Aerial mapping and remote sensing takes another step forward with this method of modelling lidar data. The usual form of presentation, hill shade, uses a point source to show up surface features. In Late Cretaceous times, subduction of oceanic crust occurred to the north of the Adria plate and was followed by the formation of ophiolitic complexes. Continental collision in Alpine orogenic belts lasted from Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary times. The progressive contraction of oceanic crust caused the uplift of previously rifled continental margin and platforms and the formation of foredeep flysch basins. Detrital Cr-spinels are widespread in Eocene sandstones of the Brkini, Istrian and Krk Island foredeep flysch basins. On the basis of their Ti[O.sub.2] content and FeO/[Fe.sub.2][O.sub.3] ratio, spinels derived from peridotites and mantle-derived magmatic rocks were distinguished. The first are statistically more abundant and are considered to have been derived from type I and II peridotites. The second appear to be mainly related to backarc basin products. These results suggest that Cr-spinels were derived from the erosion of the Internal Dinarides, where type II and III peridotites are present, and also from the Outer Dinarides, where type I peridotites crop out. The Mezica mine in northern Slovenia has exploited one of Europe's greatest lead-zinc deposits for well over three centuries. Along with Austria's famous Bleiberg mine just 19 km to the north, it is also one of Europe's few important wulfenite-producing areas. Fine speciments of Mezica wulfenite may be found in prominent museums and private collections worldwide.

1 Slovenia is a small but floristically diverse country with at least six distinctive phytogeographical regions. 2 The palaeoecological record was used to examine the vegetational history of this diverse landscape, using cores from four of the phytogeographical regions. 3 All contain records that extend back to at least 9000 cal. bp and indicate that the early Holocene vegetation of Slovenia was rather uniform and that broadleaved woodland containing Corylus, Quercus, Ulmus and Tilia prevailed throughout. 4 From 8800 cal. bp, however, distinctive regional differences became increasingly marked, with the onset of intensive forest clearance and burning from c. 3000 cal. bp. 5 The development of the present-day landscape in Slovenia varied considerably between phytogeographical regions and in some regions was a consequence not only of climatic variation but also of the intensity of prehistoric human activity.

A structural analysis of the eastern segment of the Periadriatic Fault and its southern and northern vicinity in north and northeast Slovenia has made it possible to gain a more detailed insight into the Miocene-Pliocene evolution of the Slovenian segment of the Periadriatic Line. Discordant Karpatian and Badenian sediments over deformed Paleogene rocks indicate that dextral slip occurred in the early Miocene. This deformation led to the initial disruption of the Paleogene basin into North Hungarian and Slovenian subbasins.
