1. Conditional upper and lower bounds for $L$-functions in the Selberg class close to the critical line

Abstract

Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we provide uniform upper and lower bounds with explicit main terms for $\log{\left|\mathcal{L}(s)\right|}$ for $\sigma \in (1/2,1)$ and for functions in the Selberg class. We also provide estimates under additional assumptions on the distribution of Dirichlet coefficients of $\mathcal{L}(s)$ on prime numbers. Moreover, by assuming a polynomial Euler product representation for $\mathcal{L}(s)$, we establish both uniform bounds, and completely explicit estimates by assuming also the strong $\lambda$-conjecture.

Abstract

We also provide estimates under additional assumptions on the distribution of Dirichlet coefficients of $\cL(s)$ on prime numbers. Moreover, by assuming a polynomial Euler product representation for $\cL(s)$, we establish uniform bounds for $|3/4-\sigma|\leq 1/4-1/\log{\log{\left(\sq|t|^{\sdeg}\right)}}$, $|1-\sigma|\leq 1/\log{\log{\left(\sq|t|^{\sdeg}\right)}}$ and $\sigma=1$, and completely explicit estimates by assuming also the strong $\lambda$-conjecture.

Abstract

Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we establish explicit bounds in the $q$-aspect for the logarithmic derivative $\left(L'/L\right)\left(\sigma,\chi\right)$ of Dirichlet $L$-functions, where $\chi$ is a primitive character modulo $q\geq 10^{30}$ and $1/2+1/\log{\log{q}}\leq\sigma\leq 1-1/\log\log q$. In addition, for $\sigma=1$ we improve upon the result by Ihara, Murty and Shimura (2009). Similar results for the logarithmic derivative of the Riemann zeta-function are given., Comment: 11 pages

Abstract

Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we provide explicit upper bounds for moduli of $\log{\mathcal{L}(s)}$ and $\mathcal{L}'(s)/\mathcal{L}(s)$ in the neighbourhood of the 1-line when $\mathcal{L}(s)$ are the Riemann, Dirichlet and Dedekind zeta-functions. To do this, we generalize Littlewood's well known conditional result to functions in the Selberg class with a polynomial Euler product, for which we also establish a suitable convexity estimate. As an application we provide conditional and effective estimate for the Mertens function., Comment: 20 pages

Abstract

We make explicit an argument of Heath-Brown concerning large and small gaps between nontrivial zeroes of the Riemann zeta-function, $\zeta(s)$. In particular, we provide the first unconditional results on gaps (large and small) which hold for a positive proportion of zeroes. To do this we prove explicit bounds on the second and fourth power moments of $S(t+h)-S(t)$, where $S(t)$ denotes the argument of $\zeta(s)$ on the critical line and $h \ll 1 / \log T$. We also use these moments to prove explicit results on the density of the nontrivial zeroes of $\zeta(s)$ of a given multiplicity.

14. A note on a straight gravity tunnel through a rotating body

Abstract

It is well-known that the straight gravity tunnel between any two different positions on a non-rotating Earth, which has uniform density, is traversable, i.e., an object initially at rest will reach its destination through the gravity tunnel in both directions. Moreover, the time taken to fall is always constant. These facts are no longer true if rotation is allowed. The aim of this note is to derive the necessary and sufficient condition for traversability of straight gravity tunnels through a rotating physical body with spherically symmetric gravitational field. Fall-through times are expressed in a closed form for linear and constant gravitational fields. In conclusion, these models are compared to numerically obtained data using the internal structure of the Earth.

In 1946, A. Selberg proved $N(\sigma,T) \ll T^{1-\frac{1}{4} \left(\sigma-\frac{1}{2}\right)} \log{T}$ where $N(\sigma,T)$ is the number of nontrivial zeros $\rho$ of the Riemann zeta-function with $\Re\{\rho\}>\sigma$ and $0<\Im\{\rho\}\leq T$. Abstract

We present some methods for constructing connected spatial geometric configurations $(p_{q}, n_{k})$ of points and lines, preserved by the same rotations (and reflections) of Euclidean space $E^{3}$ as the chosen Platonic solid. Abstract

In this note we examine Littlewood's proof of the prime number theorem. We show that this can be extended to provide an equivalence between the prime number theorem and the non-vanishing of Riemann's zeta-function on the one-line. Our approach goes through the theory of almost periodic functions and is self-contained.

Abstract

Scholarly communication is today immersed in publish or perish culture that propels noncooperative behaviour in the sense of strategic games played by researchers. Here we introduce and describe a blockchain based platform for decentralized scholarly communication. The design of the platform rests on community driven publishing reviewing processes and implements incentives that promote cooperative user behaviour. Key to achieve cooperation in blockchain based scholarly communication is to transform a static research paper into a modifiable research paper under continuous peer review process. We describe and discuss the implementation of a modifiable research paper as a smart contract on the blockchain.

Die Digitalisierung verändert alle Lebensbereiche und damit auch die Anforderungen an zukünftige Ärztinnen und Ärzte. In einem gemeinsamen Ansatz haben interuniversitäre und interdisziplinäre Arbeitsgruppen der österreichischen öffentlichen medizinischen Universitäten und Fakultäten Ausbildungselemente zur Digitalisierung in der Medizin entwickelt. In einem ersten Schritt wurden diese Elemente als Wahlfächer implementiert, die nach einer Evaluierungsphase in die Curricula integriert werden. Zukünftige Ärzt:innen erhalten damit eine Basiskompetenz für den für Patient:innen nutzbringenden Einsatz digitaler Werkzeuge.

Occurrences of very close zeros of the Riemann zeta function are strongly connected with Lehmer pairs and with the Riemann Hypothesis. The aim of the present note is to derive a condition for a pair of consecutive simple zeros of the $\zeta$-function to be a Lehmer pair in terms of derivatives of Hardy's $Z$-function. 35. Elementary approach to the Hartogs extension theorem

Abstract

In this paper we present a proof of Hartogs' extension theorem, following T. Sobieszek's paper from 2003. Hartogs' theorem provides a large class of domains where holomorphic functions have analytic continuation to larger domains, and is "a several complex variables theorem" in nature because its conclusion is false in the complex plane. Sobieszek's proof is quite remarkable because he uses, stated in his paper without proofs, only higher-dimensional identity principle for holomorphic functions and Cauchy's integral formula for compact sets. We proved this two theorems here, making this exposition self-contained. The only background required is an undergraduate course in real and complex analysis and in point-set topology.

Abstract

A cognitive architecture is presented, which combines insights from artificial intelligence with cognitive psychology,biology, and linguistics. Using a Super Mario clone, we equipped the simulated agents with (i) motivational behavioral systems,(ii) reasoning and planning capabilities, (iii) event-based schema learning and sensorimotor exploration, and (iv) speech com-prehension and generation mechanisms. The motivational system activates goal events to maintain internal homeostasis. Toinvoke selected events, hierarchical action planning and control unfolds both on an event-schematic and a sensorimotor level.Schema learning is based on the detection of event changes, which are not predicted by the basic sensorimotor forward model.Language is comprehended and generated using context-free grammars linked to the schema-based knowledge structure. Thework offers an approach to develop and thus to ground conceptual, semantic world knowledge in sensorimotor interactions andto couple this knowledge with a language to generate and comprehend language about the agent’s virtual world meaningfully.

Abstract

The aim of the work was to develop a zero-waste technological solution for hybrid removal of heavy metals from river sediments. The proposed technological process consists of sample preparation, sediment washing (a physicochemical process for sediment purification), and purification of the wastewater produced as a by-product. A suitable solvent for heavy metal washing and the effectiveness of heavy metal removal were determined by testing EDTA and citric acid. The process for removing heavy metals from the samples worked best with citric acid when the 2% sample suspension was washed over a 5-h period. The method was chosen of the adsorption of heavy metals from the exhausting washing solution on natural clay. Analyses were performed of the three main heavy metals, Cu(II), Cr(VI), and Ni(II), in the washing solution. Based on the laboratory experiments, a technological plan was prepared for the purification of 100,000 tons of material per year.

Abstract

Background: Tooth extraction, changing dentition and malocclusion can decrease area of occlusal contact and negatively affect masticatory efficiency. Aim of this study was to evaluate difference in masticatory efficiency in association with previously named factors. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study masticatory efficiency parameters (number of particles, mean diameter and mean surface of particles) determined with optical scanning method were compared between children with healthy dentition (12 girls, 12 boys, age 3 to 14) and children with lost antagonistic contacts due to tooth extraction, changing dentition and malocclusions (12 girls, 12 boys, age 3 to 14). Results: Number of chewed particles is significantly higher in a group of children with healthy dentition (p < 0.001), and chewed particles’ mean diameter and surface are significantly higher in the Group 2 (p < 0.001; p < 0.001). Number of lost occlusal contacts is not in correlation with masticatory efficiency parameters (p= 0.464; p= 0.483; p= 0.489). Conclusions: Children with lost antagonistic contacts have an impaired masticatory efficiency in comparison to children with complete dentition, but there is no difference regarding the aetiology of contact loss.

Abstract

Summary: Cell cycle progression and cell fate decisions are closely linked in human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). However, the study of these interplays at the molecular level remains challenging due to the lack of efficient methods allowing cell cycle synchronization of large quantities of cells. Here, we screened inhibitors of cell cycle progression and identified nocodazole as the most efficient small molecule to synchronize hPSCs in the G2/M phase. Following nocodazole treatment, hPSCs remain pluripotent, retain a normal karyotype and can successfully differentiate into the three germ layers and functional cell types. Moreover, genome-wide transcriptomic analyses on single cells synchronized for their cell cycle and differentiated toward the endoderm lineage validated our findings and showed that nocodazole treatment has no effect on gene expression during the differentiation process. Thus, our synchronization method provides a robust approach to study cell cycle mechanisms in hPSCs. : In this study, Vallier and colleagues show that small molecule cell cycle inhibitors can be used to successfully synchronize and enrich hPSCs in different cell cycle phases. Particularly, the G2/M inhibitor nocodazole successfully enriched cells in G2/M, G1, and S phases of the cell cycle, without affecting pluripotency and differentiation capacity as shown by molecular and genome-wide single-cell RNA-seq analyses.
