PHYSICAL geography , *SCIENTIFIC knowledge , *LARGE-scale brain networks , *CITATION analysis , *DISCOURSE analysis - Abstract
Critical physical geography (CPG) calls for integrative research on material landscapes and the socio‐political dynamics of scientific knowledge production. Network analysis, a rich tradition of tools and approaches for analyzing relational information, has seen little use in the CPG literature to date. This represents a fruitful opportunity, as many of CPG's core interests—knowledge politics, histories of scientific concepts, and ecosocial relations—can be effectively analyzed using network techniques. In this article, I argue for adapting network approaches to CPG. First, I provide an overview of various network concepts, approaches, and their origins. I then discuss bibliometric network techniques for "science mapping" including co‐word, co‐authorship, and citation analyses. Next, I describe discourse network analysis, a recent mixed‐method approach from political science. Finally, I discuss overlaps with emerging approaches from qualitative and visual network analysis. In each section, I provide existing and hypothetical examples, as well as software and visualization techniques, that demonstrate how network approaches could add new insights to CPG and related scholarship. Linking CPG with the diverse traditions of network analysis has the potential to produce new empirical understandings and bring the field into conversation with a growing body of research that spans the social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities. Despite the feminization of the medical profession, the academic world remains largely male-dominated. Several studies conducted in the English-speaking world have shown that women are published less than men. Our goal is to define the evolution of the role of women in five French medical journals. The articles from five French journals (Revue du Praticien, Bulletin du Cancer, Exercer, Presse Médicale, Cancer/Radiothérapie) published in February between 1983 and 2019 were included. We selected twelve years from that period of time. The analysis was completed using Cochran-Armitage tests with a significance level of < 0,05. Among the authors, 4397 were included in total and we were able to determine the gender of 4309 of them. The percentage of female authors went from 16% in 1983 to 36.4% in 2019 (p < 0.001). This rise is more significant for those specializing in surgery than for those specializing in medicine, with a percentage going from 14% to 38.5% (p < 0.001) against 16.8% to 35.4% (p < 0.001) respectively. In 2019, women still only represent 30.2% of the last authors, 27.6% of editorial authors and 30.6% of corresponding authors. Our study underlines a significant increase in the number of female authors and highlights that their position as authors remains on the margins of the most prestigious authorial positions. While we can celebrate this increase, we nevertheless notice that there are fewer female authors than female practitioners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SCIENTOMETRICS , *ETHICS , *QUALITATIVE research , *DATA analysis - Abstract
Current research on ethics is mostly punctual, trying to identify a problem or find a solution. Even scientometric research on ethics follows this pattern. We consider it necessary to take a closer look and work out an overview of what ethics represents today and what we are heading towards in terms of specialized literature in recent years (2011-2021). Using the method of scientometric research, by querying the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database, we will establish the two research groups on which we will apply 10 analysis criteria, provided by the facilities of the new WoS interface (launched in 2021). The results of the study are presented in 22 figures which are interpreted by means of a qualitative approach. The novelty of the research is highlighted by the interpretation of the 31 articles in the S1 Table, which represent scientometric studies on ethics and are grouped within the article in 7 tables. The conclusions that emerge indicate a substantial increase in the interest in ethics an almost general coverage of research domains and areas with ethical topics, a wide range of territorial (by country) and institutional (by affiliation) distribution of the authors, a substantial funding of research in this field but also an availability of journals and authors to free access to these studies. These results can be the basis for future scientometrically and/or qualitatively refined research, on any of the highlighted research domains and areas for any author who is interested in the ethics on their own research field. As part of a research on the application of open science principles to the field of bioeconomy, we conducted a scientometric study of the scientific production of France in this field, for the period 2015 to 2019. The bioeconomy is an approach that aims to replace fossil resources such as coal or oil by more environmentally friendly resources called "biomass". The study identified 1,913 publications in the Scopus database. We analyzed this corpus under various aspects: types and sources of documents, with volumetry and impact; authors, organisations and institutions; sources of funding; degree of internationality and openness (open access). The discussion focuses on the terminology and sources of such a scientometric study, on the accessibility of publications and on the position of France in this field. The conclusion proposes some recommendations for conducting a similar study, particularly for information professionals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OPEN access publishing - Abstract
For two decades, open access (OA) has gained momentum worldwide. However, adoption of OA in Canada is lagging compared with other countries. Using data from Dimensions and Érudit, this paper provides an overview of OA dissemination in Canada, focusing on the effect of institutions, language, and funding. Papers in French, and from Quebec universities, are more likely to be OA, while papers from engineering-oriented institutions are less likely to be OA. Regarding funders, those in health sciences have higher OA compliance. The paper concludes discussing disciplinary differences in OA dissemination, low compliance to OA mandates in Canada, and the role of Érudit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2014, a union of German research organisations established Projekt DEAL, a national-level project to negotiate licensing agreements with large scientific publishers. Negotiations between DEAL and Elsevier began in 2016, and broke down without a successful agreement in 2018; in this time, around 200 German research institutions cancelled their license agreements with Elsevier, leading Elsevier to restrict journal access at those institutions. We investigated the effect on researchers' publishing and citing behaviours from a bibliometric perspective, using a dataset of ∼400,000 articles published by researchers at DEAL institutions between 2012-2020. We further investigated these effects with respect to the timing of contract cancellations, research disciplines, collaboration patterns, and article open-access status. We find evidence for a decrease in Elsevier’s market share of articles from DEAL institutions, with the largest year-on-year market share decreases occuring from 2018 to 2020 following the implementation of access restrictions. We also observe year-on-year decreases in the proportion of citations, although the decrease is smaller. We conclude that negotiations with Elsevier and access restrictions have led to some reduced willingness to publish in Elsevier journals, but that researchers are not strongly affected in their ability to cite Elsevier articles, implying that researchers use other methods to access scientific literature.

- Abstract
While numerous qualitative social scientific analyses of (environmental) epigenetics have been published, we still lack a macro-level, quantitative assessment of the field of epigenetics as a whole. This article is aimed at filling this gap. Mobilizing an extended version of the Web of Science, we constituted a corpus of 199,484 documents (articles, reviews, editorial material, etc.) published between 1991 and 2017 and performed several scientometric analyses to map out the development and structure of the epigenetics field. Three main results were drawn from these investigations. First, contradicting the hope expressed by some social scientists that their disciplines will find solace in epigenetics' social biology, it is striking that the scientists, journals and institutions that drive most of the research in the field are overall little concerned with social and environmental dimensions of gene expression. Second, and confirming existing qualitative analyses, we find that epigenetics is constituted by diverse networks of scholars, institutions and research specialties that enjoy relative autonomy from each other and approach epigenetics through different thematic interests, from cognitive functions to cancer, to DNA methylation in plants and molecular biology. Third, findings obtained from the bibliographic coupling showed that these different networks became more and more autonomous over the last decade, which suggests that we are currently witnessing the constitution of a scientific archipelago akin to that of behavior genetics (Panofsky, 2014: 33) rather than to a discipline per se. At the same time, this differentiation was less pronounced conceptually speaking, as we also observed a clear standardization of the keywords used in epigenetics articles between 1991 and 2017, with DNA methylation and RNAs serving as rallying signs for different communities of researchers. Author affiliations provide key information when attributing academic performance like publication counts. So far, such measures have been aggregated either manually or only to top-level institutions, such as universities. Supervised affiliation resolution requires a large number of annotated alignments between affiliation strings and known institutions, which are not readily available. We introduce the task of unsupervised hierarchical affiliation resolution, which assigns affiliations to institutions on all hierarchy levels (e.g. departments), discovering the institutions as well as their hierarchical ordering on the fly. From the corresponding requirements, we derive a simple conceptual framework based on the subset partial order that can be extended to account for the discrepancies evident in realistic affiliations from the Web of Science. We implement initial baselines and provide datasets and evaluation metrics for experimentation. Results show that mapping affiliations to known institutions and discovering lower-level institutions works well with simple baselines, whereas unsupervised top-level- and hierarchical resolution is more challenging. Our work provides structured guidance for further in-depth studies and improved methodology by identifying and discussing a number of observed difficulties and important challenges that future work needs to address.

National audience; Research activities are generally observed and evaluated through the prism of their production and financial elements or team composition. In addition to standardized management indicators and bibliometrics, the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) has been building new indicators for the last ten years, based on the annual regulatory declarations of the Institute's researchers. Different quality management tools allow the evolution of the different interfaces. This source of data, more "open" and more "useful" through its integration into the Institute's information system, is adapted to the needs of the multi-year management of research at the IRD. The aim is twofold: (1) to make progress in the evaluation of research and in the mastery of information by all actors, (2) to enlighten as many actors as possible via more efficient digital circuits and tools. The purpose of this article is to explain how the IRD is changing the entire production chain and the indicators of researchers' activities to better map scientific activities.; Les activités de la recherche sont généralement observées et évaluées à travers le prisme de leur production et des éléments financiers ou de compositions des équipes.

- Abstract
Möglich ist dies u. a.

- Abstract
Logocentrismus hodnocení vědy se zdá paradoxní obzvláště v této době, kdy vizualita dominuje společnosti., This article deals with the position of visual anthropology in the Czech Republic and Slovakia in relation to the scientometric evaluation of science and art. The text points out that, although the field and its (audio) visual outputs are recognized as relevant in the West, visual anthropology is still struggling for recognition in the Czech-Slovak area. The Czech methodology of science evaluation is still based on publications and audiovisual outputs are marginalized. The authors of the text claim that the evaluation of science in the Czech Republic and Slovakia is dominated by logocentrism, which seems to be paradoxical at the present time, in which visuality dominates society. The text also shows that the evaluation of academic outputs set in this way disadvantages visual anthropologists in the processes of habilitations and awarding professorships.

“Big” digital behavioral data increasingly allows large-scale and high-resolution analyses of the behavior and performance of persons or aggregated identities in whole fields. Often the desired system of study is only a subset of a larger database. The task of drawing a field boundary is complicated because socio-cultural systems are highly overlapping. Here, I propose a sociologically enhanced information retrieval method to delineate fields that is based on the reproductive mechanism of fields, able to account for field heterogeneity, and generally applicable also outside scientometric, e.g., in social media, contexts. The method is demonstrated in a delineation of the multidisciplinary and very heterogeneous Social Network Science field using the Web of Science database. The field consists of 25,760 publications and has a historical dimension (1916–2012). This set has high face validity and exhibits expected statistical properties like systemic growth and power law size distributions. Data is clean and disambiguated. The dataset with 45,580 author names and 23,026 linguistic concepts is publically available and supposed to enable high-quality analyses of an evolving complex socio-cultural system.

A potential motivation for scientists to deposit their scientific work as preprints is to enhance its citation or social impact. In this study we assessed the citation and altmetric advantage of bioRxiv, a preprint server for the biological sciences. We retrieved metadata of all bioRxiv preprints deposited between November 2013 and December 2017, and matched them to articles that were subsequently published in peer-reviewed journals. Citation data from Scopus and altmetric data from Altmetric.com were used to compare citation and online sharing behavior of bioRxiv preprints, their related journal articles, and nondeposited articles published in the same journals. We found that bioRxiv-deposited journal articles had sizably higher citation and altmetric counts compared to nondeposited articles. Regression analysis reveals that this advantage is not explained by multiple explanatory variables related to the articles’ publication venues and authorship. Further research will be required to establish whether such an effect is causal in nature. bioRxiv preprints themselves are being directly cited in journal articles, regardless of whether the preprint has subsequently been published in a journal. bioRxiv preprints are also shared widely on Twitter and in blogs, but remain relatively scarce in mainstream media and Wikipedia articles, in comparison to peer-reviewed journal articles.

Citation metrics have value because they aim to make scientific assessment a level playing field, but urgent transparency-based adjustments are necessary to ensure that measurements yield the most accurate picture of impact and excellence. One problematic area is the handling of self-citations, which are either excluded or inappropriately accounted for when using bibliometric indicators for research evaluation. Here, in favor of openly tracking self-citations we report on self-referencing behavior among various academic disciplines as captured by the curated Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database. Specifically, we examined the behavior of 385,616 authors grouped into 15 subject areas like Biology, Chemistry, Science & Technology, Engineering, and Physics. These authors have published 3,240,973 papers that have accumulated 90,806,462 citations, roughly five percent of which are self-citations. Up until now, very little is known about the buildup of self-citations at the author-level and in field-specific contexts. Our view is that hiding self-citation data is indefensible and needlessly confuses any attempts to understand the bibliometric impact of one’s work. Instead we urge academics to embrace visibility of citation data in a community of peers, which relies on nuance and openness rather than curated scorekeeping.

With the aim of developing a reflection on the documental level of geography, and to understand how physical and human geography are materially related, this paper analyzes an ample spectrum of indexed literature from a distant reading perspective based on scientometric tools. Moving under a sociology of science lens, the study address (I) the citational relationship between the two fields, and (II) how scientific articles in geography are mobilised and combined with different categories of research journals in a cognate scientific field. The study relies on science mapping techniques to chart, describe, and visualize the citational relationships among journals and fields.

During the 19th century, and at the beginning of the 20th century, the inventory and cataloging of articles was accompanied by indexes of scientific production by author. It is the use of citation as an indicator of influence, which paves the way for bibliometrics, and for quantitative studies of science. We present the main elements of the debate relating to citation rates and impact factors, and the use of numerical indicators in evaluation processes. The development of Open Science opens a new stage, with the demand for responsible use of bibliometrics and quantitative data.

Möglich ist dies u. a.

OA has often been suggested as a potential solution to several problems related to the scientific publishing industry: a minority of for profit editors accounting for half of the entire publishing industry, important budget cuts and rising subscription prices in academic libraries, and access to knowledge in lower-income countries. The OA movement originated from the growing demand to make research more accessible worldwide. It has been gaining a lot of momentum, with the implementation of several OA policies by funding institutions and the development of several new platforms (e.g., Open Journal System, African Journals Online, SciELO, and Érudit) that facilitate the publication of OA content at low cost. Studies have shown that between 20% and 50% of research articles are currently available online at no cost, but only a few have compared the use of OA literature at the country level and from a worldwide perspective. Along these lines, this master’s thesis aims to provide a global picture of the current state of OA adoption by countries, using two indicators: publications in OA and references to articles in OA. We find that, on average, low-income countries are publishing and citing OA at the highest rate, while upper-middle income countries and higher income countries publish and cite OA articles at below world-average rates. These results highlight national differences in OA uptake and suggest that more OA initiatives at the institutional, national and international levels are needed to support a wider adoption of open scholarship.

- Abstract
The article presents some elements on the history of scientometrics and bibliometrics and tries to help clarify the differences between the two sciences. Aiming at measuring the results of science through mathematical methods, scientometrics and bibliometrics play an increasingly important role in the context of the increasing volume of scientific literature. While scientometrics is, or should be, a basic tool in national and international science policy development, it deals with issues such as research budget analysis, the economic impact of scientific activities, science management, the analysis of the efficiency of investments in science and technology, research trends, estimation of research evaluation methods etc., the field of bibliometrics is restricted to the quantitative analysis of the published scientific literature, made up from the perspective of the number of citations and the number of published documents. While the two sciences offer accurate data, they can lead to erroneous conclusions, especially when the nature of the provided information is not fully understood or the applicability of the indicators is artificially extended to areas where intellectual performance is difficult to measure in terms of received citations or written articles in a year. However, excepting certain disadvantages, bibliometrics and scientometrics provide us with a lot of information without which the assessment of science would be a process more prone to errors or subjectivity. Based on this information, decisions can be made and science management strategies can be formulated, provided the limits of the obtained information are understood. And for the average researcher or student, bibliometric platforms are an excellent tool for retrieving information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

37. The Ironic Becomings of Reflexivity - The Case of Citation Theory in Bibliometrics

- Abstract
An attempt to capture the meaning of the term reflexive is incompletable. Rather than thinking of reflexivity as something fixed, it may be more productive to think of reflexivity as a process of becoming. Based on a conceptual framework inspired by Deleuze, the following contribution addresses notions of reflexivity between sociology and bibliometrics from a perspective of reflexive bibliometrics by a partial reconstruction, or, more precisely, a reconstructive rereading of the history of citation theory. I argue that following the procedural heuristic I will propose may be productive by neither framing reflexivity as an issue of static being of a discipline by asking "How reflexive are we?", nor an imperative of “We should be more reflexive!” but rather by asking "How and why do we want to become more reflexive by seeking connections to different perspectives?". Finally, I will discuss the potential of irony as a distancing function complementary to objectivity when applying the framework to your own discipline.

- Abstract
In recent years, increased stakeholder pressure to transition research to Open Access has led to many journals converting, or ‘flipping’, from a closed access (CA) to an open access (OA) publishing model. Changing the publishing model can influence the decision of authors to submit their papers to a journal, and increased article accessibility may influence citation behaviour. In this paper we aimed to understand how flipping a journal to an OA model influences the journal’s future publication volumes and citation impact. We analysed two independent sets of journals that had flipped to an OA model, one from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and one from the Open Access Directory (OAD), and compared their development with two respective control groups of similar journals. For bibliometric analyses, journals were matched to the Scopus database. We assessed changes in the number of articles published over time, as well as two citation metrics at the journal and article level: the normalised impact factor (IF) and the average relative citations (ARC), respectively. Our results show that overall, journals that flipped to an OA model increased their publication output compared to journals that remained closed. Mean normalised IF and ARC also generally increased following the flip to an OA model, at a greater rate than was observed in the control groups. However, the changes appear to vary largely by scientific discipline. Overall, these results indicate that flipping to an OA publishing model can bring positive changes to a journal.

39. Drawing impossible boundaries: field delineation of Social Network Science

- Abstract
"Big" digital behavioral data increasingly allows large-scale and high-resolution analyses of the behavior and performance of persons or aggregated identities in whole fields. The field consists of 25,760 publications and has a historical dimension (1916-2012).

- Abstract
An increasing number of scientific publications are created in open and transparent peer review models: a submission is published first, and then reviewers are invited, or a submission is reviewed in a closed environment but then these reviews are published with the final article, or combinations of these. Reasons for open peer review include giving better credit to reviewers, and enabling readers to better appraise the quality of a publication. In most cases, the full, unstructured text of an open review is published next to the full, unstructured text of the article reviewed. This approach prevents human readers from getting a quick impression of the quality of parts of an article, and it does not easily support secondary exploitation, e.g., for scientometrics on reviews. While document formats have been proposed for publishing structured articles including reviews, integrated tool support for entire open peer review workflows resulting in such documents is still scarce. We present AR-Annotator, the Automatic Article and Review Annotator which employs a semantic information model of an article and its reviews, using semantic markup and unique identifiers for all entities of interest. The fine-grained article structure is not only exposed to authors and reviewers but also preserved in the published version. We publish articles and their reviews in a Linked Data representation and thus maximise their reusability by third party applications. We demonstrate this reusability by running quality-related queries against the structured representation of articles and their reviews.

- Abstract
Employing bibliometric approaches and network analysis this article seeks to explore the cooperation structures within German Political Science. We analyze a dataset consisting of 5279 articles that were published between 2000 and 2011 in 20 journals. We find an extreme unequal distribution of productivity as well as a trend towards more coauthorships - although single authors are still the norm. The network we constructed based on joint publications is in many aspects similar to those structures known from the natural sciences, but it is much smaller and more fragmented - we only find three larger components (49-112 authors). Finally we measure the importance of a single author within the network using a newly developed index that takes account of a persons' productivity as well as her position within the network. In 2013, Blaise Cronin expressed the question, whether there is such a thing as a canonicity of information science. He proposed that to determine the canonicity indexes of names and subjects of relevant textbooks have to be evaluated. Basis of the study were publications from the Web of Science category Information Science & Library Science, as well as nine chosen elementary textbooks of Information Science. The data selection from Web of Science contained more than 324,000 publications. During the scientometric analysis citations, publications and topics were evaluated. In addition to the classic evaluation of database records, for the first time an index analysis was performed on the textbooks. The different results were merged to create a common canonicity of Information Science. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, increased stakeholder pressure to transition research to Open Access has led to many journals converting, or 'flipping', from a closed access (CA) to an open access (OA) publishing model. Changing the publishing model can influence the decision of authors to submit their papers to a journal, and increased article accessibility may influence citation behaviour. In this paper we aimed to understand how flipping a journal to an OA model influences the journal's future publication volumes and citation impact. Overall, these results indicate that flipping to an OA publishing model can bring positive changes to a journal., 16 pages, 5 figures, Accepted in Scientometrics

Google Scholar (GS) is a free tool that may be used by researchers to analyze citations, to find appropriate literature or to evaluate the quality of an author or a contender for tenure, promotion, a faculty position, funding or research grants. GS has become a major bibliographic and citation database. Following the literature, databases such as PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus or Web of Science can be used in place of GS because they are more reliable. The aim of this study is to examine the accuracy of citation data collected from GS and provide a comprehensive description of the errors and miscounts identified. For this purpose, 281 documents that cited two specific works were retrieved from the Publish or Perish software and examined. This work studied the false positive issue inherent in the analysis of neuroimaging data. The results reveal an unprecedented error rate: 279 of 281 examined references (99.3%) contain at least one error.
