This secondary teachers guide builds upon a previous sequential course described in SO 003 173, and consists of three sections on the classical civilizations--Greek, Hellenistic, and Rome. Major emphasis is upon students gaining an understanding of cultural development and transmission. Using an analytic method, students learn to examine primary source materials, collect data, organize social data, make and verify inferences, and formulate and test hypotheses about the development and decline of civilizations. Finally, students will draw conclusions which will serve as a base for new inquiries into other civilizations. The first section deals with the physical environment of Greece, the Heroic Age, the Phoenicians, the Age of Hesiod, the rise of the city states, the Persian wars, and the Golden age of Athens. Section two focuses upon the Hellenistic age and distinguishing physical characteristics of the Mediterranean world. The Roman empire and its' decline is studied in the last section. Instructional materials from original sources are included, suggested audio-visual aids are listed, and a sample student manual is incorporated into each section of the guide.
