1. Enhancing Academic Achievement and Engagement through Digital Game-Based Learning: An Empirical Study on Middle School Students

Abstract

Abundant research has tried to understand how games can be designed and used effectively to improve the learning process and to examine the correlations between digital learning games and student motivation, engagement, and knowledge retention. The current study examined the correlation between learning through digital game-based learning (DGBL) and students' achievements, their sense of involvement, and motivation for learning. Using a quantitative approach, data was drawn from questionnaires and exams in two subjects: literature and language. Participants were 320 male and female students aged 12-14 attending a single middle school participated in the study. The students were randomly divided into three groups, each group was given a unique teaching and learning method. Group 1 studied and practiced using the traditional method (a teacher who teaches in the classroom and worksheets for practice), Group 2 studied with the traditional method but practiced with a digital game and Group 3 learned and practiced using a digital game. The findings showed that the students' attained significantly higher achievements in the group that was taught traditionally but practiced with a digital game. It was also found that when digital learning games are integrated into teaching and learning, the students' motivation and involvement in the class increased.

Abstract

Visual appearance is one of the main cues children rely on when categorizing novel objects. In 3 studies, testing 128 3-year-olds and 192 5-year-olds, we investigated how various kinds of information may differentially lead children to overlook visual appearance in their categorization decisions across domains. Participants saw novel animals or artifacts of varying degrees of similarity to target categories and were asked to place them in 1 of 2 categories. Manipulated across studies was the kind of information pitted against visual similarity: internal information (Study 1, both 3- and 5-year-olds), intentional information (Study 2, both 3- and 5-year-olds), or labels (Study 3, only 5-year-olds). Overall, we found that for 5-year-olds, but not so for 3-year-olds, internal information had a stronger effect on the categorization of animals than of artifacts. Intentional information, in turn, had a stronger effect on both age groups' categorization of artifacts than of animals. Labels too had a stronger effect on 5-year-olds' categorization of artifacts than of animals. These findings are consistent with a domain-specific account of categorization, according to which the weight of different kinds of information on categorization decisions depends on children's developing understanding of domains.

3. [Cervical mass as an isolated finding in primary mediastinal seminoma]

Abstract

Seminoma is a malignant tumor of germ cell origin, usually found in male gonads. Primary seminoma of the mediastinum is rare. The natural history of mediastinal seminoma is growth which is asymptomatic until a late stage, and therefore when diagnosed it is large and causes symptoms of cough, hoarseness and chest pain. A cervical mass is a rare finding in this tumor, and when it is found it is considered a metastasis to a cervical lymph node. This is a case history of a patient referred for evaluation of a mass in the lower neck, which proved to be a direct extension of the primary anterior mediastinal tumor. The tumor was diagnosed pathologically as a primary mediastinal seminoma. Despite the findings of a massive tumor in the mediastinum, the patient had no complaints.
