Astrophysics - Abstract
The COMPTEL unidentified source GRO J1411-64 was observed by INTEGRAL, and its central part, also by XMM-Newton. The data analysis shows no hint for new detections at hard X-rays. The upper limits in flux herein presented constrain the energy spectrum of whatever was producing GRO J1411-64, imposing, in the framework of earlier COMPTEL observations, the existence of a peak in power output located somewhere between 300-700 keV for the so-called low state. The Circinus Galaxy is the only source detected within the 4$\sigma$ location error of GRO J1411-64, but can be safely excluded as the possible counterpart: the extrapolation of the energy spectrum is well below the one for GRO J1411-64 at MeV energies. 22 significant sources (likelihood $> 10$) were extracted and analyzed from XMM-Newton data. Only one of these sources, XMMU J141255.6-635932, is spectrally compatible with GRO J1411-64 although the fact the soft X-ray observations do not cover the full extent of the COMPTEL source position uncertainty make an association hard to quantify and thus risky. The unique peak of the power output at high energies (hard X-rays and gamma-rays) resembles that found in the SED seen in blazars or microquasars. However, an analysis using a microquasar model consisting on a magnetized conical jet filled with relativistic electrons which radiate through synchrotron and inverse Compton scattering with star, disk, corona and synchrotron photons shows that it is hard to comply with all observational constrains. This and the non-detection at hard X-rays introduce an a-posteriori question mark upon the physical reality of this source, which is discussed in some detail.

Astrophysics - Abstract
According to standard models supernovae produce radioactive $^{44}$Ti, which should be visible in gamma-rays following decay to $^{44}$Ca for a few centuries. $^{44}Ti production is believed to be the source of cosmic $^{44}$Ca, whose abundance is well established. Yet, gamma-ray telescopes have not seen the expected young remnants of core collapse events. The $^{44}$Ti mean life of $\tau \simeq$ 89 y and the Galactic supernova rate of $\simeq$ 3/100 y imply $\simeq$ several detectable $^{44}Ti gamma-ray sources, but only one is clearly seen, the 340-year-old Cas A SNR. Furthermore, supernovae which produce much $^{44}Ti are expected to occur primarily in the inner part of the Galaxy, where young massive stars are most abundant. Because the Galaxy is transparent to gamma-rays, this should be the dominant location of expected gamma-ray sources. Yet the Cas A SNR as the only one source is located far from the inner Galaxy (at longitude 112 degree). We evaluate the surprising absence of detectable supernovae from the past three centuries. We discuss whether our understanding of SN explosions, their $^{44}Ti yields, their spatial distributions, and statistical arguments can be stretched so that this apparent disagreement may be accommodated within reasonable expectations, or if we have to revise some or all of the above aspects to bring expectations in agreement with the observations. We conclude that either core collapse supernovae have been improbably rare in the Galaxy during the past few centuries, or $^{44}Ti-producing supernovae are atypical supernovae. We also present a new argument based on $^{44}$Ca/$^{40}$Ca ratios in mainstream SiC stardust grains that may cast doubt on massive-He-cap Type I supernovae as the source of most galactic $^{44}$Ca., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics 2006. Astrophysics - Abstract
We have investigated the MeV behaviour of the \gray blazars 3C~454.3 and CTA 102 by analyzing all COMPTEL observations of this sky region during the complete CGRO mission. Both sources are detected by COMPTEL at the upper COMPTEL energies; although their flux estimates may be uncertain by possible minor contribution of nearby unidentified EGRET \gray sources. While CTA 102 was only detected at energies above 10 MeV during the early mission, 3C~454.3 is most significantly detected in the COMPTEL 3-10 MeV band in the sum of all data. Time-resolved analyses indicate a weak (near COMPTEL threshold) but likely steady 3-10 MeV emission over years, being independent of the observed time variability at energies above 100 MeV as observed by EGRET. This energy-dependent variability behaviour suggests different emission mechanisms at work at the two bands. Putting the COMPTEL fluxes in multifrequency perspective (radio to \grays), reveals for both sources the typical two-hump blazar spectra, with a low-energy maximum around the IR and a high-energy maximum at MeV energies. The latter one dominates the energy output across the whole electro-magnetic spectrum. The results of our analyses are discussed in the framework of current blazar modeling., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Astrophysics - Abstract
The search for gamma-ray line emission from the radioactive decay of 60Fe figures among the prime scientific objectives of the INTEGRAL mission. 60Fe is believed to be primarily produced in core-collapse supernovae, although other sites, such as carbon deflagration supernovae or intermediate mass AGB stars have also been suggested. We present first results of our search for the 1173 and 1332 keV gamma-ray lines of 60Fe decay in the SPI data of the first mission year. So far we can only report upper flux limits whose levels are determined by systematic uncertainties in the treatment of the instrumental background. Once we understand the background uncertainties better, the SPI data should provide stringent constraints on 60Fe nucleosynthesis in our Galaxy., Comment: 5 pages, to appear in the Proceedings of the 5th INTEGRAL Workshop (Munich, Germany)

Astrophysics - Abstract
We provide first constraints on the morphology of the 511 keV line emission from the galactic centre region on basis of data taken with the spectrometer SPI on the INTEGRAL gamma-ray observatory. The data suggest an azimuthally symmetric galactic bulge component with FWHM of ~9 deg with a 2 sigma uncertainty range covering 6-18 deg. The 511 keV line flux in the bulge component amounts to (9.9+4.7-2.1) 10e-4 ph cm-2 s-1. No evidence for a galactic disk component has been found so far; upper 2 sigma flux limits in the range (1.4-3.4) 10e-3 ph cm-2 s-1 have been obtained that depend on the assumed disk morphology. These limits correspond to lower limits on the bulge-to-disk ratio of 0.3-0.6., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Astrophysics - Abstract
We report the detection of an unidentified gamma-ray source near the Galactic plane by the COMPTEL experiment aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. The source is detected at a significance level of ~ 7.2 sigma in the energy range 1-3 MeV and at ~ 4.6 sigma in the lower 0.75-1 MeV band in the time period March to July 1995. At energies above 3 MeV are only marginal hints or upper limits obtained. The MeV spectrum has a soft shape. Strong flux variability is found within one year at energies below 3 MeV. Possible counterparts of galactic and extragalactic nature are discussed., Comment: 7 pages including 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Astrophysics - Abstract
We report results of observations and analyses on the gamma-ray blazar PKS 1622-297, with emphasis on the COMPTEL data (0.75 - 30 MeV) collected between April 1991 and November 1997. PKS 1622-297 was detected as a source of gamma-rays by the EGRET experiment aboard CGRO in 1995 during a gamma-ray outburst at energies above 100 MeV lasting for five weeks. In this time period the blazar was significantly (~ 5.9 sigma) detected by COMPTEL at 10-30 MeV. At lower COMPTEL energies the detection is marginal, resulting in a hard MeV spectrum. The combined COMPTEL/EGRET energy spectrum shows a break at MeV energies. The broad-band spectrum (radio - gamma-rays) shows that the gamma-ray emission dominates the overall power output. On top of the 5-week gamma-ray outburst, EGRET detected a huge flare lasting for > 1 day. Enhanced MeV emission (10 - 30 MeV) is found near the time of this flare, suggesting a possible time delay with respect to the emission above 100 MeV. Outside the 5-week flaring period in 1995, we do not detect MeV emission from PKS 1622-297., Comment: 10 pages including 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Astrophysics - Abstract
We present the time-averaged characteristics of the Crab pulsar in the 0.75-30 MeV energy window using data from the imaging Compton Telescope COMPTEL aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) collected over its 9 year mission. Exploiting the exceptionally long COMPTEL exposure on the Crab allowed us to derive significantly improved COMPTEL spectra for the Crab nebula and pulsar emissions, and for the first time to accurately determine at low-energy gamma-rays the pulse profile as a function of energy. These timing data, showing the well-known main pulse and second pulse at a phase separation of 0.4 with strong bridge emission, are studied together with data obtained at soft/hard X-ray energies from the ROSAT HRI, BeppoSAX LECS, MECS and PDS, at soft gamma-rays from CGRO BATSE and at high-energy gamma-rays from CGRO EGRET in order to obtain a coherent high-energy picture of the Crab pulsar from 0.1 keV up to 10 GeV., Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication in A&A main journal

Astrophysics - Abstract
PKS 1622-297 was detected as a source of gamma-rays by the EGRET experiment at energies above 100 MeV during a gamma-ray outburst June and July 1995. We analyzed the COMPTEL data (0.75 - 30 MeV) of this time period to investigate the behaviour of PKS 1622-297 at lower gamma-ray energies. The blazar is significantly (5.7 sigma) detected by COMPTEL at energies above 10 MeV. Below 10 MeV the source is only marginally (3-10 MeV band) or not (below 3 MeV) detected. The summed MeV spectrum shows a 'hard' (alpha < 2, ~ E^(-alpha)) shape and, if combined with the simultaneous EGRET spectrum, a spectral break at MeV energies is indicated. We present the COMPTEL results (light curves, spectra) and compare them to results derived in neighbouring energy bands, in particular to the EGRET one., Comment: 4 pages including 5 figures, accepted for publication in the proceedings of the 4th INTEGRAL workshop, to appear in ESA-SP series

Astrophysics - Abstract
We present a new algorithm, called Multiresolution Regularized Expectation Maximization (MREM), for the reconstruction of gamma-ray intensity maps from COMPTEL data. The algorithm is based on the iterative Richardson-Lucy scheme to which we added a wavelet thresholding step in order to eliminate image-noise in the reconstruction. The wavelet thresholding explicitly accounts for spatial correlations in the data, and adapts the angular resolution locally, depending on the significance of the signal in the data. We compare the performance of MREM to that of the maximum entropy and the Richardson-Lucy algorithms by means of Monte-Carlo simulations of COMPTEL 1.809 MeV gamma-ray line observations. The simulations demonstrate that the maximum entropy and Richardson-Lucy algorithms provide virtually identical reconstructions which are heavily disturbed by image noise. MREM largely suppresses this noise in the reconstructions, showing only the significant structures that are present in the data. Application of MREM to COMPTEL 1.8 MeV gamma-ray line data results in a 1.809 MeV sky map that is much smoother than the maximum entropy or Richardson-Lucy reconstructions presented previously. The essential features of this map are (1) an asymmetric galactic ridge emission reaching from l=45 deg to l=240 deg, (2) a bright localised emission feature in the Cygnus region around (l,b)=(80 deg,0 deg), (3) two emission spots at l=317 deg and l=332 deg situated in the galactic plane, and (4) an extended emission region around (l,b)=(160 deg, 0 deg). Comparison of the MREM map to the simulated reconstructions demonstrates that the 1.809 MeV emission is confined to the galactic plane., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, A&A, in press

Astrophysics - Abstract
The shield of the INTEGRAL spectrometer provides a large detection area with a wide field-of-view. Calculations have been performed to check whether the temporal analysis of the counting rate of the SPI anticoincidence allows the detection of explosions of novae. The background rate of the shield as well as its response to gamma-ray have been modelled with monte-carlo simulations. Accounting for uncertainties in the rate of novae, their distribution in the Galaxy and their light curves in hard X-ray domain, the number of nova explosions detectable with this method during the INTEGRAL mission, is estimated. Such observationnal mode will allow to improve our knowledge on nuclear runaway in novae. Since the maximum of magnitude in the visible happens later than in gamma-ray, SPI will provide alert for optical observations., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in "3rd INTEGRAL Workshop: The Extreme Universe", Taormina (Italy)

Astrophysics - Abstract
Deconvolving COMPTEL gamma-ray data into images presents a major methodological challenge. We developed a new algorithm called Multiresolution Regularized Expectation Maximization (MREM), which explicitly accounts for spatial correlations in the image by using wavelets (Dixon et al. 1998). We demonstrate that MREM largely suppresses image noise in the reconstruction, showing only significant structures that are present in the data. Application to 1.8 MeV data results in a sky map that is much smoother than the maximum entropy reconstructions presented previously, but it shows the same characteristic emission features which have been established earlier., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, Proc. of the 3rd INTEGRAL workshop, Taormina

Astrophysics - Abstract
We examined the question of a possible correlation between 1.8 MeV emission and intensity distributions observed at other wavelengths by comparing the 1.8 MeV data to an extended set of all-sky maps, covering the entire explored wavelength range from the radio band up to high-energy gamma-rays. This analysis revealed that tracers of the old stellar population or the local interstellar medium provide only a poor description of the data. Tracers of the young stellar population considerably improve the fit. Residuals are minimized for the free-free emission map obtained by the DMR at microwave wavelengths and the 158 um fine-structure line map of C+ observed by FIRAS. Within the statistics of the present data, both maps provide an overall satisfactory fit. We therefore conclude that adequate tracers of 26Al sources have now been identified. Implications for 26Al source types are discussed (see also Knodlseder, these proceedings)., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, Proc. of the 3rd INTEGRAL workshop, Taormina

- Abstract
An increase in the demand for renewable energy is driving hydropower development and its integration with variable renewable energy sources. When hydropower is produced flexibly from hydropower plants, it causes rapid and frequent artificial flow fluctuations in rivers, a phenomenon known as hydropeaking. Hydropeaking and associated hydrological alterations cause multiple impacts on riverine habitats with cascading effects on ecosystem functioning and structure. Given the significance of its ecological and socio‐economic implications, mitigation of hydropeaking requires an inter‐ and transdisciplinary approach. An interdisciplinary network called HyPeak has been conceived to enrich international research initiatives and support hydropower planning and policy. HyPeak has been founded based on exchange and networking activities linking scientists from several countries where hydropeaking has been widespread for decades and numerous studies dedicated to the topic have been carried out. HyPeak aims to integrate members from other countries and continents in which hydropower production plays a relevant role, and grow to be a reference group that provides expert advice on the topic to policy‐makers, as well as researchers, stakeholders, and practitioners in the field of hydropeaking.

Growth functions frequently used in forestry have in common that among the model parameters to be estimated, only the asymptote is expressed in the dimensions of the input data. By contrast, parameters determining rate and shape of the curve often exhibit indefinite scales. This might cause problems in specifying adequate starting values and in parameter interpretation. We present a mathematical derivation to obtain a modified growth function based on the four-parameter Richards function. Two of the rate and shape parameters were replaced by new parameters directly related to the growth process: time of maximum growth and maximum growth rate. Both the original model and its modified form were fitted to individual-tree height-age data from the National Forest Inventory in Germany. The modified function has several advantages: (i) easier interpretability of model parameters, (ii) easier specification of starting values, (iii) improved linear behavior allowing for more reliable asymptotic inferences and for better convergence, and (iv) reduced correlation between model parameters. As a further benefit, the presented model allows for deriving biologically interpretable forms of the Gompertz function, the von Bertalanffy function, and the logistic function. Based on the results, we suggest using the modified function provided for further applications in growth modeling. Key words: reparametrization, nonlinearity, nonparametric bootstrap, individual-tree growth, Richards function. - Abstract
Background Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) describes heterogenous categories of chronic inflammatory rheumatic conditions of unknown origin in children and adolescents. Epidemiological data in the literature vary, depending on geographic location, ethnicity and the case definition used. We evaluated epidemiology, especially that of the categories defined by the International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR). Methods Using data from two different longitudinal health claims databases (WIG2 and InGef) from January 1(st), 2013 to December 31(st), 2019, we looked at patients aged 2 to 15 years old with at least one main inpatient or two secondary inpatient/verified outpatient ICD-10 diagnoses in at least two different quarters within one calendar year. We calculated prevalence and incidence (per 100,000 patients) and extrapolated data to the entire German population, looking at differences in gender and age groups. Additionally, we collected data on other not necessary comorbidities in our JIA patient population. Results Of the 3-4 million patients in the databases (respectively) in 2018, we found a total of 546 (WIG2) and 849 (InGef) patients that met our JIA case definition, with an incidence of 34 (29-41) and 60 (53-67) and prevalence of 133 (122-145) and 168 (157-179). Both incidence and prevalence throughout the age range were mostly higher in females than males, however the difference between females and males increased with increasing age. Of the ILAR categories, oligoarthritis was the most prevalent (70 and 91 per 100,000), with about half of our JIA patients in this category, followed by undifferentiated arthritis (49 and 56 cases per 100,000) and rheumatoid factor negative (RF-) (31 and 39 per 100,000). Incidence in 2018 was the highest in these three categories. Atopic dermatitis, vasomotor and allergic rhinitis, and uveitis were the pre-defined comorbidities seen most often in both databases. Conclusion This study provides current incidence

Trauma has become a hotly contested topic in literary studies. But interest in trauma is not new; its roots extend to the Romantic period, when novelists and the first psychiatrists influenced each others' investigations of the 'wounded mind'. This book looks back to these early attempts to understand trauma, reading a selection of Romantic novels in dialogue with Romantic and contemporary psychiatry. It then carries that dialogue forward to postmodern fiction, examining further how empirical approaches can deepen our theorizations of trauma. Within an interdisciplinary framework, this study reveals fresh insights into the poetics, politics, and ethics of trauma fiction.

The non-harmonic input voltage waveform becomes more frequent with the increasing interest in the multiphase machines; the injecting of higher harmonics is used to the decrease of the saturation of the machine. The non-harmonic flux linkage waveform affects the total iron losses. Presented paper deals with the usage of the modified Steinmetz equation (MSE) used to the calculation of the iron losses. The analytical-numerical tool including the nonlinearity of the magnetic circuit and the dynamic BH curve is presented. Different configurations of input voltage and magnetic material properties are analyzed and the results are compared with the analytical calculation and finite element analysis.

The VEGF system is essential for angiogenesis. VEGF overexpression frequently correlates with increased microvascularity and metastasis and decreased spontaneous apoptosis. Although a precise mechanism has not been established, studies suggest that VEGF expression is negatively regulated by p53, a master regulator and tumor suppressor. There are no reports of additional components of the VEGF signal transduction pathway being part of the p53 transcriptional network. A target of VEGF, the VEGF receptor 1/flt-1, can regulate growth and migration of endothelial cells and modulate angiogenesis. VEGF appears to be up-regulated in various cancers in which flt-1 may have a role in tumor progression and metastasis. We identified a C-to-T SNP upstream of the transcriptional start site in [approximately equal to] 6% of the people examined. The SNP is located within a putative p53 response element. Only the promoter with the T SNP (FLT1-T) was responsive to p53 when examined with reporter assays or by endogenous gene expression analysis in cell lines with different SNP status. In response to doxorubicin-induced DNA damage, there was clear allele discrimination based on p53 binding at the FLT1-T but not FLT1-C promoters as well as p53-dependent induction of flt-1 mRNA, which required the presence of FLT1-T. Our results establish that p53 can differentially stimulate transcription at a polymorphic variant of the flt-1 promoter and directly places the VEGF system in the p53 stress-response network via flt-1 in a significant fraction of the human population. We suggest that the p53-VEGF-flt-1 interaction is relevant to risks in angiogenesis-associated diseases, including cancer. single-nucleotide polymorphism | genotoxic stress | VEGF receptor | cancer cells

Bulgaria possesses one of the most independent judiciaries of the post-communist world. But the actual performance of the judiciary has failed to match expectations and it is believed to be in a state of crisis since a majority of Bulgarians view courts as unreliable, inefficient and corrupt, the outcome of litigation is highly unpredictable and corruption reaches the upper echelons of the judiciary.

A high dynamic range (HDR) CMOS image sensor architecture based on spiking pixel cells and its first implementation, a linear 128-pixel sensor, is presented. The pulse rate of the pixei cell is proportional to the local light intensity. The pixel cell features a pixel-level analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion by pulse counting. It allows to tradeoff conversion precision versus frame rate. Sample sensor chips have been manufactured using a 0.8-[micro]m double metal CMOS technology, and the test results confirming the feasibility of the chosen approach are reported. Index Terms--CMOS image sensors, high dynamic range, high value resolution, pixel-level analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion.

This thesis is a study of high energy inelastic processes. In particular, the main bulk of the text is a report of detailed calculations for some reactions leading to three particle final states. The first chapter is a brief review, of the main features of the experimental situation for high energy inelastic processes. Followed by a brief description of the main theoretical models used to explain the experimental data, viz the peripheral model in its particle exchange and Regge-exchange forms.

VGLL proteins are transcriptional co-factors that bind TEAD family transcription factors to regulate events ranging from wing development in fly, to muscle fibre composition and immune function in mice. Here, we characterise Vgll3 in skeletal muscle. We found that mouse Vgll3 was expressed at low levels in healthy muscle but that its levels increased during hypertrophy or regeneration; in humans, VGLL3 was highly expressed in tissues from patients with various muscle diseases, such as in dystrophic muscle and alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. Interaction proteomics revealed that VGLL3 bound TEAD1, TEAD3 and TEAD4 in myoblasts and/or myotubes. However, there was no interaction with proteins from major regulatory systems such as the Hippo kinase cascade, unlike what is found for the TEAD co-factors YAP (encoded by YAP1) and TAZ (encoded by WWTR1). Vgll3 overexpression reduced the activity of the Hippo negative-feedback loop, affecting expression of muscle-regulating genes including Myf5, Pitx2 and Pitx3, and genes encoding certain Wnts and IGFBPs. VGLL3 mainly repressed gene expression, regulating similar genes to those regulated by YAP and TAZ. siRNA-mediated Vgll3 knockdown suppressed myoblast proliferation, whereas Vgll3 overexpression strongly promoted myogenic differentiation. However, skeletal muscle was overtly normal in Vgll3-null mice, presumably due to feedback signalling and/or redundancy. This work identifies VGLL3 as a transcriptional co-factor operating with the Hippo signal transduction network to control myogenesis., Summary: VGLL3 interacts with TEAD transcription factors to direct expression of crucial muscle regulatory genes and contribute to the control of skeletal myogenesis.
