Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
Modern packages for the design and simulation of cyclotron magnet systems, such as Tosca, CST Studio, Comsol, etc., combined with recent hardware of high performance, allow us to simulate and estimate even a subtle impact on the magnetic field distribution caused by small details and other systems of the accelerator. Such reckoning provides the data to perform and simulate the refilnement of the magnet called the ‘shimming’. That means a signifilcant part of the commissioning stage could be done in ‘virtual reality’. This could substantially decrease the duration of the shimming procedure of the real magnet and the amount of the material wasted on it, eventually this results in a fileld of high-precision which could be compared to real one.

Superconducting cyclotron MSC230 is dedicated for acceleration the proton beam to 230 MeV for medico-biological research. MSC230 is an isochronous four-sector compact cyclotron with a magnetic field in the center of 1.7 T. Acceleration is performed at the fourth harmonic mode of the accelerating radio-frequency (RF) system consisting of four cavities located in the cyclotron valleys. The accelerator will use an internal Penning type source with a hot cathode. Extraction is carried out by an electrostatic deflector located in the gap between sectors and two passive magnetic channels. The current status of the project is discussed., Proceedings of the 13th International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2022, Bangkok, Thailand

Commissioning of a new electron test beam facility Linac-200 comes to the end at JINR (Dubna, Russia). The core of the facility is a refurbished MEA accelerator from NIKHEF. The key accelerator subsystems including controls, vacuum, precise temperature regulation were redesigned or deeply upgraded. The facility provides electron beams with energy up to 200 MeV while the beam current varying smoothly from 40 mA down to almost zero (single electrons in a bunch). The main goal of the facility is providing test beams for particle detector R, studies of novel approaches to the beam diagnostics, and education and training of graduate and postgraduate students. The current status and operation parameters of the facility will be reported., Proceedings of the 12th International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2021, Campinas, SP, Brazil

Physical design of the compact superconducting cyclotron SC230 (91.5MHz) has been performed. The cyclotron can deliver up to 230 MeV beam for proton therapy and medico-biological research. As the cyclotron will have a relatively small magnet field, it is possible to use both superconducting and resistive coil. Besides a superconducting cyclotron we simulate design of the cyclotron with a conventional copper water-cooled coil. Such a solution allows us to achieve a lower price compared to superconducting options, but it becomes a bit heavier., Proceedings of the 22nd International Conference on Cyclotrons and their Applications, Cyclotrons2019, Cape Town, South Africa

The SC200 proton therapy superconducting cyclotron is currently under construction by ASIPP (Hefei, China) and JINR (Dubna, Russia). The radio frequency (RF) system which provides an accelerating electric field for the particles, has been designed and tested in a high-power commissioning. The RF system consists of RF cavity, Low-level RF control system, RF source, transmission network and so on. The main performances of RF cavity meet design and use requirements in the cold test. The RF cavity achieved with an unload Q factor of 5200 at the resonant frequency of 91.5 MHz, 60 kV (Center)~120 kV (Extraction) accelerating voltage and coupling state of S11 -30 dB. The low-level RF (LLRF) system has been tested with an amplitude stability of 0.2% and a phase stability of 0.1 degree in the high-power commissioning. What is more, the cavity operated in a ~50 kW continuous wave state after 4 weeks RF conditioning. Some risks have exposed at higher power test, but related solutions and improvements have been developed. In future work, the target of RF system is effective operation under the overall assembly of cyclotron after further optimization and RF conditioning., Proceedings of the 22nd International Conference on Cyclotrons and their Applications, Cyclotrons2019, Cape Town, South Africa

The option being considered for the FCC-hh high energy injector is a superconducting synchrotron replacing the CERN SPS. The new machine would operate in a cycled mode also to feed experimental areas, much like the SPS nowadays. Due to this specific cycled operation, innovative design and development approaches is required to cope with the AC losses in the superconducting cables and iron yoke. The research joins experience accumulated at CERN and JINR respectively in the design and operation of large systems operated at 1.9 K and, in fast ramped and cycled magnets. The specified parameters are the following: magnet aperture -80 mm; aperture field - 6 T; field ramp 0.2-0.5 T/s; coil conductor - NbTi; magnetic field homogeneity between 0.12 and 6 T of the order of 5·10⁻⁴. The minimization of the cycling losses is particular important. Total thermal losses should be limited to tentatively 2 W/m at 4.2 K. The magnet design, and the results of preliminary tests on a candidate NbTi-wire for building a model magnet are presented and discussed., Proceedings of the 10th Int. The SC200 is a compact superconducting cyclotron, which is designed under the collaboration of ASIPP (Hefei, China)-JINR (Dubna, Russia), for proton therapy. The protons are accelerated to 200 Mev with maximum beam current of 500 nA. The very high mean magnetic field of 2.9T-3.5T (center-extraction) challenges the design of radio frequency (RF) system because of the restricted space. The orbital frequency of the protons is ~45 MHz according to the magnetic field and beam dynamics. The RF system is supposed to operate on 2rd harmonic of ~90 MHz. Two Dee cavities located at the valley of the magnet have been adopted. The preliminary design of RF system, which consists of active tuning, coupling and so on, is presented. The computation and simulation showed good results to ensure the Dee cavities operating at the 2rd harmonic and the proper variation of acceleration voltage versus radius., Proceedings of the 21st Int. Earth surface movements, like earthquakes or industrial noise, can induce a degradation of particle accelerator instantaneous luminosity or even sudden beam losses. This report introduces the HL-LHC project and discusses the importance of monitoring the effects of earthquakes on the present LHC beam orbit and luminosity using a novel instrument, the Precision Laser Inclinometer (PLI). After a brief description of the instrument principles, a comparison of data from the PLI and from the LHC beam instrumentation in the event of earthquakes is given. The aim is to characterize the response of the accelerator to remote or nearby Earth surface movements. The first results from simulation in comparison with data are presented. The impact of vibrations on high luminosity small-sized beam colliders, as in High Luminosity LHC among many other future projects, the possible applications of the PLI instrument and ideas about possible feedback systems conclude the contribution., Proceedings of the 25th Russian Particle Accelerator Conf., RuPAC2016, St. Petersburg, Russia

Professional practice is essential to train an engineer. However, many activities are impossible to run at high school, especially if they require sophisticated equipment such as accelerators. A series of practical engineering courses is being set up at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research to overcome these difficulties while educating students from the JINR Member States. A dedicated 'training' beamline of the Linac-200 electron accelerator is being constructed to practice the beam management and diagnostics, including the operation of standard beamline elements such as a bending dipole, quadrupoles, a sextupole and steerers. Various types of particle detectors can be used in the beam area as well in order to study the passage of electrons and photons through matter and to learn about the detector operation and properties. The practice at the beam will be accompanied by a series of hands-on trainings on radiation protection, vacuum and RF technology, electronics and metrology., Proceedings of the 8th Int. SC200 is a superconducting isochronous cyclotron which generates 200 MeV, 400 nA proton beam for particle therapy. The cold-cathode-type Penning ion gauge (PIG) ion source for the internal ion source of SC200 has been selected as an alternative and preliminary designed. In this paper, design of ion source and test bench are demonstrated. Currently, the properties of ion source have been simulated for a variety of electric field distributions and magnetic field strengths. The secondary electron emission in electromagnetic field has been simulated. It provides reference for the optimization design of arc chamber. In addition, the sample of cold-cathode-type ion source has been tested on the test bench and extracted beam intensity has been measured over 200 μA., Proceedings of the 10th Int. The cyclotron is very compact and light, the estimate total weight is about 30 tons and extraction radius is 60 cm. We have performed simulations of all systems of the SC200 cyclotron and specified the main parameters of the accelerator. Average magnetic field of the cyclotron is up to 3.5 T and the particle revolution frequency is about 45 MHz, these parameters increases the requirements for accuracy of the beam dynamics studies. We have designed and performed beam tracking starting from the ion source. Codes and methods used for the beam tracking are presented., Proceedings of the 7th Int. The photoinjector electron beam quality strongly depends on the laser driver beam quality. For laser beam diagnostics, a "virtual cathode" system was realized at the photogun bench located in the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics (LHEP) of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). The system allows one to image laser beam profile at the cathode. For imaging, the AVINE software suite developed in DESY Zeuthen is used. Equipment for emittance measurement using the slit method was installed. The original emittance calculation software EmCa was created and tested with laser beam., Proceedings of the 11st Int. A 200MeV compact isochronous superconducting cyclotron, named SC200, for proton therapy is under development by collaboration of ASIPP (Hefei, China) and JINR (Dubna, Russia). The radio frequency (RF) system as one of most significant subsystems in cyclotron consists of acceleration cavity, low level RF, RF source and transmission network. SC200 has two cavities connected in the centre, which are operated at 91.5 MHz with second harmonic. To meet the required acceleration voltage, the cavities have been carefully designed with comprised choices between several aspects, such as Q factor, mechanic stability and so on. The low-level RF (LLRF) system has been implemented by using the FPGA to achieve the significant accelerating voltage with an amplitude stability of, Proceedings of the 9th Int. In the current ILC TDR design both the helium vessel shell and the connected pipes are made of expensive titanium, one of the few metals that can be welded to niobium by the electron beam technique. We describe the construction and performance of transition elements, obtained by explosion welding, that can couple the niobium cavity with a stainless steel helium vessel. Several designs for these transitions have been produced and studied showing varying levels of reliability. Based on this experience a new design, including a minimal titanium intermediate layer, has been built. The investigations on ILC siting in the Dubna region and ILC technical activity at JINR are presented. International intergovernmental status of JINR, stable geological and plain relief conditions, comfortable location and well developed infrastructure create a set of advantages of the JINR site in the neighborhood of Dubna. The shallow layout of accelerator tunnel makes it possible to use a communication gallery at the surface instead of second one. This is an effective way of significant cost reduction of all conventional facilities and explicit labor of the project. The results of the preliminary geological engineering surveys along the supposed route of the ILC in Dubna area of Moscow region are presented., Proceedings of the 1st International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2010, Kyoto, Japan

Aim of Super-conducting Test Facility (STF) at KEK is demonstrating technologies for International Linear Collider. In STF, one full RF unit will be developed and beam acceleration test will be made. In super-conducting accelerator, precise RF control in phase and power is essential because the input RF power should be balanced to beam accelerating power. To demonstrate the system feasibility, the beam accelerating test is an important step in R phase of STF and ILC. To provide ILC format beam for STF, we develop an electron source based on photo-cathode L-band RF gun. To generate ILC format beam, we developed a laser system based on Yb fiber oscillator in 40.6 MHz. The pulse repetition is decreased by picking pulses in 2.7 MHz, which meets ILC bunch spacing, 364 ns. The pulse is then amplified by YLF laser up to 8 uJ per pulse in 1 mm. The light is converted to 266 nm by SHG and FHG. Finally, 1.5 uJ per pulse is obtained and 3.2 nC bunch charge will be made. We report the basic performance of the laser system from the accelerator technology point of a view., Proceedings of the 1st International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2010, Kyoto, Japan

Different methods for diagnostic of ultrashort electron bunches are developed at JINR-DESY collaboration within the framework of the FLASH and XFEL projects. Photon diagnostics developed at JINR-DESY collaboration for ultrashort bunches are based on calorimetric measurements and detection of undulator radiation. The MCP based radiation detectors are effectively used at FLASH for pulse energy measurements. The infrared undulator constructed at JINR and installed at FLASH is used for longitudinal bunch shape measurements and for two-color lasing provided by the FIR and VUV undulators. The JINR also participates in development and construction of Hybrid Pixel Array Detector on the basis of GaAs sensors. The special laser source for the KEK photo-cathode gun is developed within the frame of the JINR-IAP-KEK collaboration., Proceedings of the 1st International Particle Accelerator Conference, IPAC2010, Kyoto, Japan

ION sources ,CYCLOTRONS ,PROTON therapy ,PENNING ionization ,POWER resources - Abstract
The SC200 compact superconducting cyclotron is supposed to contribute on the proton therapy under the collaboration of the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP) and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). The energy of cyclotron is 200 MeV with the maximum proton beam current of ~400 nA from the cyclotron outlet. The hot cathode Penning Ionization Gauge (PIG) type proton source will be used in the cyclotron. The purpose of the article is to introduce the inner ion source from the design, simulation and dedicated test. Through the analysis and bench experiment results, the ion source shows a good performance which can provide enough protons to reach the cyclotron beam current. The lifetime of filament can reach more than 50 hours and the source operates at least 1h continuously. A layer-to-layer intensity modulation of the scanned beam is realized with the filament current and the arc voltage that need to vary the extracted beam current between maximum and zero. For the research the request for higher flexibility, in particular for faster beam intensity modulation. In order to explore capabilities of the machine for such research mode, a real-time control system of the arc power supply for ion source has been developed and will also be presented. SC200 is an isochronous cyclotron which generate 200 MeV, 500 nA proton for particle therapy. As an important component of the cyclotron, the ion source chimney needs to be tested and optimized. The simulation results and optimization of ion source in test bench for SC200 are described in this paper. The simulation results show that the extraction slit with different sizes and shapes has an influence on the emittance of the extraction beam. To verify the simulation results, the performance of the designed ion source chimney with optimized slits was measured, including the beam current intensity and the beam emittance.
