Abstract

A study of the polarization of Λ hyperons produced in inelastic pN reactions induced by the 450 GeV proton beam from the CERN SPS has been performed with the NA48 detector. The Λ hyperons were detected at a fixed angle of 4.2 mrad in the momentum range from 50 GeV/c to 200 GeV/c. The polarization changes from -0.053 ± 0.034 to -0.298 ± 0.074 for a transverse momentum range of the Λ between 0.28 GeV/c and 0.86 GeV/c. The Λ̄ polarization is consistent with zero.

Abstract

The rate of the decay of the neutral K meson into KL0 → μμγ has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. A total of 59 events has been observed with an estimated background of 14 events. The overall Kaon flux was determined to be 1.2 × 109. This observation corresponds to a branching ratio of (3.4 ± 0.6stat ± 0.4sys) × 10-7. Using this branching ratio the parameter αK* describing the relative strength of the two contributing amplitudes to this decay, through intermediate pseudoscalar or vector-like mesons, was measured to be αK*= -0.04-0.21+0.24. © Springer-Verlag 1997.

Abstract

Pursuing our searches on quinolonecarboxylic acids we used a simple three-step one pot procedure to synthesize novel 1,7-disubstituted-6-nitroquinolones. The new derivatives were tested against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) as well as against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In vitro assays showed some derivatives were endowed with good inhibiting activities against tested mycobacteria. Some derivatives were also found more potent than ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin (used as reference drugs) against gram-positive bacteria.

Abstract

Pursuing our search program for new antitubercular drugs we decided to explore the potentiality of oxazolidinone moiety by synthesizing novel 3-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-2-oxazolidinone analogues of PNU-100480. The new derivatives were tested against atypical mycobacteria as well as against drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis and some of them exhibited a fairly good activity against Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC).

Abstract

In the course of a study on 1H-imidazol-1-amine derivatives as antifungal agents, we found that N-[(1,1'-biphenyl)-4-ylmethyl]-N-[(2,4-dichlorophenyl)methyl]-1H-imidazol-1-amine (1a) exhibited promising activities. In order to explore more in detail the structure-activity relationship of this new class of antifungal agents, we report now the synthesis and the biological activity of new analogues (1b-k) of compound 1a. The synthesis was performed using N-[(1,1'-biphenyl)-4-ylmethyl]-1H-imidazol-1-amine as starting material which was reacted with the proper arylmethyl halide. Most of the newly synthesized imidazolamines exhibited both fungal growth inhibition activity and cellular selectivity.

Abstract

A new series of 3-isopropyl-, 3-trifluoromethyl- and 3-bromomethylquinoxaline-2-ones variously substituted on the benzo-moiety were synthesized and submitted to a preliminary in vitro evaluation for antibacterial, antifungal and anti-HIV activities. Furthermore, all compounds were also tested for cytotoxicity. Results of the screening showed that compound 10 exhibits moderate antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 33 microM), and that 25 and 26 showed interesting cytotoxicity versus mock-infected MT-4 cells. All the other compounds were inactive.

Abstract

The pyrrolo[1,2-f]phenanthridines 8-22 and the corresponding non-rigid analogues 23-41 were synthesised and their ability to inhibit the replication of HIV-1 was tested. Only the polycyclic derivatives 10, 11, and 13 showed a weak anti-HIV activity, whereas several pyrrolo-phenanthridines (8, 10, 16-18) were found to stimulate the multiplication of MT-4 cells at low concentrations. Derivative 10 demonstrated to possess the unique property of stimulating the multiplication of lymphocytes joined to HIV inhibition.

Abstract

A number of new 3-(1-R-3(5)-methyl-4-nitroso-1H-5(3)-pyrazolyl)-5-methylisoxazoles 6a-g (7b-f) were synthesized and tested for antibacterial and antifungal activity. Some of these compounds displayed antifungal activity at non-cytotoxic concentrations. Derivative 6c was 9 times more potent in vitro than miconazole and 20 times more selective against C. neoformans. 6c was also 8- and 125-fold more potent than amphotericin B and fluconazole, respectively. None of the compounds was active against bacteria. Preliminary structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies showed that the NO group at position 4 of the pyrazole ring is essential for the activity. Lipophilicity of the pyrazole moiety, N-alkyl chain length and planarity of the two heterocyclic rings appear to play a decisive role in modulating cytotoxicity and antifungal activity.
