Causal mediation analysis of observational data is an important tool for investigating the potential causal effects of medications on disease-related risk factors, and on time-to-death (or disease progression) through these risk factors. However, when analyzing data from a cohort study, such analyses are complicated by the longitudinal structure of the risk factors and the presence of time-varying confounders. Leveraging data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) cohort study, we develop a causal mediation approach, using (semi-parametric) Bayesian Additive Regression Tree (BART) models for the longitudinal and survival data. Our framework allows for time-varying exposures, confounders, and mediators, all of which can either be continuous or binary. We also identify and estimate direct and indirect causal effects in the presence of a competing event. We apply our methods to assess how medication, prescribed to target cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, affects the time-to-CVD death.

The search for evidence of past life on Mars presents a tremendous challenge that requires the usage of very advanced robotic technologies to overcome it. Current digital microscopic imagers and spectrometers used for astrobiological examination suffer from limitations such as insufficient resolution, narrow detection range, and lack of portability. To overcome these challenges, this research study presents modifications to the Phoenix rover to expand its capability for detecting biosignatures on Mars. This paper examines the modifications implemented on the Phoenix rover to enhance its capability to detect a broader spectrum of biosignatures. One of the notable improvements comprises the integration of advanced digital microscopic imagers and spectrometers, enabling high-resolution examination of soil samples. Additionally, the mechanical components of the device have been reinforced to enhance maneuverability and optimize subsurface sampling capabilities. Empirical investigations have demonstrated that Phoenix has the capability to navigate diverse geological environments and procure samples for the purpose of biomolecular analysis. The biomolecular instrumentation and hybrid analytical methods showcased in this study demonstrate considerable potential for future astrobiology missions on Mars. The rapid progress in machine learning models has significantly boosted the potential for real-world applications such as autonomous vehicles, disease diagnoses, and recognition of emergencies. The performance of many machine learning models depends on the nature and size of the training data sets. These models often face challenges due to the scarcity, noise, and imbalance in real-world data, limiting their performance. Nonetheless, high-quality, diverse, relevant and representative training data is essential to build accurate and reliable machine learning models that adapt well to real-world scenarios. It is hypothesised that well-designed synthetic data can improve the performance of a machine learning algorithm. This work aims to create a synthetic dataset and evaluate its effectiveness to improve the prediction accuracy of object detection systems. This work considers autonomous vehicle scenarios as an illustrative example to show the efficacy of synthetic data. The effectiveness of these synthetic datasets in improving the performance of state-of-the-art object detection models is explored. The findings demonstrate that incorporating synthetic data improves model performance across all performance matrices. Two deep learning systems, System-1 (trained on real-world data) and System-2 (trained on a combination of real and synthetic data), are evaluated using the state-of-the-art YOLO model across multiple metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, and mean average precision. The recent discovery of an axial amplitude (Higgs) mode in the long-studied charge density wave (CDW) systems GdTe$_3$ and LaTe$_3$ suggests a heretofore unidentified hidden order. A theoretical study proposed that the axial Higgs results from a hidden ferroaxial component of the CDW, which could arise from non-trivial orbital texture. Here, we report extensive experimental studies on ErTe$_3$ and HoTe$_3$ that possess a high-temperature CDW similar to other RTe$_3$ (R = rare earth), along with an additional low-temperature CDW with an orthogonal ordering vector. Combining Raman spectroscopy with large-angle convergent beam electron diffraction (LACBED), rotational anisotropy second-harmonic generation (RA-SHG), and muon-spin relaxation ($\mu$SR), we provide unambiguous evidence that the high-temperature CDW breaks translation, rotation, and all vertical and diagonal mirror symmetries, but not time-reversal or inversion. In contrast, the low-temperature CDW only additionally breaks translation symmetry. Simultaneously, Raman scattering shows the high-temperature CDW produces an axial Higgs mode while the low-temperature mode is scalar. The weak monoclinic structural distortion and clear axial response in Raman and SHG are consistent with a ferroaxial phase in RTe$_3$ driven by coupled orbital and charge orders. This article addresses the challenge of UAV survey coverage path planning for areas that are complex concave polygons, containing exclusion zones or obstacles. While standard drone path planners typically generate coverage paths for simple convex polygons, this study proposes a method to manage more intricate regions, including boundary splits, merges, and interior holes. To achieve this, polygonal decomposition techniques are used to partition the target area into convex sub-regions. The sub-polygons are then merged using a depth-first search algorithm, followed by the generation of continuous Boustrophedon paths based on connected components. Polygonal offset by the straight skeleton method was used to ensure a constant safe distance from the exclusion zones. This approach allows UAV path planning in environments with complex geometric constraints.

This paper presents an open-loop articulated 6-degree-of-freedom (DoF) robotic system for three-dimensional (3D) scanning of objects by contact-based method. A digitizer probe was used to detect contact with the object. Inverse kinematics (IK) was used to determine the joint angles of the robot corresponding to the probe position and orientation, and straight-line trajectory planning was implemented for motion. The system can take single-point measurements and 3D scans of freeform surfaces. Specifying the scanning area's size, position, and density, the system automatically scans the designated volume. The system produces 3D scans in Standard Triangle Language (STL) format, ensuring compatibility with commonly used 3D software. Tests based on ASME B89.4.22 standards were conducted to quantify accuracy and repeatability. The point cloud from the scans was compared to the original 3D model of the object.

We introduce the idea of AquaFuse, a physics-based method for synthesizing waterbody properties in underwater imagery. We formulate a closed-form solution for waterbody fusion that facilitates realistic data augmentation and geometrically consistent underwater scene rendering. AquaFuse leverages the physical characteristics of light propagation underwater to synthesize the waterbody from one scene to the object contents of another. Unlike data-driven style transfer, AquaFuse preserves the depth consistency and object geometry in an input scene. We validate this unique feature by comprehensive experiments over diverse underwater scenes. We find that the AquaFused images preserve over 94% depth consistency and 90-95% structural similarity of the input scenes. We also demonstrate that it generates accurate 3D view synthesis by preserving object geometry while adapting to the inherent waterbody fusion process. AquaFuse opens up a new research direction in data augmentation by geometry-preserving style transfer for underwater imaging and robot vision applications.

Two-dimensional (2D) kagome lattice metals are interesting because they display flat electronic bands, Dirac points, Van Hove singularities, and can have interplay between charge density wave (CDW), magnetic order, and superconductivity. In kagome lattice antiferromagnet FeGe, a short-range CDW order was found deep within an antiferromagnetically ordered state, interacting with the magnetic order. Surprisingly, post-growth annealing of FeGe at 560$^{\circ}$C can suppress the CDW order while annealing at 320$^{\circ}$C induces a long-range CDW order, with the ability to cycle between the states repeatedly by annealing. Here we perform transport, neutron scattering, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR) experiments to unveil the microscopic mechanism of the annealing process and its impact on magneto-transport, CDW, and magnetic properties of FeGe. We find that 560$^{\circ}$C annealing creates germanium vacancies uniformly distributed throughout the FeGe kagome lattice, which prevent the formation of Ge-Ge dimers necessary for the CDW order. Upon annealing at 320$^{\circ}$C, the system segregates into stoichiometric FeGe regions with long-range CDW order and regions with stacking faults that act as nucleation sites for the CDW. The presence or absence of CDW order greatly affects the anomalous Hall effect, incommensurate magnetic order, and spin-lattice coupling in FeGe, thus placing FeGe as the only known kagome lattice material with a tunable CDW and magnetic order, potentially useful for sensing and information transmission.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive event-triggered reinforcement learning control for continuous-time nonlinear systems, subject to bounded uncertainties, characterized by complex interactions. Specifically, the proposed method is capable of jointly learning both the control policy and the communication policy, thereby reducing the number of parameters and computational overhead when learning them separately or only one of them. By augmenting the state space with accrued rewards that represent the performance over the entire trajectory, we show that accurate and efficient determination of triggering conditions is possible without the need for explicit learning triggering conditions, thereby leading to an adaptive non-stationary policy. Finally, we provide several numerical examples to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), have greatly revolutionized the process of gathering and analyzing data in diverse research domains, providing unmatched adaptability and effectiveness. This paper presents a thorough examination of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) datasets, emphasizing their wide range of applications and progress. UAV datasets consist of various types of data, such as satellite imagery, images captured by drones, and videos. These datasets can be categorized as either unimodal or multimodal, offering a wide range of detailed and comprehensive information. These datasets play a crucial role in disaster damage assessment, aerial surveillance, object recognition, and tracking. They facilitate the development of sophisticated models for tasks like semantic segmentation, pose estimation, vehicle re-identification, and gesture recognition. By leveraging UAV datasets, researchers can significantly enhance the capabilities of computer vision models, thereby advancing technology and improving our understanding of complex, dynamic environments from an aerial perspective. This review aims to encapsulate the multifaceted utility of UAV datasets, emphasizing their pivotal role in driving innovation and practical applications in multiple domains.

The EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) is a balloon-borne telescope designed to survey star formation over cosmological time scales using intensity mapping in the 420 - 540 GHz frequency range. EXCLAIM uses a fully cryogenic telescope coupled to six on-chip spectrometers featuring kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) to achieve high sensitivity, allowing for fast integration in dark atmospheric windows. The telescope receiver is cooled to $\approx$ 1.7 K by immersion in a superfluid helium bath and enclosed in a superfluid-tight shell with a meta-material anti-reflection coated silicon window. In addition to the optics and the spectrometer package, the receiver contains the magnetic shielding, the cryogenic segment of the spectrometer readout, and the sub-Kelvin cooling system. A three-stage continuous adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (CADR) keeps the detectors at 100 mK while a $^4$He sorption cooler provides a 900 mK thermal intercept for mechanical suspensions and coaxial cables. In this article, we identify a suitable approach to define the character space of a commutative unital locally $C^{\ast}$-algebra via the notion of the inductive limit of topological spaces. Also, we discuss topological properties of the character space. We establish the Gelfand type representation between a commutative unital locally $C^{\ast}$-algebra and the space of all continuous functions defined on its character space. Equivalently, we prove that every commutative unital locally $C^{\ast}$-algebra is identified with the locally $C^{\ast}$-algebra of continuous functions on its character space through the coherent representation of projective limit of $C^{\ast}$-algebras. Finally, we construct a unital locally $C^{\ast}$-algebra generated by a given locally bounded normal operator and show that its character space is homeomorphic to the local spectrum. Digital Twins (DTs) are becoming popular in Additive Manufacturing (AM) due to their ability to create virtual replicas of physical components of AM machines, which helps in real-time production monitoring. Advanced techniques such as Machine Learning (ML), Augmented Reality (AR), and simulation-based models play key roles in developing intelligent and adaptable DTs in manufacturing processes. However, questions remain regarding scalability, the integration of high-quality data, and the computational power required for real-time applications in developing DTs. Understanding the current state of DTs in AM is essential to address these challenges and fully utilize their potential in advancing AM processes. Considering this opportunity, this work aims to provide a comprehensive overview of DTs in AM by addressing the following four research questions: (1) What are the key types of DTs used in AM and their specific applications? (2) What are the recent developments and implementations of DTs? (3) How are DTs employed in process improvement and hybrid manufacturing? (4) How are DTs integrated with Industry 4.0 technologies? By discussing current applications and techniques, we aim to offer a better understanding and potential future research directions for researchers and practitioners in AM and DTs.

We discuss the effect of the quark anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) on the neutral dense quark matter under magnetic fields based on the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model at finite baryon density. To address its correlation with the chiral symmetry, we consider a simplified situation: the model includes the two-quark flavors under constant magnetic fields, and incorporates the effective interaction of the quark AMM linked to the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. We then examine the equation of state (EoS) in cases with and without magnetization for anatomizing the thermodynamic quantities. Without the magnetization, a small magnetic field stiffens the EoS, but with increasing the magnetic field, the EoS tends to soften. The stiffness of the EoS is found to be influenced by the magnetic effect on the critical chemical potential of the chiral phase transition and the quark number density at this critical point. As a result, the mass and radius of the neutral dense quark matter increase with the small magnetic field but turn to decrease as the magnetic field further increases. By including the quark AMM, the critical chemical potential is decreased and the quark number density takes a smaller value. Thus, for the stronger magnetic fields, the quark AMM suppresses the softening effect of the magnetic field on the EoS, leading to increased mass and radius compared to when the quark AMM is absent. In contrast, for the small magnetic field, the contribution of the quark AMM to the EoS is marginal. When the magnetization is taken into account, the magnetic effect on the stiffness of the EoS is overshadowed by the contribution of the magnetization, and the significance of the quark AMM also becomes invisible in the mass-radius relation., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

The widespread availability of code-mixed data can provide valuable insights into low-resource languages like Bengali, which have limited datasets. Sentiment analysis has been a fundamental text classification task across several languages for code-mixed data. However, there has yet to be a large-scale and diverse sentiment analysis dataset on code-mixed Bengali. We address this limitation by introducing BnSentMix, a sentiment analysis dataset on code-mixed Bengali consisting of 20,000 samples with $4$ sentiment labels from Facebook, YouTube, and e-commerce sites. We ensure diversity in data sources to replicate realistic code-mixed scenarios. Additionally, we propose $14$ baseline methods including novel transformer encoders further pre-trained on code-mixed Bengali-English, achieving an overall accuracy of $69.8\%$ and an F1 score of $69.1\%$ on sentiment classification tasks. Detailed analyses reveal variations in performance across different sentiment labels and text types, highlighting areas for future improvement.

Task-oriented dialogue (TOD) systems enable users to achieve their goals through natural language interactions. Traditionally, these systems have relied on turn-level manually annotated metadata, such as dialogue states and policy annotations, which are expensive, time-consuming, and often inconsistent or error-prone. This dependence limits the potential to leverage vast amounts of readily available conversational data for training TOD systems. Additionally, a critical challenge in TOD system design is determining when and how to access and integrate information from external sources. Current approaches typically expect this information to be provided alongside the dialogue context, rather than learning to identify and retrieve it autonomously. While pre-trained large language models (LLMs) have been used to develop TOD systems, their potential to train such systems without laborious annotations remains largely unexplored. This work employs multi-task instruction fine-tuning to create more efficient and scalable TOD systems that can effectively leverage natural language conversational data without manual annotations, while autonomously managing external information retrieval. Our extensive experimental evaluations, using three diverse TOD datasets and three LLMs of varying sizes, demonstrate that our approach can generalize to new, unseen domains. Notably, our approach outperforms both state-of-the-art models trained on annotated data and billion-scale parameter off-the-shelf ChatGPT models.

Large language models (LLMs) have been shown to propagate and amplify harmful stereotypes, particularly those that disproportionately affect marginalised communities. To understand the effect of these stereotypes more comprehensively, we introduce GlobalBias, a dataset of 876k sentences incorporating 40 distinct gender-by-ethnicity groups alongside descriptors typically used in bias literature, which enables us to study a broad set of stereotypes from around the world. We use GlobalBias to directly probe a suite of LMs via perplexity, which we use as a proxy to determine how certain stereotypes are represented in the model's internal representations. Following this, we generate character profiles based on given names and evaluate the prevalence of stereotypes in model outputs. We find that the demographic groups associated with various stereotypes remain consistent across model likelihoods and model outputs. Language Models (LMs) have shown their application for tasks pertinent to code and several code~LMs have been proposed recently. The majority of the studies in this direction only focus on the improvements in performance of the LMs on different benchmarks, whereas LMs are considered black boxes. Besides this, a handful of works attempt to understand the role of attention layers in the code~LMs. Nonetheless, feed-forward layers remain under-explored which consist of two-thirds of a typical transformer model's parameters. In this work, we attempt to gain insights into the inner workings of code language models by examining the feed-forward layers. To conduct our investigations, we use two state-of-the-art code~LMs, Codegen-Mono and Ploycoder, and three widely used programming languages, Java, Go, and Python. We focus on examining the organization of stored concepts, the editability of these concepts, and the roles of different layers and input context size variations for output generation. Our empirical findings demonstrate that lower layers capture syntactic patterns while higher layers encode abstract concepts and semantics. We show concepts of interest can be edited within feed-forward layers without compromising code~LM performance. Additionally, we observe initial layers serve as ``thinking'' layers, while later layers are crucial for predicting subsequent code tokens. Furthermore, we discover earlier layers can accurately predict smaller contexts, but larger contexts need critical later layers' contributions. We anticipate these findings will facilitate better understanding, debugging, and testing of code~LMs.

Diffusion Models are probabilistic models that create realistic samples by simulating the diffusion process, gradually adding and removing noise from data. These models have gained popularity in domains such as image processing, speech synthesis, and natural language processing due to their ability to produce high-quality samples. As Diffusion Models are being adopted in various domains, existing literature reviews that often focus on specific areas like computer vision or medical imaging may not serve a broader audience across multiple fields. Therefore, this review presents a comprehensive overview of Diffusion Models, covering their theoretical foundations and algorithmic innovations. We highlight their applications in diverse areas such as media quality, authenticity, synthesis, image transformation, healthcare, and more. By consolidating current knowledge and identifying emerging trends, this review aims to facilitate a deeper understanding and broader adoption of Diffusion Models and provide guidelines for future researchers and practitioners across diverse disciplines.

This study focuses on the implementation of modern and intelligent logistics vehicles equipped with advanced tracking and security features. In response to the evolving landscape of logistics management, the proposed system integrates cutting edge technologies to enhance efficiency and ensure the security of the entire logistics process. The core component of this implementation is the incorporation of state-of-the art tracking mechanisms, enabling real-time monitoring of vehicle locations and movements. Existing recommendation systems have focused on two paradigms: 1- historical user-item interaction-based recommendations and 2- conversational recommendations. Conversational recommendation systems facilitate natural language dialogues between users and the system, allowing the system to solicit users' explicit needs while enabling users to inquire about recommendations and provide feedback. Due to substantial advancements in natural language processing, conversational recommendation systems have gained prominence. Existing conversational recommendation datasets have greatly facilitated research in their respective domains. Despite the exponential growth in mobile users and apps in recent years, research in conversational mobile app recommender systems has faced substantial constraints. This limitation can primarily be attributed to the lack of high-quality benchmark datasets specifically tailored for mobile apps. To facilitate research for conversational mobile app recommendations, we introduce MobileConvRec. MobileConvRec simulates conversations by leveraging real user interactions with mobile apps on the Google Play store, originally captured in large-scale mobile app recommendation dataset MobileRec. The proposed conversational recommendation dataset synergizes sequential user-item interactions, which reflect implicit user preferences, with comprehensive multi-turn conversations to effectively grasp explicit user needs. MobileConvRec consists of over 12K multi-turn recommendation-related conversations spanning 45 app categories. Moreover, MobileConvRec presents rich metadata for each app such as permissions data, security and privacy-related information, and binary executables of apps, among others. We demonstrate that MobileConvRec can serve as an excellent testbed for conversational mobile app recommendation through a comparative study of several pre-trained large language models.

Additive manufacturing (AM), particularly 3D printing, has revolutionized the production of complex structures across various industries. However, ensuring quality and detecting defects in 3D-printed objects remain significant challenges. This study focuses on improving defect detection in 3D-printed cylinders by integrating novel pre-processing techniques such as Region of Interest (ROI) selection, Histogram Equalization (HE), and Details Enhancer (DE) with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), specifically the modified VGG16 model. The approaches, ROIN, ROIHEN, and ROIHEDEN, demonstrated promising results, with the best model achieving an accuracy of 1.00 and an F1-score of 1.00 on the test set. The study also explored the models' interpretability through Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations and Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping, enhancing the understanding of the decision-making process. Furthermore, the modified VGG16 model showed superior computational efficiency with 30713M FLOPs and 15M parameters, the lowest among the compared models. These findings underscore the significance of tailored pre-processing and CNNs in enhancing defect detection in AM, offering a pathway to improve manufacturing precision and efficiency. This research not only contributes to the advancement of 3D printing technology but also highlights the potential of integrating machine learning with AM for superior quality control.

Traditional search systems focus on query formulation for effective results but face challenges in scenarios such as product searches where crucial product details (e.g., size, color) remain concealed until users visit specific product pages. This highlights the need for intelligent web navigation agents capable of formulating queries and navigating web pages according to users' high-level intents. In response to this need, this work introduces a Grounded Language Agent for Intelligent Web Interactions, called GLAINTEL. Drawing upon advancements in language modeling and reinforcement learning, GLAINTEL investigates the efficacy of transformer-based models in enhancing the search capabilities of interactive web environments. Given the dynamic action space for each state in web navigation, GLAINTEL employs the Flan-T5 architecture and incorporates language modeling and value estimation heads. This work focuses on training smaller language models as agents across various scenarios, systematically evaluating the impact of human demonstrations on the training process. Specifically, we investigate scenarios where no human demonstrations are available and subsequently assess the effective utilization of such demonstrations. We also explore unsupervised domain adaptation for situations where demonstrations are confined to a specific domain. Experimental evaluations across diverse setups demonstrate the effectiveness of training agents in unsupervised settings, outperforming in-context learning-based approaches that employ larger models with up to 540 billion parameters. Surprisingly, behavioral cloning-based methods that straightforwardly use human demonstrations do not outperform unsupervised learning-based methods.
