The series takes account of this fact and provides a platform for approaches within synchronous linguistics as well as interdisciplinary works with a linguistic focus which devise new ways of working empirically and develop new data-based methods and theoretical models for empirical linguistic analyses.

Abstract

Oft wird davon ausgegangen, dass die deutschen Modal- oder Abtönungspartikeln typische Mittelfeldelemente seien. In Ergänzungsfragen können sie aber auch unmittelbar nach dem Fragewort erscheinen und stehen dann im Vorfeld. Dies scheint eine allgemeinere Tendenz zu sein, der nicht nur die Modalpartikeln, sondern auch andere Abtönungsformen wie die IAW-Strukturen unterliegen. Diese Besonderheit im Stellungsverhalten der Abtönungsformen wurde bislang nur in direkten Ergänzungsfragen untersucht. Résumé français - La présente contribution vise à mieux cerner le statut de la gestualité en grammaire. A cet effet sont fournies deux études de cas, sur les gestes co-grammaticaux indexicaux et iconiques. L’idée centrale de cette grammaire multimodale est que mots et gestes, au sens large, appartenant à des canaux sémiotiques à première vue incompatibles, se doivent d’être intégrées dans une seule construction, fidèle à l’hypothèse cognitiviste que les constructions grammaticales assemblent des éléments linguistiques matériels en une seule représentation conceptuelle schématique. Cette intégration du geste, situé traditionnellement en marge de la construction grammaticale, répondrait ainsi à une demande posée à la linguistique cognitive, et plus particulièrement aux grammaires de construction, de la part des études sur la gestualité. Abstract in English On the basis of two empirical case studies, one on indexical and one on iconic co-grammatical gestures, this contribution aims to mark out the status of gesture in grammar. The main idea of this multimodal grammar is that words and gestures, although belonging to two distinct semiotic channels, have to be integrated into one single construction. This is in line with the cognitivist hypothesis that grammatical constructions combine linguistic elements into one single schematic conceptual representation. 29. Modal particle meanings: New insights from gesture research.

Abstract

One of the challenges of modal particle research is the search for appropriate ways to describe the meanings these particles convey. As these meanings are subtle and situated at the abstract and non-propositional level of intersubjective meaning making, the function of the particles is notoriously hard to pin down. As a consequence, scholars also disagree on what the precise relation between different but related particles is. In this paper, I show that gesture analysis can shed new light on these issues. By looking at the gestures used with the German particles denn, ja, doch, eben, einfach, and halt, the paper illustrates how studying gestures can lead to a better understanding of the particles and their mutual relations by showing how gesture data can offer new evidence for existing hypotheses and help in finding a way out of matters of discussion. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird auf die französischen Äquivalente der deutschen Modalpartikelebenin Assertionen eingegangen. Anhand der Daten eines literarischen Übersetzungskorpus wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie sich diese Partikel ins Französische übersetzen lässt, und was aufgrund dieser Übersetzungen über die deutsche Partikel ausgesagt werden kann. Abstract

In hun analyse van het Nederlandse bijwoord ‘anders’ onderscheiden Smessaert & Van Belle (2010) drie grote subtypes m.b.v. de concepten van comparatief en foriciteit. Het intraclausale Type I anders is [+comparatief/+forisch] en in essentie een bijwoord van wijze. Het sterk interclausale Type II anders is [-comparatief/+forisch] en vervult de rol van een voegwoordelijk bijwoord. Het zwak-interclausale Type III anders, ten slotte, is [-comparatief/-forisch] en gedraagt zich als een attitudineel discourse markeerder. In deze bijdrage bestuderen we de Duitse pendanten van de verschillende types anders in het Nederlands. De voorgestelde driedeling blijkt grosso modo te corresponderen met een Duitse vertaling als anders voor type I, als ‘sonst’ voor type II en een vertaling voor type III die noch van anders noch van ‘sonst’ gebruik maakt. In sommige gevallen blijkt een vertaling zowel met anders als met ‘sonst’ mogelijk te zijn. Het onderzoek is gebaseerd op een parallel corpus van Nederlandse romans met hun Duitse vertaling.
