Search

Topological vacua are a family of degenerate ground states of Yang-Mills fields with zero field strength but nontrivial topological structures. They play a fundamental role in particle physics and quantum field theory, but have not yet been experimentally observed. Here we report the first theoretical proposal and experimental realization of synthetic topological vacua with a cloud of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Our setup provides a promising platform to demonstrate the fundamental concept that a vacuum, rather than being empty, has rich spatial structures. The Hamiltonian for the vacuum of topological number n = 1 is synthesized and the related Hopf index is measured. The vacuum of topological number n = 2 is also realized, and we find that vacua with different topological numbers have distinctive spin textures and Hopf links. Our work opens up opportunities for exploring topological vacua and related long-sought-after instantons in tabletop experiments.

We propose to uncover the topology of a pseudo-Hermitian Chern insulator by quantum quench dynamics. The Bloch Hamiltonian of the pseudo-Hermitian Chern insulator is defined in the basis of the q-deformed Pauli matrices, which are related to the representation of the deformed algebras. We show the bulk-surface duality of the pseudo-Hermitian phases, then further build a concrete relation between the static band topology and quench dynamics, in terms of the time-averaged spin textures. The results are also generalized into a fully nonequilibrium case where the postquench evolution is governed by a Floquet pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Furthermore, we propose a possible scheme to realize the seemingly challenging model in a bilayer lattice and detect the dynamics with a double-quench protocol., 10 pages, 6 figures

Quantum interference between identical single particles reveals the intrinsic quantum statistic nature of particles, which could not be interpreted through classical physics. Here, we demonstrate quantum interference between nonidentical bosons using a generalized beam splitter based on a quantum memory. The Hong-Ou-Mandel type interference between single photons and single magnons with high visibility is demonstrated, and the crossover from the bosonic to fermionic quantum statistics is observed by tuning the beam splitter to be non-Hermitian. Moreover, multiparticle interference that simulates the behavior of three fermions by three input photons is realized. Our work extends the understanding of the quantum interference effects and demonstrates a versatile experimental platform for studying and engineering quantum statistics of particles.

Due to the fundamental position of spin-orbit coupled ultracold atoms in the simulation of topological insulators, the gain/loss effects on these systems should be evaluated when considering the measurement or the coupling to the environment. Here, incorporating the mature gain/loss techniques into the experimentally realized spin-orbit coupled ultracold atoms in two-dimensional optical lattices, we investigate the corresponding non-Hermitian tight-binding model and evaluate the gain/loss effects on various properties of the system, revealing the interplay of the non-Hermiticity and the spin-orbit coupling. Under periodic boundary conditions, we analytically obtain the topological phase diagram, which undergoes a non-Hermitian gapless interval instead of a point that the Hermitian counterpart encounters for a topological phase transition. We also unveil that the band inversion is just a necessary but not sufficient condition for a topological phase in two-level spin-orbit coupled non-Hermitian systems. Because the nodal loops of the upper or lower two dressed bands of the Hermitian counterpart can be split into exceptional loops in this non-Hermitian model, a gauge-independent Wilson-loop method is developed for numerically calculating the Chern number of multiple degenerate complex bands. Under open boundary conditions, we find that the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence does not break down with only on-site gain/loss due to the lack of non-Hermitian skin effect, but the dissipation of chiral edge states depends on the boundary selection, which may be used in the control of edge-state dynamics. The complete geometry of quantum states in parameter space is characterized by the quantum geometric tensor, which contains the quantum metric and Berry curvature as the real and imaginary parts, respectively. When the quantum states are degenerate, the quantum metric and Berry curvature take non-Abelian forms. The non-Abelian (Abelian) Berry curvature and Abelian quantum metric have been experimentally measured. However, an experimentally feasible scheme to extract all the components of the non-Abelian quantum metric tensor is still lacking. Here we propose a generic protocol to directly extract the non-Abelian quantum metric tensor in arbitrary degenerate quantum states in any dimensional parameter space, based on measuring the transition probabilities after parameter quenches. Furthermore, we show that the non-Abelian quantum metric can be measured to obtain the real Chern number of a generalized Dirac monopole and the second Chern number of a Yang monopole, which can be simulated in three and five-dimensional parameter space of artificial quantum systems, respectively. Quantum transducers that can convert quantum signals from the microwave to the optical domain are a crucial optical interface for quantum information technology. Coherent microwave-to-optics conversions have been realized with various physical platforms, but all of them are limited to low efficiencies of less than 50\%, the threshold of the no-cloning quantum regime. Here we report a coherent microwave-to-optics transduction using Rydberg atoms and off-resonant scattering technique with an efficiency of $82\pm 2\%$ and a bandwidth of about 1 MHz. The high conversion efficiency is maintained for microwave photons range from thousands to about 50, suggesting that our transduction is readily applicable to the single-photon level. Without requiring cavities or aggressive cooling to quantum ground states, our results would push atomic transducers closer to practical applications in quantum technologies., Comment: Nature Photonics(2022)

We propose a general quantum circuit based on the swap test for measuring the quantity $\langle \psi_1 | A | \psi_2 \rangle$ of an arbitrary operator $A$ with respect to two quantum states $|\psi_{1,2}\rangle$. This quantity is frequently encountered in many fields of physics, and we dub it the generalized expectation as a two-state generalization of the conventional expectation. We apply the circuit, in the field of non-Hermitian physics, to the measurement of generalized expectations with respect to left and right eigenstates of a given non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. To efficiently prepare the left and right eigenstates as the input to the general circuit, we also develop a quantum circuit via effectively rotating the Hamiltonian pair $(H,-H^\dagger)$ in the complex plane. As applications, we demonstrate the validity of these circuits in the prototypical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with nonreciprocal hopping by measuring the Bloch and non-Bloch spin textures and the corresponding winding numbers under periodic and open boundary conditions (PBCs and OBCs), respectively. The numerical simulation shows that non-Hermitian spin textures building up these winding numbers can be well captured with high fidelity, and the distinct topological phase transitions between PBCs and OBCs are clearly characterized. We may expect that other non-Hermitian topological invariants composed of non-Hermitian spin textures, such as non-Hermitian Chern numbers, and even significant generalized expectations in other branches of physics would also be measured by our general circuit, providing a different perspective to study novel properties in non-Hermitian as well as other physics realized in qubit systems., Comment: 6+3 pages, 4+1 figures, published version

The topological Anderson and Mott insulators are two phases that have so far been separately and widely explored beyond topological band insulators. Here we combine the two seemingly different topological phases into a system of spin-1/2 interacting fermionic atoms in a disordered optical lattice. We find that the topological Anderson and Mott insulators in the noninteracting and clean limits can be adiabatically connected without gap closing in the phase diagram of our model. Lying between the two phases, we uncover a disordered correlated topological insulator, which is induced from a trivial band insulator by the combination of disorder and interaction, as the generalization of topological Anderson insulators to the many-body interacting regime. The phase diagram is determined by computing various topological properties and confirmed by unsupervised and automated machine learning. We develop an approach to provide a unified and clear description of topological phase transitions driven by interaction and disorder. We propose an ultracold-atom setting where a fermionic superfluidity with attractive s-wave interaction is uploaded in a non-Hermitian Lieb optical lattice. The existence of a real-energy flat band solution is revealed. We show that the interplay between the skin effect and flat-band localization leads to exotic localization properties. We develop a multiband mean-field description of this system and use both order parameters and superfluid weight to describe the phase transition. A relation between the superfluid weight and non-Hermitian quantum metric of the quantum states manifold is built. We find non-monotone criticality depending on the non-Hermiticity, and the non-reciprocity prominently enhances the phase coherence of the pairing field, suggesting ubiquitous critical behavior of the non-Hermitian fermionic superfluidity., 10 pages, 4 figures

Nonlinearities in lattices with topologically nontrivial band structures can give rise to topological solitons, whose properties differ from both conventional lattice solitons and linear topological boundary states. We show that a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-type lattice with both nonlinearity and nonreciprocal non-Hermiticity hosts a novel oscillatory soliton, which we call a topological end breather. The end breather is strongly localized to a self-induced topological domain near the end of the lattice, in sharp contrast to the extended topological solitons previously found in one-dimensional lattices. Its stable oscillatory dynamics can be interpreted as a Rabi oscillation between two self-induced topological boundary states, emerging from a combination of chiral lattice symmetry and the non-Hermitian skin effect. We propose a scheme for converting a microwave (mw) single photon in a mw cavity to a flying optical photon. The conversion is realized by using a flying circular Rydberg atom, which plays a role of the “data bus” as an excellent memory to connect the mw and optical cavities. To link the energy levels of atom in optical domain and mw domain, we use fast decircularization method and three-photon Raman transition method. Thank to these low loss processes and the super long lifetime of circular Rydberg states, this scheme can efficiently convert single mw photons into the optical domain. Based on existing experiments and data, the conversion efficiency is simulated as 60%. The theoretical limit of the conversion efficiency is about 87%.

Direct weak or strong measurement of quantum wave function based on post-selections has been widely explored; however, the efficiency of the measurement is heavily limited by the success probability of post-selection. Here we propose a modified scheme to directly measure photon–s wave function by simply inserting a liquid crystal plate before the post-selection stage. Numerical simulations demonstrate that our modified method can significantly increase the efficiency of post selection. Our proposal would speed up the quantum wave function measurement with high resolution and high fidelity.

Among non-Hermitian systems, pseudo-Hermitian phases represent a special class of physical models characterized by real energy spectra and by the absence of non-Hermitian skin effects. Here, we show that several pseudo-Hermitian phases in two and three dimensions can be built by employing $q$-deformed matrices, which are related to the representation of deformed algebras. Through this algebraic approach we present and study the pseudo-Hermitian version of well known Hermitian topological phases, raging from two-dimensional Chern insulators and time-reversal-invariant topological insulators to three-dimensional Weyl semimetals and chiral topological insulators. We analyze their topological bulk states through non-Hermitian generalizations of Abelian and non-Abelian tensor Berry connections and quantum metric. Although our pseudo-Hermitian models and their Hermitian counterparts share the same topological invariants, their band geometries are different. We indeed show that some of our pseudo-Hermitian phases naturally support nearly-flat topological bands, opening the route to the study of pseudo-Hermitian strongly-interacting systems. The topology of quantum systems has become a topic of great interest since the discovery of topological insulators. However, as a hallmark of the topological insulators, the spin Chern number has not yet been experimentally detected. The challenge to directly measure this topological invariant lies in the fact that this spin Chern number is defined based on artificially constructed wavefunctions. Here we experimentally mimic the celebrated Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model with cold atoms, and then measure the spin Chern number with the linear response theory. We observe that, although the Chern number for each spin component is ill defined, the spin Chern number measured by their difference is still well defined when both energy and spin gaps are non-vanished., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Nuclear physics, whose underling theory is described by quantum gauge field coupled with matter, is fundamentally important and yet is formidably challenge for simulation with classical computers. Quantum computing provides a perhaps transformative approach for studying and understanding nuclear physics. With rapid scaling-up of quantum processors as well as advances on quantum algorithms, the digital quantum simulation approach for simulating quantum gauge fields and nuclear physics has gained lots of attentions. In this review, we aim to summarize recent efforts on solving nuclear physics with quantum computers. We first discuss a formulation of nuclear physics in the language of quantum computing. In particular, we review how quantum gauge fields~(both Abelian and non-Abelian) and its coupling to matter field can be mapped and studied on a quantum computer. We then introduce related quantum algorithms for solving static properties and real-time evolution for quantum systems, and show their applications for a broad range of problems in nuclear physics, including simulation of lattice gauge field, solving nucleon and nuclear structure, quantum advantage for simulating scattering in quantum field theory, non-equilibrium dynamics, and so on. Many-body localization (MBL) has been widely investigated for both fermions and bosons, it is, however, much less explored for anyons. Here we numerically calculate several physical characteristics related to MBL of a one-dimensional disordered anyon-Hubbard model in both localized and delocalized regions. We figure out a logarithmically slow growth of the half-chain entanglement entropy and an area-law rather than volume-law obedience for the highly excited eigenstates in the MBL phase. The adjacent energy level gap-ratio parameter is calculated and is found to exhibit a Poisson-like probability distribution in the deep MBL phase. By studying a hybridization parameter, we reveal an intriguing effect that the statistics can induce localization-delocalization transition. Several physical quantities, such as the half-chain entanglement, the adjacent energy level gap-ratio parameter, {\color{black} the long-time limit of the particle imbalance}, and the critical disorder strength, are shown to be non-monotonically dependent on the anyon statistical angle. We explore the topological properties of non-Hermitian nodal-link semimetals with dissipative cold atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice. We construct a two-band continuum model in three dimensions with a spin-dependent gain and loss, where the exceptional points in the energy spectrum can comprise a double Hopf link. The topology of the bulk band is characterized by a winding number defined for a one-dimensional loop in the momentum space and a topological transition of the nodal structures emerges as the change of the non-Hermiticity strength. A non-Bloch theory is built to describe the corresponding lattice model which has anomalous bulk-boundary correspondence. Furthermore, we propose that the model can be realized using ultracold fermionic atoms in an optical lattice and the exceptional nodal links as well as the topological properties can be detected by measuring the atomic spin textures., 12 pages, 9 figures

Simulation of a quantum many-body system at finite temperatures is crucially important but quite challenging. Here we present an experimentally feasible quantum algorithm assisted with continuous-variable for simulating quantum systems at finite temperatures. Our algorithm has a time complexity scaling polynomially with the inverse temperature and the desired accuracy. We demonstrate the quantum algorithm by simulating finite temperature phase diagram of the Kitaev model. It is found that the important crossover phase diagram of the Kitaev ring can be accurately simulated by a quantum computer with only a few qubits and thus the algorithm may be readily implemented on current quantum processors. Non-Hermitian systems can exhibit unique topological and localization properties. Here we elucidate the non-Hermitian effects on disordered topological systems by studying a non-Hermitian disordered Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with nonreciprocal hoppings. We show that the non-Hermiticity can enhance the topological phase against disorders by increasing energy gaps. Moreover, we uncover a topological phase which emerges only under both moderate non-Hermiticity and disorders, and is characterized by localized insulating bulk states with a disorder-averaged winding number and zero-energy edge modes. Such topological phases induced by the combination of non-Hermiticity and disorders are dubbed non-Hermitian topological Anderson insulators. We also find that the system has non-monotonous localization behaviour and the topological transition is accompanied by an Anderson transition. A quantum memory, for storing and retrieving flying photonic quantum states, is a key interface for realizing long-distance quantum communication and large-scale quantum computation. While many experimental schemes of high storage-retrieval efficiency have been performed with weak coherent light pulses, all quantum memories for true single photons achieved so far have efficiencies far below 50%, a threshold value for practical applications. Here, we report the demonstration of a quantum memory for single-photon polarization qubits with an efficiency of >85% and a fidelity of >99 %, basing on balanced two-channel electromagnetically induced transparency in laser-cooled rubidium atoms. For the single-channel quantum memory, the optimized efficiency for storing and retrieving single-photon temporal waveforms can be as high as 90.6 %. Non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems are a fascinating subject to be explored. Using the generalized density matrix renormalisation group method and complementary exact diagonalization, we elucidate the many-body ground states and dynamics of a 1D interacting non-Hermitian Aubry-Andre-Harper model for bosons. We find stable ground states in the superfluid and Mott insulating regimes under wide range of conditions in this model. We reveal a skin superfluid state induced by the non-Hermiticity from the nonreciprocal hopping. We investigate the topology of the Mott insulating phase and find its independence of the non-Hermiticity. The topological Mott insulators in this non-Hermitian system are characterized by four equal Chern numbers and a quantized shift of biorthogonal many-body polarizations. The authors present theoretical results on the dynamical properties of General Majorana Quasiparticles and the unique Majorana Zitterbewegung. The results reveal the fidelity is a good observable to distinguish Majorana from Dirac or Weyl dynamics. Furthermore, a feasible method to detect the Majorana dynamics by using quench and quantum-state tomography has been provided in cold-atomic lattice system.

The atom-based traceable standard for microwave electrometry shows promising advantages by enabling stable and uniform measurement. Here we theoretically propose and then experimentally realize an alternative direct International System of Units (SI)--traceable and self-calibrated method for measuring a microwave-electric-field strength based on electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in cold Rydberg atoms. Comparing with the method of electromagnetically induced transparency, we show that the equivalence relation between the microwave Rabi frequency and Autler-Townes splitting is more valid and is even more robust against the experimental parameters in the EIA's linear region. Furthermore, a narrower linewidth of cold Rydberg EIA enables us to realize a direct SI-traceable microwave-electric-field measurement as small as $\ensuremath{\sim}100\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{V}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$.

This is an introductory review of the physics of topological quantum matter with cold atoms. Topological quantum phases, originally discovered and investigated in condensed matter physics, have recently been explored in a range of different systems, which produced both fascinating physics findings and exciting opportunities for applications. Among the physical systems that have been considered to realize and probe these intriguing phases, ultracold atoms become promising platforms due to their high flexibility and controllability. Quantum simulation of topological phases with cold atomic gases is a rapidly evolving field, and recent theoretical and experimental developments reveal that some toy models originally proposed in condensed matter physics have been realized with this artificial quantum system. The purpose of this article is to introduce these developments. The article begins with a tutorial review of topological invariants and the methods to control parameters in the Hamiltonians of neutral atoms. Next, topological quantum phases in optical lattices are introduced in some detail, especially several celebrated models, such as the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, the Hofstadter-Harper model, the Haldane model and the Kane-Mele model. The theoretical proposals and experimental implementations of these models are discussed. Notably, many of these models cannot be directly realized in conventional solid-state experiments. The newly developed methods for probing the intrinsic properties of the topological phases in cold atom systems are also reviewed. Time synchronization and phase shaping of single photons both play fundamental roles in quantum information applications that rely on multi-photon quantum interference. Phase shaping typically requires separate modulators with extra insertion losses. Here, we develop a all-optical built-in phase modulator for single photons using a quantum memory. The fast phase modulation of a single photon in both step and linear manner are verified by observing the efficient quantum-memory-assisted Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between two single photons, where the anti-coalescence effect of bosonic photon pairs is demonstrated. We report the direct characterization of energy-time entanglement of narrowband biphotons produced from spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atoms. The Stokes and anti-Stokes two-photon temporal correlation is measured by single-photon counters with nano second temporal resolution, and their joint spectrum is determined by using a narrow linewidth optical cavity. The energy-time entanglement is verified by the joint frequency-time uncertainty product of 0.063 +/- 0.0044, which does not only violate the separability criterion but also satisfies the continuous variable Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering inequality., 5 pages, 3 figures

The measurement of a quantum state wave function not only acts as a fundamental part in quantum physics but also plays an important role in developing practical quantum technologies. Conventional quantum state tomography has been widely used to estimate quantum wave functions, which usually requires complicated measurement techniques. The recent weak-value-based quantum measurement circumvents this resource issue but relies on an extra pointer space. Here, we theoretically propose and then experimentally demonstrate a direct and efficient measurement strategy based on a δ-quench probe: by quenching its complex probability amplitude one by one (δ quench) in the given basis, we can directly obtain the quantum wave function of a pure ensemble by projecting the quenched state onto a postselection state. We confirm its power by experimentally measuring photonic complex temporal wave functions. This new method is versatile and can find applications in quantum information science and engineering.

Dipolar parity anomaly can be induced by spatiotemporally weak-dependent energy-momentum separation of paired Dirac points in two-dimensional Dirac semimetals. Here we reveal topological currents arising from this kind of anomaly. A corresponding lattice model is proposed to emulate the topological currents by using two-component ultracold atoms in a two-dimensional optical Raman lattice. In our scheme, the topological currents can be generated by varying on-site coupling between the two atomic components in time and tuned via the laser fields. Berry curvature is an imaginary component of the quantum geometric tensor (QGT) and is well studied in many branches of modern physics; however, the quantum metric as a real component of the QGT is less explored. Here, by using tunable superconducting circuits, we experimentally demonstrate two methods to directly measure the quantum metric tensor for characterizing the geometry and topology of underlying quantum states in parameter space. The first method is to probe the transition probability after a sudden quench, and the second one is to detect the excitation rate under weak periodic driving. Furthermore, based on quantum-metric and Berry-curvature measurements, we explore a topological phase transition in a simulated time-reversal-symmetric system, which is characterized by the Euler characteristic number instead of the Chern number. Non-Hermiticity from non-reciprocal hoppings has been shown recently to demonstrate the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) under open boundary conditions (OBCs). Here we study the interplay of this effect and the Anderson localization in a \textit{non-reciprocal} quasiperiodic lattice, dubbed non-reciprocal Aubry-Andr\'{e} model, and a \textit{rescaled} transition point is exactly proved. The non-reciprocity can induce not only the NHSE, but also the asymmetry in localized states with two Lyapunov exponents for both sides. Meanwhile, this transition is also topological, characterized by a winding number associated with the complex eigenenergies under periodic boundary conditions (PBCs), establishing a \textit{bulk-bulk} correspondence. This interplay can be realized by an elaborately designed electronic circuit with only linear passive RLC devices instead of elusive non-reciprocal ones, where the transport of a continuous wave undergoes a transition between insulating and amplifying. We propose a protocol using a tunable Xmon qubit chain to construct generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) models that support various topological phases. We study the time evolution of a single-excitation quantum state in a SSH-type qubit chain and find that such dynamics is linked to topological winding number. We also investigate the adiabatic transfer of a single-excitation quantum state in a generalized SSH-type qubit chain and show that this process can be connected with topological Chern number and be used to generate a novel entanglement-dependent topological pumping. All results have been demonstrated to be robust against qubit coupling imperfections and can be observed in a short Xmon qubit chain. We study the topological properties of an extended Bose-Hubbard model with cyclically modulated hopping and on-site potential parameters, which can be realized with ultracold bosonic atoms in a one-dimensional optical superlattice. We show that the interacting bosonic chain at half filling and in the deep Mott insulating regime can simulate bosonic Chern insulators with a topological phase diagram similar to that of the Haldane model of noninteracting fermions. Furthermore, we explore the topological properties of the ground state by calculating the many-body Chern number, the quasiparticle energy spectrum with gapless edge modes, the topological pumping of the interacting bosons, and the topological phase transition from normal (trivial) to topological Mott insulators. We also present the global phase diagram of the many-body ground state, which contains a superfluid phase and two Mott insulating phases with trivial (a zero Chern number) and nontrivial topologies (a nonzero Chern number), respectively., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Nonparametric learning is able to make reliable predictions by extracting information from similarities between a new set of input data and all samples. Here we point out a quantum paradigm of nonparametric learning which offers an exponential speedup over the sample size. By encoding data into quantum feature space, similarity between the data is defined as an inner product of quantum states. A quantum training state is introduced to superpose all data of samples, encoding relevant information for learning in its bipartite entanglement spectrum. We demonstrate that a trained state for prediction can be obtained by entanglement spectrum transformation, using quantum matrix toolbox. We further work out a feasible protocol to implement the quantum nonparametric learning with trapped ions, and demonstrate the power of quantum superposition for machine learning., Comment: 5 pages. We present a scheme that allows integration of the Berry curvature and thus determination of the Chern number of a qubit eigenstate manifold. Our proposal continuously couples the qubit with a meter system while it explores a quasi-adiabatic path in the manifold. The accumulated change of one of the meter observables then provides an estimate of the Chern number. By varying the initial state of the meter, we explore the delicate interplay between the measurement precision and the disturbance of the qubit. A simple argument yields a correction factor that allows estimation of the Chern number, even when the qubit is significantly disturbed during the probing. The Chern number arises from the geometric phase accumulated during the exploration, while we observe the dynamic phase to produce a broadening of the meter wave function. We show that a protocol, relying on three subsequent explorations, allows cancellation of the dynamic phase while the geometric phase is retained., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Although Weyl semimetals have been extensively studied for exploring rich topological physics, the direct observation of the celebrated chiral magnetic effect (CME) associated with the so-called dipolar chiral anomaly has long intrigued and challenged physicists, still remaining elusive in nature. Here we propose a feasible scheme for experimental implementation of ultracold atoms that may enable us to probe the CME with a pure topological current in an artificial Weyl semimetal. The paired Weyl points with the dipolar chiral anomaly emerge in the presence of the well-designed spin-orbital coupling and laser-assisted tunneling. Both of the two artificial fields are readily realizable and highly tunable via current optical techniques using ultracold atoms trapped in three-dimensional optical lattices, providing a reliable way for manipulating Weyl points in the momentum-energy space. By applying a weak artificial magnetic field, the system processes an auxiliary current originated from the topology of a paired Weyl points, namely, the pure CME current. This topological current can be extracted from measuring the center-of-mass motion of ultracold atoms, which may pave the way to directly and unambiguously observe the CME in experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

We propose an experimental scheme to simulate and observe the Klein tunneling of relativistic Maxwell particles with trapped ions. We explore the scattering dynamics of the pseudospin-one Maxwell particles and demonstrate that the scattered state should be a superposition of a reflection state, a localization state, and a transmission state. The probabilities of these states can be analytically obtained by the approach of Landau-Zener transition. We further show that the Maxwell Hamiltonian and the associated scattering dynamics can be mimicked with two trapped ions. The Maxwell spinors are encoded by three internal states of the first ion, the position and momentum are described by those of the motional modes, and the desired linear potential barrier is built by the second ion., 6 pages, 4 figures

Topology manifesting in many branches of physics deepens our understanding on state of matters. Topological photonics has recently become a rapidly growing field since artificial photonic structures can be well designed and constructed to support topological states, especially a promising large-scale implementation of these states using photonic chips. Meanwhile, due to the inapplicability of Hall conductance to photons, it is still an elusive problem to directly measure the integer topological invariants and topological phase transitions in photonic system. Here, we present a direct observation of topological winding numbers by using bulk-state photon dynamics on a chip. Furthermore, we for the first time experimentally observe the topological phase transition points via single-photon dynamics. The integrated topological structures, direct measurement in the single-photon regime and strong robustness against disorder add the key elements into the toolbox of "quantum topological photonics" and may enable topologically protected quantum information processing in large scale.

A Bose–Einstein condensate with a large atom number is an important experimental platform for quantum simulation and quantum information research. An optical dipole trap is the a conventional way to hold the ultracold atoms, where an atomic cloud is evaporatively cooled down before reaching the Bose–Einstein condensate. A carefully designed trap depth controlling curve is typically required to realize the optimal evaporation cooling. We present and demonstrate a simple way to optimize the evaporation cooling in a crossed optical dipole trap. A polyline shape optical power control profile is easily obtained with our method, by which a pure Bose–Einstein condensate with atom number 1.73 × 105 is produced. Theoretically, we numerically simulate the optimal evaporation cooling using the parameters of our apparatus based on a kinetic theory. Compared to the simulation results, our evaporation cooling shows a good performance. We believe that our simple method can be used to quickly realize evaporation cooling in optical dipole traps.

Robust quantum state transfer (QST) is an indispensable ingredient in scalable quantum information processing. Here we present an experimentally feasible mechanism for realizing robust QST via topologically protected edge states in superconducting qubit chains. Using superconducting Xmon qubits with tunable couplings, we construct generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models and analytically derive the wave functions of topological edge states. We find that such edge states can be employed as a quantum channel to realize robust QST between remote qubits. With a numerical simulation, we show that both single-qubit states and two-qubit entangled states can be robustly transferred in the presence of sizable imperfections in the qubit couplings. The transfer fidelity demonstrates a wide plateau at the value of unity in the imperfection magnitude.
