"Purpose: Developmentally regulated GTP-binding protein 2 (DRG2) regulates microtubule dynamics and G2/M arrest during docetaxel treatment. Poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) acts as an important repair system for DNA damage caused by docetaxel treatment. This study investigated whether DRG2 expression affects response to PARP inhibitors (olaparib) using prostate cancer cell lines PC3, DU145, LNCaP-FGC, and LNCaP-LN3. Materials and Methods: The cell viability and DRG2 expression levels were assessed using colorimetric-based cell viability assay and western blot. Cells were transfected with DRG2 siRNA, and pcDNA6/V5-DRG2 was used to overexpress DRG2. Flow cytometry was applied for cell cycle assay and apoptosis analysis using the Annexing V cell death assay. Results: The expression of DRG2 was highest in LNCaP-LN3 and lowest in DU145 cells. Expressions of p53 in PC3, DU145, and the two LNCaP cell lines were null-type, high-expression, and medium-expression, respectively. In PC3 (DRG2 high, p53 null) cells, docetaxel increased G2/M arrest without apoptosis; however, subsequent treatment with olaparib promoted apoptosis. In DU145 and LNCaP-FGC (DRG2 low), docetaxel increased sub-G1 but not G2/M arrest and induced apoptosis, whereas olaparib had no additional effect. In LNCaP-LN3 (DRG2 high, p53 wild-type), docetaxel increased sub-G1 and G2/M arrest, furthermore olaparib enhanced cell death. Docetaxel and olaparib combination treatment had a slight effect on DRG2 knockdown PC3, but increased apoptosis in DRG2-overexpressed DU145 cells. Conclusions: DRG2 and p53 expressions play an important role in prostate cancer cell lines treated with docetaxel, and DRG2 levels can predict the response to PARP inhibitors."

In 2022, citrus fruits were the second most widely produced fruit globally, highlighting their significant role in the fruit industry. However, due to their clonal propagation, these fruits are highly susceptible to viral infections, posing challenges for growers. In response to the booming nursery market, the Korean plant quarantine station reported over 80 million sapling stocks, with 15% being discarded after rigorous inspection due to contamination or disease. As the global nursery trade continues to expand, there is an urgent need for a fast and accurate diagnostic tool to ensure the health of plant stocks. In this study, we developed a TaqMan-based real-time reverse transcription-quantitative PCR assay specifically designed to detect two critical citrus viruses: citrus psorosis virus and citrus leprosis virus C. Our assay demonstrated the capability to detect virus sequences with as few as 30 copies, maintaining high PCR efficiency with RNA extracted from both twig and leaf tissues. Additionally, we incorporated an artificial sequence into the positive controls, which effectively served as a marker for detecting potential sample contamination. This comprehensive diagnostic system promises to enhance plant quarantine measures and phytosanitation practices, providing a reliable and efficient solution to safeguard citrus crops from viral threats.

Abstract Background Spina bifida (SB) is a chronic condition requiring lifelong self-management, underscoring the need to establish a dedicated cohort for longitudinal monitoring of health outcomes. The purpose of this study was to describe the development and initial implementation of a single-center prospective cohort study of children with SB and their parents living in South Korea and to describe demographics, clinical outcomes, psychosocial characteristics, and family data for this cohort. Methods This cohort was established through expert panel formation, identification of health indicators based on the Life Course Model for Spina Bifida, creation of a cohort database system, and quality control planning. Participants, children aged 4–12 years with SB and their parents, were recruited from a large SB clinic at a tertiary hospital in South Korea. Two approaches were used to collect data: (1) diagnosis and clinical outcomes (e.g., lesion level, surgical history, laboratory results) were collected from the electronic medical record by pediatric nurse practitioners and (2) demographics, psychosocial characteristics and family data were collected from online self-reported questionnaires completed by children with SB and their parents if the child with SB was aged 7–12 years and by only the parents if the child with SB was aged 4–6 years. Results Between September 2022 and September 2023, 162 children (mean age 7.6 ± 2.6 years) and their parents participated, with 35.8% (4–6 years), 29% (7–9 years), and 35.2% (10–12 years). Diagnoses included lipomyelomeningocele (51.2%), myelomeningocele (27.2%), and tethered cord syndrome (20.4%). Clean intermittent catheterization was used by 38.3% and enemas by 22.2%. Moreover, 30.9% experienced urinary incontinence and 26.5% experienced fecal incontinence. Ambulation assistive devices were used by 14.8%, and ventriculoperitoneal shunts by only 4.3%. Conclusions This cohort provides a comprehensive understanding of demographics, and clinical and psychosocial outcomes for children with SB in South Korea. The dataset offers opportunities for data-driven, life-course tailored interventions to meet the specific needs of this population and their families.

Abstract Recently, an investigation into preventive measures for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has garnered considerable attention. Consequently, strategies for the proactive prevention of viral pathogens have also attracted significant interest in the field of wearable devices and electronic textiles research, particularly due to their potential applications in personal protective equipment. In this study, we introduce smart textiles designed with optimized piezoelectric devices that exhibit antifouling performance against microorganisms and actively inactivate viruses. These active-type smart textiles, which incorporate advanced lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics, a stretchable interconnector array, and polymeric fabric, demonstrate effective antifouling capabilities, detaching approximately 90% of Escherichia coli and 75% of SARS-CoV-2. Furthermore, they inactivate viruses, releasing ~26.8 ng of N protein from ruptured SARS-CoV-2, using ultrasonic waves within the wearable platform. Experimental results show that piezoelectric smart textiles significantly reduce the spread of COVID-19 by leveraging the electrical and acoustic properties of PZT ceramics.

Abstract Understanding litter decomposition processes in coastal macrophyte habitats is critically important for predicting ecosystem functioning. However, decomposition processes of litter mixtures in coastal habitats remain largely unexplored. Here, we evaluated the litter mixture effects on the decomposition of six marine macrophytes (two seagrasses and four macroalgae) through in situ litter-mixing experiments with five levels of litter species richness and 36 different litter compositions. We found that the litter species identity and composition, rather than species richness, were crucial in structuring benthic faunal communities. Macroalgal litter, particularly Sargassum sp., hosted higher numbers of polychaetes and crustaceans than seagrass litter. More macroalgal presence induced faster decomposition rates of seagrass litter in the late stage, but not in the early stage. These findings suggest that changes in macrophyte diversity and composition can alter decomposition processes and, consequently, the sediment organic carbon stock through the transition of litter sources and benthic faunas.

This study aimed to compare the changes in the bioactivities of peptide extracts (< 10 kDa) obtained from Jeju black pigs (JBP) and three-way crossbred pigs (Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc, LYD) before and after digestion. The results showed that the loin peptide extracts of JBP maintained high 2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity after in vitro digestion. However, the iron chelating activity and antihypertensive activity of all peptide extracts were decreased. This study suggested that the peptide extracts produced through alkaline-AK digestion have sufficiently high antioxidant and antihypertensive activities; however, these activities were reduced after in vitro digestion. Meanwhile, the JBP loin and ham peptide extracts promoted high superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity than that of LYD when administered to mice. Furthermore, the ham peptide extracts of JBP showed a relatively high antihypertensive activity in mice. Therefore, it is deemed that these peptide extracts from JBP are more bioactive than that of LYD, and can be used as bioactive materials.

Abstract Atmospheric mercury (Hg(0), Hg(II)) and riverine exported Hg (Hg(II)) are proposed as important Hg sources to the Arctic Ocean. As plankton cannot passively uptake Hg(0), gaseous Hg(0) has to be oxidized to be bioavailable. Here, we measured Hg isotope ratios in zooplankton, Arctic cod, total gaseous Hg, sediment, seawater, and snowpack from the Bering Strait, the Chukchi Sea, and the Beaufort Sea. The Δ200Hg, used to differentiate between Hg(0) and Hg(II), shows, on average, 70% of Hg(0) in all biota and differs with seawater Δ200Hg (Hg(II)). Since Δ200Hg anomalies occur via tropospheric Hg(0) oxidation, we propose that near-surface Hg(0) oxidation via terrestrial vegetation, coastally evaded halogens, and sea salt aerosols, which preserve Δ200Hg of Hg(0) upon oxidation, supply bioavailable Hg(II) pools in seawater. Our study highlights sources and pathways in which Hg(0) poses potential ecological risks to the Arctic Ocean biota.

This study investigated the effect of extracts from unfertilized eggs and fertilized eggs with different culture periods as FBS substitutes for cell culture. A mixture of 5 % FBS and 20 % egg white extract or 10 % FBS and 10 % egg white extract was found to be the optimal condition for increasing cell proliferation. In particular, egg white extract obtained from unfertilized eggs was more effective in terms of increased cell viability and price competitiveness and showed similar effects to commercial FBS. In addition, when using this extract, successful proliferation of satellite cells was confirmed, as well as expression of Pax7, a protein present in muscle satellite cells. Additionally, OVF and OVA in the extract are believed to have an indirect effect on FBS replacements for chick muscle satellite cells towards cultured meat development. Egg white extract can replace up to 50–75 % of FBS. Further developments of the extracts could result in complete FBS substitution.

ABSTRACT: This review was conducted to provide basic knowledge in developing new culture media for cultured meat production by compiling research on how the main media components affect cell proliferation and muscle differentiation. The culturing process can be divided into five processes: cell acquisition, cell proliferation, cell differentiation, myotube formation, and muscle maturation. To date, cultural media research has shown that amino acids, fatty acids, and carbohydrates mainly act as energy and nutrient sources for cell proliferation and muscle production, and minerals mainly play roles as regulators of cell proliferation and muscle production. Vitamins not only protect cells from oxidative stress but also promote cell growth and regulate cell growth-related genes. Additionally, cytokines play a role in regulating genes related to muscle proliferation and regeneration, and hormones, such as growth factors, insulin, and thyroid hormones, benefit muscle growth and regulation.

Abstract It is self‐evident that our chests expand and contract during breathing but, surprisingly, exactly how individual alveoli change shape over the respiratory cycle is still a matter of debate. Some argue that all the alveoli expand and contract rhythmically. Others claim that the lung volume change is due to groups of alveoli collapsing and reopening during ventilation. Although this question might seem to be an insignificant detail for healthy individuals, it might be a matter of life and death for patients with compromised lungs. Past analyses were based on static post‐mortem preparations primarily due to technological limitations, and therefore, by definition, incapable of providing dynamic information. In contrast, this study provides the first comprehensive dynamic data on how the shape of the alveoli changes, and, further, provides valuable insights into the optimal lung volume for efficient gas exchange. It is concluded that alveolar micro‐dynamics is nonlinear; and at medium lung volume, alveoli expand more than the ducts.

Abstract In this study, a novel synthesis of ultrathin, highly uniform colloidal bismuth sulfohalide (BiSX where X = Cl, Br, I) nanowires (NWs) and NW bundles (NBs) for room‐temperature and solution‐processed flexible photodetectors are presented. High‐aspect‐ratio bismuth sulfobromide (BiSBr) NWs are synthesized via a heat‐up method using bismuth bromide and elemental S as precursors and 1‐dodecanethiol as a solvent. Bundling of the BiSBr NWs occurs upon the addition of 1‐octadecene as a co‐solvent. The morphologies of the BiSBr NBs are easily tailored from sheaf‐like structures to spherulite nanostructures by changing the solvent ratio. The optical bandgaps are modulated from 1.91 (BiSCl) and 1.88 eV (BiSBr) to 1.53 eV (BiSI) by changing the halide compositions. The optical bandgap of the ultrathin BiSBr NWs and NBs exhibits blueshift, whose origin is investigated through density functional theory‐based first‐principles calculations. Visible‐light photodetectors are fabricated using BiSBr NWs and NBs via solution‐based deposition followed by solid‐state ligand exchanges. High photo‐responsivities and external quantum efficiencies (EQE) are obtained for BiSBr NW and NB films even under strain, which offer a unique opportunity for the application of the novel BiSX NWs and NBs in flexible and environmentally friendly optoelectronic devices.

Abstract Background Oral ulcers are a common side effect of chemotherapy and affect patients’ quality of life. While stem cell transplantation is a potential treatment for oral ulcers, its efficacy is limited as the stem cells tend to remain in the affected area for a short time. This study aims to develop a treatment for oral ulcers by using trimethyl chitosan (TMC) hydrogel with human tonsil-derived stem cells (hTMSCs) to increase the therapeutic effect of stem cells and investigate their effectiveness. Methods Animals were divided into four experimental groups: Control, TMC hydrogel, hTMSCs, and hTMSCs loaded in TMC hydrogel (Hydrogel + hTMSCs) (each n = 8). Oral ulcers were chemically induced by anesthetizing the rats followed by injection of dilute acetic acid in the right buccal mucosa. After confirming the presence of oral ulcers in the animals, a single subcutaneous injection of 100 µL of each treatment was applied to the ulcer area. Histological analyses were performed to measure inflammatory cells, oral mucosal thickness, and fibrosis levels. The expression level of inflammatory cytokines was also measured using RT-PCR to gauge therapeutic the effect. Results The ulcer size was significantly reduced in the TMC hydrogel + hTMSCs group compared to the control group. The stem cells in the tissue were only observed until Day 3 in the hTMSCs treated group, while the injected stem cells in the TMC Hydrogel + hTMSCs group were still present until day 7. Cytokine analysis related to the inflammatory response in the tissue confirmed that the TMC Hydrogel + hTMSCs treated group demonstrated superior wound healing compared to other experimental groups. Conclusion This study has shown that the adhesion and viability of current stem cell therapies can be resolved by utilizing a hydrogel prepared with TMC and combining it with hTMSCs. The combined treatment can promote rapid healing of oral cavity wounds by enhancing anti-inflammatory effects and expediting wound healing. Therefore, hTMSC loaded in TMC hydrogel was the most effective wound-healing approach among all four treatment groups prolonging stem cell survival. However, further research is necessary to minimize the initial inflammatory response of biomaterials and assess the safety and long-term effects for potential clinical applications.

Giant adrenal myelolipomas are rare, benign, and hormonally inactive tumors. We present the case of a 53-year-old man with a 19-cm retroperitoneal mass, initially suspected to be a retroperitoneal liposarcoma, angiomyolipoma, or adrenal myelolipoma. After conducting endocrine assessments, which were within normal ranges, we decided to perform surgical excision using a modified Makuuchi incision. The tumor was successfully removed, and the final pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of adrenal myelolipoma. The patient was discharged with no complications and remained without disease recurrence or distant metastasis as of 1 year postoperatively. In conclusion, giant myelolipomas are rare and cause symptoms owing to their large size. Surgical removal is recommended for large or symptomatic myelolipomas. The modified Makuuchi incision allows efficient and safe tumor removal in open surgery for giant myelolipomas.

Individuals with glaucoma are routinely prescribed and required to self-administer eye drop-based medication multiple times a day. Unfortunately, the process of self-administering eye drops requires a level of dexterity, strength, and visual acuity that the elderly population often do not possess, resulting in poor adherence and worsening condition. In this paper, we detail a prototyped eye drop assist device designed to safely and reliably deliver prescription medications. The ergonomic device safely anchors the eye drop bottle tip an optimal distance away from the face, aligns to the pupil, and provides feedback to the user when their head is at an appropriate tilt for a successful eye drop administration. We experimentally verify that the device improves hand steadiness, provides accurate head tilt feedback, precisely positions the bottle tip, and predictably delivers eye drops into the eye according to a parameterized model.

Interest and investment in cultivated meat are increasing because of the realization that it can effectively supply sufficient food resources and reduce the use of livestock. Nevertheless, accurate information on the specific technologies used for cultivated meat production and the characteristics of cultivated meat is lacking. Authorization for the use of cultivated meat is already underway in the United States, Singapore, and Israel, and other major countries are also expected to approve cultivated meat as food once the details of the intricate process of producing cultivated meat, which encompasses stages such as cell proliferation, differentiation, maturation, and assembly, is thoroughly established. The development and standardization of mass production processes and safety evaluations must precede the industrialization and use of cultivated meat as food. However, the technology for the industrialization of cultivated meat is still in its nascent stage, and the mass production process has not yet been established. The mass production process of cultivated meat may not be easy to disclose because it is related to the interests of several companies or research teams. However, the overall research flow shows that equipment development for mass production and cell acquisition, proliferation, and differentiation, as well as for three-dimensional production supports and bioreactors have not yet been completed. Therefore, additional research on the mass production process and safety of cultivated meat is essential. The consumer’s trust in the cultivated meat products and production technologies recently disclosed by some companies should also be analyzed and considered for guiding future developments in this industry. Furthermore, close monitoring by academia and the government will be necessary to identify fraud in the cultivated meat industry.

Abstract The electrochemically deposited reduced graphene oxide-PEDOT:PSS/Nafion (rGO-PP/NF) hybrid material has provided a favorable interface for the simultaneous detection of dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT). The rGO-PP/NF onto the Au seed layer of the flexible substrate was simple, and it was followed by the sequential electrophoretic deposition of GO, reduction at the optimal pH buffer media, electropolymerization of EDOT:PSS, and Nafion coating. The strong electron-transport capacity between rGO-PEDOT:PSS and the negatively charged Nafion matrix might allow the highly sensitive, simultaneous, and selective detection of DA and 5-HT due to its high affinity for cations. In the results of the electrochemical response, well-separated oxidation peaks were observed in a mixture that contained various concentrations of DA and 5-HT. It showed the dynamic sensing of DA and 5-HT in the ranges of 0.5–75 μM and 0.05–50 μM, respectively, and the detection limits of 0.17 and 0.16 μM, respectively. In the mixture of DA and 5-HT, the sensor had a detection limit of 0.1 μM for 5-HT and DA, and its sensitivities of DA and 5-HT were 99.3 and 86 µA/µMcm2. Furthermore, it demonstrated high selectivity, reproducibility, stability, and a recovery property in the human serum spike test that was good enough for the practical use.

This study aimed to analyze the leading research materials and research trends related to livestock food in Asia in recent years and propose future research agendas to ultimately contribute to the development of related livestock species. On analyzing more than 200 relevant articles, a high frequency of studies on livestock species and products with large breeding scales and vast markets was observed. Asia possesses the largest pig population and most extensive pork market, followed by that of beef, chicken, and milk; moreover, blood and egg markets have also been studied. Regarding research keywords, “meat quality” and “probiotics” were the most common, followed by “antioxidants”, which have been extensively studied in the past, and “cultured meat”, which has recently gained traction. The future research agenda for meat products is expected to be dominated by alternative livestock products, such as cultured and plant-derived meats; improved meat product functionality and safety; the environmental impacts of livestock farming; and animal welfare research. The future research agenda for dairy products is anticipated to include animal welfare, dairy production, probiotic-based development of high-quality functional dairy products, the development of alternative dairy products, and the advancement of lactose-free or personalized dairy products. However, determining the extent to which the various research articles’ findings have been applied in real-world industry proved challenging, and research related to animal food laws and policies and consumer surveys was lacking. In addition, studies on alternatives for sustainable livestock development could not be identified. Therefore, future research may augment industrial application, and multidisciplinary research related to animal food laws and policies as well as eco-friendly livestock production should be strengthened.

The aim of study is to determine which environmental factors could influence the biological traits of Z. caespitosa, a unique tuft-forming seagrass. This study examined the dynamics of tufts and the growth of Z. caespitosa, along with the environmental factors. The reproductive traits were also examined to estimate the potential importance of sexual reproduction in population persistence. The density of tufts remained constant, and no new tufts produced through seedling recruitment were observed throughout the sampling period. On the other hand, the tuft size and growth exhibited clear seasonal manners and strong correlations with the water temperature, indicating that water temperature regulates the tuft dynamics and growth. The optimal growth temperature for Z. caespitosa at the study site was approximately ~22.5 °C during early summer, with growth severely inhibited during periods of high-water temperatures. Z. caespitosa was characterized by a low flowering percentage and fewer inflorescences, resulting in extremely low potential seed production. Z. caespitosa maintained its populations through clonal tuft growth with low sexual reproduction and restricted growth at high water temperatures. Hence, this seagrass species may be vulnerable to disturbances, exhibiting low resilience and facing a high risk of becoming a threatened species in coastal waters.

Cannabis (Cannabis sativa) is a versatile crop belonging to the Cannabaceae family, and is dioecious, typically with separate male and female plants. The flowers of female plants, especially the trichomes, accumulate relatively higher contents of cannabinoids compared with those of male plants. For this reason, to obtain seeds that are genetically female, it is desirable to induce the development of male flowers on a female plant that produces genetically female haploid gametes. Silver thiosulfate (STS) is a highly effective chemical for male flower induction. We investigated male flower induction in three commercial cultivars of female cannabis (Spectrum303, SuperwomanS1, and CBGambit) regarding the treatment frequency, stage of application, and concentration of STS applied as a foliar spray. All three cultivars showed adequate induction of male flowers in response to 1.5 mM STS applied at the early reproductive stage. In particular, SuperwomanS1 was most highly responsive to induction of male flowers, even when treated with 0.3 mM STS at the early reproductive stage. Treatment with three applications of STS was more effective compared with a single application, but a single application of 1.5 mM STS at the early reproductive stage was sufficient for male flower induction. A single STS application during the middle stage of reproductive growth was inadequate for induction of male flowers. However, 6 weeks after three applications of STS, CBGambit exhibited approximately 54% male flower induction at 0.3 mM STS, Spectrum303 showed approximately 56% induction at 3 mM STS, and SuperwomanS1 yielded approximately 26% induction at 1.5 mM (expressed as percentage of total number of individuals with the induced male flowers). Pollen stainability tests using KI-I2 solution and Alexander’s staining showed high pollen viability with over 65% at different single STS concentrations, indicating that pollen grains induced by STS have sufficient viability for the self-pollination. This study demonstrated that different cultivars of cannabis respond diversely to different STS concentrations and highlighted the potential benefits of three STS applications during the middle reproductive stage for cannabis breeding.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the recent development of meat analog, industrialization, and the related legal changes worldwide. Summarizing the current status of the industrialization of meat analog, studies on plant-based meat, mycoprotein, and edible insects were mainly conducted to investigate their sensory properties (texture, taste, flavor, and color resembling meat), nutritional and safety evaluations, acquisition method of meat alternatives, and commercialization. Cultured meat is mainly studied for developing muscle satellite cell acquisition and support techniques or materials for the formation of structures. However, these technologies have not reached the level for active industrialization. Even though there are differences in the food categories and labeling between countries, it is common to cause confusion or to relay false information to consumers; therefore, it is important to provide accurate information. In this study, there were some differences in the food classification and food definition (labeling) contents for each country and state depending on the product shape or form, raw materials, and ingredients. Therefore, this study can provide information about the current research available on meat alternatives, improve regulation, and clarify laws related to the meat analog industry, which can potentially grow alongside the livestock industry.

Abstract Complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC), which eliminates aberrant target cells through the assembly and complex formation of serum complement molecules, is one of the major effector functions of anticancer therapeutic antibodies. In this study, we discovered that breaking the symmetry of natural immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies significantly increased the CDC activity of anti-CD20 antibodies. In addition, the expression of CD55 (a checkpoint inhibitor in the CDC cascade) was significantly increased in a rituximab-resistant cell line generated in-house, suggesting that CD55 overexpression might be a mechanism by which cancer cells acquire rituximab resistance. Based on these findings, we developed an asymmetric bispecific antibody (SBU-CD55 × CD20) that simultaneously targets both CD55 and CD20 to effectively eliminate rituximab-resistant cancer cells. In various cancer cell lines, including rituximab-resistant lymphoma cells, the SBU-CD55 × CD20 antibody showed significantly higher CDC activity than either anti-CD20 IgG antibody alone or a combination of anti-CD20 IgG antibody and anti-CD55 IgG antibody. Furthermore, the asymmetric bispecific antibody (SBU-CD55 × CD20) exhibited significantly higher CDC activity against rituximab-resistant cancer cells compared to other bispecific antibodies with symmetric features. These results demonstrate that enhancing CDC with an asymmetric CD55-binding bispecific antibody could be a new strategy for developing therapeutics to treat patients with relapsed or refractory cancers.

Fetal bovine serum (FBS) substitution remains one of the challenges to the realization of cultured meat production in the marketplace. In this study, three methods were developed to extract a substitute for FBS using egg white extract (EWE): using 25 mM CaCl2/2.5 % ammonium sulfate/citric acid (A); ethyl alcohol (B); and 5 % ammonium sulfate/citric acid (C). B EWE can effectively replace up to 50 % of FBS in growth media (10 % of the total). Ovalbumin in the extracts can promote cell proliferation, and components along the 12 kDa protein band have the potential to inhibit cell proliferation. Chick primary muscle cells applied with B EWE, an edible material that improved the cost and time efficiency of cultured meat production, effectively proliferated/differentiated. Therefore, EWE extracted using ethyl alcohol may be used as an FBS substitute to reduce animal sacrifices and should be considered a viable alternative to FBS for cultured meat.

This study aimed to determine the effects of fine dust reduction, as well as the energy load reduction in association with the improvement plans by measuring the airtightness and indoor and outdoor fine dust concentrations in middle and high school classrooms and by identifying the fine dust inflow paths. The air tightness and indoor and outdoor fine dust concentrations were measured at two schools, and the paths of outdoor fine dust inflow were identified for an extensive analysis of the effects of fine dust reduction and the energy load reduction in association with improvement plans. Air tightness in the classroom at school A and B was improved by 32.26% and 38.58% with sealing, respectively. Analyzing the outdoor air inflow paths at school B according to the variation in air tightness, the probability of outdoor air inflow increased in the following order from the highest to the lowest: corridor windows, corridor doors, exterior windows, supply and exhaust units. For the rate of reduction in heating load, the highest rate was shown to be 27% at school A with improved air tightness at the exterior windows and 32% at school B with improved air tightness at the interior doors. This is expected to be reflected in the selection of equipment such as heat pumps and show cost-saving effects such as capacity reduction.

Abstract Background Transition to adulthood to live independently while self-managing health and daily life without parental help is crucial for young adults with chronic conditions. Despite its importance as a precursor to effectively managing lifelong conditions, little is known about the experiences of young adults with spina bifida (SB) in transition to adulthood in Asian countries. This study aimed to explore the experiences of Korean young adults with SB to identify the facilitators or barriers to the transition from adolescence to adulthood from their perspectives. Methods This study used a qualitative descriptive design. The data were collected in South Korea through three focus group interviews with 16 young adults with SB, aged 19–26, from August to November 2020. We conducted a qualitative content analysis using a conventional approach to identify the factors that facilitated and hindered the participants’ transition to adulthood. Results Two themes emerged as facilitators and barriers to the transition to adulthood. a) Facilitators: understanding and acceptance of SB, acquiring self-management skills, parenting styles encouraging autonomy, parents’ emotional support, school teachers’ thoughtful consideration, and participation in self-help groups. b) Barriers: overprotective parenting style, experience of being bullied by peers, damaged self-concept, concealing one’s chronic condition from others, and the lack of privacy in school restrooms. Conclusions Korean young adults with SB shared their experiences of struggling to properly manage their chronic conditions on their own, particularly concerning regular bladder emptying, during the transition from adolescence to adulthood. To facilitate the transition to adulthood, education on the SB and self-management for adolescents with SB and on parenting styles for their parents are important. To eliminate barriers to the transition to adulthood, improving negative perceptions of disability among students and teachers and making school restrooms CIC-friendly are needed.

In this paper, we introduce a new teen-sized humanoid platform dubbed DRACO 3, custom-built by Apptronik and altered for practical use by the Human Centered Robotics Laboratory at The University of Texas at Austin. The form factor of DRACO 3 is such that it can operate safely in human environments while reaching objects at human heights. To approximate the range of motion of humans, this robot features proximal actuation and mechanical artifacts to provide a high range of hip, knee, and ankle motions. In particular, rolling contact mechanisms on the lower body are incorporated using a proximal actuation principle to provide an extensive vertical pose workspace. To enable DRACO 3 to perform dexterous tasks while dealing with these complex transmissions, we introduce a novel whole-body controller (WBC) incorporating internal constraints to model the rolling motion behavior. In addition, details of our WBC for DRACO 3 are presented with an emphasis on practical points for hardware implementation. We perform a design analysis of DRACO 3, as well as empirical evaluations under the lens of the Centroidal Inertia Isotropy (CII) design metric. Lastly, we experimentally validate our design and controller by testing center of mass (CoM) balancing, one-leg balancing, and stepping-in-place behaviors.

So Shiho Tang (SSHT) is a traditional herbal medicine commonly used in Asian countries. This study evaluated the anti-inflammatory effect of SSHT and the associated mechanism using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages and murine dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis models. Pre-treatment of RAW 264.7 macrophages with SSHT significantly reduced LPS-induced inflammation by decreasing nitrite production and regulating the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway. Meanwhile, in mice, DSS-induced colitis symptoms, including colon shortening and body weight loss, were attenuated by SSHT. Moreover, representative compounds of SSHT, including glycyrrhizic acid, ginsenoside Rb1, baicalin, saikosaponin A, and saikosaponin B2, were quantified, and their effects on nitrite production were measured. A potential anti-inflammatory effect was detected in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. Our findings suggest that SSHT is a promising anti-inflammatory agent. Its representative components, including saikosaponin B2, ginsenoside Rb1, and baicalin, may represent the key active compounds responsible for eliciting the anti-inflammatory effects and can, therefore, serve as quality control markers in SSHT preparations.

In this study, cellulose/Fe3O4 hydrogel microbeads were prepared through the sol–gel transition of a solvent-in-oil emulsion using various cellulose-dissolving solvents and soybean oil without surfactants. Particularly, 40% tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH) and 40% tetrabutylphosphonium hydroxide (TBPH) dissolved cellulose at room temperature and effectively dispersed Fe3O4, forming cellulose/Fe3O4 microbeads with an average diameter of ~15 µm. Additionally, these solvents co-dissolved cellulose and silk, allowing for the manufacture of cellulose/silk/Fe3O4 hydrogel microbeads with altered surface characteristics. Owing to the negatively charged surface characteristics, the adsorption capacity of the cellulose/silk/Fe3O4 microbeads for the cationic dye crystal violet was >10 times higher than that of the cellulose/Fe3O4 microbeads. When prepared with TBAH, the initial adsorption rate of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the cellulose/silk/Fe3O4 microbeads was 18.1 times higher than that on the cellulose/Fe3O4 microbeads. When preparing TBPH, the equilibrium adsorption capacity of the cellulose/silk/Fe3O4 microbeads for BSA (1.6 g/g) was 8.5 times higher than that of the cellulose/Fe3O4 microbeads. The pH-dependent BSA release from the cellulose/silk/Fe3O4 microbeads prepared with TBPH revealed 6.1-fold slower initial desorption rates and 5.2-fold lower desorption amounts at pH 2.2 than those at pH 7.4. Cytotoxicity tests on the cellulose and cellulose/silk composites regenerated with TBAH and TBPH yielded nontoxic results. Therefore, cellulose/silk/Fe3O4 microbeads are considered suitable pH-responsive supports for orally administered protein pharmaceuticals.

Climate change associated sea surface temperature rise could significantly affect the physiology, and consequently geographic distribution of seagrasses. Photosynthetic and respiratory responses of warm affinity Halophila nipponica and cold affinity Zostera marina to a change in water temperature (7–26°C) were investigated to estimate whole-plant carbon balance for prediction of the future geographic distributions of these seagrasses in the northwestern Pacific region. It was hypothesized that H. nipponica and Z. marina showed distinctly different patterns of carbon balance with changes in water temperature. Photosynthetic and respiratory rates of H. nipponica and Z. marina generally increased with increasing water temperature, except for Ic and Ik of H. nipponica and α of Z. marina. H. nipponica showed high Pmax and α values, which could support a greater respiratory demand related to the higher proportion of non-photosynthetic tissues (~67%), compared with Z. marina (~34%). The whole-plant carbon balance of Z. marina remained positive throughout the experiment, although it decreased to nearly zero during the high water-temperature period. H. nipponica exhibited a negative carbon balance during winter and early spring, which corresponded with severely limited growth at water temperatures< 15°C. These results suggest that increases in water temperature, particularly during winter, in relation to continuous climate change, could induce substantial changes in the seagrass ecosystem structure and corresponding changes in coastal ecosystem services in the temperate coastal waters of the northwestern Pacific region. The results of this study will provide valuable information on the effective management and conservation of coastal and estuarine ecosystems under ongoing climate change.

Residual antibiotics may affect human health by increasing challenges related to infection treatment due to antibiotic resistance development. Hence, determining whether residual antibiotics in the body can lead to antibiotic resistance is important. We developed a model to predict possible antibiotic resistance caused by residual antibiotics by simulating human digestion in vitro. Increased antibiotic resistance was found to be dependent on the digestion process. Ethical prediction of antibiotic resistance using fewer animals and no humans was possible by simulating the internal environment. Thus, preliminary studies to monitor antibiotic resistance that can affect human health may be safely conducted using this model.

Background/Aims: Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) plays a central role in cellular defense against inflammatory insults, and its induction in macrophages potentiates their efferocytic activity. In this study, we explored the potential role of macrophage HO-1 in the resolution of experimentally induced colitis. Methods: To induce colitis, male C57BL/6 mice were treated with 2% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in the drinking water for 7 days. To investigate efferocytosis, apoptotic colon epithelial CCD 841 CoN cells were coincubated with bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs). Results: Administration of the HO-1 inhibitor zinc protoporphyrin IX (ZnPP) blunted the resolution of DSS-induced intestinal inflammation and expression of the proresolving M2 macrophage marker CD206. BMDMs treated with apoptotic colonic epithelial cells showed significantly elevated expression of HO-1 and its regulator Nrf2. Under the same experimental conditions, the proportion of CD206-expressing macrophages was also enhanced. ZnPP treatment abrogated the upregulation of CD206 expression in BMDMs engulfing apoptotic colonic epithelial cells. This result was verified with BMDMs isolated from HO-1-knockout mice. BMDMs, when stimulated with lipopolysaccharide, exhibited increased expression of CD86, a marker of M1 macrophages. Coculture of lipopolysaccharide-stimulated BMDMs with apoptotic colonic epithelial cell debris dampened the expression of CD86 as well as the pro-inflammatory cytokines in an HO-1-dependent manner. Genetic ablation as well as pharmacologic inhibition of HO-1 significantly reduced the proportion of efferocytic BMDMs expressing the scavenger receptor CD36. Conclusions: HO-1 plays a key role in the resolution of experimentally induced colitis by modulating the polarization of macrophages.

Objectives:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of spitting behavior on microbial public health in smoking areas. Through this investigation, bacterial concentration and spread of bacteria from the smoking areas were evaluated for the prospective public health and environment. Methods:The number of spitting and the spitting location in the smoking areas were measured visually by observers. For the microbial analysis, filter papers (5×5 cm) as sample collectors had been attached to the surface of the smoking areas for a given time. Using the collected filter paper, ATP bioluminescence measurement (RLU), colony forming unit (CFU) were measured. For the estimation of spitting behaviors in the smoking area on the spread microorganisms, saliva containing filters were selected from the areas, and fluorescent powder (0.01 g/cm2) was added to the papers. After 4 hours, the papers around the smoking areas were collected and the fluorescence activity was measured. Results and Discussion:The results showed that there was a clear relationship between the spitting behavior and the microbial activity in the smoking areas. In the case of sampling area A, the highest number of spitting was observed at the lunch hour (102 ± 16 times), and the RLU from the sample collected near the smoking area showed about 5,139 ± 1,267 RLU. When the RLU around the smoking area was measured, the lowest values were found at distance of 11 and 17 m from the cigarette bin (1,329 ± 148 and 1,204 ± 203 RLU), and it was confirmed that smoking and spitting did not occur at this sampling points. In the case of sampling area B, the highest number of spitting (45 ± 6 times) was observed at evening hour, and the RLU from the sample collected near the smoking area showed about 5,274 ± 1,297 RLU. The lowest value was in the sampling area B shown at 11 and 18 m (1,181 ± 243 RLU and 1,148 ± 168 RLU) from the cigarette bin, and it was also confirmed that smoking and spitting did not occur at this sampling points. The results indicate that the spitting during the smoking induced the increases of the microbial contamination of the public environment. The fluorescence powder diffusion analysis indicated that the saliva on the ground surface would enhance the spread of the microorganisms from the smoking area. Conclusions:Spitting in smoking areas can pose a high risk of microbial infection for smokers and non-smokers in smoking areas. Thus extensive and systematic attention related to the smoking manner must be paid to protect our public health.

In the conventional experiment to assess the towing operations, the towing stability of the towed vessel has been evaluated under the condition without lateral motion of the tug-boat. However, the tug-boats may have a lateral force to change the direction of the towed vessel. In this study, experiments have been conducted considering unsteady conditions in the towing system. First, a towing test system in a Circular Water Channel (CWC) using the conventional experimental method is built. Second, the towing characteristics of the towed vessel are investigated using the conventional method, and they are compared with other research results and stability discriminant criteria. Third, the lateral motion of the tug-boat was modeled as a sinusoidal motion using a forced oscillation device changing frequency and amplitude. Finally, the discussion is given in terms of both towing- and course-stability of the towed vessel according to the lateral motion of the tug-boat.

Blended biopolymer-based photocatalytic hydrogel beads were synthesized by dissolving the biopolymers in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim][Ac]), adding TiO2, and reconstituting the beads with ethanol. The incorporation of modifying biopolymer significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of the cellulose/TiO2 beads. Cellulose/carrageenan/TiO2 beads exhibited a 7.0-fold increase in adsorption capacity for methylene blue (MB). In contrast, cellulose/chitosan/TiO2 beads showed a 4.8-fold increase in adsorption capacity for methyl orange (MO) compared with cellulose/TiO2 beads. In addition, cellulose/TiO2 microbeads were prepared through the sol–gel transition of the [Emim][Ac]-in-oil emulsion to enhance photodegradation activity. These microbeads displayed a 4.6-fold higher adsorption capacity and 2.8-fold higher photodegradation activity for MB than the millimeter-sized beads. Furthermore, they exhibited superior dye removal efficiencies for various dyes such as Congo red, MO, MB, crystal violet, and rhodamine B, surpassing the performance of larger beads. To expand the industrial applicability of the microbeads, biopolymer/TiO2 magnetic microbeads were developed by incorporating Fe2O3. These magnetic microbeads outperformed millimeter-sized beads regarding the efficiency and time required for MB removal from aqueous solutions. Furthermore, the physicochemical properties of magnetic microbeads can be easily controlled by adjusting the type of biopolymer modifier, the TiO2 and magnetic particle content, and the ratio of each component based on the target molecule. Therefore, biopolymer-based photocatalytic magnetic microbeads have great potential not only in environmental fields but also in biomedical fields.

Abstract We demonstrate a novel, flexible sensor with graphene oxide/PEDOT:PSS (GO/PEDOT:PSS) composite for voltammetric determination of selective low levels of dopamine. The well-distributed GO and EDOT:PSS suspension in water were deposited simply and polymerized. Consequently, the EDOT:PSS provided a strong interaction between GO and PEDOT:PSS, and it also had well-tailored interfacial properties that allowed the highly selective and sensitive determination of DA. Since the interfacial net charge is well-constructed, the sensor satisfies both the requirements of selectivity and the highly sensitive detection of low amounts of DA. In the results, the sensor with the GO/PEDOT:PSS composite exhibited a low interfacial impedance of about 281.46 ± 30.95 Ω at 100 Hz and a high charge storage capacity (53.94 ± 1.08 µC/cm2) for the detection of dopamine. In addition, the interference from ascorbic acid was reduced effectively to a minimum by electrostatic charge repelling of the AA and the distinct difference for the oxidation peak of the UA. Due to the fact that the GO/PEDOT:PSS composite had a net negative charge and, enhanced interfacial properties, the sensor showed a dopamine detection limit of 0.008 μM and a sensitivity of 69.3 µA/µMcm2.

Because sexual reproduction is essential for the establishment and persistence of seagrass meadows, flowering intensity is an important trait that influences the resilience and stability of seagrass populations. Although the effects of excessive coastal nutrient loading on seagrass vegetative growth have been extensively documented, the effects on seagrass reproductive phenology and intensity remain unclear. To examine the reproductive responses of seagrass populations to increased coastal nutrient loading, the flowering phenology and intensity of Zostera marina were compared between sites with high-nutrient, low-light conditions (Deukryang Bay and Dongdae Bay) and low-nutrient, high-light conditions (Koje Bay) on the southern coast of Korea. Nutrient contents of the above- and below-ground tissues of Z. marina reflected in situ nutrient and light availability at the study sites. Reproductive shoot density and biomass, as well as flowering frequency and reproductive effort, were much higher (1.5–4.6-fold) at the high-nutrient, low-light study sites of Deukryang Bay and Dongdae Bay than at the low-nutrient, high-light site of Koje Bay. Consequently, potential seed production was higher in Deukryang Bay and Dongdae Bay than in Koje Bay. Chronic high-nutrient and low-light conditions significantly increased the reproductive intensity of Z. marina, supporting the persistence and resilience of Z. marina populations. The results of this study could provide insights into the conservation and management of seagrass meadows under increased coastal nutrient loading.

Chemotherapy is commonly used as a major therapeutic option for breast cancer treatment, but its efficacy is often diminished by disruption of patient’s anti-tumor immunity. Chemotherapy-generated tumor cell debris could hijack accumulated tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), provoking tumor recurrence. Therefore, reprogramming TAMs to acquire an immunocompetent phenotype is a promising strategy to potentiate therapeutic efficacy. In this study, we analyzed the proportion of immune cells in the breast cancer patients who received chemotherapy. To validate our findings in vivo, we used a syngeneic murine breast cancer (4T1) model. Chemotherapy generates an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment in breast cancer. Here, we show that phagocytic engulfment of tumor cell debris by TAMs reduces chemotherapeutic efficacy in a 4T1 breast cancer model. Specifically, the engulfment of tumor cell debris by macrophages reduced M1-like polarization through heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) upregulation. Conversely, genetic or pharmacologic inhibition of HO-1 in TAMs restored the M1-like polarization. Our results demonstrate that tumor cell debris-induced HO-1 expression in macrophages regulates their polarization. Inhibition of HO-1 overexpression in TAMs may provoke a robust anti-tumor immune response, thereby potentiating the efficacy of chemotherapy.

Perovskite nanocrystals are promising emitters but suffer from environmental instabilities. Here, Park et al. introduce aromatic nonpolar organogels as a soft passivating matrix of perovskites, demonstrating highly efficient and environmentally stable luminescent nanocomposites.

The adverse effects of UV (ultraviolet) radiation on polymeric materials and organic constituents can damage the molecular structure of human skin and polymeric materials, resulting in their degradation. Therefore, additives or reagents for UV-shielding must be used in related applications, including polymer compounds and skin cosmetics. Bio-based polymers have shown great potential as alternatives to conventional metallic and organic materials (e.g., TiO2 and ZnO) in various applications; therefore, natural products have gained attention as a potential resource to overcome UV-induced health and environmental problems. In particular, biomass-derived materials such as lignin, fiber, and silica have been investigated as UV-shielding materials owing to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low carbon emissions. In this review, the UV-shielding effect and potential of various biomass-derived materials, such as silica, nanocellulose, and fibers, are reviewed. Among them, lignin is considered a promising UV-shielding material because of the presence of chromophores and functional groups capable of absorbing UV radiation of all ranges.

This paper proposes an online gain adaptation approach to enhance the robustness of whole-body control (WBC) framework for legged robots under unknown external force disturbances. Without properly accounting for external forces, the closed-loop control system incorporating WBC may become unstable, and therefore the desired task goals may not be achievable. To study the effects of external disturbances, we analyze the behavior of our current WBC framework via the use of both full-body and centroidal dynamics. In turn, we propose a way to adapt feedback gains for stabilizing the controlled system automatically. Based on model approximations and stability theory, we propose three conditions to ensure that the adjusted gains are suitable for stabilizing a robot under WBC. The proposed approach has four contributions. We make it possible to estimate the unknown disturbances without force/torque sensors. We then compute adaptive gains based on theoretic stability analysis incorporating the unknown forces at the joint actuation level. We demonstrate that the proposed method reduces task tracking errors under the effect of external forces on the robot. In addition, the proposed method is easy-to-use without further modifications of the controllers and task specifications. The resulting gain adaptation process is able to run in real-time. Finally, we verify the effectiveness of our method both in simulations and experiments using the bipedal robot Draco2 and the humanoid robot Valkyrie.

Scientific regulatory systems with suitable analytical methods for monitoring quality, safety, and efficacy are essential in medicinal plant drug discovery. There have been only few attempts to adopt the analytical quality by design (AQbD) strategy in medicinal plants analysis over the last few years. AQbD is a holistic method and development approach that understands analytical procedure, from risk assessment to lifecycle management. The enhanced AQbD approach reduces the time and effort necessary to develop reliable analytical methods, leads to flexible change control through the method operable design region (MODR), and lowers the out-of-specification (OOS) results. However, it is difficult to follow all the AQbD workflow steps in the field of medicinal plants analysis, such as defining the analytical target profiles (ATPs), identifying critical analytical procedure parameters (CAPPs), among others, because the complexity of chemical and biological properties in medicinal plants acts as a barrier. In this review, various applications of AQbD to medicinal plant analytical procedures are discussed. Unlike the analysis of a single compound, medicinal plant analysis is characterized by analyzing multiple components contained in biological materials, so it will be summarized by focusing on the following points: Analytical methods showing correlations within analysis parameters for the specific medicinal plant analysis, plant raw material diversity, one or more analysis targets defined for multiple phytochemicals, key analysis attributes, and analysis control strategies. In addition, the opportunities available through the use of design-based quality management techniques and the challenges that coexist are also discussed.

We propose a locomotion framework for bipedal robots consisting of a new motion planning method, dubbed trajectory optimization for walking robots plus (TOWR+), and a new whole-body control method, dubbed implicit hierarchical whole-body controller (IHWBC). For versatility, we consider the use of a composite rigid body (CRB) model to optimize the robot’s walking behavior. The proposed CRB model considers the floating base dynamics while accounting for the effects of the heavy distal mass of humanoids using a pre-trained centroidal inertia network. TOWR+ leverages the phase-based parameterization of its precursor, TOWR, and optimizes for base and end-effectors motions, feet contact wrenches, as well as contact timing and locations without the need to solve a complementary problem or integer program. The use of IHWBC enforces unilateral contact constraints (i.e., non-slip and non-penetration constraints) and a task hierarchy through the cost function, relaxing contact constraints and providing an implicit hierarchy between tasks. This controller provides additional flexibility and smooth task and contact transitions as applied to our 10 degree-of-freedom, line-feet biped robot DRACO. In addition, we introduce a new open-source and light-weight software architecture, dubbed planning and control (PnC), that implements and combines TOWR+ and IHWBC. PnC provides modularity, versatility, and scalability so that the provided modules can be interchanged with other motion planners and whole-body controllers and tested in an end-to-end manner. In the experimental section, we first analyze the performance of TOWR+ using various bipeds. We then demonstrate balancing behaviors on the DRACO hardware using the proposed IHWBC method. Finally, we integrate TOWR+ and IHWBC and demonstrate step-and-stop behaviors on the DRACO hardware.

Afatinib, a second-generation, irreversible pan-HER inhibitor, shows better suppression of T790M-positive lung cancer cells than gefitinib in preclinical studies. However, whether the effect of afatinib on T790M acquisition differs from that of gefitinib when used clinically as first-line therapy remains unclear. To reaffirm the preclinical efficacy of afatinib on T790M-positive lung cancer cells, H1975 cells and established PC-9 cells resistant to gefitinib and erlotinib by T790M were used. In total, 398 patients with second biopsy at progression with stage IIIB/IV non–small cell lung cancer with EGFR mutation, treated with afatinib or gefitinib as first-line therapy, were retrospectively reviewed. Propensity score matching was used to balance covariates. Afatinib inhibited the growth of lung cancer cells with low T790M allele frequencies, which are resistant to gefitinib, but not those with high T790M allele frequencies. Afatinib and gefitinib showed similar efficacy in terms of progression-free survival (PFS) (11.5 vs 13.4 months, P = .08) and overall survival (OS) (29.3 vs 28.5 months, P = .76). T790M patients had better PFS and OS than those without T790M. There was no significant difference in the cumulative T790M acquisition ratio over time between afatinib and gefitinib (48.8% vs 59.3%, P = .317). The median time to acquire T790M was 12.9 months for afatinib and 15.7 months for gefitinib (P = .342). Although afatinib inhibited the growth of lung cancer cells with low T790M allele frequencies in preclinical studies, this could not be translated into clinical efficacy in terms of lowering the rate or delaying the time of T790M acquisition.

Purpose High self-awareness can promote communication and empathy. The Enneagram is a well-known personality tool to enhance self-awareness. We evaluated differences in empathy among medical students using the Enneagram typology. Methods This cross-sectional study included first and second grade students at the Inje University College of Medicine. The Jefferson Scale of Empathy was used to measure empathy and the Korean Enneagram Personality Type Indicator was used for examining personality characteristics. Empathy scores were analyzed according to the Triads, Hornevian group, Harmonic group, and each Enneagram type. Results The Instinctive triad, the Withdrawns, and the Positive outlook group were the most common, and the Feeling triad, the Assertives, and the Emotional realness group were the least common. Students in the Feeling triad and the Dutifuls had higher compassionate care (CC) scores as compared to their counterparts. Type 2 and 6 students showed the two highest empathy and CC scores. The empathy score of type 3 students was the lowest. Type 7 had the lowest CC score but the highest perspective taking score. Conclusion These differences in empathy according to Enneagram personality types can be applied to medical education to maintain and improve medical students’ empathy.

At present, due to the use of manual, rather than automated measurements, the inspection for building occupancy authorization lacks objectivity. Seeking to improve this situation, in this study, we used unmanned aerial vehicle for automated inspection for building occupancy authorization. Theoretical considerations about building occupancy authorization and the trend of UAV technology were accomplished. Furthermore, reverse engineering, including digital photography, network RTK-VRS surveying, and post-processing data, was conducted. The obtained spatial information was used for building occupancy inspection authorization in a BIM platform, and the effectiveness and applicability of UAV-based inspection was analyzed. The results of this study demonstrate that UAV-based automated inspection can reduce error rate in on-site measurement, conduct complete enumeration survey of the entire range of building, and collect data ensuring objectivity of the inspection due to authentic accuracy and effectiveness.

High-quality factor dielectric microcavities like whispering-gallery-mode resonators can be widely applied in fields such as laser, optical sensor, switch, and filter. We propose the whispering-gallery-mode double-disk cavity comprising dielectric disks apart along the face of the disk. The electric field of each disk with opposite phases was excited; the emitted radiation field was annihilated by destructive interference. We numerically achieved a 5.67-fold enhancement in quality factor at the double-disk cavity with a radius, thickness, and gap distance of 850 nm, 220 nm, and 220 nm, respectively, compared to a single dielectric disk with the same structural conditions.
