Transparent YAG ceramic/c-plane sapphire composites were successfully fabricated by pressureless direct thermal diffusion bonding at 1650 ℃ for 10 h in a vacuum. The bonding interfaces could be well defined between YAG ceramic and sapphire, and effective diffusion lengths from YAG to sapphire were calculated to be about 0.5 μm for Nd, Yb and Y ions by Fick’s second diffusion law. Around the bonding interface, neither crystallization of YAG ceramic nor ceramization of sapphire were observed, and besides, growth of YAG grains as well as variation of sapphire growth striation under heating probably induced the instability or even crack of the composite. In addition, precisely parallel polished contact surfaces of ceramic and sapphire are required for enhancing bonding strength. This work presented a clear vision for the bonding interfaces of YAG ceramic/sapphire composite, and will pave the way for robust and efficient composite laser media.

Metallic glasses (MGs), with high density of low coordination sites and high Gibbs free energy state, are novel promising and competitive candidates in the family of electrochemical catalysts. However, it remains a grand challenge to modify the properties of MGs by control of the disordered atomic structure. Recently, nanostructured metallic glasses (NGs), consisting of amorphous nanometer-sized grains connected by amorphous interfaces, have been reported to exhibit tunable properties compared to the MGs with identical chemical composition. Here, it is demonstrated that electrodeposited Ni-P NG is characterized by an extremely high energy state due to its heterogeneous structure, which significantly promotes the catalytic performance. Moreover, the Ni-P NG with a heterogeneous structure is a perfect precursor for the fabrication of unique honey-like nanoporous structure, which displays superior catalytic performance in the urea oxidation reaction (UOR). Atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) nanostructures are predicted to exhibit novel physical properties that make them attractive candidates for the fabrication of electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, TMDCs tend to grow in the form of two-dimensional nanoplates (NPs) rather than one-dimensional nanoribbons (NRs) due to their native layered structure. Herein, we have developed a space-confined and substrate-directed chemical vapor deposition strategy for the controllable synthesis of WS2, WSe2, MoSe2, MoS2, WS2(1−x)Se2x NPs and NRs. TMDC NRs with lengths ranging from several micrometers to 100 μm have been obtained and the widths of TMDC NRs can be effectively tuned. Moreover, we found that TMDC NRs show different growth behaviors on van der Waals (vdW) and non-vdW substrates. The micro-nano structures, optical and electronic properties of synthesized TMDC NRs have been systematically investigated. This approach provides a general strategy for controllable synthesis of TMDC NRs, which makes these materials easily accessible as functional building blocks for novel optoelectronic devices.

Owing to the intrinsically wide bandgap and high uniformity, amorphous Ga2O3 (a-Ga2O3) has been illustrating a great industrial potential for large-area deep ultraviolet (UV) photosensor arrays. However, a seemingly irreconcilable contradiction between high responsivity and long persistent photoconductivity has hampered the growing pace of such devices. In this work, three-terminal InGaZnO (IGZO)/a-Ga2O3 dual-active-layer (DAL) transistors were developed to realize the ability of a-Ga2O3 as the active layer both in switching and sensing. Benefitting from the introduction of ultrathin IGZO electron reservoir and defect control of a-Ga2O3, the DAL device demonstrates more stable and superior gate-control capability with promising performance including high on/off ratio and field-effect mobility of ∼108 and 8.3 cm2/V⋅s, respectively, as well as a small sub-threshold swing (SS) of 0.36 V/dec. Under 254 nm UV illumination, the DAL device manifests a light-to-dark ratio of ∼108, a responsivity of 4.8 × 103 A W−1, a detectivity of 8 × 1015 Jones, and a UV/visible rejection ratio (R254/R400) of 64. The simultaneous achievement of deep UV photo-detection and transistor's switching performance in a-Ga2O3 material offers excellent potential for the construction of large-area active-matrix UV photosensor arrays with the simple and low-cost fabrication process.

Optimal truncated sequential test of the exponential distribution is studied in this paper. Definitions and relative concepts of optimal truncated sequential test are discussed. A heuristic approach, sample space sorting method (SSSM) and the procedures are established to solve a near optimal truncated sequential test. Comparing with the test plans provided by international standard IEC 61124 (2012) and Russian national standard GOST R 27.402 (1995), the results show that the near optimal tests proposed in this paper can keep the error probabilities almost equivalence to the nominal error levels and save more synthetical expected test times and maximum expected test times simultaneously.

Recently, n-n junction with large bandgap offset has been reported to be able to realize rectifier function and improve photoresponse in optoelectronic applications. In this work, we demonstrate a simple way to engineer photodetector based on a MoSe2/ZnO heterojunction. ZnO thin film deposited by DC magnetron sputtering and mechanically exfoliated MoSe2 was coupled to form vertical stacking heterostructure. An atomically sharp n-n junction with type-II band alignment and current rectification behaviour is realised. The MoSe2/ZnO based photodetector exhibits a fast photoresponse speed of 40 μs, and a peak responsivity of 2.7 A/W. It is also demonstrated that the MoSe2/ZnO photodiode can operate under self-powered mode over a broad spectrum.

In this article, we systematically study the optimal truncated group sequential test on binomial proportions. Through analysis of the cost structure, average test cost is introduced as a new optimality criterion. According to the new criterion, the optimal tests on different design parameters including the boundaries, success discriminant value, stage sample vector, stage size, and the maximum sample size are defined. Since the computation time in finding optimal designs by exhaustive search is intolerably long, group sequential sample space sorting method and procedures are developed to find the near-optimal ones. In comparison with the international standard ISO2859-1, the truncated group sequential designs proposed in this article can reduce the average test costs around 20%.

Treatment and management of produced water are of great significance but critical challenges remain due to the huge quantity and complexity of the liquid waste. Here we propose and demonstrate an integrated membrane based system combining electrodialysis, nanofiltration and membrane distillation (ED-NF-MD) for highly efficient treatment of oilfield produced water. Our new system enables zero liquid discharge (ZLD) by concentrating the produced water to an extremely high concentration (up to 373,000 mg/L) at a high water recovery of 99.8% without chemical (e.g. soda or anti-scalants) adding. To the best of our knowledge, such performance is the highest in terms of the final concentration and water recovery among various ZLD technologies. ZLD of our membrane system mainly comes from the metathesis by ED that separates the scaling ions into different streams, thereby creating a scaling-free environment. Basic economic evaluation shows that the total specific energy consumption for ZLD in the whole ED-NF-MD system includes a minimal electrical energy requirement (33 kW·h/m3) and a large thermal energy requirement for MD (154 kW·h/m3). The novel membrane based system shows great potential in realizing real ZLD in produced water treatment by minimizing scaling and thus highly concentrating the feed solution.
