Brazil has hosted mass event (ME) and participants are exposed to health risks. The scope of this paper is to systematize the main relationships between ME and the occurrence of disasters of interest to Public Health. Three methodological strategies were used: systematic search and review of the literature on ME; systematization of the main information on ME; and selection and systematization of the references located for the theme of disaster in the search for key words, title or abstract. 28 references for ME were selected, mostly scientific papers, literature reviews, publications in 2012 and sports events. The main subjects addressed were surveillance systems and planning of ME. There was little analytical information about ME, as well as the importance of non-communicable events for the occurrence of disasters with emphasis on those related to crowds. It is important to consider the risk of disasters when planning ME to increase response time. Strategic areas such as medical emergencies, surveillance of communicable diseases and vectors, food and health service security, environmental health and laboratories should be considered. The importance of analytical research and registration of experience acquired in ME should be stressed for disaster risk reduction.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium species and genotypes in birds kept in captivity in Brazil. A total of 966 samples from 18 families of birds was collected and stored in 5% potassium dichromate solution at 4 degrees C until processing. Oocysts were purified in Sheather sugar solution following extraction of genomic DNA. Molecular analyses were performed using nested-PCR for amplification of fragments of the 18S subunit of rRNA gene and of the actin gene. Amplification of Cryptosporidium DNA fragments was obtained in 47 (4.86%) samples. Sequencing of amplified fragments and phylogenetic analyses allowed the identification of Cryptosporidium baileyi in a black vulture (Coragyps atratus), a domestic chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) and a saffron finch (Sicalis flaveola); Cryptosporidium galli in canaries (Serinus canaria), a cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) and lesser seed-finches (Oryzoborus angolensis); Cryptosporidium meleagridis in a domestic chicken (G. g. domesticus); Cryptosporidium parvum in a cockatiel (N. hollandicus); Cryptosporidium avian genotype I in a canary (S. canaria) and an Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus); Cryptosporidium avian genotype II in ostriches (Struthio camelus) and Cryptosporidium avian genotype III in a cockatiel (N. hollandicus) and a peach-faced lovebird (Agapornis roseicolis).

Proventricular infection by Cryptosporidium sp. or Cryptosporidium galli has been associated with mortality, weight loss, diarrhea, and pasty feces. The purpose of this study is to report the occurrence of natural C galli infection in canaries (Serinus canaria), in a cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), and in lesser seed-finches (Oryzoborus angolensis) with clinical complaints of apathy and sporadic mortality. Screening for Cryptosporidium spp. using microscopic examination of fecal samples and stained smears, histopathology, and nested polymerase chain reaction for actin gene and 18S ribosomal RNA gene following sequencing of amplified fragments allowed for the identification of C galli. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of C galli in birds in Brazil and the first report of this species in lesser seed-finches.

Background and Objectives: Continuous infusion (CI) of remifentanil is common in total intravenous anesthesia. On the other hand, CI of sufentanil for short/medium-term surgeries has not been widely used. The objective of this study was to compare two techniques of total intravenous anesthesia, using CI of remifentanil or sufentanil, regarding their intraoperative behavior and characteristics of recovery of patients undergoing videolaparoscopic surgeries., Methods: Sixty patients, equally divided in 2 groups (RG, and SG), participated in this study. Continuous infusion of remifentanil was used for anesthetic induction in RG, while a bolus of sufentanil associated with CI of this drug was used in SG. The CI of remifentanil was discontinued at the end of the surgery, while the CI of sufentanil was discontinued 20 minutes before the end of the surgery. Patients received ketoprofen and dypirone intraoperatively. Tramadol was used for rescue analgesia in the recovery room. Variations of mean arterial pressure (MAP) and hard reate (HR), time for awakening, propofol consumption, intercurrences in the recovery room, and time of stay in the recovery room were analyzed., Results: Mean MAP was greater in SG than in RG (91.9 x 77.6, p < 0.0001). The incidence of pain was significantly greater in RG than on SG (22 x 1 patient, p < 0.0001). The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) was greater in RG than in SG (10 x 2 patients, p < 0.0098). The mean time of stay in the recovery room was greater in RG than in SG (76 x 49 min, p < 0.0001)., Conclusions: Hemodynamic control was satisfactory in both groups. Continuous infusion of sufentanil promoted better postoperative pain control with decreased consumption of rescue analgesic and, consequently, reduced incidence of PONV and reduced time of stay in the recovery room.

It is clear that there is a genetic component associated with the ageing process. Although evolutionary theory has suggested that the activity of certain genes may facilitate ageing by favouring resource utilisation by the germ cells at the expense of somatic cells, there is reason to believe that the senescent phenotype, which is the endpoint of the ageing process, may be due to alterations in the levels of expression of other genes. To investigate this situation we have used the differential display technique to survey gene expression during ageing of the rat brain, heart and liver. By optimising this technique it is possible to identify up to 10000-14000 PCR products, which represent genes expressed in the tissue under study. Interestingly, only a relatively small cohort (approximately 2%) of these genes appear to show significant changes in their levels of expression during ageing. Characterisation of the latter has so far revealed certain genes, such as glial fibrillary acidic protein, which are associated with the senescent phenotype. It has also revealed that the level of fos, a component of the AP-1 transcription factor, decreases with age, which has implications for AP-1 regulated genes. The differential display technique has also revealed an increase in mitochondrial RNA during ageing of the heart, which may be due to a gene dosage effect caused by the presence of increased numbers of mitochondrial genomes in myocytes in old age. The differential display technique therefore appears to offer a powerful tool for identifying genes which contribute to the emergence of a senescent phenotype.
