2. Building State Vocational Rehabilitation Agency Benefits Planning Capacities. Policy Brief

Abstract

This policy brief describes how State VR agencies are using and can use benefits planning services, as a VR agency-funded service, to help SSDI and SSI beneficiaries address concerns and fears about the potential loss of cash benefits and healthcare benefits (i.e., Medicaid and/or Medicare) as they move into jobs paying substantial wages. The brief highlights a range of definitions for benefits planning services and the scope of services that may be provided through a benefits planner; describes common elements of a quality benefits planning program (including initial training, continuing education, and available technical assistance); provides examples of existing state VR agency models for delivering benefits planning services; and explains why state VR agencies should fund benefits planning services. This policy brief is directed at a primary audience of state VR agency staff-administrators, VR counselors, and other staff. [The Vocational Rehabilitation Youth Technical Assistance Center (Y-TAC) is a project of the Institute for Educational Leadership.]

4. Whatever Will Be Will Be: Queering Disabled Subjects' Temporality

Abstract

Normative time is disciplined through what Freeman calls chrononormativity, and this disciplining is particularly evident in the experiences of disabled children. Despite the constant regimenting of the present reality for disabled children in time, they are essentially denied a future, the future generally being figured without people with disabilities. Exploring Muñoz's critiques of Edelman, we emphasize the importance of futurity for children with disabilities, particularly one which they get to construct themselves rather than being constructed for them. We turn to Foucault's discussion of the Ship of Fools in order to begin to imagine an alternative, queer time that is "steered" by children (and adults) with disabilities towards their own ends and goals. Abstract

A commonly proposed, but naïve approach to solving the debates over curriculum and pedagogy would be to merely go with what the research says "works," but educational debates are not so easily solved. Educational decisions are at the heart value judgements, and to claim that research can tell us what to do represents an ethical and moral "cop-out" to these crucial decisions. The term "evidence," as well, tends to mean randomized, controlled, experimental studies; there are myriad other forms of evidence that we encounter in schools that gets pushed to the side. Ultimately, this white paper concludes, research can only tell us what did work; the only way to know "what works" is to look at what is working for a given teacher in the context of their own classroom.

6. Humanizing Disability in Mathematics Education: Forging New Paths

Abstract

"Humanizing Disability in Mathematics Education: Forging New Paths" is about enhancing the practices of mathematics teachers by extending the concepts of access, equity, and empowerment to include students living with all types of disabilities. These students are rarely thought of as mathematics doers and thinkers, and so are seldom offered opportunities to engage in mathematics in meaningful and connected ways. "Humanizing Disability" examines the current mindset and pedagogy that students with different learning needs encounter, and then offers strategies and practices to humanize the mathematics experience for these students. In the first part of the book, the authors lay out some key ideas about humanizing mathematics education for students with disabilities. As teachers of mathematics of teacher educators and students with disabilities, as well as with their own backgrounds as learners with identified disabilities, the authors' case and perspective are informed by hands-on episodes of their work and their own lived experiences. Foundational to the authors' advocacy are these compelling concepts: (1) Students with disabilities are mathematics doers and thinkers; (2) There are multiple ways of knowing and doing mathematics; (3) The idea that disability is a tragedy must be resisted; (4) Humanizing mathematics education is a matter of human rights to counter conventional, deficit-centered forms of education involving students with disabilities; and (5) Humanizing the mathematics education of students with disabilities enhances the learning of all. Theory and argument isn't practice, so "Humanizing Disability" offers practical examples of implementation through the exploration of singular cases of how an Individual Education Plan (IEP) can be a powerful tool for access, equity, and inclusivity for the disabled learner; of using funds of knowledge and of identity to navigate the education system; and of building inclusive classrooms and communities.

7. Queering, Trans-Forming, and En-Gendering Mathematics and Mathematics Education

Abstract

A group of researchers, graduate students, and classroom teachers convened a working group on "Queering, Trans-forming, and En-gendering Mathematics and Mathematics Education" at the Psychology of Mathematics Education-North America conference in November 2013. Arguing that the "time has come to queer mathematics and mathematics education," they proposed a research agenda that included queering gender, queering the research process queering curriculum, resources, representation, queering pedagogy and teacher education, and queering mathematical concepts and content areas. 8. Erasing Queer Subjects, Constructing Disabled Subjects: Towards a Queering of Mathematics Disabilities

Abstract

This paper explores how the ideology of compulsory able-bodiness functions in special education. The apparatus of special education, this paper contends, applies a bureaucratic gaze to students from historically oppressed groups (e.g. students of color and working class students) and, finding them deficient, interpellates them as disabled. They are compelled by the logic of rehabilitation to submit to interventions designed to make them non-disabled, denied any ability to articulate their own needs and goals, and are denied any kind of collective identity or ability to articulate a confrontational position. Once trapped in this logic of rehabilitation, the paper observes, students "with mathematics disabilities" are denied the opportunity to engage in mathematical problem solving and conversation and instead are relegated to performing rote operations, the very thing that they struggle with. These rote operations are not really prerequisite skills for problem solving, but are often seen as such by special educators. When the students are allowed to participate in problem solving, the paper argues, they are basically given the methods and answers and don't get to apply their own creativity and reasoning. This paper offers an alternative queer reading of mathematics disability, one that accounts for radical difference. It concludes by offering a vision of a mathematics that takes all students' ideas seriously and of a special education apparatus that accounts for and celebrates radical difference.

9. Conducting Outreach to Transition-Aged Youth: Strategies for Reaching out to Youth with Disabilities, Their Families, and Agencies that Serve Them. Policy and Practice Brief

Abstract

The purpose of this policy and practice brief is to provide readers with a resource for planning outreach to transition-aged youth, their parents, and the service providers who work with them (i.e., the authors' "target group"). The authors will first provide a summary of the laws governing how three key agencies--school districts, state vocational rehabilitation agencies, and the Social Security Administration (SSA)--are expected to deal with this targeted group of young persons with disabilities. They will then summarize some of the special services (or "products") that BPA&O and PABSS programs have to offer youth and those who work with them. Finally, the authors will outline strategies that can be used by the BPA&O and/or PABSS programs to reach a higher percentage of youth, their parents, and the service agencies that work with them. Based on the author's experiences and those of colleagues, some very concrete examples will be used to demonstrate successful outreach approaches. (Contains 21 footnotes.)

10. (Re)Searching Queer Subjects: Approaching a Queer Methodology

Abstract

This paper explores the possibility of fashioning a queer methodology for educational research through analysis of three research studies. It begins with the question of queer visibility, asking about the ethics and utility of remaining closeted vs. disclosing one's identity. It then explores the question of researcher subjectivity and of putting oneself into the research--asking what it means to do embodied research and deconstruct one's positionality. The paper then attempt to reconfigure positivist conceptions of validity and raises some questions about topics that researchers are afraid to address.

Thinking about students in terms of participation instead of "high" or "low" achievers is more than replacing one term with another; it encourages us to shift our focus to student activity as well as barriers to and supports for productive activity. It encourages us to create classroom spaces that draw on student strengths and invite the activity of each student, resulting in an increasingly positive and productive student-centered classroom. Teaching moves can work to equalize status in the classroom and help students see everyone's contribution as essential.

Abstract

The availability of assistive technology (AT) can make a tremendous difference in the ability of an individual to work, even when that individual has a severe disability. In the work context, AT serves several functions: it may make it possible to participate in an education or training program; it may make it possible to get prepared to leave the home for work or training; it may make it possible to travel to and from work; and in some cases, the work itself could not be done without the AT. This article will describe how AT can assist individuals with severe disabilities to overcome barriers to gainful employment. It will also describe several key funding sources available, in all states, to pay for the AT devices and services that will help individuals prepare for, get to, and succeed in employment. Specifically, the authors will discuss the public school special education system, state vocational rehabilitation agencies, Medicaid, Medicare, and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program's Plan for Achieving Self Support. Abstract

Objectives: Primary objectives: To determine the additive value of prostate‐specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in the risk stratification of men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer (PCa) who would have otherwise been deemed suitable for active surveillance (AS). Specifically, we aim to determine if PSMA PET/CT can detect a cohort of men on AS that are in fact high risk and likely to experience unfavourable outcomes should they remain on their current treatment pathway. Secondary objectives: to determine the additive value of PSMA PET/CT to repeat multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) of the prostate and explore whether a confirmatory biopsy may be avoided in men with a negative PSMA PET/CT and a negative repeat mpMRI of the prostate (Prostate Imaging‐Reporting and Data System score of <3). Furthermore, to develop a nomogram combining clinical, imaging and biomarker data to predict the likelihood of failure on AS in men with high‐risk features. Also, a blood sample will be taken to perform a Prostate Health Index test at the time of confirmatory biopsy. Furthermore, a portion of this blood will be stored at a biobank for up to 5 years if a follow‐up study on molecular biomarkers and genetic assays in this cohort of men is indicated, based on the results from the CONFIRM trial. Patients and Methods: The CONFIRM trial is a prospective, multicentre, pre‐test/post‐test, cohort study across Victoria, Australia, involving men with newly diagnosed low‐risk PCa with high‐risk features, considered suitable for AS and undergoing confirmatory biopsy. The trial's goal is to provide high‐quality evidence to establish whether PSMA PET/CT has a role in risk‐stratifying men deemed suitable for AS despite having high‐risk feature(s). Results: The CONFIRM trial will measure the proportion of men deemed unsuitable for ongoing AS based on pathological upgrading and multidisciplinary team recommendation due to PSMA PET/CT scan and PSMA‐targeted confirmatory biopsy. Additionally, the positive and negative predictive values, sensitivity, and specificity of PSMA PET/CT will be calculated in isolation and combined with repeat mpMRI of the prostate. Conclusions: This trial will provide robust prospective data to determine if PSMA‐PET/CT and standard of care (prostate biopsy ± repeat mpMRI) can improve diagnostic certainty in men undergoing confirmatory biopsy for low‐grade PCa with high‐risk features. 28. An Evaluation of the Primary School Teacher Induction Training Program in Belize

Abstract

Scope and Method of Study. The purpose of the evaluation study was to determine the effectiveness of the Belize Primary School Teacher Induction Program through the perceptions of three participant groups; newly qualified teachers, their mentors, and their principals. Evaluation methods were used, including a researcher developed survey. Findings and Conclusions. The findings indicated the induction training program was widely accepted as an effective program by its stakeholders. Teachers reported the program assisted in preparing teachers for classroom teaching. The evaluation identified the mentorship component as one of the weaknesses of the program. By developing a mentorship workshop, mentors will gain the skills and knowledge needed to better support the newly qualified teachers. Abstract

The purpose of this group is to move forward towards collective action within the disabled community. Abstract

"Taking up space as a disabled person is always revolutionary" (Ho, 2020, p. 115). We are mathematics education researchers and practitioners demanding radical changes within and beyond our field to center issues of/with/by the disabled. Our working group draws upon critical theories such as Disability Studies in Education, Critical Race Theory, and DisCrit in order to offer a justice-oriented vision of mathematics education based on conceptualizations of disability and ableism as it relates to other forms of oppression and identities (e.g., race, class, gender, queerness, citizenship, carcerality, material precarity, etc). Traditionally, research on mathematics and disabilities has been conducted within a special education paradigm. Under this paradigm, research often, implicitly or explicitly adopts a deficit and dehumanizing approach which locates the "problem" within the individual student rather than in the social, discursive, political, and structural context of education and other systemic dynamics of racialization (Meghji, 2022) and ableism (Goodley et al., 2019). We resist the continued dehumanization of and harms inflicted on disabled communities. We demand that mathematics education researchers and practitioners address this critical dissonance by taking up equity-oriented approaches to understanding disability and its intersections through Black Feminists and Disability Justice methodologies. Likewise, we call for more resonant harmony frameworks such as Multiple Mathematics Knowledge Bases and Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Practices that honor the voice, agency, and leadership of those most impacted. The purpose of this working group is to build upon our previous working group and to take up and move forward towards solidarity, interdependence, and collective action with the disabled community in our research agenda. Gallbladder involvement in lymphoma is rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature, predominately in the pre positron emission tomography (PET) era. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET/computed tomography (CT) has now become the modality of choice in the staging of lymphoma.
