2D materials are solid microscopic flakes with a‐few‐Angstrom thickness possessing some of the largest surface‐to‐volume ratios known. Altering their conformation state from a flat flake to a scroll or fiber offers a synergistic association of properties arising from 2D and 1D nanomaterials. However, a combination of the long‐range electrostatic and short‐range solvation forces produces an interlayer repulsion that has to be overcome, making scrolling 2D materials without disrupting the pristine structure a challenging task. Herein, a facile method is presented to alter the 2D materials' inter‐layer interactions by confining organic salts onto their basal area, forming 2D‐confined electrolytes. The confined electrolytes produce local charge inhomogeneities, which can conjugate across the interlayer gap, binding the two surfaces. This allows the 2D‐confined electrolytes to behave as polyelectrolytes within a higher dimensional order (2D → 1D) and form robust nanofibers with distinct electronic properties. The method is not material‐specific and the resulting fibers are tightly bound even though the crystal structure of the basal plane remains unaltered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mouse wheel may induce physical fatigue by requiring users to clutch the wheel repeatedly when scrolling long distances. To address this problem, some mouse products provide a free-spinning mode in which users can spin the wheel to initiate inertial scrolling. However, the time and effort required to toggle the free-spinning mode may lower the usability of the mouse wheel. To enable inertial scrolling without the overhead of mode switching, we present TouchWheel, a physical mouse wheel with touch sensitivity and a virtual wheel model that enables users to perform flick-and-stop operations as they do on touchscreens. A user experiment revealed that participants could actively use TouchWheel's flick-and-stop operation according to their different scrolling needs. For tasks that frequently required long-distance scrolling, TouchWheel outperformed a normal mouse wheel in task completion time and required fewer clutching and mode-switching actions than the normal mouse wheel and a spin-enabled mouse wheel. In this paper I discuss the affordances and popularity of the short-video app TikTok from an audience studies point of view. I do so by drawing on findings from ethnographic fieldwork with young adult TikTok users based in the United Kingdom that was conducted in 2020 and 2021. I trace how using the app, specifically scrolling through the TikTok For You Page, the app's algorithmic content feed, became a fixed part of the everyday routines of young adults. I show how TikTok appealed to them as a convenient means of escape and relief that they were unable to find elsewhere during and beyond times of lockdown. Further, I highlight the complex nature of TikTok as an app and the active role that users play in imagining and appropriating the app's affordances as meaningful parts of their everyday social life. Closing the paper, I reflect on future directions of TikTok scholarship by stressing the importance of situated audience studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In four major parts, this study investigates the phenomenon of scrolling. Its first task is to argue in favor of a specific quality of the experience of scrolling, distinguishing it from other forms of distraction, notably from the flow experience. Scrolling takes the shape of aimless drifting. Secondly, it investigates the phenomenon of scrolling against its relevant historical, economic, social, and cultural backdrop, with the intention of understanding scrolling as a typical phenomenon of today, rather than subscribing to a biased and superficial critique of its wastefulness or outright pathological character. The third part presents a comprehensive analysis of the temporal makeup of scrolling. Its temporality is expressed in the specific impatience of scrolling. Furthermore, scrolling amounts to a temporal reduction in the sense of favoring the present moment (and suppressing the temporal dimensions of the past and the future). The reductiveness of scrolling pertains to the semantic content as well. I argue that scrolling does not allow for certain experiences (such as, e.g., profound sadness). The temporality of scrolling is one of experiencing lived time as the permanence of passing. In the last section, I connect scrolling to boredom, and argue that scrolling accomplishes the task of allowing for an existential distractedness. In conclusion, I propose a nuanced evaluation of scrolling: in a Pascalian sense, scrolling responds to a profoundly human need of distraction. Yet I find scrolling dangerous in how easily available such distraction becomes, and in how it accustoms the users to a reductive existential experience. Most major platforms and news portals use the feed approach to information display, which offers people the ability to engage in continuous scrolling. This affordance, "scrollability," is an understudied feature that changes how people consume news. The endless scroll presents opportunities to monetize attention for advertisers, and a seemingly bottomless supply of headlines for news consumers. Moreover, more people report scrolling headlines than actually reading news stories. A scrollable technical environment creates circumstances that encourage headline reading, or what we call "news-scrolling," and yet we know little about the consequences of scrollability for other behaviors. In this paper we set forth an argument for increased scholarly attention to scrollability in the context of online news consumption, and articulate a theoretical framework for explaining the behaviors of news-scrollers and news-clickers. Purpose: We aimed to determine whether Descemet's membrane (DM) scrolling occurs primarily along the vertical or horizontal axis and establish whether oval trephination along the axis of least scrolling can reduce the grade of the scroll. Methods: The longest limbus to limbus axis on 28 sclerocorneal discs was taken as the horizontal axis. The horizontal (n = 7) or (right angles to it) vertical (n = 6) axis was marked on DM before peeling it off. The direction and grade of scrolling was observed. Narrow strips (3-4 mm wide) were then cut along the two axes (n = 4 each) and the scrolling pattern was observed. Ellipses (7 x 9 mm) of DM were punched along the two axes (n = 6 each) and the scrolls graded. Immunofluorescent staining for elastin on horizontal and vertical tissue sections from three DM samples was performed. The intensity and thickness of elastin staining were measured. Results: Twenty four (85.72%) DM samples showed scrolling along the horizontal axis, none showed scrolling along the vertical axis, and four (14.28%) samples showed a spiral scroll, regardless of which axis was marked (grade 3.7 and 3.6). Vertically oval discs showed significantly reduced scrolling (grade 1.2) compared to horizontally oval discs (grade 3.5). Narrow strips of DM showed a similar scrolling pattern. Immunohistology showed no difference in any of the parameters examined along the two axes or from the center to the periphery. Conclusion: DM scrolls primarily along the horizontal axis. Vertically oval DM samples show minimal scrolling, which can be an advantage in DMEK. Differential scrolling is not determined by the distribution of elastin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The perception of an image obtained by scrolling through a small screen can differ from the typical perception of a wide visual field in a stable environment. However, we do not fully understand image perception by scrolling on a small screen based on psychological knowledge of visual perception and cognition of images. This study investigated how screen size limitations and image shifts caused by scrolling affect image encoding in visual long-term memory. Participants explored the stimulus images under three conditions. Under the scrolling condition, they explored the image through a small screen. Under the moving-window condition, they explored the image by moving the screen over a masked image; this is similar to looking through a moving peephole. Under the no-window condition, participants were able to view the entire image simultaneously. Each stimulus comprised 12 objects. After 1 h, the samples were tested for object recognition. Consequently, the memory retention rate was higher in the scrolling and moving-window conditions than in the no-window condition, and no difference was observed between the scrolling and movingwindow conditions. The time required by participants to explore the stimulus was shorter under the no-window condition. Thus, encoding efficiency (i.e., the rate of encoding information into memory in a unit of time) did not differ among the three conditions. An analysis of the scan trace of the scrolling and window movements in relation to the image revealed differences between the scrolling and moving-window conditions in terms of the scan's dynamic features. Moreover, a negative correlation was observed between the memory retention rate and image-scrolling speed. We conclude that perceiving images by scrolling on a small screen enables better memory retention than that obtained through whole-image viewing if the viewing time is not limited. We suggest that viewing through a small screen is not necessarily disadvantageous for memory encoding efficiency depending on the presentation mode, and the results show that participants who scrolled fast tended to have worse memory retention. These findings can impact school education and thus suggest that the use of mobile devices in learning has some merit from the viewpoint of cognitive psychology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recognizing the appealing features of a tablet (e.g., an iPad), including size, mobility, touch screen display, and virtual keyboard, more educational professionals are moving away from larger laptop and desktop computers and turning to the iPad for their daily work, such as reading and writing. Following the results of a recent survey of individuals who serve as ETS raters, more than 40% reported that they would prefer to use an iPad or other type of tablet to score essays. However, iPad‐based essay scoring could affect scoring accuracy and scoring time because the smaller screen and other features of an iPad may also affect raters' reading comprehension and score assigning processes. To address this issue, we invited 10 experienced raters to score holistically 40 essays for a graduate admission test using a desktop computer and an iPad following a counterbalanced design. We compared the raters' scores against the criterion scores and analyzed scoring times, scoring behaviors, and raters' answers to a structured interview after the scoring experiment. The results reveal no obvious differences between the two devices in the scoring accuracy or average scoring time per essay, which suggests that scoring on an iPad may not reduce scoring quality or scoring productivity for essays that are holistically scored as compared to scoring the essays on a desktop computer. We also found a few iPad‐specific issues that raters reported, including issues associated with the invisible scrolling bar and the extra scrolling needed to reach the score‐assignment panel, difficulty navigating between the prompt and the essay response, and oversensitivity of the touch screen. This study explored the impact of scrolling on the measurement equivalence of electronic patient-reported outcome measures (ePROMs) in the presence and absence of scrolling. Methods Adult participants with a chronic condition involving daily pain completed ePROMs on four devices with different scrolling properties: a large provisioned device not requiring scrolling; two provisioned devices requiring scrolling – one with a “smart-scrolling” feature that disabled the “next” button until all information was viewed, and a second without this feature; and BYOD with smart-scrolling. The ePROMs included were the SF-12, EQ-5D-5L, and three pain measures: a visual analogue scale, a numeric response scale and a Likert scale. Participants completed English or Spanish versions according to their first language. Associations between ePROM scores were assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), with lower bound of 95% confidence interval (CI) > 0.7 indicating comparability. Results One hundred fifteen English- or Spanish-speaking participants (21-75y) completed all four administrations. High associations between scrolling and non-scrolling were observed (ICCs: 0.71–0.96). The equivalence threshold was met for all but one SF-12 domain score (bodily pain; lower 95% CI: 0.65) and two EQ-5D-5L item scores (pain/discomfort, usual activities; lower 95% CI: 0.64/0.67). Age, language, and device size produced insignificant differences in scores. Conclusions The measurement properties of PROMs are preserved even in the presence of scrolling on a handheld device. Further studies that assess scrolling impact over long-term, repeated use are recommended.

The focus of this essay is a spectacular scroll in the British Museum's collections that has been neither exhibited nor published since its acquisition. Perhaps that is because several fundamental questions about it remain unanswered: Where and when was it made? Who made it, and for whom? What purpose and meaning did it have for the first people who saw it and those who subsequently came into contact with it? In this essay, I begin to address these elementary questions. I establish that this eleven-foot-long scroll was created in Mewar in western India in 1769, and that since then it has cleaved many realms. Those realms include art and devotion, text and textile, astral science and genealogy, classical epics and vernacular histories, and cyclical time and linear time. I then postulate that understanding this short scroll's ability to nimbly separate and join those realms can help us critically appreciate the forms, layouts, and functions of two other contemporaneous cloth scrolls from the same region that are considerably longer and also have received sparse scholarly attention. Ultimately, I show how micro studies of scrolls and scrolling practices can allow us to understand forms of knowledge in Mewar on the eve of British colonialism, and to participate in challenging certain perceptions of the region's past that remain inflected by James Tod's writings nearly two hundred years after their publication. This essay considers the prospects for digital media to generate interological thought. While digital media depend upon the inter- and make it newly visible and thinkable, the most common modes of engagement with digital media encourage a selforientation, temporal horizon, and action tendency that undermines these prospects by encouraging ontological thinking and practice instead. This argument is developed through the example of scrolling on social media in comparison with meditation, illustrating how scrolling is more of an immeditative mode concerned with the self, Chronos, and attachment that runs counter to the egolessness, timelessness, and nonattachment of meditative modes. Business process modeling is an important activity for developing software systems—especially within digitization projects and when realizing digital business models. Specifying requirements and building executable workflows is often done by using BPMN 2.0 process models. Although there are several style guides available for BPMN, e.g., by Silver and Richard (BPMN method and style, vol 2, Cody-Cassidy Press, Aptos, 2009), there has not been much empirical research done into the consequences of the diagram layout. In particular, layouts that require scrolling have not been investigated yet. The aim of this research is to establish layout guidelines for business process modeling that help business process modelers to create more understandable business process diagrams. For establishing benefits and penalties of different layouts, a controlled eye tracking experiment was conducted, in which data of 21 professional software developers was used. Our results show that horizontal layouts are less demanding and that as many diagram elements as possible should be put on the initially visible screen area because such diagram elements are viewed more often and longer. Additionally, diagram elements related to the reader's task are read more often than those not relevant to the task. BPMN modelers should favor a horizontal layout and use a more complex snake or multi-line layout whenever the diagrams are too large to fit on one page in order to support BPMN model comprehension. Social media fuel a sense of unsettledness to encourage uninterrupted connectivity and generate quantifiable engagement. This article is concerned with the habitual, naturalized character acquired by these platforms and with how this is paradoxically constructed by prompting a permanent state of anticipation. The aim here is to explore, with a phenomenological sensibility, the experiences that emerge in settings of continuous connectedness from the perspective of the people who use these technologies in the context of everyday life – that is, the 'users'. Theoretically, the entry point is to revisit the claim of liveness – and its shifting relations with issues of sequential flow and eventfulness – and to position it as a central resource in this process, in which users are deliberately encouraged to expect the unexpected even in 'non-eventful' situations. Drawing from the thematic analysis of data collected through the diary-interview method with people who live in London and use a range of social media, I examine both how this urge of continuous connectedness operates and the ambivalent experiences it generates. In this paper, we investigated the touch gestures of the scroll direction of a small and long UI due to the characteristics of a device in a smartphone environment that has become popular and used. Touch gestures are touched and directed by triggers such as metaphors and affordances based on past experiences. Different types of touch gestures are used depending on the type of navigation, motion, and transformation gesture, but scrolling is the most frequently used among them. In general, the scroll is vertically scrolled, but recently, a design pattern that can be scrolled left and right inside is arranged to cause cognitive dissonance of users. In the use of an inner scroll that can scroll left and right by covering a part of the right content, the mixing of a non-scrollable design pattern becomes a factor that requires attention to the user. Therefore, it was found that the use of triggers and the use of consistent design patterns can enhance the user experience even in the inner scroll environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the propagation of estimation errors through a common coning, sculling, and scrolling architecture used in modern-day inertial navigation systems. Coning, sculling, and scrolling corrections often have an unaccounted for effect on the error statistics of inertial measurements used to describe the state and uncertainty propagation for position, velocity, and attitude estimates. Through the development of an error analysis for a set of coning, sculling, and scrolling algorithms, mappings of the measurement and estimation errors through the correction term are adaptively generated. Using the developed mappings, an efficient and consistent propagation of the state and uncertainty, within the multiplicative extended Kalman filter architecture, is achieved. Monte Carlo analysis is performed, and results show that the developed system has favorable attributes when compared to the traditional mechanization.

This study aimed to identify the effect of a training program using agility exercises on enhancing basic skills performance in football (Passing, Scrolling, Attacking) among Students of the Physical Education Faculty at Yarmouk university. The experimental approach has been conducted on a sample of (40) students who were registered in a football course and who were chosen with the deliberate method. The study sample was divided into two equivalent groups, (20) students per group. The experimental group used the training program. The control group used the schedule program to basic skills in football. The following statistics were used: means, standard deviations, flattening and spacing values. The Independent Samples t-test and Paired Samples t-test were used. The study showed that there are no statically significant differences at (α ≤ 0.05) between the pre and post measure for the members of the control group to develop the basic skills in football (Passing, Scrolling, Attacking) for the post measure. The study also showed that there are statically significant differences at (α ≤ 0.05) between the pre and post measures to develop the skills of football for the experimental group and in favor of the post measures. The study also showed that there are statically significant differences at (α ≤ 0.05) between the post measure for the members of the control and experimental group due to basic skills in football and in favor of the experimental measures.
