The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the UK has adopted statistical methods for optimizing the performance of adhesive joints. The design approach includes finite element analysis, fracture mechanics, fractography, analytical modeling and mechanical testing, among others. NPL is using the statistical approach to develop a methodology for producing adhesively bonded joints for chemical and cyclic loading environments. The methods allow the laboratory to determine factors that affect the performance of adhesive joints under hostile conditions.
