We introduce SimBench, a benchmark designed to evaluate the proficiency of student large language models (S-LLMs) in generating digital twins (DTs) that can be used in simulators for virtual testing. Given a collection of S-LLMs, this benchmark enables the ranking of the S-LLMs based on their ability to produce high-quality DTs. We demonstrate this by comparing over 20 open- and closed-source S-LLMs. Using multi-turn interactions, SimBench employs a rule-based judge LLM (J-LLM) that leverages both predefined rules and human-in-the-loop guidance to assign scores for the DTs generated by the S-LLM, thus providing a consistent and expert-inspired evaluation protocol. The J-LLM is specific to a simulator, and herein the proposed benchmarking approach is demonstrated in conjunction with the Chrono multi-physics simulator. Chrono provided the backdrop used to assess an S-LLM in relation to the latter's ability to create digital twins for multibody dynamics, finite element analysis, vehicle dynamics, robotic dynamics, and sensor simulations. The proposed benchmarking principle is broadly applicable and enables the assessment of an S-LLM's ability to generate digital twins for other simulation packages. We extend to arbitrary measures results of Bao, Erd\"os, Schnelli, Moreillon, and Ji on the connectedness of the supports of additive convolutions of measures on \mathbb{R} and of free multiplicative convolutions of measures on \mathbb{R}_+. More precisely, the convolution of two measures with connected supports also has connected support. The result holds without any absolute continuity or bounded support hypotheses on the measures being convolved. We also show that the results of Moreillon and Schnelli concerning the number of components of the support of a free additive convolution hold for arbitrary measures with bounded supports. Finally, we provide an approach to the corresponding results in the case of free multiplicative convolutions of probability measures on the unit circle., Comment: 20 pages

We are concerned with solvability of a non-potential system involving two relativistic operators, subject to boundary conditions expressed in terms of maximal monotone operators. The approach makes use of a fixed point formulation and relies on a priori estimates and convergent to zero matrices.

Observational data have been actively used to estimate treatment effect, driven by the growing availability of electronic health records (EHRs). However, EHRs typically consist of longitudinal records, often introducing time-dependent confoundings that hinder the unbiased estimation of treatment effect. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) is a widely used propensity score method since it provides unbiased treatment effect estimation and its derivation is straightforward. In this study, we aim to utilize IPTW to estimate treatment effect in the presence of time-dependent confounding using claims records. Previous studies have utilized propensity score methods with features derived from claims records through feature processing, which generally requires domain knowledge and additional resources to extract information to accurately estimate propensity scores. Deep sequence models, particularly recurrent neural networks and self-attention-based architectures, have demonstrated good performance in modeling EHRs for various downstream tasks. We propose that these deep sequence models can provide accurate IPTW estimation of treatment effect by directly estimating the propensity scores from claims records without the need for feature processing. We empirically demonstrate this by conducting comprehensive evaluations using synthetic and semi-synthetic datasets.

This work introduces HistNERo, the first Romanian corpus for Named Entity Recognition (NER) in historical newspapers. The dataset contains 323k tokens of text, covering more than half of the 19th century (i.e., 1817) until the late part of the 20th century (i.e., 1990). Eight native Romanian speakers annotated the dataset with five named entities. The samples belong to one of the following four historical regions of Romania, namely Bessarabia, Moldavia, Transylvania, and Wallachia. We employed this proposed dataset to perform several experiments for NER using Romanian pre-trained language models. Our results show that the best model achieved a strict F1-score of 55.69%. Also, by reducing the discrepancies between regions through a novel domain adaption technique, we improved the performance on this corpus to a strict F1-score of 66.80%, representing an absolute gain of more than 10%., Comment: Accepted at the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR 2024)

We define and study a long-range version of the XX model, arising as the free-fermion point of the XXZ-type Haldane--Shastry (HS) chain. It has a description via non-unitary fermions, based on the free-fermion Temperley--Lieb algebra, and may also be viewed as an alternating $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$ spin chain. Even and odd length behave very differently; we focus on odd length. The model is integrable, and we explicitly identify two commuting hamiltonians. While non-unitary, their spectrum is real by PT-symmetry. One hamiltonian is chiral and quadratic in fermions, while the other is parity-invariant and quartic. Their one-particle spectra have two linear branches, realising a massless relativistic dispersion on the lattice. The appropriate fermionic modes arise from 'quasi-translation' symmetry, which replaces ordinary translation symmetry. Invariance learning algorithms that conditionally filter out domain-specific random variables as distractors, do so based only on the data semantics, and not the target domain under evaluation. We show that a provably optimal and sample-efficient way of learning conditional invariances is by relaxing the invariance criterion to be non-commutatively directed towards the target domain. Under domain asymmetry, i.e., when the target domain contains semantically relevant information absent in the source, the risk of the encoder $\varphi^*$ that is optimal on average across domains is strictly lower-bounded by the risk of the target-specific optimal encoder $\Phi^*_\tau$. We prove that non-commutativity steers the optimization towards $\Phi^*_\tau$ instead of $\varphi^*$, bringing the $\mathcal{H}$-divergence between domains down to zero, leading to a stricter bound on the target risk. Both our theory and experiments demonstrate that non-commutative invariance (NCI) can leverage source domain samples to meet the sample complexity needs of learning $\Phi^*_\tau$, surpassing SOTA invariance learning algorithms for domain adaptation, at times by over $2\%$, approaching the performance of an oracle. We prove tight probabilistic bounds for the shortest vectors in module lattices over number fields using the results of arXiv:2308.15275. Moreover, establishing asymptotic formulae for counts of fixed rank matrices with algebraic integer entries and bounded Euclidean length, we prove an approximate Rogers integral formula for discrete sets of module lattices obtained from lifts of algebraic codes. This in turn implies that the moment estimates of arXiv:2308.15275 as well as the aforementioned bounds on the shortest vector also carry through for large enough discrete sets of module lattices., Comment: 21 pages

Question generation (QG) is a natural language processing task with an abundance of potential benefits and use cases in the educational domain. In order for this potential to be realized, QG systems must be designed and validated with pedagogical needs in mind. However, little research has assessed or designed QG approaches with the input from real teachers or students. This paper applies a large language model-based QG approach where questions are generated with learning goals derived from Bloom's taxonomy. The automatically generated questions are used in multiple experiments designed to assess how teachers use them in practice. The results demonstrate that teachers prefer to write quizzes with automatically generated questions, and that such quizzes have no loss in quality compared to handwritten versions. Further, several metrics indicate that automatically generated questions can even improve the quality of the quizzes created, showing the promise for large scale use of QG in the classroom setting., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the dominant cause of death and hospitalization across the globe. Atherosclerosis, an inflammatory condition that gradually narrows arteries and has potentially fatal effects, is the most frequent cause of CAD. Nonetheless, the circulation regularly adapts in the presence of atherosclerosis, through the formation of collateral arteries, resulting in significant long-term health benefits. Therefore, timely detection of coronary collateral circulation (CCC) is crucial for CAD personalized medicine. We propose a novel deep learning based method to detect CCC in angiographic images. Our method relies on a convolutional backbone to extract spatial features from each frame of an angiography sequence. The features are then concatenated, and subsequently processed by another convolutional layer that processes embeddings temporally. Due to scarcity of data, we also experiment with pretraining the backbone on coronary artery segmentation, which improves the results consistently. Moreover, we experiment with few-shot learning to further improve performance, given our low data regime. We present our results together with subgroup analyses based on Rentrop grading, collateral flow, and collateral grading, which provide valuable insights into model performance. Overall, the proposed method shows promising results in detecting CCC, and can be further extended to perform landmark based CCC detection and CCC quantification.

We use soft x-ray vector-ptychographic tomography to determine the three-dimensional magnetization field in superparamagnetic nanoparticles self-assembled at the liquid-liquid interface and reveal the magnetic order induced by layered structure. The spins in individual nanoparticles become more aligned with increasing number of layers, resulting in a larger net magnetization. Our experimental results show a magnetic short-range order in the monolayer due to the proliferation of thermally induced magnetic vortices and a magnetic long-range order in the bilayer and trilayer, stemming from the strengthened dipolar interactions that effectively suppress thermal fluctuations. We also observe a screening effect of magnetic vortices and the attractive interaction between the magnetic vortices with opposite topological charges. Our work demonstrates the crucial role of layered structure in shaping the magnetization of nanoparticle assemblies, providing new opportunities to modulate these properties through strategic layer engineering.

Semantic segmentation models trained on annotated data fail to generalize well when the input data distribution changes over extended time period, leading to requiring re-training to maintain performance. Classic Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) attempts to address a similar problem when there is target domain with no annotated data points through transferring knowledge from a source domain with annotated data. We develop an online UDA algorithm for semantic segmentation of images that improves model generalization on unannotated domains in scenarios where source data access is restricted during adaptation. We perform model adaptation is by minimizing the distributional distance between the source latent features and the target features in a shared embedding space. Our solution promotes a shared domain-agnostic latent feature space between the two domains, which allows for classifier generalization on the target dataset. To alleviate the need of access to source samples during adaptation, we approximate the source latent feature distribution via an appropriate surrogate distribution, in this case a Gassian mixture model (GMM). We evaluate our approach on well established semantic segmentation datasets and demonstrate it compares favorably against state-of-the-art (SOTA) UDA semantic segmentation methods.

FLUKA is among the general-purpose codes for the Monte Carlo simulation of radiation transport that are routinely employed to estimate the production of single-event-upsets (SEUs) in commercial static random access memories (SRAMs) exposed to radiation. Earlier studies concerning the production of SEUs in commercial SRAMs under proton irradiation revealed very good agreement between experimental measurements and FLUKA estimates of the SEU production cross section for proton energies above 20-30 MeV. However, at lower proton energies, where the cross section for SEU production in such low-critical-charge components increases drastically, a FLUKA underestimation of up to two orders of magnitude was observed. Preliminary analyses indicated that this underestimation was in great measure due to the lack of nuclear elastic scattering of protons below 10 MeV in FLUKA up to version 4-3.4. To overcome this limitation, a new model for the nuclear elastic scattering of protons has been developed, combining partial-wave analyses and experimental angular distributions. This newly developed model has been included in FLUKA v4-4.0, and leads to an order-of-magnitude improvement in the agreement between FLUKA and experimental cross sections for the production of SEUs in SRAMs under proton irradiation in the 1-10 MeV energy domain., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures

This paper introduces DEM-Engine, a new submodule of Project Chrono, that is designed to carry out Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations. Based on spherical primitive shapes, DEM-Engine can simulate polydisperse granular materials and handle complex shapes generated as assemblies of primitives, referred to as clumps. DEM-Engine has a multi-tier parallelized structure that is optimized to operate simultaneously on two GPUs. The code uses custom-defined data types to reduce memory footprint and increase bandwidth. A novel "delayed contact detection" algorithm allows the decoupling of the contact detection and force computation, thus splitting the workload into two asynchronous GPU streams. DEM-Engine uses just-in-time compilation to support user-defined contact force models. This paper discusses its C++ and Python interfaces and presents a variety of numerical tests, in which impact forces, complex-shaped particle flows, and a custom force model are validated considering well-known benchmark cases. Additionally, the full potential of the simulator is demonstrated for the investigation of extraterrestrial rover mobility on granular terrain. The chosen case study demonstrates that large-scale co-simulations (comprising 11 million elements) spanning 15 seconds, in conjunction with an external multi-body dynamics system, can be efficiently executed within a day. Lastly, a performance test suggests that DEM-Engine displays linear scaling up to 150 million elements on two NVIDIA A100 GPUs., Comment: 38 pages, 30 figures, 9 tables. Privacy is a key principle for developing ethical AI technologies, but how does including AI technologies in products and services change privacy risks? We constructed a taxonomy of AI privacy risks by analyzing 321 documented AI privacy incidents. We codified how the unique capabilities and requirements of AI technologies described in those incidents generated new privacy risks, exacerbated known ones, or otherwise did not meaningfully alter the risk. We present 12 high-level privacy risks that AI technologies either newly created (e.g., exposure risks from deepfake pornography) or exacerbated (e.g., surveillance risks from collecting training data). One upshot of our work is that incorporating AI technologies into a product can alter the privacy risks it entails. Yet, current approaches to privacy-preserving AI/ML (e.g., federated learning, differential privacy, checklists) only address a subset of the privacy risks arising from the capabilities and data requirements of AI.

This note aims to study the iteration theory of noncommutative self-maps of bounded matrix convex domains. We prove a version of the Denjoy-Wolff theorem for the row ball and the maximal quantization of the unit ball of $\mathbb{C}^d$. For more general bounded matrix convex sets, we prove a version of Wolff's theorem inspired by the results of Abate. Lastly, we use iteration and fixed point theory to generalize the commutative results of Davidson, Ramsey, and Shalit to quotients of the free semigroup algebra by WOT closed ideals.

We propose to explore a cascade extreme Adaptive optics (ExAO) approach with a second stage based on a Zernike wavefront sensor (ZWFS) for exoplanet imaging and spectroscopy. Most exoplanet imagers currently use a single-stage ExAO to correct for the effects of atmospheric turbulence and produce high-Strehl images of observed stars in the near-infrared. While such systems enable the observation of warm gaseous companions around nearby stars, adding a second-stage AO enables to push the wavefront correction further and possibly observe colder or smaller planets. This approach is currently investigated in different exoplanet imagers (VLT/SPHERE, Mag-AOX, Subaru/SCExAO) by considering a Pyramid wavefront sensor (PWFS) in the second arm to measure the residual atmospheric turbulence left from the first stage. Since these aberrations are expected to be very small (a few tens of nm in the near-infrared domain), we propose to investigate an alternative approach based on the ZWFS. This sensor is a promising concept with a small capture range to estimate residual wavefront errors thanks to its large sensitivity, simple phase reconstruction and easiness of implementation. In this contribution, we perform preliminary tests on the GHOST testbed at ESO to validate this approach experimentally. Additional experiments with petalling effects are also showed, giving promising wavefront correction results. Finally, we briefly discuss a first comparison between PWFS-based and ZWFS-based second-stage AO to draw preliminary conclusions on the interests of both schemes for exoplanet imaging and spectroscopy with the upgrade of the current exoplanet imagers and the envisioned ExAO instruments for ELTs., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, pre-print of the proceeding of the AO4ELT7 conference held in June 2023 in Avignon, France

For any $n\geq4$ even, we establish a complete scattering theory for the linear wave equation on the $(n+1)$-dimensional de Sitter space. We prove the existence and uniqueness of scattering states, and asymptotic completeness. Moreover, we construct the scattering map taking asymptotic data at past infinity $\mathscr{I}^-$ to asymptotic data at future infinity $\mathscr{I}^+$. Identifying $\mathscr{I}^-$ and $\mathscr{I}^+$ with $S^n,$ we prove that the scattering map is a Banach space isomorphism on $H^{s+n}(S^n)\times H^{s}(S^n),$ for any $s\geq1.$ The main analysis is carried out at the level of the model equation obtained by differentiating the linear wave equation $\frac{n}{2}$ times in the time variable. The main result of the paper follows from proving a scattering theory for this equation. We study the trigonometric quantum spin-Calogero-Sutherland model, and the Haldane-Shastry spin chain as a special case, using a Bethe-ansatz analysis. We harness the model's Yangian symmetry to import the standard tools of integrability for Heisenberg spin chains into the world of integrable long-range models with spins. From the transfer matrix with a diagonal twist we construct Heisenberg-style symmetries (Bethe algebra) that refine the usual hierarchy of commuting Hamiltonians (quantum determinant) of the spin-Calogero-Sutherland model. We compute the first few of these new conserved charges explicitly, and diagonalise them by Bethe ansatz inside each irreducible Yangian representation. This yields a new eigenbasis for the spin-Calogero-Sutherland model that generalises the Yangian Gelfand-Tsetlin basis of Takemura and Uglov. The Bethe-ansatz analysis involves non-generic values of the inhomogeneities. We examine the moments of the number of lattice points in a fixed ball of volume $V$ for lattices in Euclidean space which are modules over the ring of integers of a number field $K$. In particular, denoting by $\omega_K$ the number of roots of unity in $K$, we show that for lattices of large enough dimension the moments of the number of $\omega_K$-tuples of lattice points converge to those of a Poisson distribution of mean $V/\omega_K$. This extends work of Rogers for $\mathbb{Z}$-lattices. It is shown micromagnetic and atomistic spin dynamics simulations can use multiple GPUs in order to reduce computation time, but also to allow for a larger simulation size than is possible on a single GPU. Whilst interactions which depend on neighbouring spins, such as exchange interactions, may be implemented efficiently by transferring data between GPUs using halo regions, or alternatively using direct memory accesses, implementing the long-range demagnetizing interaction is the main difficulty in achieving good performance scaling, where the data transfer rate between GPUs is a significant bottleneck. A multi-GPU convolution algorithm is developed here, which relies on single-GPU FFTs executed in parallel. It is shown that even for micromagnetic simulations where the demagnetizing interaction computation time dominates, good performance scaling may be achieved, with speedup factors up to 1.8, 2.5, and 3.1, for 2, 3, and 4 GPUs respectively. The code developed here can be used for any number of GPUs in parallel, with performance scaling strongly dependent on inter-GPU data transfer rate and connection topology. This is further improved in micromagnetic simulations which include a spin transport solver, obtaining speedup factors up to 1.96, 2.8, and 3.7, for 2, 3, and 4 GPUs respectively. The best case scenario is obtained for atomistic spin dynamics simulations, where the demagnetizing interaction is implemented with spin-averaged cells. Using a single workstation with 4 GPUs, it is shown atomistic spin dynamics simulations with up to 1 billion spins, and atomistic Monte Carlo simulations with up to 2 billion spins are possible, with a near-ideal performance scaling.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of AI-assisted programming in actual mobile development teams that are focused on native mobile languages like Kotlin and Swift. The extensive case study involves 16 participants and 2 technical reviewers, from a software development department designed to understand the impact of using LLMs trained for code generation in specific phases of the team, more specifically, technical onboarding and technical stack switch. The study uses technical problems dedicated to each phase and requests solutions from the participants with and without using AI-Code generators. It measures time, correctness, and technical integration using ReviewerScore, a metric specific to the paper and extracted from actual industry standards, the code reviewers of merge requests. The output is converted and analyzed together with feedback from the participants in an attempt to determine if using AI-assisted programming tools will have an impact on getting developers onboard in a project or helping them with a smooth transition between the two native development environments of mobile development, Android and iOS. Malnutrition and dehydration are strongly associated with increased cognitive and functional decline in people living with dementia (PLWD), as well as an increased rate of hospitalisations in comparison to their healthy counterparts. Extreme changes in eating and drinking behaviours can often lead to malnutrition and dehydration, accelerating the progression of cognitive and functional decline and resulting in a marked reduction in quality of life. Unfortunately, there are currently no established methods by which to objectively detect such changes. Here, we present the findings of an extensive quantitative analysis conducted on in-home monitoring data collected from 73 households of PLWD using Internet of Things technologies. The Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has previously been shown to have dramatically altered the behavioural habits, particularly the eating and drinking habits, of PLWD. Using the COVID-19 pandemic as a natural experiment, we conducted linear mixed-effects modelling to examine changes in mean kitchen activity within a subset of 21 households of PLWD that were continuously monitored for 499 days. We report an observable increase in day-time kitchen activity and a significant decrease in night-time kitchen activity (t(147) = -2.90, p < 0.001). We further propose a novel analytical approach to detecting changes in behaviours of PLWD using Markov modelling applied to remote monitoring data as a proxy for behaviours that cannot be directly measured. We discuss the use of the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to simulate the dynamics of granular systems made up of elements with nontrivial geometries. The DEM simulator is GPU accelerated and can handle elements whose shape is defined as the union with overlap of diverse sets of spheres with user-specified radii. The simulator can also handle complex materials since each sphere in an element can have its own Young's modulus $E$, Poisson ratio $\nu$, friction coefficient $\mu$, and coefficient of restitution CoR. To demonstrate the simulator, we produce a "digital simulant" (DS), a replica of the GRC-1 lunar simulant. The DS follows an element size distribution similar but not identical to that of GRC-1. We validate the predictive attributes of the simulator via several numerical experiments: repose angle, cone penetration, drawbar pull, and rover incline-climbing tests. Subsequently, we carry out a sensitivity analysis to gauge how the slope vs. slip curves change when the element shape, element size, and friction coefficient change. The paper concludes with a VIPER rover simulation that confirms a recently proposed granular scaling law. The simulation involves more than 11 million elements composed of more than 34 million spheres of different radii. The simulator works in the Chrono framework and utilizes two GPUs concurrently. Tailoring treatment for individual patients is crucial yet challenging in order to achieve optimal healthcare outcomes. Recent advances in reinforcement learning offer promising personalized treatment recommendations; however, they rely solely on current patient observations (vital signs, demographics) as the patient's state, which may not accurately represent the true health status of the patient. This limitation hampers policy learning and evaluation, ultimately limiting treatment effectiveness. In this study, we propose the Deep Attention Q-Network for personalized treatment recommendations, utilizing the Transformer architecture within a deep reinforcement learning framework to efficiently incorporate all past patient observations. We evaluated the model on real-world sepsis and acute hypotension cohorts, demonstrating its superiority to state-of-the-art models. This paper proposes a novel approach to predict epidemiological parameters by integrating new real-time signals from various sources of information, such as novel social media-based population density maps and Air Quality data. We implement an ensemble of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) models using various data sources and fusion methodology to build robust predictions and simulate several dynamic parameters that could improve the decision-making process for policymakers. Additionally, we used data assimilation to estimate the state of our system from fused CNN predictions. The combination of meteorological signals and social media-based population density maps improved the performance and flexibility of our prediction of the COVID-19 outbreak in London. While the proposed approach outperforms standard models, such as compartmental models traditionally used in disease forecasting (SEIR), generating robust and consistent predictions allows us to increase the stability of our model while increasing its accuracy.

We describe a simple parallel-friendly lightweight graph reordering algorithm for COO graphs (edge lists). Our ``Batched Order By Attachment'' (BOBA) algorithm is linear in the number of edges in terms of reads and linear in the number of vertices for writes through to main memory. It is highly parallelizable on GPUs\@. We show that, compared to a randomized baseline, the ordering produced gives improved locality of reference in sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMV) as well as other graph algorithms. Moreover, it can substantially speed up the conversion from a COO representation to the compressed format CSR, a very common workflow. Thus, it can give \emph{end-to-end} speedups even in SpMV\@. Unlike other lightweight approaches, this reordering does not rely on explicitly knowing the degrees of the vertices, and indeed its runtime is comparable to that of computing degrees. Instead, it uses the structure and edge distribution inherent in the input edge list, making it a candidate for default use in a pragmatic graph creation pipeline. This algorithm is suitable for road-type networks as well as scale-free. It improves cache locality on both CPUs and GPUs, achieving hit rates similar to the heavyweight techniques (e.g., for SpMV, 7--52\% and 11--67\% in the L1 and L2 caches, respectively). Compared to randomly labeled graphs, BOBA-reordered graphs achieve end-to-end speedups of up to 3.45. The reordering time is approximately one order of magnitude faster than existing lightweight techniques and up to 2.5 orders of magnitude faster than heavyweight techniques.

Oxide heterostructures have shown rich physics phenomena, particularly in the conjunction of exotic insulator-metal transition (IMT) at the interface between polar insulator LaAlO3 and non-polar insulator SrTiO3 (LaAlO3/SrTiO3). Polarization catastrophe model has suggested an electronic reconstruction yielding to metallicity at both the interface and surface. Another scenario is the occurrence of surface oxygen vacancy at LaAlO3 (surface-Ov), which has predicted surface-to-interface charge transfer yielding metallic interface but insulating surface. To clarify the origin of IMT, one should probe surface-Ov and the associated electronic structures at both the surface and the buried interface simultaneously. Here, using low-angle resonant soft X-ray scattering (LA-RSXS) supported with first-principles calculations, we reveal the co-existence of the surface-Ov state and the interface conducting state only in conducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (001) films. Interestingly, both the surface-Ov state and the interface conducting state are absent for the insulating film. As a function of Ov density, while the surface-Ov state is responsible for the IMT, the spatial charge distribution is found responsible for a transition from two-dimensional-like to three-dimensional-like conducting accompanied by spectral weight transfer, revealing the importance of electronic correlation. Our results show the importance of surface-Ov in determining interface properties and provides a new strategy in utilizing LA-RSXS to directly probe the surface and buried interface electronic properties in complex oxide heterostructures.

Knowledge graph completion (KGC), the task of predicting missing information based on the existing relational data inside a knowledge graph (KG), has drawn significant attention in recent years. However, the predictive power of KGC methods is often limited by the completeness of the existing knowledge graphs from different sources and languages. In monolingual and multilingual settings, KGs are potentially complementary to each other. In this paper, we study the problem of multi-KG completion, where we focus on maximizing the collective knowledge from different KGs to alleviate the incompleteness of individual KGs. Specifically, we propose a novel method called CKGC-CKD that uses relation-aware graph convolutional network encoder models on both individual KGs and a large fused KG in which seed alignments between KGs are regarded as edges for message propagation. An additional mutual knowledge distillation mechanism is also employed to maximize the knowledge transfer between the models of "global" fused KG and the "local" individual KGs. We give a construction of a state sum invariant of a closed spin 3-manifold based on a super 3-cocycle $(\widetilde{\alpha}, \omega)$ and a combinatorial representation of a spin 3-manifold, where $\omega$ is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-valued cocycle and $\widetilde{\alpha}$ is a 3-cochain satisfying a 3-cocycle condition with a sign coming from the 2-cocycle $\omega$. The definition of the invariant is similar to the state sum construction of the Dijkgraaf-Witten invariant, except it uses the spin structure to take care of the sign in the 3-cocycle condition. In robotics, simulation has the potential to reduce design time and costs, and lead to a more robust engineered solution and a safer development process. However, the use of simulators is predicated on the availability of good models. This contribution is concerned with improving the quality of these models via calibration, which is cast herein in a Bayesian framework. First, we discuss the Bayesian machinery involved in model calibration. Then, we demonstrate it in one example: calibration of a vehicle dynamics model that has low degree of freedom count and can be used for state estimation, model predictive control, or path planning. A high fidelity simulator is used to emulate the ``experiments'' and generate the data for the calibration. The merit of this work is not tied to a new Bayesian methodology for calibration, but to the demonstration of how the Bayesian machinery can establish connections among models in computational dynamics, even when the data in use is noisy. Since GDPR went into effect in 2018, many other data protection and privacy regulations have been released. With the new regulation, there has been an associated increase in industry professionals focused on data protection and privacy. Building on related work showing the potential benefits of knowledge management in organisational compliance and privacy engineering, this paper presents the findings of an exploratory qualitative study with data protection officers and other privacy professionals. We found issues with knowledge management to be the underlying challenge of our participants' feedback. Our participants noted four categories of feedback: (1) a perceived disconnect between regulation and practice, (2) a general lack of clear job description, (3) the need for data protection and privacy to be involved at every level of an organisation, (4) knowledge management tools exist but are not used effectively. Controllable text generation (CTG) by large language models has a huge potential to transform education for teachers and students alike. Specifically, high quality and diverse question generation can dramatically reduce the load on teachers and improve the quality of their educational content. Recent work in this domain has made progress with generation, but fails to show that real teachers judge the generated questions as sufficiently useful for the classroom setting; or if instead the questions have errors and/or pedagogically unhelpful content. We conduct a human evaluation with teachers to assess the quality and usefulness of outputs from combining CTG and question taxonomies (Bloom's and a difficulty taxonomy).
