Teacher preparation programs and school districts annually invest significant personnel and money to support cohorts of preservice teachers and new first-year teachers. Despite this support, the transition from teacher preparation to the first years of teaching remains challenging. In this article, the authors discuss the impact of a New Teacher Learning Community (NTLC) on supporting the social emotional learning (SEL) of first-year teachers. The NTLC encouraged new K-12 teachers to engage in community building with peers, reflective thinking, and collaborative problem solving. Data included a satisfaction survey and semistructured interviews with participants. New K-12 teachers who participated in the NTLC (n = 21) found increased confidence around key SEL constructs, including relational skills through fostering a sense of belonging and communication abilities and decision-making through practice with problem solving. During the spring of 2020, school districts across the United States were required to shift to distance learning modalities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic forced schools to close their doors to face-to-face instruction and quickly shift to an online format. While online education is prevalent in the United States, it only serves about 2% to 4% of the total K-12 population. Literature related to K-12 online physical education is sparse and there are concerns regarding accountability. This study used a grounded theory approach and collected data through open-ended questions as part of an online survey. Data clearly indicate that physical educators need assistance in the transition to distance learning, especially in developing plans for teaching motor skills and online pedagogies. Many of the teachers in this study expressed frustration with how their school leadership handled the shift to distance learning, partially due to the marginalization of the subject matter. Physical educators need the tools to expand their pedagogical technological knowledge as well as resources to advocate for themselves and their subject during adverse situations in schools. The shift to distance learning has the potential to have positive outcomes, as teachers were forced out of their comfort zones to learn new technology skills that may translate to enhanced learning in the faceto-face environment. The coronavirus pandemic has placed caregiving at the top of many Americans' minds. Recent upticks in teleworking arrangements, along with the widespread shock to school and childcare situations this past spring, have raised important questions about how caregivers and working families arc faring during the pandemic. Accordingly, the American Enterprise Institute commissioned a survey of 3,518 working-age adults in late July 2020 to better understand the paid leave landscape available to working families during the COVID-19 pandemic and how the pandemic has shaped childcare needs and arrangements. Survey results suggest that about one in five workers with a job before the pandemic had a household member who took leave from work for their own illness, to care for an ill loved one, or for childcare reasons since the pandemic started. Respondents with a child in the household were much more likely to report household leave-taking than were those without a child. While most leave takers received partial or full pay during their time off, adults from lower-income households were less likely to receive pay. Despite high levels of reported leave-taking and government efforts to expand paid leave to some workers, 20 percent of working-age adults reported needing time off from work since the pandemic started but not taking leave. Working-age adults with children in the household and those with a low household income were more likely to report an unmet need for leave. The most common reasons people gave for an unmet need for leave were inability to afford a loss of income, high workload, and fear of job loss or negative action by an employer. Survey results suggest a marked instability in parents' childcare arrangements extending into late July 2020. More than half of parents of young children (age 0-5) who used childcare before the pandemic did not have childcare in place by July 2020 or were using a different childcare provider. This instability appears to have disproportionately affected mothers' employment during the pandemic. The full-time employment rate among mothers of young children who used childcare before the pandemic decreased 25 percentage points by late July 2020 compared to before the pandemic. In comparison, the percentage of fathers who used childcare before the pandemic who were working full-time decreased 6 percentage points by late July. School closures appeared to play a large role as well. Among parents of school-age children, full-time employment fell 20 percentage points among mothers and 10 percentage points among fathers between the start of the pandemic and late July. These survey findings call for policymakers to consider two immediate actions to avoid long-term labor force participation problems. First, Congress should allocate additional funding toward childcare providers to help them stay open and offer services to more families. Second, Congress should pass additional funding for school districts to help them reopen and offer in-person learning. Survey results also suggest that policymakers should attempt to understand why the paid leave provisions in the Families First Coronavirus Response Act failed to meet the needs of working-age adults, especially those with children.
