The effects of biochars on aquatic vegetables and soil/water environments.

Hydrochars produced via hydrothermal carbonization of rice husk were post-treated using three different acids and two bases. The post-treated hydrochars were characterized using different methods and evaluated for adsorption of dyes and antibiotics from aqueous solutions. The post-treated hydrochars had carbon and oxygen contents in the range of 37.4% to 44.7% and 29.9% to 38.6%, respectively, and their surfaces were rich in oxygen-containing functional groups and negative surface charges. Post-treatment remarkably influenced the physico-chemical properties of the hydrochars’ surfaces. All post-treated hydrochars could adsorb the model organics from aqueous solutions with the highest adsorption amount of 327, 353, 336, and 309 mg/g for Congo red, berberine hydrochloride, tetracycline, and acridine orange, respectively, at 0.3 mg/mL and 25 °C. The combined effects of functional groups, surface area, and negative surface charge of the hydrochars could assist in the adsorption of organics. The Langmuir-isotherm model provided a good fit for the adsorption of acridine orange, tetracycline, and berberine hydrochloride on the selected hydrochars, while the adsorption of Congo red generated linear isotherms indicating a partition-involved mechanism. The adsorption of the organics onto the hydrochars is a spontaneous and mainly physical adsorption process with a quite fast adsorption rate.

Hydrochar a carbon-rich material resulting from hydrothermal carbonization of biomass, has received substantial attention because of its potential application in various areas such as carbon sequestration, bioenergy production and environmental amelioration. A series of hydrochars were prepared by metal chloride-assisted hydrothermal carbonization of rice husk and characterized by elemental analysis, zeta potential, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results reveal that the prepared hydrochars have carbon contents ranging from 45.01 to 58.71%, BET specific areas between 13.23 and 45.97 m2/g, and rich O-containing functional groups on the surfaces. The metal chlorides added in the feedwater could improve the degree of carbonization and show significant effects on the physical, chemical and adsorption properties of the hydrochars. The adsorption of the selected organics on the hydrochars is a spontaneous and physisorption-dominated process. The hydrochars possess larger adsorption capacities for 2-naphthol than for berberine hydrochloride and Congo red, and the modeling maximum adsorption capacities of 2-naphthol are in the range of 170.1–2680 mg/g. The adsorption equilibrium could be accomplished in 10, 40 and 30 min for 2-naphthol, berberine hydrochloride and Congo red, respectively. These results suggest metal chloride-assisted hydrothermal carbonization a promising method for converting biomass waste into effective adsorbents for wastewater treatment.

The development of easily recyclable non-noble metal plasmonic photocatalysts with high performance is highly desired for the removal of Cr(VI). Herein, the in-situ growth of plasmonic-bismuth (Bi) combined with magnetic ferroferric (Fe3O4) nanoparticles on biochar (BC) was realized by a facile high temperature calcination. BC/Bi/Fe3O4 exhibits broad photoabsorption from 200 to 2000 nm. The weaker photoluminescence (PL) spectrum or stronger photocurrent density confirmed its higher separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers than that of BC or Bi/Fe3O4. Under visible light irradiation, BC/Bi/Fe3O4 exhibits excellent adsorption-photocatalytic performance for Cr(VI) (95%) in 180 min. With BC/Bi/Fe3O4 as a working electrode, the higher removal efficiency (97%) was achieved than that using BC/Bi (65%), BC/Fe3O4 (79%) or Bi/Fe3O4 (66%) after 160 min under visible light irradiation, rooting from wide spectral absorption and efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. BC/Bi/Fe3O4 can be easily recycled by magnetism with good stability. This work not only provides ideas for the preparation of surface plasma resonance (SPR) semiconductor photocatalyst for removing heavy metal, but also realizes the resource utilization of agricultural and forestry waste.

Nanoplastics (NPs) pollution has become an emerging threat to the aquatic environment and its organisms. The removal of NPs from contaminated water is a global challenge. In this study, an efficient and reusable composite was prepared from cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) modified magnetic biochar. The performances of CTAB modified magnetic biochar (CMB) to remove polystyrene (PS) and carboxylate-modified polystyrene (CPS) nanoparticles from water were systematically evaluated. The results showed that the PS and CPS removal performance of magnetic biochar was improved by CTAB modification. These increases were assigned to the increase in the surface hydrophobicity of CMB. Due to the strong electrostatic repulsion between the nanoparticles, PS and CPS maintained high stability in alkaline conditions, resulting in a significant decrease in removal efficiency. Little attention has been paid to the combined effects of arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) fungus and composted manure on heavy metal bioavailability and its uptake by plants grown in heavy metal-contaminated soils from electronic-waste (e-waste) recycling sites. A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of AM fungus, composted pig manure (CM) and AM fungus + CM (ACM) on the growth of ryegrass and uptake of Cd and Zn in the soil collected from an e-waste recycling site. The calcium chloride (CaCl2) and Tessier sequential extraction procedure were adopted to evaluate the bioavailability and chemical speciation of Cd and Zn in the soil. Results showed that the application of CM and ACM significantly increased the pH but decreased the CaCl2-extractable Cd and Zn concentrations in the rhizosphere and bulk soils. ACM treatment significantly shifted Cd from exchangeable fraction to other more stable fractions, and transformed the exchangeable Zn fraction to the carbonate-bound and reducible iron and manganese-bound fractions. Furthermore, the application of ACM can enhance the growth of plant shoots, and decrease the uptake of Cd and Zn in the ryegrass plants. This work suggests that AM fungus in combination with CM amendment may be a potential method for not only remediation of soil Cd and Zn pollution, but also reduction of Cd and Zn uptake by ryegrass grown in the soil from e-waste recycling sites.

In this study, enhancement of anaerobic treatment of azo dye wastewater with Fe3O4/SC is investigated. Fe3O4/sludge carbon (SC) is prepared from waste activated sludge using a simple impregnation method. Two identical laboratory-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors with a working volume of 1.5 L are filled with 2 g/L of SC (reactor 1) and 2 g/L of Fe3O4/SC (reactor 2). Another reactor (reactor 0) is operated as a control. FTIR, XPS, SEM, and BET results indicate that Fe3O4 is successfully loaded on the SC. Addition of Fe3O4/SC to the reactor results in high chemical oxygen demand (78.13%) and color (97.60%) removal rates. Furthermore, Fe3O4/SC effectively decreases the amount of aniline generated and increases CH4 production. The Fe3O4/SC anaerobic system is stable with fast recovery in terms of both organic matter removal and aniline control with high toxic substance concentrations and fluctuating organic loads. Moreover, Fe3O4/SC greatly enhances enzymatic activity and sludge granulation, which could greatly improve anaerobic reactor stability. High electron transport system and conductivity values and the enrichment of Geobacter and Methanosaeta species confirm that direct interspecies electron transfer occurs with Fe3O4/SC in the reactor. These results provide a scientific basis for further applications to azo dye wastewater treatment and promote resource utilization of waste sewage sludge.

Carbonized products of waste agricultural straws used for soil remediation can reduce impact of heavy metals on soil ecology and crop growth. Here, we demonstrated straw fermentation residues to be suitable for preparation of soil remediation agents by pyrolysis. Lignocellulose degradability of filamentous fungi during fermentation was found to significantly enhance properties of biochar for cadmium (Cd (II))-contaminated paddy soil remediation. Obtained biochars were indicated to have rich oxygen-containing groups, thus showing enhanced removal ability of Cd (II). The production of ginseng, an important Chinese medicine crop, has been increasingly challenged by soil degradation and pathogenic disease under continuous cropping in Northeast China. In a field experiment, an Alfisol garden continuously cropped with Chinese ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) was treated with soil amendment at 20 t ha−1 with maize (MB) and wood (WB) biochar, respectively, compared to conventional manure compost (MC). Two years after the amendment, the rooted topsoil and ginseng plants were sampled. The changes in soil fertility and health, particularly in the soil microbial community and root disease incidence, and in ginseng growth and quality were portrayed using soil physico-chemical assays, biochemical assays of extracellular enzyme activities and gene sequencing assays as well as ginsenoside assays. Topsoil fertility was improved by 23% and 39%, ginseng root biomass increased by 25% and 27%, and root quality improved by 6% and 18% with WB and MB, respectively, compared to MC. In the ginseng rhizosphere, fungal abundance increased by 96% and 384%, with a significant and insignificant increase in bacterial abundance, respectively, under WB and MB. Specifically, the abundance of Fusarium spp. was significantly reduced by 19–35%, while that of Burkholderia spp. increased by folds under biochar amendments over MC. Relevantly, there was a significant decrease in the abundance proportion of pathotrophic fungi but a great increase in that of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, along with an enhanced microbial community network complexity, especially fungal community complexity, under biochar amendments. Thus, biochar, particularly from maize residue, could promote ginseng quality production while enhancing soil health and ecological services, including carbon sequestration, in continuously cropped fields.

The migration of extracellular antibiotic resistance genes (eARGs) in porous media is an important pathway for ARGs to spread to the subsoil and aquifer. Biochar (BC) has been widely used to reduce the mobility of soil contaminants, however, its effect on the mobility of eARGs in porous media and the mechanisms are largely unknown. Herein, the effects of BCs synthesized from wheat straw and corn straw at two pyrolysis temperatures (300 °C and 700 °C) on the transport of plasmids-carried eARGs in sand column were investigated. The BC amendments all significantly decreased the mobility of eARGs in the porous medium, but the mechanism varied with pyrolysis temperature. The higher temperature BCs had a stronger irreversible adsorption of plasmids and greatly enhanced the attachment and straining effects on plasmids during transport, thus more effectively inhibited the mobility of eARGs. The lower temperature BCs had weaker adsorption, attachment, and straining effects on plasmids, but induced generation of hydroxyl radicals in the porous medium and thereby fragmented the plasmids and hindered the amplification of eARGs. These findings are of fundamental significance for the potential application of BC in controlling the vertical spread of eARGs in soil and vadose zones.

Co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge and plastics have been utilized for producing biochars as a strategy to fix plastic pollution. However, comparative studies on the characteristics and environmental risk of heavy metals in biochars obtained by the co-pyrolysis of sludge and microplastic with/without metal additives are seldom. Here we demonstrated the effects of simulated co-pyrolysis (at 400 °C) of sewage sludge and metal-free or metal-loaded polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics at different mass ratios (1:0, 19:1, 3:1, 1:3, sewage sludge: PVC (w/w)) respectively. Results revealed that co-pyrolysis of metal-loaded PVC and sewage sludge resulted in higher electrical conductivity, ash content, and an acidic pH of biochars as compared to the co-pyrolysis of metal-free PVC and sewage sludge. Addition of metal-loaded PVC increased total concentrations of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in biochars, but reduced the bioavailability of Cd, chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) in biochars. Analysis of chemical speciation showed that heavy metals (except Pb) in biochars derived from co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge and metal-loaded PVC had higher percentage of more stable fraction (residual fraction) and lower potential ecological risk index (RI) value. S1AP3 (sludge: metal-loaded PVC = 1:3) biochar had the lowest environmental risk based on RI value (14.41). To sum up the present study suggests that the addition of metal-loaded PVC microplastic in sewage sludge had a positive impact on the immobilization of heavy metals during co-pyrolysis process.

Currently, the applications of biochar (BC) in agricultural practices and for environmental remediation purposes have demonstrated multifaceted advantages despite a few limitations. Nano-BC offers considerable opportunities especially for the remediation of hazardous contaminants as well as the improvement of crop productivity. Positive outcomes of nano-BC on soil physico-chemical and biological characteristics have indicated its suitability for agricultural applications. Nano-BC may effectively regulate the mobilization and sorption of important micro- and macro-nutrients, along with the hazardous contaminants including potentially toxic metals, pesticides, etc. Additionally, the sorption characteristics of nano-BC depends substantially on feedstock materials and pyrolysis temperatures. Nevertheless, the conducted investigations regarding nano-BC are in infant stages, requiring extensive field investigations. The nano-enhanced properties of BC on one hand dramatically improve its effectiveness and sustainability, on the other hand, there may be associated with toxicity development in diverse aquatic and/or terrestrial environments. Therefore, risk assessment on soil organisms and its indirect impact on human health is another area of concern linked with the field application of nano-BC. The present review delineates the potentiality of nano-BC as an emerging sorbent for sustainable agriculture and environmental applications.

A microwave aqueous synthesis method has been successfully utilized for preparing mesoporous carbon adsorbents, and the microwave aqueous treatment duration has been decreased from 10 h of hydrothermal treatment to less than 1 h. The mesoporous carbons have Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface areas ranging from 1913.5 to 2213.8 m2/g, pore volumes from 1.41 to 2.40 cm3/g, average pore diameters between 3.29 and 4.40 nm, and the surfaces of the mesoporous carbons are mainly hydrophilic with few O-containing functional groups. The pore textural properties of the mesoporous carbons critically depend on the microwave treatment conditions. All the mesoporous carbons showed considerable adsorption ability for berberine hydrochloride and matrine, and the highest adsorption capacities at the initial concentration of 0.08 mg/mL and 298 K are 363.8 mg/g and 269.7 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption thermodynamic parameters of berberine hydrochloride and matrine on the selected carbon sample were calculated. The adsorption rate of the two alkaloids on the selected carbon sample is fast. These results indicate that the microwave-prepared mesoporous carbons could be promising adsorbents for highly efficient adsorption of berberine hydrochloride and matrine.

Excessive application of phosphorus (P) fertilizer to the agriculture soil can lead to the P loss to the aquatic ecosystem. Three soils from different land use (tea, paddy, and vegetable soils) were treated with biogas slurry (BS) at rate of 79.8 kg ha−1, anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) at rate of 12.5, 25 and 50 kg ha−1, Gypsum (Gy) at rate of 5t ha−1, and the control (Ck) without treatment, to control P losses in a laboratory batch experiment. The soil solution was analyzed for total P (TP), dissolved reactive P (DRP) and total dissolved P (TDP). Particulate P (PP) and dissolved unreactive P (DURP) were calculated by subtracting DRP from TP and TDP, respectively. The DRP was within a range of 68–98% of TP whereas PP varied in a range of 2–32% of TP and DURP was within a range of 0.1–19% of TP, depending on soil types and different treatments. The addition of PAM at a high rate and Gy together on the soil after BS application reduced the release of TP by 54, 46, and 51% and that of DRP by 61, 49, and 53% for tea, paddy and vegetable soils, respectively. However, the application of BS with PAM alone promoted the release of DRP by 77, 86, 70% for tea, paddy, and vegetable soils, respectively. This study suggests that the synergic application of PAM and Gy on soils after BS addition can be a good strategy to reduce P losses.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) is a chemolithotrophic bioprocess which has been widely applied in the treatment of different concentrations of ammonium-containing wastewaters. However, there is less attention on the problem that the instantaneous growth rate (or metabolic rate) and equilibrium growth rate were un-synchronous for anammox bacteria due to their long generation time and self-immobilization of the granular sludge which could lead to the inaccurate estimation. In this study, the anammox process was firstly divided to four typical feast-famine (starvation, satiation, tolerance and poison) states based on the combination of both off-site and in-situ anammox reaction kinetics. Then, four respective lab-scale bioreactors were operated at each state for over a year to achieve stable anammox performance. The results showed that the nitrogen removal rates of bioreactors were 0.53, 2.24, 9.30 and 12.96 kg N/(m³·d); and the specific anammox activities of granular sludge were 188.94 (48%), 313.29 (79%), 397.50 (100%) and 198.60 (50%) mg N/(g VSS·d) which could reflect the reactivity of each feast-famine state. The stable microbial communities of bioreactors were cultured and analyzed, whose species diversity went down with the decrease of Shannon and ACE index. The relative abundance of anammox bacteria increased from 11% to 57% from starvation to poison state. Candidatus Brocadia/Nitrospira, Candidatus Kuenenia and Brocadiaceae unclassified were revealed to be the distinctive functional bacteria, which could serve as the indicator of each state. The setting up of the typical feast-famine states could be regarded as the landmark to help the design, control and optimization of anammox process. In this study, an internal circulation-anoxic/aerobic (IC-A/O) process followed by ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) system was applied for paper wastewater reclamation. The IC-AO system presented a stable and efficient performance, achieving high removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) with methane production rate of 132.8 mL/d. Acute toxicity to Daphnia magna (D. magna) was reduced significantly (83.2%) and the spearman's rank correlation analysis indicated that the toxicity of effluents from each reactor were positively correlated with COD and TOC. Hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid and benzophenone were the main toxic contributors for biological effluent. Microbial community revealed that Anaerolinea was significantly related with organic pollutants. The UF-RO system further removed pollutants and toxicity with the final effluent COD, TOC, ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) and TN of 32.6, 18.8, 0.3 and 9.2 mg/L, respectively, which proved that it was feasible for paper wastewater reuse. This study presented an efficient, practical and environmentally competitive system, and paved a foundation for the treatment and reuse of paper wastewater.

The reuse of water in agriculture has become more common in water management worldwide. However, there is very limited information about nutrient retention in water reclamation management. In this study, an improved low impact development (LID) practice was constructed to investigate the synergistic effects of three substrates amendment on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) retention under two irrigation modules: spray and drip irrigation. The orthogonal combination of the three substrates was controlled during four leaching events, with polyacrylamide (PAM), peat soil, and straw biochar application rates of 1, 2, and 4 g kg−1; 5, 10, and 20 g kg−1; and 10, 20, and 40 g kg−1, respectively. Results showed that the optimum treatments for N and P were 2 g kg−1 of PAM; 2 g kg−1 of PAM, 10 g kg−1 of peat soil, and 40 g kg−1 of straw biochar, respectively. The highest amounts of N and P retention under spray and drip irrigation were 83.12 mg N kg−1 and 50.09 mg N·kg−1, and 11.88 mg P·kg−1 and 7.47 mg P·kg−1, respectively. The analysis of variance indicated that PAM, biochar, and peat soil affected the retention of leachate, N, and P differently. PAM application could not only improve the water, N, P retention capacity of soil, but also significantly increase the content of ＞2 mm water-stable soil aggregate (WSA) (p＜0.05), and there is an advisable linear relation between N, P retention and the content of ＞2 mm WSA (R2 = 0.79, 0.67, respectively). Overall, this study concludes that a combined application of PAM and biochar could reduce P loss and increase the ＞2 mm WSA under leaching condition.

Different natural and anthropogenic global events and activities such as urban settlements and industrial development have led to a build-up of numerous pollutants in the environment, creating problems for nature and human health. Among the pollutants, metal(loid)s are persistent and ubiquitously present in the soil, water, and air. The presence of high concentrations of metal(loid)s in water is of serious concern, as water is a basic necessity of humans and plants. Through irrigation, metal(loid)s enter and accumulate in plants, and subsequently reach humans via food. There is demand for sustainable and practical technologies for tackling the challenge of metal(loid) pollution. Nanotechnology has found its place in diverse fields including cosmetics, sensors, remediation, and medicine. Nanoremediation is an effective, feasible, and sustainable technology for cleaning up water contaminated with metal(loid)s and other chemicals. The versatility of nanomaterials is huge due to their differences in size, shape, surface chemistry, and chemical composition. This review sheds light on different nanoparticles (NPs) used for water remediation and summarizes key recent findings. The successful application of NPs in laboratory studies warrants their potential use in water clean-up from a small to a large scale.

Animal-manure biochar used as a sustainable amendment to garden soil has been widely applied, and the animal-manure pyrolysis temperatures would also have a regulatory effect on soil functions because of their affections on biochar physio-chemical properties. Here we studied the effects of different dosages of swine-manure biochar on tea garden soil functions, with the swine-manure pyrolysis temperature differed at 350 and 500°C. The results showed that the improvement of soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen and enzyme activities was closely related to the addition of 0.5–2% (biochar wt/soil wt) swine-manure biochar. Under different conditions of different carbon application rates and carbon type, the addition of 2% swine-manure biochar pyrolyzed at 350°C showed the best effects on soil enzyme activities and microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen contents. Compared to the control, after the addition of 2% swine-manure biochar, sucrase, phosphatase, catalase, and urease activities increased by 63.3, 23.2, 50.3, and 27.9%, respectively. Microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen contents also increased by 36.4 and 34.3%, respectively. Our study indicated that the effectiveness of using animal-manure swine-manure biochar as a sustainable amendment to soil would provide evidence of tea garden soil improvement and the environmental response to the usage of biochars.

Recoverable magnetic biochar has great potential for treating wastewater contaminants such as Pb(II). However, whether magnetic modification could enhance metal adsorption efficiency is currently contradictory in the literature mainly due to the differences in selecting various magnetic functionalization conditions. Considering this gap in knowledge, the effects of magnetic functionalization method (impregnation and precipitation), concentration of precursor iron solution (0.01–1 M), and pyrolysis temperature (300–700 °C) on the characteristics and Pb(II) adsorption capacity of biochar were systematically investigated in this paper. Results indicated that Fe3O4 was the main product for magnetic biochars synthesized using the impregnation (denoted as FWFe(3)) and precipitation methods (denoted as FWFe(2)). Magnetic functionalization resulted in remarkably increased pH and more negative zeta potential for FWFe(2) samples, whereas FWFe(3) samples showed the opposite trends. The adsorption of Pb(II) on different biochars fitted the pseudo-second order model and the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity was 817.64 mg/g for FWFe(2)1M700C (precipitation by 1 M of Fe(II)/Fe(III), pyrolysis at 700 °C), outperforming FWFe(3) and pristine biochar samples by around 5–13 times. Mechanism study indicated that the adsorption mainly involved electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, co-precipitation, and complexation. Pb(II) adsorption capacity was strongly dependent on the alkali pH of biochar. However, this efficiency was less affected by biochar surface area and its morphology. The higher pH of FWFe(2) samples not only led to an increased surface charge for stronger electrostatic attraction and ion exchange but also favored the formation of co-precipitates. By contrast, FWFe(3) samples showed a decreased adsorption capacity for Pb(II) with increased concentration of embedded iron. Overall, magnetic biochar, prepared using precipitation followed by high-temperature pyrolysis (such as, FWFe(2)1M700C), can be a promising adsorbent for Pb(II) adsorption from wastewater.

Anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) is the core of anaerobic granular sludge bed system. In this study, the effect and its mechanism of stopping substrate supply on function of AnGS were investigated. The cutoff of exogenous substrate supply triggered AnGS to enter the dormant state. Some methanization microorganisms sporulated. The number and activity of methanization microorganisms based on 16S rDNA and 16S rRNA/16S rDNA ratio declined and stayed at 45.5% and 0.06% (bacteria), 48.7% and 0.39% (archaea) of the initial vegetative value, respectively. The resuming of exogenous substrate supply promoted AnGS to restore the vegetative state. The spores disappeared. The specific methanization activity of AnGS returned to the original level of 35.82 mL-CH4/g-VSS·d, but the delay time for gas production (DTGS) was prolonged from 9.54 to 18.04 h (0–132 d). The dormancy of methanization microorganisms was the main cause for the fluctuation of apparent function and the stability of intrinsic function of AnGS under starvation stress. The dormancy stabilized the structure and sustained the methanization community of AnGS via the reduction of EPS (structure binder/energy reserve) consumption.

Biochar, a late-model environmental functional material, has been widely applied in environmental remediation, agricultural production, and energy utilization due to its excellent characteristics such as porosity and high specific surface area. In recent years, many studies on the effects of biochar on agricultural soil and crop quality have been performed. The application of biochar can influence soil microbial status directly or indirectly by changing the physicochemical properties of soil. Apart from increasing soil pH, biochar can also increase soil organic matter and nutrient elements, which ultimately affect crop yield and quality. This review summarizes and overviews the recent research advances on the influence of biochar application on soil microbial community diversity, microbial ecological functions, soil enzymes and their functional genes, and on crop quality and yield from the perspective of soil microorganisms. This review provides guidance and references for further research into biochar applications.

The calcification of Anaerobic Granular Sludge is a serious problem in the application of anaerobic methanization biotechnology. Regular replacement of calcified sludge with exogenous sludge is an effective method, but it is costly and troublesome. A new DOuble Circulation Anaerobic Sludge bed reactor was developed for the enhanced production of endogenous sludge to self-balance the discharge of calcified sludge. The sludge washout rate was demonstrated to fall by 45% and the sludge proliferation rate was shown to rise by 230%, offsetting the regular discharge of calcified sludge. The zoogloea in 100 μm dimension was revealed to be the intermediate component of sludge. The sludge proliferation mode was proposed as follows: (i) Growth of sludge; (ii) Self-cracking of sludge to release fragmental sludge; (iii) Migration of fragmental sludge by self-floatation; (iv) Accumulation of suspended sludge in the sedimentation chamber; (v) Re-granulation of suspended sludge with the aid of Venturi effect.
