1. Sistemas de abastecimento e tratamento de água em municípios amazônicos: o caso em São Sebastião da Boa Vista, Ilha do Marajó (Pará)

Neste estudo de caso são abordadas as condições dos sistemas de abastecimento e tratamento de água em São Sebastião da Boa Vista (SSBV), município da área de proteção ambiental do Arquipélago do Marajó (PA). No arquipélago, a economia é baseada na agropecuária, extrativismo de açaí, palmito, madeira e pesca de subsistência, sendo a parte urbanizada fomentada pelo comércio local. Apesar de pertencer à região com o maior potencial hídrico do mundo, a distribuição de água potável para a população é paradoxalmente deficitária. Com base nas informações coletadas na prefeitura, visitas às instalações e residências do setor urbanizado e banco de dados (DATASUS), verificou-se que as águas fluviais e subterrâneas são captadas para abastecimento público, porém, não são tratadas e suprem parcialmente a área urbanizada. A maior parte da população adota alternativas como captação de água de nascentes, córregos ou poços domésticos e aquisição de água mineral. O tratamento da água é caseiro e não há monitoramento ou divulgação da qualidade da água. A situação reflete o descaso na gestão e a defasagem com relação às outras partes do Brasil para o alcance dos objetivos do desenvolvimento sustentável para água potável e saneamento básico. Soluções de baixo custo para as regiões rurais são essenciais para a mudança desse cenário de abandono, mas não configuram o atendimento considerado adequado segundo o Plano Nacional de Saneamento Básico. Em SSBV, a precariedade do sistema de abastecimento urge a capacitação de pessoas para monitoramento da potabilidade e participação da população na cobrança de políticas públicas.
