Abstract

This article discusses the use of microaxial flow pumps (mAFPs) to support patients awaiting heart transplantation in Germany. The study conducted a retrospective analysis of 16 patients who received mAFP support while on the heart transplant waiting list. The majority of patients were male and had dilated cardiomyopathy as the main cause of heart failure. The study found that the use of mAFPs in Germany is feasible and safe, with prolonged support times not associated with device complications. The mAFPs can be used as a bridge to transplantation as long as right ventricular function is preserved. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

This article compares the outcomes of early (¿24 hours) versus late (>24 hours) surgical revascularization in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and normal or diminished left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). The study analyzed data from 1227 AMI patients and used propensity score matching to create balanced subgroups. The results showed that early revascularization did not improve mortality or long-term survival in either group, but it did significantly enhance LVEF in patients with reduced baseline levels. The authors suggest that further randomized trials are needed to determine if early surgical intervention can benefit AMI patients beyond the initial hours postinfarction. Abstract

A newly developed tool to simulate a tokamak full discharge is presented. The tokamak 'flight simulator' Fenix couples the tokamak control system with a fast and reduced plasma model, which is realistic enough to take into account several of the plasma non-linearities. A distinguishing feature of this modeling tool is that it only requires the pulse schedule (PS) as input to the simulator. The output is a virtual realization of the full discharge, whose time traces can then be used to judge if the PS satisfies control/physics goals or needs to be revised. This tool is envisioned for routine use in the control room before each pulse is performed, but can also be used off-line to correct PS in advance, or to develop and validate reduced models, control schemes for future machines like a commercial reactor, simulating realistic actuators and sensors behavior.

Abstract

B‌lending beds are coming into increasing use in the cement, iron and steel and other industries. Blending beds are used for storage, mixing and homogenisation. To achieve these objectives, blending-bed facilities are created in a number of configurations, such as circular and longitudinal blending beds, for example, either enclosed or outdoors, while one of a number of possible stacking patterns can be selected. For the most frequently used configuration, the longitudinal stack, using the 'chevron' stacking variant, a design algorithm on the basis of a computing program is examined. In addition to determining the dimensions, the number of layers necessary for homogenisation is calculated on the basis of our own investigation data.
