Ferro-Carvão stream watershed. In addition to the environmental objective, there was the intention of investigating the impact of image preparation, as well as the spatial and spectral resolution on the classification's accuracy. To accomplish the goals, visible and near-infrared bands from Landsat (30 m), Sentinel-2 (10 m), and PlanetScope Dove (4.77 m) images collected between 2018 and 2021 were processed on the Google Earth Engine platform. The Pixel Reduction to Median tool was used to prepare the record of images, and then the random forest algorithm was used to detect the changes in land cover caused by the tailings dam failure under the different spatial and spectral resolutions and to provide the corresponding measures of accuracy. The results showed that the spatial resolution of the images affects the accuracy, but also that the selected algorithm and images were all capable of accurately classifying land use and cover in the Ferro-Carvão watershed and their changes over time. After the failure, mining/tailings areas increased in the impacted zone of the Ferro-Carvão stream, while native forest, pasture, and agricultural lands declined, exposing the environmental deterioration. The environment recovered in subsequent years (2020–2021) due to tailings removal and mobilization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Public participation in decision-making is one of the core principles of Impact Assessment. However, the mechanisms and processes that communities use to build organizational, consensual and knowledge capacities to get involved in decisions are yet to be better known. This paper aims to explore the implications of self-organized and self-mobilized participation in decision-making processes in the context of the Constitutional Ruling T-622/2016, which recognized the rights of the Atrato River (Colombia) to be healthy and ecologically supportive to the different populations, thus triggering a series of governmental actions supported by Impact Assessment. Through an exploratory approach guided by participant observation and supported by literature review, documentary research and interviews, it was revealed that social inequity and violence resulting both from governmental neglect and the lack of social and environmental rights are the main drivers of mobilization, followed by the violation of the community's traditional ties with the environment and, also, the coordination between grassroots communities and external actors. According to our findings, early meetings among stakeholders grounded on a balanced share of influence on decisions contributed to promote synergies in Impact Assessment and decision-making, thus leading to the previous identification of the likely causes of socio-environmental degradation and alternatives to mitigation.

This study develops a methodology to assess the energy transition's territorial, ecological and material impacts on regions. As a case study, the methodology is applied to the Cantabrian-Mediterranean Bioregion, a geographical area constituting eight autonomous communities located in the north of Spain. Two energy demand scenarios for 2030 and 2050 were assessed. The 2030 scenario is based on the Spanish government's planning, and the 2050 scenario constitutes a net-zero emission economy based on electrification. Energy dependence between autonomous communities, energy and raw material needs, and availability are obtained for both scenarios. Results show a high imbalance between energy producer–consumer autonomous communities and an ecological and critical material deficit for the Bioregion. Two alternative scenarios are proposed, one based on self-sufficiency to ensure a balanced energy transition and another based on energy and material efficiency seeking that the ecological and critical material footprints do not surpass the planet's carrying capacity. The indicators and methodology proposed can be easily replicated elsewhere and help develop more equitable and sustainable territorial planning strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study assessed the direct impacts of Cachoeira Caldeirão Hydropower Plant (before and during its construction) on the eating habits (fish and wild meat consumption) of the residents in Porto Grande City, Amapá State, Brazil. The study was conducted in 2015, based on a questionnaire for data collection (Sample size = 53) and on comparative analysis for significance (Wilcoxon test, p < 0.05) and correlation (Pearson’s test) assessment. Results suggested significant changes in families’ eating habits. The Wilcoxon test detected three significant variables (p < 0.05): family income, number of species (fish and wild meat consumption) and rate of wild meat consumption per family. Both the Wilcoxon and the Pearson’s correlation tests confirmed two variables (p < 0.05 and r > 0.7): family income versus wild meat consumption before (p value = 0.045; r = - 0.75) and family income versus fish consumption during (p value = 0.0029; r = - 0.83) hydropower plant construction. It can be inferred that the decrease in family fish consumption may be related to changes in the families' eating habits. Changes in diet may have led families to a growing consumption of industrialized and/or ultra-processed foods, very common in geographically isolated Amazon riverside regions with limited access to electricity. Furthermore, families were forced to adapt to a new reality due to environmental changes in their territories.

We take the concept of the economics of deforestation to analyse the consumption of firewood in Ecuador during 2018. We identify poor rural populations as being at risk, since the incomplete burning of firewood generates emissions of CO2 that can reach levels that are harmful to their health. We calculate that 95% of the impacts associated with the consumption of firewood are concentrated in rural areas, most of them in poverty conditions: the deforestation of 5,935 hectares, the emission of 1,317.38 Gg of CO2 and 94.58 Gg of CO due to the consumption of 782.08 Gg of firewood. We suggest an energy policy based on solidarity to reduce health risks for these communities, which in turn will enable other impacts to be mitigated. However, it will be necessary to include specific policies for commercial, industrial and productive uses of firewood, where about 65% of firewood consumption and its impacts are concentrated.

Abstract The expansion of large-scale oil palm cultivation in the Amazon has exposed indigenous populations to changes around their lands and in their daily activities. Given the lack of studies on the impacts of oil palm on these populations, this study analyzed the socio-environmental impacts perceived by the Tembé, in Tomé-Açu, Pará State. With an interdisciplinary approach, between 2016 and 2017, semi-structured interviews and participant observation were conducted in five villages, inside and adjacent to the Turé-Mariquita Indigenous Land and complemented by remote sensing analyzes. This article describes the pressure vectors and the main socio-environmental impacts through the analysis of the indigenous narrative, and then these are discussed based on the scientific literature and remote sensing data. The findings indicate that the conversion of the surrounding territory to oil palm monoculture generated social and environmental changes that negatively affected the Tembé’s way of life and their capacity of socio-cultural reproduction.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) and large-scale mining in the Ecuadorian Amazon region is potentially harmful to nature, and its impacts are associated with environmental degradation and deterioration of people’s health. So far, limited efforts have been directed at exploring the current situation and challenges facing the implementation of environmental policies in the country. The objective of this study focused on analyzing the historical and current situation and challenges of ASGM in the Amazon region of Ecuador in relation to a political perspective (laws), socioeconomic impacts (population displacement, loss of livelihoods, migration of people, cost of living, water scarcity, and health impacts), and environmental impacts (biotic and abiotic). The methodology used was based on a literature review and interviews, and information that was discussed through an expert judgment allowed for establishing challenges to improve ASGM management. The main results indicate that lack of community participation in decision-making, insufficient coordination between government institutions, communities, and miners, and lack of control of mining activities are factors that contribute to ineffective compliance with environmental policies in the gold mining sector in the Amazon. Finally, the study concludes by considering the socioeconomic and environmental scopes within its findings for implementing effective environmental and social policies in the Amazon region of Ecuador.

- Abstract
This research investigates the temporal dynamics of crop production surfaces, specifically focusing on basic crops and protected agriculture dedicated to commercial crops, within three municipalities located in the Sierra Nevada region of Puebla, Mexico. Employing a quantitative methodology, data were gathered from official agricultural sources to examine trends and their associated socio-environmental implications. The disruption of the Fundão dam, located in the municipality of Mariana (MG), was responsible for the biggest disaster caused by a mining company, being considered the largest environmental catastrophe ever occurred in Brazil. About 34 million m? of iron ore tailings were released into the environment, according to IBAMA's Preliminary Report (2015), by mining company Samarco - a company associated with Vale do Rio Doce and British company BHP Billiton. Rivers, streams and vegetation were hit, as well as the burial of homes and properties leaving many families homeless, without their means of subsistence, and weakened by the deaths of close ones. Within hours, after the dam broke, the mud reached the Doce River, causing increased turbidity of the water and causing the death of thousands of fish and other animals. In this work a bibliographic search of the main environmental impacts generated by the disaster was made, separated in three categories of damages: environmental, social and environmental and human, as well as the recovery plans of each one. The results showed that the impacts were highly complex, that many areas will be unable to return to their previous state and some plans will take long years to complete. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The author takes a historical tour of the process of domination and domestication of nature, which served the purposes of the sugar cane agro-industry installed in the Valle del Cauca and extended its domains to the geographical Valley of the Cauca River (Colombia). A critical reading is assumed by the author from a political ecology point of view and from that field proposes to call the agroecosystem of sugarcane an Artificial Denaturing Enclave (EAD). With this category, a reflexive and critical exercise is presented through which the discourse used daily to validate the planting of sugarcane and the logic behind the monoculture of said grass are confronted. It is an article of reflection, anchored in the disquisitions of Political Ecology, in the search to find consensus and provoke discussions not only around the new nominative category for the cultivation of sugarcane, but on sustainability, removed, of course, from any logic of planting, due to the effects and socio-environmental conflicts that have been provoked by this crop and its industrialized practices. Abstract From the construction of the Trans-Amazon Highway in the 1970's to the current construction of the third largest hydroelectric dam in the world at Belo Monte, the Brazilian Amazon has experienced the impact of large-scale infrastructure projects. When announced, all these projects purported to be the means to achieve progress, national integration, and economic development. The outcomes after several decades are less clear: national indebtedness, significant social and environmental impacts, and regional development taking second place to other goals such as energy production and national GDP. Solutions are suggested to reduce the negative impacts and achieve the goal of improved livelihoods and sustainable development without giving up on national development goals.

Abstract The assessment of the impacts and risks to health is possible through studies on health (and environmental conditions) before and after the installation of dams. This condition allows the construction of causal relations in timescale and the transformation of data and information on scientific knowledge and public policy. In this article, it is analyzed the issues regarding the attribution of causality in the emergency (or decrease) of the diseases or injuries, taking as examples the relationship between migration and workers' diseases (brought or acquired), cases of syphilis in pregnant women, deaths due to violence (such as homicide) and traffic accidents in the context of the construction of the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam. It is analyzed the challenges for the construction of a complex network of causal relations, that incorporate the bio-physiological causes with other causes derived from human actions and political decisions (or omissions), in this specific context.

Impacts of climate change adaptation strategies need to be evaluated using principled methods spanning sectors and longer time frames. We propose machine-learning approaches to study the long-term impacts of flood protection in Bangladesh. Available data include socio-economic survey and events data (death, migration, etc.) from 1983−2014. These multidecadal data, rare in their extent and quality, provide a basis for using machine-learning approaches even though the data were not collected or designed to assess the impact of the flood control investments. We test whether the embankment has affected the welfare of people over time, benefiting those living inside more than those living outside. Machine-learning approaches enable learning patterns in data to help discriminate between two groups: here households living inside vs. outside. They also help identify the most informative indicators of discrimination and provide robust metrics to evaluate the quality of the model. Overall, we find no significant difference between inside/outside populations based on welfare, migration, or mortality indicators. However, we note a significant difference in inward/outward movement with respect to the embankment. While certain data gaps and spatial heterogeneity in sampled populations suggest caution in any conclusive interpretation of the flood protection infrastructure, we do not see higher benefits accruing to those living with higher levels of protection. This has implications for Bangladesh’s planning for future and more extreme climate futures, including the national Delta Plan, and global investments in climate resilient infrastructure to create positive social impacts.

- Abstract
The emergence of urban areas along axes of flow in Brazil is a reality that follows the country since its colonization, resulting in the creation of huge metropolitan centers of high economic influence (POLIDORO, et al. 2012). In this context, this article tends to analyse from a geographic view the multitemporal evolution of the urban spot along the BR-101 highway stretch known as Vitória Highway Contour, crossing the municipalities of Cariacica and Serra, by using concomitantly Geographical Information Systems and Remote Sensing products, making possible the confirmation of the urban sprawl by the treatment of orbital images and the integration with others sources of data, such as populational ones. The conceptual and theoretical support counted on authors such as Benevolo, Corrêa, Campos Jr, besides others who discuss modern urbanistic, spatial organization and city building. It was observed in the thematic maps that the urban area suffered a huge growth between the studied years, being able to help elaborating municipal guidelines for the urban planning and for the land use and occupation in the area. In addition to the environmental objective, there was the intention of investigating the impact of image preparation, as well as the spatial and spectral resolution on the classification’s accuracy.

- Abstract
The Colombian Amazon has the larger ecological conservation area in the country. It is a region where there is an interaction between biotic factors —human and non-human species— and abiotic factors —water, fuel oil, minerals. Considering that the oil industry has a special interest on the Amazon territory, with about 58,5 million of hectares, this paper deals with the question concerning the main environmental impacts of the oil industry on the region, and the social tension which that causes with the human communities that inhabit the Amazon. Thus, a substitution criterion is proposed in order to safeguard the life and the culture in this part of the Colombian territory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is limited knowledge on the potential impacts of electric vehicle (EV) deployment in developing countries to date. India is a rapidly industrializing country with a national policy to promote EVs, but does not have the waste management infrastructure to process battery waste. Through a model analysis for India, we projected that the sale of two-wheeler EVs will peak in 2030 at around 20 million units while the sale of four-wheeler EVs will steadily increase to 10 million units in 2050. Meanwhile, the volume of lead-acid battery waste is projected to peak in 2027, and lithium-ion battery waste from two-wheelers and four-wheelers will exceed 500 kilotons in 2044 and 1000 kilotons in 2050, respectively. Given these projections, it is imperative to create a safe environment for workers and surrounding communities, an extended producer responsibility (EPR) system and a national mechanism to track waste crimes related to batteries in the future.

Mining in Ecuadorian territory comprises three stages of Ecuadorian history: pre-Columbian, colonial, and republican times. In its beginnings, this activity did not have regulations or a legal foundation. The first Mining Law dates back to 1830, and it has been modified until the most recent update in 2009. The Andean region consists of 10 provinces, 9 of which have registered gold concessions, the most important of which are Loja, Azuay, and in recent years, Imbabura and Pichincha, which are the provinces with the highest number of reported concessions. The objective of this study focused on analyzing the historical and current situation of Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASGM) and the emergence of large-scale (industrial) mining. For the elaboration of this study, different methodological techniques were used, such as literature review, field interviews, and expert judgment validation. The main findings show that the provinces of Loja, Azuay, Imbabura, and Pichincha are the most conflictive areas in the region due to the impacts caused by mining activities. In socio-economic terms, there are conflicts between inhabitants in favor and against these activities and problems associated with human health. In environmental terms, the findings suggest historical contamination of water sources by heavy metals, which has altered the surrounding aquatic and terrestrial systems. Finally, the study concludes that implementing public policies should be promoted to balance socio-economic and environmental aspects in gold mining activities in the Andean region of Ecuador, strengthening the use of new technologies and education to raise awareness of the serious effects of mining activities.

Abstract How do extractive-based corporations deal with people they impact? Based on this question, this article presents a literature review describing a chameleonic repertoire of discursive practices intertwined in processes of exploration by these companies, of lands inhabited by peasants, indigenous peoples, and other traditional communities around the world. The bibliographic research was part of the project “Political implications of extractive capitalism: social movements and right conditions for justice in the Brazilian Amazon’. Nevertheless, it focuses on what happens outside Brazil, enabling a comparative framework in which many similarities between different national contexts can be noted. In the repertoire unveiled by these studies, a central aspect of how corporations exercise power is identified. It is shown how the continuous creation of ambiguities sustains Kafkaesque legal processes, the consequent non-resolution of conflicts, the precariousness of life with the promises of local development, the deregulation of state action in the name of ‘governance’ and so on. Focusing on creative practices and the concrete effects of this vocabulary that underlies “corporate social responsibility’, we will see that such practices do not mitigate (on the contrary, enable) the perpetuation and intensification of violence against the lives that resist the expropriation processes.

The production of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has increased in capacity by almost eight fold in the past ten years due to growing demand for consumer electronics and electric-drive vehicles. The social and environmental implications of increased lithium demand is significant not only in the context of policy initiatives that are incentivizing electric vehicle adoption, but also because electric vehicle adoption is part of the vision of sustainability transitions that are being put forth in a variety of contexts. Any evidence that suggests that the externalities of the technology uptake are not being addressed would directly counter the intent of such initiatives. For LIBs to be fully sustainable, it is imperative that impacts along life cycle stages be adequately addressed, including lithium mineral extraction. This study investigates how the scope and focus of research in this area are changing and what drives their evolution. Based on a bibliometric analysis, we evaluate the state of research on the issues of lithium mineral extraction, use, and their impacts. The article identifies research hotspots and emerging research agendas by mapping the evolution of research focus and themes. Our analysis finds that research on the socio-environmental impacts of lithium extraction at local level has been very limited. We discuss some research directions to address the knowledge gaps in terms of specific research topics, methodologies, and broader system perspectives.

This article aims to give an overview of the socio-environmental impacts of the extractive process in South America. Half of all lithium reserves on the planet are located between Chile, Argentina and Bolivia, the so-called “lithium triangle”. Lands where the transformation process is often opposed by local organizations that attempt a dialectic of negotiation/resistance of a territory harming communities and damaging fragile ecosystems. The exploitation of local water resources caused by the mining process has a strong impact on ancestral territories. Water resources are contaminated, diverted and consumed by the lithium mining process causing conflicts and exacerbating the long process of expropriation of local communities. The displacement of populations, forced by the intensive development of mining activities, leaves the population in a very high position of vulnerability. In these territories, the objective must be (1) to adapt local infrastructures to the new technological needs of the sector (eg. green technologies), (2) to focus on projects that benefit the local community both socially and environmentally., Este artículo se propone dar una visión general de los impactos socioambientales del proceso extractivo en Sudamérica.

The present article has as its general objective to define and outline analysis under the implementation of hydroelectric dams in Brazil. The study on the impacts caused by such constructions is carried out through the economic, social and environmental prism. For the study, it starts from the legal-sociological aspect and uses the theoretical research methodology, based on a bibliographic review based on documents that highlight the exposed theme. As a result of the research, it is inferred that there is an asymmetry of power in the construction of such enterprises, which leads to a social appropriation of socio-environmental conflicts, insofar as the use of environmental spaces occurs to the detriment of the use that other social segments make of territory. Thus, it appears that hydroelectric dams generate environmental injustice, since they are built and implemented with the primary objective of benefiting certain economic sectors, in favor of the rights and fundamentals of the community directly and indirectly affected.

The Land Use and Occupation Ordinance Law in the Santos Island Area approved in 1998, whose urban indexes area still in force, instituted a model for the production of urban space in the island area of municipality that resulted in negative urban and environmental impacts. Based on a technical-conceptual basis of the field of environmental urban law and empirical research, this paper seeks to investigate how changes in the law over the past few years have induced the performance of the real estate market, deepening and consolidating a production model undertakings whose standard is geared almost exclusively to the high and medium-high income classes, characterizing the urban and environmental impacts generated in the insular area of the municipality, relating them to the legal framework of Environmental Law and Urban Law and seeking to reflect on forms of accountability for the negative impacts generated.

The globalization of the world economy has increased resource flows around the planet, raising pressures on the environment. Historically, northern industrialized economies have been responsible for the majority of resource consumption, while developing countries have suffered the associated social and environmental impacts. This article analyzes the extra-territorial responsibility of the Basque economy (Europe), to illustrate the responsibility of northern open economies towards the global environment. To do this, we: (i) analyze the material and energy flows of the Basque economy, their source and impacts on other regions of the world, (ii) study the impact of the economic and investment activities of Basque companies abroad, and (iii) examine, together with other paradigmatic examples, three case studies from Latin-America, East Africa and Southeast Asia that represent the liabilities of northern economies in the Global South. This approach allows us to connect production and consumption processes in affluent countries with associated socio-ecological impacts in the extraction frontiers in order to better understand and potentially transform current economic patterns and their consequences. In addition, the study indicates how to bridge the gap between local and global scales, creating a useful approach to raising social awareness and informing public policies in resource intensive societies.
