Abstract: International audience; —In this paper we define a simulation-driven process to improve the design of real-time control systems. The process aims at exploring the interplay betwen control performance and real-time behavior of control tasks. The traditional design flows based on the definition of implicit tasks deadlines on control functions are extended to include the exploration of relaxed deadlines and order of execution constraints. Relaxed deadlines, coupled with an optimization approach to find feasible task sets, allow the exploration and evaluation of different task implementations. The definition of relaxed deadlines and the evaluation of task implementations is performed using the T-Res (Time and Resource) scheduling simulation framework [21] under Simulink. The problem is defined as a quadratic optimization problem using a tight upper bound formulation of the task response times. The application of the method to a quadcopter case study shows how the consideration of the control performance in the definition of the timing parameters of interest can lead to an improved design.

Abstract: International audience; The PPILOW project aims to co-construct innovations to improve Poultry and Pig Welfare in Low-input outdoor and Organic farming systems through a multi-actor approach. PPILOW implements a participatory approach for proposing and studying welfare-improvement levers. It will provide a combination of practical solutions that can be applied at a pan-European level with specific adjustments depending on citizen’s expectations and the target market. The multi-actor approach consists in involving end-users including farmers, breeding companies, feed producers, consumer associations, retailers, advisers, processors, and scientists in National Practitioner Groups (NPG) in six participating countries. PPILOW partners facilitate the groups by connecting NPG at European level, transferring scientific information, interacting with partners engaged in animal experiments, and co-creating innovations rising from NPG-specific demands. They co-build with PPILOW partners welfare self-assessment tools (development of the PIGLOW app for pigs and refinement of the EBENE® app for poultry), and innovative breeding, feeding, and rearing strategies and techniques to improve the welfare of animals. They co-design protocols, test innovations on farm, and disseminate the results. In turn, they receive insights on methods and scientific results, and inputs from other NPG reinforcing the value of the expected outcomes. Approaches focus on avoiding physical damage and the elimination of layer male chicks, on reducing boar taint of intact male pigs, promoting positive behaviours, animal health, and robustness through field studies with pigs and poultry. Multicriteria analyses of the most effective levers of welfare improvement will be performed to evaluate their economic, social, and environmental impacts based on the ‘One Welfare’ concept; economic and business models will also be developed. To ensure the rapid uptake of the project results by end-users, the close involvement of PPILOW’s NPG throughout the EU will ensure disseminationactivities and the facilitation of change. Abstract: International audience; Although organic animal production is based on farming systems that enable a high degree of expression of natural behaviour by the animals, there are still some welfare challenges in such systems. Our study provides a state of the art of practices that could improve animal welfare in organic productions and interviews with key informants have been conducted to identify gaps and opportunities for animal welfare. This study provides a shortlist of practices that could be used to improve animal welfare while taking into account farmer wellbeing and sustainability and so contributing to “One Welfare”.

Abstract: Objective Micro-fabricated neural interfaces based on polyimide (PI) are achieving increasing importance in translational research. The ability to produce well-defined micro-structures with properties that include chemical inertness, mechanical flexibility and low water uptake are key advantages for these devices. Approach This paper reports the development of the transverse intrafascicular multichannel electrode (TIME) used to deliver intraneural sensory feedback to an upper-limb amputee in combination with a sensorized hand prosthesis. A failure mode analysis on the explanted devices was performed after a first-in-human study limited to 30 d. Main results About 90% of the stimulation contact sites of the TIMEs maintained electrical functionality and stability during the full implant period. However, optical analysis post-explantation revealed that 62.5% of the stimulation contacts showed signs of delamination at the metallization-PI interface. Such damage likely occurred due to handling during explantation and subsequent analysis, since a significant change in impedance was not observed in vivo. Nevertheless, whereas device integrity is mandatory for long-term functionality in chronic implantation, measures to increase the bonding strength of the metallization-PI interface deserve further investigation. We report here that silicon carbide (SiC) is an effective adhesion-promoting layer resisting heavy electrical stimulation conditions within a rodent animal trial. Optical analysis of the new electrodes revealed that the metallization remained unaltered after delivering over 14 million pulses in vivo without signs of delamination at the metallization-PI interface. Significance Failure mode analysis guided implant stability optimization. Abstract: International audience; We study the relation between income distribution and growth, mediated by structural changes on the demand and supply sides. Using the results from a multi-sector growth model, we compare two growth regimes that differ in three aspects: labour relations, competition and consumption patterns. Regime one, similar to Fordism, is assumed to be relatively less unequal, more competitive and to have more homogeneous consumers than regime two, which is similar to post-Fordism. We analyse the parameters that define the two regimes to study the role of the economy’s exogenous institutional features and endogenous structural features on output growth, income distribution, and their relation. We find that regime one exhibits significantly lower inequality, higher output and productivity and lower unemployment compared to regime two, and that both institutional and structural features explain these differences. Most prominent amongst the first group are wage differences, accompanied by capital income and the distribution of bonuses to top managers. The concentration of production magnifies the effect of wage differences on income distribution and output growth, suggesting the relevance of competition norms. Amongst structural determinants, firm organisation and the structure of demand are particularly relevant. The way that final demand is distributed across sectors influences competition and overall market concentration; demand from the least wealthy classes is especially important. We show also the tight linking between institutional and structural determinants. Based on this linking, we conclude by discussing a number of policy implications that emerge from our model.

Abstract: International audience; Invertebrates perform many vital functions in agricultural production, but many taxa are in decline, including pest natural enemies. Action is needed to increase their abundance if more sustainable agricultural systems are to be achieved. Conservation biological control (CBC) is a key component of integrated pest management yet has failed to be widely adopted in mainstream agriculture. Approaches to improving conservation biological control have been largely ad hoc. Two approaches are described to improve this process, one based upon pest natural enemy ecology and resource provision while the other focusses on the ecosystem service delivery using the QuESSA (Quantification of Ecological Services for Sustainable Agriculture) project as an example. In this project, a predictive scoring system was developed to show the potential of five seminatural habitat categories to provide biological control, from which predictive maps were generated for Europe. Actual biological control was measured in a series of case studies using sentinel systems (insect or seed prey), trade-offs between ecosystem services were explored, and heatmaps of biological control were generated. The overall conclusion from the QuESSA project was that results were context specific, indicating that more targeted approaches to CBC are needed. This may include designing new habitats or modifying existing habitats to support the types of natural enemies required for specific crops or pests.

Abstract: Conventional leg prostheses do not convey sensory information about motion or interaction with the ground to above-knee amputees, thereby reducing confidence and walking speed in the users that is associated with high mental and physical fatigue1–4. The lack of physiological feedback from the remaining extremity to the brain also contributes to the generation of phantom limb pain from the missing leg5,6. To determine whether neural sensory feedback restoration addresses these issues, we conducted a study with two transfemoral amputees, implanted with four intraneural stimulation electrodes7 in the remaining tibial nerve (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT03350061). Participants were evaluated while using a neuroprosthetic device consisting of a prosthetic leg equipped with foot and knee sensors. These sensors drive neural stimulation, which elicits sensations of knee motion and the sole of the foot touching the ground. We found that walking speed and self-reported confidence increased while mental and physical fatigue decreased for both participants during neural sensory feedback compared to the no stimulation trials. Furthermore, participants exhibited reduced phantom limb pain with neural sensory feedback. The results from these proof-of-concept cases provide the rationale for larger population studies investigating the clinical utility of neuroprostheses that restore sensory feedback. A new prosthetic leg that can transmit sensory signals via implanted electrodes is shown to restore meaningful sensory feedback that improves walking performance and lowers phantom limb pain during use in two human lower-limb amputees.

We tested our model against hardware and refined it in consultation with maintainers. Finally, we formalised the fundamental law of the Read-Copy-Update synchronisation mechanism, and proved that one of its implementations satisfies this law.

Abstract: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) aims to promote physical and biological regulation strategies that help farmers contain populations of pests (pathogens, animal pests and weeds) and to finally reduce the reliance on pesticides. It is based on the holistic combination of multiple management measures rather than on the sum of single methods, each of them having only small effects on pests reduction. Thus, to analyse the interactions between IPM measures and to evaluate the sustainability of their implementation, we require an approach considering the whole cropping system (CS), i.e. a functional entity whose complexity is more than the sum of its parts. A network of European experiments at the CS level was set up recently, and aimed at sharing data and expertise to enhance knowledge of IPM. Comparison of existing methodologies highlighted a diversity of CS designs and experimental layouts. We deduced that the concept of CS itself was viewed differently among scientists, and this affected experimental protocols. Other differences were related to the research context and objectives. Some experiments aimed to explore very innovative strategies and generated knowledge on both their effects on the agroecosystem and their ability to satisfy a set of performance targets, while others aimed to provide quickly adoptable solutions for local farmers in line with the current socio-economic constraints. In some research programmes, the experiment was part of the CS design process — and tested CS were regularly revised based on an continuous improvement loop — while in other cases CS were kept stable across years so as to enable the evaluation of their long-term cumulative effects. A critical aspect contributing to the diversity among CS experiments was the distinction between a factorial design of experimental CS and systemic approaches: factorial experiments allowed quantification of the effects of each IPM component regardless of the consistency between components defining the CS. In contrast, systemic approaches focused on the overall evaluation of CS designed with consideration of their consistency, hence maximising their ability to meet the objectives. Because CS experiments represent a huge investment in terms of economics and time, preliminary reflections of the relevance of the experimental strategy is of critical importance.

Abstract: Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is a widely applied data-driven method for parsing brain and non-brain EEG source signals, mixed by volume conduction to the scalp electrodes, into a set of maximally temporally and often functionally independent components (ICs). Many ICs may be identified with a precise physiological or non-physiological origin. However, this process is hindered by partial instability in ICA results that can arise from noise in the data. Here we propose RELICA (RELiable ICA), a novel method to characterize IC reliability within subjects. RELICA first computes IC "dipolarity" a measure of physiological plausibility, plus a measure of IC consistency across multiple decompositions of bootstrap versions of the input data. RELICA then uses these two measures to visualize and cluster the separated ICs, providing a within-subject measure of IC reliability that does not involve checking for its occurrence across subjects. We demonstrate the use of RELICA on EEG data recorded from 14 subjects performing a working memory experiment and show that many brain and ocular artifact ICs are correctly classified as "stable" (highly repeatable across decompositions of bootstrapped versions of the input data). Many stable ICs appear to originate in the brain, while other stable ICs account for identifiable non-brain processes such as line noise. RELICA might be used with any linear blind source separation algorithm to reduce the risk of basing conclusions on unstable or physiologically un-interpretable component processes. Abstract: International audience; Phantom limb pain develops in the majority of amputees. The underlying mechanisms are not yet com- pletely understood and thus, no treatment is fully effective. Based on recent studies with electrical stimu- lation, we hypothesize that electrical stimulation of afferent nerves with a sufficiently high spatial resolu- tion might alleviate phantom limb pain by giving sensory input to the patient. We present our system con- cepts in general and focus here on a novel electrode concept to selectively interface small nerve fiber ensembles on the fascicular level over the complete cross section of a peripheral nerve: the transversal intrafascicular multichannel nerve electrode (TIME). Electrodes have been developed supported by elec- trical and mechanical simulations of the interface and evaluated with respect to their functional selectivity on peripheral nerves in two animal models.

Abstract: International audience; Phantom limb pain frequently follows amputation. Currently there is no fully effective treatment available. Our aim is to develop an innovative Human Machine Interface (HMI) where we apply multi-channel microstimulation to the nerve stump of an amputee subject to manipulate the phantom limb sensations and explore the possibility of using microstimulation as a treatment for phantom limb pain.

Abstract: International audience; AIM: Phantom limb pain (PLP) develops in the lost limb in 50-80% of amputees. Today, it is not completely understood why the pain occurs, and no effective treatments are available. The favorable effect of electrical stimulation on PLP has been demonstrated. Our aim is to develop a novel system for manipulation of sensations by application of multi-channel microstimulation to the nerve stump of an amputee and explore this method as a treatment for clinched fist PLP (see figure). RESULTS: 1) Electrode design. Non-corrugated TIME electrodes with different dimensions and 8-12 active sites have been manufactued and tested in vivo and in vitro testing in the rat and pig. Methods for corrugated prototypes were developed and the first prototypes were realized. 2) Electrode selectivity modeling. A peripheral nerve model is under development to evaluate the electrode's selective stimulation properties and to optimize electrode design. Simulated currents and neural activity generated were qualitatively assessed using experimental data obtained from rat nerves. 3) Implant modeling. To optimize the implantation procedure, a theoretical peripheral nervous tissue model and a 3D FEM was implemented. Both models closely reproduce the experimental peripheral nervous tissue behaviour and simulate the insertion forces transmitted to the electrode during implantation. 4) Multi-channel stimulators and connectors. A 12-pole prototype, bench-top stimulator has been implemented and successfully tested in animal experiments. A high-count, implantable connector between stimulator and electrode has been designed. 5) Biocompatibility. Electrode materials were evaluated and did not induce immune rejection and significant inflammatory reaction after in vivo implantation in the rat. Electrode implantation will require an understanding of the fascicular characteristics of the target nerve. Morphological characteristics of the rat, pig and human nerves are currently evaluated and compared. 6) Animal testing. First TIME electrodes test were carried out in the acute rat and acute pig. Results indicated selective stimulation of different fascicles with graded recruitment. 7) Clinical evaluation: To quantify the location of artificially evoked sensations and evaluate the strength of artificially evoked sensations a psychophysical testing platform is under development. Main inclusion criteria for patient recruitment have been identified and protocols have been defined. CONCLUSION: The feasibility of the corrugated version of the TIME electrode has yet to be explored. Further work designing, optimizing and testing the TIME electrode and all technological developments will be carried out including theoretical stimulations and animal experimental work before the optimal electrode for human implant will be chosen.

Abstract: Trabajo presentado en el IEEE International Conference on Advanced Robotics and Its Social Impacts (ARSO), celebrado en Long Beach, CA (Estados Unidos), del 28 al 30 de mayo de 2022, The influence of robotics in the job market has socio-economic consequences and the inevitable loss of job positions, but in the Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) scenarios, where humans and robots work together, new jobs and business models will be created. These HRI scenarios can be seen in manufacturing, medicine, maintenance, education, etc. and in the future, in most of the daily tasks. The purpose of this article is to analyze from the perspective of Human-Robot Interaction scenarios, which new HRI human roles and HRI tasks categories has to be taken into account. The new HRI human roles will serve to define and homogenize the transverse skills needed for workers working in HRI scenarios and for analyzing the human roles in HRI experiments. We introduce a methodological approach using the TERRINet HRI Template, which facilitates the analysis of tasks that in the near future will be done by humans working with robots.
