Ferry operator Lineas Fred Olsen has improved its service by purchasing the Bonanza Express, a roll-on and passenger ferry that can travel at speeds of up to 35 nautical miles per hour. It is also capable of carrying weights of up to its own deadweight, 800 tons in light and heavy freight. The catamaran-designed ship has three tiers or levels for cargo and passengers. The first tier can accommodate as many as 240 cars and trucks, while the second and third tiers are equipped with aircraft type seating, a bar and restrooms.

Incat-manufactured vessels made two record-breaking Atlantic crossings en route to their new owners. The 91m 'Catalonia,' a wave-piercing catamaran, completed the 2,972 nautical mile distance between New York and Tarifa, Spain, at an average of 38.877 knot (72 km/hr). Buquebus-owned Catalonia broke the 36.65-knot record set by 'Hoverspeed Great Britain' in 1990. The record was broken less than six weeks later by 'Cat-Link V' at an average of 41.284 knots. 'Cat-Link V' is owned by Scandlines Cat-Link A/S.

Scheepswerf Van Diepen has delivered the livestock carrier 'Devon Express' to Vroon BV's subsidiary, Vroon Australia Pty. The new vessel will join the fleet of commercial manager Livestock Express which has 15 livestock carriers in its service. The new ship boasts a host of sophisticated features which include a reverse osmosis plant which produces 70t of potable water a day. The carrier has a deck area of 3,300 square meters and can accomodate some 2,100 heads of cattle. Power is provided by one MaK 6M552C engine which produces 4,050 kW and a speed of 17 knots.

Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding's Saga Challenger, the biggest open hatch bulk carrier in the world, is expected to test the effectivity of using information technology (IT) in ship operation. The IT project is being initiated by the shipping industry and the Norwegian Research Council to evaluate the advantage of using IT in ship operation and maintenance. The project includes systems on documentation, management, maintenance and trouble shooting with Kelvin Hughes integrated navigation system as the central information link.

Dutch ferry service firm Provinical Stoombootdiensten has purchased the double-ended ferry 'Prins Johan Friso' from Schelde Shipbuilding. The ferry measures 113.60 meters in length and features a 210 car capacity, a maximum carrying limit of 1,000 passengers, and five twin-deck double-enders includinga a main freight deck, a passenger deck and an upperdeck. The ship is powered by four diesel electric azimuthing thrusters producing 2,010 brake horsepower or 1,500 kilowatts and a service speed of 14.50 knots.

A new ferry ship built by Ulstein Verft has joined Norway's Hurtigruten service between Bergen and Kirknes. The 700-passenger ship, called Polarlys, has a gross tonnage of 11,348 tons and can cruise quietly and efficiently at 15 knots. It has 480 berths and a deck space for a maximum of 50 vehicles. Polarlys is powered by four Ulstein Bergen nine-cylinder diesel engines Different engine combinations are used for the ship's various speed ranges.

Kvaerner Masa-Yards delivered the first of four liquefied natural gas (LNG)carriers to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Corp. in early 1996. The carrier, called the Mubaraz, incorporates the latest technology required for safe and efficient LNG transportation. The vessel was built using Kvaerner's newly developed ship design and cargo tank construction technology and took less than 33 months from contract to delivery.

The Hai Wang Xing, a bulk carried built by Bremer Vulkan Werft, features a revolutionary conveyor system for unloading cargo faster and safer. The system, which has a very high discharge capacity, is provided with hydraulically-operated gates that unloads cargo with the help of gravity. It is controlled remotely via a mimic diagram and is also provided with indicators to show the ship's list, hold conveyor capacity and total capacity.

Bermuda-based London and Overseas Freighters PLC recently took delivery of the second of three new oil tankers from Japan's Mitusi Engineering and Shipbuilding Company Ltd. Both the London Glory and the London Pride are single-screw, 149,686 dwt Suzemax tankers which are specifically designed for the US market. The two tankers meet the latest US environmental and OPA 90 regulations and they are reportedly the most cost-effective vessels of their type in service today.

French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique has begun sea-testing the first of its five liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers which integrates the Gaz Transport membrane cargo containment system. Malaysia-based Petronas, which owns the Puteran Intan carrier, is scheduled to deliver the ship by July 1994. Chantiers has been engaged in building LNG transportation since 1957 and delivered its first vessel, Descartes, in 1971.

Howaldstwerke-Deutsche Werfte AG (HDW) has completed one of the open-top containers stipulated in the contract with Schiffahrtsknotor Maritime. The Norasia Fribourg's 2,780 TEU capacity is less than the 3,066 TEU of the original design due to the inclusion of rainshelters as a precaution for the ship, which is intended for a Europe to Far East route. Economic features include a streamlined accomodation block, a wide-vision tower, a central fresh cooling water system and an engine located behind the last cargo hold.

The high demand for passenger ferries and other transportation vessels from Australia's shipbuilding industry is allowing it to dominate Pacific Rim shipbuilding. Some 70% of Australian vessels were sold in the region in 1992. Aside from its closeness to the Pacific, the favorable sales are attributed to the innovative designs and high quality of the Australian vessels.

A liquefied natural gas carrier named the Aman Bintulu was recently completed by the NKK Corp. With a capacity of 18,800 cubic meters, the ship is considered to be the smallest gas container transport ever built. It is, however, the first carrier to utilize the Technigaz Mark III membrane cargo containment system. The Mark III system is composed of a 304L stainless steel corrugated membrane primary barrier, a secondary barrier made of aluminum foil and glass cloth and a high-density polyurethane foam insulation layer.

Singapore Shipbuilding and Engineering (SSE) delivered two 400 TEU roro-lolo cargo ships to Tropical Shipping and Construction Co. SSE outbid Japanese, American and European firms for the contract. The major design specification tasked to SSE was cargo handling flexibility, which was resolved via open flush cargo decks and roro-lolo mode configurations. Designers also adopted damage stability requirements mandated by the International Maritime Organization.

Rauma shipyard in Finland has produced Fennica, a vessel which will function as an icebreaker in the Gulf of Bothnia during the winter, and will lay cable or deliver supplies during the summer. The ship's dual-purpose required that engineers design a hull wide enough for ice breaking, yet which would avoid the heavy rolling a wide hull would normally experience in rougher seas. Tests proved the Fennica's superb mobility and performance in both conditions.

Neste Oy took delivery of its new tanker 'Natura' in 1993 from Kvaerner Masa-Yards Turku New Shipyard. The Natura, a 95,358-dwt tanker, features a double-skinned ice-strengthened hull, a dynamic positioning system, and bow loading station. It is serving to transport crude oil from offshore loading stations in the North Sea to ports in Finland, and its LR ice class C rating means it should be able to access southern Finnish ports during normal winters. The vessel was designed in a cooperative effort of ship owner and yard. Neste Oy, a state-owned oil company, has been making use of double skins in ship structures for 20 years. Neste took delivery of a similar ship, the 'Futura', last year. Both ships feature twin medium-speed engines driving one CP propeller for propulsion. Natura's tank capacity (at 98% fill) is 102,818-square meters, in seven cargo tanks.
