Ovine toxoplasmosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic disease responsible for triggering reproductive problems in sheep with great public health impact. The zoonotic risk for humans occurs through the ingestion of meat contaminated with bradyzoites, water and vegetables contaminated with oocysts, or by ingesting unprocessed sheep milk contaminated with tachyzoites. The study aimed to determine the seroprevalence, isolate, and genetically characterize T. gondii from sheep in northeastern Brazil. Blood and tissue samples, including the liver, heart, brain, lung, and diaphragm, were collected from 256 sheep in slaughterhouses. The presence of anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies was assessed by the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT), and sera with titers ≥ 1: 64 were considered positive. Tissue samples from seropositive sheep were digested in acidic pepsin solution and inoculated into two Swiss mice for T. gondii isolation and further characterized by molecular methods. The prevalence of anti-T. gondii antibodies in sheep was 31.64% and the isolation rate was 40.7%. Sixteen out of 33 isolates were submitted to mnRFLP-PCR using ten genetic markers. Four isolates were fully genotyped, and four isolates were amplified at least in one marker. All isolates were characterized as atypical genotypes, and ToxoDB #57 (n = 3) and #143 (n = 1) were identified. The detection of viable T. gondii in sheep from slaughterhouses in Brazil highlights the risk of human exposure. Background: Nursing students face unique challenges during their university education, making them vulnerable to mental health problems. Psychological resilience has been identified as a protective factor against these issues. However, previous reviews have identified gaps in the literature on resilience and mental health among nursing students., Objectives: This scoping review aims to identify and map studies on psychological resilience and mental health in undergraduate nursing students, synthesize current evidence on their relationship, identify interventions for enhancing resilience, and highlight gaps in the existing literature., Eligibility Criteria: Studies published between January 2019 and April 2024 in English, Portuguese, and Spanish addressing resilience and mental health in undergraduate nursing students will be included. Primary studies, secondary studies, clinical guidelines, and grey literature will be considered., Sources of Evidence: Searches will be conducted in multiple databases including EMBASE, ERIC, PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, DOAJ, ELSEVIER, EMERALD, and WILEY ONLINE LIBRARY. Grey literature sources will also be searched., Charting Methods: Data will be extracted using a standardized form and synthesized narratively. Thematic analysis will be conducted using MAXQDA software ((Verbi GmbH, 24 version, 2023). Quantitative summaries, visual mapping, subgroup analyses, and trend analyses will be performed where appropriate., Results: As this is a protocol, results are not yet available. The review will present a comprehensive map of the current literature on psychological resilience and mental health in nursing students, including identified interventions and research gaps., Conclusions: This scoping review will provide valuable insights to guide curriculum development, support services, and policy-making in nursing education. Objective: Several approaches can be used in the surgical treatment of vestibular schwannoma (VS), and the best approach remains uncertain in the literature. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to compare the translabyrinthine approach (TLA) with the retrosigmoid approach (RSA) for VS in terms of postoperative complications., Data Sources: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane., Review Methods: The primary outcome was cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak; secondary outcomes were facial nerve dysfunction (FND), length of stay (LOS), and meningitis. Statistical analysis was performed using RStudio 2024.04.1 + 748. Heterogeneity was assessed with I² statistics. We performed sensitivity analysis with subgroup analysis and meta-regression. Risk of bias was assessed using ROBINS-I., Results: Out of 1140 potential articles, 21 met the inclusion criteria. Among the 4572 patients, 2687 and 1885 patients in the TLA and RSA groups, respectively. No significant differences were found in CSF leak (odds ratio [OR] 1.03; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.81,1.32; P = .794) or meningitis (OR 1.05; 95% CI 0.45, 2.43; P = .73). Meta-regression showed no association with CSF leak and the number of cases per center or publication year. The TLA is associated with a shorter LOS (MD -1.20; 95% CI -1.39, -1.01; P < .01) and a higher chance of having and HB 4 or lower compared to patients who underwent RSA (OR 0.30; 95% CI 0.10, 0.89; P = .03)., Conclusion: There was no difference in the odds of CSF leak or meningitis between the groups. Background:  Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain that is associated with sleep, emotional, and cognitive disturbances, including in executive functions (EFs)., Objective:  To investigate the relationship between EFs and functionality in women with FM., Methods:  The study included 17 women with FM, aged between 30 and 59 years, with no history of neurological disease. The EFs were assessed using the Digit Span Subtest (DS), Five Digit Test, Trail Making Test (TMT), Corsi Block-Tapping Task, Hayling Test (HT), and Verbal Fluency Task. Functionality was evaluated through the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire. The Beck Depression Inventory, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, and Brief Pain Inventory were used to measure depression, anxiety, and pain, which were controlled in the statistical analyses., Results:  The FM patients showed longer response latency on the HT and TMT. They made fewer errors on part B of the HT, and they performed worse on the DS backward and on the Corsi Block-Tapping Task forward and backward. There were moderate correlations in the expected direction between performance on the Corsi Block-Tapping Task backward and interference at work, as well as between the time to complete part B of the Trail Making Test - B (TMT-B) and fatigue. An unexpected relationship was found between errors on part B of the HT and interference at work., Conclusion:  The results suggest lower efficiency in processes such as inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility, difficulties in working memory and non-executive processes such as processing speed. Even with pain, anxiety, and depression controlled, some relationships between EFs and functionality were observed, indicating that these symptoms do not fully explain this relationship. Background: Feedback is an essential tool for learning and improving performance in any sphere of education, including training of resident physicians. The learner's perception of the feedback they receive is extremely relevant to their learning progress, which must aim at providing qualified care for patients. Studies pertinent to the matter differ substantially with respect to methodology, population, context, and objective, which makes it even more difficult to achieve a clear understanding of the topic. A scoping review on this theme will unequivocally enhance and organize what is already known., Objective: The aim of this study is to identify and map out data from studies that report surgical residents' perception of the feedback received during their education., Methods: The review will consider studies on the feedback perception of resident physicians of any surgical specialty and age group, attending any year of residency, regardless of the type of feedback given and the way the perceptions were measured. Primary studies published in English, Spanish, and Portuguese since 2017 will be considered. The search will be carried out in 6 databases and reference lists will also be searched for additional studies. Duplicates will be removed, and 2 independent reviewers will screen the selected studies' titles, abstracts, and full texts. Data extraction will be performed through a tool developed by the researchers. Descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis (content analysis) will be used to analyze the data. A summary of the results will be presented in the form of diagrams, narratives, and tables., Results: The findings of this scoping review were submitted to an indexed journal in July 2024, currently awaiting reviewer approval. The search was executed on March 15, 2024, and resulted in 588 articles. After the exclusion of the duplicate articles and those that did not meet the eligibility criteria as well as the inclusion of articles through a manual search, 13 articles were included in the review., Conclusions: Conducting a scoping review is the best way to map what is known about a subject. The district of Perus, located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, is renowned for its weathered granitic-pegmatitic masses, which harbor a significant number of uraniferous minerals that contribute to ionizing radiation levels up to 20 times higher than the background levels. In this study, aseptically collected mineral samples from the area were utilized to isolate 15 microorganisms, which were subjected to pre-screening tests involving UV-C and UV-B radiation. The microorganisms that exhibited the highest resistance to ultraviolet (UV) radiation were selected for the construction of survival curves for UV-C, broad-band UV-B, and solar simulation resistance testing. Subsequently, the four strains that demonstrated superior survival capabilities under UV radiation exposure were chosen for 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Among these, Nocardioides sp. O4R and Nocardioides sp. MA2R demonstrated the most promising outcomes in the UV radiation resistance assessments, showcasing comparable performance to the well-established radioresistant model organism Deinococcus radiodurans . These findings underscore the potential of naturally occurring high-radiation environments as valuable resources for the investigation of UV-resistant microorganisms. Astrobiology 24, 783-794.

Objective: to investigate excessive daytime sleepiness prevalence among nursing technicians and the association with sleep quality and memory., Methods: a cross-sectional, inferential study, carried out in a hospital unit in the state of Goiás between December 2020 and January 2021. Assessments were carried out using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire, instruments validated for the Brazilian context. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyzes were performed., Results: the sample consisted of 189 nursing technicians with a 40.9% excessive daytime sleepiness prevalence. In multivariate models, excessive daytime sleepiness was not associated with sleep quality, however there was a significant association with overall memory failures., Conclusions: study results demonstrate a high excessive daytime sleepiness occurrence, an association with overall memory failures and the need for psychosocial interventions for nursing technicians.

Cat-transmitted sporotrichosis is caused by the emerging fungal pathogen Sporothrix brasiliensis and constitutes a significant public health issue that affects people living in resource-poor urban centers in Brazil. The lack of knowledge about transmission dynamics makes it difficult to propose public health policies to contain the advance of sporotrichosis. We describe the recent emergence of 1,176 cases of sporotrichosis in cats (2016 to 2021) in the metropolitan region of Recife, Brazil, leading to significant zoonotic transmission and an overwhelming occurrence of S. brasiliensis as the etiological agent. Most cases were from cats in the cities of Olinda (408/1,176; 34.70%), Jaboatão dos Guararapes (332/1,176; 28.23%), and Recife (237/1,176; 20.15%). Molecular typing using amplified fragment length polymorphism (EcoRI-GA/MseI-AG) revealed low polymorphic information content (PIC = 0.2499) and heterozygosity (H = 0.2928), typical of an outbreak scenario. Dendrogram and multivariate cluster analysis revealed that isolates from Pernambuco are closely related to Rio de Janeiro isolates. We report a substantial occurrence of MAT1-2 idiomorphs in the metropolitan region of Recife (0:60 ratio; χ 2  = 60.000, P < 0.0001). The limited population differentiation and genetic diversity of the isolates from Pernambuco suggest a recent introduction, possibly via a founder effect, from the parental population in Rio de Janeiro. Our findings emphasize the critical importance of molecular surveillance of S. brasiliensis for outbreak response. A comprehensive one-health strategy is mandatory to control the spread of cat-transmitted sporotrichosis driven by S. brasiliensis, encompassing sanitary barriers, quick diagnosis, and treatment., (© 2024. Past and present habitability of Mars have been intensely studied in the context of the search for signals of life. Despite the harsh conditions observed today on the planet, some ancient Mars environments could have harbored specific characteristics able to mitigate several challenges for the development of microbial life. In such environments, Fe 2+ minerals like siderite (already identified on Mars), and vivianite (proposed, but not confirmed) could sustain a chemolithoautotrophic community. In this study, we investigate the ability of the acidophilic iron-oxidizing chemolithoautotrophic bacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans to use these minerals as its sole energy source. A. ferrooxidans was grown in media containing siderite or vivianite under different conditions and compared to abiotic controls. Our experiments demonstrated that this microorganism was able to grow, obtaining its energy from the oxidation of Fe 2+ that came from the solubilization of these minerals under low pH. Additionally, in sealed flasks without CO 2 , A. ferrooxidans was able to fix carbon directly from the carbonate ion released from siderite for biomass production, indicating that it could be able to colonize subsurface environments with little or no contact with an atmosphere. These previously unexplored abilities broaden our knowledge on the variety of minerals able to sustain life. Visceral leishmaniasis is a disease caused by protozoa of the species Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum (syn = Leishmania chagasi ) and Leishmania (Leishmania) donovani , which are transmitted by hematophagous insects of the genera Lutzomyia and Phlebotomus . The domestic dog ( Canis familiaris ) is considered the main urban reservoir of the parasite due to the high parasite load on its skin, serving as a source of infection for sandfly vectors and, consequently, perpetuating the disease in the urban environment. Some factors are considered important in the perpetuation and spread of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) in urban areas, such as stray dogs, with their errant behavior, and houses that have backyards with trees, shade, and organic materials, creating an attractive environment for sandfly vectors. CVL is found in approximately 50 countries, with the number of infected dogs reaching millions. However, due to the difficulty of controlling and diagnosing the disease, the number of infected animals could be even greater. In the four continents endemic for CVL, there are reports of disease expansion in endemic countries such as Brazil, Italy, Morocco, and Tunisia, as well as in areas where CVL is not endemic, for example, Uruguay. Socio-environmental factors, such as migration, drought, deforestation, and global warming, have been pointed out as reasons for the expansion into areas where it had been absent. Thus, the objective of this review is to address (i) the distribution of CVL in endemic areas, (ii) the role of the dog in the visceral leishmaniasis epidemiology and the factors that influence dog infection and the spread of the disease, and (iii) the challenges faced in the control of CVL.

Introduction: University students have been particularly affected during the COVID-19 pandemic, and several sociodemographic and behavioral factors may be associated with the risk of overweight in this population. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the pandemic on the eating behavior and nutritional status of university students, and the factors associated with these changes, especially the role of intuitive eating in this process., Methods: This is a repeated measures observational study with data collected in the first and third year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, from students over the age of 18 in the undergraduate programs of a federal university in southeastern Brazil. The survey was conducted using an online form. Eating behavior was assessed using the "Intuitive Eating Scale-2"., Results: 251 university students took part, most of them female with a median age of 22. There was an increase in body mass index (BMI) and intuitive eating score between the two periods. In the first year of the pandemic, being female and using tobacco reduced the chances of students being overweight. Living in a marital relationship, worrying about weight gain and body dissatisfaction increased the chances of this outcome. In the third year of the pandemic, it was observed that practicing restrictive diets, having inadequate body perception, worrying about weight gain and living in a marital relationship increased the chances of students being overweight. Being female and eating more intuitively, in line with bodily needs, reduced these odds, demonstrating a protective role in this scenario., Conclusion: There was an increase in BMI and intuitive eating score during the pandemic. Sociodemographic, lifestyle and behavioral variables had both a positive and negative influence on nutritional status. Intuitive eating was shown to be a protective factor during this period, reducing the chances of being overweight in this population. Thus, more intuitive eating may favor greater weight stability, and may, therefore, have helped to reduce the impact of the pandemic on weight gain. Microplastics have long been present in marine and terrestrial environments and have emerged in recent decades as a global environmental concern. This pollutant has been detected with increasing frequency in Brazilian territory and herein primarily highlights current information and developments about the quantity, distribution, techniques of identification, origins, and sources of microplastics and related pollutants in the Brazilian environment. We evaluated 79 publications from 2018 to December 2022, and some aspects can be highlighted: 27% of studies were published in the Journal Marine Pollution Bulletin; 22% of all studies were conducted in São Paulo city; and 52% of all microplastics found were collected from biota followed by sediment samples. According to the findings given here, microplastics in Brazilian habitats, which can reach concentrations of 4367 to 25,794 items m -2 in sediments, are becoming a serious problem in the Anthropocene age, and some topics regarding the open questions in this area were pointed out in this review., (© 2023. Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) include Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Several studies relate eating habits to different aspects of IBD, such as progression and worsening of the clinical condition. Therefore, many natural products (NPs) such as polyphenols and carotenoids have been identified as promising agents in supporting IBD. An interesting source for obtaining bioactive NPs is the by-products of the food industry. The present study evaluated the potential beneficial effect of a standardized extract (CAE) obtained from cashew apple bagasse in the dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis model in mice. This was the first time that CAE had been evaluated in this experimental model. Chemical evaluation of CAE identified carotenoids (96.28 ± 0.15 mg/100 g), phenolic compounds (37.49 ± 0.64 mg/100 g), and a mixture of anacardic acids (C15:3 = 94.2 ± 0.6 mg/100 g; C15:2 = 108.4 ± 0.1 mg/100 g; C15:1 = 214.8 ± 0.2 mg/100 g). Administration of CAE (500 mg/kg, 4 days, p.o.) after DSS challenge was more effective in delaying disease progression compared with prior treatment (500 mg/kg, 30 days, p.o.), according to the disease activity index. However, no treatment strategy with CAE was able to prevent or inhibit disease progression, since all parameters evaluated (macroscopic, biochemical, and histopathological) in CAE-treated animals were similar to those observed in DSS-challenged animals. Despite the high dose (500 mg/kg), the standardized extract (CAE) did not result in an effective concentration of carotenoids. Furthermore, as some anacardic acids have been reported as histone acetyltransferases inhibitors, there could be a possible antagonistic relationship between carotenoids and anacardic acids. Complementary research will be necessary to test the hypothesis of antagonism. Thus, an optimized extract, with an even higher concentration of carotenoids, obtained from cashew apple bagasse, can be developed as a possible adjuvant food supplement for inflammatory bowel diseases.

The study aimed to assess plasma Myeloperoxidase enzyme (MPO) and Ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) in obese dogs and compare them with ideal body weight dogs. Thirty-two dogs were distributed into two groups according to a 9-point body condition score (BCS), as follows: Control group (n = 16), dogs with a BCS of 4 or 5; Obese group (n = 16), dogs with a BCS of 8 or 9. Plasma MPO and FRAP assays, neutrophil count, lipid profile (cholesterol and triglycerides), and systolic blood pressure (SBP) were evaluated in both groups. The duration of obesity was defined based on history. The obese group showed higher values for body weight, BCS, SBP, neutrophil count, triglycerides, and MPO than the Control group. A positive correlation was observed between MPO concentrations and BCS and body weight. FRAP concentrations showed a positive correlation with the duration of obesity. The results suggested that an inflammatory state caused by obesity may promote increased neutrophil count and MPO concentrations, besides the positive correlation between MPO with BCS and body weight. The obesity in dogs promoted slight active MPO elevation, influenced by body weight, BCS, and neutrophil count. Exogenous enzymes are added to diets to improve nutrient utilization and feed efficiency. A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary exogenous enzyme products with amylolytic (Amaize, Alltech) and proteolytic (Vegpro, Alltech) activity on performance, excretion of purine derivatives, and ruminal fermentation of dairy cows. A total of 24 Holstein cows, 4 of which were ruminally cannulated (161 ± 88 d in milk, 681 ± 96 body weight, and 35.2 ± 5.2 kg/d of milk yield), were blocked by milk yield, days in milk, and body weight, and then distributed in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design. Experimental periods lasted 21 d, of which the first 14 d were allowed for treatment adaptation and the last 7 d were used for data collection. Treatments were as follows: (1) control (CON) with no feed additives, (2) amylolytic enzyme product added at 0.5 g/kg diet dry matter (DM; AML), (3) amylolytic enzyme product at 0.5 g/kg of diet DM and proteolytic enzyme product at 0.2 g/kg of diet DM (low level; APL), and (4) amylolytic enzyme products added at 0.5 g/kg diet DM and proteolytic enzyme product at 0.4 g/kg of diet DM (high level; APH). Data were analyzed using the mixed procedure of SAS (version 9.4; SAS Institute Inc.). Differences between treatments were analyzed by orthogonal contrasts: CON versus all enzyme groups (ENZ); AML versus APL+APH; and APL versus APH. Dry matter intake was not affected by treatments. Sorting index for feed particles with size <4 mm was lower for ENZ group than for CON. Total-tract apparent digestibility of DM and nutrients (organic matter, starch, neutral detergent fiber, crude protein, and ether extract) were similar between CON and ENZ. Starch digestibility was greater in cows fed APL and APH treatments (86.3%) compared with those in the AML group (83.6%). Neutral detergent fiber digestibility was greater in APH cows compared with those in the APL group (58.1 and 55.2%, respectively). Ruminal pH and NH 3 -N concentration were not affected by treatments. Molar percentage of propionate tended to be greater in cows fed ENZ treatments than in those fed CON. Molar percentage of propionate was greater in cows fed AML than those fed the blends of amylase and protease (19.2 and 18.5%, respectively). Purine derivative excretions in urine and milk were similar in cows fed ENZ and CON. Uric acid excretion tended to be greater in cows consuming APL and APH than in those in the AML group. Serum urea N concentration tended to be greater in cows fed ENZ than in those fed CON. Milk yield was greater in cows fed ENZ treatments compared with CON (32.0, 33.1, 33.1, and 33.3 kg/d for CON, AML, APL, and APH, respectively). Fat-corrected milk and lactose yields were higher when feeding ENZ. Feed efficiency tended to be greater in cows fed ENZ than in those fed CON. Feeding ENZ benefited cows' performance, whereas the effects on nutrient digestibility were more pronounced when the combination of amylase and protease was fed at the highest dose., (The Authors. Lactation diets dependent on rumen undegradable protein (RUP) sources derived from soybean meal (SBM) products are generally high in Lys and poor in Met. We conducted an experiment to evaluate the effects of increasing dietary RUP and altering digestible AA supply by inclusion of heat-treated soybean meal (HTSBM) or high-protein corn dried distillers grains with soluble (DDGS) on performance in mid-lactation dairy cows. Twenty-four Holstein cows (200 ± 40 d in milk and 30.0 ± 3.92 kg/d of milk yield) blocked according to parity, milk yield, and days in milk were used in a 3 × 3 Latin square design experiment with 21-d periods. Treatments were (1) control (CON), a diet with 6.0% RUP containing 15.9% SBM as the main protein source; (2) HTSBM, a diet with 6.7% RUP containing 4.4% HTSBM partially replacing SBM; and (3) high-protein DDGS (FP; FlexyPro, SJC Bioenergia), a diet with 6.9% RUP containing 5.34% FP partially replacing SBM and ground corn. Diets had similar crude protein (16.9%) and net energy of lactation. Data were submitted to ANOVA using the mixed procedure of SAS software (SAS Institute Inc.). Treatment differences were evaluated using orthogonal contrasts: (1) increasing RUP (SBM vs. HTSBM + FP) and (2) altering digestible AA supply (HTSBM vs. FP). Cows fed HTSBM and FP had greater intake (values in parentheses represent treatment means of CON, HTSBM, and FP, respectively) of neutral detergent fiber (7.14, 7.35, and 7.69 kg/d), crude protein (4.27, 4.37, and 4.51 kg/d), and ether extract (0.942, 0.968, and 1.04 kg/d) compared with cows fed CON. Feeding FP resulted in greater intake of neutral detergent fiber and ether extract compared with HTSBM. Cows fed HTSBM and FP had lower sorting index for feed particles <4 mm than cows fed CON (1.029, 1.008, and 1.022). Feeding FP resulted in greater intake of feed particles <4 mm compared with HTSBM. Treatments containing HTSBM or FP tended to decrease organic matter digestibility (72.4, 71.2, and 71.1%), but no other effects were detected in digestibility of neutral detergent fiber, crude protein, or ether extract. No evidence for differences among treatments was detected in excretion of purine derivatives in milk and urine. Milk yield was greater in cows fed HTSBM or FP than in cows fed CON (28.0, 28.9, and 28.8 kg/d, respectively). Cows fed HTSBM or FP tended to have greater energy-corrected milk and protein yield compared with those fed CON. Milk protein concentration was greater in DDGS cows than those in the HTSBM group (3.45 and 3.40%, respectively). No differences were detected in milk fat yield and concentration, milk urea nitrogen, feed efficiency, or serum concentrations of urea and glucose. Overall, increasing dietary RUP by feeding HTSBM or FP improved intake of nutrients and milk yield without affecting feed efficiency. Found in humid regions and waterways and popularly used to treat gastrointestinal problems among other applications, the present study evaluated the M. aquatica essential oil (OEMa) as a therapeutic alternative to treat gastrointestinal disorders. Produced by steam distillation, chemical composition of OEMa was determined by GC-MS analysis. The ethanol-induced ulcer and the dose-repeated acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)-induced gastrointestinal lesions models in rats evaluated, respectively, the prophylactic and curative effects of EOMa on peptic ulcers. The EOMa's effect on gastric secretion, gastric mucus and gastrointestinal motility were evaluated in in vivo models. The curative effect of EOMa on acute colitis was evaluated using the DSS-induced colitis model in mice. Obtained in 0.17% yield (w/w), with carvone (54.82 ± 1.39 g/100 g oil) as the main constituent, EOMa (at 75 mg/kg) showed potent gastroprotective effect (> 90%) mediated by non-protein sulfhydryl compounds (NPSH) and nitric oxide (NO) modulation alongside reduction in gastric secretion volume and total acidity. EOMa did not affect gastric mucus production and gastrointestinal motility. In dose-repeated ASA-induced gastrointestinal lesions model, EOMa (at 25 mg/kg) promoted the inflammatory process resolution both in gastric and duodenal walls by modulating NPSH, NO and myeloperoxidase levels. Despite delaying in 2 days the clinical symptoms worsening, EOMa (at 25 mg/kg) was not able to protect colon tissues from DSS-induced acute colitis as evidenced by macroscopic, biochemical, and histopathological parameters. Water reservoirs have been constructed in hot semi-arid regions, which may be used to produce fish. The present study described major features of the economic, social, and environmental characteristics of a net-cage Nile tilapia production system, stocked with 100 and 120 fish/m 3 , implemented in a reservoir in the hot semi-arid region of Brazil during an extended drought event. The production cycle was reduced from 6-8 to 4 months because of the lack of water in the reservoir. This resulted in the harvest of small fish weighting ~300-350 g that reached a low value in the market. As a consequence, indicators of financial feasibility showed low values, which were not attractive for entrepreneurs. Nevertheless, for both stocking densities, the monthly income was about US$ 1,500.00, which is 5-fold the minimum wage in the region. In general, the activity has a positive social impact, despite the low contribution to development of the local economy and food security because most supply came from outside and fish were sold to distant regions. Various age and ethnic groups were represented among the employees, but the enterprise was operated only by men. Phosphorus accumulations in the reservoir were 2.1 and 2.0 kg/t of fish produced and particulate material accumulations of 110 and 100 kg/t of fish production for 125 fish/m 3 and 100 fish/m 3 , respectively. The study indicated that the Nile tilapia culture in hot semi-arid region is strongly affected by long drought events and adaptations in the planning and management should be done when implementing the systems. Objective: To compare the efficacy of dialysate drainage between Tenckhoff (TC) catheter and Blake (BL) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) in healthy rabbits., Design: Prospective experimental study., Setting: University Teaching Hospital and University research laboratory., Animals: Twenty healthy, male, New Zealand rabbits., Interventions: PD via the TC catheter and the BL abdominal drain was compared during 3 consecutive days of dialysis delivery., Measurements and Main Results: One session of PD was performed per day for 3 consecutive days (S1: first session, S2: second session, S3: third session) and each session included 4 cycles of infusion, dwell of dialysate in the abdomen, and drainage. Data collection included daily urea, creatinine, alanine aminotransferase, albumin, and potassium, in addition to hematological parameters (eg, RBC, HCT, hemoglobin, WBC, and platelet count). Statistical analysis using a mixed linear model with multiple comparisons was performed. The BL drain resulted in an increase in volume drained (ml/kg) when compared to TC catheter on S2 (third and fourth cycles) and S3 (first and second cycles)., Conclusions: The BL drain proved to be superior to the TC catheter, being capable of draining a larger volume of dialysate during the drainage processes in the peritoneal PD of healthy rabbits. Peppers (Capsicum spp.) contain capsaicin, an organic compound with a group of alkaloids that has shown thermoregulation properties in humans and mice, and may influence glucose and lipid metabolism in ruminants. An experiment was conducted to evaluate different doses of a feed additive containing encapsulated pepper on milk yield and composition, dry matter intake, feed sorting index, total-tract apparent digestibility of nutrients, purine derivatives excretion, and serum concentrations of urea-N and glucose, N excretion, respiration rate, rectal temperature, and skin temperature in different regions (forehead, face, and rumen). Thirty-six Holstein cows (150 ± 102.1 d in milk and 29.3 ± 5.81 kg/d milk yield) were used in a 9-wk randomized complete block (n = 12) design experiment. Following a 2-wk covariate period, cows were blocked according to parity, days in milk, and milk yield and were randomly assigned to the following treatments: 0 (CAP0), 0.75 (CAP75), or 1.5 (CAP150) g/d of a feed additive containing encapsulated pepper (1 g/kg, Capcin; NutriQuest) added to the concentrate along with minerals. Treatment differences were evaluated through orthogonal contrasts (CAP0 vs. CAP75 + CAP150 or CAP75 vs. CAP150). The average temperature-humidity index during the experiment was 72.0 ± 2.07. Dry matter intake was greater in cows fed a feed additive containing encapsulated pepper (CAP) treatments (CAP75 and CAP150) compared with CAP0. Cows fed CAP150 tended to have greater dry matter intake than those in CAP75 group. Feeding CAP decreased sorting for feed particles with size between 8 and 4 mm. An interaction effect between treatment and week was observed for crude protein digestibility whereas cows fed CAP150 had the greatest digestibility on the third week of experiment. Orthogonal contrasts did not detect differences in serum concentrations of glucose and urea-N, or purine derivatives excretion. Nitrogen excretion (as % of N intake) in milk, urine, and feces was not altered by treatments. Feeding CAP increased yields of 3.5% fat-corrected milk, fat, protein, and lactose. A tendency toward greater milk protein content was observed for cows fed CAP150 than CAP75. No differences were detected on respiration rate, rectal temperature, and skin temperature of cows. A feed additive containing encapsulated pepper fed at 0.75 or 1.5 g/d can improve yield of fat-corrected milk and milk solids by increasing feed intake without affecting nutrient digestibility and body temperature of lactating cows during the hot season., (The Authors. Canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) is caused by Leishmania infantum and is endemic in many areas of southeastern Brazil. We have hypothesized that the prevalence of infection by L. infantum in dogs housed in open-admission animal shelters is beyond the range of 3.4 - 9.6% reported among dogs domiciled in similar CVL-endemic areas. Hence, this study aimed to determine the rate of L. infantum infection among dogs maintained in shelters and to investigate the epidemiology of CVL in such environments by analyzing hematological and biochemical parameters. A total of 627 dogs from 17 different shelters across the State of Minas Gerais were screened using the Dual-Path Platform test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and 211 (33.6%) were found to be seropositive in both tests. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was performed on skin, bone marrow and lymphoid tissues of 118 seropositive dogs with inconclusive CVL clinical diagnosis and, of these, 78 (66.1%) were PCR+ for L. infantum and 7 (5.9%) were PCR+ for L. amazonensis. One dog presented a PCR-RFLP profile that was consistent with co-infection by both parasites. Leishmania amazonensis DNA was detected in skin samples of six single-infected dogs and this constitutes a novel finding. Dogs infected only with L. amazonensis were less debilitated than those infected by L. infantum, which showed typical clinical manifestations of CVL. The co-infected dog showed only mild clinical signs. The results presented herein not only support our original hypothesis but also suggest that dogs are potential reservoirs of L. amazonensis. Public health authorities should acknowledge their responsibility towards animals in collective shelters, recognize that they are potential foci of zoonotic diseases, and establish proper functioning directives to minimize transmission to humans and to other dogs., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Dry malt extract (DME) has been used in animal nutrition as an alternative source of rapidly fermentable carbohydrate. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the partial replacement of ground corn with DME in diets of dairy cows on apparent digestibility, ruminal fermentation, predicted rumen microbial protein supply, N excretion, serum urea-N concentration, and milk yield and composition. Twenty-eight Holstein cows (35.3 ± 5.88 kg/d milk yield and 148 ± 78 d in milk), 4 of which were rumen cannulated, were blocked according to the presence of rumen cannulas, parity, milk yield, and days in milk and enrolled into a crossover design experiment. Experimental periods lasted 21 d, of which the first 14 d were allowed for treatment adaptation and 7 d were used for data collection and sampling. Treatment sequences were composed of control (CON) or DME from barley (Liotécnica Tecnologia em Alimentos) replacing ground corn at 7.62% diet dry matter (~2 kg/d). Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS (SAS Institute Inc.) modeling the fixed effects of treatment, period, and their interaction, in addition to the random effect of animal. Ruminal fermentation data were analyzed as repeated measures including time and its interaction with treatment in the previous model as fixed effects. Treatments did not affect nutrient intake or feed sorting. Dry malt extract increased apparent digestibility of CP. Feeding DME decreased ruminal pH and molar percentage of butyrate and increased molar percentage of acetate. No treatment effects were detected for predicted rumen microbial protein supply or N excretion. Cows fed DME had lower serum urea-N concentration than CON cows. Dry malt extract increased yields of actual milk, 3.5% fat-corrected milk, fat, and protein, and improved feed efficiency (fat-corrected milk ÷ dry matter intake). Cows fed DME had lower milk urea nitrogen content in comparison with CON cows. Avocado (Persea americana) is a widely consumed fruit and a rich source of nutrients and phytochemicals. Its industrial processing generates peels and seeds which represent 30% of the fruit. Environmental issues related to these wastes are rapidly increasing and likely to double, according to expected avocado production. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the potential of hexane and ethanolic peel (PEL-H, PEL-ET) and seed (SED-H, SED-ET) extracts from avocado as sources of neuroprotective compounds. Minerals, total phenol (TPC), total flavonoid (TF), and lipid contents were determined by absorption spectroscopy and gas chromatography. In addition, phytochemicals were putatively identified by paper spray mass spectrometry (PSMS). The extracts were good sources of Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, ω-6 linoleic acid, and flavonoids. Moreover, fifty-five metabolites were detected in the extracts, consisting mainly of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and alkaloids. The in vitro antioxidant capacity (FRAP and DPPH), acetylcholinesterase inhibition, and in vivo neuroprotective capacity were evaluated. PEL-ET was the best acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, with no significant difference (p > 0.05) compared to the control eserine, and it showed neither preventive nor regenerative effect in the neuroprotection assay. SED-ET demonstrated a significant protective effect compared to the control, suggesting neuroprotection against rotenone-induced neurological damage.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is attractive for use in next-generation nanoelectronic devices and exhibits great potential for humidity sensing applications. Herein, MoS 2 ink was successfully prepared via a simple exfoliation method by sonication. The structural and surface morphology of a deposited ink film was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The aerosol-printed MoS 2 ink sensor has high sensitivity, with a conductivity increase by 6 orders of magnitude upon relative humidity increase from 10 to 95% at room temperature. The sensor also has fast response/recovery times and excellent repeatability. Possible mechanisms for the water-induced conductivity increase are discussed. An analytical model that encompasses two ionic conduction regimes, with a percolation transition to an insulating state below a low humidity threshold, describes the sensor response successfully. Statement of Problem: Frequent maintenance because of the limited lifetime of overdenture attachments with O-rings has led to the development of materials that might improve their functionality and longevity. However, testing of newly developed attachment materials is lacking., Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate a newly developed attachment made of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) for an implant-retained overdenture., Material and Methods: Specimens of PEEK, polyacetal, and Teflon O-ring materials were prepared for analysis of roughness, surface hardness, and compressive strength. For the fatigue resistance test, new specimens based on acrylic resin were subjected to 2880 insertion and removal cycles. Compression and roughness data were compared with the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn post hoc test; hardness data with ANOVA and t test; and fatigue and stereomicroscopy with ANOVA with repeated measures, t test, and Bonferroni adjustment (α=.05)., Results: Polyacetal had the lowest surface roughness (P=.038). There was a significant difference in hardness among the materials (P<.05). PEEK presented the highest compressive strength among the materials (P<.001). For the fatigue resistance, only polyacetal showed a difference between the initial time-point (P<.05) and subsequent time-points. Polyacetal had a higher fatigue resistance than Teflon (P<.001) and PEEK (P<.05). Regarding the internal deformation of the attachments, a significant difference was observed among the materials (P<.05)., Conclusions: PEEK showed promising results regarding the physicomechanical properties necessary for use as an overdenture attachment when compared with other evaluated materials. Mastitis affects a high proportion of dairy cows and is still one of the greatest challenges faced by the dairy industry. Staphylococcal bacteria remain the most important cause of mastitis worldwide. We investigated how distinct staphylococcal species evade some critical host defense mechanisms, which may dictate the establishment, severity, and persistence of infection and the outcome of possible therapeutic and prevention interventions. Thus, the present study investigated variations among distinct bovine-associated staphylococci in their capability to resist phagocytosis and to trigger respiratory burst activity of blood and milk polymorphonuclear neutrophil leukocytes (PMNL) in dairy cows. To do so, PMNL of 6 primiparous and 6 multiparous dairy cows were used. A collection of 38 non-aureus staphylococci (NAS) and 12 Staphylococcus aureus were included. The phagocytosis and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by blood and milk PMNL were analyzed by flow cytometry. Phagocytosis, by both blood and milk PMNL, did not differ between S. aureus and NAS as a group, although within-NAS species differences were observed. Staphylococcus chromogenes (a so-called milk-adapted NAS species) better resisted phagocytosis by blood PMNL than the so-called environmental (i.e., Staphylococcus fleurettii) and opportunistic (i.e., Staphylococcus haemolyticus) NAS species. Otherwise, S. haemolyticus was better phagocytosed by blood PMNL than S. aureus, S. fleurettii, and S. chromogenes. No influence of the origin of the isolates within the staphylococci species in the resistance to phagocytosis by blood and milk PMNL was found. Overall, both S. aureus and NAS did not inhibit intracellular ROS production in blood and milk PMNL. Non-aureus staphylococci induced fewer ROS by milk PMNL than S. aureus, which was not true for blood PMNL, although species-specific differences in the intensity of ROS production were observed. Staphylococcus chromogenes induced more blood PMNL ROS than S. fleurettii and S. haemolyticus, and as much as S. aureus. Conversely, S. chromogenes induced fewer milk PMNL ROS than S. aureus. The origin of the isolates within the staphylococci species did not affect the ROS production by blood and milk PMNL. In conclusion, our study showed differences in staphylococci species in evading phagocytosis and triggering ROS production, which may explain the ability of some staphylococci species (i.e., S. aureus and S. chromogenes) to cause persistent infection and induce inflammation., (The Authors. Endozoochory by waterbirds is particularly relevant to the dispersal of non-flying aquatic invertebrates. This ecological function exercised by birds has been demonstrated in different biogeographical regions, but there are no studies for the neotropical region. In this work, we identified propagules of invertebrates in faeces of 14 syntopic South American waterbird species representing six families, and hatched additional invertebrates from cultured faeces. We tested whether propagule abundance, species richness and composition varied among bird species, and between the cold and warm seasons. We found 164 invertebrate propagules in faecal samples from seven different waterbirds species, including eggs of the Temnocephalida and Notonectidae, statoblasts of bryozoans (Plumatella sp.) and ephippia of Cladocera. Ciliates (including Paramecium sp. and Litostomatea), nematodes and rotifers (Adineta sp. and Nottomatidae) hatched from cultured samples. Potential for endozoochory was confirmed for 12 of 14 waterbird species. Our statistical models suggest that richness and abundance of propagules are associated with bird species and not affected by seasonality. Dispersal by endozoochory is potentially important to a broad variety of invertebrates, being promoted by waterbirds with different ecological and morphological traits, which are likely to drive the dispersal of invertebrates in neotropical wetlands.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of exogenous enzymes on nutrient intake and digestibility, rumen fermentation, and productivity of mid-lactating cows. Experiment 1 was designed to test increasing doses [0, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 g/kg of dry matter (DM)] of a combination of 2 enzyme products with xylanase and β-glucanase activities (Ronozyme Wx and Ronozyme VP, respectively; DSM Nutritional Products) on rumen fermentation and total apparent digestibility. Enzyme combinations had a ratio of endo-1,3(4)-β-glucanase to endo-1,4-β-xylanase of 8:2 (wt/wt). For experiment 1, 8 rumen cannulated lactating cows were used into a double 4 × 4 Latin square design experiment with 14 d of diet adaptation and 7 d of sampling. Despite no differences in feed intake, carbohydrases linearly increased neutral detergent fiber digestibility. Treatments marginally affected rumen fermentation, where a linear trend for lower rumen pH and a linear trend for greater isobutyrate concentration were observed with increasing enzyme dose. A trend for lower rumen NH 3 -N concentration was observed for cows receiving carbohydrases in comparison with control group. When comparing all enzyme treatments against control group, cows fed enzymes tended to produce more 3.5% fat-corrected milk (FCM), produced more milk fat, and had greater blood glucose concentration. Experiment 2 evaluated 3 doses (0, 0.5, or 0.75 g/kg of DM) of the same combination of enzyme products on performance of cows (n = 36) in a complete randomized block (n = 12) design. Cows received treatments for 9 wk. No interaction effects between treatments and time were observed for all variables assessed in this study. In agreement with experiment 1, no differences were detected for feed intake, but cows fed the enzyme products tended to produce more 3.5% FCM and milk fat compared with control. In addition, cows fed enzymes exhibited greater efficiency of FCM production (FCM ÷ DM intake) compared with control. No differences were detected for intake and productivity when comparing the 2 doses of carbohydrases. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of feed additives on intake and digestibility of nutrients, milk yield and composition, feeding behavior, and physiological parameters of dairy cows during the hot season. Forty Holstein cows were assigned to a randomized block design experiment with a 2 × 2 factorial treatment arrangement to evaluate (1) control diet without inclusion of additives; (2) monensin (MON), 20 mg/kg diet dry matter sodium monensin (Rumensin; Elanco); (3) Milk Sacc+ (MS+), inclusion of 40 g/cow per d of Milk Sacc+ (a blend of live yeast and organic minerals, Alltech); and (4) combination of MON and MS+. The average temperature-humidity index throughout the experimental period was 73 ± 2.84 (standard deviation). The experiment lasted 11 wk, including 2 preliminary weeks for covariate adjustments. Cows fed MS+ increased dry matter intake (% body weight), milk yield, 3.5% fat-corrected milk, and solids yield, and cows fed MON had greater milk urea nitrogen content in comparison with counterparts. Feeding MS+ increased the intake of feed particles with size between 8 and 19 mm and decreased the intake of particles shorter than 4 mm compared with other treatments. Rumination time (min/d) and chewing time (min/kg of neutral detergent fiber) were lower for cows fed MS+. Physiologic parameters (i.e., heart and respiratory rates, and body temperature) were not affected by the treatments. Nowadays, hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNS) have shown promising results among 2D nanomaterials. A great effort has been made in recent years to obtain h-BNNS with a high-yield process to enable its large-scale application in industrial plants. In this work, we developed a mechanochemical method for obtaining h-BN nanosheets assisted by NaOH aqueous solution as process aid and aimed the ideal balance between yield, quality and process sustainability. Images obtained by transmission electron microscope suggested a great exfoliation of the h-BNNS in the range of 12-38 layers observed for well dispersed nanosheets. The macroscopic stability study, the polydispersity index, hydrodynamic diameter, and Zeta potential measurements suggested that material prepared in autoclave and ball milling followed by tip sonication process at 40 °C (h-BNNS-T40) could be considered the most promising material. The process used in this case reached a yield of about 37% of nanosheets with an optimal balance between quality and practicality. A hybrid lamellar material was also prepared by drop-casting and dip-coating techniques. An increase on thermal stability in oxidizing atmosphere was observed with respect to the pure graphene oxide (GO). Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy and RAMAN suggested the presence of chemical interactions between h-BNNS and GO in the hybrid. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of partially replacing corn silage (CS) with whole-plant soybean silage (SS) or black oat silage (OS) on nutrient intake and digestibility, in vitro neutral detergent fiber degradability of silages, feeding behavior, rumen fermentation, and performance of dairy cows. Twenty-four lactating Holstein cows (6 of which were rumen-cannulated) with 32.5 ± 4.92 kg/d milk yield, 150 ± 84.8 days in milk, and 644 ± 79.0 kg of body weight were used in a 3 × 3 Latin square design to evaluate the following treatments: (1) corn silage diet (CSD): using corn silage as the only forage source in the diet [48% dietary dry matter (DM)]; (2) whole-plant soybean silage diet (SSD): SS replacing 16% of corn silage from CSD; and (3) black oat silage diet (OSD): OS replacing 16% of corn silage from CSD. The inclusion of OS and SS decreased intakes of DM, organic matter, and crude protein. Corn silage had the greatest in vivo effective degradability of DM, and SS had the least effective degradability of neutral detergent fiber. The OSD treatment decreased milk and protein yields, whereas SSD increased rumen ammonia nitrogen concentration compared with the other diets. Cows fed OSD exhibited a greater preference for feed with small particles (<4 mm) compared with those fed SSD. Cows fed treatments containing either SS or OS at the expense of CS had increased rumination and chewing activities. Odontomas and ameloblastic fibro-odontomas (AFOs) are the result of a developmental anomaly of odontogenic tissues. A literature review of proteins immunoexpressed in odontomas and AFOs was conducted in order to determine which proteins are involved in the pathogenesis of these lesions. AFO was changed to early odontoma in the 2017 WHO classification and will also be discussed in this article. A literature search was performed in the following electronic databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE, Lilacs, Cochrane Collaboration Library, and Science Direct. The research question was developed according to the population, intervention, comparison, and outcome (PICO) framework: Which proteins are related to the differentiation of odontomas and what is their interrelationship with AFOs? Thirty articles met all inclusion criteria and were selected for this systematic review, totaling 355 cases of odontomas and 43 cases of AFO. Similar immunoexpression was observed in odontomas and AFOs. Immunoexpression of proteins involved in cell differentiation was higher in compound odontomas than in complex odontomas. Proteins involved in histodifferentiation and enamel formation were more frequent in odontomas. The immunoexpression of enamel matrix proteins differs between odontomas and tooth germs, with their persistence being related to the development of odontomas. Compound odontomas exhibit the highest immunoexpression of proteins involved in cellular histodifferentiation and the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway is involved in tumor formation., (© 2021. Glioblastoma (GB) is the most common and aggressive form of primary brain tumor, in which the presence of an inflammatory environment, composed mainly by tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), is related to its progression and development of chemoresistance. Toll-Like Receptors (TLRs) are key components of the innate immune system and their expression in both tumor and immune-associated cells may impact the cell communication in the tumor microenvironment (TME), further modeling cancer growth and response to therapy. Here, we investigated the participation of TLR4-mediated signaling as a mechanism of induced-immune escape in GB. Initially, bioinformatics analysis of public datasets revealed that TLR4 expression is lower in GB tumors when compared to astrocytomas (AST), and in a subset of TAMs. Further, we confirmed that TLR4 expression is downregulated in chemoresistant GB, as well as in macrophages co-cultured with GB cells. Additionally, TLR4 function is impaired in those cells even following stimulation with LPS, an agonist of TLR4. Finally, experiments performed in a cohort of clinical primary and metastatic brain tumors indicated that the immunostaining of TLR4 and CD45 are inversely proportional, and confirmed the low TLR4 expression in GBs. Interestingly, the cytoplasmic/nuclear pattern of TLR4 staining in cancer tissues suggests additional roles of this receptor in carcinogenesis. Overall, our data suggest the downregulation of TLR4 expression and activity as a strategy for GB-associated immune escape. Color traits are highly influenced by environmental conditions along the distributional range of many species. Studies on the variation of animal coloration across different geographic gradients are, therefore, fundamental for a better understanding of the ecological and evolutionary processes that shape color variation. Here, we address whether color lightness in velvet ants (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae) responds to latitudinal gradients and bioclimatic variations, testing three ecogeographic rules: The Thermal melanism hypothesis; the Photoprotection hypothesis; and Gloger's rule. We test these hypotheses across the New World. We used photographs of 482 specimens (n = 142 species) of female mutillid wasps and extracted data on color lightness (V). We analyzed whether variation in color is determined by bioclimatic factors, using Phylogenetic Generalized Least Square analysis. Our explanatory variables were temperature, ultraviolet radiation, humidity, and forest indicators. Our results were consistent with the Photoprotection hypothesis and Gloger's rule. Species with darker coloration occupied habitats with more vegetation, higher humidity, and UV-B radiation. However, our results refute one of the initial hypotheses suggesting that mutillids do not respond to the predictions of the Thermal melanism hypothesis. The results presented here provide the first evidence that abiotic components of the environment can act as ecological filters and as selective forces driving the body coloration of velvet ants. Finally, we suggest that studies using animals with melanin-based colors as a model for mimetic and aposematic coloration hypotheses consider that this coloration may also be under the influence of climatic factors and not only predators., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of organic acid (OA; Mold-Zap, Alltech, Nicholasville, KY) inclusion in the total mixed ration (TMR) and feeding frequency of TMR for lactating dairy cows on intake, total-tract apparent digestibility, sorting index, feeding behavior, ruminal fermentation, milk yield and composition, nitrogen balance, and serum metabolites. Twenty-four lactating Holstein cows, 4 with rumen cannulas, with (mean ± standard error) 247 ± 22.2 d in milk, 672 ± 14.6 kg of body weight, and 31.1 ± 1.09 kg of milk yield at the beginning of the experiment were used. The cows were distributed in a balanced and contemporary 4 × 4 Latin square experimental design and randomly assigned in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement to evaluate OA [0 (OA-) or 0.5 (OA+) L of Mold-Zap/tonne of TMR on a natural matter basis] and feeding frequency of TMR offered once a day (1×) or twice a day (2×). Each experimental period lasted 21 d, with 14 d for acclimation and 7 d for data collection. The treatments were tested for TMR, in which its temperature was recorded every 2 h through a 24-h period in each experimental period. Organic acid-treated TMR showed a lower temperature during the 24-h period compared with nontreated TMR. The OA and feeding frequency had no effect on intake and total-tract apparent digestibility of dry matter and nutrients, aside from a tendency to increase neutral detergent fiber digestibility in cows fed 2×. Also, cows fed 1× tended to select more particles between 19 and 8 mm and refused particles smaller than 4 mm, whereas cows fed OA tended to select more particles smaller than 4 mm. Cows fed OA had greater milk yield and milk protein and lactose yields, but tended to have higher 3.5% fat-corrected milk yield. Neither treatment influenced ruminal and serum variables nor milk fat yield and milk production efficiency. Cows fed OA spent less time idling and tended to have lower rumination time, and tended to have higher time spent drinking water and eating, whereas animals fed 1× spent more time drinking water. Under the conditions of this experiment, we conclude that it was possible to reduce the feeding frequency of TMR, without negative effects on dairy cow performance. However, the use of OA resulted in higher milk yield and mitigated TMR temperature rise regardless of feeding frequency. Extracellular adenosine plays important roles in modulating the immune responses. We have previously demonstrated that infection of dendritic cells (DC) by Leishmania amazonensis leads to increased expression of CD39 and CD73 and to the selective activation of the low affinity A 2B receptors (A 2B R), which contributes to DC inhibition, without involvement of the high affinity A 2A R. To understand this apparent paradox, we now characterized the alterations of both adenosine receptors in infected cells. With this aim, bone marrow-derived DC from C57BL/6J mice were infected with metacyclic promastigotes of L. amazonensis. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that L. amazonensis infection stimulates the recruitment of A 2B R, but not of A 2A R, to the surface of infected DC, without altering the amount of mRNA or the total A 2B R density, an effect dependent on lipophosphoglycan (LPG). Log-phase promastigotes or axenic amastigotes of L. amazonensis do not stimulate A 2B R recruitment. A 2B R clusters are localized in caveolin-rich lipid rafts and the disruption of these membrane domains impairs A 2B R recruitment and activation. More importantly, our results show that A 2B R co-localize with CD39 and CD73 forming a "purinergic cluster" that allows for the production of extracellular adenosine in close proximity with these receptors. Prevalence of parasites in wild animals may follow ecogeographic patterns, under the influence of climatic factors and macroecological features. One of the largest scale biological patterns on Earth is the latitudinal diversity gradient; however, latitudinal gradients may also exist regarding the frequency of interspecific interactions such as the prevalence of parasitism in host populations. Dragonflies and damselflies (order Odonata) are hosts of a wide range of ecto- and endoparasites, interactions that can be affected by environmental factors that shape their occurrence and distribution, such as climatic variation, ultraviolet radiation and vegetation structure. Here, we retrieved data from the literature on parasites of Odonata, represented by 90 populations infected by ectoparasites (water mites) and 117 populations infected by endoparasites (intestinal gregarines). To test whether there is a latitudinal and bioclimatic gradient in the prevalence of water mites and gregarines parasitizing Odonata, we applied Bayesian phylogenetic comparative models. We found that prevalence of ectoparasites was partially associated with latitude, showing the opposite pattern from our expectations - prevalence was reduced at lower latitudes. Prevalence of endoparasites was not affected by latitude. While prevalence of water mites was also positively associated with vegetation biomass and climatic stability, we found no evidence of the effect of bioclimatic variables on the prevalence of gregarines. Our study suggests that infection by ectoparasites of dragonflies and damselflies is driven by latitudinal and bioclimatic variables. We add evidence of the role of global-scale biological patterns in shaping biodiversity, suggesting that parasitic organisms may prove reliable sources of information about climate change and its impact on ecological interactions., (Copyright © 2021 Australian Society for Parasitology. Neospora caninum is considered to be one of the main causes of abortion among cattle. The present survey was conducted in the municipality of Rolim de Moura, Rondônia State, Brazil. A questionnaire that investigates the epidemiological aspects of neosporosis was used in the analysis of risk factors associated with the animal-level and herd-level prevalence in dairy cattle. A total of 416 bovine blood samples were collected from 30 farms, and N. caninum antibody levels were measured by Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT). Analysis of dairy cattle serum samples revealed the presence of anti-N. caninum antibodies to be 47.36% (n = 197). Risk factors associated with N. caninum infection were the management system and access locations of dogs. The results of the present survey indicated that infection of dairy cattle with N. caninum is widespread in the studied region of Western Amazon, which has implications for prevention and control of neosporosis in this region. Therefore, integrated control strategies and measures are recommended to prevent and control N. caninum infection in dairy cattle. In addition, direct contact between dairy cattle, dogs and wild animals, which can influence the epidemiology of neosporosis, should be investigated further.

Cashew apple extract (CAE) is a product with intense yellow color obtained from residual fibers of juice processing. Although CAE is known to be rich in carotenoids and anacardic acids, the biological activities of this potential natural food colorant remain unexplored. The present study is the first to investigate the toxicity, antiproliferative and antimicrobial activities of the lyophilized CAE (L-CAE) and its encapsulated products, using maltodextrin (M-CAE) or cashew gum (CG-CAE) as carriers. In addition to their high carotenoid content, the phenolic contents in all materials was determined using UPLC-QTOF-MS E . The acute toxicity was performed using adult zebrafish ( Danio rerio ); antiproliferative activity was assessed using seven different human tumor cell lines [U-251 (glioblastoma), MCF-7 (breast, adenocarcinoma), NCI-ADR/RES (multidrug-resistant ovarian adenocarcinoma), NCI-H-460 (lung, large cell carcinoma), PC-3 (prostate, adenocarcinoma), OVCAR-3 (ovarian adenocarcinoma), and HT-29 (colon, adenocarcinoma)] and an immortalized human keratinocyte (HaCaT) while the antimicrobioal activity was evaluated on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 51812 microorganisms. Both lyophilized and encapsulated CAE samples did not exert acute toxicity against zebrafish neither antiproliferative effect against human tumor and non-tumor cell lines. Further, L-CAE showed potential antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes, which was confirmed using electron microscopy. Natural and synthetic dyes are widely used in foodstuff, medicines and cosmetics industries to enhance and/or restore the color of the final products. This study aimed to evaluate the safety of oral consumption of one carotenoids and anacardic acids-enriched extract (CAE), obtained by green extraction from cashew apple residue fibers, a byproduct of the cashew juice industry. Presenting intense yellow color, CAE could be proposed as a new natural dye. Single and repeated-dose oral toxicity (30 days) were evaluated in female Swiss mice at doses ranging from 50 to 1000 mg/kg, while (anti)mutagenic effects were evaluated in CHO-K1 cells (in vitro Cytokinesis-Block Micronucleus assay - CBMN) and in erythrocytes collected from murine bone marrow (in vivo). CAE did not induce toxic or mutagenic effects in female mice even after 30 days of treatment, regardless of the dose used. Considering cyclophosphamide (CPA)-challenged animals treated with CAE, neither antimutagenic effect was observed nor CAE increased CPA-mutagenic effects although in vitro CBMN results indicated that CAE might increase methyl methanesulfonate-induced micronuclei (MN) frequency besides promoting reduction on CPA-induced MN frequency. The Asian invasive species Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857), known as the golden mussel, causes great economic and environmental damage due to its fixative capacity and accelerated proliferation. Molecular studies for the control of larval and adult forms are of great economic, scientific and technological interest. Here, we first report on the compositional analysis of the L. fortunei proteome obtained through shotgun analysis using LC-MS/MS. Among those 2790 proteins identified, many of them related to secretory processes and membrane receptors. Our second approach consisted in exposing the mollusc to the molluscicide niclosamide to evaluate the induced proteomic alterations. Exposure to niclosamide at 0.25 mg/L for 24 h resulted in a pronounced differential abundance of proteins when compared to those obtained when exposure was reduced to 4 h at 2.3 mg/L. In total, 342 proteins were found differentially expressed in the responsive individuals as revealed by label-free quantitative proteomics. Regarding the affected cell processes were: cell division and differentiation, cytoskeletal organization and compartment acidification (upregulated), and energy metabolism (downregulated). Our findings constitute the first inventory of the expressed proteome of the golden mussel and have the potential to contribute with a more rational proposition of molecular targets for control and monitoring of this species. SIGNIFICANCE: With the recent availability of transcriptomic and genomic data applied to L. fortunei the timing is right to interrogate its putative gene repertoire using proteomic techniques. These have the potential to validate the existence of the predicted genes, infer their relative abundance and quantify their levels as a response to environmental stressors or various agents. Here we provided an inventory of the golden mussel proteome and evaluated its response to the molluscicide niclosamide.
