The SwissFEL light-facility will provide coherent X-rays in the wavelength region 7-0.7 nm and 0.7-0.1 nm. In SwissFEL, view-screens and wire-scanners will be used to monitor the transverse profile of a 200/10pC electron beam with a normalized emittance of 0.4/0.2 mm.mrad and a final energy of 5.8 GeV. Compared to view screens, wire-scanners offer a quasi-non-destructive monitoring of the beam transverse profile without suffering from possible micro-bunching of the electron beam. The SwissFEL Injector Test Facility operated at the Paul Scherrer Institute between 2010 and 2014, serving as a pilot plant and testbed for the development and realization of SwissFEL, the X-ray Free-Electron Laser facility under construction at the same institute. The test facility consisted of a laser-driven rf electron gun followed by an S-band booster linac, a magnetic bunch compression chicane and a diagnostic section including a transverse deflecting rf cavity. It delivered electron bunches of up to 200 pC charge and up to 250 MeV beam energy at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. The measurements performed at the test facility not only demonstrated the beam parameters required to drive the first stage of an FEL facility, but also led to significant advances in instrumentation technologies, beam characterization methods and the generation, transport and compression of ultra-low-emittance beams. We give a comprehensive overview of the commissioning experience of the principal subsystems and the beam physics measurements performed during the operation of the test facility, including the results of the test of an in-vacuum undulator prototype generating radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet and optical range., Comment: 60 pages, 70 figures; final version as published, except with table of contents and Fig. 68 in full resolution

Using muon spin rotation (muSR) we investigated the magnetic and superconducting properties of a series of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals with 0 =< x =< 0.15. Our study details how the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed upon Co substitution and how it coexists with superconductivity. In the non-superconducting samples at 0 < x < 0.04 the antiferromagnetic order parameter is only moderately suppressed. With the onset of superconductivity this suppression becomes faster and it is most rapid between x = 0.045 and 0.05. As was previously demonstrated by muSR at x = 0.055 [P. Marsik et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 57001 (2010)], the strongly weakened antiferromagnetic order is still a bulk phenomenon that competes with superconductivity. The comparison with neutron diffraction data suggests that the antiferromagnetic order remains commensurate whereas the amplitude exhibits a spatial variation that is likely caused by the randomly distributed Co atoms. A different kind of magnetic order that was also previously identified [C. Bernhard et al., New J. Phys. 11, 055050 (2009)] occurs at 0.055 < x < 0.075 where Tc approaches the maximum value. The magnetic order develops here only in parts of the sample volume and it seems to cooperate with superconductivity since its onset temperature coincides with Tc. Even in the strongly overdoped regime at x = 0.11, where the static magnetic order has disappeared, we find that the low energy spin fluctuations are anomalously enhanced below Tc. These findings point toward a drastic change in the relationship between the magnetic and superconducting orders from a competitive one in the strongly underdoped regime to a constructive one in near optimally and overdoped samples., Comment: 33 Pages, 9 Figures

Electron spin relaxation rate (eSR) is investigated on several organic semiconductors of different morphologies and molecular structures, using avoided level crossing muon spectroscopy as a local spin probe. We find that two functionalized acenes (polycrystalline tri(isopropyl)silyl-pentacene and amorphous 5,6,11,12-tetraphenyltetracene) exhibit eSRs with an Arrhenius-like temperature dependence, each with two characteristic energy scales similar to those expected from vibrations. Polycrystalline tris(8-hydroxyquinolate)gallium shows a similar behavior. The observed eSR for these molecules is no greater than 0.85 MHz at 300 K. The variety of crystal structures and transport regimes that these molecules possess, as well as the local nature of the probe, strongly suggest an intra-molecular phenomenon general to many organic semiconductors, contrasting the commonly assumed spin relaxation models based on inter-molecular charge carrier transport.

We report muon spin rotation (muSR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy experiments on underdoped BaFe1.89Co0.11As2 which show that bulk magnetism and superconductivity (SC) coexist and compete on the nanometer length scale. Our combined data reveal a bulk magnetic order, likely due to an incommensurate spin density wave (SDW), which develops below Tmag \approx 32 K and becomes reduced in magnitude (but not in volume) below Tc = 21.7 K. A slowly fluctuating precursor of the SDW seems to develop alrady below the structural transition at Ts \approx 50 K. The bulk nature of SC is established by the muSR data which show a bulk SC vortex lattice and the IR data which reveal that the majority of low-energy states is gapped and participates in the condensate at T << Tc.

We report an inelastic-neutron-scattering and muon-spin-relaxation study of the effect of 2% spinless (Zn) impurities on the magnetic order and dynamics of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$, an underdoped high-temperature superconductor that exhibits a prominent spin-pseudogap in its normal state. Zn substitution induces static magnetic order at low temperatures and triggers a large-scale spectral-weight redistribution from the magnetic resonant mode at 38 meV into uniaxial, incommensurate spin excitations with energies well below the spin-pseudogap. These observations indicate a competition between incommensurate magnetic order and superconductivity close to a quantum critical point. Comparison to prior data on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$ suggests that this behavior is universal for the layered copper oxides and analogous to impurity-induced magnetic order in one-dimensional quantum magnets.

With infrared ellipsometry and transport measurements we investigated the electrons at the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. We obtained a sheet carrier density of Ns~5-9x 10E13 cm^-2, an effective mass of m*~3m_e, and a strongly frequency dependent mobility. The latter are similar as in bulk SrTi1-xNbxO3 and therefore suggestive of polaronic correlations of the confined carriers. We also determined the vertical density profile which has a strongly asymmetric shape with a rapid initial decay over the first 2 nm and a pronounced tail that extends to about 11 nm., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 EPAPS file (3 figures)

We present a muon spin rotation (\muSR) study of the magnetic and superconducting properties of single crystals of electron-doped BaFe2-xCoxAs2 with x=0.08, 0.20, and 0.25 (Tc=9, 25 and 20K) and of polycrystalline hole-doped Pr1-xSrxFeAsO with x=0 and 0.2 (Tc=15 K). In the former series we observe some interesting parallels with the electron doped SmFeAsO1-xFx 1111-type system [A.J. Drew et al., to appear in Nature Materials 2009 and arXiv:0807.4876]. In particular, we obtain evidence that strongly disordered static magnetism coexists with superconductivity on a microscopic scale in underdoped samples and even at optimum doping there is a slowing down (or enhancement) of dynamic magnetic correlations below Tc\approx25K. To the contrary, for the hole-doped Pr1-xSrxFeAsO samples we obtain evidence for a mesoscopic phase segregation into regions with nearly unperturbed AF order and others that are non magnetic and most likely superconducting. The observed trend resembles the one that was previously reported for hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 [A.A. Aczel et al., Phys. Rev. B 78, 214503 (2008); J.T. Park et al., arXiv:0811.2224] and thus seems to be fairly common in these hole doped systems., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Here we present a combined study of the slightly underdoped novel pnictide superconductor Ba(1-x)K(x)Fe(2)As(2) by means of X-ray powder diffraction, neutron scattering, muon spin rotation (muSR), and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). Commensurate static magnetic order sets in below Tm ~ 70 K as inferred from the emergence of the magnetic (1 0 -3) reflection in the neutron scattering data and from the observation of damped oscillations in the zero-field-muSR asymmetry. Transverse-field muSR below Tc shows a coexistence of magnetically ordered and non-magnetic states, which is also confirmed by MFM imaging. We explain such coexistence by electronic phase separation into antiferromagnetic and superconducting/normal state regions on a lateral scale of several tens of nanometers. Our findings indicate that such mesoscopic phase separation can be considered an intrinsic property of some iron pnictide superconductors.

The properties of the electron source define the ultimate limit of the beam quality in linear accelerators like Free Electron Lasers (FEL). The goal is to develop an electron gun delivering beam emittance lower than current state of the art. Such a gun should reduce the cost and size of an X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL). In this paper we present two concepts of field emitter cathodes which could potentially produce low emittance beam. The first challenging parameter for such cathode is to emit peak current as high as 5 A. This is the minimum current requirement for the XFEL concept from Paul Scherrer Institut.1 Maximum current of 0.12 A and 0.58 A have been reached respectively with field emitter arrays (FEA) and single needle cathodes.
