The use of Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW) for research and quality improvement has become more frequent in the last 10 years. In this study, we used CDW to determine the effectiveness of pressure ulcer interventions offered by ward nurses and wound care nursing specialists. A retrospective clinical outcomes study that utilise CDW has been carried out. We identified 1415 patients who were evaluated as pressure ulcer risk group from 1 July 2019 to 31 December 2019. Kaplan-Meier survival analyses were used to estimate the time to occurrence of pressure ulcers. We compared the survival curves of each group by applying the log-rank test for significance. The overall median time to occurrence for both groups was 13 days (95% CI range: 11-14 days). The control group showed a longer median time (14 days) to occurrence than the case group (12 days). In the pressure ulcer stage I, the case group showed a longer median time (14 days) to occurrence than the control group (8 days), indicating that the intervention provided by the wound care nursing specialist was effective in stage I, and delayed the occurrence of pressure ulcers. The findings may be used as preliminary data for the utilisation of the CDW in the field of nursing research in the future. Also, facilitating the accessibility of the wound care nursing specialist in the general wards should be effective to decrease the incidence rates.

BACKGROUND: Recent clinical studies have revealed the advantages of using suspension devices. Although the supine, lateral, and forward leaning bridge exercises are low-intensity exercises with suspension devices, there is a lack of studies directly comparing exercise progression by measuring muscular activity and subjective difficulty. OBJECTIVE: To identify how the variations in the bridge exercise affects trunk muscle activity, the present study investigated changes in neuromuscular activation during low-intensity bridge exercises. We furthermore explored whether the height of the suspension point affects muscle activation and subjective difficulty. METHODS: Nineteen asymptomatic male participants were included. Three bridge exercise positions, supine bridge (SB), lateral bridge (LB), forward leaning (FL), and two exercise angles (15 and 30 degrees) were administered, thereby comparing six bridge exercise conditions with suspension devices. Surface electromyography and subjective difficulty data were collected. RESULTS: The rectus abdominis activity was significantly higher with the LB and FL exercises compared with the SB exercise (p< 0.05). The erector spinae muscle activity was significantly higher with the SB and LB exercises, compared with the FL exercise (p< 0.05). The LB exercise significantly increased the internal oblique muscle activity, compared with other exercise variations (p< 0.05). The inclination angle of the exercise only affected the internal oblique muscle and subjective difficulty, which were significantly higher at 30 degrees compared with 15 degrees (p< 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Relatively higher inclination angle was not effective in overall activation of the trunk muscles; however, different bridge-type exercises could selectively activate the trunk muscles. The LB and SB exercises could be good options for stimulating the internal oblique abdominis, and the erector spinae muscle, while the FL exercise could minimize the erector spinae activity and activate the abdominal muscles.

Malnutrition is common in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) and is associated with mortality. This study aimed to investigate the association between changes in nutrition status measured by the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and all-cause mortality in patients who started HD. A nationwide retrospective cohort study was conducted based on the Korean Renal Data System database. Patients who started HD from January 2016 to December 2018, and were eligible for GNRI and GNRI trend were included. GNRI trend was a longitudinal change of GNRI, assessed by random slope in a mixed-effect model. Positive and negative random slopes in each patient were assigned to positive and negative GNRI trends. A total of 2313 patients were included and median follow-up period was 3.1 (2.6–3.7) years. GNRI values decreased over time (estimate − 1.212, 95% confidence interval (CI) − 1.116–0.692) and positive GNRI trend was associated with survival benefit (hazard ratio 0.55, 95% CI 0.36–0.84) after multivariate adjustment. These findings show that serial GNRI assessment, besides GNRI, is a useful prognostic factor for mortality in patients who start HD.

One form of abnormal scapular alignment is scapular downward rotation (SDR). Changes in muscle function in SDR have not been clearly identified, and SDR exercises also require investigation. Although a diagonal pattern of exercise is commonly used as part of the exercise protocol, a direct comparison of shoulder and scapular diagonal exercises has not yet been conducted. The objectives of this study were to determine the altered activation of the scapular musculature in the SDR group and to investigate which diagonal pattern of exercise effectively activates the scapular musculature.Thirty-two participants (18 in the control group and 14 in the SDR group) volunteered to participate in this study. Electromyographic signals were collected from four muscles, the upper trapezius (UT), lower trapezius (LT), serratus anterior (SA), and anterior deltoid (AD), during standing performance of diagonal shoulder and scapular exercises.The control group showed significantly lower UT activity, UT/LT ratio, and UT/SA values than the SDR group (p .05). Activation of the AD was significantly higher in the SDR than in the control group (p .05). SA and AD activation were significantly higher in shoulder diagonal pattern exercises than in scapular diagonal pattern exercises (p .05). The scapular posterior elevation pattern exercise showed significantly higher UT and LT activities than anterior elevation and shoulder diagonal pattern exercises (p .05).Our findings suggest that reduced activation of the UT could lead to greater activation in the AD in SDR. Scapular posterior elevation exercise is advantageous as selectively activates the trapezius musculature, and shoulder diagonal pattern exercise is advantageous in activating the SA and AD.

To construct an efficient electrocatalyst for HER, the high binding energy of MXene must be mitigated through electronic modulation of active sites. Here, we propose atomic Pt substitution in V2CTx MXene to modulate the electronic structure and promote catalytic activity toward HER. Pt–V2CTx exhibits high HER performance with a low overpotential of 27 mV at –10 mA cm-2 in acidic media, comparable to the commercial Pt/C catalyst. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and DFT calculations indicate that the Pt atoms are efficiently confined to the V vacancy sites of V2CTx, accompanied by a unique electronic structure. The atomic substitution of Pt with higher occupied d states at the Fermi energy of Pt and surface oxygen sites can significantly indicate an optimum hydrogen-binding free energy (∆GH*), promoting HER performance. This work introduces further prospects for developing efficient electrocatalysts by feasible electronic regulation and highly improved catalytic activity through rational atomic engineering.

There was lack of study which evaluated the effects of characteristics of subjects such as the body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference (WC), as well as sexual differences on trunk muscle activities. The purpose of the present study was to compare the abdominal muscle activities among the groups dividing criterion as the BMI, WC, and the gender. As a criterion of BMI and WC, subjects were arranged to three groups. Female subjects who were less than 25 kg/m2 BMI, and less than 90 WC were arranged as female with underweight group (FU), male subjects who were greater than 25 kg/m2 BMI and greater than 85 WC were arranged as male with overweight group (MO), male subjects who were less than 25 kg/m2 BMI and less than 85 WC were arranged in male with underweight group (MU). Organic polymer-based dielectrics with intrinsic mechanical flexibility and good processability are excellent candidates for the dielectric layer of flexible electronics. These polymer films can become even more rigid and electrically robust when modified through cross-linking processes. Moreover, the composites formed by dispersing nanoscale inorganic fillers in a polymer matrix can exhibit further improved polarization property. However, these strategies can be challenging as homogeneous dispersion of nanomaterials in the matrix is difficult to achieve; thus, degradation of electrically insulating properties of nanocomposite layers is often observed. Here, a high-k, pinhole-free, and flexible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based nanocomposite dielectric is presented, incorporating 2D TiO2 nanosheets (NSs) for the first time. Despite the attractive dielectric constant, exceptional flexibility, and electrically insulating property of PVA-TiO2 nanocomposites, only few studies on these materials have been reported. The organic/inorganic nanosheet hybrid layer, which reaches an unprecedentedly high dielectric constant of 43.8 (more than four times higher than that of cross-linked PVA), also exhibits an outstanding leakage current density as low as 10-9 A cm-2 . Furthermore, the repeated bending tests for nanocomposite capacitors reveal their capability of operating without any deterioration of their performances even after 1000 iterations of bending cycles at a bending radius of 3 mm.

BACKGROUND: Problems related to ankle instability, decreased proprioceptive sensation, altered static and dynamic balance abilities are suggested as major representative factors that contribute to the recurrence of ankle sprains. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of a three-week intervention (intervention emphasizing diagonal eccentric contraction (IEDEC) and intervention of general exercise (IGE)) on static and dynamic balance abilities, ankle strength and joint position sense at pre- and post-intervention, and at two- and three-week post-intervention. METHODS: Twenty-five participants with ankle instability, including a history of ankle sprain and recurrent episodes of giving way, were enrolled in the study. They were randomly classified into the IEDEC group (n= 12) and the IGE group (n= 13). Dynamic balance was examined using the Y Balance Test, four-way ankle strength was measured, and the static balance was evaluated using the total displacement of the center of pressure (COP). To identify the joint position error, eversion and inversion of the ankle angle were measured. RESULTS: The results revealed significant increases in ankle dynamic stability and strength at two and three weeks post-intervention (p< 0.05). Similarly, the total displacement of the COP differed significantly over time, with a higher COP during the initial measurement than at two and three weeks intervention (p< 0.05) General balance training with IEDEC can improve position sense during ankle inversion (p< 0.05). CONCLUSION: General balance training with IEDEC improved the position sense of the inversion. Combined therapeutic intervention, such as with the manual technique, could be a beneficial approach to maximize the treatment effects.

The aza-Prins reaction of allylic imines triggered by N-2,2,2-trifluoroethylisatin ketimine is accomplished for the synthesis of spirooxindole derivatives involving trifluoromethyl group in the presence of TMSX. This cyclization reaction is operationally simple and proceeds under mild conditions using non-toxic reagents. Notably, while the previous our work could not be compatible with TMSX (X = Cl, I, etc) in one-pot process, this work describes successful aza-Prins reaction with TMSX (X = Cl, I, etc) via step-by-step process.

Mixed lineage kinase domain-like (MLKL) is an essential molecule of necroptosis, a cell death process that is initiated by direct disruption of the plasma membrane. During necroptosis, MLKL is phosphorylated by receptor interacting protein kinase-3 (RIPK3 or RIP3), and then translocates to the plasma membrane to disrupt membrane integrity. Recent data suggest that MLKL also has a RIP3-indendent function in the generation of intraluminal and extracellular vesicles (EVs), as well as in myelin sheath breakdown when promoting sciatic nerve regeneration. Here we show that depletion of MLKL enhances TRAIL-induced cell death in a RIP3-independent manner. Depletion of MLKL leads to prolonged cytotoxic signals that increase TRAIL-induced cell death. Initially, TRAIL binds to DR5 at the cell surface and is endocytosed at similar rates in MLKL-expressing and MLKL-depleted cells, eventual degradation of intracellular TRAIL by the lysosome is delayed in MLKL-depleted cells, corresponding with prolonged/enhanced intracellular signals such as p-ERK and p-p38 in these cells. Colocalization of TRAIL with the marker of early endosomes, EEA1 suggests that TRAIL is accumulated in early endosomes in MLKL-depleted cells compared to MLKL-expressing cells. This indicates that depletion of MLKL reduces receptor-ligand endosomal trafficking leading to increased TRAIL-cytotoxicity. An MLKL mutant that compromises its necroptotic function and its function in the generation of EVs was sufficient to rescue MLKL deficiency, suggesting that the N-terminal structural elements necessary for these functions are not required for the function of MLKL in the intracellular trafficking associated with regulating death receptor cytotoxicity. A reduction in MLKL expression in cancer cells would therefore be expected to result in enhanced TRAIL-induced therapeutic efficacy.

Necroptosis is a type of programmed cell death that usually occurs under apoptosis-deficient conditions. Receptor-interacting protein kinase-3 (RIP3, or RIPK3) is a central player in necroptosis, and its kinase activity is essential for downstream necroptotic signaling events. Since RIP3 kinase activity has been associated with various diseases, the development of specific RIP3 inhibitors is an attractive strategy for therapeutic application. In this study, we identified a potent RIP3 inhibitor, HS-1371, by the extensive screening of chemical libraries focused on kinases. HS-1371 directly binds to RIP3 in an ATP-competitive and time-independent manner, providing a mechanism of action. Moreover, the compound inhibited TNF-induced necroptosis but did not inhibit TNF-induced apoptosis, indicating that this novel inhibitor has a specific inhibitory effect on RIP3-mediated necroptosis via the suppression of RIP3 kinase activity. Our results suggest that HS-1371 could serve as a potential preventive or therapeutic agent for diseases involving RIP3 hyperactivation., Cell death: Blocking the self-destruct mechanism Researchers have identified a compound that inhibits necroptosis, a type of programmed cell death that occurs naturally but that can be harmful when overactivated. Necroptosis helps defend against disease, triggering virus-infected cells to self-destruct; however, hyperactivation of the mechanism is associated with inflammatory disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease. Triggering necroptosis requires a protein named RIP3, and Han-Hee Park at Ajou University, Suwon, South Korea and coworkers screened extensive chemical libraries to identify compounds that inhibit RIP3. They identified four compounds, and further testing showed that one, named HS-1371, strongly and specifically inhibited necroptosis in cells. HS-1371 could inhibit necroptosis even after the process had already begun, greatly broadening its therapeutic applications. HS-1371 may also help in treating other conditions that involve hyperactivation of necroptosis, including sepsis and multiple sclerosis.

This study investigated potential for foot dysfunction and plantar fasciitis according to the shape of the foot arch in young adults. Fifty-two participants were required for the present study design to achieve 80% power, 0.8 effect size (η2), and an alpha level of 0.05. This study recruited 52 young adults (30 men and 22 women). All participants voluntarily agreed to participate in the study after hearing explanations about the purpose and process of the study. They were divided into two groups of 26 according to the shape of foot with and without flat foot using the navicular drop test. The participants were measured the foot function index (FFI), range of motion (ROM) of ankle, and four-way ankle strength. Additionally, the thickness of the plantar fascia was measured using ultrasonography. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to verify the inter- and intrarater reliability of ultrasonography. The inter- and intrarater reliability was excellent (ICC2,1=0.88, ICC3,1=0.93). There were significant differences in dorsi-flexion of ankle ROM, FFI, dorsi-flexion and eversion of ankle strength, and the thickness of the plantar fascia between the two groups (P

Recent studies have indicated that applying different breathing pattern and changes of extremity positions could be a useful way of performing challenging exercises that include coactivation of the abdominal muscles. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of changes of breathing pattern and hip position on abdominal muscle activity during curl-up exercises. Surface electromyography responses of the rectus abdominis (RA), internal oblique (IO), external oblique (EO) muscles and rectus femoris (RF), and Borg rating of perceived exertion (Borg RPE) score were investigated during the curl up exercises. A total of 20 healthy, physically active male volunteers completed two hip positions (45° and 90° hip flexion) and three breath types (slow expiration, maximal inspiration, and maximal expiration) for curl-up variations. The curl-up with 90° of hip flexion significantly increased the muscular activities of IO, EO, RF, and Borg RPE score (P0.05). The present study showed both the hip position and breathing pattern affect abdominal muscle activities during the curl-up exercise, especially of the oblique muscles. Among the breathing patterns investigated herein, the curl-up with maximum expiration produced greater activation of the oblique muscles compared to slow expiration and maximum inspiration.

BACKGROUND The concept of the effect-site concentration of anesthetic agents is important. The effect compartment model can be explained using the concepts of effect-site concentration and effect-site equilibration rate constant (ke0). This study confirms that the time-to-peak effect (tpe ) can be measured easily in clinical practice by applying a priming dose and train-of-four (TOF) during general anesthesia induction, and ke0 can be calculated from the tpe of the four muscle relaxants that are commonly used in general anesthesia. METHODS Eighty patients who received general anesthesia were divided into the succinylcholine, rocuronium, atracurium, or vecuronium groups. Priming doses of muscle relaxants were administered. The effects of muscle relaxants were quantified by recording the twitch response of the adductor pollicis muscle after stimulating the ulnar nerve. The tpe was measured at the lowest TOF value. ke0 was calculated from the measured tpe . RESULTS The ke0 values of the succinylcholine, rocuronium, atracurium, and vecuronium groups were 0.076 (0.030)/min, 0.228 (0.122)/min, 0.062 (0.011)/min, and 0.077 (0.019)/min, respectively. CONCLUSIONS It is possible to estimate ke0 from the tpe of muscle relaxants using a priming dose and TOF during general anesthesia induction.

Resolution of inflammation is an active process that leads to tissue homeostasis and involves multiple cellular and molecular mechanisms. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) have recently emerged as important cellular components in the resolution of inflammation because of their activities to suppress T cell activation. In this article, we show that HLA-DR−CD11b+CD33+CD14+ human MDSCs and CD11b+Ly6G−Ly6C+ mouse MDSCs markedly increased in patients and mice during and before the resolution phase of autoimmune uveoretinitis. CD11b+Ly6C+ monocytes isolated from autoimmune uveoretinitis mice were able to suppress T cell proliferation in culture, and adoptive transfer of the cells accelerated the remission of autoimmune uveoretinitis in mice. Alternatively, depletion of CD11b+Ly6C+ monocytes at the resolution phase, but not CD11b+Ly6G+ granulocytes, exacerbated the disease. These findings collectively indicate that monocytic MDSCs serve as regulatory cells mediating the resolution of autoimmune uveoretinitis.

The cornea is a transparent tissue devoid of blood and lymphatic vessels. However, various inflammatory conditions can cause hemangiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in the cornea, compromising transparency and visual acuity. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) have therapeutic potentials in a variety of diseases because of anti-inflammatory properties. Herein, we investigated the effects of MSCs on corneal angiogenesis using a model of suture-induced inflammatory corneal neovascularization. Data demonstrated that an intravenous administration of MSCs suppressed corneal inflammation and neovascularization, inhibiting both hemangiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. MSCs reduced the levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-C, VEGF-D, Tek, MRC1, and MRC2 in the cornea, which are expressed by pro-angiogenic macrophages. Moreover, the number of CD11b+ monocytes/macrophages in the cornea, spleen, peripheral blood, and draining lymph nodes was decreased by MSCs. Depletion of circulating CD11b+ monocytes by blocking antibodies replicated the effects of MSCs. Importantly, knockdown of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)-stimulated gene/protein 6 (TSG-6) in MSCs abrogated the effects of MSCs in inhibiting corneal hemangiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis and monocyte/macrophage infiltration. Together, the results suggest that MSCs inhibit inflammatory neovascularization in the cornea by suppressing pro-angiogenic monocyte/macrophage recruitment in a TSG-6-dependent manner.

Organic–inorganic hybrid dielectrics composed of nanoscale ceramic fillers in polymer matrices have attracted considerable attention because they can overcome the inherent limitations such as the low dielectric constant, high dielectric loss, and low film density associated with mechanically flexible pristine polymer materials. Barium titanate (BaTiO3), a representative perovskite-based material with a high permittivity, is suitable for applications as nanofillers in nanocomposite dielectrics. X-ray diffraction combined with Raman analysis suggest that a two-step hydrothermal synthesis, which uses synthesized TiO2 nanosheets as a template, is an effective method for the synthesis of pure BaTiO3 nanoparticles compared with other methods. Ultrasonic treatment is employed to disperse BaTiO3 nanoparticles with different concentrations in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer, and the dielectric performance of the nanocomposite films has been examined. In this study, 20 wt% BaTiO3–PVA nanocomposite dielectric showed superior capacitance and dielectric constant performance, i.e. five times higher than that of the pristine PVA.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment option for skin cancer and premalignant skin diseases and exhibits rejuvenation effects, including reducing fine wrinkles and whitening, on aged skin. In this study, we investigated the mechanism underlying the whitening effects of PDT on melanocytes (MCs) in vitro and in vivo. Exposure of MCs to PDT in vitro reduced their melanin content and tyrosinase activity without, however, affecting cell survival. Interestingly, melanogenesis was also inhibited by exposing MCs to conditioned media of PDT-treated keratinocytes or dermal fibroblasts. This paracrine effect was likely due to a decreased release of melanocyte-stimulating cytokines such as Kit ligand and hepatocyte growth factor from these cells. Furthermore, we observed that PDT reduced mottled hyperpigmentation of photoaged patient skin in vivo, highlighting the clinical importance of skin whitening by PDT.

The purpose of this study was to identify the instability of the trunk and the pelvis of subjects who were standing on differently angled ramps under conditions in which the ramps were crossed. Changes in the trunk and the pelvis while each subject was standing on one leg in the direction of the cross ramps at four angles (0°, 5°, 10°, and 15°) were measured. To identify instability, the trunk inclination, trunk imbalance, pelvic position, pelvic rotation, and pelvic torsion of 20 healthy male subjects were measured. The measurement was conducted using a three-dimensional spinal diagnostic imaging system (Back Mapper). According to the results of the measurement, trunk imbalance, pelvic position, pelvic rotation, and pelvic torsion differed between the medial and lateral ramps and with different ramp angles. This study's results suggested that different mediolateral ramp conditions altered the pelvic and trunk alignment. With the 15° ramp, the anterior tilt and lateral tilt of the pelvis increased regardless of ramp direction. The 10° ramp condition altered the pelvic rotation to the contralateral side. In addition, the lateral trunk tilt was elevated with the lateral down foot condition.

However, the immunosuppressive microenvironment allows tumor cells to evade immune surveillance, whereas maintenance of inflammation is required for tumor development and progression. Hence, MSCs may promote or suppress tumors in a context-dependent manner. We here investigated the effects of bone marrow-derived MSCs in a murine model of lacrimal gland B-cell lymphoma. Co-injection of MSCs with B lymphoma cells enhanced tumor growth in lacrimal glands without long-term engraftment. Of note, MSCs induced greater infiltration of immune and immune-regulatory cells near tumor: CD4 + cells, CD11b + cells, CD4 + Foxp3 + regulatory T cells and CD11b + Ly6C + Ly6G − myeloid-derived suppressor cells. Concurrently, there was up-regulation of immune-related molecules including TNF-α, IL-1β, TGF-β1, and arginase in glands treated with MSCs. Apoptosis in tumor was less severe in mice treated with MSCs compared to those without MSCs; however, MSCs did not directly inhibit apoptosis of B lymphoma cells in an in vitro co-culture. Together, data demonstrate that MSCs create immunosuppressive milieu by recruiting regulatory immune cells and promote B-cell lymphoma growth in lacrimal glands.

Summary Accumulating evidence shows that extracellular vesicles (EVs) produced by mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) exert their therapeutic effects in several disease models. We previously demonstrated that MSCs suppress autoimmunity in models of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU). Therefore, here, we investigated the therapeutic potential of MSC-derived EVs using our established mouse models for autoimmune diseases affecting the pancreas and the eye: T1D and EAU. The data demonstrate that MSC-derived EVs effectively prevent the onset of disease in both T1D and EAU. BACKGROUND Various forms of trunk exercise have been used for increasing abdominal strength. The plank exercise and bilateral leg raise exercise are one of these trunk exercises. However, there are few studies that compared the effects of these exercise variations. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to investigate how effectively the trunk muscles during plank and bilateral leg raise exercises are activated. METHOD Surface electromyography responses of the rectus abdominis, internal oblique, and erector spinae muscles were investigated during the plank and bilateral leg raise exercise with different hip position. A total of 18 healthy, physically active female volunteers completed the normal plank exercise, plank exercise with placing the lower leg in a horizontal condition, bilateral leg raise exercise, and bilateral leg raise with lower leg as horizontal condition. RESULTS The horizontal condition caused significant increases in activity of the internal oblique muscles compared with the general condition (p< 0.05). The bilateral leg raise exercise showed significantly greater activation in the rectus abdominis compared to the plank exercise (p< 0.05). CONCLUSION The present study showed that the horizontal condition had the advantage of activating the internal oblique muscles, and the leg raise exercise is effective in strengthening global muscle such as the rectus abdominis.

BACKGROUND Recent clinical research has supported the use of suspension devices in rehabilitation procedures both in practice and in theory. Although a longitudinal study has reported on the use of suspension devices among asymptomatic subjects, it is necessary to investigate the immediate effects of suspension exercises in patients with CLBP. OBJECTIVE The present study aims to investigate changes in neuromuscular activation after the prescription of suspension exercises in patients with CLBP. A secondary aim was to determine whether practical flexion and extension strength can be effectively enhanced. METHODS Before and after suspension exercise, flexion extension (FE) ratio and trunk strength of flexion and extension were measured. Patients performed two types of suspension exercises: supine bridge and forward leaning exercises. The paired t-test was used to compare the FE ratio and strength data. Pearson correlation coefficient was performed to study the correlation between measured variables. RESULTS Compared to the pre-exercise measurements, the flexion-extension ratio and trunk extension strength was significantly increased at the post-exercise measurement (p< 0.05). The FE ratio in the right lumbar erector spine muscle was significantly correlated with post-exercise trunk extension strength (p< 0.05). CONCLUSIONS For patients with chronic lower back pain, stimulation of the lumbar extensor muscle and of proprioception is effective both for strengthening lumbar extensors and for improving the flexion-extension ratio. Consequently, forward leaning and supine bridge exercises with a suspension device are beneficial for normalising neuromuscular control of the erector spinae muscles.

BACKGROUND A high prevalence and incidence of neck and shoulder pain are common problems that require more attention from health service providers and researchers. Recent findings have indicated that the neck stretching is the one of the most effective physical therapy interventions. Although the recovery of the pain through the stretching exercise has been described in a previous study, functional advantages and changes of the neuromuscular control has not been suggested. Additionally, there was a lack of studies that considered methods of stretching. OBJECTIVE The purpose of the present study was to examine the long-term effects of stretching methods for cervical neuromuscular dysfunction, disability and pain in a sample of sedentary workers with neck pain. METHODS Twenty-four sedentary workers with neck pain participated in this study and were assigned to the following two groups: static stretching (SS), and diagonal active stretching (DS). Active cervical range of motion (ROM), pressure pain threshold (PPT), self reported questionnaire (Neck Disability Index, NDI), and the flexion - relaxation ratio (FRR) from the cervical erector spinae muscles were measured at pre-treatment, post-treatment (after 4 weeks) and follow-up (after 6 and 8 weeks). RESULTS In both groups, the values obtained for the cervical ROM as flexion, extension, lateral flexion, were significantly increased in comparison to pre-treatment (p< 0.05). High demands for and rapid development of technologies related to the Internet of Things (IoT) call for a pertinent technological breakthrough in sensing devices to effectively detect various external stimuli or target analytes. Advanced sensing platforms utilizing thin-film transistors (TFTs) are essential for realizing cost-effective and high-performance chemical sensors. Here, it is reported that the utilization of a gas-selective layer based on polymeric chromatographic stationary phases is an unprecedented and facile method to establish simultaneously the desired gas selectivity and responsivity of ZnO thin films at room temperature. With the aid of computational studies, in-depth analysis and comparison of gas-sensing and the charge transfer mechanism between the gas and the resulting sensor devices are performed. ZnO with cyanopropylmethyl-phenylmethyl polysiloxane films provide excellent selective sensing with gas mixtures, and the achieved response to vaporized ethanol is nearly three times higher than the response of pristine ZnO at ~22 °C and atmospheric pressure. This effective enhancement of sensing performance under ambient conditions is attained through the transition from chemisorption to physisorption based on intermolecular interactions between gas molecules and gas-selective polymers. This work demonstrates a potent yet cost-effective method to fabricate low power consumption gas sensor systems based on metal oxide TFT.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is an extremely toxic gas frequently produced during the incineration of plastics, such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS). A victim of a fire who has inhaled smoke could have cyanide in the blood. Therefore, cyanide could be a good marker for a post-mortem examination of a fire as well as carboxyhemoglobine (COHb) test of blood samples. For a particular fire case, a burned body with a suicide note was found inside a burned vehicle. Even though the COHb value is conclusive evidence, measuring the COHb for denatured blood might be difficult due to severe thermal denaturation or the formation of methemoglobin (MetHb). To overcome this difficulty, cyanide could be used as an indicator when investigating the death of a fire victim. In this study, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was adopted to measure the levels of cyanide in the blood through derivatization with pentafluorobenzyl bromide (PFBBr) under cation surfactant by scan and SIM mode. Spontaneous regression of malignant tumors is rare especially of lung tumor and biological mechanism of such remission has not been addressed. We report the case of a 79-year-old Korean patient with non-small cell lung cancer, squamous cell cancer with a right hilar tumor and multiple lymph nodes, lung to lung metastasis that spontaneously regressed without any therapies. He has sustained partial remission state for one year and eight months after the first histological diagnosis.

We report a case of congenital grade 3 corneal choriostoma accompanied by anterior staphyloma. The tumor was excised by deep lamellar dissection, and the defect was filled with multilayer amniotic membranes. On histologic examination, the excised tumor contained demislike connective tissues, dermal adnexa (hair follicles and sebaceous gland), and adipose tissue, and was lined by keratinizing squamous epithelium. One month after surgery, the tumor recurred and progressively enlarged.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are the most widely used drugs to prevent transplant rejection; however, it is not yet clear how GCs induce immune tolerance in transplantation. Here, we demonstrate that GCs induce tolerance to corneal allografts in mice through expansion of MHC class II- CD11b+ Ly6C+ monocytes in the bone marrow and mobilization of the cells to spleen, draining lymph nodes, and graft site. The GC-induced CD11b+ Ly6C+ monocytes inhibited T cell proliferation in vitro, and adoptive transfer of the cells improved the survival of corneal allografts. Depletion of CD11b+ Ly6C+ cells in mice during GC treatment abrogated the effects of GCs in prevention of immune rejection. Together, the results identify monocytic myeloid-derived suppressor cells as crucial mediators of the GC-induced tolerance in transplantation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate changes of gait pattern, muscle activity, and perceived comfort in response to variations of height-elevating insoles (HEIs) in young adults. The subjects of this study were 30 young adults who voluntarily consented to participate in this experiment after listening to its purpose and method. They were di-vided into 3 groups who wore HEIs height (0, 3, and 7 cm). Each group consisted of 10 young adults and wore the HEIs for 4 hr a day. Electro-myographic signals were collected from the tibialis anterior, the gas-trocnemius, the hamstring, and the right and the left erector spinae (ES) before and after walking with the HEI. Gait pattern was measured be-fore and after walking with the HEI. Perceived comfort was measured after a subject wore the insoles for 4 hr. The activities of ES showed significant differences among the three groups. The activity of the left ES was significantly different between groups 1 (0 cm) and 2 (3 cm) and groups 1 and 3 (7 cm). The activity of the right ES was significantly dif-ferent between groups 1 and 3. The left stride length and the left step length showed significant differences between groups 1 and 3. Per-ceived comfort was significantly different among the three groups. As the HEIs increased, the activities of ES were gradually increased and the left step length and stride were decreased. Using of higher HEIs over 4 hr may be occurred excessive activities of the ES, abnormal gait patterns, and perceived discomfort.

Because there is little agreement as to which exercise is the most effective for activating the latissimus dorsi, and its intramuscular components are rarely compared, we investigated the intramuscular components of the latissimus dorsi during both trunk and shoulder exercises. Sixteen male subjects performed four isometric exercises: inverted row, body lifting, trunk extension, and trunk lateral bending. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to collect data from the medial and lateral components of the latissimus dorsi, lower trapezius, and the erector spinae at the 12th thoracic level during the isometric exercises. Two-way repeated analysis of variance with two within-subject factors (muscles and exercise conditions) was used to determine the significance of differences between the muscles and differences between exercise variations. The inverted row showed the highest values for the medial latissimus dorsi, which were significantly higher than those of the body lifting or trunk extension exercises. For the lateral latissimus dorsi, lateral bending showed significantly higher muscle activity than the inverted row or trunk extension. During body lifting, the % maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of the erector spinae showed the lowest value, significantly lower than those of the other isometric exercises. The inverted row exercise was effective for activating the medial latissimus dorsi versus the shoulder depression and trunk exertion exercises. The lateral bending and body lifting exercises were favorable for activating the lateral component of the latissimus dorsi. Evaluating trunk lateral bending is essential for examining the function of the latissimus dorsi.

Objectives:The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of visual trace on shoulder muscle activation during diagonal pattern of exercises. Sixteen healthy male participants volunteered to participate.Design:Repeated-measure design.Setting:Laboratory setting.Participants:Sixteen physically active male participants volunteered to participate.Intervention:Five muscles of the shoulder were investigated during standing performance of diagonal shoulder exercises with and without visual trace. Two patterns of the diagonal exercises were used: diagonal 1 flexion (D1F) and diagonal 2 fexion (D2F). Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was used, with factors being the presence of visual trace and exercise variations.Main Outcome Measure:Electromyography (EMG).Results:The average muscle activity values of the lower trapezius and anterior deltoid were higher with the D2F compared with the D1F (P < .05). The visual trace effect was observed within the serratus anterior, with values significantly greater in exercise with visual trace (P < .05). There was a significant increase of the lower trapezius during the exercise with the visual trace condition compared with the exercise without visual trace, which was only observed during D2F (P < .05).Conclusions:Present results suggest that the D2F exercise pattern is effective for activating lower trapezius and anterior deltoid muscles. The visual trace condition has the additional advantage of activating the scapulothoracic muscle activities depending on the specific pattern of diagonal shoulder exercise.

In this study, single- and multi-layered thin films were prepared on a glass substrate using a newly developed rotating hexagonal sputtering cathode in a single chamber. The rotatinghexagonal sputtering cathode can install up to six different sputtering targets or six single targets in a cathode. Using the rotating hexagonal cathode, we prepared a single-layered AZO film and a multi-layer film to evaluate the performance of hexagonal gun. Cross-contamination, which is often observed in multi-layer thin film preparation, was suppressed to nearly zero by controlling process parameters and revising hardware. Energy-saving effects of five-layered glass were also verified by measuring the temperature.

This experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of hand and knee positions on muscular activity during back extension exercises with the Roman chair. Eighteen asymptomatic male amateur athletes performed four prone back extension exercises with two hand positions (crossed-arms and behind-the-head), and two knee positions (extended knee and 90° flexed knee). Surface electromyography (sEMG) was performed to collect data from the lower trapezius (LT), latissimus dorsi (LD), erector spinae in the T12 paraspinal region (ES-T12), erector spinae at the L3 level (ES-L3), gluteus maximus (GM), and biceps femoris (BF). Two-way repeated analysis of variance with two within-subject factors (two hand positions and two knee positions) was used to determine the significance of differences between the exercise conditions, and which hand and knee positions resulted in greater activation with exercise variation. The root mean square sEMG values were normalized using the maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) and represented as the % of the maximum EMG (%mEMG). There was no significant interaction between knee and hand positions in the %mEMG data. The results showed that the hand position affected the normalized activation of LT; the behind-the-head position resulted in significantly greater muscle activation than the crossed-arms hand position (P0.05). The activations of the LD, ES-T10, ES-L4, and GM were greater in the 90° flexed-knee position compared to the extended-knee position (P0.05). Although back extension exercise using the Roman chair has been shown to effectively activate the extensor musculature, our results indicated that changing the knee and hand positions could activate specific muscles differently. To achieve greater activation of trunk extensor muscle during extension exercise with the Roman chair, the flexed-knee position is a useful means of increasing resistance.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to evaluate the immediate effect of stabilizing exercise using the PNF technique on standing balance in one-leg and double-leg stances. [Subjects and Methods] The present study recruited 34 healthy participants from a local university. The Participants performed four balance tests (double-leg stance with and without vision, one-leg stance with and without vision), before and after exercise. The exercise consisted of exercises performed using PNF techniques (stabilizing reversal and rhythmic stabilization), which were applied to facilitate trunk musculature. To examine balance ability, total displacement of the center of pressure was measured during balance tests. [Results] The total anterior-posterior center of pressure displacement was significantly reduced after applying rhythmic stabilization compared before exercise regardless of the balance test conditions. [Conclusion] The present results suggest that trunk stability exercise using rhythmic stabilization could effectively enhance balance ability under one-leg and double-leg conditions.

[Purpose] The purpose of present study were to develop an out-patient satisfaction questionnaire to be used in health care system, from which the underlying dimensions could be derived and individual patient scores calculated, and to evaluate some of the questionnaire’s psychometric properties. [Subjects and Methods] Forty out-patient of local hospital reply both the questionnaire used in previous study and newly designed questionnaire. To identifying validity, the statistical linear relationship between the total score of the primary questionnaire and newly designed questionnaire, which were analyzed. The test-retest reliability has been investigated by using a single measure intra class correlation. [Results] The average satisfaction of the previous questionnaire were significantly correlated with newly designed questionnaire. The intra-lass correlation coefficient of the each items of newly designed questionnaire were strong. Total score of the previous questionnaire had the lowest test-retest reliability, Cronbach’ s alpha coefficient for the newly designed questionnaire score showed acceptable inter-item reliability. [Conclusion] The out-patients’ satisfaction questionnaire developed in present study, which had appropriate validity, reliability, and acceptability.

As no study has examined whether the branches of the latissimus dorsi are activated differently in different exercises, we investigated intramuscular differences of components of the latissimus dorsi during various shoulder isometric exercises. Seventeen male subjects performed four isometric exercises: shoulder extension, adduction, internal rotation, and shoulder depression. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to collect data from the medial and lateral components of the latissimus dorsi during the isometric exercises. Two-way repeated analysis of variance with two within-subject factors (exercise condition and muscle branch) was used to determine the significance of differences between the branches, and which branch was activated more with the exercise variation. The root mean squared sEMG values for the muscles were normalized using the modified isolation equation (%Isolation) and maximum voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC). Neither the %MVIC nor %Isolation data differed significantly between muscle branches, while there was a significant difference with exercise. %MVIC was significantly higher with shoulder extension, compared to the other isometric exercises. There was a significant correlation between exercise condition and muscle branch in the %Isolation data. Shoulder extension and adduction and internal rotation increased %Isolation of the medial latissimus dorsi more than shoulder depression. Shoulder depression had the highest value of %Isolation of the lateral latissimus dorsi compared to the other isometric exercises. Comparing the medial and lateral latissimus dorsi, the medial component was predominantly activated with shoulder extension, adduction, and internal rotation, and the lateral component with shoulder depression. Shoulder extension is effective for activating the latissimus dorsi regardless of the intramuscular branch.

Surface electromyographic response of the middle, lower serratus anterior, and the upper trapezius muscles was investigated within a number of exercises. In total, 16 healthy, physically active volunteers completed three individual trials consisting of arm elevation above 120°, diagonal elevation, dynamic hug, dynamic hug plus, and push-up plus while surface electromyography was used to record muscle activity in the lower and middle serratus anterior (LSA, MSA) and upper trapezius (UT) muscles. The dynamic hug plus exercise caused significant increases in the activity of the MSA compared with the other exercises (P < 0.05). The diagonal elevation, dynamic hug plus, and push up plus showed significantly higher activation in the LSA compared with the arm elevation above 120° and the dynamic hug (P < 0.05). The activation of the UT and the UT/MSA and UT/LSA ratios in both the arm elevation and diagonal shoulder flexion exercises was significantly higher than that for the dynamic hug, dynamic hug plus, and push-up plus exercises (P < 0.05). The present study showed that the dynamic hug plus exercise could be used for activating MSA and LSA. Selective activation of the LSA and MSA is better achieved with exercises that include a scapular protraction component.
